Many of us will take advantage of these days off to carry out DIY jobs around the house. One of the most popular DIY activities over long weekends is decorating, so in this issue we bring you information and advice on colour schemes for your home.

60 Minutes of Fame Local company Drapemasters Interior Furnishers, joined the ranks of TV celebrity designers recently when they were invited to help out with a 60 Minute Makeover for the popular ITV show.

“The house is in Enfield, EN2 and was nominated by the owners cousin for the makeover. The owners have always helped out within their community and her cousin along with others felt they were very deserving of a special house makeover,” Julia Sondack from Drapemasters told EN Magazine. “But I do not want to give to much away.”

“It was a real pleasure for us to work alongside well known TV celebrities to carry out a fantastic makeover. Some absolutely stunning fabrics have been used and made up beautifully creating an absolutely stunning overall effect. All the curtains, blinds and cushions for the show have been donated, supplied and fitted by Drapemasters.” Julia continued. “Filming took a full day but the actual time carrying out the makeover and putting all furnishings in the house is exactly 60mins. It’s a major feat in organisation but incredibly good fun to take part in. Watch out for Lee in white overalls fitting our products at the windows!” The programme goes to air on Friday 6th May at 2pm on ITV1 where the full story including before and after shots will be revealed.

CBeebies presenter to start Easter Egg Hunt Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice will host its fourth annual Easter Egg Hunt at Capel Manor Gardens, Enfield, featuring a variety of family activities on Saturday 23 April 2011 from 12 noon to 3pm. This year Noah’s Ark is delighted to announce that CBeebies presenter and ‘Big Box of Bananas’ star Andy Day and his comedy partner Mike James will be attending the event. Andy will be joining in all the fun including starting the ‘bunny hop’ and ‘egg ‘n spoon’ races; Andy and Mike will also be taking part in story telling, putting their own unique twist on some traditional Easter tales and meeting and greeting the children during the afternoon. “I am so ‘eggstremely’ excited about Noah’s Ark Easter Hunt, it is going to be so much fun! I’m really looking forward to meeting you all, telling you some stories and hunting for the chocolate eggs. It’s going

to be an ‘eggcellent’ day out so see you there!” said Andy. The Noah’s Ark Easter Egg Hunt event will begin at 12noon. Andy will start the ‘bunny hop’ at 2.00pm. There will be two Story telling sessions with Andy and Mike for the younger children which will take place at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Capel Manor Gardens will be open from 10.00 am to 5.30 pm, so why not make a full day of it.

‘Roman Enfield - from Settlement to London Suburb’ is the first exhibition in the new Enfield Museum in the Dugdale Centre in Thomas Hardy House on London Road, Enfield Town.

This major exhibition is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. It is a London regional project called ‘London World City’ featuring ‘Stories of the World’ and is funded by the Museums Libraries and Archives Council with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). Telling the story of the development of the Roman settlement in Bush Hill Park, the exhibition shows what it looked like and why it was there. Lives of the people at that time are described through hundreds of objects excavated in Enfield and many items on loan from the Museum of London. Museum manager, Val Munday, who has led this project for the last 18 months, said, “A reconstructed room from the villa in Enfield and another from one of the more modest homes are fascinating examples of Roman life in Enfield. Enthusiastic local young people have been working with our museum staff to reveal a hidden part of Enfield’s past.”

April 2011.indd 1

Cllr Bambos Charalambous, 6/4/11 member 10:48:02 cabinet for leisure and young people, said, “This is a community triumph. Over 20 young people have made their special contributions to the project. Two of them volunteered to help with research and writing exhibition text as part of a national volunteer scheme. Ten young offenders created a series of mosaics

