Seniors Week

Directory 2021-2022

More than 118 000 Tasmanians are enjoying the rewards of being a Seniors Card holder... so what are you waiting for? Throughout the year, and especially during Seniors Week 2021, Seniors Card holders can enjoy a wide range of benefits with more than 550 businesses across the state offering discounts on products and services. The 2021–2022 Seniors Card Directory was released in December 2020 and is available from Service Tasmania Libraries and local government offices. You can also have a copy sent to you by phoning 1300 13 55 13. New businesses are always joining the Seniors Card Program so it’s worth regularly checking online for updates at www.seniors.tas.gov.au and following us on Facebook. (If you’re not too familiar with the internet, Seniors Week is a great time to visit your local Library or Online Access Centre for assistance with searching online!)

How do I get a Seniors Card? If you are a Tasmanian resident aged 60 and over and are retired or not working more than 20 hours per week in paid employment then you could be eligible for a Tasmanian Government Seniors Card. To apply for a card call into any Service Tasmania service centre with three pieces of identification – one with your date of birth and one showing proof of your Tasmanian address – and complete an application form. A Service Tasmania officer will witness your form and once approved give you a receipt that acts as a temporary Seniors Card. This enables you to start accessing discounts immediately including during Seniors Week. Service Tasmania can also help with change of addresses and applying for a replacement card. For more information please call us on 1300 13 55 13. Email: seniors@communities.tas.gov.au

Message from the Deputy Premier Welcome to the 23rd annual Seniors Week and thank you to COTA Tasmania for organising another activity-packed program of events to celebrate older Tasmanians. The importance of looking after our wellbeing through connection to each other and our communities cannot be over-stated, and Seniors Week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate what we have here in Tasmania. This year’s theme is “friendship” with the tagline of “discover. imagine. together”, and I encourage everyone to check out the array of activities published in this comprehensive guide, to discover something new by participating in Seniors Week 2021. As we’ve seen recently, the COVID-19 pandemic remains an ever-present challenge, and while you are checking out the activities don’t forget to Check In to each and every event you attend. To help everyone get on board, as part of the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to supporting Tasmanians as they age, fostering community spirit and building a more inclusive state, Tasmanian Seniors Card holders with a Metro Greencard will again be able to ride on any Metro bus service for free during Seniors Week.

The Tasmanian Government thanks COTA Tasmania for working with us for Seniors Week and with our response to the pandemic, helping to keep people connected and bringing people back together safely. Our number one priority continues to be the health, wellbeing and safety of Tasmanians, and we thank all organisations and individuals for embracing Seniors Week 2021, for providing the opportunity for older Tasmanians to connect with each other and their communities. We also congratulate COTA Tasmania for their ongoing commitment to Seniors Week in the age of uncertainty, for helping to ensure older Tasmanians can get out and about and be socially connected. Please enjoy Seniors Week 2021.

Seniors Week 2021

Welcome to the 23rd annual Seniors Week! It’s again been a challenging year but COTA Tasmania is delighted to be able to present another Seniors Week program for older Tasmanians. This is the 23rd annual Seniors Week and the 11th to be organised by COTA on behalf of the State Government. Almost 350 events are on offer around the state. We are so impressed and very grateful for the resilience and positivity of this year’s event organisers, many of whom were unable to participate last year because of the pandemic. This year’s theme is “friendship” and this theme is reflected in the overall graphic design created by a talented local young illustrator. We are continuing with the tagline Discover. Imagine. Together that we introduced several years ago, and which still resonates perfectly with the Seniors Week objectives. We hope you enjoy this Events Guide and its proven, reader-friendly format. It again features the popular Daily Planner, which allows you to more easily identify the events that appeal and make your Seniors Week activity-planning a breeze. We immensely value our Seniors Week supporters, foremost the Tasmanian Government, which had the vision to start this wonderful activities program for seniors 23 years ago, and continues to support COTA Tasmania in presenting this popular program.

