Learning does not have to be just about books! Staying on isn’t about staying at school…college offers a different experience leading to higher education or employment Some people were just born to be hands on and sitting in a classroom and learning from a textbook makes them feel ensnared rather than inspired. But when that person

is given the chance to put theory to practical use, a whole world of discovery opens up before them. Capel Manor caters for a mix of ages and abilities, with many students going on to university, setting up their own businesses, or gaining challenging jobs, as well as giving those who have struggled in mainstream education a new lease of life.

As the largest landbased college in London, Capel Manor offer courses for those interested in working with plants, trees, flowers or animals. Full and part-time courses lead to nationallyrecognised qualifications, which lead in turn to employment or further study. Subjects such as animal care, countryside management and horticulture are particularly popular with school leavers and tuition is free for those aged 16 to 18 years old. Those that have already completed A levels are still entitled to another free year’s education on a fulltime course, as long as they are still 18 on 31 August 2012.

Counterfeit clothes are rebranded for those in need Nearly 3,000 counterfeit clothing items are losing their labels and being rebranded for distribution to vulnerable people living in Enfield. “We are extremely grateful for this clothing and pleased that we can rebrand it and return it to Enfield where it will go to people in great need. This means that many families and people in need can make use of clothing that would have been sold at inflated prices. I am delighted that we can help people in this way and make good use of the clothing.” said Richard Humphrey, senior co-ordinator at His Church a charity based in Lincolnshire,.

Trading Standards officers and police visited an upstairs office in Ponders End, in December 2008, and found 2,891 items, with a retail value of more than £20,000 ready for sale over the Christmas period. Investigations revealed that Ibrahim Guder, was responsible for the hoard and he was charged with 12 offences and found guilty of 10 offences, by a jury at Southwark Crown Court in February2012, admitting the other two during the trial. Among the items found were counterfeit clothes bearing fashion house labels including Ralph Lauren shirts, Louis Vuitton handbags, Links of London jewellery, Nike trainers, Timberland

boots, Chloe T-shirts, Prada purses, Stone Island sweaters, Moschino jeans, Fred Perry shirts D&G jeans, History Iceberg jeans and Scarface T-shirts. The police tipped Enfield Council off about the clothing in Ponders End. Once there, officers found a photograph of Mr Guder attached to a printer, as well as his mobile phone, car keys and a computer. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Chris Bond, said: “The sale of counterfeit items is not a victimless crime, these items are usually extremely poor quality and in many cases their sale helps to fund more serious crimes, such as people smuggling, drug dealing and prostitution. “I would urge residents to let us know if they think traders are dealing in counterfeit items, so we can investigate and take action if necessary. “This case sends a strong message that we do not tolerate counterfeiters operating in our borough, and we will bring them to justice regardless of how long it takes. This prosecution is an excellent example of the strong partnership work between our trading standards and legal teams and the police.”

Funding deal renewed for Hertsmere PCSOs Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) will continue to be out and about in Hertsmere, after a funding agreement was renewed for the seventh consecutive year. Hertsmere Borough Council, is continuing its £128,000 contribution to local policing in the area for 2012/13. The money pays for the equivalent of 4.5 PCSOs. Overall Hertsmere has 24 PCSOs covering the patch. As part of the agreement, Hertfordshire Constabulary has pledged to contribute the same amount. In March, the council’s Chief Executive Donald Graham and Chief Inspector for Hertsmere Dean Patient, sealed the deal by signing on the dotted line. Maintaining PCSO numbers was identified as a priority by residents in a participatory budget survey, conducted by the council at the end of 2010.

have said they want us to continue to support PCSOs, and we know the vital role they play in keeping our streets and parks safe. That is why we have pledged to fund PCSOs in our community for the seventh year running.” CI Patient said: “This is great news and I thank Hertsmere Borough Council for their continued support. Our PCSOs are integral members of Safer Neighbourhood teams and they have made a real impact on policing, especially for local communities. This further funding confirms to me that the council acknowledges the positive contribution of our PCSOs to keeping Hertsmere such a safe place.” The funding agreement was set in place until 1st April 2013. PCSOs will continue to be employed and managed by the police.

