CITRIS Health, an organization dedicated to advancing the well-being of older adults and family caregivers with enabling technology, recently launched “Lighthouse for Older Adults.” This project is offering one-onone training, in-language support and peerbased technical support to equip older adult residents of affordable housing communities with high-speed broadband access, user-friend ly devices and digital literacy training.

4 | SENIOR LIVING | FALL 2021

StatePoint The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it a rapid acceleration of telehealth as people looked for ways to access care safely. While technology kept many in the United States connected to care and loved ones, many low-income older adults were left behind by the sudden need to understand and access technology and internet services. However, among those who could stand to benefit the most from these services are 22 million older adults (ages 65 and above) in the United States who don’t have broadband ac cess at home. What’s more, older adults (ages 62 and above) with an income below $25,000 are 10 times more likely to be offline at home. Many older adults lack the technological lit eracy needed to leverage digital resources for health and social support. New efforts are helping to address these inequities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear that technology literacy and access are more crucial for older adults than ever before. When it comes to improving the health and well-being of communities, addressing this gap is essential.

Those at the helm of the project say they hope its success will serve as a model for other such

Following an initial pilot, participants report ed both an increase in device usage as well as confidence in using their devices. Technology helped to connect them to loved ones they were isolated from, and improved their overall health and wellbeing by reducing social isolation andWhenloneliness.asked about their favorite part of using a Google device, one participant stated, “Being able to connect visually with family and friends. And visually means a lot.”

Why Closing the Technology Gap for Older Adults Matters

“Olderprograms.adults have so much to gain from the connections and health care opportuni ties available with internet access and a basic understanding of technology,” says CITRIS Health director and Lighthouse project lead David Lindeman. “We’re eager to see this program replicated to improve equity in tele health.”Forresources that can help other organi zations implement similar programs, visit the Lighthouse project page on the CITRIS Health website, citris-uc.org.

A flour-based baking spray: As every home baker knows, one of the trickiest steps of any recipe is the final one –releasing your treat from the pan without dam aging it. If you’ve had a few failed attempts, you may have seen your creations go from masterpieces to flops in just a few short, heart breaking seconds. To stick the landing every time, (and never see your efforts go to waste again) try using a flour-based baking spray like Baker’s Joy for an easy release from the pan, and faster, more successful baking overall.

6 | SENIOR LIVING | FALL 2021

Baking powder: The workhorse of many recipes, one can’t overstate the importance of a dependable, double-acting baking powder. To that end, stick with tried-and-true brands like Clabber Girl, which has been making pastry perfection for over 100 years. Pro tip: quickly test baking powder’s efficacy by mixing a teaspoon with hot water. No fizzing reaction? Time to toss it.

Baking soda: Baking soda is the wild and more potent cousin of baking powder, so it’s important not to get them mixed up, especially as baking soda is often specifically called for in recipes containing an acid (think buttermilk and citrus.)

While there are many liberties you can take in the kitchen, guessing how much baking soda to use is not one of them. Always measure the exact amount listed to avoid a bitter taste in your finished product..

Premium spices seasonings and herbs: Any serious baker worth their salt will have a “go big or go home” mentality when it comes to spices. Give dishes extra depth by culling your collection to in clude only high-quality selections that pack a punch, like Spice Islands. Remember, keeping spices dry prolongs flavor, so place your rack in a cool, dry place away from oven heat.

| UNSPLASH 7 Must-Have Pantry Items That Will Elevate Your Baking Recipes

Shortening: While many view shortening and butter as interchangeable, they’re not the same. Be sure to reach for shortening any time you want your recipe to rise high and retain its shape or to attain that perfect flaky pastry or crust. Making plant-based swaps? An all-vegetable shortening like Crisco can be successfully used in place of butter for an all-vegetable twist on classic recipes.

Molasses: When mixed with white sugar, molasses can make a great substitute for brown sugar, but that’s just one of its many uses. A pantry staple and American tradition, it’s vital in dishes where moist consistency and depth of flavor are essential, such as pecan pie or gingerbread. Molasses from iconic brands like Grandma’s Molasses can also be the oohs-and-aahs-pro voking secret ingredient that has friends and family reaching for seconds.

