Graduates and students of disciplines related to urban studies are kindly invited to take part in the international Workshop “Telychka - A Place to Care which is to be held on 11-16 May in Kyiv, Ukraine, organized by CANactions under curatorship of Theo Hauben from Hauben architecture & urbanism/ the Netherlands.

A continuous cycle of demolition and new construction is not an intelligent development for a city. Still, many city-makers prefer this way of working. Politicians believe in the idea of demolition and new construction, standing for decisiveness and progress. For investors and developers the business case of new construction is much simpler and almost always brings more profit. Each generation of designers imagines itself superior to a previous one. They also prefer a tabula rasa approach. A simple replacement of existing buildings by something modern, however, provides no better city. The tragedy in the demolition-construction approach is that there is apparently no meaning can be found in the existing context. It’s desperate to erase the history and try to find on a new identity in a radical way. The city is never finished, but buildings are not disposable products. The precise improvement of the city gives certainty. Environments remain recognizable, but at the same time future-proof. Stories from the past get a new meaning for the future. The adaptability of the urban fabric is huge and the possibilities for building a transformation are numerous. When you reconsider, repair and expand the public space and renovate, reallocate or transform the building a city gets better. In the workshop we seek clues in the existing city. With programmatic adjustments, architectural improvements and good urban embeddings we propose a careful and sustainable improvement of the city. Existing environments can be part of the history and future of the city. Theo Hauben The Workshop is aimed to collect interdisciplinary teams to work on contemporary problematics of the city of Kyiv on the example of Telychka site and its neighbourhood. Telychka is neglected post-industrial area (2 040 000 П2) located along the river Dnieper on the border with historical centre of Kyiv. It used to be an enormous lea, a true symbol of Ukrainian fertile soil. But in XX c. it turned into a tremendous industrial zone, symbolizing Soviet industrialization. And now this place may be become a part of Ukrainian Dream about the European future with its post-industrial culture and welfare. Careful and sustainable improvement of Telychka can become the first attempt of future Kyiv transformation that would replace the demolition-construction practice and unsustainable approaches.
