升級 膠 樽 設計 還有什麼新可能? SDOI 的同學發 現 這 是 香港面 對的重 要 城 市生 活 議 題。 What’s next for upcycling plastic bottles? SDOI students look into new possibilities for this important Hong Kong city topic.

共享在街頭,「馬達 拉 膠 絲」流 動工房,讓 大 眾體 驗 膠 樽刨 成 絲,並以 膠 絲 編 織, SDOI 希望聯結 社區 分享 製 作 過程 和 對 話。 The Make4All “mobile factory” allows people to transform unwanted plastic bottles into ribbons for weaving. SDOI hopes to connect local community with shared production processes and conversations.

平等、無 架構、人 人有 話事 權、有機 成長,這個 自發的設計組織 SD OPEN IDEAS(簡稱 SDOI), 是 為了 鼓 勵 設 計 學 生 參 與 社 會 議 題,透 過 集 合 創 意 點子、研 究 資 料、討 論 和 實 踐,延 伸 設 計 的可能。SDOI 成 員 是 來自理 大 的 設 計 學 院 和 應 用 社 會 科 學 系 的 學 生。2016 年 開 展了首 個 實 踐 計劃,名叫「Make4All」,成 員每星 期 聚 集 於工作 坊,埋首 實 驗 切 割、編 織 塑 膠 樽, 嘗試在零浪費的大 前 提下,利用流 動設計作 坊 ( Mobile Factor y) ,將 塑 膠 樽(垃 圾 )變 成 有 用的實 驗 試 模。

Equality, flat hierarchy, shared leadership, and organic growth characterise the spontaneous organization of SD OPEN IDEAS (or SDOI for short). It encourages students to participate in tackling social issues through discussions, carrying out research, and sharing design ideas so its members will become ready to step forward and help others. SDOI brings together students from different disciplines, mostly from the School of Design and the Department of Applied Social Sciences at PolyU. In 2016, they launched the first experimental project called “Make4All.” To combat Hong Kong’s perennial problem of waste disposal, the group meet regularly for discussions and workshops, aptly dubbed the “Mobile Factory”, to experiment with different ways of transforming discarded plastic bottles into ribbons and weaving them into handcrafted upcycled prototypes.

SD Open Ideas SDOI 是一個集合設計想法的組織。由一羣來自 不同學科的理大設計學生發起,夥拍應用社會 科 學 系 同 學,集 合 眾 人 想 法 並 引 發 討 論,相 信任何身份都可以參與社會議題。2016年開展 「白日夢晚會」和先 導計劃 Make4All Project 流動工房。 SDOI is an idea-sharing platform to trigger actions for social good through design. Initiated by PolyU Design students from different disciplines and joint by Applied Social Sciences students, the student group believes anyone can play their part in urban issues through their projects. In 2016, they initiated activities such as the "Daydreaming Night" and the "Make4All" mobile upcycling workshop.

Sharing Ideas

Open Ideas 的想法 源自共享概 念,讓社會大眾

Open Ideas stemmed from sharing of resources, time, labour and talent. Can design, too, benefit from sharing? In particular: Design ideas, time, and lessons learnt from social experiments. Cindy Chan, a second-year student in the product design programme, initiated the project and gathered her classmates Francis Fung, Wendy Law, Kenny Leung and Katherina Spines, with Pico Ho from the Applied Social Sciences. They then started to make a few posters to recruit other members across PolyU.

共享資源、時間和人力。設計也可以共享點子、 時間和社會 經 驗? 計劃 發起 人 是 修 讀 產品設 計 的 二 年 級 學 生 CindyChan,她 找 來了同 學 Francis Fung、 Wendy Law、Kenny Leung、 Kater ina Spinos,還 有 應 用 社 會 科 學 系 的 P ico Ho,自製 海報招募成員。 「Open Ideas 的想法來自我在倫敦中央 聖 馬丁 學 院的 讀 書 經 驗。當時為了收 集 研 究 資 料,與 同學 們 組 織 共享 研 究平台 Open research,幫 忙 彼 此 在 短 時 間 內 收 集 資 料。因 為 同 學 來 自 不 同 國 家、背景,在一、兩 天 內 即 可 收 集 到 廣 泛 用家 意 見 等 資 料;回港入讀 理 大設計學 院, 發 現 校 內 不 少 同 學 關 心 社 會 議 題,於 是 想 集 合 眾 人 力 量,主 動 討 論、思 考 社 會 議 題,然 後 行 動。SDOI 的 遠 景 是 引 發 社 會 夢 想。」首 次 招 募 有 二十 多 位 學 生 參 加,其 中 約 十人 為 中 堅 份 子。計 劃 同 時 得 到 學 院 的 設 計 教 授 Rémi Leclerc 支 持,為 項目擔 任顧問。

“I got inspired to initiate Open Ideas from my experience at Central Saint Martins in London. Classmates there set up an Open Research platform to help each other collect research materials to save time. For instance, user feedback and surveys were collected within a day or two as students all came from different backgrounds. Back in Hong Kong, as I enrolled in PolyU Design and found that many students were interested in tackling certain social issues, I decided to bring people together. The vision of SDOI is to foster new social imagination." In the first phase, over twenty students signed up, of whom ten are very active. The group is developed with the support of academic supervisor Rémi Leclerc.

How does this student-run platform differ from other social enterprises or corporate social responsibility initiatives? Pico, who is in Social Sciences, explains from his discipline's perspective that “sharing resources is the new direction in social development. Social enterprises actively initiate reforms, corporate social responsibility programmes provide assistance to those in need, and voluntary organisations such as ours bring people together and take part in a more organic fashion. They are more apt to experiment and to co-create.”

