Welcome to the first edition of the Power of Five for 2014.

In this issue we reflect on the good work across the nation in 2013, the final review of the ASB Futsal National League season and the ASB Girls and Women’s Tournament.

Futsal has continued to grow at a rapid rate with 43,441 people participating in league, programmes and festivals in the last year. The numbers have far exceeded our target figure of 30,000 for 2013.

During 2014 we will continue to create awareness of, and provide opportunities in, futsal at all levels, while simultaneously

continuing to improve the service and delivery of existing activities to ensure our participant levels remain high.

From March onwards, two new exciting programmes, the NZF Futsal Level One Coaching Course, and the much anticipated NCEA aligned College Futsal Programme will come online. The NZF Futsal Level One will provide the required knowledge for futsal coaches to effectively lead teams in the federation futsal leagues and the dedicated futsal season. Meanwhile, our NCEA-aligned College Futsal Programme will develop our next generation of players, coaches, referees and administrators. For the first

time, college students will be upskilled on programme delivery and will link up with their local primary schools to deliver the successful Ministry of Education-aligned Futsal in Schools Programme. Best of all, they earn credits in all four areas as they play, coach, referee and organise futsal.

Happy reading and I look forward to updating you in the next quarterly issue of the Power of Five.

JANUARY - MARCH NORTHERN GO FROM WOODEN SPOON TO CHAMPIONSHIP IN TWELVE MONTHS Northern claimed the 2012/13 ASB Futsal National League in dramatic fashion in Wellington in March with a 2-1 extra time win over Capital Futsal in the final.

The win completed a meteoric rise for Northern after their bottom place finish in their debut 2011/12 season.

Northern only scraped into the semi finals in fourth place after a 5-1 final round win over Mainland Futsal edged them into the knockout phase on goal difference.

From there, they despatched cross-town rivals and 2011/12 champions Auckland 2-0 in the semi-final, before saving their best until last, with ex-Morrocan international Hicham Kamri’s late winner securing the title for the triumphant Northern team.

Futsal South’s Brazilian pivot Carlos Hermann scooped the golden boot award with 14 goals across the three series, while his countryman and teammate Daniel Bocatios won the golden glove award for best goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Capital’s newly capped Futsal White Kareem Osman finished an excellent season by picking the award for most valuable player in the league.

EXPANDED SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP A GREAT SUCCESS 41 teams across three competitions took part in the two day ASB New Zealand Secondary Schools National Futsal Championships in Wellington in March.

Hawke’s Bay’s Havelock North High School emerged as champions in the 20 team Senior Boys tournament, beating St Paul’s Collegiate in a pulsating final.

Mount Albert Grammar, coached by Paul Marshall were too strong in the Open Girls’ Grade, demolishing Wellington High School 10-0 in the final, while Lincoln High School proved too strong for Burnside High School in the Junior Boys Grade Final, winning 5-1.

APRIL - JUNE FUTSAL WHITES STRUGGLE IN HEAT OF TAHITI A red hot Tahiti completed a 3-0 clean sweep of New Zealand’s Futsal Whites in the first international futsal series to be held in French Polynesia recording 3-1, 4-2 and 2-0 victories.

With only four Futsal Whites in the twelve man squad having prior overseas experience, Scott Gilligan had an eye on the future when New Zealand embarked on the tour.

The Oceania second-ranked Tahiti continued their rise in the five-a-side game, taking full advantage of the concrete-based

home court and vocal home support at a jam-packed Napoleon Spitz Stadium in Papeete. The Aito Arii employed a resolute, compact defence throughout the series, and counter attacked quickly, with star playmaker Mote Tino a constant threat.

New Zealand would later get their chance for ‘revenge’ of the series whitewash in the third place playoff of the OFC Futsal Championship Invitational in July.

FUTSAL WHITES ON THE ROAD NZ Football Futsal and the Futsal Whites hit the road over the winter with a series of futsal roadshows in each of the seven football federations of New Zealand.

Designed to launch NZF Futsal’s new dedicated futsal season - ‘Kicking it All Year Round’, where club and school football players of all levels and ages are invited to extend their season with futsal, the roadshows featured exhibtion matches with the Futsal Whites taking on local federation representative teams.

