Superyacht Destination Continuing to make history
When the first superyacht sailed into Limassol Marina back in 2013, few could believe that this would be the beginning of a new era for Cyprus. At 75m, M/Y Anastasia made history as the largest vessel to enter a marina on the island. The shores of this vibrant Mediterranean city have since been frequented by a string of distinguished guests. Four of the most prestigious superyachts in the world used the services and facilities at Limassol Marina within the space of a month. Second time visitors, 88.5m M/Y Nirvana, 72.6m M/Y Queen K and 99m M/Y Madame Gu, were followed by 119m M/Y A. And these are just a handful of more than 50 superyachts to have visited or signed long-term berthing agreements with Limassol Marina since its official opening. The new superyacht destination has stepped in to provide an ideal stop-over or winter berth, conveniently located at the crossroads of three continents.
Germania Nova Renaissance of a world-class racer
Fitting of a modern resort at one with the past, the stunning Germania Nova sailed into Limassol Marina this year, bringing tradition and history to the shores of the city. The 59.6m sparred length overall or 47.8m length on deck sailing yacht was designed using identical hull lines as the original 1908 schooner Germania, as well as the same sail and deck-plan. The skylights, companionways and deckhouse are true replicas of the original with a main engine and generators added to complement the modern navigational and communications equipment. Built in 1908 by the Germania Shipyard in Kiel, the original ship had no electric lighting and no main engine. The large schooner was a world-class racer and won Cowes Week in 1908, setting a new course record. When war broke out in 1914 she was seized as a prize of war and sold again several times under the name Half Moon – before succumbing to a storm and sinking off Key Biscayne in 1930, becoming Florida’s Seventh State Underwater Archaeological Preserve.
Mayfair Luxury Party Sunseeker London hosted the annual Luxury Party at its fantastic showroom in Mayfair just before the turn of the year, in the presence of around 200 guests from London and afar, including clients from partner brands like Backes & Strauss and Porsche. Launching four new models; the 131 Yacht, 95 Yacht, 116 Sport Yacht and 52 Manhattan, Sunseeker London was delighted to host so many guests in Mayfair and speak about new projects. Teens Unite and Caudwell Children were represented by both Karen Millen OBE Teens Unite and Trudi Beswick CEO of Caudwell Children. The New York Times Marina properties in demand
Mixed use marina developments provide more than just a safe harbour for visiting yachts. They provide a home, a unique and convenient lifestyle, combining waterfront living and yachting with an array of facilities in highly sought-after locations. The New York Times quoted an increase in demand for real estate in coastal locations in a recent article, with reference to Limassol Marina which offers apartments and villas as part of an integrated marina development in Cyprus. A rise in the number of wealthy buyers wanting to own property in coastal locations, as well as a global increase in the number of boat owners, is prompting international developers to create more waterfront enclaves. London-based property firm Knight Frank confirmed that: “Sailing is becoming more popular, and boat owners need places that offer facilities for maintenance. But they also want somewhere with increased lifestyle experiences, like an accessible location, good infrastructure, residential options and quality on-site leisure services, restaurants and retail.” Marina resorts also attract large numbers of people who don’t own boats but who want to live in a waterfront location. “There is a shortage of, and high demand for, space in which marina and residential are combined,” said Eamonn Feeney, Managing Director of MDL Consultancy, a marina planning specialist.

