Chicago Polo represents a group of local public and private Chicagoland polo clubs that have built a partnership around promoting and growing the sport locally and internationally. t is with great privilege that I welcome you to experience the magic, pageantry, and thrill of world-class local and international polo during Oak Brook Polo Club’s 96th Season. Our tradition of Sunday polo has been one of incomparable fun and excitement, the likes of which you will certainly never forget. This season, the Oak Brook Polo Club will host nine Saturday and Sunday Polo matches on the legendary Prince of Wales field. Highlights will include the return of our popular Horses & Horsepower event and the Midwest’s premier polo tournament— the Chicago Polo Cup. Our International Polo Series will showcase three match-ups featuring teams from Mexico, Jamaica, and Great Britain competing for our most revered trophies, including the Drake Challenge Cup and the coveted Butler International Cup. The British team, captained by Prince Charles, last played in Oak Brook in 1986, in front of 20,000 spectators. Oak Brook Polo has a long and storied history of hosting teams and players from across the globe—from India to Mexico, and Argentina to Canada.
I am also excited to welcome members of the U.S. and world polo communities to the USPA 2018 Board of Governors and Annual Member Meetings held here in Oak Brook. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the last U.S. Open Polo Championship held at Oak Brook. To celebrate, we will also host the first ever U.S. Open Polo Alumni Match, featuring current and former Open players. I am honored to act as a steward for the traditions that make Oak Brook Polo Club so unique in the world, and to champion the resurgence of our city as an international polo hub. A BRIEF HISTORY
Polo originated in Persia sometime between the sixth and first century BC as part sport and part training for war, with cavalry “teams” growing to up to 100 players per side. The game eventually spread to Constantinople, Tibet, China, Japan, and India. Polo started its move west when British officers learned the sport of kings in India. It hit England in 1869 and traveled to the United States in 1876, when the father of U.S. polo, James Gordon Bennett brought the sport to New York. Polo surfaced in Chicago in 1879 and flourished throughout the 20th century, becoming the hub of both U.S. and international polo cirucuits.
THE BASICS
There are two types of polo: outdoor polo and indoor (or arena) polo. An outdoor polo match is played on a 300 x 160 yard (9-acre) field—approximately the size of nine football fields. The arena field is smaller, 300 x 100 feet, and the game is played with a ball similar to a mini soccer ball, as opposed to the smaller hard plastic ball used for outdoors. Arena polo teams have three players, and because of the smaller scale of the arena field, each player usually fields only two horses per match. The beauty of arena polo is that is can be played all year round. A polo game begins at center field when the umpire throws the ball into play, similar to a puck dropped in hockey. Each game is divided into 7-1/2-minute periods called chukkers. A low or medium goal game has four chukkers and a high-goal game has six. At 7 minutes, a bell rings to warn the players of the end of the chukker. The second bell rings 30 seconds later to stop play.
In polo, the term “goal” can refer to several things. First, there is the kind of goal that indicates that a point is scored. A point is scored when a player hits the ball between the two goal posts, placed 8 yards apart, at any height. The second kind of “goal” refers to a player’s handicap rating. These “goal ratings,” based on experience and skill on the field, determine the make-up of teams, so that teams in tournaments are well-matched in terms of skill. The United States Polo Association assigns players a goal rating between -2 (for beginners) and 10 (reserved for only the top-rated professionals), and reviews these handicaps each year. In a match, opposing teams are equally matched by adding up the rating numbers of each of their players. For example, a team competing in a 6-goal tournament must have a total handicap of 6 when the goal ratings of all four players on the team are added up. Polo is the only professional sport in which men and women are rated on the same handicap scale and compete regularly both against and with each other on the same teams.
PONIES
American polo ponies are thoroughbreds or part thoroughbred and part quarter horse. It takes 2–3 years to train a green pony, and their polo careers can last over 15 years. For player and pony safety, their tails are braided and their manes are roached (clipped) for game play. Polo ponies work really hard on the field, so most polo players play a different pony in each chukker. Players are allowed to remount at any time during a match, similar to hockey players changing lines.