StatePoint If your casual baking hobby has turned into an obsession, you’re in good company. Bak ing swept the nation as a way to pass the time in 2020, with an overwhelming 84% of respondents identifying as bakers in an endof-year Packaged Facts survey of Americans. However, there’s a difference between good and great baking, and it all starts with what’s in your pantry. According to the Baking at Home experts, here are seven must-have items you need to take your at-home recipes for breads, cobblers, cakes and more to the next level, as well as tips for using these pantry essentials to their fullest potential.

Vanilla extract: Whether you’re cutting back on added sug ars or you’re simply low on the sweet stuff, you can use vanilla extract as a flavorful, better-foryou sugar substitute.

StatePoint Many people look forward to their retirement for years. However, once it begins, they may find all the newfound free time overwhelming.

Learn to play music at your own pace: Learn music at your own pace: It’s never too late to begin your music education. Whether you’re learning to play the piano for the first time or revisiting an old passion, new tools will allow you to hone your skills independently and effectively. Check out Casiotone keyboards, which are portable and well-suited for any level of play, as most of the models have features that will guide you through its built-in songs by either a key-lighting system or an on-screen step-by-step process. With the ability to slow the tempo to aid in practice, or learn melodies individually by selecting left-hand or right-hand parts only, you can quickly master favorite tunes and build your musical confidence..

5 Ways to Stay Busy and Active in Retirement

Read the classics: Are there classic books you’ve always wanted to read but have never gotten around to? Use your abundance of free time to finally make your way through your literary bucket list. Whether it’s “Moby Dick” or “Ulysses,” consider inviting friends to participate. Challenging titles will be more easily and enjoyably tackled with friends and a discussion schedule. To promote your health and happiness in retirement, keep your body and mind active and engaged

Start a walking meet-up Host a morning walking group in your neigh borhood. A brisk morning walk is a low-impact way to get in shape and keep your heart healthy. Plus, the fresh air and camaraderie is good for your mental wellbeing. To ensure the group’s success, keep meet-up times consistent and let participants know in advance the pace and distance you plan to walk. You may even want to start a fun tradition, such as ending every stroll session at a local coffee shop.

8 | SENIOR LIVING | FALL 2021

If you’re planning on retiring soon, having a plan for how you’ll spend your time is important for your health and happiness. Here are five ideas for staying mentally and physically active, as well as engaged in your community

Become a tax expert: Consider taking an online course on how to do taxes and become a resource for friends during tax season. Get prepared by visiting the IRS site, which provides information on tax return preparer credentials and qualifica tions, as well as details about how this year’s tax laws have changed and how they’ll impact deductions. Equip yourself with a good printing calculator, such as the HR-170 from Casio, which features two-color printing and Cost/Sell/ Margin functionality. The calculator allows you to check and correct up to 150 steps and print your calculations after correction so you can maintain accuracy. Plus, its clock and calendar features will help you stay organized.. Volunteer your skills: Many recent immigrants need logistical help getting situated in the United States. If you speak a foreign language, consider volunteering through your local library or community center. Become a literacy buddy to your new neighbors or help them complete essential paperwork, such as job applications and school enrollment forms.

In the last few years, researchers have made startling connections with good hearing and mental fitness. Conversely, we have learned that a loss of hearing represents more than just difficulty hearing sounds. It often leads to social isolation and depression. Studies seem to show that hearing loss may also be linked to loss of memory and thinking skills. Johns Hopkins researchers found that declines in thinking skills happened faster among people with hearing loss than those without it. Diminished hearing can lead to less brain stimulation. It's clear that hearing loss is more than 'just' a hearing issue. For more detailed information visit www.hopkinsmedicine.org

Ensure providers are innetwork: One common reason to change your cov erage is if your favorite doctors are no longer in-network. Confirm that your current pro viders and any specialists you expect to visit in 2022 are still in your plan and that any new doctors you’ll be visiting accept new patients. If not, you might have to change plans or switch doctors to avoid paying more out of pocket.

