Trainers surfing at Bondi beach

Trainers put on their wetsuits and transformed into this image of very professional sportsmen/women. These trainers have an immense passion for the sport. They have pre-acquired detailed knowledge about wave conditions and riding styles. This is faithful to a point where they understand outcomes of each and every body movement on the board when in the water. This passion and professionalism did not reflect in the interiors of their shop space. Their experience during surfing remained profoundly disconnected from the single indoor space assigned to them. Involuntarily analyzing every built environment that I visit is a skill that I have learned over the past three years of studying Interior Design. This ability allows me to understand the impact of different design strategies on user experience.

Three years of Design August 2017, Sydney, the city is widely known to be a surf destination piqued my curiosity for surfing. I visited for half a month and took a surf lesson at Bondi Beach. I noticed the way that things worked there, at the beach. Tiny room, single space, hosted an organization that provided surfing lessons. The Space has cramped up changing booths, board storage, chairs for the staff and wooden boxes on the floor served as lockers. The entire area was very laid back with operations conducted in a semi- professional manner. But this, contrasted hugely with the activity and experience out in the water.

This section lays out initial ideas, reflection on the delay of choosing the project. It further leaves the reader with the central question that guided the project.

On further analysis, I realized that I felt more passionate towards the second idea and it had more potential as well, considering that it had never been done before by anyone.

September 2017, I came unprepared to the first studio session of my Final year. In some way, unintentionally my experience with surfing during summer influenced my approach towards the final project. During the initial discussion about design proposals, I proposed two ideas; the first being rethinking the design approach towards interiors of the bank buildings and the second big idea was the introduction of a surfing hub to promote the surf culture in Dubai.

The concept lacked definition, and this gap needed to be filled as soon as possible. It comes to my realization that if I had carried out some research work during the summer break, I would have been a step further than where I was at this point. Discussing the idea with my faculty initially came to be tough since there were many unanswered questions regarding the possibility of such a project. One of the major concerns I had was that, since surfing is an outdoor activity, then what qualities could my project propose to supplement their experience indoors?

Phase 1 - Final Major Project

Essentially, surfers are nature lovers so how was I going to induce this passion into an indoor environment? This document aims to lay out my development in design investigation and process by reflecting on the outcomes of the decisions made throughout the course of this project.

Geographical factors of Dubai

As mentioned earlier the project concept - ‘a built environment dedicated to surfing’ required plenty investigation. At this stage, the idea was still under development and demanded more definition. Hence, I began to break down the big question into smaller ones and began research towards understanding the quality of surf in Dubai. This activity was crucial and challenged the entire possibility of my proposal. My research ventured into the scientific nature of waves and the geography of Dubai’s location in the Gulf. This study responded to questions about the causes of ocean swells, favorable and unfavorable wind and wave conditions. There is a huge gap in academic literature on this topic in relativity to Dubai; therefore I attempted to gather knowledge on the subject by using non-conventional sources. There was a risk that the information I was tending to could be incorrect and describe merely a single perspective to the topic, which could be misguiding at the time. I persevered to choose information wisely while juggling between free blogs and images discovered via social media. Knowing that the information I needed did not exist, gave me an incentive towards defining the roots of surfing in Dubai. It inspired me to think differently and challenge the possibilities of surf in Dubai.

Defining the Project Since I had a lack of knowledge on the topic, it was essential to critically analyze the research by identifying all its possible perspectives, since that is the only way to understand something thoroughly.

Evidently, these characteristics are common to all surf cultures around the word. Hence similarly, several other such attributes of the culture remain the same regardless of the location.

To create a piece of academic literature that applied to the surf in Dubai, I developed a strategy to aid the case. Persistent reading of a variety of research led me to an understanding that, existing literature which examined surf in other locales such as Durban and Norway for example, could be applied to the setting that prevailed in Dubai. After all, the principles of surfing do not change with a change in location; it merely adapts to the prevailing natural conditions.

That was the key to this project, and I had found it.

Every surfer needs to possess a basic understanding of swell creation, and rip-currents, before getting involved in the activity. For exampleA rip current has the power to drag a surfer and push him/her over to the back of the ocean. So the first step for every surfer is to observe the behavior of their playground ( the sea) before attempting to ride its waves.

