Working to continuously enhance the yachting experience, Limassol Marina has launched a new, hassle-free Trailer Boat Park experience. Available for vessels of up to 10m, the facility and service offers covered or uncovered boat storage ashore, just a few metres from the Marina’s private slipway. Bookable ahead of time, with boats ready at the agreed time, the service takes care of launch and recovery. STEP BACK IN TIME
Limassol Marina hosted the legendary frigate ‘Shtandart’ last year, inviting guests onboard in order to step 300 years back in time and participate in two days of thrilling activities, such as steering or sailing the ship and climbing the rig.
The historic vessel is an exact replica of the 1703 warship used by Peter the Great to defend St. Petersburg. Hand-built in 1999 by the crew behind the Pirates of the Caribbean’s ‘Black Pearl’, she has been sailing ever since, operating as a living museum and a sail-training vessel, and featuring in over 20 movies. The replica vessel is a pillar of 'Project Shtandart', whose aim is to develop the skills and selfreliance of youth.
FIRST-TIME PARTICIPANTS
Sanlorenzo presents distinctive fleet of iconic motor yachts
Sanlorenzo Cyprus participated in the Limassol Boat Show for the first time in October 2022. The exclusive representative of Sanlorenzo Yachts on the island dealer presented two distinctive models from its yacht fleet, namely the asymmetrical SL102A and the semi-displacement navetta SD96.
The SL102A was the first-ever asymmetrical motor yacht from the Sanlorenzo shipyard, as well as the nautical industry as a whole. The result of a successful collaboration between car designer Chris Bangle and Bernardo Zuccon – who designed the exterior lines - the SL102A reimagines the canonical yacht layout to allow greater usability of the interior spaces and a better connection with the exterior. Meanwhile, the SD96 is the first model in the revamped semi-displacement line. Built across three decks, yet with the lightweight elegance of a two-deck yacht, the SD96 is character ised by carefully-studied proportions, a balanced design and flexible interiors that evolve and adapt to the needs of its inhabitants.

JAMIE OLIVER KITCHEN
Marina welcomes new culinary outlet
GOING GREEN TOGETHER
Limassol Marina hosted another successful two-day Going Green Together event in September 2022, to contribute to a cleaner environment and provide education around the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
The first Jamie Oliver Kitchen in Cyprus opened at Limassol Marina earlier this year, inviting diners to delight in a holistic dining experience. Cooked in the signature style of the restaurant’s eponymous founder and world-renowned chef, the menu combines international dishes with local Cypriot flavours. Diners are spoilt for choice with a range of pastas, pizzas, burgers, salads, kids’ dishes and Jamie’s famous desserts.
Located right on the waterfront with stunning views of the harbour, the space features a buzzing bar and open kitchen, delivering a relaxed, yet vibrant feel that caters to every mood and moment - from morning coffee or a light al fresco lunch on the wooden deck, to sundowner cocktails and elegant candlelit dinners.
The event included a series of interactive, family-friendly activities, games, workshops and a live-art installation. In addition, a ‘Clean the sea with your SUP’ activity saw participants clean litter from the surface of the water, while the Marina’s diving team picked up rubbish from the seabed.
SUP clean-up experiences are now held throughout the year, in keeping with the Marina’s wider objective to reduce its environmental footprint and boost ocean conservation. Relaunched since June 2022, this much-loved activity helps to create a healthier ecosystem and cleaner seas for marine life.
A COMPLETED SUCCESS STORY
Completion of Castle Residences marks Limassol Marina completion
Some 15 years in its envisioning, planning and meticulous implementation, the ground-breaking vision of the Limassol Marina has now been fully realised, thanks to the completion of Castle Residences, marking the completion of the project’s final phase.
Located on a private island and accessible only by a secure bridge, the luxurious apartment complex is surrounded by water on all sides, bringing an elevated meaning to ‘living on the sea’. From this exclusive vantage point, as the only Cyprus properties built on the sea, Castle Residences delivers uninterrupted panoramic views of the Mediterranean, the Marina, and the city of Limassol beyond. In fact, as one of Limassol’s most coveted real-estate addresses, these ready-to-move-in homes are a gateway to a thriving cosmopolitan lifestyle, right in the heart of the city. That said, with direct access to the Marina’s premium facilities and services, including toptier F&B offerings, a world-class gym, and a private golden sandy beach, residents have everything they could need, on their doorstep.
The beautiful properties themselves reflect their prestigious location, with 61 striking two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments and maisonettes designed in alignment with the same elegant properties as the rest of the project. All residences feature covered and uncovered terraces or sundecks, while residents also enjoy exclusive use of a swimming pool and pool terrace overlooking the sea. With more than 82 percent of the Castle Residences apartments being sold, these are the last apartments available for sale at Limassol Marina, and the only ones on the sea in Cyprus.
With the project’s completion, a new chapter in the Marina’s success story now begins. Complementing the existing portfolio of exquisite villas and residences, Castle Residences seals the Limassol Marina’s holistic lifestyle offering, making way for a fresh era of evolution and enhancement at Cyprus’ first superyacht marina.

