In the present age, technology is playing

very effective role in increasing the rate of economic growth. Today, each country considers it as the basic tool of economic development. Only capital cannot bring development in the country. It is technical progress along with capital which can boost the rate of economic growth. The impact of technology helps in producing high quality goods with optimum utilisation of resources. This will also help in expansion of the industry and generate new employment avenues. The polymer industry is well poised for growth with implementation of modern and energy efficient, present age technology.

K 2016 - A SPECIAL FEATURE

The Global Mecca for Plastics Technology

The extraordinarily good economic state of this sector and the positive outlook for the future characterised the world’s biggest trade fair for the industry and made for an excellent mood amongst the 3,285 exhibitors of K 2016 in Dßsseldorf.

T

he international plastics and rubber industry

presents itself in top shape. It benefits from

a globally growing end-user market with

high quality demands and stands for impressive

innovative power across the entire value chain. The extraordinarily good economic state of this

sector and the positive outlook for the future characterised the world’s biggest trade fair for the

industry and made for an excellent mood amongst the 3,285 exhibitors of K 2016 in Düsseldorf. Companies reported a host of new leads, many of which already led to closed deals over the eight days of the trade fair, between 19th - 26th October,

2016. Ulrich Reifenhäuser, Chairman, K 2016 Advisory Board, put it in a nutshell, “I have never

seen such a vast number of decisive customers willing to buy at a trade fair before! The number and

magnitude of deals, some of which were concluded

here spontaneously, as well as the many concrete enquiries about new projects by far exceeded our expectations! It was clear from day one that

customers wanted to not only find out about new technologies, but also purchase them. There is

strong investment in all our customer industries and in all regions of the world.”

This assessment held true for all ranges on offer at the trade fair. Exhibitors unanimously confirmed

that trade visitors were extremely serious about their business negotiations and showed a

pronounced willingness to invest. Furthermore, they emphasised the again higher percentage of international visitors and their very high degree

of professional expertise as well as the fact that a

disproportionately high number of top managers and company owners had come to Düsseldorf.

The 230,000 trade visitors from over 160 countries were welcomed to the exhibition halls over the eight days of K 2016. Delighting at the results,

Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO, Messe Düsseldorf says, “Just the sheer number of

experts visiting K 2016 impressively confirms the appeal and importance of the trade fair – since this number is once again clearly higher than at

the previous event in 2013. However, what is more important: the breakdown of trade visitors was of an exceedingly high standard. We can register a constantly good level of demand from Germany

and a disproportionately high level of interest from abroad, especially from overseas. It is known the

world over that K in Düsseldorf is THE innovation platform for the entire sector. A visit here is simply

indispensable for everyone wanting to stay ahead of the competition.”

The previous event in 2013 was attended by 218,000 visitors and 3,220 exhibitors.

The results from the visitor survey underpin the exhibitors’ view that the proportion of international

guests has risen once again: some 70% came from

abroad. Over 40% of all foreign visitors hailed from overseas – even from as far-away places as Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, the Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Oman, Madagascar, Mauritius, Surinam and Togo they travelled to the Rhine. As expected,

experts from Asia accounted for the largest group among foreign guests, which grew yet again:

nearly 30,000 experts came from South, East and

Central Asia. Guests from India again constituted the biggest group here, but the number of

visitors from China, South Korea and Iran also rose significantly.

Almost on a par remained the proportion of visitors from the USA and Canada with some 6% of all foreign visitors. Regarding

executives among trade visitors is extraordinarily high. Some two thirds are top managers or are in middle management. Almost 60% have the

final word on, or are decisively involved in, their

companies’ investment decisions. K plays an outstanding role in deciding which investment

K 2016, Pure Delight...

