¿QUÉ ES AMAL? _WHAT DOES AMAL MEAN? Amal es esperanza. Bajo ese nombre nace en 2003 el Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe organizado por la Fundación Araguaney-Puente de Culturas. Se trata del único Festival de estas características que se celebra en Europa, con el objetivo de aproximar a un público cada vez más numeroso la realidad social y cultural del mundo árabe, utilizando un lenguaje universal tan maravilloso como es el cine. _Amal means hope. Under this name and organized by the Araguaney Foundation – Bridge of Cultures, the International Euroarab Film Festival was established in 2003. Amal is the only Festival in Europe with the following characteristics. It aims at the circulation of a realistic image of social and cultural reality in the Arab world in order to gain a more and more extensive audience making use of the marvelous universal language of cinema.

Desde la esperanza, entre el 23 y el 31 de octubre la séptima edición de Amal presentó una intensa semana de actividades, entre las que destacaron películas de Selección Oficial y secciones especiales como los Talleres de cine infantil, o el Ciclo sobre Los primeros pasos del cine egipcio. _Between the 23rd and the 31st of October the seventh edition of Amal offered an intense week full of activities related to the topic hope, among them the projection of feature, short films and documentaries. Besides the official program special sections such as the cinema workshop for children for the screenigs about the first steps of Egyptian Cinema were presented.

El Festival ha crecido y madurado a lo largo de los años, reforzando y ampliado su oferta cultural con actividades como la exposición Artistas Árabes, Fondos Fundación Araguaney, el reto Amal Express y las ya tradicionales Jornadas Gastronómicas Árabes. Todo ello con el objetivo de ofrecer una amplia visión del mundo árabe. _Thanks to a team which works the whole year with enthusiasm, the Festival has grown up during the years, reinforced and increased the cultural offer with activities such as the exhibitionArabian

Un año más, el Festival constituyó un referente para todas aquellas personas interesadas en sumergirse en la cultura árabe, más allá de los tópicos y los estereotipos. Más de 3000 espectadores han vuelto a respaldar un evento único, un Festival de Cine Euro Árabe en el corazón de Santiago de Compostela. _More than 3000 spectators came again to support an unique event, an Euro-Arab Film Festival in the heart of Santiago de Compostela.

OBJETIVOS_AIMS El principal objetivo del Festival es aportar una mirada rigurosa y necesaria sobre los países árabes, tratando de combatir la imagen negativa que a veces se muestra a través de los medios de comunicación. La cultura árabe sigue siendo una gran desconocida y el Festival trabaja incesantemente para darla a conocer, a través del lenguaje audiovisual. Establecer un canal de difusión de cine árabe es una de las prioridades del Festival. Para ello cuenta con la colaboración de otros festivales e instituciones, tratando de acercar este tipo de cine al mayor número de espectadores posible, tanto europeos como de los países árabes. _The Festival aims to show a realistic and necessary perspective of the Arab world. Therefore, fights against the negative image shown in the media. Arab culture still remains as an unknown field of knowledge. Making use of the film language, the Festival works hard against ignorance. To spread out information about Arab Cinema is one of the main goals of the Festival. Therefore it depends on the support and collaboration of other festivals and institutions in order to make this kind of cinema available for an audience as big as possible including the European as well as the Arab spectators

El Festival permite al público acceder a un cine que no llega a las salas comerciales y que en un gran número de casos, no cuenta con distribución en España: películas árabes, coproducciones euro-árabes y, en general, producciones que abordan la realidad de estos pueblos y sus habitantes, personas con los mismos sentimientos, preocupaciones e inquietudes que nosotros y con los que tenemos mucho más en común de lo que pueda parecer. _The Festival gives access to a kind of cinema which is not shown in the commercial auditoriums and which in many cases cannot expect a lot of distribution in Spain: Arab films, Euroarab coproductions and many of the films which represent the reality of these folks. The movies show people with the same feelings, problems and worries which resemble us more than we expect.

La propuesta cultural de Amal va más allá del cine. Nos permite acercarnos a la cultura árabe a través de actividades dirigidas a los cinco sentidos. Imágenes, sabores, melodías, aromas … _The cultural program of Amal includes more than its film offer. We are asked to get to know Arab culture with all of our five senses: pictures, tastes, melodies, aromas, dialogs…

ÁRABES CRISTIANOS _ CHRISTIAN ARABS El propósito de este documental es centrarse en los árabes cristianos como una parte de la sociedad árabe. Son muchos los temas que se suceden en tan sólo 100 palabras: las raíces cristianas y su origen árabe, la relación entre las iglesias árabes y las occidentales, además de la participación de lo cristiano en varios campos de la sociedad como la cultura, y la economía y la lucha estereotipada entre cristianos y musulmanes, tratando, finalmente, de deteriorar el rol del árabe-cristiano. _The purpose of the film is focus on the Christian Arabs as a part of the Arabic society. In just 100 words there are lots of cases, such as: the Cristian Roots and it’s Arabic origin and the relation between the Arabic and western churches, the participation of the Christian in various fields of the society like culture, economy and the stereotyped struggle between Christians and Muslims, and finally discuss the decline of the Christian Arab role. INSHALLAH BEIJING! _INSHALLAH BEIJING! Ghadir sueña con que, por fin, alguien le compre unos tenis para correr. Nader se entrena mientras espera que un misil no le caiga encima. Zakia no tiene permiso de las autoridades militares para acceder a la piscina. Son atletas palestinos que se entrenan en Jericó en julio de 2008 para los juegos olímpicos de Beijing. Inshallah, si Dios quiere, porque deben superar muchísimas dificultades antes de alcanzar China. La primera y más importante, la dificultad de competir para un país que no existe (Palestina) y que no tiene medios para apoyar a sus atletas.

_Ghadir dreams that someone will buy her running shoes. Nader trains while hoping that a missile doesn´t land on him. Zakia hasn´t got a permit from the military authorities to get to the swimming pool. They are athletes belonging to the Palestiniam team training in Jericho in July 2008 to take part in Beijing Olympic Games. Inshallah, God willing, because a lot of difficulties must to be overcome before reaching China. First and foremost, the difficulty in competing for a country that doesn´t exist yet- Palestina- and that doesn´t have the means to support its athletes.