DREAM DESTINATION
With only a few units of its exclusive properties left for sale, Cybarco Development CEO Michalis Hadjipanayiotou reflects on the Marina’s completion, explaining why the heart of new Limassol makes investors skip a beat
text by Mateo Jarrin Cuvi LivingIf one had to rank Cyprus’ success stories, Limassol’s award-winning Marina would top most lists, thanks to the execution of its ground-breaking masterplan. Other than its premier superyacht facilities and world-class amenities, the allure of its residential offering has exceeded all expectations. As we prepare to step out of 2022, all but three villas and 11 apartments from its exclusive Castle Residenc es remain for purchase, and what began in 2010 as a magnificent vision, is fast becoming the dawn of a new era.
No one is better placed to reflect on this clos ing of one chapter and opening of the next, than Michalis Hadjipanayiotou, CEO of Cybarco Devel opment, a leader in the island’s luxury construc tion and development industry, and one of six companies that took on the formidable challenge of delivering the Marina, having been responsible for sales of its upscale residences from the start.
“Limassol Marina is a proud landmark project for the island and region, one that has put Cyprus on the international yachting and luxury tourism map,” comments Michalis, even though, at the
time, the €400-million development was held by some to be a grand folly. “People thought we were crazy,” he recalls. “Ten years ago, we were selling a dream, and people would tell us we didn’t understand what it would take to build a superyacht marina in Cyprus.”
Delivering On A Promise
Yet not only did Cybarco and its group of part ner companies hold true to their commitment, they competed at a global scale to cater to the market’s trends. The consortium’s aim, says Michalis, was to pool their combined knowl edge, pay heed to their clients’ desires, and “deliver on our promise”.
Just over a decade later, that promise has been honoured, with not only a much-covet ed 5 Gold Anchor Platinum Award among the Marina’s accolades, but also €500 million in residential contracts signed off on almost all of its 211 luxury apartments, and 74 gorgeous vil las with private berths or direct access to the sea. Today, as a regional and international hub for the yachting sector, with 650 yacht berths, the Marina provides a Mediterranean home to
boats of up to 110m in length, welcoming more than 9,000 yacht arrivals per year, 300 of them superyachts. It also draws over 4,000 visitors weekly, while capitalising on its location as the heart of the new Limassol.
An Irresistible Location
Unsurprisingly, over recent years, high-networth individuals from over 50 countries, who have flocked to its high-end shopping, upscale eateries, deluxe spa, and busy calendar of cul tural events, not to mention, its proximity to a thriving metropolis, have also invested in the Marina, with the purchase of either a permanent or second residence here.
According to Michalis, there have been Mari na visitors who have disembarked, intending only to grab a quick lunch, yet ultimately ended up buying a property, packing their bags, and moving here permanently. The power of this al lure is even more impressive when considering that, in spite of owning prime real estate all over the world, the Marina’s cosmopolitan residents choose to call their Island Villa or Castle Resi dences apartment, home.
“Limassol Marina is a proud landmark project for the island and region, one that has put Cyprus on the international yachting and luxury tourism map.”Michalis Hadjipanayiotou, CEO of Cybarco Development, reflects on Limassol Marina’s remarkable first chapter and the long-term goals for the future.
“You don’t realise its beauty and convenience until you have experienced living with the sea at your doorstep.” The truly unique concept and unrivalled product is still mesmerising for all res idents. There is nothing quite like the location.
Convenience is, indeed, an irresistible dimen sion of the Marina’s appeal. Its expert onsite team oversee management and maintenance of villas, apartments and boats, while also han dling property rentals seamlessly. And a simple call to central reception fulfils lifestyle requests of residents, guests and visitors from across the apartments, villas and berths. From dining and leisure reservations, to housekeeping and personal services, to guidance on health and childcare, and more.
Meanwhile, matching outstanding amenities with prime location, “the Marina has trans formed the city, renewing its energy, upgrading the surrounding areas such as Limassol’s his toric centre, and attracting, for instance, a large number of tech and IT companies” to bring their business to the island’s innovative second city, continues Michalis. “Limassol has become the place to be in Cyprus and one of the best plac es to be in the Mediterranean.”
Beyond The Sea
Today, having established itself as a must-see destination, the Marina’s future shines bright. According to the man at the helm of the com pany whose prestigious projects also include The Oval, Trilogy Limassol Seafront and Limas sol Greens, the ongoing goal for the multi-mil lion-euro development is to continue to refine its offerings and grow its impact. This includes pioneering best practices and technologies in customer service, health and safety, while expanding its role in the fight against climate change and to preserve the environment.
Such aims are well-aligned with Michalis’ role as Chairman of the Cyprus Land and Building Developers Association, a position he has held now for two consecutive terms. In this capacity, he intends to keep lobbying for Cyprus’ real-es tate industry, accounting for about 20 percent of the island’s GDP, and driving the agenda to
wards actions that enable the construction and development sector to remain competitive, ef ficient and attractive to large-scale projects like Limassol Marina that are also catalysts to the transformation of cities and communities.
The longer-term goal, explains Michalis, is to maintain the Marina as the yachting hub of Cyprus and establish it as one of the main reference points for the boating industry and tourism sector in the Mediterranean region and beyond. “We want to fill it up, all year-round, while continuing to upgrade its products for vis itors, raise the customer experience, and make
it the place to be - a true destination - on the island,” he says.