This mega event saw a truly global convergence of men and machines, thoughts and ideas, business and innovations. The excitement was palpable and energy was evident from the first hour on the first day itself. The elaborate booths and the visitor quality at the show clearly highlighted the optimism and business confidence that the companies harboured. The Indian presence was strong and significant, both as visitors and exhibitors. While a number of companies showcased their launches at K 2016, a few of them are featured here for you. From our perspective, I was delighted to reconnect to the extended POLYMERS Communiqué family of advertisers, who reflected on the magazine as the one that has set new standards in global publishing within the plastics industry. We returned motivated to further raise the performance bar to add even more value to our industry! I firmly believe that every single advertiser and reader of this publication has been instrumental in building the brand of POLYMERS Communiqué and taking it to the heights that it has reached today. A big thank you to all and in advance, wishing you Happy 2017.

they met with enormous approval: trade visitors

experts polled ranked this segment first. 46% said

developments presented to them by raw

auxiliary materials, while for 25% semi-finished

were thrilled with the wealth of new technical

materials producers, machine manufacturers and producers of semi-finished and technical parts.

Over 70% of visitors confirmed having received information on news and trends. By their own

accounts, numerous visitors wish to immediately convert these new insights in investment: 60% of

industry decision-makers said they had visited the trade fair with concrete intentions to buy while 58% had already found new suppliers. With these

new purchases, visitors first and foremost pursued three objectives for their enterprises: expand their

product portfolio, extend production capacity

and increase efficiency. The results of the visitor

survey also confirm the positive business situation in the downstream sectors of the plastics and rubber industries: 60% of the visitors polled rate

the current situation as ‘very good’ and ‘good’ while the same percentage even expect the

situation to improve over the next twelve months. Energy, material and resource efficiency were the dominating themes at K 2016. Also meeting with avid interest were new materials, innovative

recycling concepts, new application areas for organic plastics and additive manufacturing. Smart, quick and flexible lines and services were

in high demand among customers; Industry 4.0

dominated not only lectures and discussions, but was also demonstrated hands-on at many stands.

Commenting on this Ulrich Reifenhäuser says,

“The possibilities the Internet of Things brings

stimulates strong, serious interest – especially among younger, IT-savvy customers from throughout the world. Industry 4.0 is a theme of the future that will keep us busy for years to come.” Machine and plant manufacturing, which

occupies the biggest exhibition area at K 2016

with over 1,900 exhibitors, was also the centre

of attraction for visitors; a good two thirds of all

30

they were predominantly interested in raw and

products and technical parts made of plastic and

rubber were the main reason for coming (multiple choices possible). Albeit the smaller sector of the two, the rubber industry made a highly

visible appearance at K 2016 and underscored its importance in the areas of mobility, leisure, household and energy.

Visitors came from all important user industries

– from the construction sector and automotive to packaging and electrical as well as medical device technology, not forgetting agriculture.

They all again gave top scores to the ranges on display in the 19 exhibition halls: 97% ensured that they had reached their goals 100% while

96% said they were impressed with the line-up at K 2016.

Also going down well with the experts from

throughout the world was the line-up of accompanying events at K 2016, especially

the Special Show “Plastics Shape the Future” and the Science Campus. The Special Show,

a central forum for swapping information, thoughts and opinions, complemented the exhibits at K for the ninth time now. This year

saw individual themed days illustrate the impact plastics have on shaping modern living

environments. The agenda featured expert discussions and entertaining presentations and sports activities as well as exciting experiments.

At the Science Campus, exhibitors and visitors to

K 2016 obtained a focused overview of scientific activities and results in the plastics and rubber sectors and were given the opportunity to make

contact with numerous universities, institutes and sponsoring organisations.

The next K in Düsseldorf will take place between 16th and 23rd October, 2019.

Vacuum Metalliser Unveiled

O

ver 80 visitors from around the world attended this year’s BOBST Manchester Open

House held at its Competence Centre on

18th October, 2016 during the time of the K show.

The event saw the world premiere of the new BOBST

K5 EXPERT, the highest productivity metalliser in the world.

The BOBST K5 EXPERT, the next generation of the successful K5000 metalliser can run at speeds upto 1200 m/min, is available in widths from 2450 mm

to 3650 mm and can house increased roll diameters

of upto 1270 mm to meet new industry trends for improved productivity.

