Limassol Marina has welcomed its first residents, moored its first yachts, opened its doors to the public and given a new lease of life to the cultural and historical heart of the city.

Marinas are known to revive the areas in which they are developed, increase their popularity on a global scale, entice visitors throughout the seasons and boost the local economy by regenerating surrounding infrastructure and businesses. They have always been regarded as a vehicle to investment and to upgrading the image of a destination by reflecting luxury and wealth through their facilities and services.

A bold and beautiful move

For many decades, here in Cyprus the development of marinas across the southern coast has been deemed an essential part of the strategy to attract quality tourism and increased traffic to the island from land or sea. A shortage of berths, both locally and in the Eastern Mediterranean more broadly, has also contributed to this growing necessity. Located at the crossroads of three continents, a gateway to the Middle East, Cyprus lends itself to this rising market trend and is perfectly positioned to claim its status on the international yachting map. However, a financial commitment of large proportions was long the source of reluctance on the development front. Despite the obvious advantages of location, landscape and climate, few were brave enough to take on the challenge of building the first integrated full-service marina in Cyprus.

Eventually, on 25 January 2008, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus entered into a lease agreement with Limassol Marina Ltd in relation to the development, operation, administration and management of Limassol Marina. An addendum agreement was subsequently signed on 25 January 2010, and construction work began towards the end of April that year in a rundown, neglected part of Limassol town’s coastline. Now, just over four years later, Limassol Marina has welcomed its first residents, moored its first yachts, opened its doors to the public and given a new lease of life to the cultural and historical heart of the city.

Limassol Marina Ltd was formed by a group of developers, construction companies and investors, with ample specialist knowledge and proven experience to take on the groundbreaking masterplan development and complete it successfully. Still on board after a stretch of turbulent years for the world economy and the image of Cyprus, the shareholder companies are standing by this unique product with the same resilience and conviction that is reflected in the boat arrivals and the steady property sales – now around ₏130 million. Ever since Limassol Marina’s masterplan was unveiled to the public, this magnificent project has been making noise in the market, both in Cyprus and beyond. By contrast, Mr Andreas Christodoulides has been quietly involved in the development process, until his official appointment as CEO on 1 April 2014, well in time for the official opening of Limassol Marina’s commercial area. So, who is Andreas Christodoulides, why was he the captain of choice for Limassol Marina, and what makes him tick?

In keeping with his diverse professional track record, Mr Christodoulides is no newcomer to the marine environment. A navy seal during his compulsory military service and an engineering and business graduate from London, he was recruited by ATC as a site engineer when the new Sheraton hotel and marina in Limassol were being built. Responsible for examining and supervising construction progress above and below sea level, he saw the Sheraton Marina through to its completion in 1986. By 1993 Mr Christodoulides was appointed Operations Director by the owning company. Part of his duties involved monthly visits to the hotel exhibitions and boat shows all over Europe, where he was also integral to the acquisition of the boat and yacht agencies for Sunseeker and the Ferretti group. Combine the experience of marina and hotel management with selling and managing yachts, and you would think that Mr Christodoulides had ‘arrived’ at his career destination. But there’s more… In 2000 he moved to Francoudi & Stephanou Ltd as the General Manager of a reputable and diverse group of companies established in 1895, one that held everything from travel agencies to hotels, shipping and insurance, the biggest portfolio of liqueurs and spirits – and an internet provider company that grew into PrimeTel, the biggest private telecommunications company in Cyprus. In addition to his role as Operations Director of PrimeTel, Mr Christodoulides was also General Manager of Francoudi & Stephanou as a group, and Director of F&S Marinas – the company set up to manage and operate the marina side of

He says: “It is the culmination of everything I have learned and all the experience I have accumulated over the years. I am extremely fortunate to be taking over the reins at such an exciting stage of the project’s development. The General and Project Managers and their teams have successfully delivered a luxury marina destination that I am only too proud to undertake as it moves into its operational phase.” There was one thing he – and everyone else – had not experienced before: the global economic crisis. In 2010, in the midst of meltdowns across Europe, Limassol Marina was selling properties off-plan. The CEO says: “We didn’t panic, because we had the backing and support of the most established companies on the island. But the fact is, our budget and action plans were based on figures and trends registered in the period from 2006 to 2010,” – the golden days of the Cyprus property market… “For a while we thought that Cyprus would be immune to the crisis,” he continues, but March 2013 rattled the Cyprus economy at its very foundations.