Surf in Dubai

I reached to a conclusion that the project was conceivable and possessed potential. Dubai’s geographical location creates surfable conditions for virtually nine months of the year leading to the existence of more than three thousand surfers in the city. There is a lack of a suitable indoor space to supplement their outdoor activity despite the evident need for one. For this reason, my project aimed to devise a social space in the direction of bringing together all surfers of Dubai. The proposed concept would service, much ignoredformation and growth of the surf culture. Just as in every city that hosts a developed surf culture, Dubai would obtain its surf community.

Choosing a Site - Rev. 1

I presume I did fairly well at this stage by approaching difficulties with patience and by critically understanding the conceptual nature of the sport.

The site plays a vital role in the success of a concept, and it also plays a dominant role in guiding the design process. For my course mates, with other design themes, I assume, it was easier to set a location since their project could work with locations within the mainland. However, for me, the options were very limited due to the nature of my project. It required proximity to a particular beach which has surfable waves.

Proceeding with the above, I made decisions on primary and secondary functions of the space. The activities that are core to the surf culture were kept as primary functions, and other functions were merely supplementary. Spectating, training, socializing and board crafting are the main activities towards which the building would respond.

Dubai isn’t known for its waves unlike other coastal cities such as Sydney, Bali, etc. so there wasn’t an obvious answer to my questions in that respect. Acknowledging that Dubai’s coast is relatively long and Board crafting

change in concept caused by locational availability. I kept going back and forth, at this stage. At some point I was allowing the location to influence my concept, and I had to constantly get a hold of my ethics, step back and let the users’ needs to influence the site option rather than the other way around. In the hope that further research into user’s needs would bring out possibilities or links to site location, I ventured straight into it.

hosts various beaches, I ventured into differentiating between them by identifying those that had surf and those that did not. As a result, Sunset Beach proved to be the only one habiting surfable waves which further limited site options. This search for a site location turned out to be more challenging than I expected. There are many other buildings in Dubai that could be used, many in the Jumeirah district, but if I did settle for one of those, I’m sure that my project wouldn’t have turned out the way it did. At that time, it was still an early stage in the project, so there were temptations to settle for a

While the study involved several detailed aspects, a few that guided the place setting, are mentioned further. Surfing is a very tiring activity due to which a surfer’s body demands recovery post the activity. Making this fundamental process of ‘going to surf,’ easier, could essentially function as a motivation for beginner surfers. Basic facts like- the average weight of surfboards is three kilograms, which varies depending upon the weight of the surfer came to my notice. This factual data could mean nothing to my project if I didn’t do what I did next. I facilitated an experiment to understand the practicality of the process. I chose to investigate the process; the effort put into carrying a board spread across 3.7 meters of surface in length while walking barefoot on sand. This experiment helped me conclude that the project site would have to be within 100 meters of a surf spot, accounting to approximately 120-foot steps. A 100-meter stretch would promote ease of access to the beach for users by reducing

hindrances and distance. This range would work well even with the spectators’ deck allowing clear sight of the surf spot. This approach to the problem made all the difference. It gave me a range of distance to search within. I am glad that I carried out this process since the personal perspective that I gained helped a lot throughout the course of FMP. Aware of the distance range from the surf spot, I counted on GoogleMaps to scrutinize properties along the coast of Dubai. In recollection of this process, my professor had consistently been encouraging me to walk around these locations personally to achieve better quality results. I did not act promptly to his advice and drove the entire operation via digital methods, quite lacking in my efforts at that point.

I have depended wholly on a digital source for information.

With time, I learned that the problem with using digital methods is that it is very limited in nature. The amount of information available online exhausts at some point and moreover all the existing data is secondary research since the image choices of these buildings were decided upon by someone else.

