As Easter gives many of us an extra few days break, some of us will use this time to carry out home improvements. In this issue we investigate the trends in home colour decoration for 2012.

Have you ever had a boiler breakdown and been left in the cold with no hot water? It happened to EN Magazine. We share our experiences and the solutions that we used to get our house warm again and with hot running water.

After the 29th of February, a few potential brides may have taken advantage of the leap year to propose. EN Magazine takes a look at planning a wedding, with advice from experts on choosing a venue, getting the right dress and a few more top tips.

Making Fund Raising Fun For All Local fund raising group OLSGEIRE kicked off their fundraising events for 2012 with a golf day at Crews Hill Golf Club. The day was a great success with over £6,500 being raised for charity.

“This year we have set ourselves a target to raise of £20,000“ said founding member Noel Sainsbury.

“We appreciate that times are hard for people so we have tried to organize a range of events that people can enjoy participating in to raise money. As well as the golf day, we have held a St Patricks Dance event, with music from Terry and the Bannermen and Enfield based Trainor School of Irish Dancing, in Aid of Richard House Children’s Hospice

& Duck Winchmore Hill, in aid of Kidzone.

and a Family St Patrick luncheon with local Irish Musicians - the Feith An Cheoil School of Irish Music.

The Charity takes its name from OLSG (Our Lady of Mount Carmel & St George) the church that most of the group are attached to and EIRE stands for Enterprising Independent Resourceful Ethical which mirrors the philosophy of the group.

PTA raises £21,000 for School Minibus After five years of fundraising, Chace Community School’s PTA, Chace Association, raised the £21,000 for a much needed new minibus.

And at its quiz night on Saturday 10th March, the keys to the brand new 14 seater were handed over to headteacher, Sue Warrington.

“This mini bus will be well used driving teams to matches, taking groups to their college placements, taking students on Duke of Edinburgh expeditions – it will be used for trips to all sorts of places,” Sue Warrington said. “This is a great achievement demonstrating the PTA’s commitment, dedication and hard work. In 1618 a Royal Charter granted by James 1 established for the benefit of the poor in the Ancient Parish of Enfield a market – today we still have a market in Enfield Town, but it seams that only the rich can afford to park their cars.

Car parking throughout the Borough of Enfield is becoming a contentious issue for traders, the public and Enfield Council. The cost of parking throughout Enfield varies from £1 to £1.20 for an hour in car parks and on street pay and display bays charge 30 pence to 40 pence for 15 minutes. And if you’re a fee minutes over you can be hit with a £110 fine. Enfield Council has also introduced fees to park in Enfield Town on Sunday since January 2012.

To Park or Not to Park?

“Talking to my customers they say how they would like to support the local independents but they are deterred by the cost of parking and the risk of incurring a parking ticket if they a few minutes late returning to their car.”

It is not just the shopkeepers that are complaining about the parking charges.

Mrs J Townsend from West Enfield told EN Magazine.

“I used to like going into Enfield Town and strolling around the shops. I am now 76 and am not as agile on my feet as I used to be. It is to far for me to walk into Enfield so I get friends to drive me into town. However the cost to park for a couple of hours of £2.40 means I have to think seriously if I need to go into Enfield, as it is more than I can really afford and I can not expect my friends to pay. It used to be nice to pop into Enfield and meet friends for a cup of tea and a look around but these days I am doing it less and less.”

But what is the answer?

Well it seams that in Potters Bar the issue of parking has been resolved to the benefit

Joy Prince of LeeJoys School Uniform on the High Street in Potters Bar told EN Magazine, “Last year the local council wanted to introduce paid parking bays on the two main shopping streets through Potters Bar, these had previously been free for an hours parking.

The shopkeepers and local people petitioned the council and a compromise was reached. Today local people can park in the bays for free for half an hour or pay 20 pence for an hour. Even if you are only staying for the half hour you still have to take a ticket, so usage of the bays is controlled and limited.

This way it stops people clogging up the parking allday and means that there is a constant turn over of local people being able to pop into local shops.”