For a fortunate few, there is still time to claim their own corner of this paradise, even though the window of opportunity is closing. The last of the Marina’s exclusive properties, with door steps onto azure waters and balconies over looking an endless horizon, are yet available for investors seeking to live on the sea, at the beating heart of Limassol’s renaissance.

BETTER THAN EVER
The largest event of its kind in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Limassol Boat Show is back, delivering unparallelled value to all stakeholders, as well as to the yachting industry and Cyprus as a whole
text by Emily Millett Special ReportRe-launched after a three-year break due to the disruption of the pan demic, the hugely popular Limassol Boat Show returned to Limassol Marina over October 14-16, 2022, bigger and better than ever. And according to Marina Manager Tom Lord, the hiatus turned out to have a silver lining, with all stakeholders showing increased enthusiasm to come together and celebrate the industry in all its glamour and glory. “The wanting is back and in full throttle, which was great to see, with so much going on over the three days, adding to the furore and festival feeling,” he says.
In fact, attendance hit record numbers this year, as some 30,000 visitors and over 100 exhibitors descended on the Marina to display and discover the latest in yachting, water sports, leisure fishing and diving. Local and in ternational boating enthusiasts, as well as leading industry players and top media all enjoyed a packed three-day programme of seminars, a yachting conference, exclusive product presentations, events and dazzling sponsor parties. "Returning on a bigger scale, more revitalised and with record at tendance, are all indicative of the significance of this exhibition, both for our island and for the wider region,” says Limassol Marina General Manager Nikiforos Pampakas. “The highest of standards have been set by the or ganisers and all those involved, with the result that this year's exhibition exceeded all expectations.”
Event Enhancements
Meanwhile, plenty of enhancements to the win ning formula for the 2022 edition accounted for the increased demand, including the opening of new exhibition and hospitality spaces, fresh events and venues, and a novel way of exhibiting the yachts. For exhibitors such as Yiannos Nico laides, managing director and owner of Nautimar Marine, such improvements were welcome. “The fact that larger boats could be displayed was a positive change, as the demand for large boats has increased,” he notes. The event also saw an exclusive selection of vessels exceeding €70 mil lion in value, including the regional debut of an exceptional yacht and motorboat series, as well as a unique collection of luxury vehicles and su percars seen for the first time in Cyprus, such as the Maserati Grecale and Maserati MC20.
Enlarging the event to include more exhibits, larg er yachts and further high-end products was one of the year’s keys aims, according to Dacor Ad vertising and Media CEO and Co-organiser of the show, Aristos Aristidou. “We really added value to the event, and made it more spectacular, which,
together with the huge efforts of the exhibitors themselves, resulted in the creation of something unique and special,” he says.
One Of A Kind
In fact, the exhibitors were a big part of what made the event such a resounding success, not least the leading international brands who attend ed with representatives from their central offices and shipyards.
According to Marina Manager Tom, their feed back has been uniformly fantastic. “For some, it was the first time they came over and they were all shocked by the quality of the show,” he shares. This is partly due to the Marina’s unique architec tural character – not the usual venue for an event of this type – but also to its holistic offerings that serve the whole market. “From jet skis to water sports, dinghy sailing and kids getting into the sport, to the world’s biggest superyacht charter companies and owners of superyachts, we cov er the whole spectrum and offer something for everyone,” Tom adds. In addition to being a great family-friendly day out for visitors, with an immer
sive public area featuring exciting happenings across the course of the three days, the Limassol Boat show is also one of the most targeted gath erings around. “It’s unique, because it is not usual to see such a concentrated collection of yachting professionals and exhibitors of such value in one place,” explains Aristos. “Along with the services and large numbers of people interested in yacht ing all together, this creates real value.”
The Right Audience
Then there are the benefits for the event’s exhib itors. After setting up a more effective way for yacht sellers to evaluate and network with pro spective buyers, several deals, transactions and agreements were closed during the event.
A case in point is that of Sunseekers Greece and Cyprus, whose large exhibitor booth, as well as three captivating yachts displayed in the water, resulted in an extremely successful showing. As the company’s General Manager for Greece, Fofi Olympidou, notes: “It was extremely beneficial for us to participate, to meet so many potential cus tomers, people and friends. We had considerable
interest in our boats, mostly from serious potential customers from all over the world who actually wanted to buy. In fact, one of our yachts is already ready to be sold following the show.”
Part of the reason the show is such a commer cial success for exhibitors is because it not only attracts the interest of a targeted, high-net-worth audience, but also meets their specific needs via a curated collection of premium luxury lifestyle products and services. According to Nautimar Marine chief Yiannos, this audience is already familiar with the level of luxury on display at the Limassol Boat Show. “They are coming for the yachts, but also the accompanying high-end products that complement this luxury lifestyle,” he explains. “They share this lifestyle and can recognise the quality on offer; it suits their level of luxury expectations.”
As such, the event generated leads, discussions and inquiries for Nautimar Marine, all from visitors in a position to make real purchases, with the ma jority of interest coming from existing superyacht owners or Limassol Marina residents.