The organic process of self-involvement in research is more fruitful than other ways, but I find myself always falling into the same monotonous loop. Bringing together all the research, I discovered three potential sites, along with the coast, each not too far from the surf spot. I realized the need for a personal visit when more questions arose like “ how many walking steps does it take to reach the surf spot from the site?” , “ what are the sound levels like, in the neighborhood?”, “ how busy was that area during morning hours and evening hours?”. Therefore I made the visit and found answers to many

All that while I was viewing different sites from someone else perspective, so it lacked a personal, more creative essence. If I could reverse time and get back to this stage, I would not put all my time into digital research for a site location. Yes, I would use it to guide the process initially, while relying mostly upon personal diagnosis of places. There is a certain formality of attaining permission from respective Architects and Place owners, which Acquiring a site, was one is required To use any of these sites for my project. I of the biggest hurdles approached those organizations formally via email that I faced during the leading to which, sadly, I faced rejection by all three place surfing hub project. owners. I wonder if maybe I had chosen a site out of Dubai, that then, it may not have posed to be such a big problem. Was I inefficient ? or was it just a matter of luck?.

As mentioned in the previous section I had faced a failure in confirming a site location, which caused hindrances in the design process. However, time was of the essence, and in a positive notion, this pause at site location work gave me time to continue exploration into other primary research.

I was living the process, so it had become very easy to point out complex problems faced by surfers. Certain activities need to be carried out before heading to sea, and the same applies for post surf - heading back to base.

before gotten into such detailed research for a project. I was continually attempting to put these down as notes, in my journal, and add some supporting solutions to the problems. I used bubble diagrams and list to analyze links between the analysis.

I learned how heavy the board feels while taking it out to the ocean and the change felt when it’s in water and vice versa. I could recognize little details like slipping on the floor of the surfboard rental shop due to wet footwear. Textured flooring could help avoid such accidents; moreover, a surface that could absorb this water, sand, and salt, would serve a better purpose.

From my involvement in previous university design projects, I knew that at a later time in the year, these initial ideas could help guide my designing process. Many times while planning, I seem to get lost within our designs at some point and going back to our initial thoughts helps, to stay on track. This is an issue faced by some others of my coursemates as well.

This experiment also pointed out the harsh nature of surfing. A beginner at surfing gets hit and thrown down by rough waves many times before learning to take over and ride those waves. The sport is quite hard on the human body, which led me to the assumption that there must be some recovery time required for the body, post-surfing.

Certainly, I learned about the entire surfing process, yet I was well aware that I am not a professional in this sport. There had to be a difference between the surfing experiences of a beginner and a professional of 20 years. So, I planned to engage in an interview. I expected that it would increase the quality of my research. However, reluctance on my part led to a postponement in carrying out the interview. There is a difference between knowing what to do and doing it. I can’t understand why I was reluctant to the interview. If done earlier, it could have helped guide my project better.

Several other realizations took place after this experience regarding user experience. My design followed up to responding towards these experiences - to the human body that returns after a surf, to the zestful and thrilled surfer, to the beginner who had it hard, to the spectator who was supporting a friend and so many other emotions inculcated by the surf culture. I duly noted down these feelings and thoughts. I am very contented that I came through with it. I had never

I got a push to get it done by approaching deadlines. Hence I conducted the interview and in return got a very positive response. A meeting was arranged with a highly experienced surf trainer in Dubai.

19

Surfhouse- location of interview

The interview mentioned in the previous section guided me towards a potential site location. It did so by opening my mind up about using a residential building for the project. I had been steering away from residential buildings due to their lack of potential regarding property size and even more due to the private nature of their neighborhoods. The interviewee mentioned about the previous location of their surf rental shop which was in a residential area. It was on a block that was very close to sunset beach, in Jumeirah. Problems like increased noise levels in the neighborhood forced neighbors to complain against their organization which led to relocation their hub.

Acoustical treatments can be applied to the building to achieve minimum noise levels. In year two, I took a course on acoustics within built environment. Therefore I was confident that if needed, I could apply that knowledge to my proposed design. The problem was solvable. Following the above, my professors offered to share their database of existing buildings that could be of use to me.

