K-pop girl group Blackpink's Lisa has broken two Guinness World Records with her solo debut Lalisa, the organisation announced last Friday (Oct 8). Lalisa, which was released on Sept 10, broke the world record for the most viewed YouTube music video by a solo artist in 24 hours. With an impressive 73.6 million views in its first 24 hours, Lalisa smashed the previous record of 65.2 million views set by pop star Taylor Swift's Me! in 2019. Lalisa also set a new record for the most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a solo K-pop artist. She beat her own bandmate Rose's solo debut track, On The Ground, which was released on March 12 and held the previous record of 41.6 million views in 24 hours. Lisa, 24, who is of Thai origin, is the third of the quartet to release a solo effort. She was praised by Thailand's prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for promoting Thai culture in her Lalisa music video last month. As a group, Blackpink have also held previous Guinness World Records titles including the most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours and the most viewed music video in 24 hours. However, their records were broken by fellow K-pop band BTS's hit single Dynamite last year. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network Source: https://www.thestar.com.my/lifestyle/entertainment/2021/10/11/blackpink039slisa-breaks-two-guinness-records-with-solo-debut-039lalisa039 9

Hotel bookings up, staff needed JOHOR BARU: Hotels in Johor are reporting good bookings following the opening up of interstate travel but are not able to cope with the overwhelming response. Malaysian Association of Hotels Johor Chapter chairman Ivan Teo said the main problem was shortage of staff as many were retrenched during the various movement control orders. He said hotels had no choice but to retrench their workers and those that chose to remain in business only kept a handful of staff. “Johor has enough hotel rooms for guests but lacks employees,’’ Teo said. He said hotel operators started recruiting new employees when Johor entered Phase Two under the National Recovery Plan (NRP) last month. Business was slowly picking up then. “There are so many retrenched hotel workers out there. We are lucky as we don’t have to hire newbies and train them from scratch,’’ added Teo. He said, however, that they still would have to undergo a refresher course as they were out of work for months, adding that the training would include Covid-19 SOP. Teo said Johor Premium Outlets (JPO), which opened after a four-month hiatus, would attract tourists from outside Johor who shop for branded goods at discounted pricing. “We are looking forward to the opening up of the borders between Malaysia and Singapore as it is key to Johor’s economy,’’ he said. Lotus Desaru Resort chief executive officer R. Indra Ghandi said the resort received 100% bookings from interstate travel but was only able to operate at 60% due to shortage of employees. “We have about 300 workers but the number is not enough. For buffet breakfast alone we have to serve about 1,400 guests,’’ she said. Indra said breakfast would be in two halls with only 50% capacity allowed at any one time, adding that the peak period was from 7.30am to 9am. “We even have to get staff from other departments to help out,’’ she said. Indra said the resort needed about 100 more employees, including kitchen helpers, waiters, waitresses, housekeepers, gardeners and swimming pool lifeguards. “We advertised for job vacancies a week ago and only managed to hire three,’’ she said. Pulai Springs Resort general manager Sunny Soo said that it received between 25 and 35 confirmed room bookings daily during Phase Two of the NRP. “On Sunday, we received 66,’’ he said. Soo expected the number of bookings to go up in the coming days, for Deepavali in November and also Christmas. He added that unlike the pre-Covid-19 days, the resort now allowed its guests to order outside food using delivery services as only a limited number of guests were allowed to dine in. 'Squid Game' becomes Netflix's biggest-ever launch hit JLOS ANGELES: Dystopian South Korean drama "Squid Game" has become Netflix's most popular series launch ever, drawing 111 million fans since its debut less than four weeks ago, the streaming service said Tuesday. The unprecedented global viral hit imagines a macabre world in which marginalized people are pitted against one another in traditional children's games. While the victor can earn millions in cash, losing players are killed. Spreading around the world by word of mouth, especially via social media, "Squid Game" has topped Netflix charts in more than 80 countries. "Squid Game has officially reached 111 million fans -- making it our biggest series launch ever!" tweeted Netflix. By comparison, Regency romp "Bridgerton" reached 82 million households on debut, using Netflix's internal metric which includes any account that watched an episode for at least two minutes. The success of "Squid Game" amplifies South Korea's increasingly outsized influence on global popular culture, following the likes of K-pop band BTS and Oscar-winning movie "Parasite." It is also the latest success for Netflix's bid to produce more international and non-English language content. The streamer's third most-watched series debut for instance is French-language "Lupin." Netflix offers "Squid Game" in both dubbed and subtitled versions in multiple languages, expanding its potential audience. In February, the world's most popular streaming platform announced plans to spend $500 million this year alone on series and films produced in South Korea. -- AFP

Instruction: Identify the adverbs in the article below.