Fortunately, with the marine works already completed, there was no turning back for Limassol Marina. It became an official Port of Entry, welcomed its first yachts and achieved €30million in property sales and reservations from May to December 2013. “One of the reasons we are still sitting in our offices is that Limassol Marina is unique in this part of the world,” he says. “Its location, its proximity to the town’s cultural centre and the sea are hugely enticing factors when looking for a second home – whether this is on shore or on board. Most marinas are in isolated areas. Not only are flight connections to Cyprus and travel distances to Limassol extremely convenient, but also the fact that we are adjacent to a vibrant cosmopolitan city.” Limassol Marina is the only new masterplan development in the Med providing private berths for yachts up to 60m directly attached to exclusive villas. Combined with the Marina and its commercial facilities, the CEO is confident that the product will continue to create a new market for Cyprus, and one that is long overdue. “This is where the fun begins for all of us here as a team. Limassol Marina will rely on its community atmosphere to continue bringing in these results. We used to depend heavily on effective marketing campaigns to communicate the reality of the project’s progress. Now, the product is tangible and can sell itself!”

Maintaining high standards

Mr Christodoulides knows it too well: being the most sought-after destination is one thing; meeting expectations and maintaining standards is another. “Now we have to ensure, without compromise, that every aspect of the project meets the same high standards for all our clients consistently. There is no room for inadequacy.” And given the CEO’s hands-on approach, can-do and will-do attitude combined with his track record, Limassol Marina, its residents and visitors are all in the best of hands.

MAKING HISTORY Cyprus enters a superyacht era

In a year of successes, Limassol Marina has welcomed the largest vessel to ever sail into a private marina in Cyprus. The stunning 88.5m M/Y Nirvana arrived in April, exactly one year after the official Port of Entry welcomed its first yachts and just months after welcoming 75m M/Y Anastasia. In a brief stopover for a bunkering operation of over 130,000 litres of diesel, the captain and crew made use of the on-site facilities and services before enjoying some time in Limassol. Boasting a capacity of 650 berths, for yachts up to 115m, Limassol Marina is the first superyacht marina in Cyprus. As such, it has opened a new market for our island and is already enticing yachts that have rarely been able to approach the south coast due to the lack of adequate berthing facilities.

Living on the sea through a lens

The lead-up to the operation of the commercial area at Limassol Marina created an inherent need to portray the reality of living, yachting, dining and shopping on the sea. It was time to tell a story – one that truly reflects the essence of the brand. Given the unique setting of Limassol Marina and the fact that a picture tells a thousand words, the ideal language for the story led to a powerful, professional and persuasive photo shoot. A carefully selected team of talented individuals from Cyprus and beyond was called upon to execute what has now become the new face of Limassol. Local photographer Nikolas Michael, with a successful career in fashion and photography, was supported by a hand-picked team of stylist, make-up artist, art directors and models, to help him bring the storyboard to life. Against the backdrop of the sparkling Mediterranean and its surrounding landscape, the results are simply stunning.

Cyprus in the

spotlight John Defterios and the team behind CNN’s One Square Meter arrived in Cyprus recently to document the progress of what they have described as ‘a luxury yachting destination’ – the first in Cyprus to manage superyachts and to attract an emerging nautical tourism market. Symbolising the churn of cement and the echo of construction around Limassol Marina as ‘the sound of survival’, the feature focuses on the sense of stability and success mirrored in the increasing property sales figures and the various stages of the development’s completion. With a contribution from the Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, the short film highlights the benefits to the economy and tourism as a whole, with a positive outlook on Limassol’s future as an international investment hub.

