or the first time in 31 years, Polaris Career Center will be on the ballot seeking passage of a 0.69 mill permanent improvement issue on the November 3, 2015, ballot. This ballot issue will help Polaris maintain its current quality of education, strengthen job prospects for students and produce graduates who are more attractive to potential employers. Polaris is all about jobs that help strengthen the local economy and provide students with a head start on their chosen career paths. In addition to learning critical job training skills, many Polaris students can earn college credit for their coursework. Passage of this issue will enable us to: s Update program labs and equipment so students can have access to the latest technology and advanced programs needed for college and/or the workforce. s Help member school districts offset costs for important careertechnical STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs at the local middle and high schools. s Provide key training and industry certifications that help graduates and adult learners find good paying jobs in our local communities. Polaris career-technical training programs donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end at the middle and high school levels. Polaris offers hundreds of Adult Education programs including G.E.D preparation, personal enrichment and job/career training programs designed to enhance adult studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; job skills and employment prospects.

During the past eight years, Polaris expenditures have risen by less than two percent while revenues have declined by more than six percent. We have continued to live within our means and have worked hard to hold the line on spending while more than doubling our student enrollment. Cardiographic Technician (230 Hours) The Cardiographic Technician program at Polaris Career Center is designed to prepare students to perform non-invasive cardiac testing procedures such as electrocardiograms, Holter and telemetry monitoring, and stress testing. Cardiographic technicians work in hospitals and cardiology offices to assist physicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of heart disease. Students will receive 130 hours of classroom and lab time. In addition, students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a 100-hour unpaid externship in a local clinical setting. A minimum of 90% attendance with a C average or better is required for students to participate in the externship opportunity in a non-smoking facility. Note: Externship hours must be completed during daytime working hours, Monday through Friday. Healthcare providers require immunizations for students participating in externships. The cost of the immunization(s) will be the student’s responsibility. Prior to the externship, students will be required to pass a background check. Upon completion, students will be eligible to take the Cardiographic Technician (CCT) exam through Cardiovascular Credentialing International. Prerequisite: Medical Terminology or concurrent enrollment. Proof of successful course completion (transcript or certificate of completion) is required. Cosmetology (1500 Hours) The Cosmetology program prepares students for a challenging career in this exciting, cutting-edge field. Gain hands-on experience in the Polaris Career Center New Beginnings Salon while obtaining the industry knowledge necessary for the State Board Cosmetology license. Acquire skills commonly used in cosmetology in the following areas: • Dispensary operations • Reception duties • Sanitation • Salon management Emphasis will be placed on the hands-on practice of: • Scalp care and hair treatments • Hair highlighting and toning • Shaping and cutting hair • Manicuring and pedicuring • Styling hair • Facial treatments • Permanent waving • Wig and hairpiece care • Hair relaxing and coloring Career Options (State license required): • Cosmetologist • Esthetician • Color technician • Nail technician • Perm specialist • Platform artist • Hair cutting specialist • Equipment sales Students will also learn employability skills. Early Child Care Education/ Child Development Associate (930 Hours)

Dental Assisting (900 Hours) A career as a dental assistant offers many employment opportunities and the field is growing according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. As valuable members of the dental care team, assistants increase the efficiency of the dentist in the delivery of quality oral health care. This course will teach the skills needed to enter the dental assisting field. Skills taught include: • Laboratory materials • Introduction to dentistry/oral health and nutrition • Radiology • Infection control • Practice management • Head and neck anatomy/ • Computer technology physiology • Dental specialties • Patient care/dental charting/ • Employability skills psychology • Restorative materials/advanced chairside Dental Assisting students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a 250-hour, unpaid externship (additional days may be required for the externship). A minimum of 90% attendance with a C average or better is required for students to participate in the externship opportunity. Students completing the program will be eligible to take the Certified Ohio Dental Assisting examination, and earn the CODA (Certified Ohio Dental Assistant) credential. Students will also complete the Ohio Dental Assistant Radiographer initial training course. This initial training course satisfies the requirements of the Ohio State Dental Board and allows the student to earn the Ohio Dental Assistant Radiographer license. Students can expect the following additional costs: physical exam, immunizations and/or titres & TB test, and background check.