DRIVE IN SAIL OUT The ultimate in living on the sea, where you can drive home, then sail away from your own garden.
Living
Our vision was to provide an exclusive ‘living on the sea’ experience with multiple choices every day.
Cyprus has joined some of the most popular destinations in redefining the term ‘marina’. No longer simply a place to moor vessels of every size, shape and function marinas are now vibrant waterfront communities with stylish residential, retail and service facilities. Visit Limassol Marina and you will find a dream come true: an exclusive luxury development offering private berths attached to individually designed villas just a stone’s throw away from a vibrant city.
The Demand
There is no doubt that the world’s astute investors search for marina properties with flexibility in design, functionality and appeal in significant global locations and vibrant localities. Clients vary from shrewd boating enthusiasts with 12m cruisers to ‘A List’ 110m ‘superyacht’ owners. Few marinas can offer that scale of mooring linked to a residential property, which is why Limassol Marina is unique in the Mediterranean. Already home to a growing community of residents, the exciting new integrated marina development offers deluxe-specification property with private berths and a full service facility over and above the global level of expectancy. The design and planning, both internal and external, is of an exceptionally high standard across the
entire range of stunning accommodation. Properties sit effortlessly on the water, enhancing the natural beauty of the area. There is an aura surrounding the Marina which is unmistakable: captivating yet tranquil. Yiorgos Georghiou, Sales Director at Limassol Marina says: “The expectations of discerning clients are very specific, so we needed to combine the best of everything in our design and construction. Limassol is the only ‘superyacht’ facility in Cyprus able to accommodate 110m yachts - and the only residential development in the region offering private berths attached to each individual property. The prospect of owning a spectacular and convenient on-your-doorstep ‘villa berth’ (for yachts from 12m to 60m) is particularly attractive - especially to the serious water sport enthusiast. “The prospect of driving up to one door of your home and sailing away from another is something dreams are made of! We have also factored in a unique commercial aspect to the lifestyle elements and believe we have created the ultimate Mediterranean marina package. The exclusive villas, built on what feels like private islands, represent the pinnacle of waterside living, showcasing the finest in local craft and design.”
OnBoard | 19
The Offer
Situated just a five-minute stroll from Limassol’s cosmopolitan town centre, with all its facilities, makes this an enviable location. In the heart of the island’s second largest conurbation, the Marina offers a rich and vibrant choice of entertainment. However, discerning Marina owners and their guests have the option of enjoying the privacy of their own property, mingling with the eclectic Marina community and all its facilities or venturing further afield. Yiorgos explains: “Yes, the town is close but we wanted to provide our clients with everything they could wish for right outside their door: exclusive shops, the finest restaurants, a spa and fitness club, cafés and bars. Our vision was to provide an exclusive ‘living on the sea’ experience with multiple choices every day. Go sailing, relax at home or on the beach, stroll to the heart of the Marina for a coffee with friends, a nice lunch, a dose of culture or maybe some designer shopping. “Our vision was to ensure the commercial aspect could supply everything our residents would require to complement their lifestyle and needs. They also have access to a fibre optic network providing high speed broadband, wireless internet, telephone and IPTV. From home to berth, every potential convenience has been considered, including maintenance, fuel, access, securi-
ty and transportation. We have a bank, a boutique minimarket, pharmacy, car-rental service, a chandlery and a helipad. There is a 24-hour reception and concierge service and, like the two airports, the marina is also an official entry point to Cyprus making it particularly attractive to incoming mariners.”
The Market
The villas with private berths will be fully completed by the end of the year with a majority now delivered and 65% of the completed phase already sold. The residential offering encompasses luxury apartments through to magnificent villas on the sea with value added packages including Cypriot residence permits and citizenship. Yiorgos reflects: “We began construction in May of 2010 and the first properties were delivered to their owners in January 2013: in April that year we also welcomed our first yachts. Even in the early stages there was so much interest. I remember standing on the shoreline with a potential client, plans-in-hand, pointing to a small fishing boat about 150m off-shore. I said: ‘Your villa will be approximately in that position.’ An amusing and strange situation, but he bought off-plan and last year I opened the door to his villa and welcomed the family to their new home. Their boat is now just two steps away from the edge of their property
Living
and the marina is the only place in Cyprus able to offer that luxury. Perhaps in the past people did not believe that Cyprus would have such a facility but it’s here and we are very proud of our achievement and what it contributes to the island. The future is positive, mainly because we offer something completely different from the mainstream market and constantly receive a host of enquiries and visitors. Investors can really see and appreciate the potential of the opportunity in front of them. They also value the confidence and reliability of the companies behind the project.”
The Future
When the final phase of the superb residential development is completed, it will mark the end of an amazing journey of vision, foresight, planning and detail: a balanced mix of exclusive villas - some with private berths, others with beach front access - coupled with luxury apartments. The Marina also offers a rental and management service which is attracting considerable interest, especially from the high-end market. Now widely acknowledged as the most desirable property location on the island, it is an obvious investment prospect with universal appeal. To date, 18 different nationalities have purchased properties at Limassol Marina and are enjoying the unique lifestyle. This new maritime destination in the Mediterranean has, in a short time, become internationally acclaimed and recognised on both the nautical and real estate maps. While the venture has enhanced the Cyprus tourism market it has also increased confidence in the investment viability of the island. Property sales in Cyprus are steadily on the increase and
Elegant living, stylish design and the perfect location is a universally attractive proposition coupled with the almost perfect year-round climate.
Limassol Marina is a perfect example of why this is occurring. Elegant living, stylish design and the perfect location is a universally attractive proposition; coupled with the almost perfect yearround climate it is easy to understand the appeal. A stroll around the delightful Marina endorses this and shows how easily the residents and visitors have taken to the ‘living on the sea’ lifestyle. Cyprus has always been known as the Mediterranean island at the crossroads of three continents. Now it is also being celebrated as a destination of preference. Investing in Limassol Marina is a life-changing decision where home is defined by a drive in, sail out experience. For a private viewing contact +357 25 020 020
Graff: The KinG of Diamonds
In the glamorous world of exclusive designer jewellery, the name ‘Graff’ is synonymous with rare gems as well as the finest craftsmanship. Limassol Marina invites you to explore the world of Graff in a boutique dedicated to this world-famous house of diamonds.
G
raff is a household name among kings, queens and heads of state around the world. Laurence Graff’s title, King of Diamonds, says it all. It reflects decades of not only being surrounded by the rarest and finest of such gems, but also his successful crafting, setting, buying and selling of world-famous diamond pieces of art. However, knowing Graff as a purveyor of legendary jewels of unparalleled perfection and breathtaking scale is only part of his dazzling story – a story of passion, ambition, and uncompromising commitment to the highest quality standards.
in Hatton Garden, London’s famous jewellery quarter and centre of the UK diamond trade. In 1960, when he was only 22 years old, he founded Graff and soon had two jewellery shops, including his own in Hatton Garden. With nerves of steel
Graff’s passion for gems combined with his exceptional business acumen mapped out his extraordinary journey from London’s East End to the wider global arena where celebrities and dignitaries meet.
Graff’s name is synonymous with unique pieces of jewellery and the most famous diamonds in the world
Gifted & Passionate
Laurence Graff, the diamantaire, was not born into the business – but his affinity to it was obvious from a young age, when he left school at 15 to become an apprentice. Before long he was repairing jewellery and creating small pieces of his own, which he sold independently to jewellers all over England. By all accounts, he is considered a self-taught gemmologist; but he learned from the best – the jewellers
and an uncanny sixth sense about diamonds, it was clear that Graff had a rare gift. Combined with confidence and perseverance, it drove him forward at an unstoppable rate. ‘The sky’s the limit’ was not only his motto, it was a mindset that ultimately made his name synonymous with unique pieces of jewellery and the most famous diamonds in the world.
An Eye For Beauty
Graff’s name is linked with the iconic ‘Hair and Jewel’ coiffure, created and captured in 1970 in a black and white image that has made fashion, diamond and advertising history. In the photo, a model flaunts an elaborate hairstyle inspired by the hair fashion of the 18th century Court of Versailles, with different ultra-feminine diamond

creations worth one million dollars adorning the hair loops. To celebrate 60 years in business, Graff decided to outdo himself with a 2013 followup to ‘Hair and Jewel’, this time adorned with half a billion dollars worth of gems. Today Graff Diamonds is involved in every stage of the jewellery industry, from sourcing rough gems to cutting, polishing and setting them to deliver unique pieces with the Graff signature. Over 50 Graff stores can be found around the world, with one such diamond lovers’ paradise waiting to be explored at Limassol Marina.
Documenting The Magic
To provide insight into Graff’s career and capture the story behind world-famous jewels, a new book entitled simply ‘GRAFF’ was published and released by Rizzoli. With 272 pages and 193 colour black & white photos, this is a unique and mesmerising tome that records history in a most enchanting format. It includes an interview with Laurence Graff himself, and a selection of images from his personal archives, which show his
family’s beginnings in London. It also presents the best of the House of Graff, as well as intriguing gems that have defined the industry. Among them are stunning photographs that offer a close encounter with extraordinary stones such as the 603-carat Lesotho Promise – to which Graff dedicated many months before finally transforming it into a necklace of 26 flawless diamonds. Also illustrated is the 118.08-carat Delaire Sunrise, the largest square Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond in the world, and the 102.79-carat Graff Constellation, the largest D Flawless round diamond in the world.
jewellery design and extraordinary timepieces. The book can be purchased for the price of €85 at Limassol Marina’s exclusive store, located in the luxury shopping area just a few steps away from the central square. Adviser to the ‘A-List’ Lawyer John Leonida counsels many of the world’s leading superyacht builders, owners and designers. Cypriot by birth, he is also an aficionado of the maritime lifestyle. Here, he lets us glimpse a light-hearted but sincere slice of his life – and his positive assessment of Limassol Marina.
It was that time of the year again! A pristine line-up of superyachts, a fleet of gleaming Rolls-Royces, a never-ending flow of champagne, red carpets, dock-side parties and charming industry professionals. It was none other than Boat International’s spectacular Rendezvous in Monaco. For the second consecutive year, Limassol Marina were there as a sponsor alongside our partner Camper & Nicholsons Marinas. The trip promised to be as fun-packed as ever, particularly for me. Sipping my gold-flake champagne on the terrace of the Hotel de Paris after the ShowBoats Design Awards, an acquaintance introduced me to what I can only describe as the quirkiest version of a dapper man I have come across in my life. Smooth, jovial and witty, I was instantly taken by his charisma and genuinely startled by his tone and humour. It was so familiar. I knew him, surely I did. It felt as if I had known him for years. “Where are you from?” I asked. “London, but originally Cyprus,” he said with a childlike grin peering from under his well-groomed moustache. The standard Cypriot joke, that half way into a conversation you usually discover someone is your relative, or as good as, began to ring true very quickly. Not only did John have roots in Limassol, his aunty Christine Sergides had been my favourite teacher at school and his cousins were old friends and classmates. He was one of us! And he had mastered a segment of the industry most in Cyprus were only just beginning to grasp. John Leonida was our home town boy turned superyacht lawyer. I just had to find out more.
Drawn To The Sea
It was almost inevitable that John would find his way to the sea! His family history had always been connected to boats. Born in South London to Cypriot parents, he experienced Deptford and Surrey Docks before their gentrification when, in the 1960s, they were hardworking shipping and
cargo centres. Before London’s docks were closed, his playground was the maritime heartland of London: Greenwich. Discovering new stories of exploration in the halls of the National Maritime Museum or standing on the foredeck of the nineteenth century tea clipper Cutty Sark, John was always fascinated by boats. He also remembers the boating lake in Greenwich Park, where he and his father would launch a battery-powered toy yacht. Who would have guessed that some 30 years later the real thing would be an integral part of John’s life? Although his family was originally from Kalopanayotis in the Troodos mountains, several of John’s uncles and his godfather settled in Limassol, a place he always considered his coastal home. Many summers were spent there in the 1970s and 1980s, with John watching the cargo ships plying Limassol Harbour. An economist by training, he served with Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, working on trade development. His move to the legal profession came late, qualifying in 1996. He eventually ‘washed ashore’ at what was then a small specialist marine and insurance firm in the City of London, Clyde & Co. The company went on to develop as a major force, with 45 offices globally and almost 400 partners - of which John became partner number 60 in 2003. He advised on his first superyacht transaction in 1998 - the US$2m sale and purchase of a Sunseeker Predator 80 – and today counsels many of the superyacht world’s leading yacht builders, owners and designers. John is in considerable demand at international symposia and regularly writes for the leading superyacht publications. As much known for his legal skills as his articles and eccentric Twitter feed, signature facial hair and bespoke suits, he can be seen zipping around Monaco on his Brompton folding bike or zooming around London on his “jet ski on wheels”, a much beloved CanAm Spyder.

