This document includes some practical suggestions to help new Directors and Coordinators get to know and deepen their understanding of the history and spirituality of the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer), to spread this worldwide prayer network and to promote monthly intentions.

WHAT IS THE POPE’S WORLDWIDE PRAYER NETWORK?

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network is a Pontifical Work, with the mission of mobilizing Catholics through prayer and action in response to the challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church. These challenges are presented in the form of prayer intentions entrusted by the Pope to the entire Church. The foundation’s mission is inscribed in the dynamic of the Heart of Jesus, a mission of compassion for the world.

Identity

The Pope’s Prayer Network addresses the challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church. It is present in 89 countries in the world, with more than 22 000 000 Catholics in the year 2022.

Mission

To pray and work to meet the challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church identified by the Pope. His prayer intentions are key for our prayer and mission.

Vision

To be apostles in daily life, through a spiritual pathway called “The Way of the Heart,” which transforms our way of being at the service of Christ’s mission, a mission of compassion for the world.

In previous years, there have been some misunderstandings regarding the re-creation process. Some people thought that the Apostleship of Prayer did not need a re-creation or reduced this process to a change of name, communication and marketing projects.

"In fact it is a deepening of our mission that over time has lost its orientation" as Father Ramière SJ (1861) said in his time. That is why we insist so much on the Pope's prayer intentions, which are the challenges of humanity and of the mission of the Church, so that this prayer becomes life, relationship, solidarity, mission.

This is why we insist that the Pope’s Prayer Network has a specific way to live and understand the devotion of the Sacred Heart, which not everyone perceives. This specific

1

way that Fr. Ramière (1861) clarifies, and that sometimes and in some places we forget, has an apostolic perspective. The offering prayer has this apostolic perspective and is a prayer to make oneself available for mission. This treasure is presented today, in a coherent approach, in what is called: The Way of the Heart.

Fr. Ramière SJ, who re-created the Apostleship of Prayer in 1861, gave to the devotion to the Heart of Jesus an apostolic dynamic. In the course of history there have been various forms of incarnation of this devotion. That of Marguerite Marie-Alacoque is the most important inculturation of this devotion but not the only one, as we see with Divine Mercy.

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer and Eucharistic Youth Movement) also has its specific path. It is this way that we call today The Way of the Heart: a mission of compassion for the world. It is the foundation of our mission, as the Holy Father said during the 175th anniversary event. It is the compass of our mission and the process of re-creation. That is why it is important to meditate on the following documents, understand their spirit and translate them well.

I count on you to continue and deepen this re-creation process. When there are things that are not clear, don't hesitate to contact me so that we can talk about them, because the texts don't say everything.

I remind you that the meetings on the first Wednesday of the month are compulsory as they help to adjust to the level of the common mission. If you, as director or national coordinator, are unable to participate, we ask you to send a delegate from your team.

HOW TO TAKE PART TO THE POPE'S WORLDWIDE PRAYER NETWORK

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, offers two ways to participate: one “open” form and another form of “membership and involvement,” with the Eucharist as the model of offering and readiness, to live as Jesus did.

1. The open form of participation, accessible to anyone who has been baptized, involves including the Pope’s Prayer Intentions in one’s daily prayers. This may be done when celebrating the Eucharist. Those who participate in this manner are especially called to join the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network on the first Friday of each month, to reflect on the intentions of the Holy Father. This day will be considered “The Monthly Day of Prayer for the Pope’s Intentions.” This form of participation can be adopted spontaneously by people, groups or movements.

2. The form of membership and involvement requires a more active involvement and a relationship must be established with the relevant national or regional center of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, commonly called the National Office. This relationship may involve participating in the activities promoted by the National Office (training initiatives, national gatherings, days of prayer, etc.), and keeping up to date through social networks. This membership and involvement can take place on a personal level or with a group or community. It may also take the form of a personal consecration.

2.1. At a personal level, the form of membership and involvement involves practicing three daily moments of prayer to the Lord Jesus: in the morning, with the prayer of offering; during the day, and at night, any of which may be carried out when celebrating the Eucharist. The essential idea is, through the daily routine of prayer, to grow in intimate friendship with the Lord and find one’s own way to collaborate in the mission of the Church, within the framework of the challenges identified by the Prayer Intentions entrusted to us by the Pope. This prayer and apostolic readiness are always in union with Mary, the Queen of the Apostles.

