Seniors Week 12–18 OCTOBER 2020

A social butterfly at At age 93, Nance loves her Chai Lattes, but it’s rare to see her sitting down to enjoy one; not because she can’t, but because there’s just too much to do! Her son often tells her it’s time to rest, but she says, “I’d rather be on the move and if I can do something useful, that’s even better!”

Born in the Tasmanian midlands, Nance and her family moved to Hobart when she was twelve, and she began work in a fruit shop. She married the love of her life, Jack, after the war and together they raised four children. Jack passed away 32 years ago and, since then, Nance has lived independently, caring for her middle son who has special needs. Four years ago, Nance was assessed by My Aged Care for a Level 2 Home Care Package. Nance chose Community Based Support (CBS) to manage her Home Care Package, and since then, she hasn’t looked back. Together, Nance and CBS identified the best support options for her. Nance welcomed the idea of attending a CBS Social Hub saying, “I’ve never really had the opportunity to go out, you see, I’ve never really had the opportunity for a social life. I’d always either been working or looking after someone at home”. Nance says, “The social hub really changed my life. By gosh it’s given me a lot of confidence! Going out really got me out of my shell. I can now stand up and speak to people, I can laugh and dance with them, and share my thoughts and ideas, whereas before I just went to the corner”.

I choose Community Based Support because…

“they help me live at home, and I’ve never been more social!” Nance, 93 AN I N A T ASM N E D O W 1 9 88 E -S I N C

Wife. Mum. Carer.

CBS runs 8 Social Hubs across Tasmania. Two days a week, Nance hops on a bus that takes her to the New Town Hub. “I love the ride”, Nance laughs, “I could sit on the bus all day!” At the Hub there is so much to do. Nance says, “it gives me some time to myself, away from my duties at home”.

changed my life.

Nance explains that she doesn’t like sitting still and is always looking for ways to be of assistance. Over her years with CBS, she has set up a number of initiatives to help others including a fundraising trade table; a Neo-natal knitting group; and cooking sessions to help others learn how. She is now thinking about her next project! Nance suffers from a bad knee, inflammation of the spine and has recently lost vision in one eye. But nothing will slow her down. Fiercely independent, she receives the support she needs from CBS, which includes house cleaning and help with shopping, as well as regularly attending the Social Hub. She is grateful to CBS who she has found to be “very good”. The Social Hub has been a wonderful and life-giving experience for Nance and she is so grateful it’s there for her.

We helped Nance. Now let us help you. We offer these Aged Care services to benefit you: • Assistance to register for government-funded Aged Care services • Home Care Packages • Interim services (while you wait for your Home Care Package) • Domestic cleaning services • Social interaction and well-being services • 24 hour support • Multiple other personalised support services Contact our team on 1300 227 827, email bd@cbsaust.org.au or visit our website cbsaust.org.au for more information.

Welcome to the 22nd annual Seniors Week 2020, held from 12–18 October, and the 10th to be facilitated by COTA Tasmania – a great opportunity to engage in activities and hobbies and stay connected with your friends and communities, which is now more important than ever before. This year’s over-arching theme is “Who we are. What we do.”, and even with the relevant COVID-19 safety plans in place, it is great to see COTA Tasmanian has helped to ensure there is a good variety of events spread across the state. While Seniors Week will be quite different this year, our number one priority through the coronavirus pandemic is the health, wellbeing and safety of Tasmanians, and this year’s program offers plenty of opportunities to help keep communities connected and engaged through this time of uncertainty. Indeed for the first time in Seniors Week history online events will be offered, which means a more inclusive program for many older Tasmanians who could not previously participate due to social or health constraints.

As part of the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to supporting Tasmanians as they age, fostering community spirit and building a more inclusive state, Tasmanian Senior Card holders will be able to ride on any Metro bus service for free during Seniors Week 2020. I congratulate COTA Tasmania for offering a range of Seniors Week events in such unprecedented times, helping to ensure older Tasmanians can get out and about and be socially connected, and I thank them for working with the Tasmanian Government with our response to the pandemic, helping to keep people connected and bringing people back together safely. I also congratulate those organisations and individuals who are participating in Seniors Week 2020, for seizing the chance to give stimulation and socialisation opportunities for older Tasmanians, many of whom have been presented with more challenges than most away from family, friends and their communities.

