With a complete suite of end-to-end solutions for the packaging market, Borouge strives to offer differentiated circular solutions which help its customers and value chain partners to meet their own sustainability goals.

Plastics are an indispensable part of our everyday life and are used in a multitude of applications that add convenience, comfort, health and safety to societies across the world.

Borouge is a leading petrochemicals company that provides creative plastics solutions for the packaging, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, mobility and energy industries.

Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

At Borouge, innovation is a key driver of the company’s growth and success. Borouge leverages proprietary technology to develop advanced polymer solutions that provide competitive advantages for its customers.

With the launch of Anbiq™, its latest high performance linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) solution, Borouge now offers a complete suite of end-to-end solutions for the packaging market with its existing Anteo™ grades as well as Borstar® polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE).

Borouge is committed to driving plastics circularity so that plastics can be recycled and channelled back into production to reduce waste.

The company has invested in a Packaging Centre of Excellence to design and develop circular packaging solutions. Borouge also has a dedicated Circular Economy Solutions team focused on driving and commercialising sustainable packaging business models as well as developing educational programmes to advocate the importance of plastics recycling to the younger generation. Borouge is adding recyclates to its portfolio, advancing its plans to become an end-to-end solutions provider of both, virgin and recycled polyolefins.

“At Borouge, we are proud to be able to collaborate with our customers and value chain partners to offer innovative and differentiated solutions that create value, protect the environment and drive plastics circularity,” said Richard Horne, Vice President, Packaging and Circular Economy, Borouge. “We believe that strong collective action from the industry, regulators and the society is important to achieve a zero waste plastics economy and Borouge will continue to work hard to be a key driver in this journey,” he added.

Innovative Solutions for Recyclability

The Borouge team has successfully worked with their partners to develop and commercialise mono-material laminates suitable for end applications for everyday use in India.

“With its rapid development and urbanisation, we see great growth potential in the India market and expect an increase in the demand for flexible packaging solutions,” said Pratyush Bandyopadhyay, Head of Circular Economy Solutions at Borouge. “With our comprehensive offering of circular solutions, Borouge aims to create a positive and dynamic impact with packaging applications that enhance the quality of life and the environment,” he continued.

For example, a full PE solution was developed for frozen food packaging, using Borouge PE grades formulated to replace the conventional polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The result offered full recyclability capabilities without compromising on the packaging’s integrity, providing the required stiffness, with low sealing initiation temperature (SIT) that optimises filling speed and production output.

Another solution using a full PP solution replaced the incumbent PET/PE laminate of detergent bar wrappers to meet the objective of full recyclability. A breakthrough was achieved using a uniquely formulated full PP solution comprising biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and PP blown film, providing a sustainable solution with ease of processability, without compromising on the detergent bar wrapper’s performance.

In another example, Borouge created an ultra-high stiffness, high-density PE with a formulation designed for lamitubes to enable a mono-material flexible packaging solution for toothpaste tubes, which enable these tubes to be recycled rather than end up in waste streams. Demand for lamitubes is expected to grow in India and this solution will support oral care brands looking for options that meet their sustainability goals.

Borouge has also recently obtained the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) PLUS which confirms the traceability and compliance to sustainability standards of our practices across every step of its supply chain. This certification achievement paves the way for Borouge to offer Bornewables™, a new range of circular premium polyolefins produced with renewable feedstock derived entirely from waste and residue streams, to its customers in the Indian subcontinent.

Advocating the Importance of Plastics

Borouge is also committed to inspiring real behavioural change and established ‘Polymers on the Move’ programme, to educate the younger generation on the responsible use and recycling of plastics and the importance of a circular economy.

The programme was introduced in India in 2020, with plans to expand to more regions in the Indian subcontinent going forward.

Creating a Positive Impact Today and Tomorrow

Achieving a zero waste plastics environment is crucial for a better tomorrow. Plastics, as an effective packaging solution for the modern economy, will continue to become even more important in key applications supporting societies now and in the future. Sandeep Puri, Vice President, Borouge said, “The India subcontinent is a key market for Borouge; we will continue to work on innovating and creating solutions that fulfill consumers’ needs and safeguards the environment without compromising on quality and performance.”
