been on some fabulous vacations with my husband. Our honeymoon in St. Lucia for one, as well as adventures in Costa Rica, Lake Tahoe and Montana. There have been incredible family vacations, too — the annual pilgrimage I made to Myrtle Beach as a child, and recent trips to Key West with my in-laws. I’ve even ventured out a few times with groups of relative strangers, traveling to France to study abroad, and to locales like Barbados and Berlin with fellow travel writers. But some of my most memorable getaways are those I’ve taken with my girlfriends. The trip my sister and I took to Sonoma was one of my all-time favorites. If I concentrate, I can still recall the tartsweet taste of cherries we bought from a roadside stand as we drove through the California countryside. I’ve never laughed harder than I did in Panama City Beach with a multi-generational group of women dancing the Tush Push at a local beach bar. And to this day, I can’t hear “Lime in the Coconut” without recalling the rainy spring break my roommates and I spent

My girlfriends and I have
a playlist titled “Road Trip,” as I suspect many friends do, which we reserve specifically for that purpose. Ours is filled with country classics by crooners like Reba McEntire, Patty Loveless and Shania Twain. Wherever we go, the country music comes along. So when we started looking for drivable destinations for our next adventure, there was only one natural choice. With its selection of trendy restaurants, shopping districts and entertainment venues, Nashville is great for a girlfriends’ getaway. For a memorable vacation, here are a few things you must do to get the most out of Music City. Listen to Live Music This may seem obvious, but if you’re looking for a particular genre or atmosphere, it helps to know where to go. The Bluebird Café is undoubtedly the most renowned venue in the city, characterized by its intimate, listening room environment and line-up of chart-topping songwriters. The Bluebird has helped launch the careers of artists like Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift, and continues to host songwriters of all genres. Shows take place at 6 and 9 p.m. nightly, and reservations are highly recommended. If bluegrass is more your style, an evening at The Station Inn is essential. The hole-in-the-wall listening room is the place to go to see the best bluegrass talent, where past regulars include Ricky Scaggs and Alison Krauss. Shows

start nightly at 9 p.m., and you can typically find a seat half an hour before they begin. When you’re ready to let loose, it’s time to hit a honky tonk. Located up and down Broadway in Downtown Nashville, these bars open as early as 10 a.m. with entertainment starting around noon and lasting late into the night. It’s not uncommon for the legendary Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, which features a different cover band on each of its three levels, to be packed out by 3 p.m. You never know when the Southern rock diva belting covers by Miranda Lambert and Melissa Etheridge might be the next big thing; famous early Tootsies regulars include Kris Kristofferson, Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson — the very same artists who later found themselves just down the street on the stage at the legendary Ryman Auditorium, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry and one of the most prestigious music halls in the world, which still hosts musicians of all genres today. Pay Tribute to the Queen of Country Music With 34 studio albums, two television shows, 11 movie roles, a book, a clothing line and countless awards under her belt, Reba McEntire is arguably the most successful woman in the industry. She’s also one of our personal favorites, so our girlfriends’ getaway wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to see “Reba: All the Women I Am.” On display

{ NASHVILLE } through June 8, the exhibit chronicles McEntire’s rise to fame and subsequent success and features five of her famous “Fancy” dresses, a collection of stage costumes, and mementos like the cowboy boots she wore as a child. While you’re there, check out the museum’s permanent exhibits, which trace the roots of country music and pay tribute to its legends and current stars. Have Some Hot Chicken Take a chicken breast, thigh or wing, apply a heavily spiced paste and flavorful breading, then pan fry it and serve it with white bread and pickles, and you’ve got hot chicken, a hot trend in kitchens across the South that originated in Nashville. In fact, every July 4th weekend, the annual Music City Hot Chicken Festival heats up with vendors and an amateur cooking competition. There are a few restaurants in town strictly devoted to the dish — most notably, Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack — but many of the finer dining establishments around town dish out their own versions of the Music City specialty. According to Nashville Lifestyles magazine, the rendition on the bar menu at Silo in Germantown is one of the “101 Reasons to Eat Up Nashville.” Made from Springer Mountain Farms boneless white meat, the dish is said to be wickedly hot, so we chose tamer options from the menu of sophisticated farm fare. Dishes change seasonally, but the culinary team works wonders with sea scallops, and if fried Brussels sprouts are available, order them without hesitation — served with slivered apples, red onions and molasses vinaigrette, they’re the perfect union of earthy and sweet. My personal recommendation for hot chicken is the snacksized portion at Holland House Bar & Refuge, which delivers just enough heat to ignite your taste buds without overpowering the flavorful crust. In addition to the obligatory pickles, there’s also a dollop of cold potato salad to assuage the spice. Hot chicken aside, Holland House is still my top choice for girls’ night out. Located in East Nashville, an up-and-coming neighborhood for local artists, the chic space is both industrial and elegant, with beaded chandeliers hanging from exposed ceilings, artisan cocktails with house-made ingredients, and a menu of seasonal Southern cuisine prepared with classical French techniques. Grab a Cup of Joe With a large population of artists, songwriters and college students in constant need of caffeine, coffeehouses are of the utmost importance in Nashville. Touted to be the oldest and most celebrated, Bongo Java started as a single café across from Belmont University and now operates five cafés and two wholesale businesses throughout the city. Our favorite is Fido, a coffeehouse/ casual restaurant combination with specialty lattes in flavors like 24

