ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL PIERCERS CONFERENCE & EXPOSITION!

hether this is your first time joining us at the Association of Professional Piercers’ conference, or your tenth, WELCOME. Personally, this is my 11th time at the APP conference and I love it more and more every time. My first conference was in 2002. I had owned my own shop for about a year and had been piercing for a handful more. I showed up in Las Vegas terrified. I had no idea what to expect, I didn’t know anyone, I was just some piercer kid from New Hampshire. I walked into the Tropicana and must have looked like a deer in the headlights just standing in the lobby kind of star struck by all the piercers I recognized from online (before Facebook there was this amazing website called BME). This nice guy in a Hawaiian shirt came up and introduced himself as Gus and asked if I needed help finding the convention area. Fast forward to 2014 and I am here at conference as an APP member, as an instructor, and I get to see all the great friends I have made in the industry over the years. Don’t spend all week in your hotel room, or at the bar, or even all in classes. Walk up to those piercers you recognize and start a conversation. Move around a lot, check out everything you can. Not just in the hotel but get out and see the strip. This conference can be both career and life changing, make the most of it. —Ryan Ouellette, APP Member/Instructor

STAY HEALTHY! Please take care of yourselves during this eventful week – get enough rest, stay well hydrated, eat regular meals – check out the Yoga classes and work out the stress or toxins. Need extra support? Please let a Board Member, Mentor, or SUPER volunteer know. All of these people can be identified by special ribbons! Friends of Bill W. meets Monday at 6:45pm; and as needed. Just for Today Al-Anon meets Tuesday 5:45pm. Meditation Sessions will be Wed. at 3-3:30; and Thursday from 12:30 to 1. 2014 APP CONFERENCE 7

ORIENTATION INFO

WELCOME TO THE 19TH ANNUAL

THE APP REQUESTS THAT YOU READ & ACKNOWLEDGE THE FOLLOWING.

As an attendee of the APP Conference, you are a representative of the Industry to the general public, the hotel staff, and all other Conference attendees. This representation necessitates that you conduct yourself in a courteous, professional manner while attending the Conference. Your behavior while at the Conference, in the host hotel, in other hotels, and while in Las Vegas during the time of the Conference reflects on the APP and the Industry as a whole. Participating in illegal or disruptive activities (use of drugs/ excessive drinking), damaging property, etc. can all create a potential problem for you, the APP and the Body Piercing community. Posted signs and verbal instructions from APP representatives pertain to ALL attendees and vendors as we have ALL of the participants’ best interests in mind. Volunteers are giving their time so that everyone can have a successful conference – please be cordial to them when they are enforcing Conference rules and regulations. The Exposition Hall has specific hours and we ask for your assistance in making sure the Hall opens and closes on time by paying attention to announcements and finishing up your purchases/sales in a timely manner. Inappropriate language, sexist, racist or otherwise rude or offensive comments have no place at a professional event. Unwanted advances and/or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated. All attendees should be allowed to feel safe and comfortable at our event. The APP takes safety and security at this event seriously. If you have knowledge of any activity that could potentially be a danger to the public and/or any individual at Conference, you should bring these concerns to the attention of an APP Board Member immediately. Despite our best efforts, theft is a potential reality at an event and venue of this size; please keep an eye on your personal belongings and assist your fellow attendees in doing the same. Activities that are illegal in the “real world” are illegal at Bally’s and at the Conference – this includes underage drinking, drug use, underage gambling, drinking while driving, physical abuse, theft, etc. Absolutely no piercing, scarification, branding or implants, or any other form of body modification from hotel rooms at the host hotel or at the Conference will be tolerated. Any APP members participating in these types of activities risk losing their membership. Any member or non-member risks expulsion from the hotel and/or Conference. This type of behavior contradicts everything the APP represents and promotes in its educational outreach and mission. ANY food and beverage not contracted by Bally’s but brought into the hotel to serve a group or at a Conference event or function violates our Contract with the host hotel and can result in a substantial fine to the APP. No foods or beverages are allowed on the Expo Floor, in Classrooms or other events that is not for personal use. No food or beverage of any kind is allowed to be brought into the opening party or the banquet dinner. Smoking is not allowed in any of Bally’s Convention areas, hallways, lobbies, restaurants, or other indoor common areas. This includes the banquet hall and surrounding area. Smokers will need to return to the casino floor in order to smoke. Smoking is allowed ONLY in the Casino area and designated outdoor areas. This is the law in Las Vegas. Both the APP and individual can be fined for smoking in non-smoking areas. Please comply. All product and jewelry materials, in particular natural or wildlife, must have been legally mined, harvested, imported, obtained and/or fashioned. Booth-holding vendors are welcome to offer private product showings from their hotel rooms, however, no vending from hotel rooms will be tolerated. Booth holders are not allowed to bring new stock onto the vending floor once the floor is set. Stock in small quantities can be removed and returned each day for security reasons with the permission of the APP. These are regulations (and sometimes laws) that MUST be followed at the Conference. Failure to comply can result in arrest, eviction from the Hotel and/or Conference, and/or penalty or fines applied to the individual and/or the APP. The APP Board Members & Conference organizers thank you!