Excellent crowd numbers around the country enjoyed their first taste of top-notch futsal, with a number of teams proving great competition for the star-studded Futsal Whites line-ups.

Also on the menu was the ‘Introduction fo Futsal’ Courses for those new to the game, as well as fun, festival styled activities for players new to the game.

NZF FUTSAL AND DUNEDIN SCHOOL TEAM UP TO PILOT NEW PROGRAMME

The winter months saw the launch of a new futsal schools programme, with girls-only Queen’s High School in Dunedin the first to roll out an innovative Sport in Education project.

The College Futsal Programme, led by Karen Palmer, saw students being able to pick up credits towards NCEA Level One through developing and organising futsal activities within the school and also at a local primary school.

The programme will be rolled out nationwide in 2014.

JULY - SEPTEMBER FUTSALROOS OVERPOWER FUTSAL WHITES IN WELLINGTON The second annual TransTasman Cup between the Futsal Whites and Futsalroos was played in July and finished in an emphatic 3-0 series victory to Stephen Knight’s experienced Australian team.

The series was run in parallel with the ASB National Junior and Youth Festival and played over three consecutive evenings at Wellington’s ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.

After taking out the first game 3-0, Australia hammered the Futsal Whites 7-0, before easing past the hosts in the third game 4-0. The final game had to be stopped for several minutes following a large earthquake which rocked the capital and sent spectators and players fleeing from the court area.

ASB JUNIOR & YOUTH YOUTH NATIONALS BIGGEST & BEST EVER

36 teams across five competitions took part in an expanded three day ASB National Junior & Youth Championships in Wellington in July.

Teams from six of the seven federations in the youth grade enjoyed a highly competitive event with Capital, Mainland and Central in particular showing excellent depth throughout all age groups.

Once again the 10s and 12s grades featured the innovative festival format, with a combination of 18 minute games and a

Manickum’s five goal haul set the tone for a solid tournament for Scott GIlligan’s side, who qualified for the knockout phase after a 7-2 victory over New Caledonia on Match Day 3.

FUTSALROOS WIN OFC INVITATIONAL BUT FUTSAL WHITES FINISH TOP OCEANIA TEAM Australia beat Malaysia 5-1 in the all-AFC final of the OFC Futsal Championship but New Zealand claimed the unofficial ‘Kings of Oceania’ title with a dogged 1-0 win over Tahiti in the tournament’s third-place playoff.

FUTSALWHITES STUN SOLOMONS FOR SEVEN

In the Junior Festival, Capital took out the 10s, while Auckland narrowly pipped Central to capture the 12s. Mainland prevailed in both the 14s and 19s sections of the youth competition, while Capital topped off a great weekend by taking out the 16s title.

The Futsal Whites won their first international since 2011, hammering two time FIFA Futsal World Cup finalists Solomon Islands 7-3 in their opening fixture of 2014 OFC Futsal Invitational, in Auckland in late July.

Propelled by a well-organised defence, decisive counter-attacking and an outstanding individual performance

New Zealand went into the match with everything to prove following four consecutive losses to the Tahitians since 2011 and a narrow semi-final loss to Australia on the previous evening. They were rewarded early for their endeavours with the only goal of the game by the excellent Daniel Burns. A hurculean defensive effort followed and despite the Tahitians peppering the New Zealand goal with a mammoth fifty shots over forty minutes, the Futsal Whites were not to be denied their moment of glory.

OCTOBER - DECEMBER AUCKLAND ON TOP AFTER SERIES ONE OF ASB FUTSAL NATIONAL LEAGUE

Auckland entered Series Two of the ASB National Futsal League as the top side after finishing the opening weekend of the competition unbeaten on their home court at the ASB Stadium in Auckland.

Futsal South also enjoyed an excellent series by finishing the weekend unbeaten, while last season’s champions Northern, and a much-improved Central-Manawatu got themselves on track for a top four playoff spot.