Throughout Enfield Local business are asking to support a similar scheme with free 20minutes parking

to help local people support local business.

One local trader Vic Smith of Vic Smiths Beds has created a non-profit website to help raise awareness and support of the parking issues. On the site, www. enfieldtradealliance.co.uk, they have come up with some inventive ways, in which the council could still raise money from parking, keep congestion down, allow people to park locally and support local business.

The site is asking people to sign up to show their support for the parking issues that they raise. Vic was keen to stress that the site is not for profit and the details collected will not be used for any other purpose than showing the council the support they have for the parking issue and to try and open a proper discussion with the council on this issue.

Stop Moaning it’s your fault anyway or is it?

If the recent studies are to be believed and I think they are, researchers found that out of 3000 people surveyed, 72% (that’s nearly ¾ of them) choose their bed or mattress in less than ten minutes. A third of those questioned had decided in less than five minutes.

New Networking Group Makes Its Mark Mel Tadhunter and Laura Sorrell, two independent local business women who run very different organisations, have united to help other local businesses through their networking group, “WeNetwork”.

“We met when we were both attending the RSA Inspiring Women Programme run by Enterprise Enfield,” said Mel. “The course was great and gave us guidance on setting up our own companies, and it was a chance to meet and learn from other local inspirational business women.”

At the end of the course, Enterprise Enfield offered all attendees the opportunity to set up and run a new networking group. Laura and Mel immediately put forward their proposal on how they

would manage the group and were thrilled when their bid was successful. So, armed with support and funding from the RSA Trust, they launched WeNetwork at a fabulous event in Forty Hall in July 2011.

“Today we have a growing membership and we meet monthly, upstairs at the King’s Head in Winchmore Hill, on the first Wednesday of the month”, Laura told EN Magazine. “We aim to widen our network and actively encourage all business owners, not just women, to come to our meetings”.

Laura continued, “The aim of our meetings is to create an environment where local business people can help each other. At the meetings we have a guest speaker who offers guidance on running a business or advice on social media, for

example. We are always open to our members’ needs and we also hold a trouble-shooting session during the meetings where we raise a problem or challenge faced by a member and open it out to the group to provide a solution”.

As well as regular monthly meetings, the group holds quarterly events where members are offered discounts and priority bookings, this is unique to WeNetwork.

“We feel that this gives our members a valuable opportunity to showcase their products or services and to network with businesses that they may not usually have access to - and it’s all and under one roof. In effect, we run local Expos and we’d encourage all business people to contact us and showcase their company and attend the talks by internationally renowned speakers”, Laura explained.

Local businesses are invited to their next event, “WeEggstravanganza”, on Thursday 29th March at the Dugdale Centre in the heart of Enfield Town from 4:00pm to 9:00pm.

Beauty Shines From Potters Bar Kaylee Muldoon who lives in Potters Bar was recently crowned Miss Spirit of True Beauty Hertfordshire 2012.

Kaylee, who is a single mum and studying Health and Social Care told EN Magazine. “Like many young girls I grow up dreaming of being a model. I did not really have the confidence to put myself on display and it was only with lots of encouragement from friends that I entered the Sprit of True Beauty competition and now I find myself in the finals for Miss Engalnd.”

“Entering the competition has given me a lot more self confidence. I hope that through my success people will see that it is not only celebrities or super models that can look good after childbirth but an ordinary person like me.”

“The competition was a fun day, where I got to meet lots of entrants from all kinds of backgrounds. We were of all shapes and sizes, and the emphasis was having a fun day. There were three rounds to the competition: First Catwalk Round – Jeans and T-Shirt (no logo on T-Shirt, any colour T-Shirt) Second Catwalk Round – Cocktail Dress (any colour/s) Third Catwalk Round – Evening Wear/Prom (Longer Length Dress). It was great fun getting all dressed up.”