YO SOY GAZA _I´M GAZA Este documental se adentra en la importancia histórica del período 2008-2009 con el brutal ataque israelí sobre Gaza, además de su impacto sobre Palestina. La película, rodada en Gaza es posterior a los ataques, muestra las historias personales que no abordaron los medios de comunicación, dejando ver el impacto potencial a largo plazo, tanto social como psicológico que dejará la guerra en la gente de Gaza. La película anima al espectador a que vea estos efectos y estimula el planteamiento de otro enfoque más logrado para reavivar Gaza. _This documentary looks into the historical significance of the brutal 2008-2009 period, with the Israeli attack on Ghazza, and moreover its impact on Palestine. The film, which was shot in Ghazza, subsequent to the attacks, addresses the personal stories that were not talked by media; it shows the potential long term social and psychological impact of war on the people of Ghazza. 33 DÍAS _33 DAYS Filmado durante el ataque masivo israelí en Líbano en el verano de 2006, 33 Días llega a la vida real de cuatro personas: un director teatral que trabaja con niños que necesitan refugiarse en el teatro después de que sus casas fueran destruídas, un periodista luchando por cubrir la guerra desde un plató de televisión en llamas, un sanitario que coordina la ayuda de emergencia para que llegue a miles de desplazados y una directora de redacción que intenta dar abasto entre la guerra y su hijo recién nacido. _Filmed during the mass Israeli atack on Lebanon in the summer of 2006, 33 Días follows the real-life stories of four people: a theatre director who works with children that take refuge in a theatre after their homes are destroyed, a journalist struggling to cover the war from a television station under fire, an aid worker coordinating emergency relief efforts for thousands of displaced people, and a news-desk director trying to cope not only with the war, but also with her new-born baby.

AL NAKBA _AL NAKBA Documental que cubre el origen de la catástrofe palestina a través de archivos y análisis profundos de la historia israelí, palestina y británica. La primera parte cubre el período entre 1799 e 1947, en el cual planes ocultos apuntaban a convertir Palestina en Israel, donde el rol de los mandatarios británicos aplastaba la revolución palestina (1936-1939) y el rol de los sionistas era de terroristas. La segunda parte profundiza en lo ocurrido en 1948, en la limpieza étnica y en la expulsión de 800.000 palestinos que se convirtieron en refugiados, que son ahora 5 millones en todo el mundo.

_A documentary about the Palestinian catastrophe root causes via rare archive and in depth analysis of Israeli, Palestinian and British historians. Part one covers the period between 1799 – 1947 in which hidden plans aimed to turn “Palestine” into “Israel”, then the role of the British mandate was crushing the Palestinian revolution (1936 – 1939) and the role of the Zionists was to be terrorists. Part two digs into what happened in 1948, into the ethnic cleansing and the expulsion of 800.000 thousand Palestinians who turn to refugees and who are now over five million all over the world.

Semaan lleva una vida tranquila en su granja en el pequeño pueblo de Ain al-Halazoun, en las montañas libanesas. La aldea fue completamente evacuada y destruida en combate durante la guerra civil del Líbano entre 1975 y 1990. Hoy en día, años después de la reconciliación oficial, sus habitantes, que pertenecen a una misma familia, vuelven regularmente para cultivar sus tierras o visitar sus casas, aunque yéndose siempre antes de que se ponga el sol. Simon El Habre observa la vida de este pueblo casi fantasma e intenta reflejar la memoria individual y colectiva de un país que parece vivir en una amnesia y que es vulnerable a una nueva guerra civil. _Semaan has a quiet life in his farm in the small village of Ain al-Halazoun in the Lebanese mountains. The hamlet was completely emptied and destroyed in combats during the civil war in Lebanon between 1975 and 1990. Today, many years after an official reconciliation, its inhabitants, who are all from one family, regularly go back to the village to cultivate their plots of land or visit their, houses and always leave before sunset. Simon El Habre observes the life in his almost ghost village and tries to reflect on the collective and individual memory in a country that seems to live in an amnesia and is vulnerable to a new civil war.

When they arrive at the promised land things change and they become illegal inmigrants. The film is an intimate regard about the world of illegal inmigrants and also a reflection about a very real problem nowadays.

MUÑECAS, UNA MUJER DE DAMASO _DOLLS, A WOMAN FROM DAMASCUS En el entorno tradicional Damasceno, Manal es retada a conservar su calidad como ama de casa, a pesar de que ella insiste en perseguir su sueño personal de volver a trabajar. Mientras trata de salir adelante, sin descanso, termina viendo como sus dos hijas están fascinadas por la cara sonriente que ven en la televisión todos los días. Aquí llega el fenómeno árabe, la muñeca Fulla. Tras la sonrisa de Fulla se esconde su jefe de marketing, quien sabe que la sociedad damascena es número uno en la venta de productos tradicionales. A través de la personificación de estas tradiciones, Fulla es capaz de destronar a Barbie, no sólo en Siria, sino en todo el mundo árabe. _In a traditional Damascene enviorment, Manal is challenged to cherish her excellence as a housewife. Still, she insists on chasing a personal dream of getting back to work. As she tries to get hold of all ends together insistently and restlessly, her two young daughters are mesmerized by the smiling face they see on tv everyday. For here comes the Arab phenomenon doll, Fulla. Behind Fulla´s smile is her marketing manager who particulary knows that Damascene society traditions are top-selling products. And that by personifiying these traditions alone, Fulla was able of pushing Barbie off her throne not only in Syria, but trhoughout the Arab wold.

EL COLOR DE LOS OLIVOS _THE COLOUR OF THE OLIVE TREES Como muchas familias palestinas, la familia Armer vive rodeada por el infame muro de Cisjordania. Su vida diaria está dominada por vallas electrificadas, cerraduras y el enjambre constante de soldados armados. Através de una lente sensible descubrimos el mundo privado de los ocho miembros de la familia. A medida que se revelan sus dramas, vislumbramos sus luchas constantes y los pequeños detalles simpáticos que los sostienen, incluyendo a amigos de la escuela, árboles oliváceos y dos pequeños asnos. Este documental revela la vida desconocida de los palestinos.