lavender and cardamom, an eclectic menu, and great location in the Hillsboro shopping district near Vanderbilt University. True coffee aficionados, however, will want to visit Barista Parlor in East Nashville, a hipster café that takes the handcrafted coffee concept to the extreme by offering beans from multiple roasters and multiple brewing methods. Just watching the TLC that goes into each cup is enough to bring out the coffee snob within. Rumor has it the sausage biscuits are euphoric, too. Another can’t-miss morning activity in Nashville is brunch at Tavern, which opens at 10 a.m. on weekends and often has an hour wait time by 10:30. Try The Nooner (omelet, bacon scramble, fried oysters, spicy sour cream and “white trash hash”) with a Tomatillo Bloody Mary. Sample Local Goods While in Nashville, be sure to seek out a few of the city’s original goodies. In Hillsboro, Bongo Java’s Hot & Cold is a onestop shop for Nashville-made treats. Not only can you order locally roasted Bongo Java coffee, you’ll also find Olive & Sinclair chocolates made with slow-roasted, stone-ground cocoa beans in flavors cinnamon chili, Las Paletas gourmet popsicles in flavors like avocado and chai tea, and Bang Candy Company’s handmade marshmallows. Down the street, Tennessee Chic boutique carries ingenious accessories by Nashville designer Day2Night — a bracelet that cleverly hides your hair tie is one item that should be in every girl’s jewelry box. Back in East Nashville, The Pharmacy Burger Parlor & Beer Garden cranks out housemade preservative-, caffeine- and corn-syrup-free sodas on an oldschool soda rail (try the Kentucky Mint for refreshment or the ice cream soda for your sweet tooth). And if you’re a craft beer girl, stop by the Filling Station in the 12South district for local brew suggestions (Yazoo is a popular choice) and a growler full of your favorite. PN

I almost hit the snooze button
and sank back into my pillow. Alarm clocks should be banned on vacation, should they not? Instead, a friend and I rose quickly and dressed quietly so as not to wake the other girls. Pouring coffee to go, we slipped out of our condo on Isle of Palms and made the short drive into Mount Pleasant for our picnic & paddle excursion with Nature Adventure Outfitters. A s soon as ou r k aya k s descended into Shem Creek, I internally applauded my decision to venture out this morning. The day was slightly overcast, offering protection from the rising sun, the heady scent of plough mud infiltrated my senses and the rhythmic circles I made with my paddle brought my body to life. Five minutes into our excursion, we were further awarded when we caught sight of two manatees lollygagging in an empty boat slip barely out of our reach. The next several hours we spent exploring the waters of Charleston harbor and the surrounding marsh, admiring a symphony of birds at Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary, picnicking on a barrier island, and losing count of the dolphin sightings. We had come here with our girlfriends for a number of reasons, but these up-close-and-personal natural encounters, so common in the Lowcountry, are what truly set this destination apart.