The Changing World Of Superyachts
John Leonida at Sunseeker’s Mayfair Luxury Party in London with Andreas Christodoulides, CEO of Limassol Marina, and Michalis Hadjipanayiotou, CEO of Cybarco Development.
“ The attention to detail and the warm Mediterranean breeze almost compel you to stay there”
When John first became involved with superyachts, it could barely be called an industry. By today’s standards, the yachts were small and relatively cheap. It was a cottage industry populated by enthusiastic amateurs with just a few long term professionals. A 40m yacht was considered huge, a 50m yacht gigantic. At the turn of the 21st century, spending more than US$20m on a maritime plaything was considered outlandishly extravagant. During the last ten years, the global fleet of superyachts over 45m has grown from around 546 to almost 1,000. Annual deliveries of all superyachts have averaged 140 yachts per year over the last five or six years. And the professionals have driven out most of the amateurs. It is accepted wisdom that the global superyacht fleet sits at around 5,000 or 6,000: the pride of around 3000 owners. According to the 2016 Annual Report from Superyacht Intelligence, there are some 40,000 individuals involved in the superyacht industry as well as 6,500 in the supply chain. John’s own practice, which is overwhelmingly shipbuilder based, sees a bright future: “From the contracts that have been signed in the last year or so it’s evident that serious yacht building is up and running. According to a number of sources, for the first time since the crash of 2008, the number of new orders has exceeded the number of new deliveries. A situation we haven’t seen since 2006.”
Cyprus On The Yachting Map
In recent years there has been a small, considered, shift in the cruising destinations of superyacht owners and superyacht charterers. In John’s early years, chartering in Europe was almost exclusively along the Côte d’Azur, cruising through Italian waters, visiting Sardinia and the Balearics. Now, more owners and charterers choose to cruise east of the Côte d’Azur: with the Adriatic, the Aegean and the Mediterranean providing less obvious but sometimes surprising cruising waters. Montenegro, Mykonos and Santorini have proven popular places to stay, but - at the eastern rim of the Mediterranean - John believes Limassol is an attractive and alluring destination. Together with his wife, John passed through Limassol when holidaying in Cyprus a couple of years ago. They were captivated by the ‘village within the town’ that was the Limassol Marina: a venue which, in a very short space of time, had developed as a lively hub of social activity for the city’s residents as well as the visiting “yachties”. It was, says John, as if Limassol Marina had always been there. “The sympathetic Italian influenced architecture reminiscent of the Costa Smeralda, the attention to detail and the warm Mediterranean breeze almost compel you to stay there; but if you choose to sail away for a day, the short day-trips to Akamas Peninsula or Pissouri Bay will make this part of the Mediterranean a favourite.” Cheekily John adds: “If you choose to moor-up and hire a car and drive inland, try my home village of Kalopanayotis up in the Troodos mountains. Where, if you are lucky, you might find me lunching at Casale Panayiotis. And I might invite you to a small cup of the coffee favoured in this part of the Mediterranean - accompanied by a sweet that will have your doctor condemning you for an unhealthy diet.” The success of any marina depends on its ability to provide shore-side facilities for visiting yachts. Not just repairs and maintenance, but hospitality and a relaxed environment. Limassol can deliver all that in bucket-loads. And as the Marina becomes more and more integrated into the city’s daily economic and cultural life it is sure to become a haven for the superyacht lifestyle to which Cyprus is so well suited!

RENEWING OUR PROMISE A unique concept of casual sophistication launches the Four Seasons into a new era of exclusive hospitality that reaffirms the hotel’s standing as ‘the Finest on the Island’.
G
uests who visit the Four Seasons every year, or even more often, look forward to the annual changes that always mean pleasant surprises. Some are subtle, others you can’t miss. The renovations of winter 2015/16 were of a different calibre altogether: they turned a page and started a new chapter in the Four Seasons story. For the second time in two decades, the hotel reinvented itself and welcomed spring 2016 with a refined look, feel and functionality.
Subtle Exclusivity
The fact that it only took four-and-a-half months for the new Four Seasons to be unveiled was an achievement in itself. Structural changes, finishing material and décor reveal wall-to-wall innovation in guest rooms and public areas, both indoors and outdoors. The new concept is the result of targeted, in-depth research into the trends and details of elite living. Specialists in high-end interior décor, contemporary artists and smart-home technology provided ideas and inspiration. Throughout the

