Rfn Bobby Santrian started riding when he was three-years-old, his father, Lt Commander Bob Santrian (RN), was a member at Taunton Vale Polo Club when Bobby was growing up and it wasn’t long until he started joining in. Bobby swiftly entered the Pony Club polo circuit and went on to win the Subsidiary Final of the Hipwood Junior HPA section. Since joining the Army in 2020 he had to put his polo ambitions on hold. However, the Army has now provided him with the opportunity to rekindle his love with the sport and play with pride for the Army, being the first Rifleman to do so

Biggest polo achievements to date? This would have to be playing in the Rundle Cup 2022 and bringing home the Cup for the Army.

What is your biggest passion and why? I would have to say that improving my self in any way would be a good passion of my whether it be career or otherwise.

What is your all time best polo memory?

100 per cent drinking champagne from The Rundle Cup itself and seeing the people who have pushed me to be where I am, friends and family.

Who were/are your favourite teammates?

The Army Rundle Cup team, even though we didn’t have much time together, the cohesion made and the banter formed between us was great, no matter what rank.

Hardest opponent? When playing in Argentina at 16 goal polo, I was well out of my comfort zone. There were many times when I said to myself “I can’t beat this player” but giving it all, I managed to any way.

Which sports do you like outside of polo?

I haven’t played much sport outside polo, but Wednesday sports afternoon football is always fun.

Favourite film and

why? No contest or explanation needed. Hot Fuzz.

Favourite song/

album? Dance wiv Me by Dizzee Rascal, always sets a good vibe and can be played at anytime during the night to bring out the moves. Favourite food/dish? Spaghetti carbonara, I can cook it and it tastes amazing.

Favourite hobby outside of polo? I think the gym, as it keeps me healthy and in shape and its always available.

Most prized possession? I wouldn’t say I have a prized possession, I’m not a materialistic person in that way.

Favourite celebrity?

Johnny Depp.

Best holiday destination

& activity? Argentina! The culture, the food and the parties are set apart from all.

Best pony and why?

A horse I owned when getting into polo called Carolina. The horse that taught me how to be aggressive in the sport and how to dismount in style.

Are you passionately superstitious? I’m not superstitious in anyway, I’ll walk over grates and under ladders just fine.

Describe yourself in three words… Always need supervision

One thing which would surprise us about

you? My dad is a Naval Commando, has played in The Rundle Cup for the Navy and won in 2017, making me and my dad the only father and son to win The Rundle Cup for both sides.