_Like many Palestinian families, the Amers live surrounded by the infamous West Bank Wall. Their daily lives are dominated by electrified fences, locks and constant swarms of armed soldiers. Through a sensitive lens we discover the private world of all eight members of the family. As their dramas unfold we catch a glimpse on their constant struggles and the small, endearing details that sustain them including school friends, olive trees and two small donkeys. This documentary reveals the unknown life of Palestinian people.

LOS CONDENADOS DEL MAR _THE DAMNED OF THE SEA Essaouira es un pequeño pueblo marroquí en la costa atlántica, primer puerto en pescar sardina del mundo. Hoy en día el pescado ha abandonado sus aguas. Miles de pequeños pescadores de Essaouira, Safi y Agadir, han tenido que emigrar al sur, a Dakhla, en el Sáhara, esperando pescar algo. Entonces es cuando comienza una lucha infernal. En un segundo plano, pesqueros de países extranjeros pescan en las aguas con sus redes mortíferas, matando ecosistemas enteros. En primer plano, se retrata a pequeños pescadores desesperados porque les han robado su medio de vida. ¿Quién se responsabiliza de esta sentencia de muerte?

_Essaouira is a small Moroccan town on the Atlantic coast it was the first sardine fishing port in the world. Today the fish has left its waters. Thousands of Moroccan fishermen from Essaouira, Safi and Agadir have to move further down south to Dakhla in the Sahara in the hope to catch some fish. Then, starts a hellish struggle. In the background, trawlers from foreign countries drag the waters with their death nets, killing an entire ecosystem. In the foreground, captivating portraits of desperate fishermen who’ve been robbed of their way of life. Who shares the responsibility for this death sentence?

CHECKPOINT ROCK: CANCIONES DESDE PALESTINA _CHECK POINT ROCK: SONGS FROM PALESTINE Un viaje por uno de los lugares sobre el cual el mundo tiene siempre puesta su mirada, pero del que desconocemos casi todo. ¿Cuál es la música que pone voz y melodía a este lugar mítico? ¿Quiénes son sus músicos más representativos y cómo viven? ¿Qué piensan del destino único que les ha tocado vivir y cómo se enfrentan a través de sus letras y sus melodías? De las vallas publicitarias y el neón de Tel Aviv a la pobreza y desesperanza de los territorios ocupados de Cisjordania y el gran campo de concentración en el que han convertido la Franja de Gaza. _This is a trip through one of the places the world is always looking at, but we know almost nothing about it. Which is the music that gives this mythical place with a voice and melody? Who are its most representative musicians and how do they live? What do they think about the unique place that they have to live in and how do they deal with it through their lyrics and melodies? From the hoardings and the neon of Tel Aviv to the poverty and despair of the Occupied Territories West Bank and the concentration camp in which the Gaza Strip.

POUPIYA _POUPIYA Después de unos días de vacaciones en su país natal, Marruecos, una joven retoma su vida en Francia. A lo largo de sus siete años de historia, el Festival ha ido ampliando y reforzando su oferta cultural. Además de las proyecciones de las películas en competición, la séptima edición de Amal presentó en Compostela un calendario repleto de actividades. Una propuesta que va más allá del cine, con gastronomía, arte y música. _During it´s seven editions the Festival has grown up, improved and expanded its cultural offer. Besides the projection of the films in competition, the seventh edition of Amal presented a whole calendar full of interesting parallel activities, all taking place in Santiago de Compostela. A schedule which included much more thanscreanigs: gastronomy, art and music.

TALLER DE CINE INFANTIL _CINEMA WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN

El Festival dedicó las mañanas del 26 al 30 de octubre a unos espectadores muy especiales, los niños. Casi 400 pequeños disfrutaron de la magia de Amal, en una actividad que les permitió educarse en valores tan importantes como la diversidad, la tolerancia y el respeto a través del cine, los juegos y el diálogo. Los colegios recibieron fichas de trabajo para que los pequeños espectadores pudieran ampliar sus conocimientos sobre la realidad del mundo árabe y el cine, antes de asistir a las proyecciones. _ During the mornings between the 26th and the 30th of October the Festival dedicated its program to a very special audience: children. About 400 kids were able to enjoy Amal’s magic. The festival enabled them to learn about important values such as diversity, tolerance and respect using of film, games and dialog. Beforehand, the Festival gave teaching material about the recent Arab world reality to the schools in order to improve the knowledge of the pupils before attending the screenigs.

En sesiones de dos horas, se proyectaron tres cortometrajes entre los que se intercalaron actuaciones de cuentacuentos, para ayudar a los niños, de un modo ameno y divertido, a aprender jugando. Tres historias con temáticas muy diferentes: Hiyab, dirigido en 2005 por el español Xavi Salas, que trata el controvertido tema del uso del velo en los colegios, y dos cortometrajes producidos en 2008 por Al Jazeera Children Channel, dos historias con un marcado afán didáctico, protagonizadas por animales: Mazen y la Hormiga del libanés Borhane Alaouié y Mi humilde historia, dirigida por el palestino-canadiense Izidore K. Musallah. _In two-hour sessions, three short films were shown. Between the projections children were able to listen to a storyteller, who introduced Arab culture in a playful and funny way. Three stories, each with a different context, were screed: Hiyab, directed in 2005 by the Spanish filmmaker Xavi Salas. It deals with the controversial topic of the use of the veil in schools. The two other educational films, with their clear didactic intention, were produced by the Al Jazeera Children Channel in 2008. The main roles in both movies are animals: Mazen and the Ant by Lebanese director Borhane Alaouié and My Simple Story, directed by the Palestinian-Canadian Izidore K. Musallah.