NZF LAUNCH NEW COACHING PROGRAMME Wellington’s ASB Indoor Sports Centre continued to live up to its name as the ‘Home of Futsal’ by hosting the launch of the pilot of New Zealand Football Futsal’s Level 1 Coaching Award in November.

The new Coaching Award was designed as the second step on the New Zealand futsal coaching pathway following the successful implementation of the twohour ‘Introduction to Futsal Course’ on the NZF Futsal Roadshows earlier in 2013.

Futsal Development Officers from the North Island, along with coaches, players and volunteers from Capital Futsal gathered for the four-hour pilot course under instruction from New Zealand Football’s Grassroots Development Manager Owain Prosser and Futsal Whites coach Scott Gilligan.

FUTSAL SOUTH ON TOP, WHILE AUCKLAND PLUMMET IN SERIES TWO Despite losing two of their five games over the weekend, Futsal South found themselves sitting on top of the ASB Futsal National League after Series Two in Wellington in November. Auckland - leaders after Series One, endured a dismal weekend, with a draw against Mainland delivering their only point from five games.

Meanwhile, hosts Capial and Central Hawke’s Bay catapulted themselves into

playoff contention, picking up 11 and 10 points respectively from their five games.

Northern also put in a solid display with three wins and a draw to keep their postseason aspirations on track.

WaiBOP were the other team of note, enjoying their best ever series, the highlight being a first time win over Auckland, 3-2 in their final game of the weekend.

AUCKLAND RECLAIM TITLE, CAPITAL LOSE THIRD FINAL IN FOUR SEASONS Auckland reclaimed the title of ASB Futsal National League in December, taking a 3-1 win over Capital in the Grand Final at Pettigrew Arena in Napier.

Two goals from player/coach Nathan Robertson secured the title for the Auckland side, while goalkeeper Elias Billeh also netted as his side defended against Capital’s use of the flying keeper in the closing period of the game.

Capital got on the board during the second half courtesy of an Auckland own goal. Auckland and Futsal White skipper Marvin Eakins – who was named as the New Zealand Futsal Player of the Year after the final said the playoffs saw the team get the results they needed by playing in a variety of ways.

“The final was a good game and Capital were definitely up for it,” Eakins said.

“They controlled big parts of the game with a lot of possession and we defended a lot.

“In the semi-final win over Central Hawke’s Bay we were in control and it was

probably the best we’ve played. It was a complete performance.”

After dominating the 2011-2012 competition by winning every match, Eakins said it was satisfying for the Auckland side – which began Series Three outside the top four, to triumph by following a new path this time around.

Beginning the weekend outside the top four, Auckland stormed to the head of the table, winning all four of their matches, starting with Friday’s key 5-4 victory over Northern. This was followed by wins over Futsal South, Central Manawatu and Waikato Bay of Plenty.

of talented young players on display in all teams. This is sure to benefit the Futsal Whites in future times.

EXPANDED FORMAT GREAT SUCCESS Mainland were crowned Women’s champions for the third successive year in an expanded ASB Nationals Women’s championship in Wellington in December.

The Cantabrians overcame a rapidlyimproved Northern side in a tense final after a weekend of hard fought futsal between teams from six New Zealand federations and a regional selection from New Caledonia.

In the Under 15 Girls Tournament, Capital were too strong for Mainland in the final, prevailing 9-2 on aggregate in a twolegged affair.

INTERVIEW

2013 has been a watershed year for Daniel Burns. The Canterbury-based utility capped a series of excellent performances for the Futsal Whites in the OFC Futsal Championship Invitational in July, with a stunning solo goal against New Caledonia followed by the only goal of the game in the third-place playoff with Tahiti.

His terrific form continued into the domestic season, where, despite an indifferent campaign by Mainland in the ASB Futsal National League, he still managed to pick up the Most Valuable Player award for the league.

Power of Five recently caught up with the likeable Cantabrian to discuss his eventful Futsal Whites season and his plans for 2014 and beyond.

Tell us about your early days in futsal – when did you first begin playing? How did you get started?

I begin playing futsal back in 2006/07 when I was about 19. My futsal career started when my mates and I had been playing indoor soccer for a while and decided to give futsal a go. So we entered our team into one of the local futsal competitions and ever since then we haven’t stopped playing!

