La Irenita Win Republica Cup

La Irenita, winners of The Republica Cup

On Tuesday 29 March at the Number 1 field at Palermo, La Irenita secured themselves The Republica Cup with a 14-13 win against La Chavita. La Irenita went into the Final with a seven goal handicap advantage, stacking the odds against their opponents from the outset. Despite this, La Chavita fought back and by the end of regulation play had managed to level the scores, 13-13, pushing the match into an extra chukka. Matías Mac Donough scored the golden goal to secure victory for La Irenita, later being named Most Valuable Player. This is the first Republica Cup title for the four players, with three players being only 18-years-old and Federico Panzillo just 20-years-old. The Republica Cup Final Teams: La Irenita (11): Mateo Sánchez Herrero (0), Tomás Delfino (2), Federico Panzillo (5) & Matías Mac Donough (4) La Chavita (18): Gastón Bardengo (3), Franco Veronesi (3), Joaquín Pittaluga (7) & Ignacio Acuña (5)

Whatever level of polo you play, by the beginning of the month of May, yards are full of polo ponies with coats that have now swapped their winter fluff, for sleak, highly toned skin; polo clubs are full with eager beaver Members, all of whom are vying for the first silverware of the season to adorn the mantlepiece; whilst the chat, aprés-polo, is already of the match they nearly won were it not for that missed whistle… the season has finally arrived and it sure is good to be back! Of course, the timing for this May issue of Polo Times is such that it is published just as the season is getting underway, and with that, it is timely we have not only included a round-up of polo overseas, including the U.S.Open, but also player and pony tips in our Knowledge pages to help our readers get the best out of their polo. In particular, Lorna Edgar’s report on how to avoid gastric ulcers is an informative and essentail read in pony welfare best-practice; whilst Rege Ludwig’s feature will undoubtedly help players attain the ‘perfect seat’ to help stay in harmony with one’s horse. Naturally, I hope that none of our readers will need to heed the advice of Andi, the PoloDoc. However, if you and your horse are unfortunate enough to come down together, Andi’s words might just be the difference between being back in the saddle quickly, or missing season. Whilst the vast majority of the UK’s players will never get to play 22 goal polo, I hope all readers will enjoy the High Goal Guide as a must-read; as not only does it show the up-and-coming young British talent which is already making waves at the top level, but, with 15 teams confirmed so far for 2022, it also highlights the greatest number of teams participating in recent years – which is particularly encouraging after the adverse effect which Covid undoubtedly has had on polo over the last two seasons. Not wishing to stray too far from the positivity that the 2022 polo season brings, it would nevertheless be remiss of me not to pay homage, and send our heartfelt best wishes to our European cousins in Ukraine – so this brave, determined and heroic nation may be successful in stopping the bloody, needless and futile aggression which is being metred out by their neighbour.

s this issue of Polo Times goes to print, the English 22 goal season is just getting underway for another iteration of one of the most favoured high goal circuits in the calendar. The season begins with The Justerini & Brooks Prince of Wales Trophy at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, where 10 teams will be vying for the chance to lift the stunning trophy, which was designed and created by British

jewellery and silverware designer, Theo Fennell. The Cartier Queen’s Cup was won by UAE Polo last year and since then they have had an impressive season in the United Arab Emirates, scooping up two out of five titles in The Dubai Gold Cup Series. The Gold Cup for The British Open at Cowdray Park Polo Club can usually be guaranteed to be bathed in glorious sunshine or torrential downpours, as are the joys of the British summer, but set against the stunning

Cowdray Ruins no one ever seems to mind a deluge or two. Last, but by no means least, is The Talacrest Prince of Wales Championship Cup which was a new addition last year and the first new English 22 goal tournament to be created since 1986. It was won by Andrey Borodin’s Park Place and with the addition of Park Place Vaara this year, the organisation has double the opportunity to add to the trophy cabinet. Polo Times, May 2022

GREAT OAKS LES LIONS (22) Dillon Bacon (2) Cruz Heguy (5) James Beim (6) Juan Martín Nero (9) 2020 Cartier Queen’s Cup winners, Great Oaks Les Lions, will be returning to the UK, but with an altered line-up. While Dillon Bacon and Cruz Heguy stay in situ, they will be joined by Englishman, James Beim, and 2020 Argentine Open winner, Juan Martín Nero, who enjoys successes around the globe, from Argentina to Saudi Arabia and America.

MONTEROSSO Alessandro Bazzoni (1) Ignacio ‘Cubi’ Toccalino (8) David ‘Pelón’ Stirling (9) Matías ‘Colo’ Gonzalez (4) Monterosso once again returns to the UK high goal season, with 75 percent of their 2021 line-up, with the only alteration being the addition of Matías ‘Colo’ Gonzalez in place of Mackenzie Weisz, who has had a handicap increase and with it a move to King Power. Gonzalez has had a standout season in the Dubai Gold Cup Series, where he won The Bentley Emirates Silver Cup with Habtoor Polo. Having reached The Cartier Queen’s Cup Semi Finals, The Prince of Wales Trophy Final and The Prince of Wales Championship Cup Final in 2021, no doubt Monterosso will be aiming to bring home some English silverware this season.

MARQUÉS DE RISCAL Alejandro Aznar (TBC) Santiago Cernadas (TBC) Santiago Laborde (TBC) Guillermo Caset (9) Although the team’s handicaps have yet to be fully confirmed by the Hurlingham Polo Association, the winners of the 2021 high goal Gold Cup in Sotogrande, Marqués de Riscal, could certainly ruffle some feathers in their debut English season. Representing Spain, Alejandro Aznar will be joined by Santiago Cernadas, with both players having also enjoyed success together winning the 2020 Deauville Gold Cup Final. Santiago Laborde had continued Sotogrande success in 2021, winning the high goal Silver Cup with Ayala, while the line-up is rounded off by 9 goaler Guillermo Caset.