El Ciclo de Cine Egipcio, organizado por Casa Árabe, fue presentado en Santiago de Compostela dentro del Festival Amal. El Ciclo contó con una fabulosa selección de películas de los años dorados del cine egipcio, las décadas de los treinta y cuarenta del pasado siglo. Los amantes del cine clásico pudieron disfrutar de una programación que en contadas ocasiones ha sido exhibida en Europa. Cinco películas que marcaron el discurso de obras posteriores. _First Steps of Egiptian Cinema, curated by Casa Árabe took part in Santiago de Compostela during Amal Festival. The Season presented a fabulous selection of films from the golden age of Egyptian Cinema, the decades of the 30s and 40s of the last century. Spectators interested in classical films were able to enjoy the program which has been shown few times in Europe. Five films which marked the discourse of foregoing works, much closer to the omnipresent NorthAmerican classics than one would imagine.

Una exquisita selección que recogió los primeros pasos del musical, el género social, melodramas, películas de animación y comedias, géneros que cosecharon amplios éxitos en décadas posteriores. _ The section concerns an exquisite selection which reintroduces elements of the first steps of musical, the social genre, melodrama, animations and comedies, genres which were very successful in foregoing decades.

En los años 30, los hermanos Frenkel empezaron a producir sus primeras películas de animación, lo que los convirtió en pioneros de este género en Egipto. El protagonista de sus historias casi siempre es el mismo: un ratón aventurero de nombre Mish Mish Effendi.

Galal Effendi, el hijo de un empobrecido aristócrata, se ve obligado a dejar sus estudios para buscar trabajo. Tras un breve periodo como vendedor, Galal descubre su talento artístico y logra un gran éxito como cantante.

Cuando pierde su fortuna, un rico mercader se ve obligado a vender a su esclava, de la que está locamente enamorado. Pero el destino quiere que los dos amantes se reencuentren… Esta película consagró al musical como el género predilecto del cine egipcio.

In the 30s, the Frenkel brothers began with the production of their first animated films, which made them pioneers of this genre in Egypt. The main character of their stories remains mostly the same: an adventurous mouse named Mish Mish Effendi.

Galal Effendi, the son of an impoverished aristocrat, is forced to abandon his education to find a job. After a brief stint as a salesman, Galal discovers his artistic talent and achieves great success as a singer.

When he loses his fortune, a rich merchant is forced to sell his slave, which he is deeply in love with. Nevertheless, fate wants the two lovers to reunite... This film devoted the musical as the favourite genre of Egyptian cinema.

Salama is the most honest man of all Cairo and works in a fabric store. After several misunderstandings, he is accused of stealing a large amount of money from the store.

A famous singer retires in order to marry the love of her life, but unfortunately, he is assassinated the following day. Shattered by grief, she wants revenge and decides to seduce the suspect.

CONCURSO AMAL EXPRESS_AMAL EXPRESS CHALLENGE

La séptima edición de Amal presentó una nueva sección que se convirtió en una cita con la creatividad, la innovación y la experimentación para promover la cultura digital a través del cine. Amal Express buscaba una respuesta rápida y creativa, planteando un reto a realizadores de todo el mundo: la realización de un cortometraje, de una duración máxima de 5 minutos, en un tiempo Express: 96 horas. _ The seventh edition of Amal presented a new section which aimed the creation of a place for creativity, innovation and experimentation and the support of digital culture through films. Amal Express was looking for an immediate and creative answer, offering a challenge to filmakers from all over the world: the shooting of a short film with duration up to 5 minutes, in a very short period of time: 96 hours.

El viernes 23 se comunicó en la web del Festival la palabra clave sobre la que tenían que versar los cortometrajes participantes y ésta fue, por supuesto, ‘esperanza’. A partir de aquí empezó la cuenta atrás: quedaban noventa y seis horas hasta el 27 de Octubre para realizar, montar y subir los cortos participantes a la página web. _ On Friday 23rd the web page of the Festival announced the keyword defining the content of the productions: hope. Since this moment of publication the countdown had started: the directors had 96 hours to produce, edit and upload their work to participate in the challenge which closed Tuesday 27th of October.

Resultó ganador un trabajo enviado desde Turquía, La Báscula. El premio fue anunciado en la Gala de Clausura del Festival. _ The winner was the film Scales which was sent from Turkey. It was announced in the closing ceremony of the Festival.

Más de 600 personas visitaron la muestra Artistas Árabes procedente de los Fondos de la Fundación Araguaney, una sugerente selección con trabajos de algunos de los más fascinantes artistas árabes contemporáneos. Se pudieron ver obras de Hanoos, Saad Alí, Jaber Alwan, Khaled Kaki, A. Karim Sadoon, Ahmad Al Shihabi, Abdulrahman Abdulgahani, Alí Alí, Ali Muqawas, Ahmad Hamoud y Saeid Khavarnejad. _ More than 600 visitors came to see the exhibition Arab Artists, selected of the Funds of the Araguaney Foundation. It shows an inspiring selection consisting of some of the most fascinating works of contemporary Arab artists. The exhibition included the works of artists such as Hanoos, Saad Alí, Jaber Alwan, Khaled Kaki, A. Karim Sadoon, Ahmad Al Shihabi, Abdulrahman Abdulgahani, Alí Alí, Ali Muqawas, Ahmad Hamoud and Saeid Khavarnejad.

La muestra representó un claro ejemplo del discurso intercultural que preside la filosofía de Amal, invitando a un público ávido de ideas innovadoras a un recorrido lleno de matices, formas y colores. _ It represented a significant example of intercultural discourse, which is one of the main goals of the Festival and forms part of its philosophy. Therefore the organizers invited the interested audience to get inspired by innovative paintings full of stencils, forms and colours.

SEMANA GASTRONÓMICA ÁRABE _ARAB GASTRONOMIC WEEK

El restaurante Caney ofreció una exquisita selección de platos tradicionales de la cocina árabe. _Caney restaurant offered a delicious selection of traditional Arab menus.

La Semana Gastronómica Árabe supone una experiencia perfecta para satisfacer a los paladares curiosos y también para ampliar vocabulario: babaghanus, fattush, mahashi, muhallabia, kinafa... nombres exóticos que forman parte de una carta repleta de delicias culinarias. _The Arab Gastronomic Week is a perfect opportunity to satisfy curious palates. It also helps to improve Arab vocabulary: baba ghanoush, fattoush, mahashi, muhallabia, kinafa…exotic names which form part of a menu of culinary delicacies.