Review your prescriptions: Review the drug pricing tiers to determine whether your prescription plan will cover your current medications and the costs. Keep in mind, some drug plans require prior authoriza tion for certain brand-name drugs.

10 | SENIOR LIVING | FALL 2021

Be aware of restrictions:travel

To evaluate your current plan, Culp rec ommends writing down what you like about it, including which aspects are essential to you. Based on your needs, review other plans to see how they stack up. The process of choosing a health plan can be overwhelming. However, you can eliminate some of the confusion by seeking advice from your doctor or family and friends. By attending in-person or virtual seminars or calling inde pendent health plan agents, you can have your questions addressed by experts. You can also visit your state health insurance assistance pro gram for additional information.

In the meantime, keep these tips in mind as you review plans: Estimate total costs: Make sure you know the current premium or monthly cost of your plan. Second, check your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). This is a letter mailed in late September that details changes to out-of-pocket costs, including copays and deductibles on doctor and hospital visits and prescription drugs. Finally, check to see the costs associated with visiting a special ist.

StatePoint The pandemic has made it clearer than ever -- maintaining good health is criti cal, and it all starts with having a health plan that works for you every day, and especially in times of greater need. If you qualify for Medicare, the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 through December 7, is an opportunity to ensure you have needed cov erage.“Now is the time to understand and evaluate your benefits and anticipate the care you may need in 2022,” says Gary Culp, chief growth officer for Medicare at Cigna. If you’re signing up for Medicare Advantage for the first time or making changes, you can do so during AEP. In both cases, the new ben efits will kick in on January 1, 2022. However, if you like your current plan and want to stick with it, you can do so.

5 Tips for Picking the Right Medicare Plan

Consider extras: Take a close look at extra benefits, such as dental, vision, health care-related transpor tation and virtual care visits, that go beyond what’s provided by original Medicare and may be built into a private insurer’s Medicare Ad vantage plan. Some plans may even include ad ditional health and wellness benefits that help you stay healthier, like fitness programs.

If you plan to travel or have another home out of state, consider plans with that in mind. Get savvy by visiting Medicare’s Plan Finder at Medicare.gov or Medicare plan websites such as www.cigna.com/medicare and use the above tips to assist you in reviewing your op tions.“Making sure your health plan meets your needs is up to you. After finding the right plan, be sure to take advantage of your benefits for a healthy, happy 2022,” says Culp.

The watches in the Pro Trek line feature Quad Sensor technology to provide you with tempera ture and barometric pressure so you can keep your eye on the weather conditions while out and about, as well as sunrise and sunset times, an app for anglers and much more.

StatePoint Experts say that keeping your mind and body healthy through the years can reduce your risk for cognitive decline. Try taking on these new hobbies to keep your mind sharp as you age:

• Camaraderie: Having an active social life can improve brain function. Unfortunately, if you aren’t proactive about it, there are not always that many opportunities to make new friends in adulthood. Whether it’s a sewing circle or a bowling league, consider joining a club or team for camaraderie and fun.

• Music: Learning to play a musical instru ment has countless benefits for brain health, helping improve memory, hand-eye coordina tion and more. It’s also a mood booster, which is important, as depression is considered a risk factor for dementia. Check out instruments designed to build skills quickly. Whether you’re a total novice or taking up the piano after a long hiatus, Casiotone Keyboards, for example, are portable, easy to use and connect to an app that features lessons and more.

• Cooking: Not only can the development of a new complicated skill such as cooking improve cognitive functions like problem-solving and concentration, but having the ability to create your own nutritious meals at home has the added benefit of being good for brain health.

From TikTok tutorials to online classes taught by master chefs, today, there are more avenues for picking up culinary know-how than ever before.

