WALKING AND CYCLING TO SHOW YOU CARE North London Hospice is calling all walkers and cyclists to join their exciting summer fundraising events – the midnight walk and bike ride. Midnight Walk Saturday 14th June 2008 Take part in their annual ladies only midnight walk and join hundreds of women as they take to the streets for a 6.5 or 13 mile walk around North London. This is an extremely popular event so please register early to avoid disappointment! For more information contact Nicola on 020 8446 2288 or email nmoore@ northlondonhospice.co.uk Bike Ride Sunday 22nd June 2008 Get on your bike for their third annual Bike Ride. This year it’s going to be even bigger and better! There are now two routes to choose from (either 20 or 40 miles). Both are circular so you will start and finish at the same location where

everyone will be greeted by a band and refreshments upon their return. For more information on this hugely popular event and to register contact Faye on 020 8446 2288 or email fholahan@ northlondonhospice.co.uk Pauline Treen, Fundraising Director says ‘Last year’s events were very successful and we raised a fantastic combined total of £72,000. This year we are hoping to do even better and we want even more people to give up their time and take part. We are also desperate for volunteers and marshalls as these events rely heavily upon their help.’ With running costs in excess of £5 million the hospice relies on the local community to help raise some of this money through fundraising events such as Hi TechMay.indd 1 the midnight walk and bike ride. By getting involved you could help the hospice to continue its specialist care in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey.

Success for the Save Chase Farm Campaign T

he Campaign to Save Chase Farm Hospital is not over however a small but not insignificant battle appears to have been won. We have received notification from the Planning Inspector and the Secretary of State that the appeal lodged by the Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital Trust to build an additional 279 housing units on the Chase Farm site has been DISMISSED. The hospital Trust can appeal but only through the High Court and grounds for doing so

are extremely limited by planning law. The Planning Inspector has provided a very comprehensive report detailing the main issues covered during this lengthy appeal process. Please contact Kate Wilkinson or Kieran McGregor via Enfield Council if you would like a full copy. The Hospital Trust were unable to prove that this appeal site was ‘surplus to requirements’. We will continue to argue that this valuable piece of NHS land

should be used to house much needed primary and secondary care health facilities for the residents of our borough. The application was also premature; given that the future of the hospital as a whole is yet to be determined. The Joint Borough Health Scrutiny Panel covering the areas of Enfield, Barnet, Haringey and South Hertfordshire were not satisfied with the decision made by the 3 PCTs last December to implement ‘Option One’ (to downgrade Chase Farm Hospital - including the loss of a full A and E, Maternity, Women and Children’s departments.) They subsequently exercised their right to refer this decision back to the Secretary of State for Health Alan Johnson. As a result, he has given the independent body called the ‘IRP’ the task of thoroughly investigating whether or not this would be in the best interest of our residents. This investigation is currently underway. The panel is chaired by Dr Peter Barratt, who has been kept informed at each stage of the process of the areas that we are unhappy with. He came to Enfield in November 2006 and chaired a meeting between the local authority representatives (including SCF) on the

one hand and Sally Johnson the then Chief Executive of EPCT and Avril Dongworth the Chief Executive of the Hospital Trust on the other. The meeting was extremely significant and several positive outcomes resulted. We certainly welcome this further intervention by the IRP and look forward to having the opportunity of discussing our concerns with them in June. The final recommendations of the IRP will be made in July to Alan Johnson and then I assume the final decision will be made as to the future direction of the hospital as a whole. “None of this could have been achieved without public support. Every signature, letter and demonstration has raised the profile of this campaign. We have then been able to take the message to MPs from all parties; Health Ministers; Scrutiny Panels and anyone who will listen that we need ALL front line services to remain at Chase Farm Hospital - A full A & E department; consultant led women, children and maternity services as well.” Said Kate Wilkinson of the Save Chase Farm Campaign.

Enfield’s New Mayor

C

llr Lee Chamberlain is Enfield’s new mayor and his deputy is Cllr John Jackson. In the traditional mayormaking ceremony, departing mayor, Cllr Don Delman handed over the chains of office at the start of the new municipal year 2008/09. In his first speech as Mayor Cllr Chamberlain said: “I am grateful to the council for the trust it has shown in choosing me for this role, which will always rank among the most distinguished high points of my life. “It is a source of some considerable pride for me that I grew up and was educated in the area, which I now represent as a Councillor, Southbury Ward. It’s an area I am deeply rooted in, with my family past and present having lived across it.” “I am the fourth generation of Chamberlains to live in the borough. Family legend has it that my great grandfather walked here from Leicester sleeping in haystacks on the way. “I know from my experience as deputy mayor that people really value the support and presence

of the borough’s representative, and as the youngest Mayor of Enfield for a considerable time, I am looking forward to meeting many more of the people of Enfield who are doing remarkable things. “It is truly

humbling to see the fantastic depth of talent, effort and commitment that exists within our borough. “There are so many worthy causes in Enfield; and I will be making it my business over the coming year to do what I can to support their activities to the fullest.”

