M

Welcome from the club officers

y sincere welcome to all our skippers, crews and guests participating in The Corinthians Ocean Race 2014. This will be our fourth event, and hopefully we will continue to grow. The race is designed to give skippers and crews the hands on experience of sailing offshore. Hopefully, our boats will go on to the Marion-Bermuda Race, The Marblehead-Halifax Race and The Newport Bermuda Race. Some of you have already participated in these races, and we thank you for taking part in our race. Our Qualification and Inspection Team has scrutinized our vessels and worked with skippers to insure that we have a safe and enjoyable race. Our Race Committee has designed the racecourse to comply with all existing rules and regulations and ensure a challenging race. Further, the collaborative effort of the Organizing Authority, which is composed of The Corinthians, Stonington Harbor Yacht Club and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, has worked diligently to make sure that the

T

he 2014 Corinthians Ocean Race continues to grow and rival other distance races on the East Coast. Those of you who raced with us in 2012 had great weather and solid competition, with dependable breezes and warm water. While we cannot guarantee weather conditions, we can guarantee a challenging race. The 328-nautical-mile course provides significant navigational challenges around Cape Cod and across the Gulf of Maine to Boothbay Harbor, where Maine hospitality offers a fitting finish to the distance race. The three sponsoring yacht clubs, including the dozens of volunteers, produce a high-caliber yacht race that provides an offshore experience that will race harden the skipper and crew for other offshore races while providing

pre-race and post-race activities and race support will make this a memorable experience for all. My thanks to the committee folks from all three clubs who have worked effortlessly to put together a program of social events we hope you will all enjoy. From its inception, this race is designed to be enjoyable and fun, with a start and a finish in very attractive and scenic locations that skippers, crews and guests will enjoy. Stonington Harbor is a very picturesque Harbor, and the village offers many restaurants, shops, museums and exhibits of interest for all who visit. The finish is in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, a beautiful setting offering a great venue to begin cruising in some of the most desirous cruising areas on the east coast. I hope you enjoy your race and take advantage of both Stonington, Connecticut and Boothbay Harbor, Maine and all they have to offer. And make sure you enjoy the Maine Lobsters! Jay Kiszkiel Operations Director

a first quality pre- and post-race experience. We wish to thank our sponsors and industry partners whose support makes races like this possible. Please support our advertisers as you require services. The commodores of Stonington Harbor Yacht Club and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, along with the Master of the Corinthians, have invested heavily in time and effort to make this race one of the high points of the 2014 racing season. If you have raced with us in past years, we look forward to seeing again in July. If you are joining us for the first time we look forward to introducing you to the Corinthians Ocean Race, aka The Lobster Run.” Sail Fast, Be Safe.

The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club flag officers, members and staff welcome the participants of the 2014 Corinthian Ocean Race. This race is a wonderful training opportunity for ocean racing. It is approximately onehalf of a Newport Bermuda Race. By doing the race, experience will be gained that will be invaluable in your future ocean Sailing. If this is your first race, welcome to ocean racing, or if this is one of many, I am sure that you will enjoy the time spent with the camaraderie of fellow crewmembers. If you are doing this race, a delivery, or participating in a longer race, the time spent on the water contributes to your overall experience in yachting. Awakening for the watch that enables one to see the sun rise in the Gulf of Maine, or the watch that gets to see the sunset, are experiences that are remembered for a lifetime. I well remember sunsets and sunrises on the way to Bermuda and the approach from the Gulf of Maine to Boothbay Harbor. As you approach Boothbay Harbor, you will see the Cuckolds Light and fog signal at night at a distance, or you may see the red sector from the Burnt Island Light. The weather gods are on notice to limit the fog for the

race. All of the lights, buoys and beacons you encounter signal an inviting harbor ahead. The coast of Maine, with all its islands and serenity, is dramatically represented by Boothbay Harbor. The Town has had very little change since it was the site of the shooting of the Movie Carousel in the 1950s. It symbolizes the hospitality of Maine. The Yacht club will extend all of its facilities to you and your crew. If you arrive in the middle of the night, there will be a welcoming to assist you to either a mooring or to tie to the dock. Many of the race organizers have participated in ocean racing, and realize the importance of getting the arriving race participant back to land. The club has the best restaurant in Boothbay, and will give you reciprocity for its use. If any of the crew desire a shower, the hot water will be on and ready for their arrival. If you arrive during the day, keep a keen watch for the Junior Program on the water in their new 420s with the BHYC club burgee on the spinnakers. Thank you for participating in the race. Also I want to thank all the volunteers and staffs from all three organizations that have made the race possible. Fair Winds and smooth Seas Lee H Krow Commodore, BHYC

