Hike, Los Angeles 2019 - Polina Miliou The installation simulates a hike. The visitor is disoriented by a seamlessly distributed space fog, losing the scale of the space. They awkwardly wander on and around rocks, that are covered by a layer of thick fog. Surprise and uncertainty emerge when stumbling and walking on the rocks they can’t really spot in advance. The project also raises the matter of fear of having physical contact with an art piece, by having the rocks (clay sculptures) to be walked on, almost inevitably. Installation of clay rocks, dry ice machine (4 smoke layer) and fog machine (50% room fog opacity). The installation either includes natural light or a central strong source of diffused white light.

Prints accompanied with corresponding images are displayed in a sequence creating an itinerary for the viewer. The peaceful walk is interrupted but also constructed by instant jokes and realizations about life. The environment is dreamy and nostalgic while holographic sunbeams follow the visitors on their route. Each statement to be displayed in a white 8’’ x 10’’ picture frame. Translucent holographic film attached in all window glass panels. Current number of statements: 22.

Light projection experiments, Los Angeles, 2018 - Polina Miliou
The installation is an experience where the visitor can move in a dark space that is surrounding a cylindrical object. This object is highlighted by a moving spotlight. The translucent holographic material of this structure filters, reflects and deconstructs the light, creating colorful shades around it. The viewer can actively walk around this new space, observing the interactive light the cylinder has become or can bend over to enter it and observe the space outside, filtered through the object. There is a relationship of the inside versus outside in a constantly changing space. Installation includes: suspended 7’ diameter cylindrical structure and LED spotlight installation. Structure consisting of a 3.5’ wide holographic film and two steel rings of 7’ diameter.

Maltman Renovation, Los Angeles 2018 - LApazDB
Lead Designer: Polina Miliou Project Status: Under Construction Project Type: Renovation, Addition Description: Renovation of existing apartment building. Addition of rooftop pavilion and addition of planted rope screens as a means of spatial separation. The concept design is based on the parasite (vines) that is emerging from the new structure, expands to the existing building and creates new green spaces. The vegetation additionally determines the public circulation of the building and simultaneously offers privacy, as it hides and separates the apartments’ entrances from the communal spaces.

Lead Designer: Jeffrey Allsbrook Design Team: Alex Sheft, Polina Miliou, Jihun Son Project Type: Retail Project Status: Under Construction Description: The interior of the new Intelligentsia Coffee is inspired by the dark old-school Hollywood bars as well as the DeLongpre garden that
was once the main attraction in the location. The main elements are the colorful vines, the dark wood interiors and the vaulted ceilings finished with colorful 1’’x1’’ mosaic tiles, mixed pattern.

Dispensary, West Hollywood 2018 - Standard Lead Designer: Jeffrey Allsbrook Design Team: Alex Sheft, Polina Miliou, Jihun Son, Helena Melgar Project Type: Retail Project Status: West Hollywood Dispensary Application Approved, project currently in construction drawings
The interior of the dispensary is conceived as an indoor market, where the flower and the edibles are displayed like produce and food. While traditional dispensaries offer a more rigid experience, the design of Essence’s dispensary focuses on guided self-exploration. Each item is located in a display that is unique to the product typology.
The consumption lounge is a flexible event venue with an immersive AV system that transforms the space for various special events, yoga, art classes, lectures and panel discussions. The programming of the screens creates different views through the “windows.”

Urban Block 50X60, transformation of the athenian tile, Athens 2015 thesis project at National Technical University of Athens
Team: Polina Miliou, Mano Zugouri Supervisors: Stavros Stavridis, Andreas Kourkoulas Project Type: Thesis project, Urbanism Description: Athens has been a subject of multiple discussions and projects, with issues that haven’t been justified or came to a solution in so many years. After participating and studying on those discussions we started a thorough research on downtown Athens and its social and spatial characteristics. This evolved to the development of a manual, or a game, for architects to follow to intervene in any typical urban block in Athens and by following the rules, resolve ongoing problems or highlight positive and unique characteristics of the neighborhood. The whole project ended up in 3 case studies of 3 actual but random blocks in the city. These proved that despite the particularity of the rules, every designer can create a unique space that reflects their personal imagination.
Team: Polina Miliou, Mano Zugouri Description: Piano park is a proposal for a new park in downtown Athens. The area is currently occupied by an outdoor market, while most of the available space is abandoned and unused. The idea is that we divide the park in 6 zones and we raise the edges of these zones creating “wings”.
The main circulation is the connection of the levels of these zones, that follow the natural contouring. Under the “wings”, we place the existing market, as well as high vegetation that grows over the level of the wings.

Materials proposed include concrete for the market level, the structural columns as well as any outdoor seating and rammed earth for the upper level of the park, color brick-red.

Mezzanine scheme that proposes a variety of studio types. A coffee shop, communal tables studio, library style study, lounge style study and a rooftop. All mezzanines communicate with each other visually and are connected through a circulation that unfolds at the perimeter of the building.