Once again, BOBST is setting new standards in

vacuum metallisation for the packaging industry; the K5 EXPERT vacuum metalliser houses the largest coating

drum in the industry at Ø 700 mm which improves collection efficiency by 16%; this means less aluminium

consumption and increased boat life resulting in maximum productivity.

The K5 EXPERT features design innovations throughout the machine including a totally redesigned evaporation

source providing the widest coating window in the market, upto 50% wider than some available

machines which translates in better coating uniformity and collection efficiency, minimising aluminium wire waste.

A more intuitive HMI screen and software interface makes the machine easy to operate. The new design

of the machine allows the operator to operate

everything from the front of the machine and to be positioned much closer to view the

evaporation source and metallisation process

through the strobe window; the new boat power controls are extremely easy to operate and are located in front of each boat.

Another brand new feature, unique in the

industry, is the Automatic Sequential Control (ASC) system which speeds up start-up of the

machine with minimum operator involvement

required, making the K5 EXPERT vacuum metalliser easy to operate.

In addition to the well-known BOBST winding

mechanism based on ‘true tension’ control, the new model incorporates low friction Ferrofluidic seals for an even better tension

control on the rewind; all-in-all producing

a virtually wrinkle-free, roll-to-roll vacuum metallisation process.

The K5 EXPERT has been designed with

reliability, serviceability and robustness in mind and as such has a host of new features

to give customers total peace of mind, maximum machine uptime and product quality consistency.

It also has a variety of energy saving and waste reduction features including ECO mode

which reduces energy consumption by upto 50% during stand-by and ‘Film Save’ mode

which has a synchronised faster shutter action (opening in just 5 seconds) and aluminium wire ramp-up to minimise the amount of

un-metallised film (waste) to less than 400 m per roll.

As an option, the High Deposition (HD) source has

an improved design for higher speed of operation for those metallisation jobs that require a high deposition rate of upto 4.0 OD. The

new

smooths the way for Brückner’s customers’ ‘Smart

Production’ and ‘Industry 4.0’. The focus lies here on a new way of operating lines, putting emphasis on the process view as opposed to the usual machine

view. This new operating concept is supported by an increasing amount of assistant systems.

Along with the ‘Energy Monitor’ which is already used to monitor energy consumption at all line

components, Brückner has developed new tools and assistant systems for inline measurements and

to directly influence important film values such as temperature, haze, molecular orienteering angle or also density and porosity. For film production this brings a variety of advantages:

Film producers will find it easier to produce the highest film quality all over the world,

independent of surroundings, time, climate and weather conditions.

BOPET Lines with 10.4 m Working Widths Nowadays the established working width for lines that produce biaxially stretched polyester packaging film (BOPET) is 8.7 m. For K 2016, Brückner Maschinenbau presented

a 10.4 m concept, for the first time ever in the world. This will fulfill the demands for

higher productivity in BOPET production: The new lines convince with around 20% more

with over 10 m working widths, from fewer energy consumption and, therefore, better overall profitability.

BOPP Lines: Lower Operating Costs with Higher Efficiency Brückner’s newly designed sliding system for transversely stretched film means speed increases

from over 600 m/min. At the same time, newly developed materials led to reduction of the lubrication use by over 50%. The new design in

combination with newly developed lubrication is the basis for lower production costs. Furthermore,

these newly developed lubrication materials are also available for upgrades on current high-performance lines.

A new winder system caters for higher line

efficiency. In the future, Brückner lines can take 40% more winder length by increasing the winder diameter from 1.55 m to 1.8 m.

More winder length means fewer roll changes and therefore less waste, which effects productivity, changeover time and energy consumption for the entire line.

and realise significant production savings.

Film and Sheet Extrusion Applications NDC showcased its latest FilmPro infrared gauge for the sheet,

film and coating industries. This gauge uses advanced optical techniques to measure a wide range of film and sheet properties

with high precision. NDC’s continuing NIR developments have

resulted in the release of new non-contacting, non-nuclear infrared measurement techniques using a single gauge for

multiple applications. NDC’s modular FilmProgauge can measure the thickness of clear, voided,

and CPE stretch films. It can also simultaneously measure the individual thicknesses of upto 6 different layers in co-extruded films.