MONTEROSSO VIKINGS (22) Siri Evjemo-Nysveen (0) Mark Tomlinson (6) Diego Cavanagh (8) Juan Martin Zubia (8) This year’s line-up sees a shake-up for Monterosso Vikings with Siri Evjemo-Nysveen and Juan Martin Zubia the only team members remaining from The Warwickshire Cup winning formation in 2021. Chris Mackenzie and Sebastian Merlos have been replaced by Mark Tomlinson, who will be a force to be reckoned with, on home turf and with an enviable string and set-up at Beaufort Polo Club behind him. Diego Cavanagh enjoyed a successful medium goal season in 2021 with Green Gates, winning The Harrison Cup and then reaching The Tortugas Open Final with the illustrious La Dolfina Saudi.

PARK PLACE VAARA (22) Josh Hyde (0) Hilario Ulloa (10) Juan Britos (8) Santos Merlos (4) The second of the Park Place teams, this is by no means a second best or backup line-up, with an impressive selection of players. Josh Hyde, Hilario Ulloa and Juan Britos have all been fine tuning their teamwork across the pond in The Gauntlet of Polo, the United States Polo Association’s (USPA) 22 goal series, which saw them win The C.V. Whitney Cup and reach the Final of The USPA Gold Cup, where they only just lost out on the win in overtime. Joining this winning combination is Santos Merlos, who won the inaugural President’s Cup at Palermo at the end of 2021.

UAE POLO (22) Barto Castagnola (9) Lukin Monteverde (6) Tommy Beresford (7) HH Sheikha Maitha (0) UAE Polo had an impressive 2021 English high goal season, winning The Cartier Queen’s Cup and later in the season losing out to Thai Polo NP by just two goals in The Gold Cup Final. Since then Tommy Beresford, HH Sheikha Maitha and Lukin Monteverde have been dominating the season in the United Arab Emirates, especially in The Dubai Gold Cup Series where they won The Dubai Gold Cup and The Dubai Challenge Cup and reached The Bentley Emirates Silver Cup Final, only to be beaten by Habtoor Polo. Barto Castagnola is a new addition to the team, fresh from his successful American season and subsequent US handicap raise to 10 goals.

LA MAGDELEINE (22) Alexandre Garese (0) Pablo MacDonough (9) Facundo Fernández Llorente (7) Ollie Cudmore (6) Frenchman Alexandre Garese lifted The French Open in 2021 across the channel with teammate Facundo Fernández Llorente and will be looking to recreate his successes in his foray into the English high goal. With Ollie Cudmore’s experience of the English season, his high goal wins include The Gold Cup (2018) and Warwickshire Cup (2020 and 2013) combined with Pablo MacDonough’s return to British high goal and fresh from his successes in America where he has been honing his high goal skills in the 26 goal World Polo League.

MURUS SANCTUS (22) Corinne Ricard (0) Facundo Sola (8) Marcos Araya (6) Alfredo Cappella (8) Corinne Ricard’s Murus Sanctus returns once again to the English 22 goal; Alfredo Cappella, who won the 2021 Pilar Cup and Facundo Sola, who won The Dubai Silver Cup, are already well acquainted having played together for RS Murus Sanctus in the 2020 Argentine Triple Crown. Marcos Araya last lifted a high goal trophy in 2014 when he won The Prince of Wales Trophy with La Indiana, but has dominated international circuits in latter years, especially in the UAE.

CIBAO LA PAMPA/CHAPALEUFÚ (22)

SCONE (TBC)

Juan Pepa (1) Rufino Bensadon (7) Juan Gris Zavaleta (7) Alejandro Muzzio (7) Cibao La Pampa/Chapaleufu is making its British high goal debut this season, with Juan Pepa and Juan Gris Zavaleta joined by Alejandro Muzzio and Rufino Bensadon who won The Justerini & Brooks Prince of Wales Trophy in 2021 with Louis and Ned Hine. Juan Pepa is more often seen on the continent, where he has led his Cibao La Pampa team to successes over the years including the 2021 KE Sotogrande Cup.

David Paradice (0) Adolfo Cambiaso (10) Poroto Cambiaso (8) TBC The 2021 Cartier Queen’s Cup eluded David Paradice and he is once again returning in full force, with sights firmly set on securing some English trophy cabinet bounty. Paradice will be lining up again with the father-son Cambiaso duo, with all three having the advantage of having competed together throughout the USPA’s Gauntlet of Polo; no doubt being bested by rivals Park Place in the 2022 C.V. Whitney Cup will make them hungrier than ever. The fourth player has still to be decided, with the team reportedly trying different variations before making their decision.

KING POWER (22) Top Srivaddhanaprabha (1) Nico Pieres (9) Mackenzie Weisz (5) James Harper (7) King Power are back in the high goal! No doubt aiming to build upon their back-to-back successes in 2015 and 2016, Top Srivaddhanaprabha returns to the British high goal circuit, albeit with a different line-up, after a successful 2021 season for King Power. Nico Pieres (whose brothers, Gonzalito and Facundo were part of the 2015 and 2016 line-ups) will be playing alongside Mackenzie Weisz, hot from his successful 2022 US season with Pilot. Completing the line-up is James Harper, who won the 2021 Gold Cup alongside teammate Nico Pieres (with Thai Polo and the Hine brothers) and has also been confirmed as the Captain of the England side who will face Uruguay in this year’s Coronation Cup.

TWELVE OAKS (22) Charlie Wooldridge (1) Joaquin Pittaluga (7) Christian ‘Magoo’ Laprida (8) John Paul Clarkin (6) Twelve Oaks are no strangers to the UK, having frequently competed in the medium goal circuits, but 2022 is the team’s first foray into the high goal. In the team’s 22 goal debut Charlie Wooldridge is joined by John Paul Clarkin who has enjoyed a successful New Zealand season, winning The New Zealand Open and Savile Cup; Christian ‘Magoo’ Laprida who competed in the UK high goal for Valiente in 2018 and rounded off with Joaquin Pittaluga who has reached several top Finals in the last 12 months, including The Argentine Republic Cup and Metropolitan Cup High Goal Final and Cowdray Challenge Cup.