in typical Roman style, while others worked on a film to accompany the exhibition.” The final film has a number of three minute sections showcasing chosen Roman topics using different cinematic techniques and styles with an original soundtrack written by the young people. Through their research and interests the young people directly influenced the themes within the exhibition. This free exhibition runs from Mondays – Fridays 11am – 4pm and ends on 2nd May. School sessions will be held on 24th and 31st March and 7th April. For more details call: 020 8379 8354 or email: enfield. museumservice@enfield.gov.uk There will also be family history sessions on 13, 14, 15 April and then 20 and 21 April. Local News and Events In these times of austerity and cuts, with the national media full of stories of disasters and wars is there much to laugh about? But laughter could be the answer to surviving the current times. Laughter, it has been argued by some medical practitioners, can have healing and uplifting affects for the ill and depressed. Laughing as well as making you smile and feel happy causes the body to: • Take in more oxygen helping to keep you healthy by nourishing the cells • Increase circulation – giving us rosy cheeks and making us look younger!

Put Some Laughter In Your Life • Gives the tummy an abdominal workout and helps digestion • Stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol are reduced so we feel more relaxed • Happy hormones, endorphins are released removing the negative effects of stress • Endorphins (meaning self

made morphine) can act as a pain killer and laughter can be used as a pain management tool  â€˘Â Laughter gives a sense of lightness and wellbeing • Help with depression and anxiety by boosting the production of seratonin (a natural antidepressant)

EN Magazine sent me along to the Laughter Yoga Group in Potters Bar to find out more.  Laughter Yoga is a combination of laughter exercises, with yogic breathing (pranayama), so that you increase the amount of oxygen in your body whilst being playful resulting in you feeling more healthy, energised and alive. This actually changes the physiology of your body so that you start to feel happier. Laughter Yoga is generally done in groups – although it can be practiced alone.  When you make eye contact with someone and you are both willing to laugh, the laughter is multiplied.  Laughter Yoga started in a park in Mumbai in 1995 with just 5 participants, and now there are over 6,000 laughter clubs in 60 different countries – showing the willingness of the world to laugh together. Upon arrival at the Wyllyott’s Centre in Potters bar where the group meet I was greeted by Heike who runs the session. As this was the first time I had done something like this, I M N was apprehensive and nervous as to what wasNinvolved. P Heike quickly put me at ease outlining what would happen. One of my concerns was that I would not find something funny so how was I going to laugh?

Local News and Events “We do say that you can “Fake it, fake it till you make it” because the body doesn’t know the difference between fake and genuine laughter, as long as you are willing to laugh you will experience the same health benefits and the laughter will become genuine,” Heike told me. Then the class was under way a group of 6 people including myself acting out experiences, such as passing a mobile phone for someone to listen to and pretend they are laughing at a funny story, and passing different laughs to someone in the room, from a deep belly ho ho ho to a light-hearted he he he. Before long the feeling of foolishness and false laughter

was replaced by real laughter and cohesion within the group that led to me leave with a smile on my face and a better outlook to the day. Potters Bar Laughter Club meet on Monday mornings from 10am to 11am at the Wyllyott’s Centre Potters Bar and costs just £5 to put a smile on your face and an laugh in your belly. 1st May is world laughter day. All around the world people will be meeting to laugh at 12noon local time. Potters Bar Laughter Club will be joining in, holding a group laugh in Oakmere Park. For more information call Heike on 07533 347 299

On Yer Bike! On the 15th of May North London Hospice’s sponsored bike ride takes place. This year the event welcomes families as well as dedicated solo cyclists to join in to raise money for patient care.

Cyclists taking the 40-mile challenge will hit the road at 9am from Queenswood School and those who want to try the 20 mile route will join them an hour later from the same venue. Both will take a circular route round the leafy lanes of Hertfordshire ending up back at the school for well-earned refreshments. Entry is £15 for adults and £5 for children and they are

offering a special family rate of £35 for two adults and up to three children under 16. ‘We want to make this year’s bike ride a real success by attracting all members of the community to a great event’, says Fundraising Manager Judi Guy. North London Hospice provides specialist care for 1300 patients and their families living with a lifelimiting illness in the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. They are only partially funded by the NHS and rely on donations from the community to fund the care for 3 out of every 4 patients. On 25th March, poets from Enfield and from overseas gathered in the Mayor’s Parlour to find out who had won the first Enfield Mayor’s Poetry Competition. From an exceptionally strong field of over 600 entries from Enfield and around the world the winner of the top prize of £500 was Christopher North for his poem ‘Photographer’ – a stark, strong piece about photo journalism, almost developing a picture as the poem progresses. Nicholas McKinnon was the winner of the special Enfield Prize for his two poems ‘Library Green’ and ‘Freezywater’.