The Corinthians Ocean Race, 2014

On behalf of the Flag Officers, members and staff of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, I bid a warm welcome to all 2014 Corinthians Ocean Race participants. The fourth running of The Corinthians Stonington-to-Boothbay Harbor Race finds SHYC in a state of vibrant growth. We have recently completed the purchase of six, previously leased Ideal 18s, and have added six Optimist prams to our club fleet. This allows us to offer a strong, junior sailing program to complement our highly successful racing program. Our sailing season stretches from spring frostbiting through fall frostbiting, and has our members involved in a variety of racing formats such as PHRF, one-design fleet racing, match racing, and team racing. Our cruising group has made the SHYC burgee a familiar sight in regional harbors, from Greenwich, Conn., to Northeast Harbor, Maine. Last year, we had three member boats enter the Marion-to-Bermuda race, with one of our boats capturing three trophies. SHYC is at the heart of the local boating scene, with over 300 members participating in a broad range of club-sponsored events and activities. As the only club in the area that is open year-round, our enthusiasm on the water extends to our social and marine-education events back in the clubhouse, as you will experience yourself at the welcome party ahead of the race. For those calling in our harbor for the first time, you’ve

doubtless already made note of Stonington’s enviable location as a protected and convenient harbor within a day’s sail of many delightful cruising destinations, such as Block Island, Newport and Shelter Island. While preparations for the event will no doubt occupy the competitors’ attention in the days leading to Friday’s start, we hope race participants will still take some time to enjoy our beautiful clubhouse, mingle with fellow boating enthusiasts from SHYC, and have a look around our historic borough. Even if race preparations prevent participants from exploring the area this week, we encourage you to return for a leisurely visit to enjoy the many local attractions, which range from Mystic Seaport, to the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Museum, to Connecticut’s two casinos, to several vineyards, to our local aquarium, and to the many historic buildings and sites that surround us. In fact, this August marks the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Stonington, during the War of 1812, and the Borough will mark the occasion with parades and re-enactments on Aug. 9 and 10. Finally, we extend a very warm “thank-you” to all of the Corinthian, BHYC and SHYC volunteers who have committed a vast amount of time to organizing, promoting, and running this premiere offshore yachting event. The results of your efforts speak for themselves, and it is a privilege to have SHYC associated with the fourth Biannual Corinthians Ocean Race. Good luck to all competitors! Stonington Harbor

About the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club

12

The Stonington Harbor Yacht Club was founded in 2002. The clubhouse is located in historic Stonington Borough, at the entrance to Stonington Harbor. We are year-round club with 285 members enjoying a wide variety of both water and land-based activities The mission of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club is to foster a spirit of excellence in boating activities, in our membership and the community. It continues to be the foundation of everything we do. Four core values define who we are as a club within our mission: Promote excellence: A drive for excellence sets the standard for all our endeavors on and off the water. Excellence in delivering value to our members every day is vital to our long-term success. Offer a full range of boating activities: Our club seeks to advance boating in the broadest definition possible. From around-the-buoys racing to offshore events, cruising, power boating, rowing or kayaking, SHYC members of all ages are strongly encouraged to get out on the water and participate. It is active shared participation in a

pastime we all enjoy that is the common bond that unites us. The club features a fleet of Ideal 18s and Optimists for recreational, instructional and competitive programs. Foster an inclusive spirit and a strong tie to the Community: SHYC recognizes the critical responsibility we have in adding value for our members, but we also have a commitment to benefit the community at large. Our ongoing educational programs and other forms of out reach ensure that SHYC is respected and supported by the community. Respect our marine environment: As active boaters, we do all we can to not only preserve, but also enhance, the waters that are so vital to our sport and community. We model this responsible attitude through all our programs and activities. The club is also as much dedicated to a rich social life for its members as it is to excellence in boating. Energetic and engaged members organize and participate in all kinds of events and activities off the water year-round. SHYC offers its members and guests extensive bar, restaurant and private event services in a beautiful clubhouse. We are proud to have hosted the Corinthians Ocean Race from its inception and look forward to another great race week this year.