Music with a view Limassol Marina, the exclusive host

Undoubtedly one of the most exciting dates on the annual calendar, the Monaco Yacht Show will once again attract high net worth individuals and luxury yachting professionals from around the world when it opens its gates to the public in September. With over 500 major exhibiting companies, 105 spectacular super and megayachts afloat and an average of 33,000 participants, it is a unique occasion to network and discover the very latest in luxury products, services and events.

Once a warehouse used to store carobs – known as the ‘black gold of Cyprus’ for their export appeal – the listed building of Tracasol at Limassol Marina dates back to the early 19th century. Its convenient location, a few steps from the Old Port, made it ideal storage space for a variety of goods, as well as fertiliser. Renovated as part of the Limassol Marina masterplan, it now houses a marine training school and a cultural centre with multi-purpose function rooms for exhibitions, conferences and events. The venue has already hosted charity events, private functions and children’s festivals.

The icing on the cake

BalconyTV, a non-profit initiative, a window to the local music scene and to the beautiful town of Limassol, was recently launched in Cyprus. The leading daily online viral music show features promising or established artists performing on balconies around the world, giving them the opportunity to present their original songs and gain worldwide exposure. Filmed in cooperation with Soundscape Studios and produced by Darren Casey, BalconyTV Cyprus takes place on Limassol Marina’s Harbour Master terrace in the heart of the €350 million development. Speaking of the Cyprus launch, its host Sophia Paraskeva, Marketing and PR Manager of Limassol Marina, said: “The producers of BalconyTV Cyprus are talented artists themselves, with a passion for music and a genuine desire to help promote local singer songwriters. To be able to offer this fantastic opportunity from the balcony of Limassol Marina is hugely gratifying. The atmosphere here is unrivalled. Limassol Marina will be attending the show for the 5th consecutive year this September, raising further awareness of Cyprus and Limassol as a new destination for luxury travel and superyachts. Given the pivotal role of culture and entertainment within the vibrant marina community, the cultural centre aims to include a variety of exhibits, rotating galleries, shows and functions to boost the city centre’s annual calendar of events. The centre will be working closely with the local municipality and other active groups to attract visitors and tourists throughout the year.

Every berth has access to fresh water, electricity, fibre optic network providing high-speed broadband, high-speed wireless internet, telephone and IPTV, fuel and waste removal, as well as crew facilities. There are also haul-out and shore-side technical facilities, a chandlery, a 10,000m² boatyard for light repairs and maintenance, served by a 100-ton travel lift, 40-ton trailer and slipway. The fuel station, buggy service and helipad are available for bookings. Providing security and berthing assistance, the 24-hour professional marina staff are well equipped to respond to all on-board or on-shore requests.

A FIRST FOR CYPRUS SAILING Nireas at Limassol Marina

Designed by Maurizio Cossutti, this carbon-fiber, epoxy-built Maxi racer features a sail area-to-displacement ratio that is nearly off the charts. With an adjustable keel, rotating mast and forward daggerboards, Nireas is one of the marvels of the Open Class. Now in Marseille, she is preparing for a 1,500 NM journey to Limassol Marina. Helmsman Mike Papacharidemou, a familiar face around Limassol Marina, is a Cypriot yachtsman and professional sailor with multiple accolades in international sailing at championship level and over 40,000 NM as a skipper. Bringing a local crew together to form the Nireas Sailing Team, he has already identified young and talented sailors based in Cyprus, most with roots in Limassol, to join him in the upcoming training.