Life at the Helm S
With long stretches out at sea, far away from the familial comforts of dry land, the perks and pitfalls of life as a superyacht Captain are not all high adrenaline adventure and glamour. A rare peek on board one of these luxurious beauties with her captain reveals the secrets of life at sea.
ailing off to exotic lands at a moment’s notice, embarking on endless adventures out at sea and navigating the latest luxurious superyacht, are most people’s daydream staples; the life of a captain creates intrigue wherever these seafaring beauties go. Promises of freedom, splendour and incessant yacht parties with beautiful people and champagne on tap however, may prove to be a far cry from what this man of mystery’s daily reality entails. In search of answers, we were given access onboard a breathtaking 85m yacht docked at the lavish Limassol Marina, to discover what life at the helm of these nautical palaces is really all about.
shorts and t-shirt with a cool, calm demeanour greets us. He is not the multimillion euro superyacht captain we had envisaged. From deck to deck, working our way to the bridge, we try to process the complexity and beauty of the vessel. She impresses instantly and effortlessly, in fact everything about her seems effortless; a perfect distraction from the actual hard work that goes on behind the scenes. In a leisurely manner, he jumps and sits on the panel next to the five huge monitors lined in front of the slanted window in the bridge. Not a steering wheel insight, just a fancy joystick.
Prepared to meet a white-bearded British sea captain in a starched uniform we ring a ‘doorbell’ at the base of the Burmese teak wood and chrome steps. The custom gangway and entry system is the only obstacle separating us from one of the most fantasised about grown-up toys around today, the super-yacht; desired by all and owned by so very few.
With her gross tonnage at just under 3,000, she’s 21m high with five decks and runs with a crew of 28; technically paid to work seven days a week, 365 days a year. The yacht must remain in standby mode, ready to cruise at a moment’s notice. Little seems to faze the Captain, not the breathtaking opulence of the vessel he lives on, or the jet-setting lifestyle. Having worked on super-yachts since 1989, he takes it all with a pinch of sea salt.
A friendly voice gives us permission to enter and, to our surprise, an affable barefooted man in
“Life as a superyacht captain is a large responsibility. In the olden days there was a saying
Aye Aye Captain
‘Master under God, and it’s not far off’,” laughs the captain. Everything is ultimately his responsibility: be it a crew member tripping and breaking an ankle, a main engine failing or a helicopter incident.
A Captain’s Log
Much to people’s surprise, the decision-maker, caretaker, and manager of all things operational, financial and logistical is the captain and not the owner. He’s responsible for both the superyacht and all people on board. Ironically, much of his time is all spent in an office tied to his desk and not staring at the sea; there’s much logistical red tape that must be adhered to. “We’re constantly running varying safety drills. Every month we need to match the nautical safety standards and every two years we carry out the big maintenance jobs.” A typical day for a captain is less James Bond and more hotel manager, requiring much forward planning: spending hours dealing with emails, systems maintenance, meeting with his heads of departments, liaising with the chief engineer, supporting his crew’s emotional wellbeing and responding to reports on what needs doing and when, “it’s all about juggling logistics depending

on what the owner’s plans are.” The rest of the time, they travel around the world chasing the seasons. One week they’re in the Mediterranean waiting for further instructions, the next they’re sailing to the Pacific to prepare for the owner’s arrival. The owner chooses where to go and everything after is up to the captain. “It’s a surreal reality, one moment you’re trolling through emails the next you’re organising a day out to swim with whale sharks in Australia. I have to stop everything, take the helicopter and go scouting for idyllic beaches, diving venues and places to anchor. Everything needs to be faultless for when the boss arrives. The boss is also mindful of the budget, but not to the extent it would compromise his experience onboard. He gives me more than enough rope to hang myself!”
It’s a huge and demanding job which the Captain evidently adores, “I love being at sea. It’s an exciting life, travelling the world and seeing new sights. Another perk of the job is the excellent pay without expenses; if you get it right and you work hard you may end up being able to balance the job and to find time with your loved ones.”
Then there’s the actual job of being a captain: navigation, passage planning and the general getting the boat from A to B, as well as dealing with the whopping costs; he spends two months drafting an annual watertight budget, sometimes balancing a six million+ account a year.
Beneath The Surface
“However, the real role of the captain is to generate the vibe, performance levels and end results. Setting the tone for how the yacht operates. It’s all about making the unit work well together; having the right personalities who can live together in a small space is the most important thing. Anyone can do the jobs but the right chemistry is vital for a well-functioning yacht,” explains the Captain.
It appears that trying to keep that sense of fun and adventure now that super-yachting has become so regulated is a common grind amongst superyacht captains. For most, home is the sea and family their crew. Their relationships on land are taxing due to the amount of time they spend on water, and the vast blue expanse is their mistress. ‘Real life’ on land, is a challenging temporary necessity. With all that in mind we set out to explore this floating ten-star resort’s countless rooms, nooks and crannies with newly informed eyes. The crew is polishing cutlery, cooking gourmet foods and seeing to last minute alterations as we pass through water tight doors, emergency escape rooms, cinemas, helipads and a submarine, the theme music to Mission Impossible playing on a continuous loop in our heads. The music switches to full volume on entering the upstairs, downstairs engine rooms; it’s immaculate, all white, chrome, impeccably kept and exactly akin to the films: each object somehow intrinsically linked to another and together beating as the heart of this stunning metal sea creature. Scratch the multimillion euro surface and the genius engineering and mechanical complexities that keep this beauty afloat shine. The calm exterior of the Captain begins to make sense, it’s his baby and everything needs to be perfect, a relaxed temperament is required to cope with all the things that can constantly go awry. “At full speed, 20 knots, we burn 50 tons of diesel a day and at cruising speed, 15 knots, we burn 20 tons. There are two main engines with 4,500 horse power each,” explains the Captain. His pride in his vessel is evident as he looks out at the rippling ocean ready to sail full speed into blue vastness; this, one feels, is the true meaning of beauty and opulence.

Dare to be Different
Fine Quality, Superlative Luxury, Dutch Craftsmanship. The renowned Van der Valk shipyard in Holland specialises in building personalised “pocket-superyachts” in steel or aluminium, up to 40+ metres.
F
or almost half a century, Van der Valk Continental Yachts has been successfully building steel and aluminum motor yachts in Waalwijk, Holland. At the helm of this familyrun enterprise with a pedigree which spans generations is the founder and Managing Director, Wim van der Valk. A passionate yachtsman and water sports enthusiast, he founded the company that bears his name in 1968. At the time, the first cabin and aft-cabin design cruisers that were built measured 7 to 10 metres and proved to be extremely successful. Subsequent triumphs were achieved with the launch of pinnacle yachts such as the ValkCruiser, Comfort, Royal and Falcon, which underlined the Van der Valk characteristics: quality and reliability. Continued development and innovation elevated this shipyard to its rank among the most prominent names in the Dutch yacht-building industry – an industry acknowledged worldwide for its contribution to high-end yacht construction.
In the 80’s the shipyard introduced the Vitesse series. Built in steel and/or aluminum, these again became the reference in the exclusive segment of the market, with international recognition and success thanks to their progressive design, great sailing characteristics and high resale value. Towards the end of the 90’s, the elegant Continental became a reality. The Continental ONE, an instant success, evolved into the company’s gorgeous signature product, with over 100 proud owners to date. The Continental TWO and Continental THREE followed, both offering a choice of direct shaft, V-drives or IPS. The more recently introduced Continental FOUR has already take the world by storm with the 2015 launch of a 37-metre version of this expedition-type trawler series. It officially debuted at the 2015 Cannes Yachting Festival held every September. Currently taking shape is a 24-metre version with lavish interiors and amazing specifications. The Continental FIVE is a new concept for globetrotting Expedition Yachts. The design features a distinctly masculine character making an impressive appearance.
Innovative technologies is the compass of Van der Valk progress. When the revolutionary Volvo IPS was launched, Van der Valk was one of the first non-production yards to install this technology on their Continental yachts – a move that was both successful and greatly appreciated by the yachting public. To accommodate personal preferences, Van der Valk offers buyers a choice of propulsion type and bespoke interiors and layouts. The number of innovations is countless, and distinguish every new launch. Nothing is pre-determined; customisation is king. No two yachts are identical, with options as vast as the imagination. Working with steel and/or aluminium allows this flexibility, in order to create individualised yachts using proven techniques and technologies on well-tested platforms. With the buyer’s specification in hand, the Van der Valk team develops the desired yacht – whether on a proven platform or as a unique creation. Renowned designers and naval architects ensure optimised space utilisation and hydrodynamics for the ultimate end-result.