The Early Child Care Education/Child Development Associate (CDA) is the most widely recognized credential in early child care education (ECE) and is a key stepping stone on the path of career advancement in ECE. The Polaris Career Center CDA program is designed to prepare students to successfully complete the requirements for the nationally recognized CDA credential. Employment opportunities include, Pre-K or Infant/Toddler teacher, teacher assistant, or family childcare provider. The CDA credential is based on a core set of competency standards which guide early care professionals as they work toward becoming qualified teachers of young children. CDA students will learn how to nurture the emotional, physical, intellectual, and social development of children. Students will also learn employability skills. The CDA student will gain knowledge of how to put the CDA Competency Standards into practice and an understanding of why those standards help children move with success from one developmental stage to another. With the new Step-Up-to-Quality requirements, earning a CDA credential will enhance a student’s job opportunities in the field. Learn the CDA Observation Method, R-O-R (Review, Observance & Reflect) and plan for the Verification Visit. Students will receive 450-hours of classroom training and have the opportunity to gain practical experience in a 480-hour unpaid required field experience/ externship at an area child care center. A minimum of 90% attendance with a C average or better is required for students to participate in the externship opportunity. Prior to the field experience/externship, students will be required to have and show proof of a physical exam, complete and pass a background check, obtain necessary immunizations/titres, and a TB test. Note: Field experience hours will vary between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM and will be determined by the child care center. The highly trained technicians in the Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) profession maintain the complex HVAC/R systems used in residential, light industrial, and commercial buildings. Trained technicians have job stability and high earning potential. The HVAC/R program at Polaris Career Center will help the student access this growing field. This program takes place in a comprehensive classroom and practical learning environment. The program includes: • ICE certification • Introduction to Construction and Maintenance (Core Curriculum) • Duct work • HVAC/R safety-related issues • Electrical code & electrical controls • Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration • Mechanical maintenance (HVAC/R) • Air properties & balancing • Heating & air conditioning • Heating & air conditioning installation procedures diagnostic techniques • Understanding schematics • Refrigeration troubleshooting • Airside systems • Customer service • Proper venting • Employability skills • CFC refrigerant, recovery/recycling certification All instructional materials, as well as the CFC Refrigerant Recovery/Recycling and ICE certification examination fees, are included. Medical Assisting (946 Hours) There is no better time than the present to enter the healthcare field. The Medical Assisting program is a great way to gain access to this exciting profession. Recently, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have determined credentialed medical assistants can enter orders into patient medical records for the computerized provider order entry (CPOE) – a task previously limited to licensed healthcare professionals. Ultimately, medical assistant students who become credentialed can offer additional workflow efficiency and compliance benefits to their employers. The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares students to perform administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures for employment in a physician’s office, clinic, or hospital. The course will cover, but is not limited to, the following: • Health insurance claim forms • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology • Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED • Entry-level clinical skills • First aid/medical emergencies • Phlebotomy certification • Computer skills • Scheduling appointments • Psychology of human behavior • Records management/electronic • Employability skills medical records • OSHA/universal precautions/ • Medical law and ethics personal protective equipment • Entry-level ICD-9/CPT coding • HIPAA/standards and guidelines Medical Assisting students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a 160-hour unpaid externship which will take place during the program’s 946 hours. A minimum of 90% attendance with a C average or better is required for students to participate in the externship opportunity. Students will be required to have a routine physical, drug screening and pass a criminal background check prior to externship. Some healthcare systems and physician practices may require proof of current immunizations for students participating in externships. Students must also complete the Hepatitis B series prior to participation in their externships. Adult Education Job & Career Training Programs

Medical Billing & Coding (900 Hours) This 900-hour program is designed for those who wish to gain employment in medical billing, coding and health information management. Employment opportunities include physician practices, outpatient clinics, billing companies as well as a variety of other medical facilities. Students will develop a thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diseases and conditions, electronic health records, practice management software, medical office administration practices, diagnostic and procedural coding, hospital billing, reimbursement and claim form procedures, employability skills and healthcare law and ethics. The program includes instructor lectures, knowledge based assessments, practical applications, and self-directed study. Graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions as medical administrative assistants, electronic health records specialists, and medical billing and coding specialists. Students will complete a 180-hour unpaid externship during daytime working hours towards the end of the program. A minimum of 90% attendance with a C average or better is required for students to participate in the externship opportunity. Students will be eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association Certified Medical Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS), Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), and the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) certifications exams. Healthcare providers may require immunizations for students participating in externships. It is highly recommended the student have keyboarding skills with some experience in Microsoft Word & Excel. Natural Resources/Ranger/ Basic Peace Officer Academy (600 Hours) This program will adhere to all State of Ohio OPOTA/C standards. The Polaris Career Center Natural Resources/Ranger/Basic Peace Officer Academy prepares candidates for police and natural resource law enforcement officer positions and other careers that require peace officer training. This 600-hour program is conducted under the auspices of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission. The instruction will be provided by those who have experience and expertise in the field of law enforcement, natural resources, and parks and recreation. The Academy training includes: • First aid • Academy uniforms (except pants and shoes) • Patrol • Administration • Civil disorders • Legal • Investigation • Human resources • Physical conditioning • Firearms • Aerosol defense spray • Driving • Expandable baton • Subject control • Employability skills As an all-inclusive academy, the following are provided for use during the program: • Use of duty belt with accessories • Expandable baton (holster, magazine pouch, • Chemical repellent spray handcuff case etc.) (OC/Pepper Spray) • Handgun • Taser • Shotgun Applicants must be 21 years old by the completion of the program, have a valid driver’s license, valid automobile insurance, and must complete and pass a background check, pass the physical assessment test and physical examination. All state and federal guidelines dictating the carrying of a firearm and minimum physical fitness standards set by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission will be followed. Commissioned and open enrollment applicants will be accepted. Natural Resources/Ranger/Basic Peace Officer Academy (OPOTA) Requirements and Prerequisites to Register: Pre-registrations will be taken for this program. Phlebotomy Certification (252 Hours)