“I believe in natural beauty and it was important for me that the competition judged people on their natural looks, not any cosmetic surgery. It may be a cliché but I do believe that everyone is beautiful, its just finding the courage to show it – hopefully my success will encourage others.”

Anyone for Cheese and lots more

On January 17th Tom Merser realised his dream and opened what he hopes will be the first of many of The Truckle Delicatessen in the High Street Potters Bar. EN Magazine met up with Tom, to find out what is the drive behind his new venture.

“The name of the shop comes from a “truckle” of cheese, which refers to a cylindrical wheel of cheese, usually taller than it is wide, and sometimes described as barrel-shaped.” Tom told us.

“After leaving school I started my training as a chef at Auberge du Lac at Brocket Hall. I subsequently moved on to work in other

high profile kitchens, before moving into high end catering at events, such as catering for the celebrities at music festivals – not a greasy burger van in sight for them!”

“Since training as a chef I have developed my love of food and especially my passion for cheese. Before opening the delicatessen I travelled around the country attending various county fairs and food events, selling cheeses. I was awarded the best stall in show at the Lincolnshire county fair for my displayed selection of chesses, along with my knowledge of the products I was selling.”

“Opening the store we have around 120 cheeses available, from Cheddar’s including the Black Bomber from Wales, to the well known Stinking Bishop cheese . We also offer some very different cheese, for example, Morbier, immediately recognizable by the black layer of tasteless ash separating it horizontally in the middle. Traditionally, Morbier cheese consists of a layer of morning milk and a layer of evening milk, separated by the ash. And for those with an expensive tastes, we have Black Truffle Brie from Oxford Cheese, which costs £17.50 for 350 grams, but most of our cheese is a lot more affordable.”

“As well as cheese we have a selection of cured meats and olives. I try to source my foods from local producers and always offer the freshest ingredients possible. For example our smoked salmon has the Kedassia label of quality and is smoked in Enfield.”

“I am currently waiting for a license to sell wines and also run wine tasting evenings. I would to try to introduce people to which wines go best with cheese and why.”

“We also offer a range of over 25 types of coffee beans, including coffee awarded number 10 and number 21 from the cup of excellence list. The

Cup of Excellence, is the most esteemed award given out for top coffee. These awards come from a strict competition that selects the very best coffee produced in that country, for that particular year. Our coffee can be ground in store to customer’s requirements.

But if coffee is not your thing we also stock a range of 20 loose leaf teas.”

“As a way to introduce customers to our produce, we have a section of the shop turned over to a sandwich bar. People can come and buy a selection of made to order sandwiches and salads. I have already seen customers come and try a cheese in a sandwich and then come and buy some on its own.”

“We also offer a range of cakes and pastries to go along with our teas and coffee, as well as soft drinks.”

A Jewel in the Crown of Indian Cuisine Since the first Indian restaurant opened in London in 1810, Indian food has become part of British culture. Indian food is nowadays one of the favourite choices of the British Public. In Enfield there are a lot of Indian restaurants to chose from, so you may wonder why a new one opened last year?

Since opening their doors, Saathi has appeared to be instantly popular with locals and has since attracted diners from further afield but what makes this restaurant a success? EN Magazine sent a reporter along to find out.

After several incarnations, the corner of Gordon Hill and Chase Side, has seen the welcome arrival of the scarlet and black: Saathi.

Nearly everyone has eaten in an Indian before, but it’s not as easy choosing what to pick as you might think. Whilst eating an appetizing popadom, scanning the extensive menu you instantly notice something different about this restaurant. All the traditional favourites are there, the Kormas, Madras and Vindaloo’s. However along side the more regular dishes are an extensive selection of contemporary dishes. From the Salmon Tikka Sizzling and Salmon

Palok (cooked with lentils, spinach and garlic), I had not seen Salmon on a Indian menu before. The meun also includes e exotic sounding Achari Chicken and Lamb (cooked in specially selected pickles and fresh mint and spices), Babber Duck Massala (sliced duck supreme cardamom flavoured) and Beef Ranunak (cooked with roasted spices topped with chopped fried sweet and hot onions in a thick sauce).

