MLX High Tech Line If high-tech lines are over the top in performance and out of reach in price, MLX is the “missing link” that allows the club racer or performance-oriented cruiser to upgrade their lines without breaking the bank. Innegra™-S, a high modulus polypropylene fiber, is used in Samson’s new MLX. Blending Innegra™-S with Dyneema® results in a rope that bridges the gap in performance characteristics and price between traditional fibers like polyester and the high performance of HMPE,LCP and aramid fibers.

XLS Extra Line Have you ever had a difficult time furling your jib when the breeze picked up? Many times, this is due to an old halyard that is stretching. This causes your jib to sag at the luff, and keeps the furler from spinning freely. XLS Extra is the perfect solution for replacing wire furling-jib halyards with lines that are stronger, lighter and more durable than all polyester double braids or wire, yet are lower cost than the high tech alternatives.

T

he Corinthians, a sailing association with a history going back more than three-quarters of a century, welcomes you to one of the East Coast’s premiere sailing events. If it weren’t for you active, competent sailors – we would have little reason to exist. Our organization is made up of people like you: You represent our history as well as our future. And we wish each of you, and every boat, fair winds and a safe and enjoyable race. We also offer our congratulations, whether finishing first or last. The fact that you are in this race, whether skipper or crew, sets you apart from most of the population; indeed, it places you apart from most sailors. This

race not something required of you. Nor is it an activity without serious demands of its own for time, treasure, skill, and judgment. Your taking the initiative and pains to be part of this event deserves our hearty congratulations. Take a moment to scan the list of people who actually make this race happen: the volunteers from The Corinthians, the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club and the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club. And then take another moment to thank them. The time and effort to make this race happen are prodigious, and most of the volunteers would rather be sailing with you than watching from a distance. So do give them the appreciation they deserve. Dick Woods, Master of The Afterguard

I’m pleased to report that we are a long way towards meeting our goals. This is, of course, not to say that we don’t continue to need your suggestions for improvement. The addition of Robin Wallace as Principal Race Officer (PRO), Jay Kiszkiel’s army of volunteers, the support of all three clubs, and great competitors – all promise our best effort to date. Thank you for joining us in this celebration of offshore racing.

W

elcome to the third running of the “Lobster Run.” From the beginning it’s been a wonderful partnership between The Corinthians, Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club to sponsor an event with clear goals: Start in a great spot; have a great party. Race a challenging offshore course. Conduct the race to the highest standard. End the race in a great spot; have a great party. Attract the large number of volunteers to pull it off. Make the event a winner for our sponsors.

Jay Kiszkiel

O

n behalf of the organizing committee, I welcome skippers and crew participating in The Corinthians Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race 2010, affectionately known to us as “The Lobster Run.” The committee has been working diligently since our inaugural 2008 race to make this, our second race, a successful event. We have designed this race for skippers to test their boats and crews for offshore racing. It is our hope that this race will encourage you to participate in other offshore events. For the seasoned offshore racers, this a great event to enjoy a race to the cruising grounds of coastal Maine. Further, the committee has gone to great lengths to make sure that the pre-race and post-race activities and support will make this a memorable experience for all. Thanks to our supporting clubs, the Stonington Harbor

Tom Lane Chairman, Organizing Committee Corinthian’s Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race

Yacht Club and the Boothbay Harbor Yacht club, activities and services are in place to make this an enjoyable event. From its inception, this race is designed not only to prepare and test your boats for offshore racing but also to provide a distance race with both a start and a finish in very attractive and scenic locations that skippers, crews and guests will enjoy. Stonington Harbor is a very picturesque anchorage and the town offers many restaurants, shops, museums and exhibits of interest for all who visit. The finish is in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, a beautiful setting offering a great venue to begin cruising in some of the most beautiful areas on the east coast. I hope you enjoy your race and take advantage of both Stonington, Connecticut and Boothbay Harbor, Maine and all they have to offer. And make sure you enjoy the Maine lobsters! Charlie Hatton Stonington Harbor

Welcome from the Commodores

D

ear Lobster Run competitors and volunteers, on behalf of the Flag Officers, members, and staff of Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, I bid a warm welcome to Lobster Run participants. The third running of The Corinthians Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race finds SHYC members in an especially celebratory mood since it coincides with SHYC’s 10th Anniversary Year. While preparations for the event will occupy the competitors’ attention leading to Friday’s start, we hope race participants will still take some time to enjoy our beautiful clubhouse, mingle with fellow boating enthusiasts from SHYC, and have a look around our historic borough.

Marianne Reynolds Boothbay Harbor

T

he 2010 Lobster Run took place when I was Rear Commodore, and I have been looking forward to presiding over the 2012 race ever since then. We hope to repeat the glorious weather and welcome even more competitors this year as the event continues to grow in popularity. BHYC has a rich history beginning in 1870. Over the years, our safe, beautiful and charming harbor has hosted countless numbers of steamships, fishing boats and yachts. Our racing tradition continues with the Boothbay Harbor One Design (1938) and J/22 racing series along with our regattas. We also have a very active and popular junior sailing and tennis program with community participation and Foundation scholarships.