Estas jornadas suponen una cita ya tradicional y un año más, han contado con una acogida muy favorable. Cada plato de la cocina tradicional resulta una incomparable experiencia para el paladar, por su amplia variedad de sabores y aromas. Una apetitosa propuesta con la que cientos de clientes del restaurante Caney pudieron acercarse también a la cultura árabe. _ The Arab Gastronomic week became a traditional part of the Festival and once more there has been well-attended. Every dish is an incomparable experience for the palate; the wide variety of tastes and aromas allow us to experience Arab history from the beginnings until today.

COLOQUIOS _TALKS

Amal es diálogo: tanto el que se establece entre el espectador y la pantalla como el diálogo que los espectadores entablan con los invitados finalizada la proyección. Estos coloquios confirman la necesidad de conocimiento e información que hay por parte del público de Amal. _ Amal means dialog: the dialog which arises between the spectator and the screen as well as the interaction between spectators and guests which took place after the screaning of the films. These talks confirm the necessity of information and understanding on the part of the audience of Amal.

Un total de catorce invitados participaron en coloquios con el público después del pase de las películas. Es un espacio reservado para que los espectadores comenten, opinen, debatan y pregunten acerca de las películas que acababan de ver, aprovechando una oportunidad única para conocer, de primera mano, la visión de los creadores. Estos fueron los coloquios que se celebraron entre el 23 y el 30 de octubre: _ A total of fourteen guests participated in the talks with the audience which took place after the screening of the films or documentaries. This period of time was used to comment, discuss and ask questions about the foregoing films. Thereby the audience was able to use the unique and direct opportunity to get to know the opinion of the creators. Licenciado por la Universidad de Moscú en Tv y Cine documental. Autor de reconocidas y numerosas publicaciones dentro del ámbito cinematográfico. EDUARDO GALÁN Crítico de cine. Licenciado en Geografía y Historia, especialidad de Historia del Arte. Autor de numerosos libros y artículos de cine. Trabajó desde 1989 como director y guionista de programas de información cinematográfica de la Televisión de Galicia, cadena en la que fue responsable de la programación de cine desde 1990 hasta 2009. Fue director de Programación de la TVG entre 2006 y 2009.

_Film Critic. Graduated in History and Geography, specialized in Art History. Author of several books and articles about film. In 1989, he worked as director and scriptwriter of shows for the Galician TV. From 1990 to 2009 he was responsible for the cinema scheduling at the same TV channel. He was the programing Director of TVG between 2006 and 2009.

GALA DE ENTREGA DE PREMIOS _CLOSING CEREMONY

El Festival fue clausurado el sábado 31 de octubre en el Teatro Principal compostelano, en el transcurso de la Gala se dieron a conocer los ganadores de la séptima edición de Amal. El evento se convirtió en una fiesta que puso fin a una semana de cine, diálogo y tolerancia. Los premiados, numerosos representantes institucionales, autoridades, miembros del jurado, directores, medios de comunicación y numero público, estuvieron presentes en el evento, que fue amenizado por la actuación del músico franco-argelino Fayçal Salhi. _The Festival ended Saturday 31st of October in the Teatro Principal of Santiago de Compostela. During the gala performance the winners of the 7th edition of Amal were announced. The event formed the closing ceremony of a whole week of cinema, dialog and tolerance. The winners and nominated, numerous representatives of institutions, authorities, members of the jury, directors and representatives of the media participated in the ceremony, which was entertained by the French-Algerian musician Fayçal Salhi.

TROFEO AMAL _AMAL TROPHY

Acisclo Manzano es uno de los escultores gallegos más aclamados de su generación. Premiado en numerosas ocasiones y con una interesante trayectoria internacional, su obra está presente en prestigiosas colecciones públicas y privadas. El escultor, miembro de la Academia Gallega de Bellas Artes, es el autor del trofeo que se entregó a los ganadores de Amal. Cada premio es una obra de arte en bronce, creada para conmemorar el diálogo y la esperanza que presiden el espíritu del Festival. _Acisclo Manzano is one of the most acclaimed sculptors of his generation. Awarded several times and with an interesting international career, his work is exhibited in the most prestigious public and private collections. The sculptor, member of the Galician Academy of Fine Arts, is the author of the trophy which awards the winners of Amal. Each prize is a bronze piece of art created to commemorate dialog and hope that define the festival’s spirit.

Cabe tener en cuenta que los dos primeros días (viernes 23 y sábado 24) se proyectaron únicamente largometrajes documentales; mientras que el domingo 25 se proyectó también el primer largometraje de ficción a concurso. _Analyzing the data we have to keep in mind that the first two days (Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th) only two documentaries were screened. On Sunday 25th, besides that, a feature film, which formed part of the challenge, was screened.

Del lunes 26 al viernes 30 los espectadores pudieron disfrutar de cinco pases diarios, entre cortometrajes, largometrajes de ficción, documentales, películas del Ciclo Los primeros pasos de cine Egipcio y la sesión matinal del Ciclo de cine infantil. From Monday 26th to Friday 30th the spectators could visit up to fife presentations per day: short films, feature films, documentaries, films from the series of Egyptian cinema and the morning films of the series of the workshops for children.

El sábado día 31 tuvo lugar la Gala de Clausura en el Teatro Principal, durante la misma, se entregaron los premios a las películas ganadoras y los asistentes pudieron disfrutar de la actuación del músico franco-argelino Fayçal Salhi. _Saturday 31st the closing ceremony took place in the Teatro Principal which was completely occupied. In the ceremony the prizes to the winning films and actors were presented and the audience was entertained by the FrenchAlgerian musician Fayçal Salhi.

La asistencia de espectadores fue muy regular a lo largo de los ocho días de proyecciones, con una media de 508 espectadores por día, frente a los 474 espectadores de media de la sexta edición de Amal, lo que supone un incremento medio en la asistencia de un 7 % respecto al 2008. A pesar de que la edición de 2009 ha durado dos días más que la del año anterior, los espectadores por día no han descendido, dato que refleja el interés que cada año genera Amal entre el público de Compostela. _During the eight days of projections the average participation kept regularly with a number of 508 spectators per day compared to the 474 spectators in the sixth edition of Amal. The data shows a significant increase of 7%. Although the seventh edition of Amal lasted two days longer than the previous edition, the average number of spectators per day still increased. This movement demonstrates the growing interest on the part of the audience in Compostela.