Sharp As You Age

• Fast fingers: Did you know that you can use your calculator to keep your mind engaged when there’s downtime or you’re on-the-go? Calculator games can build math skills, improve memory and keep your mind nimble.

Just as it is important to maintain physical fitness as you age, it’s also critical to exercise your mind. Stay mentally active by trying new hobbies, building new skills and seeking out new experiences.

• Exercise: The mind-body connection is strong. For ultimate brain health, stay physi cally active; and if you can do so outdoors, all the better. Research suggests that connecting with nature is good for one’s mental well-being, reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Support your journey with tools that track your activity and inspire you to delve further into adventures, whether that be hiking, fishing or rock climbing.

FBI — Oregon You’ve heard it time and again — don’t click on that link! Whether it came by text, email, or a social media post, that link could cause you endless grief. That link is part of what’s called a phishing scam — phishing with a “ph.” Scam artists need you to click on the link so they can download malware onto your device or trick you into log ging into what you think is a legitimate website. In seconds, you have now given them access to your phone or laptop AND the user ID and password to your bank account. Why do you click? That part of the scam is called social engineering. The bad actor’s goal is to generate extreme fear or happiness in you — or maybe even just a strong sense of curiosity. He just needs you to act before you think.

For instance — you receive a text with a link claiming to be a video of you. It could be innocent enough (you were eating!) or distress ing (you were caught naked or in an otherwise compromising act). You really, REALLY, want to see what that video shows. Don’t fall for it and certainly don’t click! Here are some helpful hints on how to stay safe, thanks to our partners at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC): Don’t respond to calls or texts from unknown or suspicious numbers. Never share your personal or financial infor mation via email, by text message, or over the phone.Becautious if you’re being pressured to share any information or make a payment immedi ately.

Beware of links from unfamiliar sources

Remember that government agencies will never call you to ask for personal information or money. Most importantly — don’t click any links in a text message. If a friend sends you a text with a suspicious link that seems out of character, call them to make sure they weren’t hacked. If you are the victim of an online scam, you should report the incident to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov or call your FBI local office.

But in the case of an elderly client, the AI systems need to interact with multiple people in the care team over months to years and adapt to changing conditions and goals.

Most older adults prefer to remain in their own homes, the researchers note. But safety concerns such as remembering to turn off the stove, medication schedules and isolation can make it difficult for them to do so.

The institute aims to develop artificial intelligence systems that work with elderly adults, including those diagnosed with mild cognitive impair ment, and their caregivers.

CORVALLIS — A team of researchers including Oregon State Univer sity’s Kagan Tumer, director of the Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute, has received a five-year, $20 million grant from the National Science foundation to build intelligent systems that help people as they grow old.

“An intelligent system could, for example, detect when the stove is left on and send a reminder to turn it off,” Tumer said. “And if the stove wasn’t turned off, the system could send an alert to a family member or caregiver.”Suchasystem could also be extended to support a full calendar of ap pointments, medication reminders and schedules for multiple caregivers.

The award leverages years of work at Oregon State University on the coordination of intelligent systems, human-AI teaming and AI systems that balance multiple objectives – for example, efficiency, safety, privacy and values. In addition to OSU and Georgia Tech, AI-CARING will include faculty from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and Oregon Health & Science University, and has Amazon and Google as industry sponsors. The core researchers will connect with other higher education institutions, nonprofits and government entities across the country to provide education and workforce opportunities to diverse groups.

“To help someone, you need to understand their re lationships, their preferred modes of interaction and their values,” said Tumer, who adds that “the goal is not to replace human caretakers but to assist them in creating support networks that can handle routine tasks and enable the medical professionals to focus on critical care.”

About the OSU College of Engineering: The 10th largest engineering program based on undergraduate enrollment, the college received nearly $60 million in sponsored research awards in the 2019-20 fiscal year and is global leader in health-related engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics, advanced manufacturing, clean water and energy, materials science, computing and resilient infrastructure. The college ranks second nationally among land grant universities and third among the nation’s 94 public R1 universities for percentage of tenured or tenure-track faculty who are women.