Rashid Albwardy (1) Camilo ‘Jeta’ Castagnola (9) Matt Perry (5) Jerónimo Del Carril (7) Dubai is another of the top teams using 2022 as their season comeback; Rashid Albwardy will be returning after a two-year hiatus, this time with 2019 Gold Cup winner, Camilo ‘Jeta’ Castagnola, whose handicap was raised at the end of the 2021 season to 9 goals, Brit Matt Perry who lifted The Queen’s Cup in 2014 and 2013 as well as The Gold Cup in 2013 too, and Jerónimo Del Carril, who had a successful 2021 season in the UK (winning The Duke of Wellington with King Power), France and Argentina. Castagnola has had a terrific past 12 months, winning across the globe with titles including The Argentine Open, Hurlingham Open, Argentine Youth Open, Triple Crown of Polo and Founders Cup. 18

PARK PLACE (22) Andrey Borodin (0) Facundo Pieres (10) Fran Elizalde (8) Will Harper (4) The Park Place organisation are doubling their chances of success this year with not one, but two high goal teams. Andrey Borodin’s Park Place secured The Talacrest Prince of Wales Championship Cup in 2021, this year sees just one change to their line-up with Fran Elizalde replacing Juan Britos (who is now playing for Park Place Vaara). Facundo Pieres and Elizalde have been sharpening their skills in America, with 2022 USPA Gold Cup and U.S. Open Polo Championship and 2021 Tortugas Open wins for Facundo Pieres, while Elizalde has reached the Finals of some top tournaments (Ylvisaker Cup, The Argentine Open, The Tortugas Open, San Jorge Open and USPA Gold Cup), but has not quite managed to take home the silverware. Will Harper once again returns to Park Place for the season; no doubt keen to build upon their end of season success last year.

he USPA Gold Cup was first played for in 1974 at Oak Brook Polo Club but was moved to Milwaukee Polo Club the following year where it was played for until 1978; in 1979 the Cup moved to Florida where it has become the most coveted trophy of the Floridian winter circuit. In 2019 Pilot secured the prestigious title and also made history that year by capturing all three Gauntlet of Polo trophies to take the first ever Gauntlet of Polo overall title, plus the $500,000 bonus; therefore they returned this year keen to retake the title once again. The USPA Gold Cup forms the second stage of The Gauntlet of Polo series, following on from The C.V. Whitney Cup and this year saw all nine 2022 C.V. Whitney Cup teams (Cessna, Coca-Cola, Dutta Corp/Show+, La Fe, La Indiana, Pilot, SD Farms) compete, as well as the addition of four additional team entries (CK Shack, La Elina, Old Hickory Bourbon/Airstream, Tamera) which meant a total of 13 teams trying to get a hold of the trophy. Having tasted the heady heights of success in 2019, it was a shock for Pilot not to make a single Gauntlet of Polo Final in 2021, so the team took steps to ensure their success this year, by bringing the team

together early and putting an extra focus into horsepower, Zavaleta commented, “Facundo called me in May [2021], he wanted me to play, and we made an early plan with the horses. He invited me with a lot of time, and we brought horses from Argentina. We got organized the best we could, I think that made the difference.” Both teams had enjoyed an undefeated journey to the Final, with Park Place’s only 2022 Gauntlet of Polo defeat being at the hands of Pilot in the early stages of The C.V. Whitney Cup, however they overcame this early hurdle to go on and win the title. So as the spectators gathered in the stands it was anyone’s guess as to who would come out the winner. Pilot were prepared with tactics, horsepower and teamwork, while Park Place knew they would have to work with a strong offensive to overpower the athletic Facundo Pieres, who entered The USPA Gold Cup Final with sixty goals in the season. Despite facing an uphill battle to contain Park Place’s number one rated offense, Pilot pushed on undeterred and by the end of regulation time, both sides held 10 goals apiece, pushing the match into nail-biting overt-time. As both sides tried to find the golden goal, Pieres created space to run the ball across the back line and return Pilot to the winner’s podium once more with a final score of 11-10.

ith both teams going into the Final with high goal scores, the match was expected to be an offensive battle from both sides. Catamount pounced into the first half, controlling the possession and with Nacho Novillo Astrada using his defensive position at back to pump the ball forward, while Toro Ruiz thwarted several offensive attempts by Richard Mille, which saw Catamount enjoying a 5-3 lead at half-time. The second half saw even play from both sides and although Catamount had a scoreless fourth chukka, by the fifth chukka they were still ahead by two goals, 7-5. In the first few minutes of the sixth chukka,

Where: Grand Champions Polo Club Grant Ganzi converted a 30 yard penalty for Richard Mille to cut the margin to 7-6, swiftly followed by a field goal from Pablo MacDonough just a minute later to level the scores, 7-7. With less than three minutes left on the clock, Ruiz and Novillo Astrada teamed up to regain the lead for Catamount, 8-7, while Richard Mille fluffed their next scoring opportunity. In the last 60 seconds a Richard Mille foul gave Catamount the ball, which Novillo Astrada wasted no time passing to MacDonough for one last chance at goal; however, Ruiz cleared both the ball and Juan Martin Nero out of the action. As the clock ticked down, it was Polito Pieres, later named Most Valuable Player,

who scored the last match of the day for Catamount, securing them The Palm Beach Open title with a score of 9-7. Catamount are no strangers to success, having won seven major tournaments, including The C.V. Whitney Cup, in the mid-2000s, patron Scott Devon commented, “We had a really good run with a good team with Mike Azzaro and Carlos Gracida, that was my goal back then to have a competitive team in the high goal. Coming into this season I didn’t have a lot of expectations. I was going to play the 16 goal but got talked into playing the 26 and I’m glad I did. To play against some of the best players helped my game.” www.polotimes.co.uk

Richard Mille, The World Polo League Triple Crown of Polo defending champions, were knocked off their top spot by Pampa Norte Biotricity at Grand Champions Polo Club. Pipe Vercellino led his team to victory, scoring four goals and was named Most Valuable Player, while Juan Martin Nero scored eight goals for Richard Mille in an

attempt to retain the title. Vercellino commented on his team’s win, “For me this was really important. It was 26goal, the highest level after Argentina and highest level here in the U.S. To win the last tournament of the World Polo League is amazing for me playing the first time in the league. To win a tournament is incredible. It can’t be better to finish the season like that.” Going into the tournament Pampa Norte Biotricity were the underdogs, with just a 20 goal handicap, but this played into their favour as they started the Final with a five goal handicap advantage and they led for the first two chukkas. Richard Mille bounced back with four unanswered goals which left them trailing by just one goal at halftime, 8-7. Naysayers were proven wrong in the second half as Pampa Norte Biotricity continued to lead, refusing to let Richard Mille get ahead and finished the Final with a score of 14-13. This was World Polo League’s last grass tournament of the 2022 season, with the remaining 26 goal tournament, The WPL Beach Polo World Cup in Miami Beach, being played in, you guessed it, Miami Beach.