Time to Tighten the Belt

W

ith home repossessions up 17% during the first quarter and food prices set to soar by up to 20%, most households are beginning to tighten their belts. Whilst most homeowners with mortgages will be paying higher monthly payments than experienced over the last three or four years big savings can be made in the insurance market. Archers Independent Financial Advisers are able to offer products from the whole market place often saving clients up to 50% off the cost of some insurances. The cost of life assurance for example has actually come down in price over

the last ten years or so. Other insurance products such as redundancy insurance are often costed at over twice the premium obtainable from Independent Financial Advisers and with the current uncertainty in the employment market this type of insurance is now being considered essential for some households. To cover a monthly mortgage payment of £700 Archers have a policy costing only £16.28 per month. Many householders are also paying too much for their buildings and contents insurance. Archers have linked up with Royal Sun Alliance to offer a very competitive product offering comprehensive cover.

As well as making savings in the insurance market clients with personal pensions should consider switching providers. In recent years a number of pension providers including big names such as the Guardian, National Mutual, NPI and many others have come out of the market. With the changes introduced in April 2006 (‘A’ day) all clients should be reviewing their pension arrangements. For more information on any of the above or to book a free consultation contact Archers on 020 8364 5445 or call in at 1 Windmill Hill Enfield EN2 6SE

The idea of a muscled body with a rippling six-pack is often finished off with the perfect suntan, but how many of us have the time to sit in the sun for hours on end? Now Enfield has an answer – James Whitaker Mens’ Salon have installed a Fake Bake spray tan booth. James said “With the sun starting to appear many of us will start to get out bits of our bodies that have been wrapped up all winter. Many people do not want to show off milky white legs or arms; with our spray tan we offer them the solution. I have also had customers wanting

ENFIELD BIKER CHAIRS BIKERS ROAD SAFETY

E

nfield Biker Anthony Fitzgerald has been appointed as Chairman of East London Advanced Motorcyclists (ELAM), taking over from Mike Coggins. Anthony lives in Enfield and he’s been a biker for only six years. Anthony passed his IAM test as a result of his training from ELAM in 2003, and qualified as a group observer in 2007. His stated aim as

12

Chairman is to increase the membership of ELAM, as well as raising its profile in the areas in which the group draws its membership base. Anthony explains“I joined ELAM as an inexperienced biker and saw how the training greatly improved my riding. Since then I’ve seen the same effect on others, regardless of whether they are novices, born-again bikers or experienced riders. Advanced training is simply the best investment you can make in your biking - we will take your riding skills to another level and it costs a lot less than you might think. We’re here to have fun too - ELAM is a club, not a school - with a great programme of social rides, club nights and other events.” East London Advanced

Motorcyclists (ELAM) was formed in 1997 with the aim of improving road safety for motorcyclists. This is done through a structured training course that encompasses both theory sessions and practical observed rides, usually on a one-to-one basis. ELAM uses tried and tested techniques to coach riders of all abilities and experience to the standard required for the advanced test. As part of the training, ELAM also conduct a one day Machine Control Day – at Gallions Reach Shopping complex - where machine handling skills are taught in a safe and controlled environment. ELAM runs three structured courses per year. Each observed ride is designed to build the skills base of the associate trainee and will focus upon a specific subject area. The routes used are specific to each topic being covered. The majority of the training routes encompass the rural

roads that encompass our geographic area. Our members hail from North and East London as well as Essex and Hertfordshire. We have members as far afield as Russia, the United States and one en-route to Australia by

bike! We are a non-profit organization and registered charity run by a committee that is elected annually. The group is like a club, with an extensive social calendar. We publish a monthly newsletter, organize monthly social meetings, normally with a guest speaker, and have a full calendar of ride-outs to places of interest, using the very best roads along the way. For further information on ELAM or visit our website elam.org.co.uk

Local News and Events daily. We create and cook all our dishes in the restaurant and I am particularly pleased with the selection of desserts I am able to offer, all of which are made on the premises” Over the years Moira and James have noticed a change in people’s eating habits in that more and more people wanted to come out for a quick meal. With this in mind they introduced their two course set menu available during the week to complement the a la carte menu. “Another major shift we noticed and one that has now led to one of the busiest days of our week is the Sunday Lunch” added Moira “we serve a traditional Sunday Lunch with all the trimmings but have added some modern twists to our Sunday menu

to cater for all tastes.” Moira and James say the key to their success has been constantly trying to serve the best possible dishes and also having the best team around them. “Many of our staff have been here as long as we have and are often better known by our customers than we are” said Moira. “From our experience of working in major London hotels in banqueting we have been able to adapt what we learnt to cater not only for dinners but also to organize special occasions such as weddings, christenings, birthday’s, anniversaries, office parties and more.” As well as Moira and James working in the restaurant they are both proud that their three sons are following in their

