Porto is exceptional. In more ways than one. You will find it hard to leave. in: www.europeanbestdestinations.org

PORTO The city of Porto in Roman times was designated as Portus Cale and that was the origin of the name of Portugal. It was in Porto that King John I got married to the English princess D. Philippa of Lancaster. The city prides itself on being the birthplace of Prince Henry, the navigator. Porto played a key role in defending ideas of liberalism in the battles of the nineteenth century. Indeed, the courage with which the city withstood the famous Siege of Delhi during the civil war of 1832-34 earned Porto a unique title awarded by Queen Mary II - Invicta Cidade do Porto (the Unvanquished City of Porto). Since then Porto has often been referred to as the Invicta City. The city is widely visited by tourists, favouring landmakrs such as the Tower of Clerics, by Nasoni, and the Serralves Foundation Contemporary Art Museum. 28 | POLYTECHNIC OF PORTO

The Historic Centre has been classified as world Heritage by UNESCO. The coast (Foz) is another significant tourist area and it is considered by many the most beautiful area of town from where you can enjoy the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as a beautiful and romantic promenade. Today, the city of Porto receives over one million tourists per year and has become one of the most visited cities in Europe. Porto was the European Capital of Culture in 2001 ) and co-hosted the European Football Championship in 2004. This modern European city, known for its beauty, booming cultural agenda, and strong traditional roots, is the Portuguese Academic capital. Porto is also known for the friendly and cosmopolitan environment which helps to explain the large attraction of international students.

MATOSINHOS Matosinhos is one of the largest cities in the district of Porto. It is located in the north of Por足tugal, in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, next to the city of Porto, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. With a growing industrial development and one of the main tourist and commercial harbours in the country, the city still endeavours to preserve ancient folk traditions, to invest in higher education and to patron the arts. The municipality itself only dates back to 1867, whereas the town of Matosinhos was founded in 1853. Matosinhos became a city on June 28th, 1984.

Pテ天OA DE VARZIM Pテウvoa de Varzim is a Portuguese city in the Porto district. It has a population of roughly 65,000 residents. The urbanized area extends south to the neighboring city of Vila do Conde. The sunny coastline and beaches, the inviting promenade with delicious pastries and outdoor coffee-shops, the casino, the passion for football, carnival and enjoying life attracts both tourists, students, business and new residents.

VILA DO CONDE Vila do Conde is found in the Porto District and has about 30,000 inhabitants. Vila do Conde enjoys a rich architectonic heritage, exquisite gastronomy and an excellent cost of living. Like Porto, both tourists and residents can delight in both the Ave river banks and the Atlantic seashore. The surrounding cities are P贸voa de Varzim, Trofa, Maia and Matosinhos. It is also on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Vila do Conde is a major industrial centre, fishing port, beach and tourist area. It constitutes one of the leading and most sought bathing centres in the country. The city is part of the same urban agglomeration as P贸voa de Varzim.

POLYTECHNIC OF PORTO | 31

VILA NOVA DE GAIA The city of Vila Nova de Gaia is located on the south bank of the Douro River. The famous Port wine cellars are found there. The connection to the nearby city of Porto is particularly strong, as both cities share a common heritage: the Douro river and Port wine. The origin of Vila Nova de Gaia probably dates back to a Celtic citadel. When integrated into the Roman Empire, it was named Cale (or Gale). This name is most likely of Celtic origin, a development of “Gall,” which the Celts used to refer to themselves.

32 | POLYTECHNIC OF PORTO

The Douro River itself (Durus in Latin) is also Celtic, built from the Celtic “dwr”, which means water. During Roman times, the vast majority of the population lived on the south bank of the Douro. To the north, there was a small community built around the water Port. This is now Downtown Porto. The name of the city of Porto is said to come from “Portus Cale” (“Portus “in Latin and “Gale” in Celtic). The name of the two cities of Porto and Gaia was often mentioned in contemporary documents as “villa Portucale”, and the county of León around the town was called “Portucalense”. This county led to the future kingdom of Portugal.

FELGUEIRAS Felgueiras is located in the Porto District and has about 15,525 inhabitants. This country city is welcoming to visitors and students. The cost of living is quite appealing and the gastronomy acclaimed. The bustle of everyday life is typical of an entrepreneurial community but there is always time for a good glass of green wine and some rich egg pastry. Surrounding cities comprise Fafe, Celorico de Basto, Amarante, Lousada, Vizela and Guimar達es.