For those calling in our harbor for the first time, you’ve doubtless already made note of Stonington’s enviable location as a protected and convenient harbor within a day’s sail of many delightful cruising destinations. Also apparent to visitors is the intensity of local interest in the marine environment and the pastime of boating. SHYC is at the heart of the local boating scene, with over 300 members participating in a broad range of club-sponsored events and activities. As the only year-round club in the area, the sailing season stretches from spring frostbiting to fall frostbiting, and members are involved in a variety of racing formats, such as PHRF, one-design fleet racing, match racing, and team racing. Our cruising group has made the SHYC burgee a familiar sight in regional harbors. The member fleet demonstrates the inclusiveness that is a SHYC hallmark: sailing and power yachts of all sizes,

Today, we offer all the amenities visitors need: moorings, launch service, showers, laundry facilities, and an excellent bar and restaurant. Our dedicated volunteers on the Lobster Run Committee have been planning for your arrival, and they will do their best to make your experience outstanding. In addition, our volunteer hostesses at the front desk will be happy to assist you with all of your requests. During your stay in the Boothbay region, please visit the world class Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and plan a hike on one of our Boothbay Region Land Trust preserves. Our local YMCA offers exceptional facilities and programs, and the Opera House entertainment is excellent. I wish you all fair winds as you sail to Boothbay Marianne C. Reynolds Commodore, BHYC

kayaks, day sailors, and numerous outboard and small fishing boats. We’ve just added a club fleet of Ideal 18s for use by all our members, with the object of reducing the cost and increasing the convenience of access to our cherished pastime. Our enthusiasm on the water extends to our social and marine-education events back in the clubhouse, as you will experience yourself at the welcome party ahead of the race. Thank you to all the Corinthian, BHYC and SHYC volunteers who have committed a vast amount of time to organizing, promoting and running this premiere offshore yachting event. The results of your efforts speak for themselves, and it is a privilege to have SHYC associated with the third Biannual Lobster Run. Good luck to all competitors, Charlie Hatton Commodore, SHYC

Stonington Harbor

About the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club

12

In the fall/winter of 2001/2002, a number of boating residents of Stonington began discussing the possibility of forming a new yacht club. After sending questionnaires to individuals with boats in Stonington Harbor, it was determined that sufficient interest existed to pursue the formation of a club. The result was the incorporation of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, Inc. in May 2002. After an open admissions period of six weeks, the club had attracted 174 Founding Members. This number grew to almost 300 by the end of 2003. The Club’s Certificate of Incorporation states in part that: “...the purpose of the Corporation is to: encourage and support the sport of yachting, the art of yacht design and building, the science of seamanship and navigation; and to help maintain the quality of the waters on which we boat.” Reflecting on these guidelines the Board of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club established the following Mission Statement for the Club: The mission of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club is to foster in our membership a spirit of excellence in boating activities. The three key word/phrases are: “membership,” which we want to be family oriented and diverse with a

demonstrated interest in boating; “excellence,” where we want to be recognized for our professionalism and integrity; and “boating activities,” where we will emphasize racing, cruising, safety and environmental responsibility. The club has established itself as a member of US Sailing and the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association and has established a Race Committee for club-sponsored events as well as for the Race Rock Regatta in 2003. The club sponsored a junior and adult sailing program that began in the Summer of 2003 that is available to members’ children and youth from the Stonington community. This junior program will initially involve instruction in Optimist prams, but will expand to other racing boats as demand dictates. Additionally, the club is attempting to place moorings in other harbors for use by our cruising members. During its initial season the club hosted a Commissioning Ceremony; several cruises, rendezvous and picnics; and several fall social events and sailors’ evenings during the winter months. While the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club was incorporated relatively recently, in May 2002, with 174 founding members, by 2004, SHYC already was recognized as one of the fastest growing, most active and most inclusive yacht clubs in New England.

Boothbay Harbor

About the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

16

The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club was incorporated in 1895 by act of the Maine Legislature following formative years dating back to 1870. A hall was leased in Boothbay Harbor, and the club became a racing and social center for the active summer colony, with many yacht clubs visiting. In 1938, the club voted to adopt a 21-foot class sailboat, the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club One Design class designed by Geerd Hendel. Many are still sailing and racing today, and One Designs are once again being manufactured. In The 1990s a class of J/22s was introduced. The Junior Sailing Program was established in 1954 with youngsters initially sailing in Turnabouts. The club has hosted many regional regattas, and turned out many accomplished sailors. When the inner harbor became too crowded for racing, the club leased the former Oak Grove Casino in West Boothbay Harbor, with the young sailors enjoying both Turnabouts and One Designs. The Junior Sailing program today uses Optis and 420s. Increased activities at the club, and within the inner harbor, prompted the move to the present West Harbor location. A new clubhouse was built adjoining the casino, which opened in 1968, and was enlarged in 1980. The tennis program was introduced in 1976 on adjacent courts built and owned by former Commodore George Whitten. In 1993, the club bought the courts and the neighboring building, which houses the West Boothbay Harbor Post Office.