EN MAGAZINE’S HOME CONSULTATION COMPETITION WINNER

H

ilary Biggs was the lucky reader who won the “Home Makeover” competition in the March issue of EN Magazine. The prize consisted of a full home consultation which lasted several hours and was then followed up by a detailed written report from Cindy Brown of Cindy Brown Property Presentation. Cindy provided expert advice on when and where improvements could be made and ideas on de-cluttering to improving the visual appearance of a number of rooms. Cindy also offered paint samples, a detailed list of aims, plus lots of other handy tips and hints on creating an ideal home environment. EN Magazine asked Hilary how she got on.. How long did the Consultation take? Two and a quarter hours. How critical was Cindy to the current décor and layout of your home was Cindy? Not critical, Cindy just gave helpful advice about changes that could be made to make the most of the rooms we have (3 bed house) – but not so that it will cost a fortune.

How helpful was the advice she gave? Very helpful – a real kick start to clearing and decorating our house! We do have a lot of decluttering to do and even basic things like the electrics to do before carpets etc. can be fitted so it’s not just a case of accessorising – we have a lot of decorating still to do but she also suggested timescales and things we can do on a budget which are cheap yet effective e.g. floor tiles for toilet and bathroom which we have already put down since the consultation. Was there one key piece of advice that you are going to implement? There was lots of advice but she did say not to start sorting sentimental things first e.g. photos (and I do have an abundance of these!) – start with say, your towels or bedding and it won’t take as long. How practical was the advice? We are taking two pieces of furniture to Southgate Auction next week (one piece in particular that was on the landing which Cindy said did not fit there), the toilet and bathroom floor

See page 31 for your Local Business Guide

are almost finished, we have started de-cluttering clothes, books and soft toys and have boxes ready to store things while we decorate. Cindy advised on colour schemes whilst matching the curtains etc. that are already in place – she was very practical in that sense as she realised things are expensive to change especially curtains and sofas. Is the advice given going to cost you a lot to implement? It doesn’t have to and we may even make money at the Auction! We will be able to do a lot of work ourselves so that saves money. We have had to start with the basics as there was, for example, no central heating or double glazing which were a huge outlay

when we first moved in. The most expensive thing would be the kitchen extension which is very much a plan for the future. Overall did you find the consultation useful? Very useful and we always have her notes to refer to and she is happy to be updated with our progress. Would you recommend Cindy to some one else? Yes of course!! I have told lots of friends to Google Cindy Brown!!

Golf! A

ny one who has watched the likes of Tiger Woods, Colin Montgomerie and Justin Rose on the TV will marvel at the ease at which they manage to get a small ball to travel great distances and land in a small hole - anyone who has ever picked up a golf club and tried to repeat it will understand the frustration of trying to get that little white ball to go where you want it. The top golfers are now multimillionaires. The likes of Tiger Woods earning in excess of $112 million in a year a major proportion ($100) coming from sponsorships and endorsements - the game of golf has become big money. However for the majority of golfers it is not the money but the abiltiy to play a few good shots in a round and finish all eighteen holes in fewer shots than last time. Due to the way golf is scored using a handicap system, golfers of all levels can compete against each other. If a player’s handicap is ten, and another player’s handicap is twenty. the

difference between the two players is ten golf strokes. Therefore, to even up the match, the player with the lower handicap, which in this case is the tenhandicap golf player, has to give out ten golf strokes to his opponent over eighteen holes, to make the golf game fair. The game of golf originated from Scotland and has been played on the Links at St Andrews since around 1400 AD. The Old Course at St Andrews is renowned throughout the world as the Home of Golf. Around 1750, golf evolved into the sport as we recognise it today. In 1774, Edinburgh golfers wrote the first standardised rules for the game of golf that have evolved and developed in to the rules used today. Golf retains a relatively strong position in the UK, as the fourth most popular regular participation sport. According to Mintel Market Research approximately 4.6 million adults in the UK play golf and just over half class themselves as regular players. The biggest growth in golf players appears in the 7-14 year olds with nearly one in five saying that they play the game. Many people are often put off taking up golf by the costs involved. – however for less than the cost of a Playstation 3 a full starter set of clubs can be bought for about £150.00. For golfers who won’t settle for anything less than top-of-the-line, Majesty Prestigio clubs from Maruman Golf - the ultimate in high-end equipment--Maruman means “ripple of money” in Japanese, an appropriate name as the cost of a set of clubs is around £3,300. The cost of playing at courses can also be off putting with golf clubs like St Andrews charging £130 and Wentworth £285 for a round of golf. But these are at the top end of the scale, more realistically to play a round of golf at many of the local clubs will cost between £15.00 and £40.00 Enfield residents have an abundance of golf courses on their doorstep and EN Magazine set out to test four of the local courses. The four players that played the courses were of

different abilities from low handicaps to beginners to try and give an even balance to the report for readers of different levels.

