Seniors Week
discover. imagine. together. 14–20 October 2019
THE
More than 112,000 Tasmanians are enjoying the rewards of being a Seniors Card holder… so what are you waiting for?! Throughout the year, and especially during Seniors Week 2019, Seniors Card holders can enjoy a wide range of benefits with more than 650 businesses across the state offering discounts on products and services. The 2019–2020 Seniors Card Directory was released in December 2018 and is available from Service Tasmania Libraries and local government offices. You can also have a copy sent direct to you by phoning 1300 13 55 13. New businesses are always joining the Seniors Card Program so it’s worth regularly checking online for updates at www.seniors.tas.gov.au and following us on Facebook. (If you’re not too familiar with the internet, Seniors Week is a great time to visit your local Library or Online Access Centre for lessons about searching online!)

How do I get a Seniors Card? If you are a Tasmanian resident aged 60 and over and are retired or not working more than 20 hours a week in paid employment then you could be eligible for a Tasmanian Government Seniors Card. To apply for a card call into any Service Tasmania service centre with three pieces of identification – one with your date of birth and one showing proof of your Tasmanian address – and complete an application form. A Service Tasmania officer will witness your form and once approved give you a receipt that acts as a temporary Seniors Card. This enables you to start accessing discounts immediately including during Seniors Week! Service Tasmania can also help with change of addresses and applying for a replacement card. For more information please call us on
1300 13 55 13.

Event listings
This program contains a comprehensive listing of Seniors Week events throughout Tasmania. Every effort has been made to ensure correct listings, but it is recommended that details be confirmed prior to attending events.
Other events
In some parts of the State, activities have been planned in addition to those in this official program. Please check with your local council, community groups and local newspapers for information about any other events that may be held in your community.
Special access
People with disabilities or requiring special access should contact the event organiser prior to attendance.
Transport for seniors
Message from the minister Seniors Week presents us with a perfect opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the valuable role and contribution of Seniors. It also provides each of us with the chance to discover new connections and revisit those precious connections within the community that we have already established. ‘Connections’ is therefore a very fitting theme for Seniors Week 2019! During this year’s Seniors Week, I encourage everyone to consider trying a new or different activity of interest. With over 500 activities and events being offered across Tasmania during Seniors Week, there are plenty of opportunities to connect, engage and explore with others in the community around you. This might be the ideal time to connect with that community group you have been thinking about joining for some time. Community connections can be formed by joining a group with similar interests to your own, and getting together to share ideas and learn.
Public liability
Joining a sport and recreation organisation is always good for maintaining physical and mental health and overall wellbeing, and getting to know others in the community.

For many years, Seniors Week has offered technology lessons. People now regularly connect socially and conduct business online and Seniors Week provides a good opportunity to consider learning more about this exciting area.
On the North West coast, the operators of Merseylink are once again most generously providing free bus services to Seniors Card holders during Seniors Week. Event organisers should have appropriate insurance cover while participating in Seniors Week including, but not limited to, public liability insurance. While COTA Tasmania is responsible for coordinating and promoting Seniors Week, individual event organisers are responsible for all insurances for their own specific activity.
FREE EVENT = GOLD COIN DONATION = Entry or participation fees may apply to all other events. If booking details are stated, bookings are essential. Events may be cancelled if no bookings are received.

Many organisations offering Seniors Week activities are run by volunteers. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting our valuable community organisations and events. Volunteering itself can be another way to connect, whether it be by helping out at community events or teaming up with other volunteers to make a difference on matters important to you. The Tasmanian Government recognises the invaluable role of Council on the Ageing Tasmania (COTA) in supporting older Tasmanians to participate and connect in the community. Congratulations to COTA for coordinating a very comprehensive program of activities and events once again and a big thank you to all the businesses, organisations and individuals involved in ensuring Seniors Week 2019 is a success. I warmly encourage Tasmanians of all ages to take part and make connections!

SENIORS WEEK 2019
3
Welcome to the 22nd annual Seniors Week! This year’s Seniors Week overarching theme is “Connections” and COTA Tasmania has encouraged this year’s organisers to adopt the community connections theme where practical. COTA Tasmania reaches out into the community in many ways, and we will be proudly showcasing our many and various activities, plus some of our primary associates, at an Expo as part of the official Seniors Week public and media launch in Launceston on 1 October – the official International Day of Older Persons. Our project officers will be on hand to meet and advise guests about their specialist project area, so we do hope you and your friends can join us for this special free expo event in Launceston, which will include the recently launched and acclaimed Ageing My Way exhibition, which uses photos and brief text to tell the stories of some older Tasmanians as they age. We hope you enjoy this guide; we have listened to your feedback and have retained its proven, reader-friendly format and again included the popular Daily Planner, which allows you to more easily identify the events that appeal and make your Seniors Week activity planning a breeze! We immensely value our Seniors Week supporters, foremost the Tasmanian Government, which had the vision to start this wonderful activities program for seniors 22 years ago and which continues to support COTA Tasmania in presenting the annual Seniors Week program to a growing annual participation audience of about 10,000 Tasmanians!

