PRIMARY CONCEPTUAL COLLAGE
PROJECT ONE
SURF HUB
Brief To generate a strong, well resesarched brief for the Final Year Project. Concept Proposed A built environment dedicated to the surf community in Dubai to provide for surfer’s needs pre-surf and post-surf. Questions that guided the project Since surfing is an outdoor activity, then what qualities could this project propose to supplement their experience indoors? Essentially, surfers are nature lovers so how would this passion be translated in terms of a built indoor environment? Site Location Sunset Beach, Dubai Building Type Traditional two storey building in Jumeirah. Pitched roof. Primary User Surfers

SITE ANALYSIS
The site chosen was a building with two floors located at Sunset Beach in Jumeirah, serving as a retail clothing store.
routes inside. It had a pitched roof, which needed structural support, in case any walls were to be broken down.
The interiors were not up to satisfaction for the new surf hub concept, hence hypothetically, it was stripped down to its main structural walls.
Site context, history, structural style and responsiveness to its environment were studied using photographs, analysis diagrams and hand-sketches.
Since the building was of an older construction style, it consisted entirely of load bearing walls, making it difficult to attempt new circulation

A decrease in walking distance is acheived with the new design. This is expected to reduce workload on its primary users i,e surfers.
Dubai receives strong western shamal winds flowing from the gulf into the city. Re-orientation responded to the direction of these strong and positive winds which leads to maximisation of natural ventilation on all three floors.

Re-orienting the interiors allowed for alignment of the spectator deck with the primary view i.e surf at the surf spot. This permitted unobstructed views alongside providing a prominent link with the space’s purpose of existance.

MOOD AND TEMPERATURE SETTING
The colour theme was tested against differnt temperate lighting to experiment with hues and saturations. The constant amongst all the experiments, was the ocean plastic panel. Softwares used- Sketchup and Photoshop. The mood chosen is the salmon pink, beige and dark rustic green combination. With proper positioning of these colours, the design concept can be intertwined with its light reflectivity in the volume. Essentially, light bounces of the floor( glossy salmon pink), hits the dark back wall ( rustic dark green) and dies at the roof ( beige matte). It represents the journey of a wave which dies after its course only to be renewed again.

Further, the design features leather textures in contrast to marble finishes to put out the rebellious and bold nature of the brand. Settings have been lined with golden coloured metal strips. Product placement was also strategically designed, to respond to the visitor at differnt eye levels. White spotlight highlights each product section, guiding users through the concession store. Living up to the design brief, the design can fit more than one store size, with successfull rearrangement of the differnt detachable units.

CONCESSION STORE - PERSPECTIVE FRONT ELEVATION
This retail concession store was designed for a university project. The hypothetical client chosen for the design was a French fashion house, popularly called Balmain. Following up with the brand’s values, this final design drew inspiration from traditional french house settings. Window shapes and other such common patterns were experimented with.