Seniors Week 2020

Welcome to the 22nd annual Seniors Week! COTA Tasmania is genuinely delighted to present the 22nd annual Seniors Week – the 10th to be organised by COTA on behalf of the State Government. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic the decision to proceed with Seniors Week this year was not taken until June. Despite this shortened planning time and uncertainty due to the pandemic, let alone groups ’ability to participate in Seniors Week, the community responded magnificently. More than 300 events are on offer around the state. We are so impressed and very grateful for the resilience and positivity of this year’s event organisers. For the first time in Seniors Week, online events are available. Around 50 events will be simulcast and several are online-only. This major initiative will allow many older Tasmanians who are unable to physically participate, to be part of the Seniors Week program – if only “virtually”. This year’s over-arching theme is broadly “anti-ageism” so we’ve devised the tagline “Who we are. What we do.” to represent this theme. We love the overall illustrations provided by a talented local artist and we are again very proud of our acclaimed official Events Guide. We hope you enjoy this guide; we have listened to your feedback and have retained its proven, readerfriendly format and again included the popular Daily Planner, which allows you to easily identify the events that appeal to you and make your Seniors Week activity planning a breeze. There’s even a special section for online events.

Seniors Week 2020

We immensely value our Seniors Week supporters, foremost the Tasmanian Government, which had the vision to start this wonderful activities program for seniors 22 years ago and which continues to support COTA Tasmania in presenting the annual Seniors Week program. We also welcome back TasNetworks, The Senior newspaper, Metro Tasmania, and Australia Post – the latter massively enhancing our statewide program availability and distribution process. We also thank NBN Co for their assistance to organisers with online preparations. Without these valued supporters COTA Tasmania simply could not facilitate this unique annual activities program for older Tasmanians. So, you are encouraged to support these wonderful sponsors as well as the program advertisers whose participation is also appreciated and valued. I want to acknowledge our small but dedicated team at COTA for their commitment to making Seniors Week as varied, accessible and enjoyable as possible, especially in this challenging year. Some staff will be out and about during Seniors Week – being physically distant! – and they look forward to meeting some of you. I thank the hundreds of event organisers for their special efforts in testing times to make this 22nd Annual Seniors Week another varied and successful week of activities for older Tasmanians. Whatever you do in Seniors Week this year, remember to wash your hands, physically-distance – and enjoy the activities and connections. Cheers,

Sue Leitch CHIEF EXECUTIVE COUNCIL ON THE AGEING TASMANIA

Event organisers will distribute and collect the survey form, and return them to COTA. Alternatively, you can access the form from the COTA Tasmania website: www.cotatas.org.au To help us ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of Seniors Week and maintain its place as a leading Tasmanian major event, we encourage and rely on feedback from organisers and patrons. Join us online for our Seniors Week launch! You’re invited to join us for the official launch of Seniors Week on 1 October – the annual International Day of Older Persons.

10:30am Thursday 1 October on Zoom

This year for the first time in the 22year history of Seniors Week we’re not having a face-to-face event. Like over 30 Seniors Week event organisers this year, we are also going online for a virtual get-together. This way we know we can deliver a COVID-safe launch for you. Our Zoom webinar is free and open to anyone to join as a viewer – but you must register (rsvp). Simply visit the COTA Tasmania website www.cotatas.org.au and follow the prompts on the home page to the launch registration link. That will give you instructions about joining the webinar on Thursday 1 October at 10:30am for the approximately one-hour event. If you are not sure how to do this – call the COTA office and we can assist.

The Zoom platform is free, easy to set up and is obligation-free. In keeping with COTA Tasmania’s 2020 theme to tackle ageism in our society using the tagline: "Who we are. What we do."; the launch webinar will feature interviews with older Tasmanians living in and contributing to their communities in our beautiful state. It’s also planned to have some special musical entertainment to round out this landmark online launch celebration, that you can enjoy from wherever suits you! We just unfortunately can’t offer you a cuppa and biscuit this year . . . but feel free to grab one from your own kitchen. For enquiries or assistance call (03) 6231 3265 or email admin@cotatas.org.au

Don’t switch off around electricity We all know that regular checkups are important, especially as we get older, but how often do you consider the health of your home’s electrical wiring? Although electricity can’t be seen, small signs like tingly taps or flickering lights could be an indication that it isn’t flowing as it should be, which could be dangerous.

If you see or feel any of these warning signs you should never ignore them, instead report them to TasNetworks on 132 004.

Metro — keeping Tasmanians moving safely

Metro is a long-time supporter of Seniors Week, and is again offering free travel for Seniors Cards holders with a Greencard during Seniors Week (12 to 18 October 2020).

Metro is proud of the role it has played in keeping Tasmanians moving, connecting them with essential services and their jobs, during the COVID-19 shutdown.

Using a Greencard is a quick and simple process – no need for correct change, just tap and go. You can even set up an automatic top up for when you are running low, or add credit online, at a Metro shop, depot or Greencard agent.

At all times the safe transport of passengers – and the safety of our employees – was top of mind. This continues to be important and Metro’s focus.