U.S. Open Polo Championship

2

022 saw a record-breaking twenty teams compete in The U.S. Open Polo Championship, the first time this feat has been achieved since the tournament’s inception over 100 years ago. 38 matches were played at International Polo Club Palm Beach from 29 March to the Final on Sunday 24 April, with Pilot and La Elina emerging as the two top teams in the field. Pilot entered the Final with an undefeated run of six qualifying matches under their belts, as well as an earlier Gauntlet of Polo win in The USPA Gold Cup (turn to page 25 for a full report). Meanwhile, opponents La Elina had endured a rockier road to the Final, with five wins and two losses, having had to compete in an extra elimination match in the playoffs. Additionally, for La Elina they faced a line-up alteration after losing their 10 goal player, Sapo Caset, to rivals Scone, with Jared Zenni filling the vacant slot to create a balanced and determined team. Although Pilot went into the Final undefeated, they were more than aware of the opposition they were up against, with the four-man professional line-up of La Elina in the forefront of Curtis Pilot’s mind, “I was very nervous coming into this one, it’s a very balanced team with four pros. I’m not a pro, we had three against four.” Despite holding five U.S. Open titles to his name already (2009, 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2019), going into this US season Facundo Pieres was struggling with confidence, “when I started this season, I proposed to myself that I wanted to score every penalty and the most goals that I could. I wanted to do that, and I wanted to win. The team won, the horses won, everything was special.” Going on to explain, Facundo added, “I was struggling a little bit with confidence. I’m happy to be back here, I really wanted to feel these sensations again – to win and feel comfortable.”. However, any internal confidence issues were nowhere to be seen to the crowds or the opposition as Pieres kicked off Pilot’s offensive with the first goal of the match, unsurprising given Pieres entered the Final with 104 goals already scored in the tournament, and continued to forge ahead to give Pilot a three goal lead. La Elina managed to reply in the second chukka with another goal, but Pilot continued to push ahead with their unified play to extend their lead and while La Elina tried to shutdown Pieres, this enabled Mackenzie Weisz and Zavaleta to find space and with it goals, to contribute to Pilot’s convincing 9-2 lead by half-time. Their seven goal lead even surprised Pieres who commented, “I never thought that we were going to go into halftime up by seven, that gave us a lot of peace of mind, not everything worked out at first, but we recovered important balls and scored the goals we had to.”

After the half-time break, La Elina came out with two quick goals from Zenni and Juan Martin Obregon, hoping to redirect the match momentum back in their favour, but despite the blanket of pink La Elina shirts surrounding Pieres, he still managed to wriggle free and score his seventh goal of the match to maintain Pilot’s lead, 10-4. Pilot were very aware of their lead lulling them into relaxing and letting loose of the reins, but by maintaining their marking they were able to hold back La Elina’s last ditch shooting spree, as Zavaleta commented, “We had to continue the same as we had been playing and maintain our system. We had to take control of the ball when they were on offense because they’re four strong players – we had to watch out.” This discipline allowed Pilot to retain their lead,

take an 11-6 win and with it return to The U.S. Open Polo Championship podium. The win was a first for 19-year-old Weisz who expressed his jubilation, “It’s always been a dream [of mine]. As a child, you want to be here and you want to win. Winning today is impressive and I can’t believe it! I want to thank all the grooms and Pilot’s manager [Gonzalo de la Fuente] for being involved.” Pilot received $100,000 in prizemoney, which Pilot plans to donate to cancer-related foundations in memory of his daughter, Nikki Pilot, who passed away from breast cancer in 2019. Additionally, each team also received a $2,500 donation in partnership with U.S. Polo Assn. to gift to a polo charity of their choice, Pilot’s donation was given to the Polo Players Support Group while La Elina’s went to the Polo Pony Rescue.

aturday 2 April saw crowds descend upon Inanda Polo Club, Sandton, South Africa, for the 2022 Nedbank International Polo. The day kicked off with a match between East Rand (Xolisa Memani (-1), Bayley Evans (0), Zac Levy (1) & Tsakatsi (Lala) Motlatsi (2)) and Inanda (Rendani Makesha (-1), Alyssa Taylor (0), James Dewey (0) & Zompie Tsotetsi (2)); both young line-ups were evenly matched and this was evident by the 3-3 tie at the end of the match. Next-up was the main event of the day, the international contest between South Africa and England. Both teams enjoyed similar horsepower and handicaps, with the England team very well mounted by their hosts, a tell-tale sign was the Best Playing Pony prize which was awarded to England’s Charlie Hanbury for UFO, which was lent by his opponent, Craig James. The scores were event throughout the match, right until the dying minutes of action, when South Africa just managed to pull ahead by one goal to secure the win, 6-5. A successful international event both on and off the field, plans are already afoot for the 2023 event!

ith the culmination of The Dubai Cup at the beginning of April, the 2022 Dubai Gold Cup Series came to an end for another year at Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club. Founded in 2009 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and what began as just one tournament, The Gold Cup, has grown over the past 13 years to include five tournaments from 18 to 8 goal. This year’s tournament saw UAE Polo dominate, featuring in three out of the five Finals and winning two of those, the 18 goal Dubai Gold Cup and the 8-10 goal Dubai Challenge Cup. On Saturday 9 April, Abu Dhabi Polo took to the field for their first Final of the season, where they faced Habtoor Polo, who had enjoyed success in The Bentley Emirates Silver Cup Final, where they defeated UAE Polo, in the first tournament of the series – would Habtoor Polo be able to triumph again? Going into the Final, Habtoor Polo had form, having enjoyed a 7-6 win against Abu Dhabi on the opening day of the tournament and Habtoor Polo dominated from the outset, maintaining their early two goal lead until halftime. Abu Dhabi fought back in the second half, with Faris Yabhouni opening the penultimate chukka with a goal, but Habtoor Polo replied with their own goal and this exchange continued in the third chukka. However, during the fourth chukka Habtoor Polo secured back-to-back goals which Abu Dhabi were unable to match and Habtoor Polo took the win.