Global Positioning
The Limassol Boat Show 2022 was also expo nentially beneficial for the continued growth and development of the sector as a whole, while, at the same time, strengthening Cyprus’ position as a premier yachting centre. "The Limassol Boat Show has undoubtedly succeeded in establishing Limassol as a pivotal yachting destination in the wider region,” observes Boat Show Co-organiser Aristos. “And this year’s event, in particular, caught the attention and recognition of a global audience, thanks to its remarkable commercial achieve ments.” Indeed, some of the event’s unique sell ing points, are also what place Cyprus in a class of its own as a yachting haven. Demonstrating the Limassol Boat Show’s role in promoting and highlighting the island’s competitive advantages, such as its strategic location between regions, of fering easy connections to all major hubs. “The Boat Show can easily bring together audiences and target markets from the surrounding region,” explains Tom. “Cyprus sits in the middle, so, it’s a great place for all markets to come together, meet centrally, do business and network.” And it is not just the yachting sector that benefits, but also the
tourism industry and country as a whole, observes Aristos, recalling a meeting with the Limassol Tourism Board president who, following the event, had received numerous congratulatory emails.
Bright Future Ahead
Unsurprisingly, planning for next year’s edition is already underway. “It takes a whole year to organise such a big event, so the moment one Show ends, the next one starts,” explains Ma rina Manager Tom. While the exact 2023 dates are yet to be announced, there is already keen interest amongst key exhibitors and prospective new sponsors, who all see the event’s vast po tential. First though, the Marina team is gathering feedback to help ensure next year’s Boat Show delivers on that potential, continuing to serve all exhibitors and sponsors in the best way possible. For his part, Aristos believes the Limassol Boat Show will only get bigger and better in coming years. “When we started in 2008, Cyprus didn’t even have a marina, so, to see the development of activities around the sea and yachting, and the expansion of services and interest, is a dream come true,” he adds.
“Returning on a bigger scale, revitalised and with record attendance, are indicative of the significance of this exhibition, both for our island and the wider region.”Dacor Advertising & Media CEO Aristos Aristidou (left), Shipping Deputy Minister Vassilios Demetriades (centre) and Limassol Marina General Manager Nikiforos Pampakas at the ribbon-cutting event for the opening of the Limassol Boat Show 2022. text by Emily Millett
MEETING MEGA EXPECTATIONS
While the Marina's award-winning boat services are key to its allure, for the crews calling it home, it’s the exceptional amenities, proximity to Limassol's pulse, and going above and beyond philosophy that make it a winner, explains Marco Rosi, captain of the megayacht Tatiana
To Captain Marco Rosi, the journey to becom ing captain in command of one of the world’s most luxurious megayachts, is both a “funny and romantic” one. As he recalls, growing up in the small seaport town of Tuscany’s Porto Santo Stefano, the career choices were limited to be coming a builder or going to sea. “My grandfather was a builder, and I understand it was a heavy job,” he laughs. “So, I decided to go for the sea.”
Steadfast from his earliest years, Captain Marco first learnt to sail a yacht at six, before beginning his professional career at the tender age of 13. His first command was at 19 and, since then, he’s “never looked back”. Today, as captain of megayacht Tatiana, he leads a 23-strong crew and manages one of the biggest vessels in Li massol Marina.
Built by Bilgin Yachts in 2021, the 80m luxury megayacht can accommodate 16 guests in its eight staterooms, together with 24 crew mem bers. Graceful and undeniably elegant in de sign, her unique features include a nine-metre indoor swimming pool, a beach club and topdeck Jacuzzi hot tub, as well as a cinema, ful ly-equipped gym and spa with a steam room.
Today, this impressively-proportioned vessel has made the Limassol Marina its permanent home port, justifiably drawn to the exceptional service standards, advantageous geographical position ing and the charm of its standout amenities and proximity to the city’s pulse.
At The Beating Heart
With early starts, long working days aboard Ta tiana, and often only an hour of free time in be tween, the Marina’s strategic urban location is key and makes a big difference in keeping his team happy, active and entertained, says Cap tain Marco.
“The crew really appreciate it,” he adds. “Many of them get up at five in the morning to walk along the Molos seafront promenade before work; they can pop to the centre for shopping during their break, go to the gym in the afternoon, and en joy the bars in the Marina and the city when they have time off.”
The fact that the integrated marina resort also delivers a holistic range of dining and entertain ment options through its commercial waterfront offering is another bonus. Captain Marco and his crew are all regulars at the gym, the shops and almost every café, restaurant and bar on site.
In addition to enjoying the dynamism and diversi ty of the Marina and the city, Tatiana’s crew also relish how easy it is to get out of town. Together with the help of the accommodating Marina team, Captain Marco often arranges excursions and crew team-building activities. These have includ ed trips to the famous waterfalls or hiking trails of the Troodos mountains, and to take in the stun ning nature of the area. Other activities, facilitated by the Marina, have featured renting quad bikes and go-carts, visits to tree-top obstacle courses,
participation in beach clean-ups and charity blood donations, and paintballing. Four of the crew – including Captain Marco himself – have bicycles that they regularly take around town and further afield, while the Marina has also arranged evening opportunities for water-skiing, Stand-UpPaddle boarding, waterboarding and fishing.
Prime Sailing And Sunshine
Services and facilities aside, another deciding in centive for Captain Marco is the advantageous geographical location of Cyprus itself. Not only is the island the final European port of call for boats sailing east, but it is also conveniently close to a wealth of prime yachting destinations.