Deliveries for Ladies Safe Lady Scheme The Safe lady scheme came about through a need that we have identified in the market place. You have car insurance companies aimed at women only drivers, also you have mini cab car companies staffed only by women drivers. Well we would like to think as market leaders in the bed trade that we have come up with a new delivery service. If for any reason a lady feels happier or safe / or secure by having a female member of our staff along on delivery, please feel free to request this. It’s free of charge and even though our delivery staff are part of our company, not outside contractors, you may be unhappy at the thought of two delivery men in your bedroom. Whether you have had a bad experience from a big chain & their delivery staff, or a small rude shop, or if it is a case of you’re having a bed delivered to your old Mum and you can’t get away from work & feel that your Mum would feel happier with a lady member of our staff there on the delivery with our delivery staff. Reassurance is a wonderful thing. Very often afterwards people say there was no need as the delivery men were fantastic but that’s not the point. The point is that a female member of the public, whether young ROCKY REEF FEB2012.indd 1 or old feels comfortable on the delivery. Recently, a mum asked for this service for her daughter, moving from the Midlands to London, to an area she was unfamiliar with. The mum said they were going to buy the bed from us anyway, but as her daughter was feeling a bit homesick and vulnerable, this just gave her piece of mind.

Schools celebrate a flaming good time As the Olympic torch arrives on British soil on Friday 18th May, Enfield will take this as its cue for its own school torch relay. Cllr Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for schools and children’s services, will cut a ribbon and start the relay in Edmonton at St John & St James primary school at 10 am sending 311 pupils carrying their own crafted torches through Edmonton’s Fore Street to Pymmes Park where they will dance and celebrate. Cllr Orhan, said, “All our schools have entered into the spirit of the Olympics. This is the first leg of the relay that includes 98 schools across the whole borough – that’s at least 55,000 pupils and students. This is a superb way for us to mark the London Olympics and something that our young people will remember.” Schools have been bought together into groups and each leg of the relay will finish at a local park. The relay will stop at nine parks over a two monthlong period ending Friday 13th July at the QE2 Stadium in Donkey Lane, Enfield. As primary school children make their way to their allocated parks, they will not only carry their decorative torches, but they will also carry the flags of one of the nations that their school has adopted for the occasion. Wearing sports clothes or national costumes and with painted face,s the children will be accompanied by older sports leaders from secondary schools. Heather Knightley, headteacher at St John & St James, said, “We are delighted to be taking

Shape up at Potters Bar’s new outdoor gym Visitors to a Potters Bar park can enjoy a new way of keeping fit in the fresh air, thanks to an outdoor gym. The three fitness ‘stations’ at Oakmere Park, combine seven apparatuses - a sit-up bench, a power bike, two free runners, a cross trainer, an upper body trainer and a body flexer – and are designed for users aged 15 or above. Their proximity to the junior play area, mean parents, guardians and grandparents can tone up while their youngsters are enjoying themselves. After a need for extra park facilities in Potters Bar was identified, extensive consultation was held with residents last summer on the kind of equipment they would like to see in the park and its location. The £12,000 project has been spearheaded by park-owners Hertsmere Borough Council and funded by Hertsmere Together, the local strategic partnership responsible for shaping services in the borough. It follows the council’s success in the national Green Flag award scheme, where six of the borough’s parks have been granted awards.

Aaron Niblett, area parks officer for the council, said: “This new outdoor gym is a fantastic addition to an already excellent park and something that should be fun to use, and keep everyone healthy and active. “Promoting a healthy and active lifestyle is a priority of Hertsmere Borough Council. Staying active and healthy isn’t something you should just do when you are young, but at every age.” Participants in the Health Walks, run by The Countryside Management Service in conjunction with the borough council, will be able to use the equipment on their route through the park.

Enfield Council has launched a new Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) to be used by inspectors during inspections of food premises. The new ratings will apply to restaurants, takeaways and cafés, along with other food outlets. This national scheme, developed by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in partnership with local authorities, provides information on food hygiene standards to help people to choose where to eat out or shop for food. Silver Service Café in the Hertford Road, Enfield, EN3 has been awarded a grade 5, the top mark for hygiene and cleanliness.