Thankfully, one of the many waiters is on hand and happy to guide you through the menu and your personal preferences to make sure you get a meal to enjoy. They were also very happy to tailor dishes on the menu for my dinning partner, who liked the sound of a dish but asked for it to be mild rather than hot. Along with the main course they offer advice on side dishes but are not pushy in selling these.

From the kitchens roll the trolleys, laden with aromatic steaming sizzling platters. For the expectant diners, it is truly a mouthwatering experience! The food is freshly cooked, beautifully prepared and as delicious as anticipated.

I must confess that I have now been to Saathi a few times, as I live within

walking distance. I have really enjoyed the food I have tried in the restaurant and even when I have over been over indulgent in my ordering, it is not a problem, as there is no shame in taking home a doggy bag. Many a time I’ve had salmon the next day !

The restaurant does a take away service too, so if you are in the mood for T.V and a take away, rather than enjoying the bustling buzz of Saathi, they will deliver to you.

I would describe this restaurant as a local jewel in the crown of modern Indian cuisine, but perhaps as I have been a few times I am bias, however if you like Indian food I would recommend you give it a try.

Are you Ready for the Switchover?

You have probably already heard about the TV switch over. But do you know when it is actually happening and if it will effect your television or television recording equipment? EN Magazine tries to answer the questions so you don’t miss your favourite TV programmes.

What’s happening?

The London TV region is moving to digital-only TV in April 2012, marking the end of the analogue TV era.

The process will mean better pictures and more choice for viewers, with Freeview coverage extending to virtually all homes.

will be switched off in two stages. At stage one on 4 April, analogue BBC Two will close and the first group of Freeview digital channels will become available for the first time to thousands of homes watching local ‘relay’ transmitters in digital blackspots such as Finchley, Forest Row, High Wycombe and Sevenoaks.

At stage two on 18th April, the remaining analogue channels – BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 – will be switched off forever and replaced with additional TV, radio and text services.

The two-stage process gives people the chance to check their equipment. Every viewer with Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV, will need to re-tune their digital

TV or box at each switchover stage.

Those who have digital, cable or satellite services on all their TV sets will be unaffected by switchover.

Who’s affected?

The area affected is the London TV region, which has 4.9 million households. Any viewer within the region who receives their TV signal via an aerial will be affected by switchover. It is estimated that 11.7 million television sets in the London TV region will be affected.

Why is switchover happening?

Households in many parts of the London region, and the UK generally,

are unable to receive Freeview services. Switching off the existing analogue broadcasting system will create the capacity necessary to extend coverage to the whole country. This will enable millions of homes to receive digital TV free, via an aerial for the first time, and improve the picture quality for those already watching Freeview, making it less susceptible to interference and picture break-up.

Broadcasting in digital format is also a more efficient way to transmit television signals and will free up airwaves for new services such as ultra-fast wireless broadband, extra channels in either standard or high definition, and mobile television.

What do viewers need to do?

Viewers must ensure that all TVs in their home that they wish to continue watching are capable of receiving a digital signal. Virtually any TV, even black and white ones, can be converted with a digital box.

There are three main options for going digital:

The postcode checker at digitaluk.co.uk tells viewers which options are available in the London region, now and after switchover.

Any viewer still watching analogue TV at switchover will lose BBC Two at stage one and all remaining channels at stage two.

Anyone buying new TV equipment should look for the ‘digital tick’ logo.

What about aerials?

Viewers will only need an aerial if they choose to switch with a Freeview service.

Those with good analogue reception now, will be unlikely to need to replace their aerial for switchover.

Only those who currently have poor analogue reception, are likely to need a new aerial.

Viewers can use the aerial checker on teletext page 284, to check the quality of their reception or wait until after switchover to see if their picture is affected.

What other equipment is affected by switchover?

Any VCR or DVD recorder which is not digital will be affected by switchover. It will still be able to record and playback programmes from a digital TV or box, but it will not be able to record one channel, while watching another. Viewers will need a digital TV recorder to be able to do this.