Se observa una mayoría de espectadores en la sesión de largometrajes de ficción, con un 45% del total, seguido por la sesión de documentales, con un 28%, el Ciclo de Cine Infantil con un 16%, los cortometrajes con un 7%, y, por último, Ciclo Los primeros pasos del cine Egipcio con un 4%. _The data demonstrates that the majority of spectators came to visit the screeningsof feature fiction films with a total number of 45% followed by documentaries with 28%, the workshops for chidren with 16%, the short films with 7% and the series of the First Steps of Egyptian Cinema with 4%.

En comparación con la pasada edición de Amal, se produce un incremento en el número de espectadores en los documentales (24% en Amal 2008). Cabe resaltar que, además, el premio del público este año fue otorgado a la película documental Al Nakba. _Compared to the foregoing edition of Amal we have to recognize the significant increase of the total number of spectators in the screenings of documentaries (24% in Amal 2008). This year, the documentation Al Nakba won the Audience Award of Amal, a fact that underlines the foregoing movement.

ESPECTADORES POR GÉNERO _SPECTATORS PER GENRE

La gran presencia de mujeres cineastas y de películas sobre el papel de la mujer en el mundo árabe en el programa de la séptima edición de Amal, provocó la inclusión de una estadística sobre el sexo de los espectadores asistentes. Se observa una mayoría de espectadoras (61%) en todas las categorías. La diferencia se manifiesta especialmente en las proyecciones del Ciclo Los primeros pasos de cine Egipcio; en las que cerca de tres cuartas partes de los asistentes eran de sexo femenino. _The high number of female directors and the films about the role of women in the Arab world in the program of the seventh edition of Amal provoked the inclusion of data about the sex of the spectator in Amal 2009. The diagram shows a majority of female spectators (61%) in all categories. Regarding the series of the First Steps of Egyptian Cinema the difference is even more significant. Almost three thirds of the audience were formed by women.

Comparando los datos con el año anterior observamos que a lo largo del mes de octubre se iniciaron 12.829 sesiones (frente a las 11.450 del año anterior), hubo más de 276.606 accesos (frente a los 243.202 del año anterior) y se visitaron más de 123.124 páginas (frente a las de 116.584 del año 2008); por lo tanto, se registra un incremento del tráfico de la web y del número de visitas. _The following diagram presents the daily numbers of access to the web page of Amal during the month of October. Podemos observar un crecimiento en las sesiones en el período comprendido entre el 18 y el 25 de Octubre, es decir, en la semana previa al festival; coincidiendo con las acciones publicitarias y de comunicación más importantes. Además, subió el número de visiones durante los días de las proyecciones, especialmente al principio del festival coincidiendo con la apertura del plazo de participación en el concurso on-line Amal Express. _The data demonstrates an increase in the sessions in the period between the 18th and the 25th of October, referring to the week before the Festival, with the most important advertising activities and spreading of information. Furthermore we analyze an increase of visitors during the days of the projections, especially at the beginning of the Festival coinciding with the online challenge Amal Express.

VISITAS _ACTIVITY OF VISITORS El promedio de tiempo que permanecen los usuarios en la web oscila entre los 4 y 6 minutos. Además de España, hay muchos usuarios de otros países que acceden a la web como Estados Unidos y Europa entre los que destaca Francia. En cuanto a países árabes, los que más veces han visitado la web son Arabia Saudí, Jordania y Marruecos. _The average time of access of the online users took about 4 to 6 minutes. Besides the Spanish users there are a lot of internet users from foreign countries which visit the web pages of the Festival such as citizens of the United States and Europe, especially from France. Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Morocco are the countries which show the highest online activity among the Arab countries.

PELÍCULAS _FILMS En la Sección Oficial se proyectaron un total de 42 películas entre cortometrajes, largometrajes, documentales, el Ciclo de Los primeros pasos de cine egipcio y el Ciclo de cine infantil. Vemos que prácticamente un tercio de los trabajos proyectados fueron producidos en Palestina. También observamos que un 14% de las películas son coproducciones y otro 14% son producciones españolas. Cabe destacar la participación de Qatar que sigue con un porcentaje de 11%. _The data shows that almost a third of the works which were projected were produced in Palestine. We also recognize that 14% of the films are co-productions and other 14% are Spanish productions. Another significant data forms the participation of Qatar with 11% of the total of films.

ESTRENOS _PREMIÈRE El programa de Amal destaca por mostrar un cine independiente, no accesible desde los circuitos comerciales, la mayor parte de los trabajos fueron estrenos. _Amal represents independent cinema without commercial interest; therefore most of the works were premières.

En este gráfico podemos observar que un 67% de las películas de Amal 2009 fueron estreno en España. EXPOSICIÓN _EXHIBITION

Junto al programa cinematográfico de Amal 2009 se presentó como actividad paralela la Exposición Artistas Árabes, Fondos Fundación Araguaney. Desde el 20 al 31 de Octubre se pudo visitar esta Exposición de arte árabe contemporáneo en la sala de exposiciones del Hotel Meliá Araguaney. La muestra contó con una gran acogida de público. Fueron muchos los que durante eses días se acercaron a visitarla, un total de 630 visitantes. El número más alto se registró el miércoles 28. _The cinematographic program of Amal has been accompanied by parallel activities such as the exhibition Artistas Árabes, Fondos Fundación Araguaney. Between the 20th and 31st October, interested guests could visit the exhibition of contemporary Arab art, taking place in the Hall of Exhibitions of the Araguaney Meliá Hotel. The exhibition could count with a huge audience. A total of 630 people came to see the works of art. The highest number of visitors per day can be recorded for Wednesday 28th.