Safety during Seniors Week

However, patrons are urged to take responsibility for their own COVID-safe precautions by:

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a number of travel and gathering restrictions, which have required Seniors Week event organisers to take actions to make their event environments as COVID-safe as possible for guests.

• Maintaining 1.5 metres distance to other people, even outdoors; • Using hand sanitiser or washing hands thoroughly with soap and water; • Covering coughs and sneezes; • Staying away if you are even slightly unwell; and • Wearing a face mask if desired.

Organisers of both indoor and outdoor events will observe social distancing protocols and provide signage and general assistance in regard to COVID-safe procedures.

The latest government information and advice about COVID-19 can be accessed online at www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au or via the COTA Tasmania website www.cotatas.org.au

Although Seniors Week is on track to proceed in October with face-to-face events, it’s of course not “business as usual” this year.

Advance Care Planning Basics: New Tasmanian Advance Care Directive

Palliative Care Tasmania Many people in the community fear the end stage of life, not because we’re necessarily afraid of dying but because we fear such things as loss of mental faculties, control and dignity, being a burden on family and not receiving adequate pain relief. As competent adults we do have a say in how and where we are to die, and whether to accept or refuse life prolonging treatment. Advance Care Planning and writing up an Advance Care Directive provides a way for competent people to document legally what type of medical attention they would or wouldn’t want if they no longer had capacity to make their own decisions. This presentation will discuss the key points in Advance Care Planning; things like what it means to have “capacity”, what information to include, the Tasmanian Advance Care Directive, substitute decision makers, enduring guardians and resources to assist you. Monday 12th October 1:00pm–2:00pm Online only: Zoom – https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83 914514307?pwd=QUwyNFpIam8zdUhoSmYyUmp MTngrdz09 Bookings: admin@pct.org.au | www.pallcaretas.org.au/events (close: 9/10/20) Enquiries: 03 6231 2799

COTA Tasmania and Worksafe Tasmania If you are a worker entering a new life stage and thinking about adjusting your working arrangements, this could be the event for you. We'll discuss workplace ageism and encourage employers to become leaders in promoting life-stage wellbeing. Nearly half of Tasmania's workforce is aged over 45 and the mental health and wellbeing of older workers can be severely compromised by ageism. Older employees who wish to adjust working arrangements, as their preferences or responsibilities change, may be anxious about raising the subject for fear of being stigmatised, targeted for redundancy or pressured to retire early. Drawing on a case study, we'll consider innovative paths to better outcomes for employees and employers. Bicycle Network Tasmania To celebrate Seniors Week in the south, we’re e-biking to Moonah for coffee - another good excuse to get together and enjoy a ride! (If MONA re-opens we may well go there instead). Enjoy a relaxed ride with fellow riders of e-bikes, trying a different route through the northern suburbs on quiet roads and offroad bikepaths. You’ll be able to check out a new route, develop your e-bike knowledge and gain confidence in managing your e-steed on Hobart’s bikepaths and roads. The route tours through Lutana, Goodwood and GASP in Montrose on suburban roads (the e-bikes will be handy on the gentle hill here). Back through the suburbs of Glenorchy to join the smooth and safe InterCity Cycleway. At Moonah we’ll stop for coffee and snacks, then back to Hobart along the cycleway. If you don’t have an e-bike try hiring one - a good way to see if e-bikes suit you. Hidden Treasures – Digging Up Your Past

QUEENSTOWN

Rack and Gorge Tour

West Coast Wilderness Railway Join our four-hour Rack and Gorge tour and take a heritage steam train journey through remote rainforest to the incredible King River Gorge. During Seniors Week we are also including a complimentary souvenir gift book for seniors as well as providing our standard seniors discount of 10%. As you travel through the west coast’s cool temperate rainforest, you will climb one of the Southern Hemisphere’s steepest tracks under the unique power of the Abt Rack and Pinion system. This system was designed in the nineteenth century and transformed the fortunes of the west coast. Stop at historic stations, traverse the deep chasm of the King River Gorge, and see the places where early west coast pioneers lived and worked to create this extraordinary railway. During your experience, your guide will share stories of the determined and visionary people who carved out their fortunes in one of the most difficult and remote landscapes imaginable. Hear tales of the rogues and rivalry that led to the creation of the richest copper mining company in the world and marvel at how nature has prevailed through it all. Best of all, everything we do for you is: free, confidential, independent and professional!

The COVID 19 Pandemic has changed the way we communicate. Virtual meetings and get togethers have replaced tea, biccies and face to face. This is tough for Tasmanians that are not confident with the new tools of the age, namely the mobile phone, the tablet and the laptop.

Freecall on 1800 005 131 or visit www.yoursaytas.org to find out more.