Learning from these After skimming through several sites in the database, in a problems, I could understand joint effort with Mr. Bruce, we shortlisted three locations. Surf house Dubai

Site building: Ground floor plan ( not to scale)

On further investigation of the building types, I decided upon a building which possessed two floors and a suitable volume for the project. The construction style was not very favorable since it is composed of load bearing walls. However, its pitched roof seemed to give the building an individual characteristic. The size and dynamics of the structure were appropriate. Even more, I was glad that I had gotten a more traditional building because, in my opinion, its history added more potential to the design concept. At the beginning of the semester, we had an assignment regarding different strategies of redesigning an existing

building. Insertion is one in which the newer elements of the building are designed in contrast with the current style of the building. Previous years of design research reminded me that this approach had been used by Carlo Scarpa and other famous designers. In the other design projects that I produced during my time in university, I

hadn’t gotten the opportunity to venture re-designing by this strategy since all the sites provided to us were contemporary in nature. This building called out to me due to its conventional and vernacular characteristics. Since the site was within a residential neighborhood, alongside proper acoustical treatment, it was critical that the new design engages members of the local area without being disruptive to their peaceful surroundings. Consequently, to understand the context of the building, I aimed to carry out rigorous site analysis . The locality is on the final block of Al Thanya Road, facing the sunset beach. I proceeded onto site analysis keeping in mind the wider context of the building. It is within 100 m of the beach, Pitched roof - Part of buiding section

to the main roads, to the wind, the new beach constructions, the sunset and several other such elements. The aim was to design interiors that would claim the external environment of the building by allowing users to experience indoor-outdoor connections while developing a meaningful journey.

I attempted to learn newer methods of site analysis and further to try different ways of communicating this bit of analysis. Reporting research is one of the most important elements of design, and I have made several efforts to achieve this skill. Using vital feedback from peer reviews as well as draft presentations I learned to organize my findings in a more communicative manner.

Functionality Study

At this stage, I had a building, and the next step was to understand the possibilities the building. We called this process a ‘feasibility study.’

in a feasibility study. I learned that studying the feasibility of a building includes checking for options of fire exits, zoning, circulation patterns and many more functional aspects. I attempted to display several strategies for fire and safety planning, which I think I did considerably well. We had been studying building design codes for fire and security alongside creating inclusive environments. I tried to apply those laws to the existing building to see what its potential is.

The site was built using traditional methods. So it comprises of entire wall bearing structures supporting a pitched roof. There are several voids, which seemed to be a positive sign. I have always enjoyed working with voids. They are useful and allow the space to be more flexible. The selected building, has two floors, which instantly led to a conclusion that the spectators’ deck would be on the top floor or anything higher than that.

On doing this, I realized I was limiting myself regarding actually opening up the building to its new function. Considering fire and safety strategies had framed a box around the possibilities. I was afraid that the building might not have much potential to transform respecting its weight bearing walls. Instead of breaking away from this ideology, I continued The few layout schemes I with a mind full of limitations. I have never completely understood the significance of collage creation in the past, but now I do. It has helped in more than once instance during the journey of this project. I recognize that collages have a way of allowing one to put their thoughts out in a physical form, in imagery, that is not entirely defined, yet conveys the essence of the concept. Collages can be created efficiently with very less time required. This collage, helped me maintain my focus onto the initial aims of this project. If I could go back in time, I would do more collages than I did. During the design process, there are so many ideas that cross my mind, Collage - En Loge

I try not to let others’ ideas influence my design, rather, I allow their reasoning to change my thought process. This way of thinking lets me have complete authenticity in my work.

I learned to be open towards constant changing of design elements instead of getting attached to one design. In this way, extracting different schemes, allowed several comparisons to take place and to move forward meant putting together a whole new plan that was holistically inspired by the separate ones done before it.

Design Process Once feasibility of the site was understood, I tried to keep an open mind towards different design possibilities. I created several schemes, which were succeeded by design reviews. We had a significant amount of time for achieving our plans, and I used it considerably well.

Suitably so, load bearing walls are used to support the roof and to alter these walls, proper placement of columns and beams is necessary.

I achieved a more authentic process of designing. Reflecting upon this, I recollect a class we had in the previous year, in which we were looking to formulate a definition of “successful design. By the end the class, we concluded that good design is a result of detailed analyses and experiments done by predicting every aspect that the design

A good decision I made was to hide away from using my laptop and alternatively chose to lay out design schemes by hand. I believe a ruler or a drafting software limit creativity. Drawing by hand helped me withdraw from the tedious time-taking process of composing crisp and orderly lines on a digital software.

In conclusion, after the totality of this stage, I arrived at a conclusion that the load bearing walls could be disengaged by providing support with newly