layers united at Grand Champions Polo Club on Friday 22 April for the inaugural Zavaleta Perpetual Cup, to benefit the recovery fund for Clemente ‘Corchito’ Zavaleta. The Park Place and Pilot line-ups featured five current 10 goal players, Hilario Ulloa, Juan Martin Nero, Facundo Pieres, Pablo MacDonough and Gonzalito Pieres, as well as pending 10 goal player Barto Castagnola who will be raised from 9 to 10 goals in December this year. Although the day was not about the winners or losers, Park Place defeated Pilot, 4-2, in an emotional match for all involved. Facundo Pieres commented, “Messages and support from the polo community all around the world have been overwhelming. I was talking with Magoo Laprida and Hillario Ulloa, who are both quite close to Corchito, and we wanted to create an event to bring people together to show our support for his recovery. We asked the Ganzi family if Grand Champions would give us a place to play a match in his honour and they accepted without hesitation. n Saturday 16 April, history was made as the first ever Ladies World Cup Final was played at Palermo, with over 6,000 spectators gathered to cheer on the home team, Argentina, against the United States. The milestone tournament saw six nations compete for the title (Argentina, Brazil, United States, England, Ireland and Italy). Argentina played a strong offensive game from the outset, with Azucena Uranga (later named Most Valuable Player) fighting in all areas of the field to assist her teammates to convert goal after goal. Catalina Lavinia, the youngest member of the team at just 16-years-old, managed to take the title of top goal scorer for her team, with 10 goals overall. Before the main Final, The Silver Cup was awarded to England who defeated Italy in the battle for third place in the Subsidiary Final. Having been narrowly defeated by Italy in the European Championships Final in late September the English players were keen to even out the scores. Going into the last chukka England had a healthy 2½ goal lead, however Italy staged a rallying comeback to lead by half a goal with seconds left to play, but the new rule in Argentina that if the ball is hit before the final bell and then goes through the goal after the bell then the goal stands, meant Heloise Wilson-Smith was able to score the winning goal for England with the last hit of the game.

Aiken Polo Club, 2022 Girls’ National Interscholastic Championship winners

Sunday 27 March saw a rematch of last year’s Girls’ National Interscholastic Championship Final with defending champions, Aiken Polo Club, up against Maryland Polo Club. The Final was held at Brookshire Polo Club arena in Brookshire, Texas, with the finalists emerging from a roster of five competitive teams. Going into the Final, Aiken Polo Club knew this would be their last chance to lift the trophy as a team, with high school seniors and sisters Reagan and Robyn Leitner competing in their last championship match. Aiken Polo Club played confidently on their home string as Robyn Leitner commented, “It was really nice having our own horses because we knew there would be at least two chukkers that we could rely on them. I think bringing them gave us an advantage because we all knew how our horses played, and how to make the most of them. It took us two days to get to Houston [Texas] and both days we spent about eight hours on the road! Travelling together was a great bonding moment for our team, as we

Lance Stefanakis enjoys his winning goal

On Sunday 20 March, Houston Polo Club faced Aiken Polo Club in the 2022 Open National Interscholastic Championship Final at Brookshire Polo Club arena. Houston Polo Club took an early three goal lead, but struggled to maintain a clean game in the second half, which allowed Aiken Polo Club back into contention going into the last chukka. Considerable effort from Will Mudra and Lance Stefanakis, with the latter scoring the winning goal, meant Houston Polo Club secured themselves a 10-7 and their first Open National Interscholastic Championship title. The win was even sweeter for Houston Polo Club who lost out on the 2021 title, which pushed the team to put a lot of effort into their pre-tournament preparations, as Lance Stefanakis explained, “We were even more determined to win this year. We dedicated ourselves to working harder, as a team and as individuals. It took waking up a few hours earlier every day,

practicing a few more times every week and having a collective mission to win a National Championship.” The Sportsmanship Award was presented to Luke Howe (Yale Polo Club), while Houston’s Will Mudra took home the Horsemanship Award and Titona (Pistola x Lamborghini), a 10-year-old mare owned by Aiken Polo Club’s Lazaro Gorosito was presented with the Best Playing Pony rug. 2022 Open National Interscholastic Championship Final Teams: Houston Polo Club: Joe Bob Lequerica, Will Mudra, Lance Stefanakis, Ashvath Bhatia & Judah Altic Aiken Polo Club: Madison Jordan, Josh Escapite, Aiden Meeker & Lazaro Gorosito

Over 6 – 9 April, The National Intercollegiate Championships were contested for the first time since 2019 (following two years of Covid cancellations), with teams battling it out at Virginia Polo Club. Eight Division I teams contested the men’s and women’s trophies, with University of Virginia (UVA) consistently performing on both sides to secure both titles, the first time UVA has achieved the women’s and men’s titles in the same year, since 2012. The men’s Final saw University of Virginia (UVA) face University of North Texas, with both teams boasting strong, cohesive line-ups Polo Times, May 2022

and by half-time the two sides were tied with matching statistics. At half-time, UVA assessed their performance and realised they had been focusing on the ball too much, “We weren’t playing how we normally do. We weren’t passing to each other. We were just focused on the ball and running all over the place. When we slowed it down and started thinking about it and making plays it felt like every goal we scored in the second half, every man touched the ball” commented Parker Pearce. UVA flew into the second half, leaping ahead of University of North Texas to secure the Men’s National Intercollegiate Championship title 13-7. Earlier in the day, University of Virginia Cavaliers (UVA) and University of Kentucky Wildcats (UK) faced each other in The Women’s National Intercollegiate Championship Final; With a strong offense and tireless teamwork, UVA were able to avenge their earlier tournament loss against UK with a convincing 17-9 win.