Boothbay Harbor

About the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

16

The Boothbay Harbor YC was incorporated in 1895 by an act of the Maine Legislature. A hall was leased in Boothbay Harbor, and the club became an active racing and social center for the active summer colony, with many yacht clubs visiting. In 1938, the club voted to adopt 21-foot class sailboat, The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club One Design class designed by Geerd Hendel. Many of the originals are still sailing today, and the design is once again are being manufactured. In the 1990s, the J/22 was adopted as the clubs one-design racing class. The Junior Program was established in 1954, with students sailing in Turnabouts. When the inner harbor became too crowded for racing, the club leased the former Oak Grove Casino in West Boothbay Harbor, the site of the present club. The Junior program today sails both Optis and 420s. Increased activities at the club and within the inner harbor prompted the move to the present location. A new clubhouse was built in 1968 and enlarged in 1980. The tennis program was introduced in 1975 on adjacent courts built and owned by Past Commodore Georg Whitten. In 1993, the club bought the neighboring building, which houses the West Boothbay post office. In 2000, the club undertook a major renovation of the clubhouse. The flat roof was replaced with a pitched roof, and the interior was completely redesigned and renovated. The result is an attractive, well-designed facility that

provides excellent dining and boating services to the clubs 300 members and visitors. Launch service is offered throughout the season to an extensive mooring field. In 2002, the club acquired bordering property on West Harbor Pond that included a dwelling that was remodeled to house club staff. A property was acquired in 2011 adjacent to the club that will be used to house the Junior Program. The club maintains a prominent role in yacht racing, with a weekly series of J/22 and one-design races. In 1987, the Commodores Cup series of weekend races was initiated as a racing forum for cruising sailboats. Since 1974, the club has sponsored a Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association Regatta, a two-day event drawing boats from all over Maine. Since 2009, the Classic Boat Race series has been sailed for boats over 25 years of age. In 2013, the club hosted the Junior Olympics, and in both 2013 and 2014 the State of Maine Opti Championships. In 2008, the club became a sponsor, along with The Stonington (Conn.) Yacht Club and the Corinthians, of a biannual ocean race, The Corinthian’s Ocean Race (COR), the course for which is 332 nautical miles from Stonington, Conn., to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Members participate in a great variety of events at the club, from many special-interest groups, such as bridge to car shows, to several summer cruises. Activities stretch into the fall, with the dining room open through September. For more information about the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, visit www.bhyc.net. About The Corinthians Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race

H

MAINE

In 2008, The Corinthians Association conceived and executed the first Stonington (Conn.) to Boothbay Harbor (Maine) Race, a 326-nautical-mile sailboat race around Nantucket Shoal. The Corinthians enlisted the aid and support of The Stonington Harbor Yacht Club and The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club to facilitate the race. The race is a natural rounding out of the North Atlantic racing scene, with a race that is challenging for skippers and crews and provides an entry to the offshore sailing world. The race now is a collaborative effort, with the Organizing Authority consisting of all three clubs. The race is held every two years on the even years and will appeal to those competing in The Marion-Bermuda Race, Marblelhead-Halifax Race and Newport-Bermuda Race. It is an ideal race for those wishing to cruise to a “vacation destination” along the beautiful coast of

Maine. The race is designed to be very affordable since the start and finish are easily accessible for crew transfers. Sponsored by Point’s East Magazine and Gosling’s Rum, the event features an array of pre-race and post-race parties and dinners along with the opportunity to share camaraderie with the yachting community. Each yacht will carry a transponder which will allow spectators to “track” the progress of every yacht in the race through a link from the race website. The race is a US Sailing Ocean Race with ORR, PHRF spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes as well as a “double-handed” class. The starting line is set just east of Watch Hill Light, and the race finishes off McKown Point in Boothbay Harbor. The course is approximately 326 nautical miles.

A “virtual yacht club” with no clubhouse, but a focus on crewing and camaraderie;

“Each year the waters where I grew up sailing got visibly filthier and filthier. So I want to do everything I can to prevent that from happening to the water around here.” —Bob Snyder, Managing Member, Dodson Boatyard

Water quality testing is critical to understanding and improving the health of our local waters. “Sometimes, we can tell something is wrong with our water just by looking at it. Other times, we simply smell trouble. But most of the problems in our waters – caused by stressed septic systems, boat discharges, and surface runoff – are not that easily detected, “ says Fran Hoffman, President of CUSH. That is why since 2007, CUSH (Clean Up Sound and Harbors) volunteers have been collecting and testing water samples from Stonington and Mystic Harbors, Pequotsepos and Wequetequock Coves, and the streams that feed them. We share our monitoring results with Town and State agencies, environmental groups, and the public.

In addition to testing, CUSH works to help keep local waters healthy through our educational programs like Sound-Friendly Gardening, SoundFriendly Boating, and Coastal Cleanups. Soon we will release our 5-year long water quality analysis. We invite everyone interested in the health of our waters to visit our website, read the report, and find out what we can all do to improve water quality in Fishers Island Sound. Here’s Bob again: “I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it for the millionth and first. These waters are our best asset period. And when I say ‘our’ it’s Dodson Boatyard, it’s the fishing fleet, it’s the town, it’s the merchants, everything.” CUSH heartily agrees.
