Landscape Architect as a tool to unlocking possibilities.

__As a landscape designer, I seek to be oriented to different places and people. I believe that a well-participated design can create a better territory and sustainability. __Since 2015, After working as a professional, every project in Thailand, HKSAR, and China helped me understand and use new methods to achieve goals. A design solution was created using ideas, people’s participation, and terrain-forming, merging the design with unique and individual environments, society, and economic approaches. __However, I am ambitious and still eagers to find new possibilities and interpretations by learning from a different mind, context, and people. To seek fresh opportunities, combining a new invention with a professional knowledge laid within this industry, to achieve and catch the fast-pacing world. __This handbook will explain my approaches and experience of landscape architecture design, 5 years in university, and 6 years of professional works both in Thailand and HKSAR. I hope you enjoy this handbook well.

This project is an 83,000 sq.m. top-tier exclusive Villa located in Pudong, Shanghai, with low-density residential spaces and ultra-luxury communal area. Landscape philosophy inspired by ‘Hidden Luxury’ is to create a great escape from the chaotic CBD by giving a timelessness and natural phenomena as a media to providing a relaxing experience for residents. People could harmonize with the mountain landscape by emphasizing the sensory and spiritual aspects of the architectural experience, from the precise yet simple composition and ‘presence’ of the material to the handling of scale and light effect. Re-establish a balance between architecture and nature and help people find their hidden-luxury retreat. /05

This high-rise condiminium project come as a very challenging task for me, because its competitiveness design of every developer. There are so many milestone company, such as, Shma / T.R.O.P / L49 and etc. so I think I can’t handle these kind of project by myself. However, everybody seem to push me forward as a young and energetic landscape designer. I appreciate and thank for all of designer team for a unforgettable time.

BIM on REVIT Platform I have heard and studied this “BIM” word for a long time in the university. This project deliver me the true understanding and its potential in highrise-developer field. With meaningful helps from Wisdom ,Co .Ltd. as BIM landscape coordinator, we are able to produce a drawing full of detail and shorten a coordination process. This project was collaborated on BIM platform using Revit to communicate with design and construction team. It was chanllenging because we hadn’t any Revit standard and data for landscape design yet in 2017. However, we can push Revit design method to construction drawing, thanks to well-collaboration of BIM Manager which each designer had provided.

/16

Flora-centric design My first landscape design of 48 stories condominium under collaborationed with RAFA Design office and Sansiri PLC, located at the center of an excellent communication network, “Retreat” with an escape from the chaos of city life without sacrificing its comfort and convenience, “Rebound” is a place where you can take a chilled-out walk or hang out with friends, just like at home. We concluded our design to keep a feeling when going into a deep mountain as a character of this condominium. I decided to use “zig-zag” as a guiding pattern toward the new-discovering path to represent a feeling of “Oka” (mountain in Japanese). And tender down with simple and clean design elements for the “Haus” feeling. Due to the highly competitive high-rise residential market in Bangkok, most of them must have a unique and strong sense of design. On a contary, we use a dramatic yet straightforward instead to ensure that residents will have good quality space and a friendly environment. We play with the sequence of space and variety, a layer of height elevation and species of plant combination without too many exaggerated on a hardscape. This combination will grant a pleasant experience of living in oka HAUS. /17

Micro climate design There’s a project, a high-rise and mixed-use complex in SZ. It’s eye-catching, high-performance, and spectacular— big plaza, Highly interactive LED, high-end luxury shopping mall. But we also proposed a way to bring nature back to connect people with their city and their built environment—a proposal to create a collection of microclimate designs. The idea is, do whatever to maximize comfortness. Visitors need to be able to walk enjoyably, especially in Shenzhen summer. Otherwise, people wouldn’t use it. Our design tends to lower the temperature in a given area, making it more comfortable than outside, 2-3C. Many different techniques will be used to achieve that, such as water features to cool down the ambient temperature. An opening to let the breeze flow in or borrow the indoor air-conditioning system to help achieve that. /36

/37

Maximize tree coverage In general, we intend to give the sense of New Urban Forest. By turning the whole floor into a greenery park where visitors can go shopping along with the tree and comfortable climate. Forest and trees are valued simply for their effect on health and happiness. Trees make the air quality better, improve the environment and help people feel good just because there are trees there. That’s why I imagined this would be an added value for our proposal of commercial places, a design solution that would allow people to access and truly immerse themselves in nature. Another benefit is these trees make the scale of the space more proportional. In some areas, surrounded by an enormous office tower and high-rise building. When you walk into that kind of space, you will feel small. That’s not a comfortable feeling. The tree can help to protect and conceal you from that. So we use some knowledge to pick the species for it, their form, height and foliage type, thick and leafy or light and airy, for each kind of space. /38

Comtemporary Art Space An urban public park that people can enjoy their leisure activities as well as admiring the contemporary art pieces, lively seasonal trees can enhance overall feeling of an Art Park.