Gill Connell of the Friends of Oakmere Park said: “I think the equipment is a great addition to the park, where it is both accessible and free to all. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy taking exercise than in the fresh air with the birds singing and, hopefully, the sun shining. I’m sure lots of people will be taking advantage of it.”

Owner Mr Bayeren is delighted. He said, “Our café has been checked thoroughly and I am very proud and pleased that our systems have achieved the highest standard. I am delighted to welcome Cllr Bond here, where he can see for himself that we run a first class café.”

The outdoor gym was designed and produced by playground specialists Kompan Ltd.

Restaurants, takeaways and pubs, are inspected by food safety officers from Enfield Council, to check that their hygiene standards meet legal requirements.

If in doubt about undertaking physical exercise, consult with a doctor beforehand.

From left to right are Joy Stovell, Gill Connell and Peter Silverthorne, all members of the Friends of Oakmere Park, pictured as they try out the new outdoor gym.

Food outlets get new hygiene ratings

EN Magazine May 2012

At the end of the inspection, the business is given one of the six ratings. The top rating of ‘5’ means that the business was found to have ‘very good’ hygiene standards. Any business should be able to reach this top rating. Ratings 0 – urgent improvement needed 1 – major improvement needed 2 – improvement necessary 3 – generally satisfactory 4 – good

5 - very good The food safety officer will explain to the person who owns or manages the business what improvements are needed and how they can achieve the top rating of ‘5’. The local authority will check that these improvements are made. These ratings can be viewed on the FSA website at food. gov.uk/ratings and the food business will be given a sticker and certificate and encouraged to display these at the entrance to their premises. Catriona Stewart, Head of the Food Hygiene Ratings Team at the FSA said, “We recognize the real progress that has been made in improving hygiene standards in food outlets through ‘local’ food hygiene rating schemes. “But having a single nationwide scheme will mean a level playing field for businesses across the country, and consumers will be able to recognize and use the ratings in their own area, as well as further from home. So it’s great news that Enfield Council has announced its intention to switch to the new national scheme.”

Children’s Hospice Week, the UK’s only awareness and fundraising week for children’s hospices, takes place 18-25 May, culminating in Superhero Friday – a special hero inspired day of fundraising. Children’s hospices help seriously ill children, who are not expected to reach adulthood and their families. Just like superheroes, children’s hospices are there for people when they need them most. Together for Short Lives, the national voice for life limited children, is asking that you be a hero in Children’s Hospice Week and help raise funds

for these vital and important services. “Children’s hospices are incredible places that help lifelimited children, young people and their families. As Patron of Together for Short Lives, I’m calling on you to be a hero and fundraise for Children’s Hospice Week.” Said Simon Cowell, In the EN area Noah’s Ark Children’s hospice, is helping to make the difference. Noah’s Ark is an expanding children’s hospice service, providing support for children and young people with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions

and their families, living in the communities of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington. Their aim is to help families enjoy their lives together, while their child is still alive or undergoing stressful treatment and go on to face the future with hope if their child dies. Their services have developed over time in response to the requirements of families – they aim to provide what families say they want, when they want it and in a place of their choosing. The services provided range from practical and emotional support, outings for the family and, in some cases, end-of-life and bereavement care. Noah’s Ark currently has a very active community team, providing vital support to life-limited children and their families. To date they have provided support to 130 families. Through initiatives like their Play Scheme, Siblings Support Programme, Family Days and Specialist Family Carers they are able to offer families support where it is

most needed, filling gaps in areas not supported by other service providers. With land now acquired, this community work will, one day, be complemented by additional services within a hospice building. Noah’s Ark, in common with many children’s hospices, currently receives no financial backing from Government. In order to continue they develop their services they rely on the generosity of their supporters. You can get involved and raise money for Noah’s Ark by taking part in Superhero Friday (25 May). Alternatively, why not go along and meet the Noah’s Ark team at, or take part in, any one of the following events. Superhero Run, Regents Park, London (Sunday 13th May) Noah’s Ark staff, Amy, dressed as ‘Cat Woman’, Sue, dressed as ‘Super Ted’ and Priya, dressed as ‘Super Woman’, will be taking part – why not sponsor them? I’ll meet you any time you want, in our local Italian restaurant…