In fact the winner, Christopher North, flew in from Spain to receive his prize. Mayor, Cllr Jayne Buckland, presented all the prizes and thanked the sponsors, Anthony Fisher of Fisher Research and LondonWaste Eco Park. She said, “This competition has been a great success and it is something that we shall repeat next year. It has raised £1500 for the Mayor’s Charity fund and given a boost to our local poets as well as going global. It has also given a great deal of pleasure to people who entered.”

Mario Petrucci who judged the competition said, “It is remarkable that in its first year the competition attracted 612 entries from all over Britain, with 70 from Enfield and many others Mayor, Cllr Jayne Buckland with judge Mario Petrucci, far left, and from Spain, Greece, Holland, Australia, USA and South India. winners of the poetry competition

The left kerb frames. Catch the trees though and the lamppost with the blast hole.

Put the boy left, just off foreground – has to be seen first, The kerb directs – his face, that thigh. Then to the cart, The bent up bicycle wheel, The other spokes splayed out. Need those houses – essential horizon. Mount the lens higher, Want some depth of fields: F22 – 1/30th sec 40mm The one with the hipped roof first. Could be Hemel Hempstead, I need that.

The eye goes along the other houses, Sees the garden trees, then tracks back, sees the tank. Then the soldier, his helmet, the gun turret. He’s looking right at you. What will the eye do then? Go back to the boy? No, caught by another body. It’s the jeep with the treaded spare tyre. Can’t see a face. So back to the cart, the boy, the bare thigh – He could be asleep. Then maybe the fallen leaves, Some muddied like just after rain. I have lost my shot. Could crop out the stretcher.

Delight your kitchen with a trip to Papylon On the 9th of April, Martha Ferguson, opened the doors to her new kitchenware shop, Papylon in Whinchmore Hill. Martha is both passionate about her new business and the area that she has lived in all her life. “Papylon aims to fill a gap in the local market, by supplying people with the things that they need in the kitchen,” said Martha. “Over the last few years there has been an explosion of TV cookery programmes, with top chefs sharing tips on not just creating a meal but a gastronomic experience. Just serving food up on a plate is no longer the norm. Shows like MasterChef and Saturday Kitchen stress the need for creative presentation of food and that is where Papylon aims to help. We are going to stock a comprehensive range of cook and kitchenware that is not only practical but stylish.” From baking dishes to pastry cutters from wine glasses to mugs Papylon creates an excitement with its products that makes you want to cook. “But I want to be more than just a another highstreet shop added Martha “Papylon was born through my desire and need to make a difference to my local community in Winchmore Hill. wealth of history, there is huge potential to make Winchmore Hill a jewel in London’s crown.” “Having spent a large part of my childhood being dragged around Muswell Hill and Hampstead as a result of my mother’s shopping addiction I soon became accustomed to ‘villages’ within a city and all the fabulous things that come with these. Independent boutiques, lovely little tea shops and delicious delis are just a few of the things that make these urban ‘villages’ unique and differentiate them from the monotonous high street. This is where Papylon comes to life and where I hope it will flourish.” “The streets of Winchmore Hill and Enfield are lined with beautiful period properties and the majority of these come with residents whom value their history and appearance.” “Papylon’s aim is therefore to provide unique kitchen and homeware products which have both a high aesthetic appeal and quality finish and which have been individually selected with the properties and residents of Winchmore Hill and Enfield in mind.”