WE ARE HERE TO HELP!

The Conference Mentor program is designed to reach out to new conference attendees, and help them get the most out of their trip. We understand that spending a week in Vegas with hundreds of industry professionals can be overwhelming, so we have assembled a team of conference veterans that are here specifically to help you along the way. We will be at Orientation and available during Sunday evening & Monday morning’s registration. We are happy to help you go over your schedule and pick classes (It’s a great idea to have some input, since you won’t be able take every class in just one year!), as well as give you any advice we can on how to meet new people and make professional contacts. In addition, we are here for *emotional* support. Remember, the piercing industry is a COMMUNITY, and we do our best to take care of each other. The Mentor team will be wearing badges all week long, so you can stop us anytime if you need help or just need a familiar face for reassurance.

GOING TO CLASS & GETTING CREDIT WHEN YOU DO (NO MORE TICKETS – NO MORE CLASS CARDS)

• MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR BADGES! Badges are still required to attend anything at Conference. • Everyone needs to have a printed copy of their AGENDA – if you don’t have one you can get one at the Registration Desk. Please hang on to it – this document is key to you getting into your classes and getting credit for them! • Full Conference Pass Attendees can still attend most classes even if they are not listed on their agendas. They MUST, however, have any workshop class and CPR/FIRST AID on their agenda if they want to attend these classes. • Attendees going to workshop classes must have signed up for the session they want to attend. This session will be reflected on your AGENDA. Make sure if you are attending a workshop session – you are attending the correct session. Due to class size limits you can only attend the session which you signed up for. Any changes will need to be done at Registration. • NEW! —If the workshop session you want is full - you can be issued a “no-show” pass. This pass allows you into the workshop session if there are seats which are not filled due to registered attendees not showing up for the class. To utilize your pass you need to go to the session, and wait until the volunteer at the door lets you know if you have a seat. Passes are accepted in numbered order. (only available to Full Conference attendees / Registrant Type dependent). • The CPR/First Aid classes must also be signed up for in advance as there is a separate fee. • Remember to silence your phones and other gadgets as you enter the classroom. • Not all classes/instructors allow recording of their class – check the sign on the door to see if audio/video recording is allowed. • Remember to be respectful of the instructors/facilitators, and other attendees at all times. We ask attendees to refrain from talking loudly during class or creating any disturbances. • There’s a time and a place for drinking and partying – in the classroom is not the place. Please do not bring alcoholic beverages to class. • Please use the microphone provided to ask any questions – everyone is here to learn, they need to hear the question too. • Please understand our volunteers are doing their jobs – you might not agree with the rules, but please be nice to our volunteers. If you have a concern or complaint, please take it up with a manager. • At the door of each class the volunteer will check your badge, check your agenda, and scan your agenda. This information will be used to give you credit for the class. If you don’t get scanned – you won’t get credit! • If you are late to class, you may be too late to get credit. You cannot miss more than 15 minutes of a class and still get credit for it. While you can still attend classes, you may lose your seat in a workshop if you are more than 15 minutes late. Don’t be late, leave, or take too long on a break or you may not get credit for the class. • Please fill out a review sheet for each class – your feedback is important to the development of our Conference.

Thank you for attending and following these guidelines; we hope you enjoy your experience!