The power of a tweet Following another successful year of sales, the highly anticipated launch of Dioni Residences took place in April. The 14 luxury apartments are in the heart of Limassol Marina, overlooking the main square and adjacent to its elegant shops and boutiques. From Concept to Berth As an advocate of soft architecture, Xavier Bohl, the brain behind the Limassol Marina masterplan, talks about the underlying ideals of such a vast urban project that was designed to maintain the traditional architecture and culture of the historical town. As Limassol Marina continues on its path towards final completion, Xavier Bohl eagerly anticipates the overall outcome as his designs gradually shift from paper to real life. “We had dreams… we envisaged the results with passion; and today the project has ‘escaped’ from our control,” Bohl reveals, as he attempts to define how Limassol Marina has taken on a life of its own, detached from the drawing board. “It’s the people of Limassol, the people of Cyprus and the yachtsmen themselves who will determine what it finally becomes.” Designed by Artelia Cyprus Ltd – A.F. Modinos & S.A. Vrahimis architects and engineers joint venture, in association with Atelier Xavier Bohl, the €350 million project is determined to bring a stagnant part of Limassol’s marine façade back to life. Reviving harbours and consequently cities around them has been accomplished in many cities around the world. “Marseille, Barcelona, Haifa… these were cities which were cut off from their harbours for reasons of customs and barriers, and today, we’re trying to reopen these cities and reconnect them with their harbours,” says Bohl as he recollects the exchange of outlook that is the result of the more than decade-long collaboration with his Cyprus partners. “Working

on this project for 11 years now means a lot to us. We’ve adopted a new way of seeing things and new ways of thinking in a culture that wasn’t our own. I believe these feelings are mutual; we brought some of our experiences from France to Cyprus too,” says Bohl. This exchange of experiences on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea is comparable to what any harbour has to offer. Bohl says, “A harbour is inevitably an opening to the world; it’s a location where people come on their boats and join the people on land.” Specialising in projects by the sea, Bohl has a distinguished portfolio that includes the creation of ports, marinas and lakeside towns. The completion of Port Grimaud near Saint Tropez, a lakeside town with houses that can be linked to their boats, is perhaps one of Bohl’s most representative designs. Mr Takis Palekythritis, General Manager of Real Estate at Limassol Marina, says: “Based on Port Grimaud in the South of France, they instantly grasped the concept we aspired to achieve; their contribution and knowledge was integral to the fruition of something so unique for Cyprus.” Yet guiding all his aspirations is something Bohl refers to as an intimacy between architecture and sea.

“The originality of our projects is to mix the mainland with the sea; to have fingers of sea entering the mainland and fingers of the mainland entering the sea in a way that creates intimacy between the water and the docks, the buildings and architecture,” says Bohl.

A sustainable integration

Bohl is the first to admit he was seduced by the architectural traditions of the old town.

Envisioning it as the most exclusive marina resort in the Mediterranean, Bohl is the first to admit he was seduced by the architectural traditions of the old town. In fact, it is this very historical support that initiated the idea to connect the town centre – with the existing harbour and its medieval castle – to the marina and the public spaces created within and around it. As an advocate of soft architecture, Bohl insists that avoiding any brutal intervention and ensuring that the groundwork on location is pursued with as much delicacy and sobriety as possible is essential. Of course “any big urban project such as building a marina cannot but violate nature and the local environment to some extent. For example, backfilling on the sea in order to create the peninsula or the island is inevitably a tremendous change to the seafront, but we try to soften the edges as much as we can,” Bohl explains. However, maintaining the existing architectural style, respecting the culture of the country and

consequently placing the urban environment around the marina under the microscope goes beyond renovating the character of a maritime town of the past. “Trying to imagine a sustainable future was the way forward; because if we designed buildings based on international architecture, that wouldn’t have been interesting. We would have the same standardised buildings one can see on the Spanish or French coast and other places,” Bohl explains. Clearly, he was interested in taking the project beyond the ordinary. After all, Bohl’s team has always valued the original characteristics of any location they have worked in. “When we built in Egypt, we built Egyptian; when we built in Italy we tried to build Italian. In Provence, Port Grimaud is very much inspired by the local architecture.” Bohl recognises the value of preserving the characteristic features of each location. “Initially, the limited surface available on the mainland and the ample space available for laying out the harbour on sea prompted us to try and make the sea enter the mainland. But we were also adamant to backfill into the sea, to reclaim land and bring the mainland into the sea. Eventually we created a peninsula of sorts, as well as an island and a new coast in order to multiply the lines of the sea coast.” It is through the public areas within the marina that Bohl foresees a reconnection to the heart of Limassol. “Limassol benefits from its promenade; but for years the town itself was cut off from the harbour. So we started with the renovation of the fishing harbour first, and then the marina, in order to link historical monuments – such as the carob museum and the castle – with all that Limassol Marina will provide,” concludes Bohl. Mr Takis Palekythritis, says, “As a designer, Xavier is a great believer in the human element of a project and its harmonious integration with the local architecture and community. Limassol Marina is a natural extension of the heart of the city.” Bohl agrees, “Limassol Marina will become the beating heart of the town of Limassol,” but at the same time, he acknowledges the complexity of pumping any heart, whether that of a marina, a sailor, a resident or visitor.