En Amal 2009 hubo diferentes tipos de entradas: Los largometrajes de ficción y documentales contaron con una entrada tipo de 2 euros por sesión; mientras que los cortometrajes costaron 1 euro por sesión. A su vez estuvo a disposición de los clientes un bono especial a un coste de 15 euros con el que se permitió el acceso a 10 sesiones. En el siguiente gráfico se recoge el número de espectadores que acudieron al Festival Amal, distinguidos por tipo de entrada: _There have been various types of entrance tickets to Amal 2009. In order to watch the fiction films and documentaries spectators could buy a ticket for 2 Euros for one session, whereas the entrance ticket to the short films cost one Euro per session. Furthermore the spectators had the possibility to get a special bonus paying 15 Euros for 10 sessions. Una página moderna y dinámica que permite al usuario acceder a los contenidos de una manera fácil e inmediata. _ The seventh edition of Amal distinguishes itself with a new web page of the Festival. Thereby online users are able to interact with us during the whole year. Amal presents a modern and dynamic page which allows the user the immediate and easy access to various contents. Por primera vez, se pudieron visionar a través de la página web los cortometrajes participantes en Amal 09. Internet constituye un vehículo excepcional para la difusión del talento de los jóvenes creadores en todo el mundo, permitiendo la difusión de las películas entre aquellos espectadores que no pudieron asistir a las proyecciones en Santiago de Compostela. _For the first time the user is able to watch the participating short films on the web page. The internet represents a remarkable medium to spread information about young talented creators all over the world. INSTITUTO CERVANTES _CERVANTES INSTITUTE Uno de los primeros resultados visibles de esta colaboración fue el ciclo de cine Estrecho, los límites de la frontera que tuvo lugar en los centros que el Instituto Cervantes tiene en Marruecos, con el fin de ofrecer al público marroquí una visión del cine producido en España sobre la inmigración. _One of the first significant results of the collaboration was the series of Cine Estrecho, the limits of the border which took place in the foreign centers of the Cervantes Institute in Morocco. The presentation aimed at the promotion of Spanish productions about immigration in Morocco. The agreement functions as a framework of collaboration in order to encourage Spanish cinema and the Spanish language outside the borders of Spain.

In the Festival the film Refugiados de por vida (Refugees for life) directed by Hady Zaccack will be screened. It is one of the films which participated in Amal 2007.

El Festival dos Abrazos es una muestra de creación contemporánea gallega e internacional organizada por la Concejalía de Cultura y Centros Socioculturales del Ayuntamiento de Santiago de Compostela, que ofrece una nueva mirada sobre los espacios singulares de la ciudad. El Festival se celebró durante el mes de Agosto y estuvo formado por cerca de 150 actividades y contó con la participación de la Fundación Araguaney y del Festival Amal. _The Festival dos Abrazos shows International and contemporary Galician creations of art. It is organized by the Council of Culture and Socio-Cultural Centers of Santiago de Compostela and gives access to a new perspective of single spaces of the city. The festival is celebrated during the month of August and includes about 150 activities. It counts with the participation of the Araguaney Foundation and the Festival Amal.

Espazos Sonoros es un ciclo de conciertos organizados por la Consellería de Cultura de la Xunta de Galicia que se desarrollan por toda la geografía gallega. El Festival Amal colaboró organizando el concierto del grupo palestino Le Trio Joubran que se celebró en la Iglesia de la Universidad en Santiago de Compostela. Al día siguiente del concierto se proyectó en la Fundación Araguaney con gran acogida de público, la película Improvisación (participante en Amal) que tiene como protagonistas a los miembros del trío. _Espazos Sonoros is a serie of concerts organized by the Council of Culture of the Xunta de Galicia which takes place in various venues all over Galicia. The Amal Festival organized the concert of the Palestinian band Le Trio Joubran. The event was celebrated in the church of the University of Santiago de Compostela. The day after the concert, the Araguaney Foundation screened the film Improvisación (part of the official section of Amal 200-) which has among its protagonists the same band Le Trio Joubran.

GAZA EL BLOQUEO FÍSICO Y EL BLOQUEO DE LA INFORMACIÓN_GAZA ABOUT THE PHYSICAL BLOCKADE AND THE INFORMATION BLOCKADE IN THE AREA

El 24 de enero, Alberto Arce impartió una conferencia sobre el bloqueo físico y de información que sufre Gaza. El periodista y director de documentales fue el único periodista español que, violando el bloqueo israelí, consiguió entrar en la zona en 2008. La conferencia que impartió en el Salón de Convenciones del Hotel Meliá Araguaney, versó sobre sus experiencias y mostró una nueva mirada sobre el conflicto. Allí, avanzó imágenes de su nuevo trabajo en proceso de montaje. _On 24th of January Alberto Arce gave a conference about the physical and informational blockade from which Gaza is suffering. The journalist and director of documentaries is the only Spanish representative who was able to enter the crisis zone in 2008. The conference was hold in the Hall of Conventions of the Meliá Araguaney Hotel. He speaks about his experiences and offers a new perspective towards the conflict.

En el ámbito didáctico Amal también apoya los proyectos destinados a favorecer el estudio de los países árabes. Es por esto que desde el Festival se facilita a los centros educativos que lo requieran material formativo. Este es el caso del IES de Valga al que se le cedió el pase de las películas Make a wish, Engaiolados, Niños que nunca existieron y Tiro Libre, para poder proyectarlas como apoyo curricular en el desarrollo de la materia de Ciencias Sociales. _Concerning the field of didactics, Amal constantly tries to support projects which aim at the circulation of knowledge about the Arab world. Therefore we offer didactic material to interested educational institutions. One of these institutes is the IES in Valga where the films Make a wish, Engaiolados, Niños que nunca existieron and Tiro Libre were screened.

FESTIVAL DE CINE DE TARIFA _FILM FESTIVAL IN TARIFA La visita del Amal al Festival de Cine Africano de Tarifa nos acerca a apenas 14 km de mundo árabe y a una mirada diferente a las diferentes Áfricas a través del Cine. Este acercamiento entre los dos Festivales tuvo como fruto la proyección del Ciclo de Cine: Los Primeros pasos del Cine Egipcio donde también colaboró Casa Árabe, dentro de las actividades paralelas del Festival Amal 2009. _The trip of Amal to the Festival de Cine Africano of Tarifa brought us very close (14km) to the Arab world and offered a new perspective of the different presentations of Africa through Cinema. The meeting of both Festivals had as a product the projection of series of Cinema: The First Steps of Egypt Cinema, which formed part of the parallel activities of the Amal Festival 2009.