Until recently, accurate thickness measurement

of voided films and battery separator films had proven difficult due to product density variation. X-ray, nuclear and basic / traditional infrared gauges all measure mass per unit area (gsm)

and then relate this to film thickness assuming constant density. NDC has now developed a new measurement model combining discrete

NIR filters and powerful gauging algorithms, and for the first time can offer with FilmProthe ability to independently measure direct film thickness measurement, the mass per unit area and an

independently computed density measurement of these products. Its unique design also provides

the capability for measuring the oil content in PE

GRASSROOTS APPROACH

INDUSTRY 4.0

Integrating IT and Internet Technologies for Manufacturing A topic for all companies; certainly for small and

nnovations, problem-solving expertise and highest quality are key characteristics of the German mechanical engineering industry. That is also what Industry 4.0 stands for. It is about combining information technologies with production engineering and

creating new innovative products and solutions. Without doubt, there are numerous challenges linked to it: data security, technical standards as well as necessary legal

frameworks. In addition, there are investments in research, education and training to be made and a strong demand for new business models to be satisfied. As international

competition around Industry 4.0 will increase, we have to face these challenges. There can be no doubt about it.

Current Crossroads – A Typical Scenario The small and medium sized companies in the German mechanical engineering industry are the backbone of the German industry. They guarantee growth and prosperity in the society. According to a study of the Commerzbank, the majority of companies

(86 per cent) has recognised the opportunities offered by Industry 4.0. Nevertheless, many of them are still reluctant to introduce solutions. They are reluctant despite the

opportunity that the introduction of Industry 4.0 solution approaches offers them to

Align People with Organisation Objectives

Ensure Business Success Q. Your pioneered CPVC in piping and plumbing in India. What was the market response then and what is it today? I am a Chemical Engineer by qualification. I started my career as Project Engineer in

Cadila Laboratories Limited. After gaining an experience for around a year, I decided to promote M/s Shree Chemicals, a proprietorship concern, in the year 1986. In

the year 1992, I promoted Kairav Chemicals Private Limited, a pharmaceutical

venture for the manufacturing of bulk drugs. Inspired by the success achieved in this venture, I diversified into the business of plastic-pipe industry by collaborating

with Specialty Process LLC, USA. This led to immense growth and development of the company, motivating us to introduce CPVC in the Indian market and thereby,

revolutionising the Indian plastic-pipe industry by replacing the conventional metallic system with polymer products.

The journey so far was tough as the product was new for the country and was

costly compared to the conventional product (i.e.) GI pipes (Galvanised Iron). When we launched CPVC, there was over 60% import duty on the fittings for the pipes. But, I was very confident that once the concept would be accepted, the products will get fair acceptance and success in the market.

Q. Dissemination of knowledge would have been important then and equally important today. Please comment. Influencing skills are paramount for leaders and create an atmosphere in which

people feel they are treated as peers, rather than subordinates. I believe that leaders must learn to deal with potentially difficult conversations effectively to demonstrate that they are able to take leadership on issues in order to

resolve them. The most important consideration for any business is the results that it is able to achieve and in order that this potential can be realised,

in 2012 and is expected to double by 2017.

These batteries are light in weight (lithium

used in small devices; second, cylindrical with a dimension of 65 mm long and 18.6 mm diameter (termed as 18650 cells) and third, flat cells called

prismatic cells (Refer opening figure). For example, Tesla Motors uses 18650 standard format cylindrical

cells in Model S cars. The battery pack consists 7,104 cells giving a total power of 85 kWh. Cu Current Collector

dimethyl carbonate). The cathode and the anode are separated by a thin film of a porous polymer, which

is insulating, but allows the transport of lithium ions from the cathode to the anode and vice versa during

the charging and discharging cycles. The porous

polymer film is called a ‘separator’ since it prevents the direct electrical contact of the cathode and the anode.