“I want Papylon to help make Winchmore Hill more of a shopping destination and encourage people to support the community by spending their money locally. I hope that my shop will drive footfall in the area and this in turn will boost sales for the other retailers.” “I strongly believe that there are many shared values between those living in and around Winchmore Hill and one of these is the desire to not only maintain but also improve our local area. By introducing new shops and businesses of the right genre, then hopefully we will be on the right track to achieve this.”

Fighting To Save Free Parking more than 100 businesses is asking Hertsmere Council to reconsider the proposed change to parking charges in Potters Bar. Currently people can park for free for up to 1 hour along the High Street and Darkes Lane. The Council has proposed that this will change to 30 minutes free and then 20p for up to an hour.

“We appreciate that Councils are having tough times and need to find ways to raise money, but we feel that this decision will have a negative impact on the local businesses serving the local community in Potters Bar,” said Joy Prince. “Businesses are already struggling to survive and this is noticeable by the number of shops and business premises available to let in Potters Bar. We already have to compete with the likes of Tesco and shopping centres like London Colney that offer free parking. If the 1 hour free parking is taken away from our local shopping areas we believe that more shops and business will be forced to close. We have been astounded by the support from local residents who have been fully behind our campaign wanting to see the shops in Potters Bar

“We have made suggestions to the Council as to how we feel that they could raise additional revenue from parking in the area,” added Chris Piercey. “However the aim of our campaign and the petition is to save the free one hour parking so that we can continue to support and benefit the local community.”

Local News and Events don’t be a wet fish but don’t try to crush their hand either! Ask if it’s ok to take notes. I have never heard of an interviewer saying ‘no’! Interviewers want to meet confident, articulate candidates who can multi-task remember.

In this, the third and final article by The Recruitment Guy, he looks at the interview process . Most candidates ‘rock up’ to an interview; perform badly and wonder why they don’t get the job. In my experience, the best candidate often does not get the job, it is the candidate that has better communication skills and has prepared properly will invariably do better. It does not matter whether you are attending a one to one interview at an employers premises, a group candidate assessment or a telephone interview; do your home work! Use the internet to research the company, their competitors, the market they operate in and their values.

Discover what the company does exactly, who do they do it for, how long have they been established. Find out who are the senior managers. Ask the recruiter (if via an agency) what they know about the company? Dress smartly and appropriately. Suit, jacket & trousers, skirt & blouse, shiny shoes, clean tidy hair, not too much make up, avoid aftershave or heavy perfume. Unless you’re applying for a creative role; lads, don’t wear earrings. Check out how to get to the company. If using your car; take rush hour traffic into account and do a trial run before the day of the interview. If using public transport; get there early. Don’t risk it. Think about your handshake;

Have a fresh hardback book and a pen that hasn’t been chewed with a list of your questions to hand. Remember, the interview process is a two way street these days! You are interviewing the prospective employer as much as they are interviewing you and they will expect you to be a good communicator. Create a list of questions; but not covering what you should already know. Ask for more information about the job, the prospects, training, IT systems, market share, how technology has impacted the company and plans for the future. Find out when are the busy times, who are their biggest customers & main competitors. How many staff do they employ and what are their plans for the future. Ask them to expand upon the job description & responsibilities and find out the 3 most important things that need to be addressed immediately. If it’s a senior or management role find out about the staff you’d be expected to look after & any ‘problems’. Don’t forget to ask what the company’s values are and importantly what kind of person they are really looking for to suit this role. Please, don’t talk about holidays at this stage and certainly not sick pay! If you think that this is the job for you, then say so. Maybe ask for a tour of the company premises. Remember, if the employer has the choice of two candidates; he’ll always chose the candidate who he believes, rightly or wrongly, is more interested in the role. Also, think about the questions that you will be