Resort Life Back in Isle of Palms, the rest of our group was getting a head start on some sun bathing at Wild Dunes Resort, a 1,600-foot oceanfront property stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway. With an array of accommodations, Wild Dunes is capable of catering to any vacationer’s needs, offering rooms and suites at the full-service Boardwalk Inn, additional rooms and suites at the multi-use Village at Wild Dunes, and one- to sevenbedroom condo and private home rentals throughout the property. Families in particular are drawn to the resort for its Island Adventures recreation program, extreme water sports, bike and walking paths, and numerous pools, but we found it just as well suited for a much-needed girlfriends’ getaway. To give ourselves a sense of seclusion, we opted for a condo rental a mile away from the center of the action. Here, we enjoyed comfortable accommodations, private beach access and a quiet pool, all an easy beach walk away from resort amenities. When we had enough sunbathing, we took a leisurely stroll along the ocean’s edge to the Grand Pavilion Café and Bar for some tropical libations. The poolside and oceanside eatery features happy hour specials and live entertainment

along with a menu of island favorites. Nearby, the Village at Wild Dunes offers fine dining at the Seaside Grill & Lounge, coastal cuisine and cocktails at The Lettered Olive & Lounge, and Hudson’s Market and Dune’s Deli for food on the go, but we headed back to our condo to take advantage of the resort’s Dinner Delivered service. Without bothering to change out of our bathing suits or touch a single appliance in our well-stocked kitchen, we enjoyed a low country boil of fresh shrimp, smoked sausage, corn and potatoes — all we had to provide was the good conversation. And since a girlfriends’ getaway would not be complete without sufficient spa opportunities, Wild Dunes delivers with signature services like a Shrimp & Grits facial at the Sand & Sea Salon. Island Hopping Outside the resort, Wyndham Vacation Rentals offers additional condo rentals in the Wild Dunes community, as well as throughout Isle of Palms and neighboring Sullivan’s Island. Though Wyndham guests do not have access to all the resort amenities, their well-appointed condos still offer proximity to the area’s resplendent recreation and relaxation, including pool and beach access, golf and tennis courses, wildlife tours, watersports and more. For a night out on the island, Morgan Creek Grill at Isle of Palms marina offers casual dining, beach music and unobstructed views of the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Windjammer on Front Beach beckons for late night dancing. On Sullivan’s Island, Poe’s Tavern and Salt at Station 22 are two favorites for great food, drinks and atmosphere, the former featuring indelible burgers named for an American literary legacy and the latter offering Southern staples and a raw bar in a stylish setting. Of course, one of the greatest benefits of an Isle of Palms beach getaway is the proximity to the exceptional shopping and dining of Charleston. While you’re there, be sure to make the trip into town for shopping along King Street, speakeasy-style drinks at the Bar at Husk and dinner in the garden at 82 Queen. End your weekend back in Charleston for Sunday Brunch at Magnolia’s — the country fried steak and eggs may sound like a man’s meal, but we found it divine. PN 28

My whereabouts were a rough
estimate at best and by now, I was starting to hear voices. Guessing I was somewhere near the top of Teton Pass with another 13 miles to go, I looked over my shoulder to see runners flying down the trail in my direction. Recognizing one of them, I debated trying to hitch on, but told my girlfriend I’d see her at the finish line. Shortly thereafter, I stopped to ask one of the rangers if he would mind sharing his snack. “I need salt,” I said, plopping into his chair as if I’d been invited. He smiled, handed over his bag of chips and said, “From around here?” Assuming I would at least name a neighboring state, he was surprised to hear my answer. What can I say? When you keep going back to the same destination, there’s a good reason. And so it is with Jackson Hole, Wyo., which immediately captured my heart almost 18 years ago. Ski resorts certainly lay claim to much of the hubbub, but this haven, 60 miles south of Yellowstone National Park, is laden with activities long after the snow melts. My girlfriend and I were here, among copious celebrities and cowboys, for a much-needed getaway that started with a memorable mountain run. Rustic Retreat Granted, a visit to this mountain town isn’t quite as easy as driving to the coast, but like anything else that requires extra effort, the reward is greater. Stepping into a backdrop with majestic peaks rising in every direction is a welcome unlike any other, and comes compliments of Grand Teton National Park. Jackson Hole has a healthy number of hotels, but only a

