It was smiles all round for the winners and competitors

School holidays had an added attraction in 2021 as Guards Polo Club, supported by La Martina, hosted a competitive yet fun youth tournament at Smith’s Lawn in mid-August. Twenty young players were divided into two age groups, 13-15 years old and 8-12s. There were some familiar names from the high-goal sprinkled among the five teams such as Toccalino, Monteverde, Muzzio and Araya, highlighting the heritage that is so prevalent in polo. The older competitors, divided into three teams, took part in four chukkas of four minutes each. La Martina won this section and their younger counterparts, the La Martina Minis, won the 8-12s competition after playing three chukkas of five minutes each. Lucio Toccalino, a member of La Martina Minis, was named the Most Valuable Player in the younger category, while the judges could not decide between Estanislao Darritchon (Guards Polo Club) and Juana Lavinia (La Martina) in the senior class. Monterosso’s high goal star Ignacio Toccalino joined La Martina’s Becky Simpson in helping to present the many prizes. However, with the Club providing a postmatch BBQ, this event was as much about having fun playing polo with friends old and new as competing to win.