Sleek looks disguise the yacht’s enormous interior, which offers considerably more volume than rivals of the same length. A single central staircase links all three decks, its central atrium cascading natural light down from the sundeck. The owner’s suite is an impressive 26ft (8m) wide. Clever fold-down balconies open out on both sides of the saloon to create a spectacular living area, and in the lower accommodation there are four en-suite guest cabins, including a huge double VIP stateroom which spans the full width of the hull. Alternatively, Princess can configure this area with five cabins, splitting the full-beam VIP into two spacious double en-suites.

On-Board Opulence

The yacht’s deceptively voluminous design, which

allows for some 2.13m (7ft) of headroom throughout the accommodation areas, gives the 40M a more spacious interior than virtually any other vessel in its class. Placing the full-beam owner’s stateroom on the main deck gives it the benefit of big, bright windows, while also ensuring maximum space and comfort for guest accommodation down below, where the standard layouts offer either four or five cabins. The midships VIP suite actually boasts more floor area than the owner’s stateroom, while there is also the option to replace one of the guest cabins with a gym, a study or even a cinema. The fold-down balconies in the saloon, one to each side, transform the main deck into a spectacular area for entertaining or relaxation. Its seating and dining areas are looked after by the main galley and its attendant service pantry, with a dumb waiter serving the two decks above. The huge transom door that opens to reveal the tender garage is decked with teak, to create a fun ‘beach club’ watersports platform at the stern,

Trained at the Culinary Institute of America, and with work experience gained at the French Laundry, Sheraton and Westin and W Hotels, Skarmoutsos returned to Greece to focus on Cretan cuisine. The Golden Toque and Gourmet awards speak for themselves, though most will remember him as a judge on the Greek ‘Master Chef’ TV programme, or as the author of a series of cookbooks. His credentials add a luminous modern Greek aura to the menu, and his all-day restaurant/café menu truly has it all: the classic

Wagamama: simply Asian satisfaction

Wagamama may be new to Limassol, but Nicosia and Paphos have already welcomed and endorsed its Japanese inspired cuisine. In fact, wagamama is not strictly Japanese, but rather more broadly Asian, with influences from India, China and Thailand. You can think of it as a snapshot of the casual kitchens of the Far East. While the menu leans heavily toward noodles of various sizes and diameters, it’s certainly not limited to them. Sushi, tatakis and sashimi can be ordered for one or in platters to share; meat, chicken and seafood blend into context with a variety of side dishes and familiar as well as more exotic vegetables. Soups, salads and desserts… oh, the desserts… they all have that exotic touch that gives each bite its distinct wagamama flavour.

Speaking of flavour, at wagamama it’s the flipside of freshness; and because seeing is believing, wagamama chefs do not work in hiding. Their ingredients, their woks, their spotless worktops and their gifted hands working at high speed are all in the forefront where you can see for yourself what goes into your order, and how. It’s also your guarantee that your dish is being prepared just for you, the instant your order leaves your lips and is beamed to the chef. What’s on the drinks menu? The Asian identity demands sake, but you can also choose wine, beer or your regular soft drink. The health factor is squeezed into fresh fruit and/or vegetable juices that will sign off your vitamin requirements – not to mention the taste. Ask any wagamama guest, and you’ll soon discover that a visit to wagamama is more than just a solution to hunger. Derlicious is synonymous with a casual, local and fun place to share traditional Greek favourites combined with jovial Cypriot hospitality.

