Atlantic Coast Cognac Country Poitou-Charentes

France conjures up many different images from historic towns and postcard-pretty villages to spectacular coastline and rolling vineyards, not to mention a lifestyle that’s the envy of the world. This is a country where people take pride in their roots, where family life is highly prized, and where everything still stops for lunch.

Take a holiday in Poitou-Charentes and you can enjoy the very best of France in one compact region that’s easily reached by train or road from Paris. Poitou-Charentes stretches inland from the Atlantic Coast, an area of lush, green countryside that includes the rolling vineyards of Cognac Country. Accessible to all, it offers long hours of sunshine without extremes of temperature. The region boasts some of the country’s bestloved destinations including La Rochelle with its photogenic Old Harbour and modern marina  ; the tranquil beaches and cycle tracks of Ile de Ré ; and the shady waterways of the Marais Poitevin, France’s very own ‘Green Venice’. Sample the buzz of the regional capital, Poitiers, with its glorious

heritage buildings and vibrant café culture, and tour the distilleries of Cognac Country – just north of Bordeaux - to discover the ageold secrets behind one of the world’s most iconic drinks. Ancient traditions blend seamlessly here with contemporary culture, and the natural environment sits harmoniously beside urban communities dating back to the Romans. Above all, Poitou-Charentes is a region where you’ll find a warm welcome and many historic ties to the Americas. In the 17th century, navigators sailed the Atlantic from harbours here in search of new lands and new species. Today those links are still warmly celebrated. But don’t just take our word for it - come and see for yourself. You’ll be very welcome …

Cognac

Cognac country Birthplace of a legend Whenever you pick up a glass of cognac, you’re treating yourself to one of the world’s most iconic and best-loved drinks. This famous spirit is only produced in a strictly controlled area surrounding the town of Cognac, a historic river port on the banks of the Charente. First produced in the 17 th century with the introduction of double distillation, cognac is now a global industry based on a small town that seems to ooze the amber nectar through every stone. Whatever your level of interest, there are visits and excursions in Cognac to suit everyone. Discover the history and tradition associated with the six growing areas or crus at the Musée des Arts du Cognac ; find out about the wider vineyard area in the Espace Découverte en Pays du Cognac ; and take a tour of the warehouses and production facilities belonging to one of the big brand names like Martell, Hennessy, Camus, Remy Martin, Otard, or Meukow. Take a leisurely cruise along the river to nearby Jarnac to visit other famous producers such as Courvoisier and Hine. Or take a tour of the Cognac Trails, five themed routes that link winegrowers and craftsmen, hoteliers and activity producers, all passionate about promoting their area. The country roads wind through the vineyards and beside the river, taking in idyllic stone villages and ancient farms in a landscape that has changed little across the centuries.

Saintes centuries of history Cruise west from Cognac between the shady banks of the Charente and eventually you glide into Saintes, built by the Romans in the 1st century AD and once the powerful Gallo-Roman capital of Aquitaine. Two thousand years later, Saintes still boasts a spectacular amphitheatre, once capable of seating the town’s 15,000 inhabitants, as well as the richly carved Germanicus Arch overlooking the river. For centuries, Saintes buzzed with commercial river traffic, the traditional wooden boats or gabares laden with barrels of wine and local produce. Today, the town is a starting point for cruises as well as a popular stopover for self-drive craft. Visit the Priory of SaintEutrope with its crypt hewn from solid rock, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the pilgrims’ trail to Santiago de Compostela, and soak up architecture ranging from Romanesque to Medieval, Renaissance to 21st century.

La Rochelle

La Rochelle

La Rochelle

Historic Atlantic Port Principal port of the Poitou-Charentes region, La Rochelle boasts more than its fair share of visitor attractions. Focal point for tourists and locals alike is the picturesque Vieux Port or Old Harbour, one of the most photographed ports on the Atlantic coast with its solid twin towers guarding the harbour entrance. A third tower along the ramparts served as both lighthouse and prison. Chill out at a quayside café to soak up the atmosphere of sea and sailing, especially magical after dark when lights shimmer across the water. On summer evenings, the quays are closed to traffic and street entertainers move in. Trade boomed here in the 17  th and 18th centuries as links were forged with Canada and the West Indies. Today, imposing private mansions still overlook the harbour and line the atmospheric streets of the old town. Pass beneath the great clock tower to discover arcaded streets lined with retail temptations, and grand public buildings such as La Bourse (the Stock Exchange), the Renaissance Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall), and the galleried mansion of the Maison Henri II. And discover museum collections ranging from Protestant history to perfume bottles, automated figures to La Rochelle’s historic links with the New World, as well as contemporary attractions such as the Aquarium, the floating Maritime Museum, and the huge pleasure boat marina of Les Minimes.