A typical internal structure of a lithium ion battery

is as shown in Figure 1. During a charging cycle,

lithium ions present in the cathode migrate through the electrolyte medium to the anode where they intercalate into the layers of graphite. An external

electrical power source injects electrons into the

anode. At the same time, the cathode gives up some of its lithium ions, which move through the

electrolyte to the anode and remain there. During this process, electricity is stored in the battery in the form

of chemical energy. During the discharging cycle, the lithium ions de-intercalate from the graphite anode and migrate across the electrolyte to the cathode, enabling the release of electrons to the outer circuit to perform the electrical work.

Separator – The Critical Component The separator is a critical component of the

battery and its properties have a strong impact

on cell production, cell performance, life and most importantly, reliability and safety, although

the separator does not ‘directly’ participate in any reactions1. It provides a physical barrier between the

anode and the cathode, at the same time enabling the exchange of ionic charge carriers, namely the

lithium ions, between the two electrodes to control

the number of lithium ions and their mobility. The

porous structure of the separator is filled with the liquid electrolyte (lithium salt dissolved in a mixture

of one or more solvents). Separators currently used are made of polyolefins; either, polyethylene or polypropylene which are rendered porous by

a mechanical mono- or bi-axial orientation during

film extrusion. In this respect, a polyolefin derived battery separator is no different than a packaging

film produced by biaxial orientation, a familiar

processing technique. However, the value addition to polyolefins in a battery application is huge.

Market Share Separator films are sold in rolls and priced by

square foot and not by weight. There are just a few manufacturers of polyolefins based separator films. They are Asahi Kasei (Hipore, www.asahi-

kasei.co.jp/hipore; and Celgard, www.celgard. com), Toray (Setela, www.toray-bsf.com), Ube (UPore,

Q. Composites are set to get a special platform in PLASTINDIA 2018. What opportunities do you see the composites industry offering? Composites refers to material composed of two or

more organic, ceramic, glass or metal substances that is lighter than sum of its parts.

They can be tailor-made to be 10 times stronger

than steel or a fifth of that metal’s weight. This

material offers stiffness, corrosion and fatigue resistance. It is these qualities that composites

are entering into the mainstream as a substance of choice. PLASTINDIA 2018 will dedicate one

RECYCLING PAGES

S.M.A.R.T. Technology for the Circular Economy

The circular economy package (CEP) seeks to close the material loop and transform the waste economy into an economic opportunity through reuse and recycling for the purposes of creating an ecologically sustainable trend. The package calls for 55% of plastic packaging to be recycled or prepared for re-use by 2025. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is the perfect driving force for the future of the plastics circular economy. The key to sustainability comes from highperformance, networked recycling technology that collects, stores, analyses and ensures the easy usability of process and machine data. This does more than just allow faster control over processes, it also makes them even more precise while increasing machine performance - a big plus for constant, top-end recycled material quality and the transition to a circular economy.

“Our planet and our economy cannot survive if we continue with the ‘take, make, use and throw away’ approach”,

Frans Timmermans, Vice President of the EU Commission.

The transition to a circular economy is a

stated global objective. The UN’s COP21

conference in Paris set up the political framework

to make this a reality. As an accompaniment to this

international objective, the EU Commission published

sustainable use of raw materials, plastics begin to be viewed and used as raw materials

bullet to keep this valuable resource profitable, sustainable and energy-efficient in its role in material circulation. This applies both, to

recirculating production waste back into to industrial manufacturing (ZERO SCRAP

production) as well as recovering valuable recycled materials in the post-consumer area.

S.M.A.R.T. Control Over the Future The transition to a circular economy is picking

up speed. This transition is being strengthened and becoming more transparent; thanks to Industry 4.0 and S.M.A.R.T. The goal is to achieve

stronger smart networking in one stable and

high-performance system. A close-knit network of machines, processes or even products allows individual parts to provide a smart response

to the actions of the others, essentially letting

them ‘speak’ to each other. This smart exchange works using sensor-based data. Some of this data is being collected already, such as on

However,

the data material is primarily analysed for troubleshooting as part of remote maintenance.

For advanced application areas, the treasure trove of continuously measured data still

remains untapped for the most part. This is