Van der Valk people are at the core of company’s success. They thrive on innovation, take pride in what they do, and are rewarded with customer enthusiasm. With 2nd and 3rd generation craftsmen on board, some team members have been with the company for decades. It is no wonder that many clients return to this shipyard again and again to create the next personalised yacht of their dreams
A Jewel In The Making
Van der Valk Continental Yachts’ new 27-metre Continental Two motor yacht is taking shape. The naval architecture brief is met by Jaron Ginton, while Guido de Groot is responsible for both the exterior and interior design. If there is one destination worth exploring this summer, it’s The Deck at The Yacht Club that features renowned Cypriot labels. We met with three pioneers of local wineries that have come together to celebrate yet another successful year.
T
here is no easier way to discover the wine tradition of Cyprus than a reservation at The Yacht Club’s Deck. At the heart of Limassol Marina situated right on the water, it’s the ultimate setting for a special wine-tasting experience. Its list showcases over 200 labels to satisfy every preference for acidity, sweetness and body. Particularly for the discerning wine connoisseur, the private wine collection will entice you with its rare bottles belonging to limited vintage editions or purchased at auction. Owner Emilio Panayis is markedly proud of local wine and singled out three Cypriot brands bearing the calibre of their international counterparts. Their wines are unique versions of established grape varieties as well as an introduction to the island’s indigenous types.
Grape Expectations
A natural advantage for Cyprus winemakers is the wonderful warm climate that compliments countless international varieties. Sophocles Vlassides has mastered six different types by benefitting from the calcareous soil of Koilani village to sustain healthy vines. “Our priority lies in their careful culti-
vation in order to guarantee more harmonious results during the production process,” explains Sophocles. Having studied in California – home to equally excellent wines – Vlassides combines the expertise of a qualified oenologist with the technical experience of a winemaker since 1998. Originally a makeshift project within the old grocery store of his grandfather, the new winery situated at the ‘Koloni’ vineyard since 2012 produces 120,000 bottles annually. One variety that is now part and parcel with Cyprus wine-making is the Shiraz, and the Vlassides edition is among the best islandwide. It has received the Gold Medal repeatedly at the Wine Competitions of Thessaloniki and Cyprus since 2004. Sporting a deep red tint, with a rich texture and robust taste, it’s Sophocles’ personal favourite as an accompaniment to meat dishes or as a standalone beside a cheese platter. The local variety Xynisteri can also be found on Sophocles’ 16 hectares of land, as part of his ongoing plans to represent more indigenous grapes. For now, alongside the Shiraz, The Deck also serves the
winery’s Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon that are also critically acclaimed.
Living Legacy
Sophocles is also the oenologist of the Argyrides winery in nearby Vasa, run by Rebecca Argyrides and her family. The boutique winery boasts stateof-the-art technology however its preserved building retains its traditional qualities. ‘Within our beautiful estate, we embrace the 200-year history of our family plus our visitors engage in the legacy of the village,’ says Rebecca. The production – limited to 20,000 bottles - is more of emotional than commercial importance but it displays the utmost commitment to excellence. ‘To ensure consistency in our standard, our production is solely from our own grapes,’ says Rebecca. ‘Our experts from Cyprus and abroad guide us through the complexities of the viticulture and oenology process.’ Their high-quality standard explains why their bottles are only available in boutique cavas in Cyprus whilst acquiring a growing international presence.

Yacht Club is one exclusive supplier of Argyrides classics such as Chardonnay and Merlot Cabernet, and the more recent Viognier. Viognier is a French variety first produced by Argyrides in 2013 as the natural conditions at Vasa contribute to the wine’s full body and fruity notes of peach and jasmine. Still, it is a temperamental wine that can be a challenge to perfect and Argyrides has been congratulated in the industry for mastering an aromatic bouquet and creamy texture every year. Rebecca trusts their Viognier for pairing with lighter dishes of sushi, salads and grilled seafood.
Reaping Rewards
Like Argyrides, the work of Costas Tsiakkas is a family affair with a winery that continues the original endeavours of his grandfather. Located outside Pelendri, the Tsiakkas vineyard has helped draw international attention to Cyprus as a promising newcomer in the world of wine. Tsiakkas and his 11-person team have revolutionised the business since its humble beginnings in 1988 with their wines now representing Cyprus in seven countries. Costas embarked on his winemaking journey with
the help of foreign varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc but has turned decisively towards his roots in recent years. With the help of an oenologist and viticulturist, he has sought to reintroduce forgotten varieties of older red grapes such as Yiannoudi and Vamvakada. “Given the increased curiosity for Cypriot wines, we owe it to the island to give greater attention to local varieties in our vineyard from now on,” says Costas. Available at The Deck are the oak-aged versions of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc but the Xynisteri is an opportunity to savour a local white variety in its best possible form. After all, it won the Regional Trophy at the 2015 Decanter World Wine Awards, out of 114 competitors in its category. “It was a white grape previously underestimated but its fermentation and cultivation are very particular and it surprises you every year with the bouquet of flavours it can offer,” says Costas. The Deck at The Yacht Club awaits you to discover these Cypriot wines that can make any
gathering as special as this meeting of three important cultural ambassadors. The Yacht Club is situated at Limassol Marina, operating year-round, 7 days a week from 10-2am. An elevator is available for the convenience of disabled guests.