University of Connecticut, winners of the 2022 Division II Women’s National Intercollegiate Championship

Babson College and Skidmore College faced each other in The Division II National Intercollegiate Championship Final at Legends Polo Club in Kauffman, Texas on Sunday 27 March. On the day both teams were relatively even as they were both mounted by Prestonwood Polo Club, but Babson utilised their offensive play to get the upper hand and secure themselves a 13-8 win, quite an achievement in their first full year as a Club. On the same day, the University of Connecticut Huskies and Texas Tech University Red Raiders took to the arena for the inaugural Division II Women’s National Intercollegiate Championship Final, also at Legends Polo Club. Having not won a national title since 2008, University of Connecticut Huskies were hungry for the win, but had

to work hard as back-and-forth frenzied action from both sides saw a high scoring first half. However, they entered the second half with renewed vigour and dominated the last two chukkas to take a 15-11 win and with it the inaugural championship title.

IMPROVING POLO SKILLS by Rege Ludwig

Unfortunately, there has been little written on the subjects of how to teach the game of polo and/or how to play it. My soon to be released educational program entitled, Improving Polo Skills, deals with both topics. My major focus is on the riding, the controlling and the playing of the polo horse. I discuss how you do each affects the way you execute the strategy of the game, and hit the ball. Over many years of working in polo, I have heard again and again that the polo horse is at least seventy percent of a player’s ability to play the game of polo. If that is true, as I am sure it is, then it only makes sense that if you want to improve your polo playing skills, the obvious place to start is where the largest percentage of your playing ability lies, i.e., riding, controlling, and playing the horse. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book One, Riding, I go into great detail explaining “WHY” the Polo Style of Riding is so important to playing the game of polo. I then go into the “HOW TO” of riding in the Polo Style. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book Two, Hitting, I go into an in-depth discussion on why a strong, secure and stable hitting platform is crucial to hitting any of the eight shots used in polo. Additionally, I introduce my Hitting Checklist, which is a series of steps that Half Seat must be executed in sequential order if efficient hitting of any of the eight shots used in polo is to be realized. I refer to that sequential order as, The Law of Sequence. I also go into how the ending of one shot feeds into the beginning of the shot used for hitting in the opposite direction on the same Begin Offside Fore Shot to End Offside Fore Shot/Begin Offside Backshot side. In the book, Improving Polo Skills, Book Three, Strategy, I discuss what the line of the ball and the right of way are. I reference each in a manner that defines how each should be used if maximum safety and effectiveness of play are to be realized. I also discuss, from an offense and a defense perspective, what the responsibilities are for each of the four positions in the outdoor game and the three positions of the indoor game. I also break the width of the field down into three sections that extend the length of the field. The middle section is an 80-yard-wide area where the offensive #1 and defensive #4, while staying on a direct line between the ball and the goal, should play the majority of the game. The two 50-yard-wide sections, on either side of the field, are areas where the #2s and #3s should play a large portion of the game. For more information go to RegePolo.com

Revisiting Gastric Ulcers After talking about the digestive system last month, I thought it might be appropriate to revisit and remind ourselves about Gastric Ulcers and how we can make some small changes in everyday stable management to help reduce the risks of getting them and treating them. Research has shown that more than 90 per cent of racehorses in intensive training have gastric ulcers and two different studies on leisure horses have found that up to 37 per cent in one study and 53 per cent in another have gastric ulcers, so it is highly likely that polo ponies are at high risk too.

at the effects of exercise on the digestive system and found that there is increased pressure when a horse exercises at high intensity, leading to compression of the stomach, thus pushing the acidic contents of the gastric region into the squamous region – the ‘sloshing’ effect. The longer the training, the increased time the squamous region is exposed to acid, increasing the potential for ulcers to occur.

What are the Signs of Ulcers? The only way to make a definitive diagnosis is via a gastroscope examination. The

symptoms that would lead you to a discussion with your vet include: • Poor appetite • Weight loss – ‘good doers’ are just as susceptible • Loose droppings/acidic smelling droppings • Mild signs of colic • ‘Girthiness’/grumpiness/hypersensitive • Resistance or explosiveness under saddle • Excessive recumbency (lying down) • Dull coat • Poor performance/exercise intolerance

How do they occur?

Photography courtesy of Lorna Edgar

As we will have learnt from last month’s article, the horse is designed to have a constant flow of fibre passing through its digestive system. The stomach continuously produces hydrochloric acid in its lower glandular region to begin the digestive process, PRODUCING APPROX 1 ½ LITRES PER HOUR. Saliva is produced through chewing (when the horse is ‘trickle feeding’ naturally it will produce up to 12 litres per day), which helps neutralise the acid through its bicarbonate content and acts as a buffer to the gastric acid in the stomach. The lower, glandular area, of the stomach is protected by mucus. The upper, squamous region of the stomach has no built-in protection because it relies on the physical barrier of the continuously ingested fibre. Generally, ulceration of the upper squamous region can occur when acid from the lower region splashes up, either because of insufficient fibre passing through the stomach and/or through the physical effect of exercise. Ulcers in the glandular region (pyloric ulcers) are less common but can occur when the protective barrier is compromised, for example, through stress or continued use of drugs, like ‘bute’.

Exercise Causing Ulcers

The severity of ulcers seems to be greatest in horses that are in training for prolonged periods of time; researchers have looked 64

What is the Treatment?

Following gastroscopic diagnosis, there are a number of medications which can be recommended by your vet, most commonly, omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor which suppresses the production of stomach acid. Alongside medical treatment, management and diet are instrumental for recovery and prevention of recurrence.

What Supplements can be Used?

A growing variety of supplements are available with some ingredients now also being included in feeds as well. These may help support a treatment and management regime and aid in the prevention or recurrence of ulcers. Key ingredients include: • Antacids – Support the buffering of gastric acid, helping to neutralise stomach pH • Beta-glucans – Soluble fibre which can act as a coating for the stomach lining, as well as improving the digestion of starch and sugar within the foregut • Pre- and probiotics – Support the population of beneficial bacteria within the hindgut, helping to promote the digestion of fibre. • Gum Arabic – A natural prebiotic and source of soluble dietary fibre (a complex polysaccharide) which supports the relief of inflammation and the integrity of the stomach lining. • Pectin – a water-soluble fibre commonly found in beet pulp which turns into a gel in contact with gastric acid which could help protect the lining of the stomach.