Ile de Ré

Ile de Ré

Ile de Ré

the White Island Easily reached by a sweeping toll bridge from La Rochelle, Ile de Ré is known as The White Island for its attractive whitewashed houses and the salt marshes that fringe the north-west coast. Home to some 16,000 permanent residents, its numbers swell in the summer months as holidaymakers come to enjoy the sandy beaches and sparkling waters, historic villages and tempting restaurants. Ile de Ré measures 30 km in length but is just 5 km across at the widest point. With the highest point just 19 m above sea level, bikes are the favourite mode of transport and you’ll find more than 100 km of marked trails winding through vineyards and forests, salt marshes and oyster beds - a healthy activity for all to enjoy. Two of the island’s ten villages have been classified amongst the elite band of Plus Beaux Villages de France, the old salt port of Ars-en-Ré with its black church spire and La Flotte with its pretty harbour and bustling covered produce market. Largest village is St-Martin-de-Ré which boasts towering ramparts and a harbour fortified by Louis XIV’s prolific military engineer, Vauban. Watch out on the ramparts for Les Anes en Culottes, the island’s famous Donkeys in Trousers – a reminder of the days when donkeys worked the salt pans, their legs protected by striped trousers, one pair in front and one behind.

Royan Strategically placed at the mouth of the mighty Gironde estuary, Royan has been a favourite holiday spot since 1875. Wealthy tourists arrived by train from Paris and Bordeaux and ‘Belle Epoque’ villas soon sprang up along the shoreline. Many of these elegant properties were lost in the bombing raids of 1945, but in the 1950s, Royan was dramatically rebuilt to showcase the very latest in town planning and urban construction. More than half a century later, it’s a beguiling mix of flamboyant 19th century buildings and post-war minimalist design, the largest resort on the Atlantic coast between La Baule and Biarritz. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is the emphasis on providing high quality facilities for every kind of holidaymaker. Whether you want to have fun on the sands with the children or get active over a round of golf, try your luck at the casino or spend a day out on the water, Royan can offer it, with the added bonus of 2,600 hours of sunshine a year. Take a self-guided audio-tour to discover the different styles of architecture including the extraordinary concrete church in the shape of a ship; visit the colourful food stalls beneath the dome of the covered market; or take a cruise along the Gironde to the Cordouan lighthouse, France’s oldest lighthouse. With five sandy bays – most of them south-facing - Royan can justly claim to provide a beach to suit everybody, all in the heart of the town.

Marais Poitevin

Marais Poitevin Marais Poitevin

The Green Venice Imagine a magical landscape of shady cattle meadows bisected by tranquil waterways ; a landscape of pretty villages where bikes and boats are traditional forms of transport and where local people work to the rhythm of the seasons. Welcome to the Marais Poitevin or ‘Green Venice’, a protected natural area classified Grand Site de France. Less than an hour’s drive north of La Rochelle, the Marais Poitevin is France’s second largest area of wetland after the Camargue, a landscape that exists thanks to a network of drainage channels first dug by medieval monks. Today it’s a place to get close to nature, step down a gear, and enjoy a unique protected environment. The fens stretch inland from the Baie de l’Aiguillon on the Atlantic Coast along the Sèvre-Niortaise river to the heritage town of Niort and include areas of wide-open cereal fields, drained by a system of sluice gates. But it’s the shady Marais Mouillée or Wet Marsh that presents the iconic face of the Marais Poitevin and there’s no better way to explore than in a traditional flat-bottomed boat or barque.

Step back in time and enter a different world by following the Sèvre Niortaise river to Niort, county town of the Deux-Sèvres department and gateway to ‘Green Venice’. Stroll through the historic heart of the medieval town between Place de la Brèche, the covered market, river and castle keep, lasting witnesses to the vibrant commercial and artistic life of this old market square.