handful are designed to pamper and treat guests not as tourists, but as travelers. The family-run Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa, conveniently tucked at the end of a street three blocks from the shops and restaurants of Town Square, is one of them. Inspired by its breathtaking surrounding, this chic retreat is packed with all of the posh — minus any of the pretension — you’d expect from a member of Small Luxury Hotels of America. Walking into the lodge, we found the reception area on the left and, on the right, the renowned Wild Sage restaurant decorated with guests awaiting one of the finest meals in town. Our well-appointed room had European down comforters, a deep soaking tub and heavenly pillows we found hard to leave. Hunkering further into the cozy confi nes of this rustic hotel might be entertained elsewhere, but in Jackson Hole, it’s unthinkable.
Appeasing Every Appetite Downtown Jackson is easy to navigate. Simply set your sights on the signature attraction of Town Square — the distinctive arch, crafted out of hundreds of elk antlers. Snapping a photo in front of this landmark is all part of the experience, as is shopping for souvenirs and local wares along the boardwalk-fronted path. Nestled among the abundant T-shirts, cowboy hats and ski shops are a few shops not to be missed. Bet the Ranch, just off Town Square in Gaslight Alley, is my new favorite. This self-dubbed “pony-sized store” is filled with unique fi nds, notably an irresistible collection of vintage boots, belts and home decor goods. Terra is a stylish hotspot for women in search of a local fashion fix, and for high-end
home furnishings, Twenty Two Home is a must for timeless pieces, antiques, rugs and accessories sure to become conversation starters. More shopping awaits not too far away in Teton Village, but for us, a visit to the village was all about dinner at Spur Restaurant & Bar. Tucked into the Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa, Spur is said to “take elevated mountain cuisine to a new level,” and in the talented hands of Executive Chef Kevin Humphreys, the flavorinfused, seasonally fresh dishes do not disappoint. An obvious dedication to organic and sustainable farming is evident in Humphrey’s mindful selection of ingredients on the menu, where highlights include the Spur Buffalo short rib braised with Zonker stout (a local craft beer) served with cheese grits, Swiss chard and onion marmalade, and the Snake River Farms boneless Kurobuta pork chop accompanied with scalloped sweet potato, Swiss chard and chorizo vinaigrette. Of course, Jackson Hole has plenty of fabulous places to appease all of your appetites — indoor and out — but part of the fun is discovering them for yourself, regardless of your whereabouts. someone had told Smyrna resident Jason Swenk where he would be today as he stepped off the stage and received his diploma from Florida State University more than a decade ago, he probably wouldn’t have believed it. But over the course of the last 15 years, Swenk has transformed himself into a successful entrepreneur, author, web-designer, app developer, racecar driver, triathlon competitor, husband and father of two sons. “I look at everything in front of me as an opportunity,” Swenk said, “and I’ve been fortunate to have found in those opportunities so many things that I’m passionate about and to go after [them] with everything I’ve got.” It’s this undaunted drive to succeed that led us to select Jason Swenk as the subject of our very first Untameable feature. Designed to highlight local individuals with an untameable passion for their occupation and an unwavering pursuit of success, Swenk certainly fits the profile. Thinking outside the Business Box After graduating with a degree in business, Swenk, a collegiate level tennis player, opted to hang up his racket and follow in his father’s footsteps. “My dad was an excellent businessman and I always looked up to him in that aspect,” Swenk explained. “When I decided not to pursue tennis, I

stepped back and considered what else I could do, and I knew it was a good time for the marketing and computer business. So I just decided to jump in.” Swenk took a position as a web developer with Arthur Andersen, a large accounting firm out of Chicago. While most young graduates would be thrilled to grow and move up in a company like this, Swenk soon found himself growing increasingly unsettled in the position and eager to pursue a new road. “I learned a lot working at Arthur Andersen, but I think the biggest thing I learned was that I didn’t love the model of a big company. The longer I worked in big company marketing, the more I began to think, ‘There has to be a better way.’ And eventually I decided to try and find it.” After only a year, Swenk resigned from his position with Arthur Andersen to do just that. “I ventured out on my own and started designing websites for small- to medium-sized companies,” Swenk recalled. “Pretty quickly, I saw a shift in the market and realized there was a huge need to provide more than just a website for these companies. It started as a simple desire to try and meet that need, and then things grew from there.” What it grew into was Solar Velocity. Founded by Swenk in October 2000, Solar Velocity is a Smyrnabased digital marketing agency designed to work alongside companies as they market themselves amidst their competitors. As CEO, Swenk led his team to go

Since 2009, the company has been a leader in social media, web and mobile development, and innovative digital marketing. “We became more than just a web design company; we became a company that helped other companies grow and succeed,” Swenk said. “That’s been one of my primary motivators in all I do — helping others reach their own personal success.” “I always made it our end goal to help clients hit their own business goals,” he said, adding, “What we were able to do at Solar Velocity was incredibly fulfilling.” As they helped others grow, so did Solar Velocity. Their clientele grew to include multi-million dollar agencies like Aflac, Reebok and LegalZoom, to name a few.