What do you like about futsal?

Well it’s fun, enjoyable and challenging.

You get to see more of the ball, it’s a faster game, and you have to work harder and think faster, always be switched on when you’re on the court, and you can express yourself as much as you like.

What about football – do you still play or are you a futsal specialist?

Of course I still play!! Football is in the blood just like futsal is now, and I still enjoy both forms of the game. I feel both forms of the sport benefits the other. So you could say I’m a futsal and football specialist.

2013 was a great year for you, both in the ASB Futsal National League and in the Futsal Whites internationals. Your form was very consistent. Were you happy with your year in futsal? If so, what do you put your good form down to?

Yes, I was very pleased with my performance for 2013. It was definitely a good year for me and the Futsal Whites. It is hard to be consistent all year round, I’m guessing I just got a bit of luck. For me, I definitely have to put my good form down to having such a good support team back in Christchurch. I really have to take my hat off to the coaching staff and my Futsal Whites team mates as well, I believe that the coaching staff and players played a big part in helping my form in 2013. The team gel well together and grew strong as a team with every game we played which helped me to relax and just play my natural game.

If you look back on the Futsal Whites year – it was a tough beginning with the trip to Tahiti and then the TransTasman Cup, where the Futsalroos were to too strong for New Zealand. Do you feel the side learned a lot from those experiences? In what ways did those tough games help

the team achieve their eventual third place placing at the OFC Futsal Championships?

Yes, it was a really tough start to the year.

It was definitely a huge learning curve for us as Futsal Whites losing these games.

It not only gave us experience on the international stage, but we learned a lot about what we need to work on as a team and as individuals. These games also helped us as players to gain international competition which is hard to come by, and before a big competition like OFC playing against the likes of the Futsalroos was definitely another step up and helped us achieve the next level of performance that we needed to gain third place at the OFC tournament.

The OFC Futsal Championship was very much a landmark tournament for the Futsal Whites. Were you surprised by the result in the Solomon Islands game?

Yes - when the final whistle blew at the end of the game it took a while to sink in that we had just beaten the OFC champions. It was a was huge achievement for us as a team and to beat them by 7-3 was incredible. I always believed that we could beat the Solomon Islands but 7-3 - wow!

The New Caledonia game and then the Tahiti games were also very important, especially after the loss to Malaysia.

Were you happy with the way the team responded to the pressure of those games?

After the loss to Malaysia, there was definitely a lot more pressure on us to

win these games. I believe that the boys handled the pressure professionally and that was due to the coaching staff who helped take a lot of that pressure away from us as players. This made us focus on taking it one game at a time.

You had a lot of court time during the tournament. Obviously you scored your fair share of goals but Scott Gilligan clearly sees you as an important ‘cog’ in the Futsal Whites machine? What qualities do you feel you bring to the team?

One of the qualities I bring to the team is my ‘never-die’ attitude, plus I’m always positive and try to support my team mates on and of the court. That, and having a professional attitude.

What about Scott Gilligan’s influence on the team? What has he brought into the environment that has made a difference?

Scott’s influence has been massive on the team. He has brought a lot of knowledge and experience into the environment which has created a massive change in the way we all think and play futsal.

It’s another big year in futsal for the Futsal Whites, starting with another TransTasman Cup in July. What does New Zealand have to do - or change - in order to beat Australia’s Futsalroos.

I don’t really think that we need to change too much. Scott is doing a great job - if anything I believe we just need to fine tune a few areas and just keep doing what we are doing.

Do you think the Futsal Whites have the players to topple the 20th ranked side in the world?

Of course we do. We have some great players here in New Zealand, I believe the only thing we are lacking is that our ability is not as quite as good as the Futsalroos yet. But where are getting there.

Mainland had a very disappointing ASB Futsal National League in 2013 – the team was very inconsistent and finished well outside the playoffs. What do you feel is required to improve in 2014?

Yep - we sure did! There is definitely a lot we can improve on as a team - to start with - player discipline, defensive structure and transition when we lose the ball.