We again acknowledge our valued sponsors including TasNetworks, Metro Tasmania, and Australia Post, the latter massively enhancing our statewide Events Guide availability. Without these valued supporters COTA Tasmania simply could not facilitate this popular annual program. So, you are encouraged to support these wonderful sponsors as well as this Guide’s advertisers, whose participation is also appreciated. I want to acknowledge our small but dedicated team at COTA for their commitment to making Seniors Week as varied, accessible and enjoyable as possible, especially in another challenging year. Some staff will be out an about during Seniors Week - being socially distant! – and they look forward to meeting some of you. I thank the hundreds of event organisers for their special efforts in continued testing times to make this 23rd Annual Seniors Week another week of varied and interesting activities for older Tasmanians. Whatever you do in Seniors Week this year, remember to wash your hands, check-in, socially-distance – and above all, enjoy the activities and friendships, old and new. Cheers,

Sue Leitch Chief Executive, Council on the Ageing Tasmania

It’s more important than ever to stay safe and healthy as we physically distance and reduce our risk of getting COVID-19. When we are healthy, we can fight COVID-19 and other infections better and get well again sooner.

As we went to print, negotiations were still happening with guest panellists (including a few “celebrities”), but we promise the debating lineup will be entertaining.

Join the discussion. If you thought last year’s first-ever online launch of Seniors Week was different (it sure was!) stand by for this year’s launch event on Thursday 30 September.

The launch event is not just about the entertainment – of course! There will be some semi-serious business, including a brief address from COTA Tasmania CEO Sue Leitch, and a senior government representative will officially launch Seniors Week 2021. The FREE event starts at 2pm and will finish by 4pm after a delicious afternoon tea.

The Seniors Week theme this year is “friendship” so to celebrate this topic we are featuring a special live panel debate, onstage at Hobart’s iconic Playhouse Theatre.

Seating is limited due to COVID space restrictions so bookings are essential.

Guest panellists will debate the topic: “Old friendships are better than new ones”. One side will present a case for the “old” and the others will prosecute the “new” argument.

To book, use playhouse.org.au/ shows/cota (preferred) or call COTA on (03) 6231 3265. For catering purposes, bookings close Tuesday 28 September.

Expect ing a new addit ion? A pertussis containing vaccine booster is recommended for people in close contact with infants, including grandparents.

Seniors Week 2021 — powered by TasNetworks

Australia Post is supporting mental health and wellbeing

Metro — keeping Tasmanians moving safely

TasNetworks is proud to be partnering with COTA Tasmania once again for Seniors Week 2021.

As an organisation that connects every Australian, we’re proud to partner with Beyond Blue.

In a time where physical distancing and isolating have become the new normal, strong relationships and connections have never been more important.

The Post Office is the centre point of over 4,000 communities Australiawide. Our posties often go above and beyond to watch out for the people they deliver to, and as a postal service, we facilitate millions of connections between Australians each year.

Metro is proud of the ongoing role it has played in keeping Tasmanians moving, connecting them with essential services and their jobs.

TasNetworks plays an important role in keeping our community connected. The electricity we provide is the spark that connects us all. It keeps us connected to our friends and loved ones, powers healthcare and vital community services and helps us to enjoy our lives in many ways. The energy world is changing quickly as more people move to cleaner forms of energy. New technologies like electric vehicles and solar and battery storage systems are becoming more common, and as the needs of our customers change, our industry needs to adapt to meet these changes. While there is rapid change in the industry that will have a significant impact on TasNetworks and the way we do business, one thing that will always remain constant is our commitment to delivering safe, cost-effective and reliable electricity to our customers. — CEO, Seán Mc Goldrick

Our vast network enables us to help Beyond Blue deliver information to support mental health and wellbeing across Australia, so that we can better reach those in need and share stories of hope, recovery and resilience. We’re working to make mental health and wellbeing a part of everyday conversations, and helping to build stronger and more connected communities. Together with Beyond Blue, we aim to lead a positive change in the way Australians talk about mental health because when we connect, we feel better. COVID-19 safety in Seniors Week Although Seniors Week is at this stage still on track to proceed in October with face-to-face events, it’s unfortunately still not “business as usual” this year.

Patrons are urged to take responsibility for their own COVID-safe precautions by:

The COVID-19 pandemic has necessarily resulted in Seniors Week event organisers continuing to take actions to make their event environments as COVID-safe as possible for guests.