We here at COTA recognised 2 years ago that the best way to help people learn to use their device effectively was to sit with them privately in a one-to-one situation and answer their questions about how to do things. COTA is committed to helping Tasmanians over 50 to learn how to communicate in these times. We are doing this in several ways: 1. We conduct one-on-one appointments at our office in Westella, 181 Elizabeth Street, Hobart. 2. We travel the state and hold “Pop-Up” stalls in any location that can book over six people on the day. 3. We are developing simple, easy to read instructions for people to follow, on products such as Zoom, Facebook Messenger and Facetime. The future promises even more initiatives that will be of benefit. We are planning visits to the West Coast and the East Coast to upskill their local IT Peer Educators and will develop another suite of instructions on how to use your device. Our Zoom instructions are completed and have been distributed. They are also available on our website at www.cotatas. org.au/information/getting-help/itinstructions/ COTA is working hard to assist older people so that they can talk, message, and video call to people they care about.

What we have been doing Who we are COTA Tasmania is the lead organisation in Tasmania for older people, the issues that they may be facing, and celebrating their successes. We are passionate about the rights of older people and speak regularly with all levels of government, a broad sector of the business and community sectors, and of course, older people. We’re an independent not-for-profit incorporated body with a volunteer board of directors who meet regularly. The Board has several sub-committees providing specialist advice. We also have a Policy Council looking at social policy that affects older people. COTA has a small staff: a full-time Chief Executive Officer, and several part-time project officers who have responsibility for delivering a range of activities and benefits to older people, ranging from information about age care reforms, elder abuse, active ageing, and information sessions for older people. We also provide policy feedback on a variety of subjects such as health reform, transport, retirement incomes and workforce issues for older workers.

COTA continues to implement its comprehensive 2017–2022 Strategic Plan. The free monthly Elder Law clinics facilitated by COTA in conjunction with the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania were continued, reverting to online-only delivery during the pandemic. COTA recently updated its Liveable Communities Toolkit – a resource that assists local government to develop age-friendly communities. The Toolkit has information about creating supportive, inclusive, safe and engaging communities for people of all ages, backgrounds and mobility. COTA’s renowned Peer Education Program now features six information sessions delivered by COTA’s statewide team of experienced and knowledgeable volunteer educators. The modules include Protecting Your Finances from Abuse as part of the award-winning You’re Worth It series; Getting Connected; Eat For Life; Aged Care Know-how; Home Fire Safety; Protecting Your Finances from Abuse. The very popular Community Activities web page embedded in COTA Tasmania’s revamped website recently celebrated its first anniversary. Almost 1,000 Tasmanians events suitable for older Tasmanians are featured. Event organisers are able to directly access the site to add or edit their own events. The federally-funded Aged Care System Navigator trial has been extended and a fourth part-time specialist project officer employed in the north-west to provide a statewide

advisory service to Tasmanians about aged care options. Online consultations have also been available during the pandemic. With the pandemic preventing the traditional Walks Against Elder Abuse facilitated by COTA on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in June, this year’s walks were replaced by a well-attended online webinar event – Talks Against Elder Abuse – opened by Tasmania’s Governor the Hon Professor Kate Warner AC, and featuring case studies and contributions from presenters around the state. COTA facilitated another very successful Piecing It Together intergenerational street art project, this time at the Eastlands Shopping Centre on Hobart’s Eastern Shore. The project brought younger and older people together to learn about, design, and create street art, and challenge stereotypes about being younger and becoming older. Through Tassie’s Kindness Connection, COTA Tasmania, supported by the Tasmanian Government, has created a hub for listing, promoting, and recording acts and messages of kindness from around the State. This initiative, which evolved during the coronavirus restrictions, is a network of people performing COVID-safe acts of kindness.

More than 116,000 Tasmanians are enjoying the rewards of being a Seniors Card holder… so what are you waiting for?! The 2021–2022 Seniors Card Directory will be released in December 2020 and is available from Service Tasmania, Libraries and local government offices. You can also have a copy sent direct to you by phoning 1300 13 55 13. New businesses are always joining the Seniors Card Program so it’s worth regularly checking online for updates at www.seniors.tas.gov.au and following us on Facebook. (If you’re not too familiar with the internet, Seniors Week is a great time to visit your local Library or Online Access Centre for lessons about searching online!)

How do I get a Seniors Card? If you are a Tasmanian resident aged 60 and over and are retired or not working more than 20 hours a week in paid employment (averaged over a twelve month period) then you could be eligible for a Tasmanian Government Seniors Card. To apply for a card call into any Service Tasmania service centre with three pieces of identification – one with your date of birth and one showing proof of your Tasmanian address – and complete an application form. A Service Tasmania officer will witness your form and once approved give you a receipt that acts as a temporary Seniors Card. This enables you to start accessing discounts immediately including during Seniors Week! Service Tasmania can also help with change of addresses and applying for a replacement card.