INNOVATORS AWARD

Gold Jewelry: Sales and Marketing INSTRUCTORS: Noah Babcock, Nate Janke LOCATION: Bronze 2/3

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

This Class will be specifically geared towards increasing the sales of high end gold body jewelry within the piercing studio. It will cover multiple topics such as jewelry displays, appropriate price structures based upon regional tendencies, how to get consistent results by selling with confidence, how to appropriately “profile” customers and alter sales tactics based upon individual personality, and the overall evolution from piercers to stylists and designers. If you are a studio that currently sells gold, or do not currently do so and wish to, this class is paramount. The industry is changing, and there is a far more diverse demographic of potential clients now more than ever. This class will give you the tools needed to appeal to a wider spectrum of tastes, and in turn increase sales and overall profit margins in the studio.

11:00-1:00 Versatility in Piercing Techniques (A) INSTRUCTORS: Ed Chavarria, Chris Glunt, Brian Skellie, Dana Dinius LOCATION: Bronze 4 The multi-technique workshop will focus on the many ways to perform a successful piercing. We will discuss various techniques to achieve the common piercings we do in our studios on a daily basis. We will focus on basic piercings with clamps, receiving tubes, and toolless techniques. The workshop will have both lecture and a practical hands on session broken into smaller groups so the instructors can have one on one time with the class attendees.

11:00-1:30 Working Clean Within Your Studio (A) INSTRUCTORS: Ryan Ouellette, Jesse Villemaire, A.J Goldman, Johnny Velez LOCATION: Palace 4/5 Core content: Examining safe work practices used in piercing services and equipment processing to lessen cross contamination incidents. We will discuss the steps you can take in setting up your work areas to minimize the effort needed to maintain an aseptic technique. We will also discuss proper transportation and decontamination of used tools to re-sterilize them as safely and efficiently as possible. A live demonstration of work practices will be used to illustrate multiple theories. Attendee questions and participation are encouraged.

14 2014 APP CONFERENCE

Workshops are flexible by nature and each class can be molded to the attendees’ needs through requests and questions. Additional content covered may include: how and when to don sterile gloves; how to adapt your set-up to a tool-free or disposable technique, how and when used tools need to be scrubbed or reprocessed (or if you need to process them at all), what kind of disinfectants should be used, and how to use them correctly.

1:00-5:00 Expo Floor: Vendor Move in – Shepard On-site An opportunity to move in early – and get a head start on set up! Note: 5:00-8:00 Expo Floor: Vendor Set-up - No move in of materials. Vendors MUST have already moved in all materials etc. in order to be able to set up on Monday night.

1:45-2:45 Round-Table Discussion: Disorders in the Industry FACILITATORS: Courtney Maxwell, Ash Misako LOCATION: Palace 6/7 It is no secret that people who have struggled with their mental health are often drawn to the world of body modification, and professional piercers certainly have their fair share of these symptoms and disorders. Fortunately, there are many times when our jobs can be healing and beneficial, and we can use our personal insights to help us relate to our clients. We would like to invite you to share and discuss the many ways we work with our strengths, and how we can learn to manage our weaknesses.

1:45-2:45 Spanish 101 for the Piercing Room INSTRUCTOR: Ed Chavarria LOCATION: Palace 1/2 Spanish 101 for the Piercing Studio is an intro or good brush-up for people who have a larger Latin American client base. The class is an overview of how to walk someone through your studio and give them a tour of your facility. It will review basic counter words and conversational phrases to make non-English-speaking clients feel at ease. It will also go over proper words and pronunciation for the most commonly used words in our studios. The focus of this class is to break barriers between piercers, counter staff, and their Spanish-speaking clientele.

3:30-7:30

Anodizing is Awesome! INSTRUCTOR: Brian Skellie LOCATION: Bronze 4

Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) INSTRUCTORS: John Johnson, Rick Frueh, Brian Oviatt, Chris Glunt LOCATION: Palace 1/2

Brian Skellie makes it easy for you to anodize your titanium and niobium body jewelry with detailed information and rationale, accompanied by video, demonstrations and step by step instructions. Topics covered will include: how and why to include anodization in your work flow for a cleaner and less reactive Ti and Nb surface finish; how to offer instant coloration/re-colorization for customers (as well as a scientastic live demonstration!); how can this surface finish process make a difference in your client’s healing results?; and how can you re-anodize client jewelry if the color has worn off? These questions and more will be answered in this class.