It was a chilly, rainswept spring night on Enfield’s Chase Side, and yet we found ourselves basking in the warmth of a little Italy. Enzo’s restaurant, with its olive green walls, discreetlylit evening ambience (lights were dimmed at around 7.20), and a feature wall reminiscent of a sloping hillside of sun-baked village houses, was a welcome refuge from the damp north London pavements. Yes, my mission this evening, should I choose to accept it (and frankly, who wouldn’t?) was to review Enzo’s midweek pasta menu. ‘Ooh, move over, AA Gill, (The Times restaurant critic)’ I said to my husband, who was to be my companion for the evening. ‘Can I be the blond?’ he asked hopefully. (We restaurant reviewers and our companions are full of witty banter.) ‘No, but you can be Greg Wallace off Masterchef when we get to the puddings,’ I said kindly to my dessertloving husband. The greeting from the staff was warmly welcoming. Would we like a drink in the bar first? Because, although Enzo’s is a restaurant, it also has a bar area where you can just swing in and hang out with a glass of wine or a cocktail, whilst grazing upon snacks, such as

12

mixed fried wild mushrooms and garlic bruschetta or Sicilian green olives, so bear that in mind next time you’re passing and fancy checking it out. The new midweek King of Pasta menu, runs through Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The a la carte menu is also available. We were seated at a corner table, which meant we got to gaze out of the window into the drizzle at other souls not on our side of the glass. The point is, at prices like these, they could afford to be where we were. Pasta menu mains range from £6.75 to £8.75, and – get this – if you order a dish from the King of Classic Pasta menu, you get to take another dish home with you. Yes, that’s two for the price of one; and if you’re used to crying inside as you gaze at your thirsty date and the price of the drinks on a restaurant menu, fear not. Wines here come from £3.50 per glass, and bottles are £14.50 - £35. And the food? We kicked off with a platter of a variety of home-made breads, balsamic vinegar and a wonderfully peppery olive oil for dipping, plus some olives the size of baby limes. We needed to keep our strength up for the important dining decisions that lay ahead.

EN Magazine May 2012

I went for the Fresh Scallops to start. These are so easy to get wrong. Too little cooking and they’re queasily underdone, too much and they’re like a Ryman’s rubber. These ones were just right, pearlescent and gently quivering on the fork. My companion opted for the Calamari Fritti, which arrived, arranged over salad leaves, in a tower the size of the Shard (did I mention the generosity of the portion sizes in this place?). The batter was light and crisp, the calamari tenderly toothsome, and the plate scraped clean when the waiter came to clear. A small autobiographical note here: I am from the north, and have been trained since birth to boil vegetables until they’re dead. Moving south, and discovering that not all pasta came out of a tin smothered in tomato sauce, but could in fact be cooked at home, I applied the same principles. Consequently, I have been serving up limp, soggy strands of exhausted spaghetti ever since. After dining at Enzo’s, I have seen the light. The Linguine Mare Chiaro I ordered was what I now know pasta should be like, delightfully al dente. The prawns were huge, the portion was the size of something your Italian mama

would give you if you’d been away from home for a bit and turned up looking peaky and peckish, and the chilli sauce was just the right side of fiery. My husband ordered Rigatoni Bolognese, which comprised tubes of pasta stuffed with Bolognese sauce. It was delicious, and he got to choose another dish to take home, thereby saving another handful of innocent domestic spaghetti from being boiled to death. Then came the puddings. My faux “Greg Wallace” aka my husband was unable to decide. The choices were painfully challenging. In the end, the waiter helpfully brought him a tasting plate of tiramisu, honeycomb ice cream and pavlova. Despite being already well-fed, I heroically sampled each, in the cause of doing a good job for EN, but if truth be told I’m leaving the pudding review to him. Husband’s pudding review: ‘It was really nice,’ accompanied by a wide grin of pure pleasure. Greg W couldn’t have done it better. At least he stopped short of offering to marry it! On the way out, we met another couple. She was determinedly opening the door and crossing the threshold like a woman focused on dinner. He looked a little more cautious. ‘What’s it like in there?’ he asked, nodding towards the restaurant entrance. ‘It’s really good,’ I said. ‘And the portions are huge,’ my husband added. ‘You should go in,’ I said. They did. ‘Don’t propose to the pudding,’ I silently whispered. Although you could be forgiven for wishing to do so. by Sarah Vittachi