“From Cyprus, with the boat we can go every where,” explains Captain Marco. “We are close to Greece - which is an excellent destination for yachting - and, as the last European marina, it is also very easy to cross into Dubai, Lebanon and the Middle East, which is the new era of yachting.”
But perhaps one of the biggest draw cards for Captain Marco and his crew is Cyprus' yearround favourable climate. With his winter jacket still packed away in his closet since arriving on the island, this sun-loving seaman appreciates that temperatures here rarely drop below 10-13 de grees, even in the winter. This, in turn, motivates his crew to get outdoors.
“Normally in winter we’re somewhere that it rains a lot, so the crew are closed inside watching TV,” he says. “Here, the weather means we are always able to walk around outside, stop for an al fresco coffee in the Marina, and generally be more active.”
Exceeding Expectations
Of course, when selecting a home port, a vessel the size of Tatiana has special requirements that need to be taken into consideration. And on that front, both the island and the Marina are exceed ing expectations.
“The Limassol Marina team is maturing and devel oping very fast,” shares Captain Marco, praising also the Marina’s continuous dedication to im proving and implementing innovative best practic es and technologies into its operations.
So far, Tatiana has made use of the dry dock in the shipyard, as well as a special wet house for storage, and crane and forklift services, and everything the megayacht could need, is on hand.
That applies beyond the impeccable facilities. For this discerning captain, it is the going over and above philosophy that really makes Limas sol Marina stand out. From providing 24/7 buggy services or arranging a barbecue to be delivered onboard, to organising Christmas parties and per sonal gifts for the crew, the Limassol Marina team “really listens to what we need”, he says. “This is something that is unique to Limassol Marina; they are always there to help, and they always try to give as much as possible. The office is amazing. Anything that we need, we ask, and they find a way to explain and solve the issue.”
Impeccable Security
Meanwhile, the most important of all Marina se lection prerequisites, according to Captain Marco, are safety and privacy. And Limassol Marina ca ters to both, with Tatiana located in a particularly secure area, only accessible via additional securi ty barriers to provide absolute privacy.
Captain Marco is also an advocate for the safe and stress-free lifestyle of Cyprus. So much so that he recently bought an apartment and perma nently relocated to Limassol.
Recalling the time that he uneventfully left his car unlocked overnight, he adds: “Here, you feel that you are safe. My stewardesses can walk alone, there are none of the problems we have experi enced in other marinas.”
And keeping his crew of 23 hardworking profes sionals safe and content is one of Captain Marco’s top priorities. “You know, what makes the boat special is the crew,” he says. “I want to motivate them and make sure they are always happy. And Limassol Marina makes that easy!”
“What makes the boat special, is the crew. I want to motivate them and make sure they are always happy.
And Limassol Marina makes that easy!”

LIMASSOL: WORKLIVE, & PLAY
Chat with crew, team members and residents about what it means to be based in the Marina, and a collage of joy and contentment quickly emerges. Here, five members of the community reveal how they follow their bliss, as they live, work and play in the beating heart of Limassol.
text by Alexia EvripidouFrom visitors to permanent residents, boat brokers to international crews, to teammates striving daily to make it an unparallelled des tination, Limassol Marina is a melting pot of remarkable people. It is also so much more. Looking deeper, here we find characters whose diverse lifestyles and hobbies fully embrace the call to adventure, while appreciating the treasures both on, and beyond, their doorstep. Taken all together, each of their experiences is as much about community, as it is about self-expression, making the Marina an inclusive home from home, in which to live, work and play.
Everything, In Easy Reach
Limassol Marina's vast, integrated offerings, combining luxurious residential and commercial developments with world-class yachting facilities, rely on equally impressive dedication for operation and maintenance. And it's up to Marina Manager Tom Lord and his team of 20 to provide the highest stand ard of service to the community that calls this home. "There's the entire spectrum of the yachting industry accommodated here," Tom points out, "and we support the entire customer base."
As one of the first to join the team to prepare the Marina for its launch over 8.5 years ago, Tom feels privileged to have been here from the beginning to welcome the inaugural boat. “I’ve greeted every single boat we’ve had through the Marina, which is now approaching 10,000 boats,” he says, do ing the numbers and referencing the 9,000 yacht arrivals per year, 300 of them superyachts. Beyond its yachting facilities, the Marina is also unique for several other reasons, not least of which is its strategic location in an expanding and innovative city centre – another feature appreciated by Tom. “It’s alive and kicking all year round,” he says of the €400-million devel opment, “so whether you are here in the winter or summer, visitors and residents can stroll out of the Marina and find everything they could possibly ask for.”
Super Cycling Man
When Tom’s not juggling work and family, he takes advantage of the play ground offered by Limassol and its vicinity by cultivating a variety of outdoor pursuits - the most routine of which, for him, is cycling. "When you’re up on the top in Troodos, on a clear day, heading round the trails, it’s breath-taking - so good for the soul,” he says. Closer to home at the Marina, there are also many cycling enthusiasts - both road cyclists and mountain bikers – with whom to join forces. “Many of the crew enjoy it. They bring their bikes on the boats with them, so they can just jump off the boat and onto their bikes and explore new surroundings.”