Bush Hill Golf Club The Club was formed in 1895, but there appears to be a gap in its history during the first year or two of the present century, owing to some difficulty about the lease of the ground. Whatever the difficulty was, it was got over and the Club resumed its activities in 1903. In those days the course was of nine holes with a total length of 2,800 yards and it was not extended to the full eighteen until the summer of 1913. As a nine-hole course Bush Hill Park had not been in any way remarkable, but the eighteen-hole course quickly acquired a reputation of its own, partly because it is unusually short, but still more because its lack of length does not prevent it from being an unusually good test of golf! This unique combination of qualities is emphasised by a curious lack of balance in the layout. The first twelve holes are quite up to the normal standard of length for an inland course; yet no Bush Hill Park golfer will deny that the outward half of the round is neither as interesting nor as testing as the homeward half. The last six holes includes three fascinating short holes and at least one other which any player who fancies his hitting powers will hope to reach from the tee. But this is the part of the round which is apt to play havoc with your score card. The EN Teams View Upon arrival at Bush Hill Golf Club you cannot help but be impressed by the drive up to the Club House and car park. The course starts with a gentle 180-yard hole, the majority of the holes until the thirteenth are then long straight holes – 360 yards to in excess of 500 yards with nice open fairways. This made for a lot of strong driving but few tests for thinking about much

Leisure Activities else other than hitting the ball straight and a long way. The Seventh gives an interesting break to distance with a 178-yard hole that is elevated up to the green. Then having practiced your driving and long irons you reach the thirteenth and suddenly the course takes on a whole new personality. The remaining holes are shorter and have more obstacles, trees, lakes ditches are suddenly obscuring the way and make you really consider the clubs to use and shots to play. We all agreed that our favourite hole was the Par 3 Sixteenth. This is a ‘baby’ hole of 126 yards, giving a dropping shot over a slope to a slightly offset green. If your shot is too short to hit the green, the slope can either throw your ball towards the right hand bunker, or, if you are lucky, kick a shot started too far left on to the green. A difficult grass bunker together with the pot bunker on the right makes players think carefully about their drives. Overall we felt that this course starts well then feels a bit familiar through the middle but by the end you are left with a feeling of being challenged and want to try it over again. The EN Teams View The first hole at Crews Hill sets the tone for this course it looks like a nice fairly straight 414 yards to the hole, but after teeing off and walking to the ball you find out what is in store. The fairway rather than being a nice smooth flat surface is undulating making the next shot one that is a lot trickier than you first expect. Although at first this is off putting, you soon find that this gives an added element to the game as no shot is as easy as you hope making the course more of an challenge and actually more enjoyable. The team were split over which was the favourite hole of the course with two choosing the twelfth, a 376 yards which curved to the right and needing to clear a stream to the green. Do you go for it with a long iron or play safe and lay up? The other two players both liked the fifteenth a short 154 yards to the hole but from the yellow tee the shot is played through some trees and over a stream and bushes. If you get it right and reach the green you feel fantastic if you get it wrong well! - I think you can guess why some liked this hole and others did not. Enfield Golf Club In 1893 six golf enthusiasts in Enfield met together and decided to form a golf club. It appeared that they started to knock a ball around in what was then known as Old Park. Before long there were 25 members that became known as The Old Park 25 Club, later to become Enfield Golf Club. By 1903 James Braid had completed the design and construction of the 18-hole course and whilst a few changes have been made since that time, essentially the course retains its original character. James Braid, was an established golfer who won the Open Championship five times between 1901 and 1910. As well as Enfield Golf Club he designed, reconstructed or advised on more than 250 golf courses throughout the British Isles during his distinguished career. The EN Teams View Between the members of the EN team that played Enfield Golf Club there was the most discussion over the overall quality and benefits of the course. The general agreement was that every one really enjoyed the round of golf. The course is varied with a good mix of long and short holes. The natural slopes and hills adding to the difficulty of holes further improve the layout of the course. The problems started when we discussed specific

Crews Hill Golf Club Originally designed in 1916 – Crews Hill Golf Club is a parkland course set in rural west Enfield, once the hunting ground to the Crown. Modern Crews Hill is less open, with many oaks and silver birch trees defining well-designed golf holes. The great architect Harry Colt designed the course as a heathland course and over the years with changing terrain and weather conditions it has developed into picturesque parkland. Harry Colt designed some 142 courses like Moore Park, Stoke Park, Sunningdale and Wentworth.