asked. Prepare your answers in advance; maybe role-play the interview with a friend or relative. You are bound to be asked why you want this job, why you think that you are suitable, your reason for leaving your recent employer, how did you deal with specific problems in your last role, specifically potential solutions, options you chose, outcomes and what you learnt from the experience If you are being interviewed by phone, then make sure that you will not be disturbed. Turn off all other phones, the TV and the radio. Make sure that you have all your questions ready and plenty of paper to take notes. A glass of water is always useful, just in case you get a dry throat! But please don’t chew gum or smoke if you’re being interviewed by phone. Just because you have finished the interview; doesn’t mean that the interview process is over! If you are working with an agency; contact the agency immediately and give them some feedback. They can then pass on your interest to their client. If you feel so inclined; and I suggest that you do, write or email your interest in the position to the employer. Don’t sound desperate but DO sound enthusiastic. Focus on expanding upon how you can add value to the employers company. Please, please remember to use spell check. Good luck, and don’t forget to turn your phone off! Missed the previous articles on Finding Your Dream Job and C.V.’s and applications then visit www.enmagazine.co.uk to view the February 2011 issue. To Rent or Not to Rent? The pressures on buying a property have dramatically increased over the last two years. Although mortgage rates have been at a historically low point for a long period, the banking crisis has meant that banks and building societies have been reluctant to lend money in the current climate. This situation has lead to an increase in the need for rental properties and one company that has been helping to sustain this demand is Martin & Co in Enfield Town. Since opening the doors to their High Street Offices two years ago in 2009 Yashwant & Kirti, have been successfully matching tenants to properties. They have provided professional expertise whether its Let only, Rent collection or Fully managed. The team at Martin & Co Enfield offer a personal service to all its clients whether Tenant or Landlord. The English Housing Survey from Communities and Local Government shows that the number of households renting privately has gone up by one million in the last five years. In 2005-06, there were 2.4 million

private rental households, which rose to 3.4 million in 2009-10. The private rented sector now accounts for 15.6% of all households in England up from 14.2% in 2009-09 and 11.7% in 2005-06. Online property website Rightmove.co.uk’s research show’s that this cold be a boom period for landlords with prices expected to go up. Their report measures the % of home-movers who are expecting rental prices to go up over the next year nationally. For landlords in London the news is even better, where the percentage is above the national average in terms of the percentage of people expecting prices to go up. So a good time for a landlord to be bringing a property to market. Martin & Co in Enfield Town, are part of the National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS), which offers peace of mind to Landlord and Tenants alike, in knowing that they are dealing with a firm which, “agrees to meet defined standard of customer service, together with having in place the necessary

Easter Cakes

Easter Baking Treats

When people think of foods at Easter they generally think of chocolate eggs and with Easter only a few weeks away the shelves of shops are already crowded with Easter eggs. However, there are other traditional foods associated with the Easter festivities that you could make yourself. EN Magazine spoke to local flour mill, Wright’s at Ponders End Mills, who have a vast selection of packet bread and cake mixes, ideal for producing the perfect edible accompaniment for Easter Celebrations.

In the 16th century, Roman Catholicism was banned in England, but the popularity of Hot Cross buns continued. Queen Elizabeth I passed a law banning the consumption of Hot Cross Buns except during festivals such as Easter, Christmas and funerals.

Hot Cross Buns

Hot Cross Bun Recipe: Dough 500g Wrights Premium White bread mix OR Wholemeal bread mix 500g Wright’s Ciabatta Bread Mix 115g Fat 28g Milk Powder 100g Sugar 225g Mixed Fruit 2 Tablespoons Mixed Spice 1 size 4 egg 520ml Warm Water Cross Mix 100g Self Raising Flour - mixed to a smooth paste with 150ml of cold water for crosses. Glaze 50g Caster Sugar dissolved in 100ml Boiling Water For Glaze

In 1361, a monk named Father Thomas Rockcliffe began a tradition of giving Hot Cross Buns to the poor of St Albans on Good Friday. In years that followed, many customs, traditions, superstitions and claims of healing and protection from evil were associated with the buns.

Across the top of a hot cross bun is a symbol that some think is the sign of the crucifix. This is possibly a modern interpretation, as small loaves bearing a cross, were eaten by the Saxons. In this context the cross symbolises the four quarters of the moon.