Your taste buds can embark on a journey through the world’s most striking flavours and aromas thanks to the imagination of this culinary globetrotter.
Christoforos Peskias, The Yacht Club
Some of the most esteemed restaurants across Greece carry his autograph, from Balthazar in Athens to Jackie-O in Mykonos. Winner of ‘Chef of the Year’ awards from several publishing houses, judge on the reality show ‘Top Chef’ and now presenter on an AlphaTV cooking show, he is synonymous with Greece’s budding food movement. The Yacht Club is Christoforos’ chosen spot for his first creative stamp in his country of origin. The secret to his culinary excellence lies in its duality, bridging traditional ingredients with modern techniques. The nostalgia for his homeland resonates in the citrus fruit, coriander and fresh fish prevalent in his cooking. Studying in the USA and travelling to countless other destinations spurred his personal twist on his culinary heritage. Similarly, Christoforos wished to create a menu that encapsulated the duality of the Marina, a location that connects one to Cypriot and international cultures simultaneously. Thus, his ‘Island Cuisine’ theme is a celebration of Mediterranean summer food fused with flavours
from his subsequent discoveries further afield. The ‘Raw Bar’ offers cooler starters of caviar, tiraditto, carpaccio and oysters for summer dining. For mains, authentic ingredients within and around Cyprus come into conversation with influences from Latin America, Japan and Thailand. Peruvian ceviche – one of Christoforos’ favourites – is presented in a Greek format with lemon and mint replacing the usual traits of chilli and lime. Pork tenderloin in its Commandaria sauce has the subtle tang of ginger for an Oriental kick. The innovation behind such recipes is so far-reaching that Christoforos’ work represents an entire cuisine of its own. With views of endless shades of blue beyond the glass panels, and the Yacht Club’s elegant interior, you are almost transported to the top deck of a luxury cruiser. Once your gastronomic travels are complete, explore the downstairs lounge with drinks, light bites and entertainment. The Yacht Club connects the magic of possibility out at sea with the warmth of reaching Cyprus, and finally Christoforos’ food movement can evolve somewhere it truly belongs.
Dining
Long associated with high-end Japanese fare, he is now taking his creativity up a notch with his spectrum of fusion dishes.
Gil Panayiotou, The Crystal
‘Food Art by Gil’ is a new dining experience set to enrich the Marina’s food scene even further. It represents the next chapter in the food revolution that Gil instigated in 2001 as Cyprus’ first television chef. He provided a fresh and approachable take on gastronomy which inspired his viewers and generated a ‘foodie’ movement on the island. Available at lunch and in the evening, the menu intends to be ever-changing with daily additions to the chef’s repertoire, but the influence of Oriental flavours is a firm constant. Indeed, Gil’s award-winning career is a strictly Asian affair to the core. With a commitment to ‘good, honest food’ being his overriding mantra, his introduction to Japanese cuisine is what directed him to his true passion. His early years in the UK provided the foundation of his knowledge but it was his partnership in Nippon restaurant that defined his mission: to acquaint the Cypriot market with the cooking practices of the Far East. He initiated the island’s love for sushi and continues to raise the benchmark with ever-changing recipes. Nippon has elevated Larnaca on the
restaurant front since 2003 and together with its sister restaurant in Limassol, it presents unique dishes of Japanese flair. ‘Food Art by Gil’ is a continuation of this Asian-inspired legacy. With experience in leading a kitchen team and hosting a restaurant, Gil successfully unites exquisite food with the ideal setting to suit every occasion. With panoramic, uninterrupted views, The Crystal Lounge Bar & Restaurant is a design centrepiece floating on the water. The lavish seafood bar with impressive fish display compliments an aperitivo session and the lounge area beside the glass panels combines casual dining with effortless elegance. Above all, Gil is dedicated to satisfying all taste buds by adapting his dishes to each palate. Different sauces can be whipped up on demand and bouquets of flavours are prepared for each individual. His new endeavour promises to serve up a more personal gourmet selection, where the flavours are modified for your added enjoyment. Like any successful artist able to touch their audience, Gil’s collection of food creations offers an experience at its most interactive.

Ready to welcome its first summer in operation, this dining destination is a fresh opportunity for discovering Skevos’ excellence as a leading chef.
Skevos Kapsos, ‘Εψιλον Resto | Bar
As Executive Chef of the Carob Mill restaurants, Skevos has manifested an exciting new project that reflects the group’s gastronomic expertise in its almost 20 year history. He has been the driving force behind the inception of the restaurant’s food and design philosophy and guided his team since October 2015. A six-month culinary trial allowed Skevos to fine-tune his vision and create a delectable assortment of signature dishes for the summer. Unique in taste, texture and presentation, all suggestions fuse distinctive elements of Mediterranean and Asian cooking. Any chosen seafood or meat dish is a wondrous whirl of flavours for the palate, whether it’s exotic ingredients such as ginger, lemongrass and miso or hints of parsley, mint and coriander. Skevos’ research into leading restaurants abroad also paved the way for a multi-functional and versatile interior. Seated above the bridge overlooking the waterfront or beside the glass curtain walls with their picturesque boating backdrop, these are the ultimate reservation options for lunchtime dining. Sunset onwards however, the
outdoor full-service bar beckons. With reflections of light bouncing off the water and eclectic music surrounding the setting, ‘Εψιλον is a trusted favourite for starlit entertainment. Small plates are commonly ordered alongside the impressive list of cocktails, each boasting a bold and yet well-balanced synthesis. Skevos recommends the ‘Siko tou Paradisou’, that blends Commandaria and white wine together with lime, fig, papaya and carob purée. It’s an in-house treat that graced Carob Mill with second place in the 2012 Cyprus Cocktail Competition. ‘Εψιλον (Epsilon), the fifth letter in the Greek alphabet, represents the Earth’s five central elements. Just like its name, the restaurant has a completeness in the sensory experience that Skevos has mastered. His creative process promises to influence not only ‘Εψιλον but also new menus in the making. At the Peninsula Beach, just a stone’s throw from both the villas and the bay, Skevos is preparing a selection of dishes at its beach bar and restaurant for no-fuss, sun-kissed dining. In the meantime, ‘Εψιλον offers a plentiful taste of what’s yet to come at Limassol Marina.

He has been the authority for seafood in Nicosia for the past decade and Limassol is now home to the next stage of this expert’s story.
Petros Georgiou, Pyxida Fish Tavern
He maintains a low profile but his work speaks for itself and requires no introduction. Pyxida is a continuation of Petros’ success story that began with the Nicosia restaurant in 2004. The move to the coast was an important milestone to make its tenth anniversary even more significant. Its presence at Limassol Marina is relatively new but from its launch, Pyxida has immersed itself perfectly in its maritime surroundings. It’s the goto point during the day or evening for savouring high-quality seafood and just like the capital, its signature dishes are testament to the restaurants’ accolades by TimeOut magazine year after year. Overseeing a team of 11 chefs, Petros ensures that all is prepared and presented to the highest standard. To match the level of gastronomy, each dish arrives at the table with silver service by the most attentive staff. With his experience in the restaurant field spanning decades, Petros recognises the importance of a warm atmosphere in enhancing the meal. The wandering of the palate takes place within the open feel of the venue, flanked by natural light and overlooking
the Marina’s splendour. The soft furnishings in pastel tones and the option to dine al fresco on the outdoor terrace provide added comfort and flexibility to the visitor’s experience. The menu is strictly seafood yet is a taste odyssey in the menu that Petros has meticulously put together. Conscious of his multi-cultural clientele and their preferences, the selection covers a wide spectrum of cooking styles, from traditional to the more alternative. Many treasures of the sea receive a sprinkle of seasoning and served as standalone raw, fried or grilled treats. Carefully prepared tartare and carpaccio feature alongside your chosen fish or shellfish, cooked with precision. For the more adventurous palate, these same ingredients are enhanced with sauces, cheeses in a casserole or pasta dish. This culinary mastery is accompanied by a respectable wine list of local and international labels. It is this reputation of expertise and excellence that sets Pyxida apart. The island has countless fish tavernas but this refined seafood concept makes Pyxida more than just the catch of the day.