THE RULES
Right of way/line of the ball: Once a ball is hit, its trajectory establishes the line of the ball. The player closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the “right of way.”
Crossing: If a player crosses the line of the ball close enough that it is dangerous or approaches the player with the right of way at too sharp an angle, the umpire will call a foul and subsequent penalty shot against their team.
If a player comes from behind and passes a player with the right of way, they may not cross the line of the ball if it will create a dangerous situation.
Players can receive a foul if they approach their opponent’s pony at an unsafe angle or if they are too far ahead of the player’s pony in their approach.

Ride-off: The objective of a ride-off is to prevent an opposing player from taking a shot or to drive the player off the “line of the ball” by pressing the shoulder of one pony into another. If a ride-off causes a pony to stagger, a penalty will be called.
Hooking: A player can hook another player’s mallet to prevent them from hitting if they are on the same side as the ball or directly behind the opposing player. The player may not reach over, under or across any part of the opposing player’s pony. When hooking, the stick must be lower than shoulder height.

THE CLUBS
Chicago Polo is an established network of 12 polo facilities and six USPA member polo clubs that have formed a strong community to support the growth and sustainability of polo in the metropolitan Chicagoland. Arranmore Farm + Polo Club, Barrington Hills Polo Club and Oak Brook Polo Club serve as the three clubs that welcome spectators to weekly or select scheduled events during the season, while others offer a venue for safe and competitive tournament and league polo for the community’s 130+ players and students.
A R R A N M O R E FA R M + P O L O C L U B LOCATION: Oswego, IL Arranmore Farm & Polo Club is situated on 300 acres of family-owned and operated land on the edge of suburban Chicago. It is home to some of the most pristine fields in the United States. Located 40 minutes from downtown Chicago, Arranmore Farm & Polo Club has held private polo matches since 1999 and opened its gates for the club’s first public polo matches in 2015. Its summer calendar also includes a series of outdoor music concerts, festivals, and charity events. Along with two world-class polo fields, Arranmore is a working polo farm including six stables, large pastures, a clubhouse, and a historic farmhouse.
B L AC K B E R RY P O LO C LU B LOCATION: Batavia, IL Blackberry Polo Club was organized on George and Barb Alexander’s Lake Run Farm in Batavia in 1986 as a venue for recreational polo. Practice sessions and matches with visiting teams, followed by a gathering under the trees with a nearby smoking grill and cold keg are the Blackberry tradition. The club also hosts a National Youth Series tournament and a Polo Training Foundation Seniors’ Tournament each summer season.

D U E W E ST P O LO LOCATION: Oswego, IL Due West was established in 2002 by Clifton Yandale. The 35-acre farm’s polo field serves as a practice field for players in the area. People from the Chicago Polo community assemble at Due West on Tuesdays for casual chukkers to get some time in on the field and to socialize with others in the polo community. Friends and family dot the hill overlooking the field and players will often stay after the game to grill and take in the incredible sunset before heading home.
F O N T FA M I LY FA R M LOCATION: Plano, IL Established in 2008, the club is a family joint venture with the purpose of learning, improving, playing polo, and providing the community with riding, horsemanship and stabling opportunities. The facility includes an outdoor polo field, one outdoor arena, an indoor polo arena, 40 horse stalls, and turnout paddocks. GO P O LO LOCATION: Naperville, IL From April until October, Windridge Farm is the summer home of GOPOLO. Polo pro Matias Obregon and certified Polo Instructor Juan Martin Gutierrez run the GOPOLO polo school catering to new and up-and-coming players. GOPOLO offers group lessons, private lessons, horses for lease, and everything you need as a new player. GOPOLO hosts club-level 4-chukker tournaments for the -2 to 1-goal players throughout the summer. When you are ready to step up, GOPOLO can find the right polo pony for you.
M O R G A N C R E E K P O LO LOCATION: Yorkville, IL Morgan Creek Polo Club was founded in 1995 by Angelo and Dean Kleronomos. Its polo history includes Laurel Team Polo and Maple Lane Polo Club dating back to 1980. The 200-acre horse farm in rural Oswego, Illinois, has two polo fields, an indoor arena, clubhouse, player and groom apartments, 40 stalls, 10 large turnouts, and a galloping track. Morgan Creek teams have participated in 8–22 goal polo in Wellington, Aiken, Oak Brook, and Chicago. Angelo and Dean have played internationally in Canada, France, Germany, and Argentina.