Method: This recipe makes 30 hot cross buns. A smaller quantity of buns can be made by using half a pack of each mix and half the quantity of other ingredients. Add the fat, sugar, milk powder, mixed spice and egg to the bread mixes. Using 520ml of warm water

14

make up the dough following the instructions on the pack. Add the mixed fruit and blend through the dough. Divide the dough into 30 pieces and mould into balls. Rest for 10 minutes. Remould the pieces and place on a greased baking trays ensuring they are in straight lines to make the piping of the crosses easier. Number on each tray depends on size of tray. Prove in a warm place for 3540 minutes or until doubled in size. Using a piping bag fitted with a fine nozzle (1-1.5mm) pipe crosses carefully on the proved buns. Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C (425°F) gas mark 7 for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and brush immediately with sugar solution to give glaze.

Simnel Cake

Similar in taste to a Christmas Cake, Simnel Cake is a rich fruit cake with a layer of sweet almond-scented marzipan baked running through the centre of it. It is then topped with another layer of marzipan and then eleven small balls of marzipan are placed in a circle on top. The eleven balls represent the eleven true Disciples of Christ. Judas is, of course, notably absent. There is a tradition which states that the cake was given when people went “Mothering”.

This was not initially an early reference to Mother’s Day, which occurs a few weeks before Easter in the UK, but a time when people would visit their “Mother” church, the largest in the parish. Families would meet up at this larger place of worship and exchange gifts or share food. As time went by, and the emphasis was placed on more secular forms of the custom, the occasion was changed more literally – to visiting the mother of the family. Simnel Cake Recipe Wright’s Carrot Cake Mix 500g Mixed Dried Fruit 350g Marzipan 150g Ground Almonds 100g Zest & juice of two oranges Decoration Apricot Jam 1-2 tbsp Marzipan 450g Fresh Flowers & Ribbon Cake Board 9-10” Round Method (Makes 1 unit – 12 portions) Add the juice and zest of the two oranges to the mixed fruit and leave to soak for 1 hour. Place the cake mix, ground almonds, water and oil into a bowl. Mix together to form a smooth batter. Add the fruit mixture and mix well. Pour half of the cake batter into a deep round pre-lined 19cm (7½ inches) baking tin. Roll out 150g of the marzipan into a 18cm (7 inches) round and place on top of the batter in the baking tin.

Easter Cakes Bake in a preheated oven 180°C (360°F), Gas Mark 5 for 20-25 minutes until firm to the touch.

Allow to cool completely before decorating. Pour over the remaining cake batter.

Easter Cup Cakes

Smooth over Thee cake batter making a slight dip in the middle of the cake. (This will help produce a flatter cake) Bake in the lower half of a preheated oven 160°C (320°F) gas mark 3-4 for approximately 90 minutes.

What could be better than chocolate cup cakes with Mini Eggs, a real favourite nesting nicely on these chocolate cupcakes - foiled eggs, mini cream eggs or Maltesers also work well:

Allow the cake to cool before removing from the tin and place in the centre of the cake board.

Easter Cup Cakes Recipe Wright’s Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix 500g Water 200ml Vegetable Oil 60ml

Brush the top of the cake with warm apricot jam. Weigh out 150g of the marzipan and roll out a circle to 19cm (7 ½ inches). Place the circle of marzipan on top of the jam. Divide the remaining marzipan in half, using one half to form 11 small balls and set round the edge using water. Place under a preheated grill to brown slightly. Divide the remaining piece of marzipan into 2 and roll each one into a long rope about 23cm (9 inches) long and twist round each other. Place the twisted marzipan around the bottom of the cake.

Topping Dark Chocolate (70% cocoa solids) 200g Unsalted Butter (softened) 250g Icing Sugar 250g Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon

Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water, stirring occasionally. Allow to cool. Meanwhile in a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, icing sugar and vanilla extract together until smooth. Add the melted chocolate and beat until thick and creamy. Pipe each cake with the chocolate icing a place 2-3 mini eggs on each as per illustration.