Exploration is certainly part of the thrill of the two-wheeling kind, and is easily accommodated by the natural landscapes nearby. According to Tom, there’s a fantastic old coastal road running all the way to Paphos from Li massol, which follows all the cliff-tops, passing by famous sites like Aphro dite’s Rock, as well as through beautiful coastal villages and bays. “You can
travel along, watching the waves crashing on the beach and relax, or hill-climb when you need to do some more vigorous exercise, and just link vil lage to village and choose a route,” explains Tom.
Team Playtime
But when it comes to bikes, it’s not just about the adventuring and impressive locales. Community spirit and hospitality are equally paramount to Tom and his team. “We’ve built it into our culture and strive to deliver fantastic customer service,” he says. The mantra being to deliver to all the Ma rina’s guests, residents and visitors the hospitality that Cypriots are famous for.
One case in point is the established group of around 10-20 people who like to meet every Sun day at 7am over the winter to get the endorphins flowing. Troodos Hotel offers a shuttle facility where the group can choose a trail, start at the top, cycle down over several hours, be picked up at the bottom, and then taken back up to the top to start the next trail. “There are hundreds of set trails with huge variety and everyone is welcome,” enthuses Tom. “Be it crew that are staying one week, a month, or nine, they can jump in and dis cover the best spots and get involved with events already set up.”
Everyone’s favourite track is the one where, start ing early in the morning, they take their bikes right to the peak of Mount Olympus in Troodos, and make their way all the way back to Limassol over a few hours, effectively linking five to six different trails together. “Spending the morning travelling down together is always a fun adventure,” says Tom. “It’s a great way to spend time together and connect, and for people to meet other like-mind ed people from the Marina.”
‘There’s a reason they call it fishing and not catching’ goes the saying. Marina Attendant Titos Ioannou wades through the mysteries and techniques of hook, line and sinker, as only a true fisherman can: serenely.Marina Manager Tom Lord considers Limassol and its vicinity a paradise for cycling enthusiasts.
When a pursuit means everything to you, enthusiasm comes natu rally. For Marina Attendant Titos Ioannou, fishing keeps him in the best of spirits, and is a source of unparallelled satisfaction. “I have caught many large fish in my life, the biggest weighing in at 35 kg, it was an amberjack near the old port,” he beams, recalling one particular exploit. A Li massol boy, born and bred, Titos sits at ease, moves the walkie talkie around his neck to a comfortable place, crosses his fingers and waits serenely for the questions. His silence is loud and strong, and there is little doubt that here is a man who knows patience - a quality primary to being a good fisherman, and one that also facilitates his job at the Ma rina, too.
Off To Work We Go
Titos is a relatively new team member at the Mari na, having worked here for nine months, and he’s kept on his toes. He lists off the tasks of a typical day: welcome new boats, tie them up, pull boats into place, fix mooring, ensure new boats have
electricity and water, check all boats in the Marina have not been damaged during bad weather, carry out boat maintenance, fill diving air tanks, and gen erally provide all kinds of other customer services to ensure crew, residents, villa and flat owners have everything they need.
“Not only are my daily chores different, but I also find the job very pleasurable, as it involves working with people and I never have time to get bored,” he says, contentedly. But while having a job you enjoy is a blessing, having a calling is something else entirely. “I’ve loved fishing since a child of six,” he says, with an assured smile. “My father would drop me off with a fishing rod in tow at the old mari na, where I would entertain myself, alone, catching fish.” And that passion continues today, unabated.
Hooked On A Feeling
Getting his fishing and boating licence at 17, Titos continued upgrading until he could finally work up to getting an inflatable boat. “These are by far the safest, it’s very rare to capsize in one,” he explains. Whenever he’s not working, he’s fishing. “I still haven’t quite understood what
it is that I love about it,” he muses. “All I know is that, from the moment I get into the sea, my mind tunes into fishing. Everything else just fades away.”
Titos fishes two to three times a week, every week, throughout the year, his favourite spots being near the old port, in Moni and Akrotiri, where he hunts for red porgy, seabream, dentex and wreckfish, as well as golden and dusky grouper, all native to the shores of Limassol. “There are times I started fishing at 5.30am and left 16 hours later, lost to time and the sea,” he admits. Why? He does it simply because he loves to do it.
Fish Versus Tech
That said, fishing may be synonymous with relax ation, but a surprising amount of calculation, fo cus, discipline and preparation is required to make the most of this past-time. Armed with a special fish-finding GPS system that uses high-frequency sonar to track the rocks at which the fish gather, there’s also water depth, temper ature and potential hazards to take into account, plus a downloaded weather application, varying rods with which to catch different varieties of fish and, when in season, fresh squid and cuttlefish for bait.
“Safety comes first. I analyse the weather, the speed and directions of the wind, the currents and height of the waves of the sea and tempera tures,” shares Titos. From there, he moves onto equipment: you need specific tools to catch spe cific fish. Every finny fighter requires a different rod, as each can hold up to a varying level of weight. “So, if I choose to fish dentex, then I will need a rod that can hold 150-300g,” he illus trates. “The bow, or give to pressure, is always a consideration, depending on the fish I wish to hunt.” If he chooses a rod that does not have enough flexibility to bend, then for sure the den tex will escape or the rod will snap. Ultimately, it boils down to man versus fish; human prepara tion versus the scaled creatures’ will. And for Ti tos, it’s safe to say he fishes to win.