FESTIVAL DE CINE DE QATAR _FILM FESTIVAL IN QATAR El Festival Amal fue invitado este año al Festival Internacional de Cine Documental de Aljazzera en Qatar. Esta visita tiene lugar un año más tarde de que el Presidente de la Fundación Araguaney-Puente de Culturas, Ghaleb Jaber Ibrahim formase parte del jurado de este festival. Sin duda, el Festival de Qatar se ha convertido en el referente del Cine Documental, no sólo en el mundo árabe sino internacionalmente, gracias a su gran programación. _This year the Amal Festival was invited to join the International Festival of documentary Cinema of Aljazzera in Qatar. The visit took place one year after the President of the Foundation had become member of the jury of the Festival. Without a doubt the Festival of Qatar became an important reference of documentary Cinema. Because of the enormous programming it is famous not only in the Arab world but also internationally.

FESTIVAL DE CINE DE DUBAI _FILM FESTIVAL IN DUBAI En mitad del mundo árabe se levanta un Oasis de Cristal, Dubai. El fenómeno que representa este pequeño Emirato repercute en todo el Mundo al igual que su Festival de Cine. El Festival Amal asistió este año al Festival Internacional de Cine de Dubai, donde se reúne lo más destacado del panorama cinematográfico internacional, entre los que pudimos encontrar algunos representantes del mundo del cine árabe. _In the middle of the Arab world an oasis of glass emerges from the ground, Dubai. The phenomenon which represents the small emirate influences the world in the same way than the Film Festival. This year the Amal Festival participated in the International Film Festival in Dubai, where the most important perople of the international cinematographic world meet. Among them we could find various representatives of Arab Cinema.

En 2010 se celebrará el segundo Año Santo del XXI, que traerá a Santiago de Compostela un gran número de visitantes. _In 2010 the second Año Santo of the XX century is celebrated and brings a great number of visitors to Santiago de Compostela.

El Xacobeo 2010 se caracterizará por la integración y el uso de las Nuevas Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación tanto al servicio de la promoción y difusión de contenidos como de la asistencia al peregrino antes, durante y después del Camino. _The so called Xacobeo 2010 emphasizes the integration and the use of new technologies of information and communication, the service of promotion and diffusion of contends as well as the assistance towards the pilgrim before, during and after the pilgrimage.

Aprovechando la ocasión, desde Amal queremos ofrecer una VIII Edición con una programación especial para un público llegado de los cinco continentes. Amal pone toda su esperanza en ampliar cada año la difusión y relevancia del Festival. El gran éxito de acogida por parte del público de esta VII Edición nos hace optimistas. Esperamos con Amal 2010 llegar a un mayor número de espectadores y poder ampliar y mejorar la oferta cultural._ _Regarding to the event, the eighth edition of Amal will present a special program to the audience of all five continents. Amal continuously tries to improve the spreading of information and knowledge about the Festival. The general acceptance on the part of the audience in the seventh edition of Amal strengths our optimism for coming editions. We are confident to expect a higher number of spectators in Amal 2010. Therefore we will expand the cultural program offering various new activities.

El Festival se esfuerza para subtitular todas las películas al castellano, ampliando las posibilidades de los cineastas a la hora de difundir sus trabajos, abriendo ante ellos un nuevo camino: los países de habla hispana. _The Festival aims at subtitling each film with Spanish subtitles; thereby we improve the facility of circulation of the films. This way the works can be watched by a higher number of spectators including all Spanish speaking countries.

Con el objetivo de seguir creando puentes, Amal ampliará las colaboraciones con otros Festivales y Entidades en el próximo año 2010. A través de las Muestras Amal, una selección de las mejores películas viajarán por diferentes países con el objetivo de mostrar la diversidad y multiculturalidad de los países árabes. Buenos Aires, Nablus, Belén, Vigo, Madrid…serán algunos de los escenarios que acogerán las Muestras. _Aiming at the creation of intercultural bridges Amal will improve and expand the collaboration with other Festivals and institutions in 2010. A selection of the best films will be presented in various countries. Thereby Amal aims at the circulation of its message: to show the diversity and multiculturalism in the Arab world. Buenos Aires, Nablus, Belén, Vigo, Madrid…will be some of the settings for the presentations.

La edición de Amal 2010 será muy especial; además de aumentar el número de días de proyección y el número de películas que se podrán ver; se ampliará la variedad temática, acogiendo una Muestra de Cine Latinoamericano; acercando también los países del otro lado del charco al público de Compostela. _The eighth edition of Amal will be a very special one; besides the increase of the days of screenigs and the number of films which can be watched, we want to offer a wider variety of topics including the presentation of Hispano-American cinema in order to reach a new audience from over the pond.

El fomento del diálogo intercultural es uno de los principales objetivos de la fundación Araguaney-Puente de Culturas y lo ha sido también de Amal a lo largo de sus siete ediciones: la comunicación que se establece entre el mundo árabe y occidente a través del cine, los coloquios entre los invitados y el público asistente a las proyecciones y las reuniones profesionales que tienen lugar durante la Semana Oficial del Festival son algunos ejemplos significativos. _ The support of intercultural dialog is one of the principal aims of the Araguaney Foundation - Bridge of Cultures. The dialog was also aim of the Festival Amal during the foregoing seven editions of Amal: The communication through cinema, established between the Arab and the occidental world, the colloquiums between the guests and the audience which participated in the presentations, the professional meetings which took place during the official week of the Festival…they are all examples representing these aims.

El diálogo también presidió la estrategia de comunicación de la edición de 2009 del Festival, organizando ruedas de prensa y encuentros entre periodistas e invitados. Además, profesionales internacionales de distintos medios de comunicación (televisión, periódicos, páginas web) fueron invitados a conocer las actividades del Festival. _The dialog also represents the strategy of communication of the latest edition of the Festival Amal 2009.