Leisure Activities holes and elements of the course. Here there was a definite split between those with a low handicap and the beginners in the team. The problems started around the thirteenth (an unlucky number for some). This hole is played over a hill to an unsighted green, not too much of a problem but what you cannot see is the right to left slope over the hill that can carry your ball way off to the left. The more experienced players felt that this made the hole a greater challenge and showed a players ability. The lesser-experienced thought this hole was just evil. The fourteenth is a short hole, which caused some issues, with a brook running in front of the green splitting the abilities of the levels of players (not all the good players cleared the brook). But then you get to the sixteenth once again every one is in harmony at the ability of the course to bring together players of all levels. A great hole that “dog legs” round to the right over a brook. Apart from the already mentioned issues with some holes the team really enjoyed this course from a single figure handicap to the highest every one found the course both challenging and accommodating. Good course management and club selection will

pay dividends to all that play a round at Enfield Golf Club. Costs Membership £1365.00 A Round of Golf From £28.00 Tel 020 8363 3970 www.enfieldgolfclub.co.uk For a limited period only, Enfield Golf Club is offering a six-month full membership of the club, with no playing restrictions, for £500.

Trent Park Golf Club The players from EN Magazine were a bit apprehensive about how Trent Park Golf Course, which is open to members of the public would compete with the other courses we played which are all private clubs. But there was no need to worry, this course is well prepared and well maintained and the layout incorporating the valley makes for a great round of golf. Trent Park Golf course is part of Crown Golf which is Europe’s largest

golf operator. They have 32 golf and leisure facilities in the UK. The EN Team View The course is a good mix of holes for all levels of golfers identified by the fourth hole. A 378 yard with a dog leg that gives the more experienced and adventurous to take a short cut across the trees down the left cutting out the dog-leg…but watch out for the three bunkers that await, while the more cautious can take the safer route. Another hole that really stood out was the eleventh a 132-yard par 3 where the hole is a lot lower than the tee but you need to be very careful as just behind the green are some shrubs and bushes, hitting the green correctly is a great feeling but go too far and the rough awaits! HERE COMES THE SUN A

sk most people if they prefer the cold, dark days of winter or the hot sunny days of summer and chances are they’ll choose the latter. But even so, the summer can bring a dark cloud with it too – and especially for women. That cloud is not the Great British Summer rearing its ugly head yet again, but the constant battle women have with their bodies week in, week out - and never more so than during the summer months when we’re baring much more than we’d normally dare. Ladies, brace yourselves, I’m talking about cellulite, hair removal, tanning issues and weight loss, to name just a few nasties. And with what seems like a constant barrage of beautiful models, botoxed celebrities and skinny It Girls in the media, not to mention a booming beauty industry, it’s no wonder us girls have never felt so under pressure to get that perfect summer body. I have just been on holiday and I am not ashamed to admit that the moment the booking was complete, I set about on a beauty plan in the vain, and pretty much insane hope that various lotions and potions might just transform me into Kate Moss’s less attractive but still easy-on-the-eye cousin. But with only eight weeks to become a welcome addition to the Italian Riviera’s beaches, the challenge was going to be tough. Nevertheless,

there are some concrete and tried and tested ways to give your body – and your confidence - a welcome lift for the holiday season. Here’s your EN Magazine guide to summer beauty… Smooth operator If you are over 30, chances are you’re one of the 90% of women in the UK who’ve suffered from the female population’s biggest dirty wordcellulite. In response to this, British women spend a whopping £30m a year

on slimming creams, and that’s before we’ve even got started on expensive salon treatments. You can choose to be zapped, injected, pummelled or sucked - and even sit in a space-age pod, be wrapped in seaweed, stick caffeineloaded patches on your skin or wear tights with capsules which claim to “stimulate the breakdown of fatty tissue”. Because cellulite is basically fat, which is why exercise and diet are two of the best – and cheapest - ways of combatting it. Nevertheless,

19

Health and Beauty some cellulite creams, such as those containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), have been proven to help reduce and prevent the appearance of cellulite by improving the skin’s elasticity. Too good to be true? You’d be right. There’s just one snag - once you stop using the creams, the skin returns to its original state. So what can we do? Well, there’s the Endermologie machine, which is supposed to show measurable effects in fighting cellulite. Rollers and gentle suctioning provide a deep massage, increasing circulation by 200 per cent, whilst toxins and abnormal water build up are expelled as connective fibres are stretched. However, most salons only offer a minimum course of treatments at several hundred pounds (if only losing pounds in weight was that easy), so if you’re strapped for cash this summer, try No.7 Super Slim Anti-cellulite