Viewers updating their recording equipment are recommended to look for a digital DVD recorder or a digital TV recorder which stores programmes on a hard disk and can pause or rewind live TV. A digital TV

recorder with a ‘twin-tuner’ will also convert your TV to digital.

Do viewers need HD TV equipment for switchover?

No. There’s no need to buy HD equipment for digital switchover. Viewers choosing to do so should make sure it carries the ‘digital tick’ logo.

HD services are currently available on satellite and cable, and via Freeview in some areas.

Who is responsible for switchover?

There are three key organisations leading the UK’s switch to digital TV:

Digital UK, is the independent not-for-profit organisation established in 2005 to lead the implementation of digital switchover. It is jointly owned and funded by the public-service broadcasters (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and S4C), and the digital multiplex operators.

The Switchover Help Scheme, is run by the BBC, under an agreement with the Government. It helps older and disabled people make the change to digital TV. It has installed digital equipment for almost one million older and disabled people so far. More information is available from helpscheme.co.uk.

Arqiva, is the owner and operator of the transmitter network. It is responsible for the engineering work for TV switchover at all 1,154 transmitter sites involving 1,200 man-years of engineering work.

Birds of Prey.

Birds of prey have been associated with the Royal Air Force since its foundation.

The Eagle has been given pride of place on the Royal Air Force’s badge.

Its aircraft, from the Kittyhawk to the Harrier, have been regular named after these predators to convey their dexterity in the air and their precision when chasing down the enemy.

Its airfields, throughout their history, have been regularly protected by these hunters in order to prevent bird strikes as RAF jets take off or come into land.

To celebrate the contribution that birds of prey have made to the RAF, they will be running daily, in conjunction with the English School of Falconry, three free displays on the Museum’s Helipad from Thursday 5th of April until Wednesday 11th at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

Here comes the Bride and don’t forget the Groom Still feeling dewy-eyed at the recollection of that romantic Valentine’s Day proposal? Or maybe you seized the initiative on 29 February and took matters into your own hands to give your nuptials a nudge in the right direction. It was doubtless a lovely, thrilling and emotional moment when you decided to get married, and you could talk about it for hours; unfortunately, you probably haven’t got the time.

Right now, your job is to get practical, functional and organised, because while arranging a wedding offers you some top-class fantasy opportunities (could you reasonably get away with putting a pair of Louboutin shoes on the wedding list?), it also calls for some major hard-headed decisions.

(Don’t worry, there’s time for romance later!)

The time, the place Choosing your venue is a huge part of your big day.

There are some things you need to bear in mind. Liz Taylor, managing director of the UK and European wedding planners the Taylor Lynn Corporation, has organised hundreds of weddings, including that of Coronation Street actors Simon Gregson to Emma Gleave, and knows only too well that when it comes to booking a venue, the pressure is really on.

Liz shared her top tips for finding a venue with EN. § Check what is available Shortlist at least three venues that you like, in case your first choice is not available or too expensive;

This is not something to do surfing the net from your sofa! Meet the people who’ll be helping on your big day, and make sure the venue can accommodate your wishes. § Bring in the experts If your budget can stretch to it, think about hiring a wedding planner to take the pressure off and negotiate the best venue deals for you, so all you have to do is enjoy the big day! Also consider using a professional florist and toastmaster, to reduce pressure on you and keep things moving along. § Understand the costs and negotiation.

Venues are keen to have your custom, so consider negotiating on the booking.

This isn’t just about reducing costs: think about including

free setup time in the deal, linens for the tables, corkage if you are supplying your own alcohol and so on. Ask for all the costs in writing and for a list of any extra charges that might apply.

Check that pre-booked alcohol will be charged on consumption only, so you only pay for what is enjoyed by your guests! Think about choosing a quieter time of year, such as January, when hotels are less busy and more willing to negotiate. § Imagine the potential of the space 2012 is all about transforming venues – turning your dream wedding reception into a reality with creativity and innovative thinking.