Cyprus’ coastal capital may be famous for its watersports and beautiful beaches, but how about the island’s first-ever mermaid?
Marina Attendant Ioanna Yiangopoulou talks work, scuba-diving and the unearthly joys of donning fins.
Courteous and low-key in her de meanour, Limassol Marina Atten dant Ioanna Yiangopoulou, is a woman of hidden depths. Presently, she’s the first and only female on the Marina Attendants team, but, in her spare time, she can be found in the water, perfecting several forms of diving. One, in particular, being the new trend, and known in international waters as ‘Mermaiding’ or ‘Mermaid Diving’.
“Mermaiding is not a common thing,” laughs Ioanna. “I discovered it by mistake whilst watching a variety of diving videos on You Tube, but I guess I’ve always wanted to be a mermaid or some kind of fish as a child!”
Born in landlocked Nicosia, it was Ioanna’s desire to be close to the sea that ultimately led her to a life aquatic. And when she is not wearing her mermaid’s tail, her Marina re sponsibilities range anywhere from stretching the lines that connect boats to the deck under challenging weather conditions, to performing maintenance dives for yachts, and generally ensuring all customers’ needs are met. It comes as no surprise, then, that Ioanna twi
lights as a mermaid, during which time, equipped with her shiny blue tail and mo no-fin, she finds peace and fun underwater.
Marina Mermaid
Once referred to as water ballet, the first profes sional freelance mermaids appeared internationally around 2004. “For me, it’s a hobby with great exer cise - plus, I get to live out a fairy story,” giggles Ioan na. And she’s not joking about the exercise. In spite of its inherent gracefulness, the full-body workout of Mermaiding demands serious levels of fitness.
Within six months, she will be the first official in structor on the island offering Mermaiding training to aspiring merfolk, eager to learn the weightless cardio artistry themselves. As a course of training, Mermaiding has only been around for about five years and does not yet exist on the island, though there are certified schools in America, Germany and Australia, where actual Olympian Mermaiding competitions are held.
“Mermaiding is mainly free-diving, which combines specific moves from synchronised swimming,” Io anna explains. She clarifies this by saying that the discipline goes beyond simply using the fins. The fins generate the power, then the whole body is used to create the perfect hand-and-arm move ment to help turn left, right or around. “It’s about enjoying your tail and the feeling that this experi ence gives you,” Ioanna adds.
Underwater Wonders
Taking up scuba-diving three years ago, Ioanna’s teacher recognised her huge potential and she has now worked her way up to the dive master certification level. Ioanna also holds scuba, skipper and speedboat qualifications, is a member of the NAUI and AIDA organisations and practices free-diving. “I love the blue of the water and the silence and peace that come with it,” she confesses. “There’s a whole new environment and world to explore underwater. The rocks may stay the same, but the rest of the underwater nature is always completely different. It amazes me each and every time.”
When Ioanna’s mermaid tail is not in use, she enjoys scuba- and free-diving Limassol’s wrecks, including the Lady Thetis Vessel that attracts large numbers of damselfish, parrotfish and jacks, and the Costandis wreck, which was built in Russia in 1989. But her favourite place to roll in the deep is an underwater archaeological park at the ancient port of Amathus. “It is one of the best-preserved ancient harbour structures in the eastern Mediterranean,” Ioanna says.
A citrus fruit export company director, a semi-professional tennis player, a sailing enthusiast, and, above all, a proud father, Nicolas Mavropoulos reflects on two magnificent years spent living on his boat with his daughters.
Calling Limassol Marina their home was an unforgettable experience for Nicolas Mavropoulos and his two daughters, now aged nine and 11. With their three bikes parked outside their boat, and everything they needed within easy reach at their pier, they had the freedom to hop on and travel wherever they wanted, whenever they wanted. “We would pop out to Calma Café for lunch together by bike; our fa vourite meal was the triple ham and cheese with curly fries - the girls go crazy for it,” Nico las laughs, recalling. With everything so close to the Marina, sometimes they would go even further afield, biking down to the Four Sea sons hotel, swimming there, and then cycling back. “We discovered a new life that we’d been missing out on, just by living on the Ma rina,” says Nicolas.
No Place Like Home
“I am the owner, I am the captain, I am also the handyman of the boat - from the engines, to the air conditioning, to the woodwork… I fix everything because I love it. I even get the girls involved, so they can learn firsthand.” Until he refurbished an old
Cypriot house last year in Limassol, Nicolas’ 60foot, three double-cabin boat, which was docked on a pier in the Marina, was their family home. “It has everything you need, it’s like living in a small apartment on the sea.”
The girls loved the lifestyle: sleeping under the stars, spending endless nights on the front of the boat, enjoying lying on big cushions, eating dinner and moon-bathing together. In particular, watching the boats come and go and the lights of the Marina “was really special. It gave me quality time with my kids without the distractions of today’s usual life style trappings of phones, pads and TVs,” reflects Nicolas. The entire Marina became an extension of their home, in which Nicolas and his daughters felt safe to explore, discover, make friends and play.
As it happened, at the end of their pier, there were kids the same age as one of his daughters. “They would go cycling and fishing around the Marina to gether; it was lovely to watch my kids experiencing this.” It reminded him of his own youth growing up in Limassol, “back when things were freer and safer”, he says, adding, “thankfully, by living on the boat at the Marina, my girls got to experience that lifestyle.”