WIN WIN WIN Wright’s Flour Mills have given us 5 boxes of bread and cake mix products to give away to 5 lucky winners - the boxes will incorporate 2 x 5 x 500g (10 packs) of Wright’s bread mix and 1 x 5 x 500g (5 packs) of Wright’s cake mix. To be in with a chance of winning just tell us where Father Thomas Rockcliffe gave away Hot Cross Buns?

DIY

Easter Devoted to DIY It seems DIY has become an Easter institution alongside eating too much chocolate and big family lunches. Research carried out by B&Q, the UK’s largest home improvement and garden centre retailer, has found that more people will be making a trip to a DIY centre, than taking a trip to the park or seaside at Easter. In fact more of us would rather be sanding, stripping wallpaper and painting than seeing friends this holiday, proving how popular DIY has become.

More than half of people questioned considered Easter the perfect time to start DIY jobs, with seven in 10 believing the long bank holiday weekend is the best time to freshen up the home. Choosing the right colour scheme for your home is

always a challenge, so EN Magazine spoke to the professionals at Crown paints for some inspiration. Crown Paints is the UK and Ireland’s largest independent paint company and colour is at the heart of everything they do. They have over 200 years of knowledge, passion and experience poured in to every can of paint.

Every year, they invite a diverse team of industry professionals together, to form the Crown Colour Panel. From this eclectic and energetic team of colour fanatics influences are born and evolve. These inform the development of the Crown Paints portfolio across professional and DIY markets, for both interior and exterior brands.

The spirit of the 1950’ informs this palette, with sugared pastels to metallic and high gloss finishes. A new generation of 50’s influences inspired by Day, Ercol, Eames and Dior brings a quality to design with a twist of humour to lift the spirits of the nation. The strong blend of bold turquoise and jade, dusky lilac and acidic chartreuse, is balanced by the calming neutral shades of grey and sand, with a flash of sliver, creating a look that can be adapted easily for interiors.

the decades from the 1950s to present day. Davies created the song Waterloo Sunset, and the SouthBank centre is next to Waterloo bridge.

Exhibitions in London With long weekends and school holidays throughout the next few months and over the summer, EN Magazine takes a look at some of the exhibitions and activities available for a day out just a train ride away.

The New Festival of Britain To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, London’s SouthBank Centre is holding a fourmonth festival from April to September. The 1951 Festival took place on the south bank of the Thames, which had been blitzed by bombs in the Second World War. It marked the beginning of the redevelopment of the area, which is now home to the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Hayward Gallery, the Poetry Library, the British Film Institute and the National Theatre. Today,

the SouthBank Centre is the UK’s largest arts centre, and the anniversary will celebrate the best of British culture and creativity.

The Centre’s artistic director Jude Kelly says: ‘The 1951 Festival of Britain was a landmark event visited by millions, and its legacy and influence continues to live on.’

spectators than the grounds can hold. In 1927 queues started outside the ground at 5am and more than 2,000 people were turned away. In 1991, Wimbledon experienced one of the wettest first weeks on record and play took place on middle Sunday for the very first time. The queue stretched for 2.4km (1.5 miles) outside the grounds. A ‘Code of Conduct’ applies

Highlights of the festival include a museum of memorabilia, the first major London exhibition of the work of British artist Tracey Emin, and a Young Pianists Week with a mass event of 100 young players playing dozens of pianos alongside Chinese virtuoso Lang Lang. There will be weekends on various themes throughout the Festival, including a Royal Wedding weekend (29 April–2 May) and a Chorus weekend (13–15 May), which includes a mass performance of choirs from round the UK singing Handel’s Messiah. Ray Davies from the Kinks will curate the Centre’s annual Meltdown Festival this year. Ray Davies’ Meltdown (10–12 and 17–19 June) will celebrate pop music through