SENIORS WEEK 2019
We also welcome back TasNetworks, The Senior Tasmania newspaper, MerseyLink Coaches and Australia Post, the latter massively enhancing our statewide program availability and distribution process. Without these valued supporters COTA Tasmania simply could not facilitate this unique annual activities program for older Tasmanians. So, you are encouraged to support these wonderful sponsors as well as the program advertisers whose participation is also appreciated and valued. I want to acknowledge our small but dedicated team at COTA for their commitment to making Seniors Week as varied, accessible and enjoyable as possible. They look forward to meeting some of you at the COTA Expo and official launch event in Launceston on 1 October – the International Day of Older Persons – or perhaps seeing you out and about at an event in Seniors Week. I also thank the hundreds of event organisers for their efforts in making this 22nd Annual Seniors Week another exciting, varied and successful week of activities for older Tasmanians. We proudly continue to use the tagline: Discover. Imagine. Together because we continue to believe that this phrase perfectly represents the spirit of Seniors Week events, whether they be creative, information-based or a physical activity. Or simply getting connected with old and new friends! Whatever you do in Seniors Week this year, we hope you do indeed, discover, imagine and enjoy – and connect – together. Cheers, Sue Leitch Chief Executive Officer, COTA
Give us your feedback— tell us your stories How has Seniors Week enriched your life? Why do you support Seniors Week? What ongoing friendships/ networks have you gained as a result of Seniors Week? Tell us – we’d love to hear your stories and suggestions! Send us a note or email. To help us ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of Seniors Week and maintain its place as a leading Tasmanian major event, we encourage feedback from organisers and patrons. So, when attending Seniors Week events, please take the opportunity to seek and complete an official survey form. We plan to have a number of our fantastic volunteers at selected events taking photos and assisting patrons to fill out the survey, which takes less than two minutes to complete. Event organisers will distribute and collect, and return to COTA. Alternatively, you can access the survey form from the COTA Tasmania website: www.cotatasmania.org.au COTA Tasmania “Westella” 181 Elizabeth Street, Hobart TAS 7000 admin@cotatas.org.au (03) 6231 3265
THE
11:00am Tuesday 1 October Tramsheds Reception Centre 4 Invermay Road, Inveresk Connect with COTA: get advice, find information and join us for a cuppa! The Seniors Week theme this year is Connections – and connecting is something COTA Tasmania does very well via our many and various projects and activities around the state. So with that in mind, COTA is inviting community members in the north of the state (in particular!) to join us at the official media and public launch of 2019 Seniors Week at the Tramsheds reception centre in Launceston on Tuesday 1 October at 11:00am. This is a wonderful opportunity for older Tasmanians in the state’s north to come along and see what COTA does, meet our team and get some great advice. And have a cuppa with us!
This year the official launch event doubles as an official COTA expo. This special event is again made possible by the support of our longtime major sponsor, The Senior newspaper, whose October edition will available at the event. COTA’s experienced and highly regarded project officers will be at the expo with an array of important printed information and a keenness to speak with guests about the benefits of our statewide programs. Guests will learn about COTA’s six Peer Education programs, Elder Abuse Prevention program including the annual Walks Against Elder Abuse, or the extensive Active Ageing program, which includes the
Liveable Communities Toolkit and the new Community Activities webpage. COTA Tasmania’s experienced Aged Care Know-how team will be there to offer advice. We also plan to have representatives from government services that work with COTA in the delivery of some our programs. The launch/expo will give northern Tasmanians an opportunity to check out COTA’s Ageing My Way photographic exhibition, featuring brief stories and photographs about the ageing experience of older Tasmanians. The expo will start immediately after the 11:00am official launch ceremony with morning tea provided. Admission is free. RSVPs are preferred for catering purposes: admin@cotatas.org.au or 6231 3265.
Don’t be left in the dark about power outage safety and preparation
We’re committed to providing reliable power to our customers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but unplanned power outages can happen and we want everyone to be prepared. When an unplanned outage happens, be it from storms to fallen trees, we work to restore power as safely and as quickly as possible. Here’s what to include in a home emergency kit to assist you during power outages. Keep the kit in an accessible location. Items may include: • A battery-operated radio • A battery-operated torch (don’t use candles they can increase the risk of fire) • Fully charged mobile phone with important contact numbers stored • Battery back-up or additional power pack for electronic devices • Special items for vulnerable people, such as babies or the disabled • Non-perishable food, water, utensils and a can opener • If you use gas bottles, keep a spare one • If you use electricity for heating, include extra blankets and clothing • A first aid kit and any medications essential to you and your family’s health
Stay safe • Don’t use a landline phone during a storm, use a mobile phone • any non-essential appliances. Don’t touch your switchboard, metallic earthed whitegoods or metallic plumbing parts. Advise TasNetworks as soon as it is safe • with special needs, such as elderly people and people with disabilities • If your power does goes out, be safe - always stay well clear of fallen powerlines and report fallen powerlines to TasNetworks.