Poitiers

Historic town with a contemporary edge Regional capital, Roman capital, delve into over 2,000 years of history and take in all there is to see and hear. Discover over 80 listed constructions across four historic heritage trails in the town centre. Outside of the Roman period, many architectural feats were achieved in Poitiers: ancient remains of the Roman amphitheatre from the Ist Century, medieval streets and squares with their halftimbered houses, luxury mansion houses from the 15th and 16th Centuries and many other public or civilian masterpieces in Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance or Art Nouveau style. Lifestyle in Poitiers is propitious to relaxing pauses on the banks of the Clain or in the many nature areas, parks and gardens. Café terraces, restaurants and other establishments, which are lively all year round, are ideal for food lovers. The Notre-Dame-la-Grande church has one of the most magnificent groups of sculptures in Europe, and is remarkable due to the abundance of decor on its façade. This is a real work of art in the form of «legible» timelines. Inside, the numerous arches and columns showcase a spectacular decor (painted in the 19th Century) which is reminiscent of the polychromy which existed in Roman times. This same polychromy was the origin of lighting creations by Skertzo artists, projected onto the façade each evening in summer and over the festive period. Currently serving as the law courts, the Palace of the Counts of Poitou-ducs d’Aquitaine was formerly one of the residences of Aliénor d’Aquitaine. This is one of the most magnificent architectural creations from the Middle Ages which is still visible today. The Palace is famed for the immense Aliénor ballroom, named the «salle des pas perdus» and the former dungeon, Maubergeon Tower.

Abbey Church St-Savin

Saint-Savin

Unesco World Heritage Some 45km east of Poitiers, the abbey church of Saint-Savin-surGartempe is an architectural jewel in a region blessed with more than its fair share of beautiful buildings. And in 2013, the church celebrates 30 years of UNESCO World Heritage site status, one of 32 French sites now inscribed on this elite list. Saint-Savin has been described as ‘the Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque period’ and the moment you walk in through the main doors, it is easy to see why. First thing that strikes most visitors is the size. Measuring 42m in length and 17m wide, the nave gives an immediate feeling of light and space. But look up to see the real treasures of this remarkable building. The vaulted ceiling is covered in paintings, a picture book of biblical scenes 17m above the floor. Commissioned by Benedictine monks in the 11th century, the paintings cover 460 m² and, laid end to end, would stretch for 168m. The walls of the crypt are also decorated with paintings that depict the martyrdom of Saint Savin and Saint Cyprien. The abbey church has been listed by UNESCO since 1983 on two counts: as a masterpiece of human creative genius and as an outstanding example of a lost civilisation.

Heritage

Heritage Unesco The undulating landscape of Poitou-Charente is dotted with some of the finest Romanesque churches in France, many of them along the pilgrims’routes that lead to Santiago de Compostela, burial place of St James. For more than 1 000 years, Christian travellers from all over Europe have passed through their intricately carved doorways and stood beneath the distinctive cupolas. Today these pilgrims’routes are classified by UNESCO and six churches in PoitouCharentes have also been singled out for their architectural importance or particular spiritual significance – St Hilaire in Poitiers and Melle, St Pierre in Aulnay de Saintonge, the Royal Abbey in Saint-Jean-d’Angely, St Eutrope in Saintes, and the Hôpital des Pelérins in Pons. These glorious buildings were designed to meet both the spiritual and physical needs of pilgrims in an age when people rarely travelled beyond the neighbouring village, but no religious beliefs are necessary to appreciate their beauty and spirituality. Poitou-Charentes also boasts two other UNESCO World Heritage sites. The murals inside the abbey church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe are considered the finest Romanesque examples in France, if not the Western world. It’s easy to imagine the impact on an illiterate medieval audience of the stirring Bible scenes painted on the ceiling of the nave, and the episodes from the Apocalypse inside the Galilee porch. But the citadel and star-shaped ramparts of Saint-Martin-de-Ré have a very different kind of impact, listed by UNESCO as one of 12 fortified sites across France designed in the 17 th century by Vauban, military architect to Louis XIV.

Village life There are many attractive small communities nestled in amongst the sunflowers and vineyards of PoitouCharentes, but six of them are particularly special. They have been classified amongst Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, an elite band of around 155 utterly delectable villages that have to comply with a list of stringent criteria, that include having fewer than 2,000 inhabitants and at least two historic monuments. Ile-de-Ré is home to two of them – Ars-en-Ré with its whitewashed houses and black church spire, and

La-Flotte-en-Ré with its pretty harbour and historic covered market. Mornac-sur-Seudre on the Atlantic coast has a harbour, a covered market and a Romanesque church, whilst at Talmont on the Gironde estuary, the Romanesque church stands on a dramatic cliff above the shore. Head inland to visit Aubeterre-surDronne with its galleried houses, imposing chateau and 12th century church cut into a cliff. And don’t miss Angles-sur-l’Anglin which boasts a ruined fortress, ancient watermill and streets of idyllic cottages.