The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students for pharmacy career opportunities in retail, hospital, and long-term care settings. Pharmacy Technicians assist licensed pharmacists to provide medication and other health care products. Pharmacy Technician students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through an unpaid 96-hour externship. The program prepares students to take the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) Certification exam. Students will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods on adults using proper techniques and precautions including: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, and butterfly needles. Students will also learn employability skills. Both classroom instruction and clinical experience/externship during a 100-hour unpaid externship at a healthcare facility will provide an opportunity for the student to gain the skill and knowledge necessary to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam through the National Healthcareer Association. A minimum of 90% attendance with a C average or better is required for students to participate in the externship opportunity. Note: Externship hours will be scheduled during the day and students will be placed as space is available. Prior to externship, students will be required to complete and pass a criminal background check and complete the three-part Hepatitis B vaccination series (at the student’s expense). Students must have the first of three Hepatitis B vaccinations prior to the first day of class. Drug testing and a flu shot may be required (at the student’s expense). FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION Students are responsible for submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It is highly recommended the student start the application process for all financial aid options well in advance of registering for a program. Federal financial aid including loans and grants will first be applied to student tuition accounts. Funds remaining above current charges will be refunded and mailed, in the form of a check, and sent to the student’s address of record within 2 weeks of receipt of the funds. All financial aid student funds are disbursed through the Treasurer’s office at Polaris Career Center. Providing the student meets satisfactory progress standards and has completed all necessary financial aid documentation, the financial aid student refunds are disbursed to the student as scheduled and stated in the Student Policies and Financial Aid Consumer Handbook found on the Polaris Career Center website www.polaris.edu. Gainful employment information may also be found at www.polaris.edu. The following U.S. Department financial aid options are available for those who qualify.

PELL GRANT

APPLYING FOR THE PELL GRANT:

• The maximum award for 2015-2016 is $5,775 for a 900+ clock hour program and $3,850 for a 600-clock hour program. • Award amounts are based on the student’s EFC (Expected Family Contribution), calculated from the student’s previous year’s income information submitted on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). • Students are required to self-pay the balance of tuition not covered by the Pell Grant, and/or the student may apply for a student loan. • All Pell grant funds, when received, are applied directly to the student’s tuition balance. The Pell grant does not need to be repaid. • To remain eligible for Pell grant funds, the student must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance at all times, as well as maintain satisfactory academic progress (C average). • Pell grant funds are meant to assist students with tuition and will not cover tuition costs completely. Students may consider applying for a William D. Ford student loan to pay the additional tuition costs not covered by the Pell grant. It is suggested that a student wishing to complete a student loan application (www.studentloans.gov) do so at the same time they complete their Pell grant (FAFSA) application. A student loan is only activated after a student registers for a program and accepts the award.

Basic Rider Course - Beginning Rider (BRC) (Approximately 16 hrs.) This class is your first step in learning to ride a motorcycle. It is intended for the true beginner who has never ridden a motorcycle and for the experienced rider looking to refine their skills and obtain a motorcycle endorsement. If successful, you will receive a completion card which you will take to the driver’s license bureau, and after paying the necessary fee, a motorcycle endorsement will be added to your driver’s license. You do not have to take another riding test at the driver’s license bureau. Classes consist of 4 hours of classroom training, followed by approximately 12 hours of actual riding on a controlled course. Courses are offered on a variety of days and times, so make sure you know your class dates and times when registering. For the first class, bring your driver’s license along with either your motorcycle endorsement or a valid temporary riding permit, which you obtain by passing the written test for the permit at the driver’s license bureau. Otherwise, you will not be admitted into the class and your tuition will not be refunded. Also, bring an ink pen, and dress casually. Proper riding attire will be discussed on the first night of class. NOTE: All classes start promptly! You will NOT be admitted once the published class time begins, and your tuition will not be refunded!

School Closing In the event school is closed due to inclement weather, an announcement TO THAT EFFECT WILL BE MADE ON VARIOUS RADIO AND 46 STATIONS )F THE DAYTIME Polaris high school classes are cancelled, all Adult day and evening classes will be cancelled. Berea and Strongsville School Closing When the Berea and Strongsville City School Districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s classes are cancelled or dismissed due to inclement weather, evening classes will not be held regardless of weather changes. Classes missed will be added at the end of the session.