Conduct a home electrical safety check How often do you consider your home’s electrical safety? We all know check-ups are a good idea as we get older, but what about for your home? At TasNetworks, we think it’s never too late to conduct a home electrical safety check. Small signs can mean big dangers with the electrical wiring in your home. Here’s what to look out for: • Tingles from taps or metal fittings • Flickering lights or lights varying in brightness • Appliances or power tools giving electric shocks • Excessive noise or sparking from switches or power points • Slow-working electrical appliances • Disturbed earth wire or a broken or damaged bare copper wire or green insulated wire
If you see or feel any of these warning signs, call TasNetworks on 132 004. If you haven’t already, order a free CablePI device from TasNetworks. A CablePI can protect you and your home by detecting a potentially life-threatening electrical fault called a broken neutral. Call TasNetworks on 132 004 or visit the TasNetworks website at www. tasnetworks.com.au/CablePI to order a CablePI today. TasNetworks is here to answer enquiries you have about your power supply. Call TasNetworks on 1300 137 008 (Monday–Friday, 9am to 5pm) or visit www.tasnetworks. com.au to find more information about TasNetworks or to contact TasNetworks online.

Narryna’s Convict Women
Narryna Narryna is an 1830s merchant’s house and collection that tells the story of early colonial life in Hobart. The fine Georgian town house was built by seafarer Captain Andrew Haig who built warehouses facing Salamanca Place in 1834. This special tour of Narryna focuses on the convict women assigned to the Haig family to cook, clean, launder clothes and carry out domestic tasks. These convict women were no shrinking violets – but were rebellious, resourceful and resilient! The tour includes light morning tea. Please note: The ground floor of Narryna has complete wheelchair and mobility access. Due to the age of the building there is limited mobility with access to the first floor via stairs. No lift is available on-site. Tuesday 15th October 10:30am–11:30am Wednesday 16th October 10:30am–11:30am Saturday 19th October 10:30am–11:30am Narryna, 103 Hampden Road, Battery Point Cost: Adults $12, Seniors/Conc $10, Children $4 Bookings: 6234 2791 | www.narryna.com.au/tours | narryna@tmag.tas.gov.au (close 12/10)

Does not wisdom call? The relationship between wisdom and later life
Glenda Daly What is wisdom and can it make a difference in our changing cultures of the 21st Century? Sociobiologist Edward O. Wilson has said “We are drowning in information, while starving for wisdom. The world henceforth will be run by synthesizers, people able to put together the right information at the right time, think critically about it, and make important choices wisely." From ancient and modern texts, personal experience and academic research, an appeal will be made for the importance of wisdom. Come along and learn about this sometimes overlooked yet intriguing topic. Followed by questions and discussion. Selah Café will be open on the day. Older Tasmanians are encouraged to join the new Strength for Life program recently launched in Tasmania. COTA Tasmania is managing the program, which aims to improve health outcomes, fitness and quality of life for older people through strength and balance training. The Strength for Life program is designed to provide affordable access to strength training. Fees are capped to keep costs low and participants may also be able to access rebates through their health fund or Medicare.
The program has two tiers: 1. Baseline and followup testing conducted by accredited exercise physiologists and physiotherapists; and 2. Progressive strength training sessions delivered in a group setting by accredited fitness professionals. Although classes are delivered in groups, individualised strength training plans are developed for each participant.
The program has been running successfully for many years in other states and territories under the Strength for Life and Living Longer Living Stronger banners. Funding from the Australian Government's Move It AUS – Better Ageing Grant Program has enabled the program to expand under a unified national brand. To learn more about the Strength for Life program, contact Strength for Life Coordinator Luke Summers by email at lukes@cotatas. org.au or call 0477 038 230 or go to the website: www.cotatas.org.au/sfl

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN DOING? COTA continues to implement its comprehensive 20172022 Strategic Plan. The free monthly Elder Law Clinics facilitated by COTA in conjunction with the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania continues to be very popular.
Who ARE WE? COTA Tasmania is the lead organisation in Tasmania for older people; for the issues that they may be facing, and for celebrating their successes. We are passionate about the rights of older people and speak regularly with all levels of government, a broad sector of the business and community sectors, and of course, older people. We’re an independent not-for-profit incorporated body with a volunteer board of directors who meet regularly. The Board has several subcommittees providing specialist advice. We also have a Policy Council looking at social policy that affects older people. COTA has a small staff; a full-time Chief Executive and several part-time project officers who have responsibility for delivering a range of activities and benefits to older people, ranging from information about age care reforms, elder abuse, active ageing, and information sessions for older people. We also provide policy feedback on a variety of subjects such as health reform, transport, retirement incomes and workforce issues for older workers.

With an awareness that many in the community are unsure of what constitutes abuse against older people, COTA facilitated its 5th annual Walk Against Elder Abuse on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in June. Walks were held in Hobart and for the second time in Launceston. Hundreds of community members including high school students in uniform joined the marches, carrying special placards with powerful anti-elder abuse messages. COTA Tasmania launched a new website with more information and easier navigation. A significant new feature is a new Community Activity page featuring more than 700 events being held around Tasmania of particular appeal to older Tasmanians. Event organisers are able to access this section and add their own events. COTA Tasmania employed three experienced part-time project officers in the south and north of the state to provide advice to Tasmanians about aged care options as part of the national Aged Care System Navigator Trial.