2.2. At a group or community level, the form of membership and involvement can be realized through one of the following options:

- Parishes, Christian communities, and other groups may show their involvement to the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network when they get together specifically to pray for the Pope’s intentions and, particularly when they dedicate the first Friday of the month for this purpose. They will inform the National Office of their involvement to integrate them truly and consciously with the network.

3

- Groups in the Apostleship of Prayer, who have been raised in our spiritual tradition and are present in parishes, are another form of membership and involvement at a community level in the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network. They have a diocesan structure and follow their own internal educational and procedural rules. They can use these guidelines if they find them helpful to organize themselves, and they are invited to become part of the process of “Re-creation”, especially through the Way of the Heart. They are accompanied in this process of recreation, respecting their own rhythms and characteristics. When these groups have integrated this process, they can ask the national team to recognize them as Prayer Network Communities.

- Communities of the Pope’s Prayer Network founded in parishes, schools, homes and other places for this purpose. Not only do these communities pray and adopt an internal attitude of readiness to collaborate with the mission of the Church, but they act, searching for ways to put themselves at the service of humanity’s challenges and of needs of the Church. Those who are part of these communities involve themselves, individually or as a group, by living their lives according to the spirituality of the Heart of Jesus, as it is articulated in The Way of the Heart. Furthermore, they will support our youth branch, the Eucharistic Youth Movement, wherever it exists, or they will engage in the pastoral care of young people (parishes, schools, etc.). See document "Clues to understand the Communities of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network".

- Eucharistic Youth Movement teams or centers that belong to the youth Branch of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network up to 25 years. Organization and dynamics are according to the international manual and the national documents and can be adjusted to each place or region. In some countries the EYM has its own organization and national team.

Generally, the groups that are willing to participate in the PWPN, in any of these previous ways, should contact the National Team. The main motivation for the community participation is to grow in availability to the mission of compassion of Christ for the world, to pray and to mobilize for the challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church that are expressed in the Pope’s prayer intentions each month. The community commit themselves to live The Way of the Heart which helps to enter the mission of compassion for the world, to be close to the Heart of Jesus and to cooperate with EYM.

4

The personal consecration, or “covenant” with Jesus, is for those who experience a call to live in close union with the Heart of Jesus and in this sense wish to formalize their personal devotion, commitment, and service. Those who consecrate themselves become “apostles of prayer,” and through it they commit themselves to be open and ready to serve the communities of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer and Eucharistic Youth Movement), in the mission of the local Church. Consecration, or covenant with Jesus, is made following the guidelines of the National Office and in coordination with the International Office. See document "Personal Covenant with Jesus – Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus".

THE WAY OF THE HEART

It is the formation program of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network. It is a program which draws our heart to be nearer to the Heart of Jesus, to align our hearts with His heart’s sentiments, desires and yearnings.

It invites us to unite ourselves to the mission which Jesus received from the Father. Being friends of Jesus, deeply united to Him, perceiving His joys and sufferings for the world, the program leads us to commit ourselves with Him to take up the challenges that confront humanity and the mission of the Church. Every month the Pope articulates these challenges through his intentions, and his intentions help us to understand the mission of Christ in our day.

The Way of the Heart helps us, then, to recognize the challenges of the world with the eyes of Jesus, to mobilize us each month, docile to the Holy Spirit, for prayer and service. It is thus that the program transforms us daily and deeper into praying-apostles and disciple-missionaries, for a mission of compassion for the world.

It is the compass of our mission.

EYM INTERNATIONAL MANUAL

The Eucharistic Youth Movement is the youth section of the of the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network. It finds its strength in the spiritual Treasure of the Apostolate of Prayer and presents itself today, in the light of the Spiritual Exercises, as an itinerary that we call the Way of the Heart.

This spiritual proposal follows the dynamic of the disciples of Emmaus and is presented with a pedagogy adapted to the EYM in three pillars: Gospel, Eucharist, Mission.

This document presents the common foundation for EYM, although there are different styles between countries. This document is available in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

7

PERSONAL COVENANT WITH JESUS Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, is understood in view of a greater apostolic availability.

A personal relationship with Jesus and closeness to His Heart help us to notice and discern his joys and sufferings for the world, and thus hopefully become available at the service of his mission of compassion. In this sense, we understand the Personal Covenant with Jesus, or Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, as a commitment to His mission. This means that the person who makes this commitment becomes available to support the mission of the Pope’s Prayer Network in their country and respond to its call.

