International & Home Women’s Polo The Sunny Hale’s Legacy Women’s Championship Tournament

The Sunny Hale’s Legacy Women’s Championship Tournament is now in its 14th year and was created by Sunny Hale, who was the first woman in American history to win the U.S. Open (Outback, 2000), who died in February 2017 due to complications from breast cancer at the age of 48-years-old. The tournament is held each year in her memory at Grand Champions Polo Club. In the WCT Open Final, Santa Rita (Nina Clarkin, Riley Ganzi, Mia Novillo Astrada & Mia Cambiaso) fought back from a four goal handicap deficit to defeat WPL (Alyson Poor, Clara Cassino, Milly Hine & Tiffany Busch) 10-6 to take the title; Riley Ganzi commented, “It’s a very special tournament. I would say it’s grown in terms of numbers of female players and also just spirit and support today. The WCT has attracted a lot more women to play polo. For me, it was always a friendly and welcoming environment to play in. It’s fun playing in an all-girls league and dominating the field in a male-dominated sport.” Novillo Astrada, who scored four goals, was named Most Valuable Player and Clasiquera, played by Mia Cambiaso and owned by Santa Rita Polo Farm, and Cuartetera Classified, owned by Adolfo Cambiaso, were the Best Playing Ponies.

The 8 Goal Final saw Casablanca (Lauren Bilsky, Mary Wright, Ariadne Dogani & Alyson Poor) defeat Grand Champions (Dolores Onetto, Malicia Von Falkenhousen, Jofy Giannico & Olivia Merlos) 2-0, with Poor named Most Valuable player and Giannico’s Chrome