In 2000, the club undertook a major renovation of the clubhouse: The flat roof was replaced with a pitched roof and the interior completely redesigned and renovated. The result is an attractive and well appointed facility that provides excellent boating and dining services to the club’s 300 members and visitors, with launch service throughout the season to an extensive mooring field. In 2002, the club acquired bordering property on West Harbor Pond that included a dwelling that was remodeled to house club staff. In 2011, the club acquired adjacent property on West Harbor that included a dwelling that will allow for future expansion of club activities. The club maintains a prominent role in yacht racing, with a series of weekly J/22 and One Design races with stiff competition. In 1987, the Commodore’s Cup series of weekend races were initiated as a racing forum for cruising sailboats, with large fleets participating. Since 1974, the club has sponsored a Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association Regatta, a two-day event drawing boats from all over Maine. In 2008, the club became a sponsor, together with The Corinthians and the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, of a biannual distance ocean race known as the Lobster Run, which courses 332 nautical miles from Stonington, Conn., around Nantucket Shoals, and finishes in Boothbay Harbor. Members also participate in a great variety of events at the club and in several summer cruises. The renovated clubhouse has extended the summer season, stretching activities through spring and into the fall. For more information about the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, visit www.bhyc.net. The Corinthians and the Lobster Run 20

About The Corinthians Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race The Corinthians – a sailing association with pride, prestige, and history Centered mainly along the northeast coast of the United States, The Corinthians is dedicated to bringing together good sailors and good boats, providing the highest-quality events and entertainment, and maintaining a long tradition of cruising and offshore racing and voyaging. •

Founded in in New York in 1934 by yachtsmen who saw the need for a way for amicable and experienced volunteer crew to connect with skippers

A “virtual yacht club” with no clubhouse, but a focus on crewing and camaraderie

Events and seminars from Annapolis to Maine, on subjects as diverse as diesel engines, around-theworld-voyages, and the art of sailing photography

The Annual Race/Cruise, a major event attended by up to 50 boats, with daily racing between ports, receptions, dining, and kids’ contests

A focus on encouraging youth sailing, highlighted by the inauguration in 2006 of The Carl A. Beck Memorial Award

As The Corinthians celebrated their 75th anniversary, the first major new ocean race in almost 30 years was launched: The Corinthians Stonington to Boothbay Harbor Race.

In 1979 the Annapolis to Bermuda race had its first start. Now, almost 30 years later, The Corinthians Association, in cooperation with the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club and the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, has created a natural rounding-out of the North Atlantic ocean racing scene with a new event that promises to be as enticing as its predecessors. To be held every two years, in even years, the race will appeal to those who also do the Marion-Bermuda Race, or wish to prepare for it, as well as yachts returning from the Newport Bermuda Race who wish to cruise in Maine in August. Billed as a race with a wonderful “vacation destination,” it’s also very convenient and inexpensive for crew transfer. Already being touted as the “Lobster Run,” the event features pre-race and post-race dinners and parties, complemented in 2008 by the race’s beverage sponsor, Gosling’s Rums. Each yacht carries a transponder that will allow position reporting which can be followed at yellowbricktracking.com. Online registration is available. The race will be a US Sailing sanctioned Category 2 event, with ORR, PHRF spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions, as well as double-handed and Swan classes. The start is off Stonington, Connecticut. Competitors round the Nantucket Shoals buoys and finish at Boothbay Harbor, Maine. The course length is 332 nautical miles. It is a “navigator’s race,” with a choice of passing to the north or south of Block Island, and a similar decision with regard to Squirrel Island near the finish.

Lobster Run 2012

“Where I grew up sailing, you could just about see the water get filthier and filthier and filthier. So I just want to do everything I can not to have that happen to the water around here, that’s all.” —Bob Snyder, Managing Member, Dodson Boatyard

CUSH—Clean Up Sound and Harbors— is the only non-profit environmental organization in Southeastern Connecticut with a mission to clean up and protect Fishers Island Sound and its coves, inlets, bays, rivers, and harbors. We’re working with Bob Snyder and Dodson Boatyard to install two large storm drain filters to trap and remove sediments and debris, grease, oil and other contaminants from storm water runoff, minimizing silting of the harbor and flooding in a low-lying area of town. CUSH is known for working effectively with others and getting things done. CUSH runs a highly regarded water quality-sampling program with a fleet of trained volunteers, in partnership with several universities and institutions. The group has been instrumental in collaborative projects with Save The Bay,

Clean The Bay, United Water Company, the towns of Stonington and Westerly RI, church groups, and the Cub Scouts, engaging in coastal cleanups; embankment planting; promoting clean boating practices (CUSH has developed and distributed 5,000 clean boating brochures); enhancing and expanding pump out services to boaters; and responding to queries and requests from individuals and groups with water quality concerns. Here’s Bob again: “I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it for the millionth and first. These waters are our best asset, period. And when I say ‘our’ it’s Dodson Boatyard, it’s the fishing fleet, it’s the town, it’s the merchants, everything.” CUSH heartily agrees.