Melle

Melle

Crossed by Roman roads and by the pilgrims trails to Santiago de Compostela; torn apart by religious intolerance in the 17th century; and exploited for their underground silver reserves, the countryside around Melle bears many reminders of its colourful past. Today visitors can explore the rich heritage of an area classified as Pays d’Art et d’Histoire since 2008. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Romanesque art flourished here, leaving its mark on the landscape around Melle and writing important pages in local history. Around 40 churches bear still witness to this period of religious and architectural renewal. Just as the Compostela pilgrims before them, modern visitors can explore three Romanesque churches in the small character town of Melle. The most symbolic of the trio is St-Hilaire, awarded World Heritage Site by UNESCO, but Melle is also renowned for the Hôtel de Menoc dating from the 15-19th centuries, its covered market and the remains of the medieval town walls.

Village Life

Angles-sur-l’Anglin Picture-postcard pretty, Angles-sur-l’Anglin combines a ruined fortress, ancient watermill, and rows of quaint houses. Classified amongst the Most Beautiful Villages in France, the upper and lower villages are divided by the tranquil Anglin river. Stroll beneath turrets and bell towers; relax on the river banks; and see ladies at work on the intricate local embroidery ‘Les Jours d’Anglin’, once supplied to the lingerie manufacturers of Paris. Just outside the village is the Roc-aux-Sorciers, a carved frieze dating from the Magdalanian era. Don’t miss the chance to visit the interpretation centre and see a replica of this important example of prehistoric art. For Angles and Chauvigny: La Vienne Tourist Board - Tel: +33 (0)5 49 37 48 58 Email : reservations@tourisme-vienne.com

Chauvigny The medieval town of Chauvigny, east of Poitiers, is unique in Europe, boasting not one, not even two, but five individual fortresses constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries. If your imagination is fired by the Middle Ages, you won’t want to miss strolling the atmospheric streets between these imposing castles. At the centre stands St Peter’s Church with its richly decorated, Romanesque interior. Visit the industrial archaeology centre in the keep; the museum of popular traditions and archaeology; and watch the breath-taking birds of prey display at the Château des Evêques – a destination for all ages.

Oiron The Château d’Oiron near Loudun was built in the 16th century to house the collection of paintings and collectables belonging to Claude Gouffier, equerry to Henri II. Today this fairy tale castle showcases an eclectic mix of contemporary art in a period setting. Visitors to Oiron should expect the unexpected. Sixty artists have had a hand in decorating the chateau’s 60 rooms in contemporary style, inspired by its elegant architecture and rich history. Permanent works are complemented by two or three temporary exhibitions each year, as well as festivals of music, circus skills and street arts. A day out that is guaranteed to challenge, surprise and entertain.

The Loire-Marais Poitevin Loop The ‘Thouet à Vélo’ circuit in Deux-Sèvres runs for 120 km in nine sections from the source of the Thouet to the Beugnon on the northern border of the department. In June 2012, the new 53-km ‘Niort Océan’ section was completed, the final section of a 250km cycling trail – the V43 – that links Saumur, Niort and La Rochelle, then linking the itinerary ‘Loire à Vélo’ to the Marais Poitevin to the Vélodyssée.

On the Green With a choice of 20 first class courses in some stunning locations, Poitou-Charentes is a great destination for a French golf holiday or weekend break. And the temperate climate and long hours of sunshine mean you can play all year round. French golf clubs have a surprisingly relaxed atmosphere with fewer rules than in the UK. Green fees and club hire are attractively priced and you’ll find the dress code less stringent than at home. Golfers who like a challenge should try the 27 holes of the Golf du Château des Forges at Les Forges near the Marais Poitevin, where three 9-hole courses can be combined to make three different 18-hole courses. The beautiful links course of Golf de la Prée overlooks the Baie de l’Aiguillon and Ile de Ré, whilst the picturesque Charente Valley is dotted with attractive clubs. The 18-hole Golf du Cognac in Saint-Brice is particularly popular with British visitors. So too is the Golf du Haut Poitou, where an 18-hole challenge and 9-hole pitch-and-putt course overlook the beautiful lake of Saint Cyr. And don’t miss the spa town of La Roche-Posay to combine golf with wellbeing treatments.

Health & relaxation Our Coup de

Life in Poitou-Charentes has always been strongly influenced by the sea, whether for fishing, trade or recreation. But the waters off the French Atlantic Coast can also benefit mind and body through thalassotherapy – a range of medically-proven treatments which harness the therapeutic and relaxation properties of seawater and marine minerals. Historically used in the treatment of joint problems, skin conditions and certain respiratory disorders, thalassotherapy is also now used for general relaxation and wellbeing. So why not treat yourself to some soothing treatments at one of the six centres along the PoitouCharentes coast, all set in beautiful locations. Thalasso La Rochelle Sud

Whilst thalassotherapy has only been popular since the 19th century, natural spring water has been used in medical treatments since Roman times. Many of these medical spas – or thermes – now have separate wellbeing centres offering relaxation and beauty treatments. Three of the medical spa towns in Poitou-Charentes are near the coast Rochefort, Saujon and Jonzac - whilst La Roche-Posay, home to the worldfamous line of skincare products, lies in the east of the region, and opened last year a beautiful Spa centre.