Why leisure garden has to be natural and simple? We suggest to transform a garden into a whole piece of art. We pull-up the surface to create extra recreational spaces, being terrace / staircase and sitting space under the structure with a outlook like simple geometry shape and form. This central space acts like a BIG ZIPPER to attract worker to gather or relax. The rows of green with low-maintenance and low-water-use plants add layers of nature and privacy to the plaza.

Otherworldly landscape Noticing the trend of more and more young people are spending their days in the unreal internet world at home and office, being less healthy and lonelier. we as the landscape designer, are trying to promote some fun and creative city lifestyle that can serve the citizens with mental and physical needs. This is a mixedused commercial project we proposed. In here, we are trying to bring in a legendary world to the truth.

Theme-oriented design Lemuria, is a theoretical contient that believed to have the prehistoric supercivilization, with highly developed spirit and healing culture. it is also cliamed to be the homeland of human ancestors, that has highly advanced technology and “Eden Garden” ecology system. Lemuria is sunken beneath the Indian Ocean, and its a myth contient exist the same time with “Atlantis” and “Mu”. In each space, we assign them different themes and special quality, with adding the outdoor commercial activates to activate them. We carefully select the types of brands that will work the space, bringing in the exotic feeling flowers to match that surreal feeling, which is very popular among the young generations. To better serve the commercial requirements and people’s need, we also intentionally to make every space flexible. Programs can be changed acoording to the commercial needs or season and climate change, and also serving for special fesitival or activities. We always provides the client with possible acitivies that will fit to the space to help them with brand promoting. Interesting programs can be a great force that attract people to your intention desitination and bring the vatality to the space. /52

“Tree on 3” community mall renovation is my first project as landscape architect after graduated, and also first time to handle project by myself. As landscape architect, my role is to change this mall into modern-look design. It will succeed and attract most of people around Rama III Road, If their facade and interior space are sycronized and lead its as an outstanding mall in around here. So I led this project as a landscape space to “pause” and attract people who passing-by and turn them into possible user of this mall.

This commercial mall renovation, located on Rama III Road, Bangkok, wanted to change their appearance, fully covered with green. It’s coming up with the “Tree On 3” concept to revitalize its frontage with landscape and plaza. There are two interesting points of this project. First, an entrance plaza; I proposed to turn the plaza into an area that can support local gathering activities, walk corridor, and an approaching area for this mall. I treated the plaza as a graphical art landscape with a mixed pattern of grey gravel wash, along with trees as its name. I used the entrance step as a connector of the mall and landscape area, integrated with seatings, planters, hanging planters, and water features to create an essence of the garden and nature. Second, this project has a vast hanging planter facade. It’s challenging to make this green facade withstand Bangkok heat and pollution. With meaning help from landscape and construction consultant, Mr.Gullyawat Lertpeerakorn, we delivered a green facade structure and catwalk design with easy maintenance.

Bao’An, an industrial district that relies on high-speed inter-city railways and airports, is seeking an opportunity to decorate its old drainage canal with a new facade and hopes to attract tourism and investors into the city. As a landscape firm, we strongly propose to use this chance to improve the overall city’s images further and unearth a forgotten social value that the stream of the industrial era has engulfed to show the sublime connection between Chinese communities laid inside Bao’An culture.

Greenway as a key to connect neighborhood and sustainable ecology system. With ecosystem as a priority, the current pedestrian, road, Watergate on both banks must adapt to its condition and a reasonable safety and economy solution. The idea is to soften a concrete river bank with vegetation and a multi-level design to recover a local ecosystem and achieve a harmonious habitat for flora and fauna in the city. Enrich the river facilities to make a greenway into an outdoor functional area, an interactive water classroom or museum, or even bring back local culture by providing a possible event planning.

Reconnecting water cultural network to enhance its benefit. Apply modern residence’s diverse livings with the greenway and offer open waterfront activity area . You could Yum Cha in the morning, talk with your friends and play the Majiang at noon and do public square dancing in the evening. The design uses 4 space improvement strategies to efficiently use the space and release the squeeze space. Mainly follow the goal of unblocked circulation and promotion of green ecological space, opti-

mize the functional layout of the river bank, increase pedestrian greenways, optimize public parking lots and expand river bank green spaces. Firstly, Improve the slow-moving system, increase the overhanging walking space, broaden the usable area within the blue line, and restore the smoothness of the blue road. Second, clean up illegally constructed buildings and increase corporate

office and traffic spaces. Third, optimize the parking space, rebuild the vertical parking garage, and open up the connection between the slow-moving system and the river. Fourth, open the rigid revetment, restore the ecological space, and at the same time meet the needs of urban waterfront development space.