Cape escapes Savour the diverse beauties of the Cypriot coast and the nearby waters of the island’s neighbours. Yachting
3NM
Glass Corridor
A breath away from Limassol Marina, at a distance of 3NM, lies Lady’s Mile, an enticing stretch of beach lavished by improbably clear, crystal waters. A mere 15 minutes by motor yacht or an hour by sailing yacht, Lady’s Mile provides a lovely outing, with good holding, and water sports and family restaurants available in a protected environment. “Drop your anchor at about 3m,” advises local yachtsman Kleanthis Hadjisoteriou, “and then take a dinghy or swim the 100m to the shore” – you’ll be walking after the halfway point as the seabed is shallow. Anchoring closer to the Sovereign Bases buoys is advisable, to avoid the sandy gusts nearer the harbour. According to Kleanthis, a sea cave, framed by cliffs and perfect for a mid-morning swim, awaits a little after rounding Cape Gata.
22NM
Scenic Sanctuary
A little further west from Lady’s Mile, at approximately 22NM from Limassol Marina, lies Pissouri Bay. About an hour’s passage by motor yacht, and a three to four hour passage by sailboat, the Bay offers water-skiing, windsurfing, diving and restaurants, as well as the more exclusive services of the Columbia Resort and Beach Hotel. The Bay is also a secure stopping-off point for sailors en-route to the Akamas Peninsula or the Greek Isles. Holding is good, but “keep as far northwest into the Bay as possible,” advises Kleanthis, “because when the wind dies you get the swell, which, if you are staying on, can make for an uncomfortable night.” Day-tripping vessels powered by the wind will enjoy a particularly magnificent passage back to the Marina, as the southwesterlies ensure a fast and exciting sail home.
25NM
Romantic Flourish
Also known locally as Petra tou Romiou, Aphrodite’s Rock, considered the birthplace of Venus, is probably the bestknown symbol of the Island of Love, as well as a muchsought after postcard landmark for motorists driving along the Limassol-Paphos coastal road. From the Marina, the sea stack is approximately 27NM, translating to about an hour by motor yacht and five to six hours by sail boat, and adds a romantic flourish to a day’s sailing to more westerly destinations such as the Akamas. It is best admired from afar, however, says skipper Roberto Sciffo, with sailors advised to stay no less than about 100m off the Rock, as the perpetual swell makes it a less-thanideal spot at which to drop anchor.

50NM Turquoise Secrets
Charting a 50NM-course eastward from Limassol Marina, the pleasures of Konnos Bay include water sports, breath-taking views and fine dining at the five-star Grecian Park Hotel. But before you get there - it takes two to three hours by motor yacht, or seven to eight hours by sailing yacht to get there – the east side of Cape Kiti provides a nice place to enjoy a swim and lunch, to break up the trip. “Just give the reef that’s south of the Cape a good mile-and-a-half of clearance,” advises Kleanthis. Then, after rounding Cape Greco, there are protected, deep turquoise waters, locally called “antennas” to enjoy, as well as a sea cave and arch further on. Thereafter, Ayioi Anargyroi Church, high up on the cliffs (at a favourite diving spot), will be visible, marking the beginning of Konnos Bay. Moor in the most secure, northern part, and take advantage of the many water sports and dining options - perhaps enjoying a drink at the Grecian Park’s trendy Cliff Bar or a romantic sushi dinner at its Japanese restaurant, both overlooking the Bay.
68NM
Pristine Playground
“The Akamas Peninsula is a must-see for all visitors passing through,” says Roberto, given the 230m2 of pristine terrain, teeming with birds, butterflies and the protected green and hawks-bill turtles, for which the area is an important breeding ground. About four hours by motor yacht and ten hours by sailboat, sailors can break up the trip at the beautiful Coral and Lara Bays, both proximate to each other. Rounding Cape Arnaouti, there is the famous Blue Lagoon Bay, “great for snorkelling, with clear waters and boasting turquoise colours,” says Roberto, with further stopping-off points provided at the Fontana Amorosa, Aphrodite’s Baths, and finally Latchi Harbour. “If there’s a berth there, you should take it,” advises Kleanthis, because then it’s easy to rent a car and head for the Akamas nature trails, or for some superlative scuba diving.
205NM
Regional Jewels
Given Cyprus’ proximity to other famous Mediterranean locales, there are several options further afield as well. Depending on regional conditions, Lebanon’s Beirut Harbour (130NM) allows you to explore the antiquities and rich cultural life of this Middle Eastern city. Israel’s Tel-Aviv (180NM) is another alternative, especially for those wishing to stretch their mariner muscles while taking part in the annual Cyprus-Israel regatta. Greece’s beautiful Dodecanese also beckon, with the nearest island being the unspoiled Kastelorizo (205NM), as well as the southern Turkish coastline, which includes the less-known Kekova Roads, an enclosed bay protected by the four mile-long Kekova Island, boasting underwater Greek tombs and a Roman castle, and, further on, the scenic, well-equipped Gocek (250NM).
CYPRUS: DRIVING AHEAD Leading the drive towards making golf at Aphrodite Hills among the finest golfing experiences in Europe, director Andrew Darker reveals his blueprint for this prestigious goal
G
olf may not be the world’s most popular sport when it comes to fan popularity ratings, but with over 400 million fans globally it’s definitely among the top ten. Millions flock around the world each year chasing the sun wanting to enjoy their favourite sport year-round in renowned holiday destinations. One such destination is Cyprus. With all its well-known characteristics Cyprus has the potential to attract many golf tourists, especially during the winter months when many courses in central and northern Europe are closed. “There’s more interest and demand now in golf tourism,” says Aphrodite Hills golf director, Andrew Darker. “From mid-October to early April the warm weather here makes Cyprus a really popular destination.” Promoting the island’s golfing facilities is a “joint effort” as all the courses in Cyprus have “joined forces” with help from the CTO when exhibiting internationally, Darker pointed out.
Perfect Environment
Among the courses currently available, the Cabell Robinson-designed Aphrodite Hills course offers
a range of outstanding facilities to its golfers, either beginners or at a more advanced level. For beginners there is the three-hole academy, practice greens and bunkers driving range where a team of four PGA qualified golf professionals equipped with a full video swing analysis system are on hand to provide the very best in one-on-one golf tuition.
and overlooking the Mediterranean, provides for an impressive yet challenging game. Additionally, the Aphrodite Hills Club House, has a picturesque setting overlooking the 18th green while also providing Cypriot cuisine and international dishes that are accompanied by a range of fine wines. There’s also the Aphrodite Hills Golf Pro Shop.
There are small golf societies forming in Cyprus as the sport is becoming EVER more popular Aphrodite Hills is equipped with a large double ended driving range, a short game area with a pitching and chipping green. For more advanced players the 18-hole championship course, 6,299 metres long, a par 71, carved out of a forest of carob and olive trees on two high plateaus divided by a ravine