Contouring Balm. After 28 days, 78% of women found that the appearance of their cellulite had reduced, and their thighs were measurably slimmer. Get down to Boots, where you can also find plenty of other cellulite creams such as L’Oreal’s top-selling Perfect Slim range. Palmers Stretch Mark Massage Cream only costs a fiver, so if like me, you’re unlucky enough to suffer the double whammy of cellulite and stretch-marks, give it a go! Another way to improve the appearance of cellulite on the cheap is a good oldfashioned scrub, which buffs away dead skin cells that make skin appear dull, revealing a brighter skin beneath. “Treat yourself to a salon exfoliation to kick-start your routine for summer or try some DIY exfoliation use a body brush or scrub once or twice a week” says Jo Parker, beauty expert at Champneys. “Body brushing is also

By the 30’s, the tan stood for wealth and style and its popularity is no surprise considering a tan is a great way to feel and look instantly healthy and radiant, right? Health and Beauty stuff, which is why these days, everyone is faking it. Fake tans have come on a storm since I started attempting a tan in a bottle, back when you severely risked likening yourself to the Tango Man. So, in an attempt to blend in with those already-bronzed Italian Sophia Loren look-a-likes and so as to not scare the locals away, I booked a St Tropez spray tan at Champneys. I’d heard a lot about St Tropez and to be honest, was a bit sceptical, but I was pleasantly surprised with the colour and even coverage. Most of all, having a (non-damaging) tan all over my body made me feel really great and my lilywhite thighs never looked so healthy! The colour was much more natural than most tanning creams I’ve used before, but the only disappointment was that it didn’t stay on for the ten days suggested. If the idea of wearing nothing but paper knickers whilst a complete stranger sprays a brown dye all over you fills you with fear, Clarins is a DIY brand I keep on going back to again and again. Jo’s top tanning tip:

“Remember, scrub knees, elbows and ankles before applying and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards to avoid any tell tale signs!” Peel back the years As someone who gets the hormonal spot or two and suffered from acne in my teenage years, my skin isn’t one of my strongest points. Like many women, I now have a combination complexion and after the winter gloom, my skin could hardly be described as glowing. After years of trying high street products, Renew Medica, which offers a range of proven, safe and highly successful Medical Aesthetics services across London, at the fraction of Harley Street Prices, was worth a shot. At the company’s plush Winchmore Hill clinic, Lyndsey soon made me feel comfortable and following a comprehensive consultation, she suggested a Fruit Acid Facial Peel, which would “leave my skin refreshed and rejuvenated”. when she mentioned that the range is number one in America and Australia and that it won a Nobel Peace Prize for Chemistry in 2001, I had to give it a go. According to Lyndsey, the effects of a chemical facial peel are far superior to any ordinary facial: “The difference with a peel is that you are treating from within, rather than focusing on the skin’s surface”. Far from being as scary as it might sound, the treatment took no longer than half an hour and simply involved the application of a layer of what feels like a thin gel, which then dries on. It is clear, which means you can go about your normal daily chores with it on, making it very lifestyle-friendly. The peel works into the deeper layers of the skin, thus helping to produce collagen and elastin to work quicker to increase cell renewal. Lyndsey warned me that after Day Four I may see some flakiness and dryness but this wasn’t really the case. Once I started using the after-care products provided as

Health and Beauty part of the treatment, I slowly started to feel an improvement in my skin and it generally felt and looked much smoother and clearer. Even better, I only had one lonely spot in the weeks following the peel (and most importantly whilst I was on holiday and not wearing much makeup), making it worth every penny. Do try this at home… Microdermabrasion is an alternative to a peel - a fantastic skin-brightening treatment using tiny crystals to gently buff the skin making it beautifully radiant. The great thing is that they are available for use at home! Try Champneys Fresh Face Microdermabrasion System. Beauty comes from within This may be a cliché, but according to Champneys Nutritionist, Ailsa Higgins it is true - not just metaphorically, but literally. Here are her top ‘you are what you eat’ tips for summer health… Include good fats such as olive oil, oily fish, nuts and seeds in your diet to make your body better at using your fat stores as fuel. A recent study also found that taking a fish oil supplement helped increase fat loss from exercise. Reduce foods that commonly cause bloating, like wheat, sugar and yeast, and avoid sugar highs which can encourage fat storage around the middle. Eat regular modest meals that include some protein, a moderate amount of low GI carbs (like oats or brown basmati rice, puy lentils or chick peas, or sweet potato) and plenty of non-starchy vegetables - which mostly grow above the ground! Increase your sun protection by eating tomatoes every day - cooked, tinned, as paste or puree is best as they are rich in an antioxidant nutrient called Lycopene which our bodies don’t absorb well from raw tomato. Tomatoes benefit your heart too: a high Lycopene intake appeared to reduce heart attacks by 40% in the recent Euramic study. Dehydration is the number one enemy of good skin! Drink plenty of

water - little and often is the key, so aim for a small glass every hour. If you’re exercising for longer periods and it’s hot and/or the sweat rate is high, drink extra water and add a little fruit juice and just a touch of salt to replace lost minerals. Eat lots of berries, especially blueberries that are rich in compounds called Proanthocyanadins that protect the collagen and elastin in the skin. And feast on delicious blackcurrants, too, a rich source of flavonoids that block the enzymes responsible for breaking down skin components. For your body to look its best you need a good intake of all nutrients, so get yourself a good multivitamin/mineral supplement such as Champneys Multi-nutrient, or Solgar VM75. And remember, if you’re over fifty years old many micronutrients, such as vitamins D and B are less well absorbed.