OA K B R O O K P O LO C LU B LOCATION: Oak Brook, IL Founded in 1922 by legendary businessman, Paul Butler, the Oak Brook Polo Club is one of the oldest polo clubs in the United States. It was once the sport’s epicenter for elite professional polo and, among other prestigious international and national polo tournaments, hosted the U.S. Open Polo Championship for 24 straight seasons. For decades, the club’s popular Sunday tradition and social scene has entertained Hollywood celebrities, dignitaries, royalty, and Chicago’s distinguished. Located 17 miles straight west from Chicago’s Loop, the club is home to Chicago’s Polo Team, which is captained by Chicago business leader, James Drury. The team has six U.S. Open Polo Championship titles and once fielded the Michael Jordan of polo and hall of famer, Cecil Smith.
PA S S I O N F O R P O L O LOCATION: Barrington Hills, IL Frauke and Jan-Dirk Lueders caught the polo bug in 2013. They eagerly sought out a place to develop their skills and their string of ponies and purchased what is now the Passion for Polo farm in 2013. Since they acquired their property, their polo string has grown from 4 to 17, and they have completed construction on
the only regulation-size indoor polo arena in the Midwest. They have also developed a full-size outdoor field adjacent to the arena, where they host friends, tournaments, and develop their Passion for Polo team.
P RA I R I E P O LO S C H O O L LOCATION: Wauconda, IL The Prairie Polo School was founded in 2014 to provide a regional platform to lease trained ponies, get year-round lessons, and play in organized and affordable step-up leagues. The club also hosts Corporate Polo events for team building. Prairie Polo is owned and managed by Nadir Khan, who is a USPA-certified Polo Instructor with over 14 years of experience with polo, training horses, mentoring new players, and giving lessons. We offer a year-round lease program and lessons to players at all clubs. The club boasts a state-of-the-art grass polo facility, a regulation outdoor arena, and an indoor regulation arena during the winter months. Prairie Polo Lessees and students can enjoy polo action every week of the year!
W I N D R I D G E FA R M LOCATION: Bolingbrook, IL Located 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, Windridge Farm is an equestrian hunter jumper facility with polo benefits. The facility has two indoor arenas, two outdoor arenas, and one polo field on the 60-acre property supporting both the equestrian and polo programs. he first Chicago Polo Club had a fledgling start in 1879, when four players showed up on October 18 to introduce the city to the game. A local newspaper described it thusly: “The ‘Club’ met yesterday afternoon to the number of four. The four in the middle of the open space provided for them looked as small as flies in a large barrel of molasses, and about as helpless. Society is grateful to them for the introduction of this favorite pastime of the upper ten.” That incarnation of the Chicago Polo Club popped up here and there in the 1880s, most notably in 1893, during the World’s Fair, when James Carey Evans and Capt. Francis Michler organized a Chicago Polo Club match on the lawns of a house in Brookline, near Chicago. The following year, a formal club started in Washington Park with 16 players. Organized outdoor polo matches started outside the city around 1897, when two clubs formed at Evanston Country Club and Onwentsia Club. Owentsia, a private club, hosted polo matches on its properties for over 100 years. Smaller clubs in Chicago such as Speedway, Whip and Spur, the Spur and Saddle Club, Dupage County Polo and Hunt Club, and Overbrook Polo Club opened up in the decade between 1915 and 1925. In 1920, the long-standing North Shore Polo and Hunt Club started hosting matches. Oak Brook Polo Club was established in 1924 in Hinsdale (what would in 1968 be established as the Village of Oak Brook), and grew to be not only the largest club in the Midwest, but by the 1950s, one of the largest clubs in the world.