This in-depth course covers both regulations and training requirements of OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) and is unique in that it is taught and applied specifically to the body modification industry with a primary focus on body piercing. Integrated within the course will be a brief overview of Infection Control that focuses on the development and application of an industry-specific, comprehensive Infection Control Program. This year we pay special attention on Mycobacterium infections and how to prevent them in answer to recent noted outbreaks within the industry.

ELAYNE ANGEL has been a driving force to professionalize and promote body piercing since the 1980s. Within the industry she is known as a pioneer for developing piercing techniques, formulating aftercare guidelines, and innovating a variety of new piercing placements. Elayne is credited with popularizing tongue and triangle piercings, naming the lorum, and inventing the fourchette and Princess Diana piercings. Ms. Angel is the author of the best-selling comprehensive and informative reference book, The Piercing Bible—The Definitive Guide to Safe Body Piercing (Random House). It is now also available in Russian. For over eight years she has been living in Yucatán, Mexico. She travels the U.S. doing guest piercing at quality studios as an APP Business Member at Large. She also writes the monthly “Ask Angel” column for body art industry publication, Pain Magazine. Elayne has completed three previous terms on the Board—one as Outreach Coordinator, and two as Medical Liaison. She authors much of the organization’s literature, and has acted as an editor of the quarterly journal, The Point for numerous issues. For over a decade Elayne has been an instructor for classes at the annual APP Conferences. NOAH BABCOCK has been piercing professionally since 1995 and an APP member since 1999, and has been employed at Evolution, Inc. in Albuquerque, New Mexico since 1999. In his time at Evolution, Noah has consistently increased the usage and sales of high end body jewelry (particularly gold) in what many would regard as a difficult market to do so. Over the past 18 years he has been at the forefront of many industry innovations including multiple applications of surface piercing, hand bent industrial jewelry, multiple point industrial fittings, jewelry design, and utilization of high end precious metal body jewelry. Noah travels the country teaching site specific, in-studio courses on gold and fine gemstone body jewelry sales and marketing. 28 2014 APP CONFERENCE

When he is not piercing or instructing he can be found running about with his wife Donna and their two children. WEBSITE: www.evolutionbodypiercing.com SARVAS BERRY began piercing professionally in 2002 in his home town of Missoula, Montana. He spent two years learning the ropes before traveling the U.S. to explore other studios. His first stop was Portland, Oregon where Sarvas discovered how different standards from studio to studio could be. This taught Sarvas to always set the bar high for himself. In 2005 he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where he included freehand piercing and using a Statim into the mix. Sarvas has been a guest piercer at many of the country’s most renowned studios which has given him a unique perspective and well-rounded knowledge of how piercing is performed and received in the U.S. today. Since joining the APP in 2007, Sarvas has been an active and dedicated member. He holds himself and his industry to the highest possible standards and continues to be a positive representative of the piercing community. Sarvas was elected Membership Liaison in 2010 and is regularly active on the membership committee. In October, 2011 Sarvas became a level 1 Crossfit trainer and is currently working at Evolved Body Art in Columbus, OH. MIKE BINDRUP was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. Michael studied Communications during his undergraduate work at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and holds a Masters in Business Administration in Global Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona. Michael has over 16 years of Marketing Communications experience. He is a self-taught graphic designer with a love for marketing. He was the Managing Partner of a local advertising agency that he founded and ran for 8 years. Michael has also worked in the publishing, digital signage, and interactive media industries. Michael currently is the International Trade Program Manager and Business Development Advisor for the Nevada Small Business

Development Center in Las Vegas where he advises small business owners on management issues and delivers entrepreneurial training courses to Southern Nevada business community. Michael is also a citizen of the world. He has lived and worked in Chile, Mexico, France and Switzerland. He spends his spare time in the study of foreign languages, music and culture. He speaks fluent Spanish and is conversational in French and Italian. GEORG BIRNS is the principal Owner and President of Barbella, High Priestess Piercing & Tattoo and HTC Body Piercing. He’s twenty years into the industry and is still piercing. He grew up on the East Coast, was educated in the Midwest, and finally settled down on the West Coast where he is father to two young boys and husband to his lovely wife JoPants. He stays active in the community by doing body art education and outreach, body play gatherings, and numerous fundraisers. During the summers Georg brings the shop directly to the clients. High Priestess attends events, conventions and fairs with their mobile state-of-the-art studio. When he’s not piercing he enjoys the great outdoors, martial arts, coaching children’s seasonal sports, and spending time at home with his family. WEBSITE: http://www.highpriestess.com/ BRANDON “DANGER” BISHOP is the sole face behind Bishop Organics and co-owner of Artisan Piercing Boutique in Pittsburgh PA. Little is known about his origins, but rumors that he is the result of a wizard making tender love to a tree in a puddle of radioactive waste are greatly exaggerated. His love of woodworking and knowledge of lumber are a result of being raised in the mountains by a family of Sasquatches. Life as the adopted son in a squatch family can be monotonous and young Danger spent all his free time turning trees into small circles, the perfect upbringing for a life as a plug maker. He rejoined civilization after being rescued from the squatches by a travelling circus where he was put to work as a carpenter, but quickly escaped and began pursuing his dream of being the most famous wood circle manufacturer the body art community would ever know. In 2013, after many years of wild success, he grew bored with life as a world class playboy philanthropist and abandoned his yacht to settle in Pittsburgh to