It is important for polo ponies to be allowed access to hay, haylage or grass

very useful, as are freeze dried grasses or hay replacements. These can all be fed in separate buckets from the compound feed, in order to provide a selection and to encourage natural foraging behaviour.

Concentrate Feed

Research suggests that the horse should not receive any more than 1g/kg of bodyweight per meal of starch, or 2g of starch per kg of bodyweight per day, to assist in the treatment and management of gastric ulcers. When looking at feed labels, ‘low starch’ would be 10% and below, with typical competition mixes being around 30% starch. • Removing oats from the diet is an absolute MUST!

How to Assist with Feeding & Management

Constant access to ad lib forage is ESSENTIAL, to keep the horse chewing and producing saliva, which contains its own buffer to help neutralise stomach acid. If the horse can’t be worked from the field, then lengthy daily spells of turnout on grass are also important for increasing the fibre intake and to help reduce stress. Concentrate feed needs to contain minimal starch (<10%) to help keep acidity levels in the digestive tract under control. Exercising on an empty stomach should be avoided, so it is wise to ensure fibre has been consumed – a scoop of alfalfa chaff 20-30 minutes before exercise is ideal and WON’T hinder performance. Alfalfa is known to have natural acid – buffering properties, hence when given before exercise can really help to act as a ‘mat’ and reduce the amount of acid ‘sloshing’ in the stomach.

Fibre Intake

For the hard-working polo pony, who often has limited access to fibre/forage/grass or perhaps are not good hay/haylage eaters, increasing time at hay, haylage or grass, or providing alternative fibre sources is essential to encourage and increase fibre intake. Alfalfa chaffs, soaked beet pulp or beet/alfalfa combinations are also www.polotimes.co.uk

Remember, the ‘rugby ball’ sized stomach does not stretch, not more than 1 ½ scoops of cubes/mix/chaff/ beet per feed!

Feeding a High Calorie Diet… Forage • Choose a soft, leafy hay or haylage, which is likely to be more nutritious and more digestible • If poor forage eaters offer alternative fibre sources, such as alfalfa chaff, freeze dried grasses or beet pulp such as Speedi-Beet/ Fibre Beet, ideally in separate buckets from the hard feed so they can graze continuously o Alfalfa for its buffering capacity, and beet pulp has a good ‘acid binding’ capacity and high in pectins which are beneficial in that their structure alters to one that is similar to mucus when in an acidic environment, consequently acting as further protection to the stomach Concentrates • Baileys Ease & Excel, for example, is a low starch (8%) high specification feed, it has a high Digestible Energy (13MJ/kg) which is delivered by oil and fibre and is fully balanced when fed in the correct quantities

Knowledge

Oils (Outshine high oil supplement) can be added to an existing balanced diet to provide additional low starch calories

Lower Calorie Requirements

Forage • Good-doers must be kept chewing even though forage intake may need controlling to avoid weight Low starch feeds assist in the treatment and gain. Choose coarser, management of gastric stalkier (less leaf, more ulcers stem) hay or haylage which is more mature and should be less nutritious yet still provide plenty of fibre to chew • Give lots of small feeds of forage • Use small-holed nets to make forage last for as long as possible Concentrates • Balancers will provide essential vitamins, minerals and protein without unwanted calories and with minimal starch and sugar • Balancers must be fed to the recommended levels • The balancer can be fed with a small amount of alfalfa • Although beet pulp can be fed for conditioning, when fed in smaller amounts it can be beneficial for good-doers due to its ‘acid binding’ capacity. As a guideline, one mug of Speedi-Beet will soak to approximately a Stubbs scoop in wet volume – making it a great low calorie and low starch fibrous option when fed in this way

Careful Management

So, while diagnosis and treatment are highly recommended, some horses will respond to appropriate changes in management and diet alone but these will need to be maintained to ensure the horse continues to feel comfortable. For some, a small reduction in starch intake or cereal levels will be sufficient to improve their performance, outlook and condition, while others require a more radical approach. The hard-working polo pony is at risk from ulcers caused by acid-splash during exercise, no matter how little starch they are fed so, for them, careful management is even more important – and doing away with muzzles is a must! Ensuring that the horse has constant access to water may also help to dilute gastric fluid and help increase the pH so it is less acidic. Studies have shown those without access to water whilst in their paddock were more likely to have ulcers with grade 2 or more. Plenty of food for thought! Squeezed, Rotated, Fractured Damage control technique

Lately, many famous professional polo players faced season-ending injuries on the field. In most cases a combination of impact from the horse with the speed of the game plus the height of the fall result in massive impact on anatomical structures. The consequence is that fractures of the bone, rupture of the ligaments and damage to the soft tissue are common occurrences. A total recovery is possible, but the journey maybe long and small mistakes in the initial treatment can tremendously impact the final result and the time to safely return to play.

up to 1,000 pounds falling on the ground. This is a unique situation in sport injuries. Most likely additional impact results from rotation which is a condition when the fall is combined with impact. When these forces impact the human body, a certain threshold leads to fractures of the bone and rupture of ligaments. The surrounding soft tissue is like an envelope. An intact envelope is important for wound healing after an operation and protection of the bone from contact to the contaminated outside environment.

Playing Tips

Playing tips with Rege Ludwig Positioning in the Saddle Renowned polo coach, Rege Ludwig gives his expert advice on how to get more out of your game Basically speaking, the polo seat is a mobile seat from which the polo horse is asked to execute four distinct manoeuvres: 1 Extend its body to accelerate 2. Shorten its body to decelerate 3. Lean its body left or right to change direction by way of a turn or a lateral move 4. Collect, or compress, its body in preparation of accelerating, decelerating, and/or changing direction. To facilitate the equine player executing any of those manoeuvres, the player on the horse’s back should be adjusting their seat consistent with what the horse is being asked to do, (collect, accelerate, decelerate, or change direction). For my purposes of teaching the riding aspect of playing polo, I have named the four ways the rider should position themselves in the saddle on the horse’s back. Those names are referencing the position of the rider’s hips in the saddle. For the purpose of collecting, or shortening, the horse’s body and stride in preparation of accelerating, decelerating, or changing direction, the rider’s hip position in the saddle should be toward the back of the saddle to where the hips are in the deepest aspect of the seat of the saddle. At the same time, the rider’s upper body should be between straight up to leaning somewhat back so as to apply a supportive pressure onto the horse’s mouth for the purpose of helping the horse shortening its body and stride, i.e., collect.