Various indoor arena venues have come and gone in Chicago, largely owing to the military polo tradition in the area. Indoor polo was played at the Chicago Riding Club, Dexter Park, Plush Horse Stables, Parkwat Stables, and, most notably, in the 124th Field Artillery building, which is now known as the Chicago Avenue Armory. The 1930s and 40s saw just a few clubs hanging on through the Depression and World War II. One of Chicagoland polo’s historical highlights took place at Onwenstia in 1933 when the East–West tournament (pitting the best teams from the West against their rivals in the East) drew an astounding 15,000 spectators. The teams from the West (Texas and California) proved their mettle, taking two out of three games. The real heyday of growth for Chicagoland polo came in the three decades after the war. In 1954, the USPA relocated both its offices and the U.S. Open to the fields of Oak Brook Polo Club for a 24-year period, and polo thrived in the surrounding areas, with polo fields in Evanston, Wadsworth, McCook, Peoria, Rockford, Barrington, and Naperville. The 1980s saw the advent of the first all-women’s polo club in the United States: the Naperville Women’s Polo Club, and many smaller clubs that opened in the 1980s had staying power throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Blackberry, Naperville, Lakewood Acres, and Fox Meadow Farm. Chicagoland was a hub of international polo, with visiting teams from India, Mexico, New Zealand, Argentina, Italy, Cuba, and Great Britain. Oak Brook alone drew royal polo 39

fans and players such as King Hussein of Jordan, the Maharaja and Maharani of Jaipur, and notably, Prince Charles himself, who brought his Windsor team to play their first official game in the United States on our fields in 1986 to a crowd of thousands. The new millennium has brought a renewed interest in building up the sport of kings in Chicagoland through the network of clubs under the umbrella of Chicago Polo. Oak Brook Polo Club and Arranmore Farm & Polo Club maintain large venues with weekly matches throughout the season that are open to the public (see page 21 for the schedule). Oak Brook 42
continues to focus on drawing international teams to compete on their fields each season, this year welcoming Mexico, Great Britain, and Jamaica for their international series. Arranmore hosts two major weekend tournaments and weekly Wine Down Wednesday polo matches. Smaller private fields such as Blackberry, Barrington Hills, Due West, Morgan Creek, Passion for Polo, and Go Polo/Windridge Farm hold casual chukkers for local players and serve the community as training fields and a great place to play and relax with their fellow players.

I got MVP on that field, and as an amateur and a woman playing among these players who have been playing all of their lives, it felt amazing because I got to share that with the people who helped me get there. Why polo: Polo really is the gateway to the world. Anywhere you are in the world, you can just go to a club say “I want a lesson”—and you instantly have 50 new friends. A N G E LO K L E R O N O M O S Favourite polo memory: In 2007 I went to the Argentine Open with my son Dean and friend Bill Read. We spent a week watching the Open matches, playing polo, and trying horses at the ranches outside Buenos Aires. Why polo: Polo is the greatest getaway there is. You leave everything at the picket line and think about nothing but your horse, your opponent, and the game. It can become an addiction and a lifestyle. Why Chicagoland: An incredible history started by Paul Butler including high- and medium-goal matches, the U.S. Open, international matches, and charity events, drawing players and celebrities from all over the world. It has been a privilege to be a part of it for the past 38 years.

MARIANO GUTIERREZ Favourite polo memory: Growing up playing polo bareback at the ranch with my brothers, cousins and my dad. We were all day long on a horse! Why polo: Polo is the only sport where you are on a team made of human beings and animals, so you create a bond with your teammates, your horses and their horses. Everything happens fast on the field so you have a lot of adrenaline, but you also need a lot of technique to ride and to hit that little ball. You need to be smart to understand the game and strong because it is a very physical sport. You have everything in one sport. Why Chicagoland: Polo has a lot of history here, and Jim Drury is 52
doing a lot to support the sport at Oak Brook. The polo community is working hard to grow polo in the area. And for me, I have great fun playing on a team with Jim, Horacio and Toto.
H O R AC I O O N E T TO Favourite polo memory: Playing with my father when I first started playing as a boy in Argentina Why polo: I love everything about it—the horses, the adrenaline, the competition—everything! Why Chicagoland: I started playing here when I was very young, so it is like home to me.