In this document you will find some guidelines for the celebration of the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.

CLUES to understand the COMMUNITIES OF THE POPE’S WORLDWIDE PRAYER NETWORK (PWPN)

Did you know that the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network has several forms of participation?

The main motivation for the community participation is to create and live in a community and grow in availability to the mission of compassion of Christ for the world, to pray and to mobilize for the challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church that are expressed in the Pope’s prayer intentions each month. This document proposes general guidelines for understanding this community participation in its various forms, groups of the Apostleship of Prayer, EYM centers, parishes and churches, and especially for starting the Communities of the Prayer Network.

What you can do

- Promote “The Pope Video” that each month propose the challenges that confront humanity and the mission of the Chu rch. It gives us orientations for our life and the mission. It is a key for the mission.

- Promote and collaborate with associations and institutions that work on this challenge (See the documents “A Pathway with Jesus in Apostolic Readiness” and NEWS 2):

“The Pope’s Intentions are orientations for our prayer, our life and our mission. They are in the first place challenges for our personal lives, as we are called to be consistent with what we pray for. They are at the same time invitations to approach during that month other people or institutions that work for the issue we pray for, be they Church institutions or not, establishing a partnership in favor of what concerns us both.” This is a very important point for the re- creation.

- Communicate: Check on how and to whom the Pope’s Intentions are distributed and on who receives them (some receive it by WhatsApp).

- Develop networks for sharing the Pope Video via WhatsApp.

- Send each year, to all the bishops of your country, the Pope's intentions in local languages and in one of the five official languages.

- Make the diocesan communication services aware of the Pope's Video.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SPREAD OUR COMMON PROJECTS

The Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network is at the service of the local Church (p. 13 "Directives for National Teams").

It helps to revitalize the spiritual and missionary sense of groups or parish communities, e.g. by organizing courses and conferences, days of reflection and spiritual retreats (See document "The Way of the Heart") on the spirituality of the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network (See the series of books "The Way of the Heart" and its official website); radio or television programs; articles and publications in general.

PROTOCOL FOR THE NATIONAL TEAM

The long spiritual process of recreating the Apostleship of Prayer as the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network began almost ten years ago. It is a process that does not depend on our own strength or ability, but on our availability to the Spirit of the Lord, since it is He who accompanies us.

Apostolic or missionary prayer is prayer that disposes us for Christ's mission in our daily lives. Through the prayer of offering we make ourselves available for his mission. This attitude of inner readiness for mission opens our hearts and makes us docile to the Spirit of the Lord.

What Father Henri Ramière SJ called "prayer and zeal" (in the sense of care, diligence, commitment) for the Kingdom of Christ, today we call "prayer and action," since true prayer disposes us to action, opens us to our neighbour and to the world.

Each Director and Coordinator, therefore, should consider his or her mission as part of a team, focusing on structuring a heterogeneous team, made up of men and women, lay and religious, at different stages of life. This way of proceeding facilitates and enriches the Mission, and helps everyone to be more docile to the Holy Spirit.

It is important to think about which figures are needed in each national team to carry out the mission, and it is also important for the Director and Coordinator to consider their own local reality, to identify other important responsibilities in their team. There are some figures that must be present in all national teams, and others that will be required by local conditions.

WHERE TO START? THE 5-STEP PROTOCOL

STEP 1: INITIAL DIAGNOSIS

The Director or Coordinator examines the reality in which his or her mission fits, describes his or her analysis of the "CONTEXT," along with the resources, the problem areas present, and the areas still to be built from scratch. He or she describes the work already done, the attempts at resolution already undertaken by the previous Director or Coordinator, pointing out the good practices and the practices that did not work.

It will be useful to refer to these points in the diagnosis:

- Cultural, social and ecclesial context;

- Local history of the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer and EYM);

14

- Characteristics of the Apostleship of Prayer groups;

- Status of the Recreation process;

- Style and characteristics of the EYM (where present);

- Statistics: members of the Apostleship of Prayer and EYM groups, Prayer Network communities (where present), digital media, social networks, presence of magazines and publications;

- Aspects to be strengthened.

STEP 2: DRAFT PROJECT

The Director/Coordinator draws up a DRAFT PROJECT, starting by reflecting on what the short-, medium- and long-term objectives might be to meet the needs that emerged from his or her diagnosis. He or she clarifies what the priority and secondary objectives are. This project will have to be clarified and deepened with the team.