Seated position

68

Polo Times, May 2022

The tip of the rider’s toes should be directly under, or slightly behind, the center of the rider’s knees. Under those conditions, the rider’s lower legs are back and in contact with the horse’s sides for the purpose of driving the horse’s hind quarters, and back legs, forward and under the horse’s body consistent with the desired degree of collection, or compression, of the horse’s body and stride. I refer to the position of your hips being toward the back of the saddle as being in the Seated Position. From the seated position, lean your upper body forward and down toward the horse’s neck for the purpose of accelerating. When you do, your upper body weight and balance are shifting forward, which causes the horse to shift its balance and weight forward and down to the point that it starts accelerating. As your upper body is leaning forward and down toward the horse’s neck, your upper legs should be gripping more strongly and pushing forward and down into the horse’s shoulders and doing so to the degree that your upper body is leaning forward and down. Under those conditions, your upper legs are effectively pushing the horse forward; thereby, directing the horse to accelerate to the degree to which you are leaning forward and down. Leaning your upper body forward and down to accelerate is affectively rolling your hips approximately a quarter of the way forward in the saddle. Because your hips are now approximately a quarter of the way

forward in the saddle, I refer to the slightly more forward accelerate seat in the saddle as the Quarter Seat. Without a doubt the most significant form of riding, controlling, and playing the polo horse is with your hips half of the way forward in the saddle. I refer to that position in the saddle as being in the half seat. Relative to your hips being half of the way forward in the saddle, they should be there for the purpose of maintaining the speed and/or intensity of whatever maneuver you are currently asking the horse to perform. To get into the half seat from the seated position, your lower legs should move back to where they are just about to contact the horse’s sides. As your lower legs are moving back and somewhat up, they are serving as a counter balancing mechanism to your upper body moving forward and down. As your feet are moving back and up, and your upper body is leaning forward and down, your hips are rolling and sliding forward to the point that the front and lower portion of your pelvic bone is ever so lightly touching the rise of the pommel of the saddle. As you are moving your hips forward in that manner, your upper legs are gripping more and more strongly into the horse’s shoulders. Under those conditions, you are creating the strongest gripping effort you can realize with your upper legs; and, at the same time creating the most secure seat you are capable of realising on the horse’s back.

Quarter Seat (accelerate)

Playing Tips

Half Seat

As long as you maintain the strong upper leg contact into the horse’s shoulders you are capable of moving securely into and out of any of the four riding positions or twelve hitting positions. Another critical point of the half seat position to consider is, your point of balance is more nearly centered over the horse’s point of balance. That, in turn, makes it easier and far more affective for your polo

Knowledge

Full Seat

playing partner to carry you on its back. The last of the four ways of positioning yourself in the saddle is I what I refer to as being in the full seat. The full seat is when your hips have been moved fully forward to the point of your crotch being above the highest point of the pommel of the saddle. With your hips that far forward, and with your upper legs gripping to that degree, you have increased the potential of rotating

your hips and torso, and within the process have maximized the power of the swing, and the angle on which any shot can be hit. Immediately upon the power and the angle of any full seat shot having been realized, you should move back into the easier to maintain half seat and stay there until circumstances dictate that it is time to move into another riding or hitting position.

Smiles & Success for South Africa Whilst England and South Africa went head-to-head on the field, the spectators enjoyed the best hospitality Inanda Polo Club has to offer on the sidelines and with sponsors such as Pernod Ricard Prestige and Stella Artois it was certainly an enjoyable day to remember. In line with this year’s theme of the day of #NewNobility, the crowds were spectacularly dressed to impress. Photography by Shane Doyle Photography Clement Scholtz

Mackenzie Weisz has a string of top titles under his belt belying his youthful years. Despite only being a few months into 2022, Weisz has already claimed The U.S. Open and USPA Gold Cup with Pilot, previous years have included wins on The C.V. Whitney Cup (2020), Metropolitan Cup (2019), Sotogrande Silver Cup Medium Goal (2019) and Thai Polo Cup Argentina (2018). This year sees Weisz return to the English high goal season as part of the King Power line-up What is your biggest passion and why? My biggest passion is Polo. I love the adrenaline, the pressure, the horses and the sport in general. What is your all-time best polo memory? I have many great memories from polo. Which is the beautiful thing about the sport, my best polo memory would be playing and winning a 6 goal tournament about six or seven years ago with my grandpa (Ted Brinkmann), my father (Andres Weisz) and my brother (Christian Weisz).

In particular players like Pelón Stirling, Nico Pieres and Facu Pieres are incredible players and such great people as well, so I’m very lucky and grateful to have played with them and I learned a lot from them.

Favourite song/ album? Bee Gees ‘Spirits Having Flown’, an absolute classic!

Hardest opponent? The one and only Adolfo Cambiaso.

Favourite food/ dish? Anything with steak or fish. Favourite hobby outside of polo? Just polo haha! Most prized possession? My horses. Favourite celebrities and why? Tom Brady, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods; they changed sports and were different. Photograph by Alex Pacheco

Who were/are your favourite teammates? Every single teammate that I have played with has been amazing and I am very lucky.

Which sports do you like outside of polo? Outside of polo I enjoy golf, soccer, tennis, fishing and pretty much all sports.

Photograph by David Lominska

Favourite film and why? Zohan because I grew up watching that movie with my friends and family.

Best holiday destination & activity? I love to go skiing. Best ponies and why? Joya, Piaf and Carma. They are from our breeding operation in Argentina. Are you passionately superstitious? I am not superstitious. Describe yourself in three words… Quiet, hard-working & passionate.