Turning a New Page After 12 years leading Solar Velocity, Swenk made the decision to sell the company, opting to stay on board through the transition. Just nine months later, the company was sold again, and this time, Swenk made the difficult decision to step down from his position and formally part ways with the company he grew from the ground up. “When the company sold, I found myself at a point where I wasn’t sure what to do,” Swenk recalled.

It didn’t take long for him to discover many more opportunities awaited. After experiencing severe migraines for months, Swenk decided to change his eating habits in an attempt to find a cure — and it worked! Determined to share his path to a healthier lifestyle with others, Swenk designed and launched Goalvator, an app that allows users to share pictures of their meals with friends to increase accountability and healthy eating habits. Swenk also authored his fi rst book, “How to Design A Great Website & NOT Get Screwed,” an in-depth guide for developing and launching web projects. Recently, he took on a new position as Chief Innovations Officer for Payscape Advisors in Atlanta. Here, he manages the technology, innovation, marketing and product direction for the company’s clients. “My position at Payscape has allowed me to really share what I’ve learned in my own experiences. I walk them through some of what I did to be successful in the industry and go with them through the hurdles and challenges they might face.” No matter what the work, Swenk’s ultimate goal has remained contributing to the betterment of others and their dreams. “I love learning and sharing with others what I know,” Swenk said. “Any kind of service, technology or product I can develop or provide that helps people succeed, I want to do whatever I can to make that available. I love my work and I’m thankful to be working in a field I’m so passionate about.” Family Matters “When I heard about Untameable, I had to nominate Jason,” said his mother, Maryann Casella. “He has an intense passion and drive to succeed and help others in every aspect of his life. I am so inspired by his tenacity

And still, after all he does, he makes quality time with his wife and children a priority every day.” Swenk’s ability to balance family and work is certainly not lost on his wife, Kimberly, either. It’s her husband’s motivation to succeed that inspires her in her own life and work. “Jason really has an incessant drive that I have never seen in anyone else,” Kimberly explained. “It doesn’t matter what it is — work, family, training for a triathlon, writing a book — everything has to be at 110 percent. Seeing his drive motivates me to be more driven and ambitious in my own life.” In his free time, Swenk even passionately pursues personal hobbies, including racecar driving. “I picked it up right after college when I met a guy who had an old mustang that I thought was just the coolest thing. He taught me how to build a car from the ground up, and eventually, I just started racing them,” he said. “I’ve had the chance to race all over the country — eventually even win a championship. I’ve stepped back now that I have children, but I still hit the track every once in awhile for fun.” Swenk is excited by the thought of the future and all that could come for him. “I have a different outlook than I think most people do,” he said. “I am constantly looking at how people are already doing things and trying to think about how it could be done differently. There’s always a better way; we never have it completely figured out. As long as I’m alive, I will be asking questions, seeking answers, and thinking about new ideas. That’s what keeps me going!” PN

Fire Station 1 & Fire Museum ROSWELL Anne Frank In the World Exhibit SANDY SPRINGS THIS FREE MUSEUM is perfect for 3rd graders and up. The exhibit solidified what my kids had already learned in school, and offered a deeper understanding to Frank’s life and indomitable spirit. Program Director Sandra Craine started us out with a 28-minute film, a fantastic overview of the climate, culture and facts leading up to Frank’s fate. With that knowledge in place, the exhibit began by pushing open a swinging bookcase — a replica of the one which so cleverly concealed the family’s secret annex. The exhibit presents 600 amazing photographs, plus a recreation of Anne Frank’s hidden bedroom: chair, writing desk, wall posters. A room that could belong to any girl the world over. It’s a powerful tool.

IF YOU HAVE A LITTLE BOY obsessed with firemen, this outing is for him. The petite museum tucked inside the historic Wright Chevrolet building is easy to navigate. Vintage fire-fighting equipment, hats and old photographs tell the story. The star of the show is Roswell’s immaculate 1947 fire truck. It’s picture-perfect. Everything but the Dalmatian. We were shown the station by fireman Johnnie Martin. He let my kids feel, touch and sit in the modern-day trucks. “We can get someone out of a 7th-story window