Use drapes or curtains to add warmth to a room, or perhaps to create separate chill-out zones for guests to relax. Lighting can tie in with your overall colour theme and is a cost effective way of transforming your venue. Most importantly, the look of the venue should reflect your personal taste and style. § Service, service and service. You must be confident that the service you receive on the day will be first rate. Some venues offer an in-house wedding co-ordinator to help you plan aspects of the venue which helps, but remember, they work for the venue and as well as helping you they are also keen to sell you additional services. § Flexibility You might need to start setting up your event the day or even two

days before the wedding, so you should discuss access times with your venue at the early negotiation stage. § Jargon - yes, there is a lot of wedding venue jargon, so don’t be afraid to ask what “pax” means, or how a “sound limiter” will affect you! Knowledge is wedding power. § Catering: The more adventurous couples are choosing ethnic cuisine for the big day with details such as personalized chop sticks adding some fun, but you can take traditional fayre and give it a 2012 make over; for example, serve your favourite desserts as canapé shots, serve roast beef inside miniature Yorkshire puddings, or present a roasted chicken with contemporary flair. If you’re working on a tight budget, why not look at a vintage styled afternoon tea, instead of a wedding breakfast – stylish and less expensive than a big meal – then follow it up at your party later in the evening with a series of small buffet stations serving cones of fish and chips, curry on miniature Naan breads, sushi, miniature hotdogs and so on. Keeps the fun stakes high, and the costs lower. § Entertainment: Check with the venue how late your entertainment can run, when they can set up

equipment and sound check, and whether the venue will provide a room for the band to change in. If you have a soloist, it’s easy, but a 10piece party band will take up more space! Be aware that venues will charge for these extra rooms, so include all of this in your negotiation. § WOW factor Go wild! That may not be your style, but simply making sure that your guests don’t actually see your wedding reception room until the very last minute, will allow them to take on board the full impact of your wedding style.

for a strapless gown, lean towards the one-piece gowns instead of two-piece gowns. A two-piece gown can result in splitting you into two figures. Bias-cut and straight designs are not best for hourglass figures.

Don’t Forget the Groom No wedding is complete without a groom right? So here is some advice on how to survive the planning process and look good and feel relaxed on the day.

Start planning early. The earlier you figure out the style of wedding suit you are looking for, the sooner you can put down a deposit.

If Your Boiler Goes Wrong Don’t Panic !

Help Is A Phone Call Away.

Over the last few months, EN Magazine, has bought you information on a range of products and services, from cars to massage, by testing them out. In this month’s test-drive report we deal with an issue that will probably have happened to most of our readers, a broken or malfunctioning boiler or heating system. This is how we got on.

Last November, just as the cold spell hit, I tried to fire up my boiler and bring a glow of warmth to my home.

With some spluttering sounds, a few coughs and warning lights coming on my boiler decided it was not going to help. I have had the boiler for 12 years and this was not the first time it had gone wrong.

After calling round a couple of gas safe registered engineers, to be told it would be a few days before they could get to me, a friend recommended

Associated Response. 35 minutes later, a knock on my door, introduced me to Hugh Doyle, the owner of Associated Response.

Hugh explained that he and his team (an additional 4 gas safe engineers) only really work in the local area of North London and South Hertfordshire, and that as he gets about on a motorbike and prides himself on his companies’ quick response.

“I can carry the essential tools to diagnose problems and fix most issues on my bike,” said Hugh. “If it is a bigger job or I need a specialist tool then I can call upon other members of the team, who can be here asap.”

Hugh quickly sorted the problem and half an hour later my boiler was purring happily and so was I. Even more so when Hugh presented me with a bill, which was less than some others had quoted just for a call out charge.

Chatting to Hugh, he explained that the boiler was getting on and he could see that some of the parts were beginning to wear.

Ok here comes the sales pitch I thought – but no he just left

me a card and said “Call me if anything else went wrong.”