• Maintaining 1.5 metres distance to other people, even outdoors • Using hand sanitiser or washing hands thoroughly with soap and water • Covering coughs and sneezes • Staying away if you are even slightly unwell • Wearing a face mask if desired

Organisers of both indoor and outdoor events will observe social distancing protocols and provide signage and general assistance in regard to COVIDsafe procedures. This year all venues/events must provide a unique QR code – and all patrons must mandatorily check-in, either scanning the QR code on their smart device or manually, using facilities provided by the organiser. Whatever check-in method use – you must be registered.

The latest government information and advice about COVID-19 can be accessed online at coronavirus.tas. gov.au or via the COTA Tasmania website: www.cotatas.org.au.

What we have been doing COTA continues to implement its comprehensive 2020-2025 Strategic Plan. The free monthly Elder Law clinics facilitated by COTA in conjunction with the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania continued, reverting to face to face as well as telephone consultations. Sessions commenced in Launceston in April. COTA’s renowned Peer Education Program features several information sessions delivered by COTA’s statewide team of experienced and knowledgeable volunteer educators. The modules include Protecting Finances from Abuse as part of the award-winning You’re Worth It series; Getting Connected; Eat For Life; Home Fire Safety; Protecting Your Finances.

The very popular Community Activities web page embedded in COTA Tasmania’s revamped website recently celebrated its second anniversary. More than 1000 Tasmanians activities and events for older Tasmanians are featured. The Australian Government funded Aged Care System Navigator Trial was extended through to December 2022 Four part-time specialist project officers are employed by COTA Tasmania in the south, north and north-west to provide a statewide advisory service to Tasmanians about aged care options. The traditional Walks Against Elder Abuse facilitated by COTA on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in June returned this year with well-attended walks in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie.

COTA facilitated another very successful Piecing It Together intergenerational street art project, this time in the Glenorchy CBD shopping precinct. The project brought younger and older people together to learn about, design, and create street art, and challenge stereotypes about being younger and becoming older. COTA staff and an experienced volunteer team travelled to much of the state conducting one-on-one IT education sessions and recruiting new IT mentors so that locals in regional areas could access ongoing support. The Living Longer, Living Stronger strength and balance program (formerly Strength for Life) was launched by COTA initially in Hobart and Launceston, with plans for statewide expansion as more fitness providers join the program.

Rebellious, Resourceful and Resilient! Narryna's Convict Women

Narryna It's easy to imagine, from visiting Narryna today, that the colonists who lived there led a very comfortable 'upstairs' existence, while the convict servants were constantly at work, cooking, cleaning and caring for children. But convicts were often quite unsuited to meet the requirements of domestic service, so 'mistresses' including Elizabeth Haig and Sarah Walker, also experienced many challenges in managing the household. On this tour, the focus is on the convict women – especially those assigned to the Haig family. These women were no shrinking violets – but were rebellious, resourceful and resilient! Join the Tuesday tour (12 October) to enjoy a lovely morning tea following the tour. Tuesday 12th October 10:30am–12:00pm Narryna, 103 Hampden Road, Battery Point Cost: Adults $20, Seniors $18, Children $8 Friday 15th October 10:30am–11:30am Narryna, 103 Hampden Road, Battery Point Cost: Adults $15, Seniors $12, Children $6 Saturday 16th October 10:30am–11:30am Narryna, 103 Hampden Road, Battery Point Cost: Adults $15, Seniors $12, Children $6 Bookings: (03) 6234 2791 | narryna@tmag.tas.gov.au www.narryna.com.au/shop (close: 11/10)

Rainbow Pride Morning Tea

Working It Out A Rainbow Pride Morning Tea is a social event to celebrate the lives of LGBTIQ+ older people. Come hear a bit about LGBTIQ+ Australian history and indulge in some delicious cupcakes, tea and coffee. It's a chance to meet new people, make friends and have a good yarn. We especially welcome older members of our rainbow community, but all people – friends, family and supporters – are also welcome. If you host a social group for older people, you are warmly encouraged to see if members of that group would like to attend the morning tea in your area. Working It Out, Tasmania's gender, sexuality and intersex status support and education service, will be hosting these morning teas as part of our LGBTIQ+ ageing and aged care programs, so they are also an opportunity to ask any questions you have about aged care in Tasmania.