Getting the body you want!!! W

ith the Summer holidays and hot weather just around the coner many people start to look at their bodies with worry, dreading the thought of baring all in skimpy clothing on the beach or in the park. After a winter of keeping wrapped up and eating the kind of foods to keep us warm its often the case that a few pounds may have crept on or those toned muscles have lost some of their form.. We have also seen the adverts Our Weight Loss Course lasts 12 for fast weight weeks loss and heard the stories of losing The results could last a lifetime a stone in a week on this or that diet - but often these diets just do not work. So what is the answer? If working out and training is not getting you the results that you want or you find exercise a bore then David Lloyd Gym may have the solution that will help you get fit, lose weight and change your lifestyle - their Weight Loss Course. The course is not a diet regime

24

but a twelve-week programme that really works. Each week the course starts by having a group discussion on an element of diet such as the need for fibre or the effects of carbohydrates on your body. The course looks into the kinds of foods you should be eating and why they are good or bad for you. By gaining a better understanding of the food groups, you have the chance to build a healthier diet and lifestyle. There are also group exercise classes that help you to work on elements of fitness or parts of your body that you want to tone up. The course emphasis is on help and support: individuals set their own goals along with help and advice on how they can achieve them. “This course was really useful and has helped me make some significant changes in what and when I eat. As well as the major topics we discused, the knowledge from the trainers and the little tips they gave have been a major aid in helping me to lose over 10 lbs over the 12 weeks of the course” Champneys Wellbeing Director, Louise Day, suggests the following body-buffing tips to gain body confidence at home or abroad. And there’s no reason to break your regular workout schedule, simply take it with you on holiday… 1. Take a walk in the park (or the beach)! For a cardiovascular workout, get some fresh air with your friends or family – plus it costs nothing! 2. Go Dippy! Place both hands and your bottom at the edge of a chair (with knees bent). Bend the elbows and dip down towards the floor and bring yourself back up with your arms. Start gradually and built up over the weeks. This exercise is ideal for toning the back of the arms for those short sleeved tops! 3. Step up! To tone the legs stand at the bottom of the stairs and step up and down Complete 20 repetitions before leading with the other leg. Also incorporate squats into your daily routine. Health and Beauty Personal Trainer, Louisa Mitchell, works with her clients on a one-toone basis to build a specific workout designed to achieve their aims along with her personal support and motivation. As a personal trainer Louisa is able to visit people in the comfort of their own homes at times that can fit easily into their lifestyle. After working for a few years as a Project Coordinator for a property company, Louisa turned her back on the City and followed her dream by going to college to do a personal training course and gaining a Register of Exercise Professionals Level 3 qualification. Louisa told us “Not everyone likes going to a gym so I bring the gym to them along with my experience and any equipment that we may need. However some of my clients do have gym memberships as well and I help them build fitness programmes to use both at home and at the gym.” As well as one-on-one training Louisa runs circuit groups for small

groups working with both groups of friends and visiting small companies to offer training sessions. “Many people really benefit from one-on-one training not only from a fitness point of view but I also help with the motivation that is needed to keep going and keep pushing to achieve the goals you set. Some clients feel that they need to be pushed hard and I will see them every week. Others already have strong motivation and I see them once a month to improve their fitness plan – it really depends on the person and what they want to achieve” said Louisa.

Pets Corner

People are not the only ones to suffer in the sun

-

remember your pets!!

A

s summer fast approaches you may notice changes in your pets’ behaviour. For example, they may start waking up earlier or develop different dietary needs. All pets, whether large or small, from dogs to mice have extra needs during the hot summer months. In order to try to prepare for any changes you may need to make I have provided some examples of the most common problems pets have in the summer and some simple but effective