TOMAS OBREGON Favourite polo memory: Winning the Governor’s Cup with my twin brother Matias in 2008. Why polo: You get to travel so much and everyone you meet in polo is so welcoming. Why Chicagoland: There are so many different people that come to play polo. You get to meet people from everywhere. It’s like a whole new world. We always have fun in Chicago.
JAMES J. DRURY Favourite polo memory: Playing my best polo ponies ever, Lucy and Apache, in 12and 16-goal polo matches. What a privilege that was. We lost Apache a couple of years ago. And Lucy is now retired and living the good life on our farm. Why polo: It is the only high-energy team sport that you can play for a lifetime. If you’re playing because you love the game for the long term—welcome. If you’re playing the game primarily for the personal “glory”—it won’t last. Why Chicagoland: Its international history as a polo town. Oak Brook was among the best polo clubs on the planet from 1954–1979, when it hosted the U.S. Polo Championship matches, longer than any other club in history. Since then and today, a number of Chicago polo clubs remain highly active under the ownership of our most experienced players, offering lessons for beginners who seriously want to learn the game. 53

T
he U.S Open is the most prestigious 26-goal tournament in the United States, and one of American polo’s longest traditions. Internationally, the match stands with the Argentine Open and the British Open as the three largest polo tournaments each season. Domestically, the tournament holds a spot in the U.S. Triple Crown, alongside the C.V. Whitney Cup and the USPA Piaget Gold Cup. The inaugural U.S. Open match, held in 1904 in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, hosted only two teams; by 1910, the match had grown to six teams and was hosted at Narragansett Pier, Rhode Island. In 1920, the U.S. Open began its 21-year residency at Meadow Brook Polo Club in Westerbury, New York. Progress, however, waits for no man, and in
the great New York infrastructure expansion of the 1950s, Meadow Brook, the country’s oldest polo club, was paved over to make way for the Meadowbrook Parkway. Luckily for the USPA, just outside of Chicago, a polo club that had established itself as an international polo hub extended a welcoming hand. POLO HEADS WEST In 1898, rancher and paper magnate J.W. Butler was already playing polo on his property in Hinsdale, and offered stabling on his property for other players. In 1921, his son, Paul Butler, set his sights on developing a large-scale polo property. Paul’s son, Michael Butler, recalls, “We had about 60 farms within this land, so dad began turning the farmhouses into rental 71
properties and getting his polo friends to move out there.” In fact, Paul Butler was so passionate about his vision for the polo property that he sold his family’s paper company (the oldest family-owned business in Chicago at the time) and the family ranches so he could focus on developing Oak Brook. On October 24, 1924, Oak Brook Polo Club was chartered by Paul Butler, Gene Gordon Culver and J.W Butler. Paul oversaw development of the club, initially developing six fields, built at different elevations in order to provide playable fields no matter what the weather, and stabling for 160 ponies. By the time Meadow Brook was forced to close in the 1950s, Paul Butler had grown Oak Brook into the biggest club in the United States. Michael recalls his father answering the call when the USPA was looking for a new venue. “They approached Dad, and he said yes, so the Open moved to Oak Brook. The polo club expanded quite a bit and wound up with 13 polo grounds and stabling for 400 horses. Oak Brook, at that time, was the largest polo club in the world. It was bigger than Argentina, bigger than any club in England, in terms of the fields and in terms of the high level of competition. [Moving the Open there] was a tremendous benefit to polo, because instead of people having to travel the entire length of the country, from California to New York, they could come to Chicago. It became much easier for the teams to get there every year for the main championship. People came from all over the world just to see it.” The first U.S. Open held at Oak Brook Polo Club was in 1955 and hosted four teams. In its tenure at Oak Brook, until 1978, the tournament was held elsewhere only twice: Santa Barbara in 1966 and 73
Memphis in 1968. Michael Butler remembers when the tournament first arrived in Oak Brook: “At the time the U.S. Open came to Oak Brook, I was 26. Dad asked if I wanted to play and I was put on a team with him, [legendary 10-goal player] Cecil Smith, and Jackie Murphy, who was about my best friend at the time. I was so excited I couldn’t see straight.” The tournament grew as polo gained steam in the post-WWII economy. Over the years, the tournament hosted teams from New York, Texas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Michigan, South Carolina, 74
California, and Florida, and twice hosted teams from Mexico. Some of the world’s best players graced Oak Brook’s field in those tournaments, including Cecil Smith, Robert Skene, Carlton Beal, W. Ray Harrington, Roy M. Barry, Bob Uihlein Jr, Harold “Joe” Barry, Dell Carroll, Billy Linfoot, Tommy Wayman, and Memo Gracida. Recognizing how central the club had become to the sport of kings in the United States, the USPA also moved its offices to Oak Brook, where it stayed until 1986.