I was very glad that we have just lived through a mild winter, as my boiler has continued to play up. It seems that it really has had enough.

Some mornings it was just a case of increasing the water pressure, something Hugh advised me to do over the phone. No charge for a chat and I was able to have a warm shower.

With the recent cold snap, I once again tried to warm up my home but even trying the tips Hugh had suggested, the boiler just did not want to start up.

Shivering I put in a call to Associated Response, and that afternoon Hugh was once again at my door.

This time I feared the worst, as my boiler had started leaking water. I know that I had managed to coax another winter from my boiler but I knew it was probably time for a change.

Hugh to my surprise managed to fix the problems but he explained that it would probably only be a temporary fix and really I should look to replace the

Expecting for the “ohhh and arrhh”, that you often get from a tradesman sizing up the scale of a job, I waited to hear what sales patter was to follow.

No sales patter, just a clear indication that the cost for parts would be £140 and £120 for a fan and pump, and £100 for labour. Where were the add-ons and the open ended quote, that programmes like “Rouge Traders” lead us to believe we will get?

Ok £360 did not sound too bad, but I know this was just going to be the start.

Perhaps I should think about a new boiler and not worry any longer about waiting to see if I would have hot water for a shower at home or an early morning dash to the gym!

I approached the topic of a new boiler, with the expectation of a being

told lots of technical specifications and jargon to justify an inflated price.

To my surprise it was almost the opposite. Hugh wanted to know how many radiators I had in the house, do I prefer to bath or shower, how warm and how often I have the heating on?

From this information Hugh started to tell me about the benefits and disadvantages of a range of different combi boilers. He also gave a clear indication on the cost of each boiler system and then gave me his recommendation of a Baxi combi boiler.

He explained, that not only did he find these the best, but also they are to his knowledge one of the most efficient boilers on the market that will give better savings on bills. The Baxi has Gas Adaptive Control, which continually monitors the gas and air, the boiler is using to ensure optimum combustion performance at all times.

This means it maintains the highest efficiency for the lifetime of the boiler and uses less gas – which means lower fuel bills.

Also the boiler has a two speed pump, which gives a 40% reduction in electrical consumption per year. All the kind of things I like to hear especially lower bills.

The other major benefit Hugh told me was that these

boilers have a high flow rate – simply put I will get a more powerful shower.

Hugh also told me about Baxi’s warranty and aftercare service, which he rates one of the best.

Baxi aftersales is provided by its service division heateam. heateam has a dedicated UK customer contact centre, backed by a national network of over 280 highly skilled engineers, who can support installers like Hugh and his team. They are trained to carry out services and repairs on all Baxi boilers.

Having told Hugh I would think about it, I dashed to my computer to check out combi boilers and other local companies. After a little research I found that the information from Hugh was spot on. The price he quoted was slightly better than a couple of other local companies I spoke to. I did try calling a well known national British company, to be told they could get an engineer out to me in a few days to assess the job.

However seeing that the price on their website for the same boiler was considerably higher, I decided not to bother.

Martin explained that the powerflush would clean out the system, removing dirt and limescale that had built up in the radiators and pipes over time. This would ensure the system is nice and clean for the new boiler.

I was impressed that wherever the team from Associated Response worked they would put down dust sheets and took great care when moving things around my home.

Throughout the day I heard various banging and drilling but overall the disruption to my day was kept to a minimum.

Feeling confident, I called Hugh to say I would like to go ahead with the new boiler.

Spring Gardening Advice

Snowdrops may only now be finishing their wonderful display, but nothing says spring to me more than daffodils, and there are already plenty in bloom around the grounds at Capel Manor, with many more to come. Whether they are in pots on the patio, in small clumps in your beds or naturalised throughout woodland or lawns they never fail to bring cheer after the long months of winter.

Now is the time to enjoy those spring bulbs that you may have planted during the autumn. Do not worry if you didn’t get round to planting your own as the garden centres and nurseries are full of potted bulbs, which can be planted straight into your beds to give some much needed spring colour.