26

solutions to these problems. The first and most obvious change in your pets’ in the summer is that they shed their hair. This enables your pet to keep cool, it is almost like the animal equivalent of having a spring clean. In the warmer months your pets’ intake of water will increase so you must ensure there is water available at all times. You may even think that allowing your dog to swim in the local pond or lake is a good idea, to let them cool down. However, you should be aware that if your pet does go into any lake or pond there are all sorts of germs and diseases that could be picked up. If at all possible it is best to try to keep pets away from the water, which is often easier said than done! Heat is another obvious factor, and can be fatal for pets if they do not have adequate shade. You may find that you need to change the amunt of times you walk your dog. An example of this is at weekends. You may think it would be nice to go to the park to sunbathe with your dog in tow. However, if you are not providing water and shade for your dog then this is not a good idea. The ideal times for dog walking

in the summer months is early in the morning and then later on in the evening after the sun has set. At this time the temperature will have cooled down and your dog will be more likely to enjoy his/her walk. Travelling with your pets is also a risk in the heat and it is very important to understand that leaving your pet in a locked car can be fatal. In sunny weather cars become ovens, with temperatures soaring to 120°F/49°C or even higher. Because of this, the RSPCA advises that animals are never left inside cars. Leaving windows open or putting a bowl of water in the car does not help. Dogs can die from heatstroke in a minimum of 20 minutes. If you see a dog left inside a parked car on a warm day, please contact the Police on 999 for assistance. In the event of the police being unable to attend, please contact the RSPCA 24hour Cruelty and Advice telephone line 0300 1234 999. With this in mind the same can be said of rabbits and guinea pigs that are locked in a shed or not provided with adequate shade. The last and most visually disturbing problem of them all is flystrike. Flystrike occurs when flies lay eggs on you pet and they hatch into maggots and attack your pet eating into their skin. This problem is most commonly seen in rabbits but can affect any animal. The easiest way to protect your pet from this life threatening problem is by ensuring both your pet and his/ her cage or surrounding areas are kept clean. So what can you do to protect your pet? I have some simple solutions to make your pet more comfortable in the heat: White animals are liable to burn in the sun just like we do; putting suntan lotion on pink skin such as ears and noses will make your pet more comfortable and stop them from burning. Another simple tip is to always ensure there is water available for your pet in more than one location, perhaps a bowl in the shade in the garden and

Pets Corner

another one in the kitchen. As I have previously mentioned providing shade for your pets is vital, putting a towel or a cover over one end of a rabbit run provides an area of shade where your pet can relax. Pets in tanks must also be considered. If your pet’s tank is in the sun you may need to move it or find a way of blocking out the sun. Even pets that like it warm such as tropical fish can get too warm and die. If it is extremely hot or you are concerned about your pet you can help to cool them down by wetting a small towel and rubbing it over the coat to make them damp. For smaller animals that you cannot wet you can get cooling blocks from pet shops. Cooling block are like tiles but are made especially for pets (most often used for chinchillas). You can put them in the fridge then put into your pet’s cage so that they can sit on the block to keep cool. When you are walking your dog, always take water with you and stop regularly in the shade for breaks, do not let your dog over exert itself. Dogs can suffer heat stroke just like humans except they have a thick coat of hair on them so if it is too hot for you to run then don’t let your dog.

Throwing balls or sticks in the heat will only end up with your pet overheating and potentially ending up needing veterinary attention. I have consulted with Head Vet Dr John Gladstone of Medivet Enfield for his advice on what the most common summer ailments are to watch out for. Summer conditions are wide ranging and some problems are horrendous and even fatal, others are just an irritation. Some occur in the winter too but are more troublesome in summer. t Heat / sun stroke – A dog left in a car or confined space without adequate ventilation, or if pets are left outside with no shade from the extremities and cannot get out of direct sunlight can often prove to be fatal t Flystrike – (When flies lay eggs on your pet that turn into maggots) Rabbits especially and other pets can contract this if they do not have their living conditions cleaned out on a regular basis and this can be fatal if not caught early enough. t Sunburn – Animals can be susceptible to this if they are white skinned, but also the tops of the ears and the tip of the nose of all animals can be burnt by the suns rays. This can

lead to skin cancer. t More fighting – Dogs are taken out more in the summer and let off their leads more. The opportunity for fighting is increased. t Allergies / Fleas / Ticks – Some pets allergies can get worse in the summer months due to the rise in the pollen count or if they get bitten by insects (fleas) leading to flea bite allergy. These are an irritant to dogs and cats but can be avoided by using a flea / tick prevention treatment t Dehydration – Pets can get very dehydrated in hot weather especially if they do not have adequate drinking water available at all times. t Tick born diseases – Some diseases are carried by ticks for example Lyme disease, and if not treated this can cause problems with the joints, heart and nervous system. t Grass seeds – These are very common in July / August as dogs and cats like to explore long grass whilst out on walks, and grass seeds can become stuck in the feet, and even sometimes they can get them caught in their mouth, throat, ears and noses. In conclusion I have discovered that by making little adjustments to your pet’s lifestyle in the summer you can avoid a whole lot of grief for yourself and your pet; however should you have any concerns about your pet during the summer months always contact your local vet or animal welfare centre for advice. You can also look at the RSPCA’s website at www.rspca.org.uk which provides valuable advice on all types of animals. By Kelly Smith