Nicolas Mavropoulos shares a lifelong passion for sailing and tennis with his two daughters.
Keep Calm, Play Tennis
Living in the Marina has not only enriched his daughters’ lives, it has also given them the opportunity to share Nicolas’ passion for tennis. His parents introduced him to tennis when he was nine years old at the Famagusta tennis club close to the Marina, and Nicolas played at the semi-professional level till about the age of 20, winning many trophies along the way. “I was part of a Cypriot team of five, we played very well and were always going abroad,” he recalls. In doubles, Nicolas and his partner actually made it to the semi-finals of the European Under 18 tournament in Winchester, England. “Before Marcos Baghdatis, it was the closest anyone had gotten to winning the European prize in tennis,” he says.
Today, when he returns to the courts with his kids, he still sees the people who used to play when they were his age, now in their late seventies. “And this is what tennis provides, it’s a timeless sport,” points out Nicolas. “When we play tennis together with my 11-year-old daughter, who started very young, it’s like playing with a professional player, having a professional match.” It also develops character, as everything relies on you: your strength, your commitment, your focus, he adds. “But at the same time, it’s civilised. It teaches you to control your emotions. If you lose your emotions, you lose the game. It feels like I’m teaching them life skills through tennis, about thinking calmly and objectively.”
His girls practise three times a week with a coach, and he plays weekly with them twice and also twice with friends. “Tennis and sailing used to be critical for my mental well-being; now tennis is critical for the relationship I have with my daughters,” he says. “It’s the thing that we will always share.”
‘Abad day at sea, is better than a good day on land’ reads the Lucida Black letter font that decorates Captain An thony Kiesari’s left forearm. But the motto also perfectly encapsulates his obsession with all things to do with the sea, in particular sailing and surfing. When the captain is not nav igating his boat through the elements, there’s a good bet he can be found riding the waves off Limassol on a surfboard, drawn to the sport’s ex hilarating demand for focus and agility, athleticism and speed.
Regarding his passion for the deep, “I went into the water and I came out a different person,” he quotes a friend as saying, to explain his re lationship with the majestic element. But his passions do not end there, as, in between safe ly transporting people over water, maintaining the vessel in his charge, or chasing the waves, the good captain can also be found carving white trails on his snowboard during the winter months, powering along the Troodos moun tain trails on his bike, or meandering through Limassol’s winding village roads. One thing is for certain, he likes to keep in motion, whether by land or sea.
Catching the sailing and surfing bug early, Captain Anthony Kiesari’s hunger to chase the horizon eventually led him to Limassol Marina. Today, whenever he’s not on duty, he’s making the most of riding sea crests and carving the slopes.
Crossing The Seas
This is not surprising, considering his beginnings. Of German and English heritage, Anthony was born and raised in Israel, right by the coast, and quickly developed his family’s passion for water sports - both sailing and surfing. So, it was inev itable that the calling of the blue vastness would also have a say in his future.
Following a stint in the navy, and with the respon sibility of a young family and a thirst to experience further shores, he set sail and eventually anchored in Limassol. The move proved pivotal for him. “At the time, there were huge shortages of berthing places all over the Mediterranean, especially in the Middle East,” he reveals. “I thought to myself, ‘This place is going to be a rising star, and I want to be there and be part of it’.” So, in 2012, Cap tain Anthony relocated his family to the island of sea, sand and surfing, fulfilling the goal he had set for himself.
Aye, Aye Captain
Here at the Marina, Anthony has enjoyed eight years as captain of a four-cabin power boat, with a fleet of two stewardesses for an expanding fam ily. “It’s a happy boat,” he says, contentedly, “every
time they come on board, it’s a happy boat.” In spite of his rank, hands-on Anthony prides himself on being a very involved seaman. “I like to be di rectly engaged with things, so I can deal with any thing that may arise, which is why I often clean and fix the boat myself,” he explains. “It’s the best way to know what’s going on with your boat.”
When peak season draws to an end, his hobbies come to life. Despite the cooler climates, the cap tain will take to the sea to surf, hit the Limassol dis trict backroads on his bicycle, or enjoy the island’s winter-white terrain with his snowboard. That said, even though surfing is a year-round passion, winter is when the waves are best. Rain, wind, snow or shine, at any spare moment, Anthony can be found somewhere in Limassol, riding the tides. Because, as he puts it, “surfing is everything”.
Home From Home
Living in a marina and on boats can mean a life in transit, but it can also mean having a ready-made international family, with shared values and hob bies at every port you drop anchor. “The friend ships and bonds here at the Marina are unique and fluid,” says Anthony. People come and go, in and out of each other’s lives, travelling overseas,
to other lands, and then congregate back here again, at Limassol Marina. Many of them share similar interests and enjoy these outdoor pursuits together. “And always with new and fresh ideas and stories to share,” he adds. “We all have the same jobs, so, when we do meet, we can share experiences, technical information and, of course, hobbies.” And there is no better place for this onthe-go lifestyle, than here in Limassol. “It’s such a very unique place; in the morning, you can en joy surfing, and by lunchtime, snowboard in the mountains.”