Graduate sisters turn to baking during the pandemic and hit the sweet spot! THERE'S something utterly engaging about the two smiling young women on the screen of my laptop. "Hiiii!" they chorus together, their grins wide. From the moment sisters Puravina and Loshinie Periasamy appear online, to the moment they enter a mind-melded comedy state, two and a half minutes have elapsed. There's barely time for hellos and niceties before they were regaling me with anecdotes about growing up together and mock fighting in front of me. "Could you type your names and ages on the chat box?" I try to slide my instructions in between the giggling. First things first: I've got to get their names right. Loshinie starts typing almost immediately while Puravina looks over her shoulder. "You're spelling my name wrong!" points out Puravina suddenly, before wailing: "Loshinieeee, you don't know how to spell my name or what?!" Then comes the giggling again. Ah, sisters. "Who's older?" I ask curiously. Puravina raises her hand. "By just one year!" she points out blithely. The girls aren't entirely unfamiliar to me. Those toothy wide grins are inherited from their mum, who used to be a schoolmate of mine a lifetime ago. We lost touch over the years, but eventually found each other once again, thanks in some measure to Facebook. "My daughters have started their own home-based business," wrote their mother on a women entrepreneurs networking platform one day. With the normal barriers to starting a business gone and the usual pressures of the marketplace scrambled, a wonderful, desperate creativity has flourished in her daughters' kitchen. Interest in baking surged during the Covid-19 pandemic, in part because it's a comforting activity that one can do alone without leaving the house. And as millions of young people found themselves marooned inside and at home, the sisters' newfound interest inevitably culminated into a homegrown business called Second Scoop Desserts. Whether furloughed, experiencing redundancy, working from home or simply re-evaluating career choices, Puravina and Loshinie decided this was the time to take the plunge. After all, their mother's faith in them was rock solid. "Their cheesecakes are really delicious," the older woman gushes. She's their biggest cheerleader, staunchest supporter, and fervent marketeer on social media.

Vietnam looking to build a million low-cost homes for workers and the poor AUTHORITIES in Vietnam's largest city Ho Chi Minh plan to build a million low-cost homes for workers and other poor residents. They said the new homes will replace old apartments in dilapidated neighbourhoods spread out in the sprawling city. The Vn Express reports Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee chairman Phan Van Mai saying that the city still had many cramped neighbourhoods where workers lived in small spaces. He said such neighbourhoods were used as rest stops after a long day at work before the pandemic but due to social distancing measures, people were confined within the narrow spaces for months and this had severely impacted people's mental and emotional health. "The city has received a large number of workers to build and develop the city, but we haven't invested in caring for them to the extent they deserve. We will do better in the future," Mai said. He said the city's recovery plan includes construction of low-cost homes for workers and other low-income people. Further details of the programme are expected to be revealed later this week. "The city will build homes at the lowest possible prices so they are accessible for workers and replace old apartments and houses near canals, improving the conditions of neighbourhoods," Mai said. Mai added that it would not be easy to cover everyone in a population of over 10 million in terms of pandemic relief measures. On the issue of schools, he said although prolonged online lessons were not very effective for primary school students, the city cannot take the risk and let them resume physical classes while the pandemic still raged on. He said the city had already requested the Ministry of Health to let children be vaccinated early, at least those most at risk, so they can return to school. The health ministry had said on Monday that it plans to release guidelines on Covid-19 vaccination for children aged 12 to 18 before Friday. The ministry's health experts are now discussing if the vaccinations should take place at schools or locality of residence. Health experts in Ho Chi Minh City had called for a plan to vaccinate children against Covid-19 as the city was planning to open schools in early 2022. In late August, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had also told the health and education ministries to plan for children and teens to be vaccinated so the new school year could begin safely. He had said the health ministry would need to determine which type of Covid-19 vaccine was frequently used by other countries to vaccinate children aged 12 and above and the education ministry should also collaborate in this effort. Many countries have already started vaccinating children and adolescents between 12 and 18 years while some countries have even given the jab to those aged 5 to 12. Vietnam now has about 25 million children. It has so far vaccinated 55 million against Covid-19 with at least one dose while about 16 million people have two doses.
