SOCIETY OF ROOMS
This study addressed the connection of one room to the next, while maintaining a feeling on expansion and compression. Each room contains a horizontal band that correlates to that of the horizon and is always visible throughout the society. The introduction of vertical members is used to filter light and create a progression through space.

SOCIETY
7
The society is created by creating directionality through the diffustion and manipulation of light. Each room within the society is essentially the same while the volume increases the proportions of space to lighting stays the same. The society spirals with the inner wall remaining lit so as to guide one through the space towards the next room in the series.

The mosque typological tree is the result of an in depth historical investigation done in collaboration with Daniel Vrana and Ramses Gonzalez. Out of many mosques that were analyzed a group was chosen that represents a variety of mosques spaning from the 1500s through the present day. Each mosque containted a lighting technique. These techniques were compared and contrasted, which resulted in the typology tree.

THE MOSQUE
MOSQUE STUDIES
The mosque design proposal has gone through a variety of changes. Three seperate structures with unique lighting conditions were merged to create a more unified structure. This unification brought about the introduction of a roof-top courtyard as well as the introduction of light wells.
With the introduction of light wells came an investigation into the diffusion of light in the lower level of the mosque complex. Other studies were also done to evaluate the lighting conditions established in the society

The culmination of the research and the studies done this semester can be seen in the final project. Lighting and formal elements taken from both the studies as well as the society of rooms have been utlized. As seen in the studies the three spaces have been joined while maintaining a seperate identity for each, a controlled light from above in the prayer hall, diffused light in the reading space and an open air entry and circulation space. When the three spaces intersect light wells are formed in order to illuminate the lower level. 32