It will then tour the country during 2012 in public spaces, hospices and hospitals, helping to break down the final taboo and British people’s reticence to talk about dying. Eve Richardson, Chief Executive of the National Council for Palliative Care and the Dying Matters Coalition said: “Every minute someone in England dies, but many people still feel uncomfortable talking about end of life issues. Talking about dying, death and bereavement is in everyone’s interests, as it can help ensure that all of us can get the care and support we want, where we want it at the end of our lives. Dying Matters Awareness Week, with its wide range of events and activities across England, promises to be a great opportunity to encourage people to become more confident in talking about dying and to take small actions to plan for the future.”

Many potential customers come in wanting to look good on a mountain bike or racer, when in reality these types of bikes will be uncomfortable and hard work for the type of cycling they

Cycling want to do.” Mountain bikes are designed for off road – lots of dirt tracks, with tyres that offer lots of grip –if your going to spend a lot of time riding on roads this will increase the resistance and amount of pedalling you have to do. Hybrid-Recreational, are designed for a mix of road and off road cycle paths. A tyre thinner than a mountain bike’s, but thicker than a road bike tyre it creates less resistance, while the riding position is designed for comfort. Road bikes are designed for the cyclist, who is looking for speed over road surfaces, with a very occasional cycle path. Skinny tyres and lightweight frames are designed for speed and hard cycling over roads, making them ideal for training, racing or fast commuting. “The next thing to consider is the budget you have to spend on a bike – our range of bikes start around £300 rising to over £10,000, we are currently building a specialist £6,000 road bike.” James said. “Once we have identified the correct type of bike for the customer, we then start looking for the right size. The first thing we do is measure the inseam of the rider to calculate the correct size frame. We then get the rider to sit on the bike they choose and take a few more measurements: the angle of the knee to the pedals, the angle of the riders arms to the handle bar. With all the measurements taken we are able to make adjustments to the bike, like the seat

and handle bar height and position. The aim of taking these measurements and the adjustments is to set up the bike to be as comfortable as possible, while still allowing optimum efficiency and power and a enjoyable ride.” “A part of the service that we offer people buying a new bike, is that they come back to us after a few weeks of riding to make sure that everything is set up correctly and make any adjustments. We also offer a fitting service to riders who would like to take advantage of our fitting service to get the optimum performance from their existing bikes.” As well as an extensive range of cycles from Trek and BMW, Stephen James also has a range of clothing and accessories, as well as the all important safety equipment. In these days of busy and over crowded roads, taking a few safety precautions is a must for cyclists. The directgov website suggest the following safety information: Make sure you have the right gear -Fit a bell to your bike so you can signal to other road users -Make sure you wear clothing that’s appropriate for cycling. You should be able to move freely without anything getting caught in your bike’s chain or wheels, or covering your lights. You should wear: -light-coloured or fluorescent clothing that helps other road users to see you in daylight and poor light -reflective clothing and/or

accessories, like a belt or arm/ ankle bands, in the dark -Your rucksack can affect your balance on a bike if it’s too big or heavy. You could use panniers instead. Helmets -Helmets can help prevent a head injury if you fall from your bike. You should wear a helmet that: meets the British Standard (BS EN 1078:1997) -is a snug fit and positioned squarely on your head - sitting just above your eyebrows, not tilted back or tipped forwards -is securely fastened by straps, which aren’t twisted, with only enough room for two fingers between your chin and the strap -Make sure you replace your helmet every five years. Don’t buy a second-hand helmet - it may be damaged and not protect you properly. Compulsory lights and reflectors If you use your bike at night or when visibility is poor, you must fit a: -white front light -red rear light -red rear reflector -amber/yellow pedal reflectors - front and back on each pedal -Reflectors fitted to the front and the spokes will also help you to be seen. You can get lights that are steady or flashing or a mixture (steady at the front and flashing at the back). A steady light at the front is important when you’re cycling through areas without good street lighting. -Your pedal reflectors and rear reflector must meet BS 61022. You can also use a light or reflector that meets a standard