What about the ASB Futsal National League overall. Do you think the competition is getting tougher every year?

For sure the competition is growing each and every year which is good to see. Teams are getting stronger with new players coming through, young and old. I believe this makes for a closer competition and any team can beat any other team on their day!

Looking back on the past few years, what have been the highlights for you in your Futsal career so far?

Going to the AMF Futsal World Cup in Colombia was a big highlight. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. Plus definitely coming third at last year’s OFC Futsal Invitational to become ‘kings’ of Oceania.

What about the future for futsal in New Zealand. Have you seen some young players who can one day make the step up to international level? Anyone in particular?

The future looks very bright as there are a lot of very promising players out there with the potential to step up to international level one day. Some players to watch out for would be Sam Mitchell, Dominic O’Sullivan, Aaron Ball and Michael Freeman.

What about your future? What are your plans for 2014?

At the moment my future is an open book. My plans for 2014 would be just to continue on with the good form from 2013

and see where it takes me.

Beyond that, would you like to achieve in futsal?

My ambition for futsal would be to try and push my futsal ability as far as it can take me. I would like to gain more experience by playing overseas somewhere, and getting paid to do it would be a dream come true.

Outside futsal – what do you do? Are you working? Any other hobbies?

I work full time for a printing company as a bindery manager.

My other hobbies (if I’m not playing futsal), are playing football or getting out on the mountain bike. I also enjoy watching movies and I play a lot of Xbox!

Central Auckland Futsal Centre Term 4 2013 had the first women’s only Futsal League. The Auckland Belles went through the competition undefeated and were deservedly crowned champions.

Women’s and junior leagues will also be available for various ages, starting in February.

Papakura Futsal League Once again Papakura ran a futsal competition for youth in Term Four with three grades. All Blues, A.S. Roma and Rewa were the winners in their respective competitions.

Avondale Fun Futsal Centre Sunday afternoons was when you would find twenty-three juniors of various ages enjoying the Avondale Fun Futsal Centre.

This will be starting up again soon.

South Auckland Futsal Centre With the venue moving to a more convenient location in Papatoetoe more growth is expected for this futsal centre.

Junior leagues will be offered as well as the senior competition.The excitement will be kicking off in February also.

Papatoetoe Sports Centre Futsal League Junior futsal was played on the turf with players and parents enjoying the futsal and the sun (photo, above). This is the second year of running the junior league and the futsal always leaves the kids wanting more!

Mt Wellington Tennis Club Fun Futsal Centre Twenty-six girls and boys took part in the fun on the tennis courts at the Mount Wellington Tennis Club. The coaches made sure there was a lot of fun had on the great surface. Term One will be underway very soon.

Waikato/Bay of Plenty 2014 promises to be another great year for WaiBOP Futsal with the game continually growing around the region.

Futsal is now being played in all six WaiBOP regions.

The focus for 2014 will be to continue growing the futsal club season for junior, youth and senior teams, getting more clubs playing the game and by launching federation wide tournaments to broaden the opportunities and level of competition across the six centres.

2014 will also see more opportunities for girls and women to play the game with the launch being the WaiBOP Girls and Women’s Tournament at the ASB Arena in Tauranga on Saturday 12 April.

Currently in Central we have leagues running in Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay. Overall we have 106 teams playing. We started an interschool and club league in Palmerston North running out of Arena Manawatu. These were started on the back of the school programmes run by the new Futsal Development Coach Josh Margetts.

Josh will now grow what he has established in Palmerston North and also look to establish activities in Wanganui.

He has been a great addition to the Central team and we know he will be very successful in the Manawatu region.

The Term Four leagues were a great success. We changed the format for the Under 8s to half-court four-a-side with smaller goals. Instantly you could see the difference, the younger kids had to adapt very quickly to the smaller court and you could see the difference in skill at the end of the programme. This was run by Futsal Whites squad member Mitch Webber

and at the end of each game he would introduce the kids to a new skill.

Many Hawke’s Bay teams will be making the trip and we will also be looking to send a few teams from the

Palmerston North Interschool League down to compete. Hopefully we can bring the Senior Boys Championship back to Central again.