There are many varieties of daffodil to choose from; I am particularly fond of the miniature types, for the brightest yellow try ‘Jetfire’ or ‘Tete a Tete’ or for paler

shades try ‘Minnow’ or ‘Silver Chimes’.

As well as enjoying the spring display it is also the time to be planning for bulb displays for later in the year, because now is the time to be planting summer flowering bulbs. Lillies and Gladioli are excellent choices for beautiful blooms throughout the summer and also make excellent cut flowers. However there are many more summer flowering bulbs to choose from, why not try something a little more unusual,like Eucomis with their incredible pineapple shaped flowers, or galtonia with their understated pendant flowers, both provide colour well into the autumn. I like to plant my summer flowering bulbs into pots, so that they can be sunk into the borders when and where seasonal colour is required or alternatively used in summer container displays for the patio.

Now temperatures are beginning to rise, lawns will soon be growing and to give them a boost after winter wear and tear apply a spring feed now. It is important to select a specific spring lawn fertilizer, and to follow the instructions carefully. Do not be tempted to apply a generous dose, as you may well end up creating blackened patches on your lovely green lawn; if it doesn’t rain within a few days of application, be sure to water your lawn well. A well applied fertiliser in the spring should encourage lush green lawns for months to come.

With the continued mild weather weeds are beginnin,g to pop up throughout beds, borders, patios and in fact everywhere. If they are left they can quickly become a problem, competing with other plants for water, nutrients and light. To help prevent this act now. Simply hoe off annual weeds on a

dry day, but try and dig up tougher perennial weeds like dandelions and bindweed, roots and all. Applying a thick mulch of compost will not only help suppress the weeds but will also feed your plants as well.

The spring is the correct time of year to prune many summer flowering shrubs, by following some simple guidelines it can be a straightforward and rewarding task. Shrubs that

Gardening require pruning this time of year include Buddleja, Spiraea, dogwood and Fuschia, pruning them at this time of year allows plenty of time for the plants to put on new, vigorous and healthy growth, which will mature and flower. Using a pair of sharp secateurs cut last years flowering growth to within a couple of buds away from a permanent woody frame work.

With all the fresh spring growth emerging it is easy to become excited about the gardening year ahead and it is the perfect time to plant. At this time of year the nurseries and garden centres will be full of splendid spring flowering plants, they do look lovely now, but remember to think ahead and try and select different plants which will be in flower throughout the season. When planting first dig a hole larger than the pot and dig in some compost in order to supply your new plants with valuable nutrients for the year ahead, once you have filled the planting hole firm the plant into its new home and remember to water well, this will get your new plants off to the best possible start and they will reward you later in the year.

The Capel Manor Spring Show, over the weekend of 14th and 15th April, is the perfect opportunity to find inspiration for your garden and perhaps buy a plant or two. There will be wide selection of gardening stalls including many nurseries, and those selling garden furniture and ornament,s as well as delicious foods and many arts and crafts demonstrations. It would be great opportunity to see swathes of daffodils in the woodland and the ancient Magnolias showing off their fabulous blooms throughout the 30 acres of gardens.

Tom’s Top Spring Tips • Mow your lawns. Raise the mower blades for the first few cuts of the year so the grass has a chance to recover after the winter.

• Cut back any perennials you missed in the autumn to expose fresh new shoots.

• Sow sweet peas an inch deep 5 per 9cm pot. Once they get going; which they quickly will, pinch out the growing tips to promote strong bushy plants.

• Dig over and prepare vegetable beds for late spring direct sowings.

• Lawn edges can really make a lawn; redefine edges using a half moon edging iron. Keep them well clipped with sharp edging sheers.

• Apply mulches to beds whilst they are still relatively empty.

The mulch will feed plants, help conserve water and also smother emerging weeds.

• Look out for slugs and snails, they love spring shoots. There are now many organic, wildlife friendly pellets available or try copper bands to protect pot grown plants. © Ermess | Dreamstime.com