A LASTI N G LEGACY “The U.S. Open was great, great fun,” recalls Michael. “The ceremonies, the horses, all the activities going on. We used to have tremendous parties. I have to hand it to my father, because he financed it until later on when it could stand on its own two feet.” The Oak Brook polo team won the national title six times while the tournament was played at its home club: in 1960, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1971 and 1973. By 1968, Michael Butler saw his father focusing more on golf, and anticipated what the future of Oak Brook could be. “I realized that golf was beginning to make heavy in-roads, because my father was not playing polo much anymore, he was playing golf. So, I made a proposal to him. I wanted to concentrate on the upper fields, which would give us about 4–6 grounds we could keep, and keep the Open there forever. I had realized that having the Open there was a lifestyle that everyone was really enjoying. My father said no. I knew he was thinking of increasing the golf.” In 1977, Paul Butler announced that he would be selling a large part of his property to the Village of Oak Brook. By 1978, the tournament had been built up to also include two handicap tournaments, for the Butler National Handicap and the A&K Trophy. The USPA knew that this was the beginning of a new era of independence for the tournament, which would have to find a new home and begin a drive for corporate sponsorship. “The Open left because we had developed so many of the fields, a lot of it going to golf,” recounts the prescient Michael. “The problem is that they built golf bunkers on one of the best polo fields in the world.”
The legacy of the U.S Open lives on in today’s Oak Brook Polo season. The club continues to focus on its ambassadorship to the world, hosting international tournaments with Great Britain, Mexico and Jamaica this season. The Butlers remain a strong part of the Oak Brook Polo Club community, with Michael Butler representing the family on the board as Honorary Chairman. Also maintaining a close relationship with the Club is Paul’s daughter, Jorie Butler Kent, the first female polo player inducted into the U.S. Polo Association, and her daughter, Reute Butler, who also played the game. Our club is pleased to continue to host the annual charitable event for the Butler’s 36-year young philanthropic organization focused on conservation efforts in Africa, Friends of Conservation. Two tournaments carry the Butler name today, to honor their place in U.S. polo history: the Butler International Cup and the Butler Challenge Cup. The Oak Brook Polo Club hosted the U.S. Open tournament from 1955-1978, longer than any other club in its history. We look forward to sustaining the health and prosperity of this extraordinary sport for many years to come. We are honored to host this year’s USPA Board of Governors and Annual Meeting during September, in commemoration of the 96th anniversary of the Oak Brook Polo Club.” 75

CHICAGO POLO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE: POLO, YOUR NEXT GREAT SPORT
I
n partnership with the United States Polo Association (USPA), the Chicago Polo community is searching for the next generation of polo players! We are excited to offer interested students from grades 5–12, ages 10–18, the opportunity to learn and play competitive polo with their peers. This unique opportunity will give students exposure to horses and the necessary education and skills to learn the sport of polo in a safe and fun environment. Students are invited to attend a series of workshops designed to introduce interested players and parents to the sport through classroom instruction, demonstrations, and basic horsemanship and polo training taught by local professionals and instructors. Upon completion and level of interest, students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of USPA and Chicago Polo youth development programs and compete on a circuit and the national level against other players from surrounding states.

To celebrate, Oak Brook Polo will host a “polo weekend” beginning with the USPA Board of Governors Match, a round-robin tournament featuring today’s polo leaders and legendary players in the United States. The Oak Brook Polo Club and USPA will host an exhibition match between current players and some of history’s legendary U.S. Open Polo Championship players.