give back to the community that had gotten him to where he was. In December of 2013 Danger valiantly decided to ignore his utter lack of shop experience or qualifications and, with friend and talented piercer Twitch[ard], opened their very own studio. When not making jewelry or fumbling his way through managerial aspects of shop ownership he enjoys expanding his skillsets and working on (read: blowing up) his motorcycles, genetically engineering a race of 50s style atomic monsters, and refuting the existence of Sasquatches in an effort to protect his family. He can also be found on two wheels forging trails across the abandoned super highways of post-apocalyptic America. WILL SPENCER was born in N.Y.C., terrorized a small town in New Jersey as a tiny boy, and lived in Connecticut until 1995. He started doing horrible piercings straight out of high school. As a young punk, Will started piercing on his dumb friends and himself. He became good enough to fool himself into thinking he knew what he was doing. In 1995 Will visited St. Louis and thought it was awesome, so he decided to relocate. He’s been living and piercing in St. Louis ever since, where he’s realized that knowing that he didn’t know everything was the first step to learning what he should know, thereby learning how to be a better piercer. Will has been lucky enough to work with some amazing, supportive, and patient people who have made it possible for him to own and run a number of successful studios. He spends most 38 2014 APP CONFERENCE

of his time at his biggest shop, TRX Tattoos and Piercing. He’s been an APP member, working closely with the organization, for many years. Currently on the Conference Committee, Will welcomes all comments or concerns. He very much looks forward to Conference every year; as he learns more about our industry during this week than in all the rest of the year combined. Will’s thrilled to be here again, and looks forward to seeing the people he already knows and getting to know those who he doesn’t. Bethra founded Virtue and Vice Body Piercing in 1995, which operated from the Timeless Tattoo location and then from Pain and Wonder after its acquisition in 2000. In an effort to keep up with current piercing related information she became a member of the APP in 1996. Her role shortly switched from student to teacher in 1998 when she was appointed as Secretary of the Association. Bethra immediately instituted the Association’s first elections and was duly elected to the position and served a three year term. Bethra was subsequently elected to the position of President and served an additional three year term in that position. After a three year break from the board she was re-elected to the board and appointed once again as Secretary and continues to serve as an Officer of the organization. Bethra has also provided countless courses of education to piercers, health care providers and lawmakers. JAMES WEBER fell in love with body piercing in the late 1980s, after discovering Gauntlet and PFIQ while studying jewelry and metalsmithing at the University of the Arts. After several years of practicing on himself and friends, he started piercing professionally in 1993 (shortly before receiving his BFA), and founded Infinite Body Piercing, Inc. in late 1994. Since that time, Infinite has gone on to become one of the busiest piercingonly studios in the U.S., staying at the forefront of body art education through its publications and website, infinitebody.com. James served two consecutive terms on the Board of Directors of the Association of Professional Piercers. In 2005 he was elected as the APP’s Medical Liaison, and then went on to serve as the APP’s President from 2008 to 2011. While on the board, he oversaw projects as diverse as the update to the APP’s graphic identity and copyright licensing, to a thorough review of the legal aspects of the organization, from election protocol to parliamentary procedure. From 2005 to 2012, James served as editor (with several years as co-editor, with Elayne Angel) of The Point: The Quarterly Journal of the Association of Professional Piercers. For over seven years and twenty-seven issues, he was responsible for taking The Point from a black-and-white newsletter to a full-color trade 40 2014 APP CONFERENCE