何 分 別 ? 來自社會 科 學系的 Pico,從 政 策角度 解說:「共享資源是社會發展的新方向,社企角 色是 直接 發動改革,商業 機構關懷 社會則是提 供 協 助,自發 組 織 的好處 是 集合眾人 力量,有 機 地介入社會,實 驗 共享產品的製作。」 成 立初 期,SDOI 找 來了設計學院中不同學 科、 年級的同學,進行了一次簡單訪 談。「我們想尋 找 設 計 的 社 會 角 色,發 現 同 學 普 遍 認 為 設 計 是面向世界的工具、平台,我們也希望設計可以 與 社區 藝 術一樣,連 結人 與 人、人 與 環 境 的 關 係。」熱 愛環保的 Francis,分享他們尋找設計 定位的過程,也讓團隊找到首個項目的靈感。

In the beginning, SDOI gathered design students from different disciplines for a brief conversation. “We wanted to explore design's social role. What we found was that students generally see design as a tool and a platform to connect with the world. They also hoped that design could connect people to people, and people to their surroundings similar to the way community art projects do." said Francis, an advocate towards environmental issues, who told us how they came up with their aims and found inspiration for their first project.

SDOI 與 多 個 社區 組 織 和 NGO 合 作,在不同環保 工作 坊和市集, 介 紹「馬達 拉 膠 絲」和共享生 產的 想法,讓 市民 參 與 實 驗 設計。 SDOI worked with local NGOs and shared with the community the notion of shared production through various workshops so that people can participate in experimental design.


膠 樽、神器、生產車 「 膠 樽 浪 費、濫 用 問 題 嚴 重,除 成 為 垃 圾 外, 更 可以發掘它的 第二三生 命。」膠 樽 升級 的 計 劃,坊 間 也 有 不少,如用 膠 樽 製 作 裝 飾 物、器 具 等 等。Make4All 最 大 的 不 同,在 於 他 們 設 計 的 DIY 膠 刨,材 料 是 拾 來 的 碎 木件 和 刀片, 合成便可以輕 鬆地把膠樽刨成細長的塑 膠 條。 「我 們 前 後嘗 試了六七 個 版 本,才 找 到 最 好 的 組合」。膠刨放置在流動車上,歡 迎大家試用。 驚 喜 的是,它 真的可以 輕 易地把不 同 紋 飾、厚 薄、顏色的膠 樽,分割 成 近似 藤 料的「原 料」。 學 生 把 裝 置 安 裝 在 移 動 木 車 上,就 變 成 流 動 作 坊。項目現 階段為交 流平台,最 終 希望 流 動 作 坊可以為用家編織、製作升級再造產品。

Plastic Bottles, Cutter, Mobile Factory “Plastic bottles have become more of a nuisance and an environmental disaster. It is imperative to give them a second or third life.” While there are plenty of upcycling projects for plastic bottles out there, those programmes merely turn plastic bottles into ornaments or containers. Make4All is different as the group designed a DIY cutter for plastic bottles made with discarded wood pieces and a blade. With this device, they churn out plastic ribbons with the bottles. “We tried six or seven versions before we found the best combination,” Francis recounted. The cutter was then installed on a mobile workstation, for people to try out. Surprisingly, the tool easily produces rattan-like ribbons of different colours and textures using different bottles. The ambulant workstation with the critical tool mounted on it becomes an exchange platform for which people to share the making of their upcycling projects. 這個由 SDOI 成 員自製 的膠 刨 試 樣,用工場 剩 料和刀片 組合而成, 結 構 簡 單,能 輕 而易舉 地把 膠 樽分割 成 絲 條。( 膠刨尚在 改良中) This prototype of a DIY plastic bottle cutter, designed by SDOI members, was made of a blade and leftover wood blocks from the campus workshops. The simple design effectively shreds plastic bottles into ribbons, and is still under development.


好想交流

Aspiration to Share

SDOI 的 參 與 者 是 九十 後 年青人,除 關 心 社 會

SDOI is run by young people in their 20s. This new generation cares about social issues, cultural, historical, and environmental resources, and most importantly, knowledge exchange. Since this summer, the group has already collaborated with different social enterprises and voluntary organisations; held workshops, exchange activities, and market fairs; developed and improved the design of the Make4All Workstation. In October 2016, members also participated in the KISD (Köln International School of Design) Exhibition at the Cologne Museum, extending the upcycling ideas and actions aboard.

議 題、歷 史 文化 和 環 境資 源外,更 重視知 識 交 流。從 2016 年 暑 假 開 始,他 們 已 跟 不 同 地 方 的 社 企、自發 團 體、社 會 組 織 合 作,舉 行工作 坊、交 流 會、市 集 等,期 間 不 斷 改 良 設 計,修 定設計方案。在 2016 年 10 月代 表 成 員 更 前 往 德 國 科 隆 博 物 館 之夜參加 科 隆 國 際 設 計 學 院 (KISD)展 覽,將 共 同 生 產 Make4All 計 劃,與 海 外朋友 交 流。 「我 們 重 視 項目過 程 中的 討 論、提 案、嘗 試 和 思考。它 讓 我 們 更 清 楚 實 踐 的 重 要 性。」成 立 一 年 後, SDOI 重 整 團 隊 和 架 構,未 來 將 會 繼 續籌劃 活動和新項目,期望發展 成 為更 具 活力 的社區 組 織。

“Since SDOI’s founding, all the discussions, proposals, experimentation, and thoughts that we put into the project have been the most valuable experience. We are now convinced that practice is ever more important.” Since its first founding anniversary, SDOI has restructured the group with new activities planning for wider interests and talents of its members. They will continue to expand into a dynamic community organisation in coming years.