Launched in London in 1992, wagamama came, saw and conquered 17 countries around the world with its unpretentious character and strictly controlled quality and procedures. By 2002, various awards started rolling in. The basic philosophy of wagamama is ‘good food, great experience, affordable prices’. But if you think that’s all marketing-speak, test it yourself and you’ll realise it’s different, it’s unique, and you’ll love it.

Derlicious: Aegean winners

No, it’s not a misprint. The name Derlicious is actually a cross between the English word ‘delicious’ and the Greek word ‘derlikono’, which could be loosely translated as ‘overindulge’. In other words, ‘delicious’ is an understatement that doesn’t do justice to what’s on the menu; and the menu is a tribute to grilled treats. For many in Athens, Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos, Derlicious is the instinctive response to the ‘I-need-my-souvlaki-NOW!’ urge – or the Greek gyros equivalent. Indeed, Derlicious takes these classics beyond regular standards with a

choice of saucy taste enhancers tucked into a Greek or Cyprus pita pocket. Some like to call it the souvlaki boutique, serving both the pork and chicken version. But that’s just the tip of iceberg… or, rather, the skewer. Scan the menu and you’ll find irresistible grilled meat platters, pork chops and chicken, with all the requisite dips and salads, and of course the potato element. If you’re afraid the emphasis on meat will scare away a vegetarian companion, no need to panic. The sizzling grill will oblige with veggie burgers, grilled halloumi, mushrooms and various other vegetables, as well as shamelessly crisp onion rings. To complete the local concept, the interior is traditional, both overall and in various details. Stone floors, white paint strokes and woven rush chair seats echo Cyprus and Greek Island culture. Images of village coffee shops or island taverns come to mind – along with the relaxed and informal ambience that simply says: “Come in, unwind… nothing beats a hearty meal shared with friends.”

Although the first Derlicious address opened in Athens in 2007, it was soon followed by parallels in Cyprus. Here the name is synonymous with a casual, local, and fun place to share traditional Greek favourites combined with jovial Cypriot hospitality.

Caffè Nero: the authentic Italian pick-me-up

Not just residents of Cyprus, but anyone who has spent more than two hours on the island is distinctly aware of our contemporary café culture. ‘Going out for a coffee’ is as broad a term as ‘living’ itself. It may or may not involve that dark and aromatic grind. It stands alone or follows a meal. It could have a romantic dimension, or a business background. BUILDING DREAMS

For any large-scale development to succeed, the right foundations need to be in place from the very beginning. Literally. Step forward J&P Group who have been laying the foundations of success since 1941.

W

hen Stelios Joannou and George E. Paraskevaides formed their partnership in Cyprus in the early 40s, little did they know that it would eventually flourish into one of the largest and most reputable international contractors globally – the J&P Group. While the island has long appealed to homebuyers from abroad, the recent financial stress took its toll on the market. But the winds of change are now blowing, not only across Limassol Marina, but across Cyprus as a whole.

Limassol Marina has, in many ways, been the catalyst for upgrading the Cyprus property market.

Property sales in Cyprus for the first five months of 2014 showed an encouraging rise in numbers over the same period last year, driven by an increase in international demand. However it’s the high end of the market, as statistics show, that continues to appeal to overseas buyers: rather than aiming for seasonal tourist venues, their interest generally centres on cosmopolitan towns and cities which are active year-round. What better example is there than Limassol – the island’s second largest city, a commercial hub on the coast with superb facilities, connectivity and surroundings. The gentle recovery of the Cyprus real estate market is good news, indicating the return of international confidence in the island after the financial crisis which dominated so much of the world’s news in 2013. Michalis Hadjipanayiotou is the CEO of Cybarco Development, the company behind Limassol Marina’s management and its property sales. He says: “The development of Limassol Marina has, in many ways, been the catalyst for upgrading the Cyprus property market and buyers’ expectations, as well as attracting a different calibre of buyer to the island.” Private buyers are being joined by big overseas investors.