/64

Preservation Design According to the characteristics of different sections of the site, by changing the existing revetment and designing diversified landscape revetments, build five ecological circles of community, grass slope, wetland, river and grass ditch respectively. each unique section of the canal integrated the biodiversity habitat design, provide for wildlife such as fish, squirrel, and some insects. connection of the park and green belt /65

create the animal friendly territory. landscape elements the benefit the lives of the animal are placing into the design to create biodiversity and attract wildlife. human gathering area and wildlife habitat blends in together, provide spaces for all the species. landscape design will copporate with variety of techniques to deal with flooding and run-off water which caused by

heavy rain, high tide or swollen rivers. our sponge city plan could mitigate and improved water quality by providing an area to absorb s torm water, cleaned by selected plant and reuse at the last process for irrigation and drain to nature.

OUTSTANDING AWARD - IFLA APR 2017 In Analysis and Master Planning Category Located in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Northeast of Thailand, Wayu Wind Farm development project aims to enhance the leftover land (totally 793.1 acres), creating public benefits and ultimately yielding environmental, social and economical sustainability. The construction of 30 wind turbines and needed infrastructures, has caused numerous broken pieces of land with various sizes of borrow pits scattering over the area. The disconnectivity of patches and corridors creates real challenges for ecological restoration within the site. Thus, this project has strategically turned site limitations into opportunities to reclaim the land, optimize resources, and establish longterm sustainable agricultural system. With the concept “turning waste land to prosperous land”, three main strategies for land reclamation including hydrological planning, soil remediation and reforestation processes are proposed along with the 3-phase planning of physical structures and supported facilities for agricultural, research, producing and recreational activities. Practical strategies with step-by-step planning that could be real implemented to the site and specific techniques in each process are clarified. The proposed programs with cooperative activities do not only create a complete cycle of agriculture operational system but also help generating career and thereby income for the locals as well as find ways to share benefits back to the public.

/69

Judge’s citation: Impressive thorough investigation and careful analysis of land formation process, ecological connectivity of various design typologies prior to recommendation. The demonstration of ecology and sustainable vigilance distinguishes this project amidst complexity of landscape and still yet embrace integrating energy research, social and infrastructure through site remediation studies. This supersedes the normal purpose of most windfarm being independent and functional energy generators.

Extreme condition of site after wind turbine planting. It lost their nutrition and soil, can’t held surface water runoff or regain vegetation.

Challenges

This 832.6-acre highland, located in Subplu village, Dan-khuntod district, was once prosperous mixed forests but has turned to be a vast agricultural area for decades. Potato commonly becomes a choice of crop due to its ability to grow in sandy soil and extremely dry condition. However, long-term monocropping not only degraded soil quality but also caused oversupply and attracted pests and diseases. Through the in-depth macro and micro analysis of the area, three serious problems were found consisting of 1) severe land draught due to the low water-holding capacity of sandy soil, 2) poor soil quality resulting in low production and limited choice of crops and 3) Local farmers’ unawareness for consequences from long-term monocropping which leads to unsustainable agriculture. However, the calculation of annual rainfall quantity, slope analysis and water storage in the area indicated that there is in fact large amount of rainwater (800,000 m3) run through the site each year; but real problem of drought comes from the soil which cannot retain water. Additionally, the fact that the amount of water in the reservoir on the east is adequate for all-year agricultural activity around this area made this project decided to tackle with water-supply problem by attempting to build our own reservoirs and not disturbing local resource. /71

Furthermore, the study of existing structure and site physicality lead to an indepth understanding of site characteristics, its potentials and limitations. Apart from visual scenery of wind turbines which form the characteristics of this place, numbers of existing borrow pits, ranging from 1.98 to 11.86 acres with each 3-meter depth, can become significant resource for creating water storage within the site. This project aspires to revolutionize the agricultural system of the area (not just within the owned land but also enlarging the effects to the wider contexts), leading to the achievement of sustainability in the long run. Thus, in order to “turn waste land to prosperous land”, two crucial questions which thereby set the goals of this project comprise: 1) How can we revive “lives” back to the area? – Lives in this sense covers natural elements of human, animals, plants, and their living systems. 2) How can we optimize all resources and land potentials for local and public benefits? Accordingly, three main strategies for land reclamation are proposed, consisting of 1) Turning the stream corridor and borrow pits to water reservoirs, 2) Improving soil condition by growing green manure

crop, and 3) Creating ecological flow and connectivity. Accordingly, the implementation plans for each process, including hydrological planning, soil remediation and reforestation, are divided into three phases : Hydrology, Soil and Reforestation

Hydrological Planning The urgent task is to create water reservoirs – a stream corridor in the middle of the site together with numerous borrow pits need to be restored by improving their water-holding capacity. Hence clay and PVC liners will be applied on the surface of the stream and every pit, together with the construction of check dams every 2-meter height along the stream corridor. Additional plantations on the edges will help protecting soil moisture. While waiting for rainwater level to be increased in the second phase, soil humidity around the reservoirs will gradually increase and expectedly expand to the wider area (aquatic rings), allowing vegetation to grow naturally. The last phase is to build water channels along roadways, creating a complete network of irrigation systems.