and what the distance is to the flag,” explains Darker. “It will be the first in Cyprus. We’re also looking at other improvements and investments to enhance the golf facilities further.”
Local Flavour
Currently golfers at Aphrodite Hills range from beginners to more advanced players, and various packages are available, catered to best suit their needs and skillset. “Aphrodite Hills is the most popular golf resort for golf packages,” remarks Darker. “We’re promoting these in international markets and we’re working with the other courses, so if anyone is staying at the resort we can also arrange for them to play at the other courses if they wish to do so.” Darker explains that these packages make it easier for golf operators to package their holidays. “We’re the only resort that does that,” he adds.
Darker points out that most rounds played at Aphrodite Hills are from international golfers, however more Cypriot locals are now getting involved. “There are small golf societies forming in Cyprus, little clubs with a lot of locals playing as the sport is becoming more popular,” he says. One of the initiatives Aphrodite Hills is taking is called a ‘golf revolution’ where representatives visit local companies and invite their employees to a free introductory golf lesson. “We’ve had some success with that,” adds Darker. Aphrodite Hills is also working with the Cyprus Golf Federation’s schools programme which aims to introduce golf to kids at an early age, also inviting them to play at the course. “We’ve also had big success with that as about 70 kids are now a part of our academy programme as a result,” Darker outlins.
Playing packages at Aphrodite Hills have been designed to cater more for existing golfers, while other packages include playing at the academy with four PGA qualified professionals available to train beginners.
Growing in popularity, golf in Cyprus is continuing on an upward trend as all the relevant players on the island join forces to promote their year-round top class facilities. It’s this joint effort that allows for an unforgettable experience as golfers from
around the world can enjoy world-class golfing on courses that present their own challenges. It’s also this continuous international drive that is naturally getting more and more Cypriots interested in the sport as golf on the island continues to grow in popularity. Preferential golf packages for Limassol Marina residents are available when booking through the Concierge Services.

Exploring New Depths There is nothing quite like a mesmerising school of fish playfully circling around you, while shards of sunlight break the sea surface to reveal the glistening clarity of the Mediterranean waters. Thankfully, in Cyprus, this most graceful of experiences is not only revered but also fiercely protected.
Diving
Cyprus offers one of the longest diving seasons in the Mediterranean, with year-round sunshine and warm waters.
There are a variety of reasons why people venture into scuba diving. For some it is the adventurous challenge of being immersed in an entirely new world. For others it is the sense of wonder that comes with exploring the vast variety of marine life; and for a few others it is the inimitable silence and sense of peace that can only be fully experienced underwater. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt the sport is seen as one of the most sensually stimulating experiences imaginable and Cyprus caters to divers’ needs in a number of ways. Firstly, Cyprus offers one of the longest diving seasons in the Mediterranean with year-round sunshine and warm waters. It is also known for its plankton-free high visibility and rich, carefullyprotected marine life, as well as for the world famous Zenobia wreck dive site in Larnaca. The island is listed as one of the top ten diving destinations in Europe, attracting a number of seasoned divers from across the globe every year, especially between the months of March and November. The marine-rich waters are equally as satisfying for the beginner as they are for experienced divers, with wrecks and caves to explore as well as increasing amounts of dive sites and parks being developed, the most recent ones being introduced in Limassol.
Two New Wrecks, Three New Sites
Scuttling ships to create protective areas for marine life is a common practice throughout the world, but more so in areas with high fishing activity. “Fish are playful by nature and need a safe space to breed,” says Steve Rumsby from Aloha Divers, a scuba diving centre based in Limassol. “The creation of artificial reefs and wrecks help create marine reserve areas, which are crucial in places with a booming fishing industry and especially in the Mediterranean as our seabed is filled with sandy underwater environments that provide minimal protection.” It is for this very reason that in early 2014 two vessels were deployed in low-current, sandy areas in the Dasoudi area of Limassol. Lady Tethis, a German recreational cruise ship, and Constandis, a Russian bottom trawler, were intentionally sunk to create the first two of five wrecks planned by the Cyprus Artificial Reef Program. “These wrecks and the underwater environments that they create are a safe haven for fragile marine species,” explains Steve. Since being scuttled, various organisms have indeed flourished on the wrecks, and continue to do so especially during the warmer months, inviting colonies of fish to feed within the buoyed protective boundaries, creating a hive of activity and marine life for divers to enjoy.
OnBoard | 73
According to the United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan, the two ships have undergone intensive cleaning and stripping processes and holes have been cut out in order to create safe wreck penetration for divers. Although the wrecks are too far apart to visit on one diving expedition, they are linked by the Limassol Marine Park, a third diving site developed between the two wrecks and featuring various man-made structures. Species sighted here include groupers, barracudas, sea bream, damselfish, jacks and even a rare monk seal was spotted amid the three new sites in 2015.
For The Playful Open Water Beginner
Registered in Cyprus in 1990, the 30-metre Lady Thetis now sits approximately 20 metres underwater. As the wreck digs into the seafloor a deeper depth is achieved closer to the keel allowing for a maximum dive depth of 30 metres. This site is open to licensed beginners and offers a number of easy swim-throughs as well as penetration options for the more adventurous divers. While the site is close to the marina, a boat is required to complete the transit to the site and a decompression trapeze can be found at the stern of the wreck, 30 metres from the wreck buoy.
A Rich & Manageable Diving Experience
The 23 metre long Constandis fishing boat was built in the former USSR in 1989 and now sits under 24 metres of water. It is considered an extraordinary introduction to wreck diving for open-water level divers and above, with many interesting options for underwater explorers such as easy access to the engine room and numerous penetration options. While it is 1.5 metres narrower than the Lady Thetis with a 6.8 metre breadth, the buoyed no-fish zone has given it equal opportunity to develop sea grass that has attracted a growing number of Mediterranean fish. It can be accessed by a short boat ride, and the maximum depth is just under 30 metres.
Preserving Our Underwater Ecosystems
Since early 2015, a natural reef has developed linking the two wrecks. This new Marine Park is the second dive park in Limassol and has been
These wrecks and the underwater environments that they create are a safe haven for fragile marine species. populated with a large-scale pyramid structure providing protection to entire colonies of fish while other man-made structures, cubes and amphorae create compelling diving experiences
with great visibility and reasonably low currents. “We have also set up special structures made of piping to encourage fish activity and nests where squid can lay eggs, Steve explains. The Marine Park has a fluid design and more structures are planned for the site in 2016.
Precautions & Future Plans
While all dives promise adventurous challenges for both beginners and advanced professionals, divers should plan their dive to all three sites on days with low winds in order to secure maximum visibility against the sandy and silty bottom characteristics while also taking precautions against dehydration and sunburn due to high sun exposure rates. While a narrow corridor is currently used by fishermen between the two wrecks and the Marine Park, dividing the area into two sections, negotiations are underway to join the sections and create a unified marine reserve area in the near future. The sites have been developed by the Cyprus Dive Centres Association in association with the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment and the Municipalities of Limassol, Yermasoyia and Ayios Athanasios. The project is co-funded by the European Union and the European Fisheries Fund, with the support of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation.
Time To Dive In
While a lot can be said about the amazing activity that is diving, especially in Cyprus waters, exploring relatively new sites is not an opportunity that comes along very often. Discovering the colours and wonders of an ever-evolving aquatic world is like nothing else, so dust off your log book, grab your buddies and treat yourself to a world of serene, yet thrilling, underwater magic.