The institutional investors, Michalis adds, “search for unique commercial and/or mixed use developments that stand out”, and the island’s approach to new large-scale projects has changed. “Cooperation between the public and private sector has proven highly successful in the case of Limassol Marina, but there is certainly a need to see a change in the pace of decision-making and implementation. Attracting clientele of this calibre requires efficiency for a more customer-friendly experience.”

Dioni Residences apartments were released in April, and by May, 70% had already been sold. The first phase of the Peninsula Villas is due for delivery by the end of 2014. The Island Villas are already under construction and apartments at Castle Residences will be released next year. Michalis says: “This past year has shown that customers are now looking for completed or close to completion luxury properties that are part of a masterplan development and in prime locations with proximity to the sea. With sales in excess of €130 million, Limassol Marina symbolises the need for a tangible product when it comes to decision-making in the current climate.” It is also the most exciting place for buyers to turn their dreams into reality.

Cyprus has always been, and will continue to be, a vital part of Mediterranean history. From antiquity and the trade of copper, to the Middle Ages and the trade routes, all acknowledge Cyprus’s important role in navigation and trade. Today, it continues to play a significant geopolitical role in the making of Europe. Nested, and at first sight isolated, on the edge of the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus remained for ages the necessary port of call for ships linking western Europe with the enchanting world of the Near East. Its geographical and geopolitical position gave the island a particularity, a certain character that is still evident today; one that fluctuates between archaism and conservatism, but with an ability to absorb all those foreign elements that came together on its territory.

History of the island’s harbours

The harbours of Cyprus, from antiquity to the present day, have been part of a broader tradition, that of the other harbours of the Mediterranean and the Levantine coast. They follow the same traditions, they are on the sea routes that connect the Aegean and the West with the East, and they exist as parts of a chain of other harbours on which they depend. In the 15th century, for instance, Europe’s strong interest in the enthralling faraway discoveries of the new world meant that Cyprus was left out of events, at the mercy of the Ottoman conquerors, acquiring in this sense its pragmatic dimensions. Very often in history, harbours and towns that flourished in the past suddenly disappear off the map, with the result that places that once teemed with life as a result of trade and human contact are suddenly abandoned and forgotten. This phenomenon is reversed in Cyprus. A plethora of documents and references to the history of the island’s harbours exist. They constitute irrefutable proof of the continuity of civilisation and of the strange and characteristic feature of the Cypriot people to the past and their particular commitment to it. A vivid example of this continuity of history is the city and harbour of Famagusta, the Key and the Heart of Cyprus during the medieval period. Today’s city and harbour stand where the ancient Bronze Age site of Enkomi once stood. Later on, Enkomi becomes Roman Salamis, followed by Arsinoe of the Ptolemies, and Constantia of

the Byzantines. The same can be said about the ancient harbour of Kition and the presentday harbour of Larnaca, as well as the harbour of Amathus and the harbour of Limassol, the ancient harbour of Palaepaphos and the modern one of today. The naval tradition of ancient Cyprus is an indisputable fact. The first harbours were created around protected shores of bays, little anchorages at first. Later on in history, important harbours came to be, like Enkomi, that held the leading role for the export of copper during antiquity. Famous geographers mention the harbours of Cyprus during late antiquity; Greek geographer Strabo (64 BC-21 AD) mentions 17 ports and anchorages, whereas Plinius (1st century AD) mentions 11, and Ptolemy (2nd century AD) refers to 19.

The naval tradition of ancient Cyprus is an indisputable fact. From navigation to shipbuilding

Reference is found in Homer’s Iliad, when Kinyras, the King of Paphos, promised Menelaus 50 ships. We know that the Cypriots offered Alexander the Great 120 ships, and together with the navy of the island and its engineers they contributed to the conquest of Tyre. The lush forests, the island’s geographical location, its natural harbours, the intensity and the direction of the winds, all contributed to the glory of the island’s harbours. Large numbers of terracotta models of ships found on the island depict reality in miniature. Men of war, trading vessels, and vases with painting of war ships, all indicate the important naval role of the island during antiquity. The shipwreck of Kerynia dating to 300 BC, which was found in excellent condition off the little harbour of Kyrenia, enriched our knowledge on boat building traditions and confirmed the trade of goods with other islands of the Mediterranean.