STEP 3: CREATE A TEAM

It is essential to create a team, formed in the spirit of the Prayer Network, with women and men with different vocations and life states. The national team must be a true apostolic team that discerns, prays and celebrates together, where friendship and communion are fostered. It is not enough to have only employees or people who carry out the orders of a leader: we are all, in our different responsibilities, at the service of Christ's mission. It is He who brings us together in this mission. It is important to regularly pray and celebrate mass together and, in addition to business meetings, to have free time together, meals, coffee breaks etc.

Friendship in the Lord is a source of apostolic fruitfulness. Friendship in the Lord cannot be imposed, but it can be fostered. Praying together, contemplating the Gospel, promoting times of spiritual conversation, to listen to how the Lord is present in our life and mission, is essential. Shared spiritual experience, when Christ is at the center of our mission, fosters friendship in the Lord.

This team must be a team of prayer and discernment to help the director or coordinator make the right decisions for the mission. All decisions must be made within this team, following a common discernment process.

APPOINTMENT OF DELEGATES

Each Director/Coordinator may refer to the table below.

15

The first part is devoted to the figures that must always be present in each team. The second is devoted to the figures specific to the local situation, identified on the basis of the context described in the previous steps.

Remember the importance of surrounding oneself with figures who represent as much as possible the heterogeneity of the Mission! The Spirit speaks to priests, sisters, lay people, women, men, the elderly, young people, couples, etc.

DELEGATES REQUIRED FOR EACH NATIONAL TEAM

DELEGATE FOR PRAYER

He or she is the first figure needed. He or she is in charge of all prayer activities, especially Click To Pray.

DELEGATE FOR FORMATION

He or she is in charge of training at different levels, with special attention to the Way of the Heart.

COMUNICATION DELEGATE He or she is in charge of communication aspects. In particular, he or she disseminates the Pope Video and, if it is not in the local language, initiates the process of translation.

DELEGATE FOR SAFEGUARDING AND PROTECTION OF MINORS AND VULNERABLE ADULTS POLICY

FUNDRAISING DELEGATE

This role is present in the realities with EYM. Its tasks are described in the Policy and Safeguarding manual.

It is a transversal figure, who collaborates with all the others to support the whole mission of the local network, or individual areas.

OTHER FIGURES REQUIRED BY YOUR MISSION

Notice: If you have a board with a civil structure, send us the names, contact details and how roles and responsibilities are structured!

16

STEP 4: STRATEGIC PLAN

It is up to the national team to develop a strategic plan to advance the process of recreating this Pontifical Work in your country or region. The team will do this by taking into consideration the appropriate diagnoses of the local reality. It is essential to consider socio-cultural, religious and pastoral aspects of the reality for good planning. For this diagnostic work, it is useful to consult the diagnoses carried out by others, especially ecclesiastical institutions. Strategic planning will also include periodic evaluations of the recreation process.

STEP 5: WE ACCOMPANY YOU ON YOUR MISSION!

Directors/Coordinators and Delegates can refer to the international team to discuss their mission. The more communication there is, the easier the processes will run.

Frequent updates among team members on the progress of the mission will enable support to be given, if needed, but also to share the good practices and successes of the Prayer Network with the rest of the Network!

Each year, in January, send the mission report to the International Director and the Jesuit Provincial of your country or region, as this Work is entrusted to the Society of Jesus.

It will also be important to keep in touch with the International Director and the Continental Coordinator and to get to know the international team well in order to contact the different leaders as needed 1:

18

TIMING PROTOCOL

STEPS 1-2 Diagnosis and Project 3 to 9 months from the beginning of the mission.

STEP 3 Create the team and appoint the delegates between 9 and 18 months after the start of the mission.

STEP 4 Submit the strategic plan to the international office within 12 to 24 months.

STEP 5 In January each year, send the mission report to the International Director and Jesuit Provincial.

These deadlines are indicative and depend on the concrete reality of the mission. Likewise, the structuring of the team could take more or less time, and even be ongoing during the first phase of the mandate. Among the main variables that could influence structuring could be: the number of members participating in the Work, at individual and community level; the territorial extension it covers; the degree of progress of the Recreation process.

The strategic plan may also undergo adjustments and/or modifications according to changing realities. This is why it is so important to review and report annually, and also to take time to discuss the progress of the mission at least once a year with the International Director and the Continental Coordinator.