After some good improvement from both Central ASB Futsal National League sides, some of the high performers from the squads are waiting to hear if they made the next Futsal Whites training squad. We are expecting good representation from the region, there are definitely some boys from the Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu squad that can add to the ever-improving Futsal Whites team.

Futsal continued to show why it is one of the fastest growing sports in the world with player numbers climbing in the capital throughout 2013.

Our college leagues are the perfect example of this, increasing to the point that we had to split the age groups and run them over two nights at the ASB Centre.

We envisage futsal’s popularity will continue soaring next year with an estimated 100 college teams playing in Term One in 2014.

One of the highlights from 2013 had to be the ASB Junior and Youth Nationals which were held in July during the day, with the TransTasman Cup taking place in the evening.

It was great to see Wellington transformed into ‘The Capital of Futsal’, as teams from all over New Zealand turned out for the chance to be crowned national champions, as well as being treated to the games between the Futsal Whites and Futsalroos in the evening.

In true Wellington style, we even managed to coordinate a magnitude 6.5 earthquake to scare our neighbours from across the Tasman!

There were plenty of results to be proud of last year, with the Capital boys making it through to the finals of the National Futsal League on the back of some great support from local fans.

Christmas came early for Wellington in December with the arrival of the ASB Girls and Womens Nationals at the ASB Centre.

Our teams did us proud and produced the best present you could ask for, with the Under 15 Girls’ team taking home the national trophy.

Our recreational leagues will continue at Bishopdale YMCA on Sundays and Wednesdays with competitions for junior, youth, men, women, social and mixed being offered. Currently, all our leagues (with the exception of Nelson) are based in Christchurch and we hope to expand and begin leagues in the wider Mainland region in the coming year.

Our school leagues will continue at CPIT and Cashmere High School on Wednesdays and Mainland will be holding its Regional Secondary Schools Tournament on the 22/23 March at the Pioneer Sport and Recreation Centre.

This will be a great opportunity for school teams to compete against others from the region and offers excellent preparation for ‘nationals’ at the end of March. Getting ‘Futsal in Schools’ up and running will also be a big objective for us in the coming year.

In our continued search for potential multi-court venues, we held a pilot futsal tournament at ASB Park at the end of Term Four. Teams competing in our school leagues were invited to attend the tournament, free of charge, and play up to three rounds of games. Ten teams competed in the tournament and feedback from the players, teachers and parents were positive, making ASB park a viable option in the short term.

In order to upskill our futsal community, we will be running the Level One Futsal Referee and Introduction to Futsal Coaching courses in February/March.

This will provide an opportunity for those involved to learn other aspects of the game.

Special congratulations must be reserved for our womens team who won an unprecedented third consecutive national title in December. Their continued dominance of the sport is remarkable and a credit to themselves. Well done girls!

Futsal South

Futsal South has had a great year in 2013. The results have surpassed all our expectations, especially with our rapid growth over the last four years. In Term Four we followed up with our biggest number of teams participating throughout

our adult and school competitions with 176 primary school teams playing in our Wednesday competition.

There were 88 games in three and a half hours on sixteen courts. Logistically, with the number of teams and followers this was one of our greatest achievements!

In Term Four 2013 we had 332 teams playing in Futsal South competitions.

Overall for the year we recorded 706 teams that entered and played in a wide range of age-group competitions.

Our Futsal in Schools programmes ran right through to December with 5500 students receiving on average five to eight sessions each during the year.

In August we ran our first ever Year 7 and 8 intermediate school competition with 21 teams.

l The Futsal South ASB Futsal National League team performed well in the 2013 competition and was sharing the lead after two rounds. Unfortunately they found the final round a bit more competitive and after a couple of losses ended up in fifth position, just missing the playoffs.

In 2014, Futsal South is off again, beginning with our Coaching in Schools programme. We started coaching on 3 February and we are booked out for all of Term One. The adults have started with a quick four-week warm up, following this with a twelve-week competitive competition.

The school age competitions begin 25 February.

Futsal South also ran a men’s and women’s competition on 8/9 February for Dunedin’s New Zealand Masters Games.