While the original shipwreck rests in the castle of the Kyrenia harbour, three replicas have been built, with the most recent one – Kerynia Liberty – standing proud at Limassol Marina. Construction of Kerynia Liberty began in 2002, respecting the original design but with modern techniques. The ship was ready for the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece and set sail for Athens with a symbolic cargo of copper to be used for the Olympic bronze medals. Today, under the direction of the Mayor of Kyrenia, Glafkos Cariolou (the son of the late Andreas Cariolou who found the shipwreck), it is used for experimental sailing along the coast of Cyprus.

The island as a port of call

The distance between Cyprus and the maritime cities of Egypt, Syria, Armenia, Turkey and Greece does not exceed one day of navigation. Thus, during its turbulent history, Cyprus was a resting point after a long journey, the place to pick up new supplies and a new cargo, an opportunity for a quick visit to monuments and sites before setting off for one’s final destination. The island has always been along the trade routes, either for transit trade or for pilgrimages to the Holy Land, or even for strategic and military purposes of certain expansionist powers. This applied both during antiquity, the Classical period, the Byzantine period, as well as the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period, including present times. The sea routes followed by Mediterranean travellers remained essentially the same from antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. Coastal travel was the frequent way of travelling. Only rarely did a boat deliberately lose sight of the shore, and only a storm could drive it off course. Coastal travel presupposes a good knowledge of land, of high mountains that bring heavy showers and strong winds. A good sailor who chooses to go along the coast must know where rivers join the sea, where to find a safe haven if a storm strikes. He should know the waters, the rocks, the reefs, and the currents if he is to land on sand or on rocks. Therefore, it is along these routes, much the same today as they were in antiquity, that harbours, havens and anchorages, were created. They are found around the coastline of the island, and they provide travellers with the necessary services, such as water, supplies, wood, labour for loading and unloading.

A harbour is a large and colourful meeting place, an opportunity to buy and sell, to exchange, to acquire information, not just material goods but also to hear and capture different opinions, thoughts and mentalities. It is an opportunity to rest after a long journey, but it is also a place to wait for the right wind on which the journey depends. This kind of sailing transformed the geography of coastal regions, became the excuse for the birth of new villages and towns, and entire civilisations.

Ancient “periploi”, medieval portolan maps and English pilots

The knowledge we have today about harbours and anchorages derives from the old navigation maps the known “periploi” of antiquity, or the “portolan” maps, of the medieval period, to be followed later on by the English pilots or rutters. Richly adorned and decorated, real works of art sometimes, these maps were used by the navigators to explore the island. They were the guides to safe anchorages and above all to port cities were goods were provided. The development and spread of Portolan maps

is mainly due to the increased nautical and trade influence of Italian maritime towns of the Eastern Mediterranean as well as all over the Aegean and the Black Sea. These hand-drawn maps were made especially for navigators, but were also manuals for merchants, travellers or investors who had an interest in the long trade expeditions. They usually contained information on the harbours, on safe or treacherous waters, on anchorages, passages, drinking water, on the possibility of exchanges with the natives, on friendly or hostile attitude to the ship, on inhabited or deserted areas, on important monuments and other special geographic features. Black ink is used to draw the coastlines, while place names are written in red ink. Black dots indicate rocks, while red dots indicate shallow and sandy areas. The language is Italian and the cartographer lets his imagination run free in drawing the background which is usually covered with decorative symbols, illustrations of towns, sea monsters and ships. All this valuable information provided by these maps leads to one conclusion: Cyprus was and still is a vital location for trade and relations, and the future will prove the strategic importance of the island in the Mediterranean world.