/72

/73

Reforestation Process Both natural and artificial reforestation techniques are adopted in this project. Young trees are highly-dense planted with additional fertilizer and mineral soil. The distribution of perennial plants among these young trees provides shading, protects soil moisture and adds leaf compost to the plants. Such technique will enable these trees to grow up-to 5-6 meters height. They are expectedly able to survive in natural condition within 3 years, follow by natural succession process within 10 years. The first phase of plantation occurs in the moist area along the stream corridor. Selected indigenous plants surviving in flood condition will be used together with the transplanting of preserved-existing trees. The restorations of water, soil and vegetation according to the 3-phase implementation plans will gradually increase the richness of the whole area, leading to the prediction of expanded forests (green rings) around water resources. The following master plan is therefore designed in corresponding with the speculated future forests.

/74

/75

Final Master Planning and Resource Management Aiming to be a prototypal project bringing prosperity to the locale, agricultural, human and renewable energy resources could be innovatively utilized to maximize benefits for both locals and public. Hence the concept, “Innovative Organic Wind Farm”, is initiated and applied to the proposed planning for physical constructions along with land reclamation processes. Various activities serving 4 groups of people comprise farmers, merchants, students and researchers, and visitors are organized into five zones: Commercial Zone, Recreation Zone, Research Center, Agricultural Zone and Production Unit. Wayu Wind Farm is the initial project in Thailand to develop wind farm in environmental-friendly ways, creating benefits for local community and yielding long-term sustainability. Outcomes from the project do not only advance agricultural system in this area but also generate careers and income for the locals. The transforming cropping system would also help establishing environmental awareness in the community. Lastly, this project would build-up good reputation and become a new tourist destination for Nakhon Ratchasima in the future.

/Fhang Geothermal Powerplant Chiang Mai, Thailand 2014 - 2nd Semester final project of 5th year student of landscape architecture studio. Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University

Renewable or sustainable energy can be heard everywhere nowadays, due to global warming crisis or energy sufficiency problem. However, there is one type of sustainable energy left undevelope in Thailand, Geothermal energy. It was research 20 years ago. In 2015, with well-step forward technology and efficiency of sustainable energy, geothermal can revive itself. My propose is adding value of old geothermal powerplant site ,abaddoned and adapted to tourist spot, with energy spot and reforestation. With help of local people and Knowledge of staff from Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, I can deliver a magnificant design with heat / steam / engineering structure.

Combining ecology with engineering and Geothermal energy.

from waste water and thermal retention pond, to restoration factor of Fhang

First , I have an interesting about green-technology and beautiful landscapes of the geothermal area. “How to provide any production process but still can be used as a reclamation area” I questioned myself. So I decided to take a look about nature-based power plant to create more landscape vision for myself. With product left from energy producing such as hot water, richful mineral or sludge from underground. All can be use as high-quality fertilizers for individual vegetation and ecology. For example, I can use warm water to maintain diversity in the winter and also use it to keep underground temperature still warmed. Then I categorized vegetation and ecology with different critical factor (Temperature, soil depth, mineral)

With existing landscape of Fhang is like dumped area full of steel pipeline, sandhill for maintaining tourism, artificial hot spring pool and large pavement area for a parking lot. All of them can be presented as a whitewash of the natural area. So I decided to find a natural and sustained process that can reclaim Fhang back from as its skin being showed. Like brownfield or material-reuse project, my mind comes to think of restoration factor, crushing concrete method and changing of unnecessary structure, that can increasing growth of local vegetation. Geothermal waste product ,hot water / mineral / sludge and steam leftover from geothermal power processing , will be used for fungi repopulation as food or shelter.

Expanding usage of engineering structure into people perception The characteristics of the project are the dominated abundance of forests, the ecology of the pond and structure of a geothermal power plant. The challenge of the project is to promote the natural beauty of the Fhang and highlight the unique beauty of nature. Design elements are selected for difference function and users. The people who come within can not recognize the difference of the design space and natural areas

With help from Engineering Faculty and Science Faculty of Chiang Mai University, I can organized typical of geothermal power plant into diagram above. Each of them have difference amount of water needed for injection or water production/ structure or design of each other typical which helped me a lot to study their applied character with landscape.