Spa Source La Roche-Posay Leading spa destination in France, La Roche-Posay can help relax, lose weight, or pamper your skin with its wide range of treatments, split between four different areas. Spoil yourself in the NaturaSpa; address skin problems in the DermaSpa; fight the effects of ageing in the Anti-Ageing space; and tackle your wellbeing issues in the Wellness/Fitness area. Gastronomic Drinks Cognac

Pineau

Only spirit made within a strictly controlled area has the right to call itself Cognac, the unique flavour coming from a combination of climate, soil and Atlantic influence. The AOC quality certificate was granted in 1936 and today 5,600 vineyards cover an area of 75,000 hectares (185,000 acres). The vineyards of the Charente and Charente-Maritime departments are the largest vineyards for white grapes in Europe, most of them used to produce Cognac. More than 21,000 people work in the industry, and every year 130 million bottles are sold in more than 100 countries across the world, almost 95 % of production being exported to the United States, Asia and Europe.

Don’t visit Cognac Country without trying the area’s favourite aperitif, the delicious Pineau des Charentes. Made from three parts grape juice to one part cognac, this AOC fortified wine is drunk chilled as an aperitif or dessert wine. You won’t just find it served in a glass either… try Pineau des Charentes served in the hollow of a juicy Charentais melon as a refreshing starter to a meal. There’s a Pineau variety to suit everyone’s taste - choose from dry Pineau blanc or the fruitier Pineau rosé. Stop off for a free tasting - or dégustation - at roadside stalls and farms all over the cognac vineyards.

Wines Poitou-Charentes may be internationally famous as the home of Cognac, but the region also produces some good local wines in red, white and rosé that are the perfect accompaniment to everyday meals. Look out for the labels Vins de Haut-Poitou AOC and Vins de Charente for wines that will provide flavour and freshness without straining the holiday budget. And of course when you drink local wine with the abundant fresh produce that comes from this fertile region, you can also be sure of enjoying maximum taste with minimal environmental impact – the ultimate ‘slow food’meal.

Gastronomy

Gastronomic Produce Salt The salt marshes along the north-west coast of the Ile de Ré are renowned for their fleur de sel or ‘white gold’. Although less important to the island economy today than in centuries past, the industry has been successfully revived in recent decades, helping to preserve the traditional Rétais way of life. Discover the whole story at the Ecomusée du Marais Salant ; explore the salt marsh trails on foot or by bike and taste the unique flavour of fleur de sel sprinkled on the island’s delicious AOC new potatoes. For edible souvenirs, take home a tub of coarse salt crystals or a bag of scrumptious salt-flavoured caramels.

Butter Artisan butter from Poitou-Charentes is exported across the world, where it is prized by food lovers for its distinctive taste. A dairy was established in the village of Echiré near Niort, in 1894 and today Echiré butter is still churned the traditional way in wooden barrels. Choose from unsalted, with its delicate hazelnut flavour, or slightly salted, a favourite with patisserie chefs. South-west of Niort towards Rochefort, Surgères has been synonymous with top quality table butter since the dairy started production in 1889. Like Echiré butter, Beurre de Surgères comes from locally sourced milk and carries the European PDO standard – Protected Designation of Origin.

Goat’s Cheese Goat farms and dairies may seem an unusual tourist attraction but when you have as many different cheeses as Poitou-Charentes, they are a real attraction for your gourmet visitors ! The Route du Chabichou et des Fromages de Chèvre winds for some 200 km across the northern half of the region, linking producers who actively welcome visitors. Goats’ cheeses come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but the most famous of all is the Chabichou, thought to have been introduced by the Saracens who stayed in the area after their defeat in Poitiers in 732. They produced cheese ‘de cheblis’ (Arabic for ‘goat’), which later changed to Chabichou. Watch out for the brown tourist signs.

Oysters The oyster parks of the Marennes-Oléron basin produce some 60,000 tons of shellfish every year, almost half the total French production. Brightly painted wooden cabins line the rectangular ponds that span both the Ile d’Oléron and the mainland around the Seudre estuary. Two of the four varieties of Marennes-Oléron oysters have been awarded the Red Label quality mark for their unique flavour, achieved through a process of double-refinement. This involves fattening up the tiny larva produced in open water in shallow basins on shore. Find out more by touring an oyster farm and visiting the Cité de l’Huître at Marennes.