The Queue, opening in April, is to be Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum’s latest exhibition, exploring the traditions and history of the Wimbledon queue and offering visitors an insight into the very British queueing experience. Every year for more than a century the Wimbledon tennis championships have attracted more would-be

to the queue, which is kept in check by the Honorary Stewards. The code includes a clear non-reservation policy where people queueing must be present in person and may not place equipment in lieu of themselves. The latest exhibition includes tips for potential queuers and a display of objects collected from queueing over the years. Other highlights in the museum include the 3-D ‘ghost’ of John McEnroe, the Championship Trophies, the 200° Cinema and CentreCourt360, the new viewing experience in Centre Court. Behind-the-scenes tours of the ground are available for groups and individuals. The one-hour tours are led by Blue Badge guides and include views of London from the top of the Aorangi Terrace (known as Henman Hill or Murray Mount), No1 Court, the Millennium Building with the players’ gym and Japanese Zen garden as well as the main press interview room and the BBC TV Studio. A power house for 900 years A new permanent exhibition opens in April at the Tower of London, exploring the building’s remarkable history and its importance as a fortress, a palace, a prison and a base for royal power. Power House will uncover the stories and personalities behind the major organisations of state, who took care of royal business from within the Tower’s walls from 1100 to the present day. Historic British institutions associated with the Tower include the Royal Armouries, the Ordnance Office, the Royal Mint, the Record Office, the Jewel House, the Menagerie and the Royal Observatory. The exhibition will also look at how the Tower of London has served as a royal residence and a state prison. The Royal Armouries’ Head of Creative Programmes Karen Whitting says: ‘The Tower has been home to many important national institutions for over 900 years and was viewed as ©Royal Armouries

a fortress and symbol of England’s might. ‘Close to the seat of royal power at Westminster, the Tower became England’s ultimate Power House. The functions it housed were vital to whether successive monarchs kept or lost control of the kingdom.’ The Royal Armouries has commissioned a threemetre high dragon to stand at the entrance to the exhibition. It will be made up of components from each of the major institutions of state. The design is still being finalised but it is hoped that the artwork will include armour, swords, firearms and cannon representing the Ordnance Office, coins from the Royal Mint, parchments and maps representing the Records Office and Ordnance Survey and its tail will be made of chains recalling how the Tower was a prison. Power House, opening on 2 April, is being organised in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London. The Tower is open 9am– 4.30pm Tue–Sat and 10am– 4.30pm Sun–Mon, admission £18.70 (£16 online), under-16s £10.45 (£9), students and over-60s £15.95 (£13.50), family ticket £51.70 (£44), under-5s free. A glimpse into London’s secret squares The 2011 Open Garden Squares Weekend takes place in London on 11–12 June, when around 200 private squares and other hidden gardens in the capital will be open to the public. This is the 13th year of the event, designed to highlight the important contribution private community gardens and squares make to London’s environment. This June the gardens include one on top of a supermarket, the gardens at Wormwood Scrubs prison and apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. The garden at the Jamyang Buddhist Centre in Kennington, in what was once the exercise yard for prisoners of the Old Kennington Courthouse, will be open on 12 June. Ticket-holders can also visit the garden used for horticultural therapy at Royal Hospital Chelsea. The London Squares Act of 1931 protected 461 London squares and other green enclosures from being built over. Most of the city’s squares are surrounded on four sides by a square or rectangle of roads lined with buildings.

20

However the areas are rarely square. Circles, ovals, octagons, crescents and semicircles are common. Grosvenor Square is oval, Bedford Square is circular and Charterhouse Square is pentagonal. During World War Two, the railings of many squares were taken to be melted down and used for armaments. Tickets that allow entry to all venues over the weekend costs £7.50 if bought in advance and £10 during the weekend. Tickets will also be sold at the Britain and London Visitor Centre on Lower Regent Street, SW1Y 4XT and from all Capital Garden Centres. Tickets will go on sale 5 May. Visits to Wormwood Scrubs and Kensington Palace need to be booked in advance. There will be free downloadable guided cycling and walking tours between the gardens for the weekend.