accepted by another European Commission (EC) country (equal to the British Standard). Making sure that you have the right clothing can make a difference to your cycling experience. Enfield Commercial Kitchen Design Boss Wins Director of the Year Marios Poumpouris of Chiller Box Ltd, has been crowned “Director of the Year 2011” in the category for businesses up to £4.99 million turnover, at the prestigious IoD (Institute of Directors) London and the

South East Director of the Year Awards, held on 29th March 2012 at the Landmark Hotel. Chiller Box started from humble beginnings in a spare bedroom in Enfield, in 2004,and is now one of the UK’s leading commercial kitchen design companies specialising in restaurants, pubs, bars, cafes and schools – offering anything from a simple coffee machine, to a £200,000+ restaurant kitchen installation and fit-out, complete with CAD (computer aided drawing) drawings and full project management. Being a “one-stop-shop” has huge benefits for the client; full refurbishment projects can be undertaken, as well as, air conditioning installation and supply of all catering equipment. The whole Chiller Box team, enjoyed the glittering Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner, at the Landmark Hotel in Marylebone, which had a double significance to Marios, since it was where he also proposed to his wife a few years ago. The IoD is a prestigious professional body, which seeks to promote and

recognise the most talented directors and business leaders. The Director of the Year awards are based on a multitude of stringent criteria, such as, performance, leadership, ethical values, resilience and vision. Marios fought off around 250 applicants to win this award. Marios had in fact been nominated in two categories, also being up for “Young Director of the Year”. Nerves set in a little after the first announcement, but the team were confident and rose to their feet to cheer and congratulate him when he was announced winner of “Director of the Year” in his category. The event was hosted by Emma Crosby (TV presenter of Channel Five News) and Gyles Brandreth won the hearts of the crowd with his cheeky and entertaining Keynote speech peppered with anecdotes of his time as a former MP. In addressing the nominated Directors, he made particular reference to their strength, determination, passion and commitment towards turning the economy around. He also likened the general

atmosphere of the event and relationships between team members, to that of a close family, as opposed to a business networking event sentiments truly seconded by all at Chiller Box. The black tie gala dinner was a very memorable occasion for the whole Chiller Box team, the majority of which are Enfield residents - Marios Poumpouris (MD), Michael Michael (Operations Director), Corina Darnborough (Online Marketing Manager), Anna Zemenides (Accounts), David Scourfield (Kitchen Design Consultant), Nick Protopapas (Sales Admin) and John Yiangou (Estimator - not pictured). Marios has always advocated a strong team bond and happy staff are key drivers towards business success. He was very proud to have every single one of his team by his side and was quick to publicly commend their efforts both individually, and as a whole. Www.chilerbox.com - 0800 849 1188

whilst most uk funds returned negative growth last year neil woodford, invesco perpetuals leading fund manager, led the way recording 9% growth for the 12 months to 1st January 2012. Historically British insurance companies offered very little choice to their customers. Most ran second rate investment funds run by unknown fund managers investing in ill managed equity and property funds. these days it is possible to choose from the top investment fund managers when creating individual portfolios be it a pension or a stocks & shares isa. investment houses such as invesco perpetual, fidelity & M&g have brought a breath of fresh air to stale investment portfolios.

Make your isa work for you!

as well as reviewing existing equity funds with interest rates at historic lows and inflation running high savers are effectively losing money held in cash isa’s. it is therefore worth considering an isa transfer into a stocks and shares isa. investing in a stocks and shares isa doesn’t mean that you have to invest entirely or indeed at all into equities. for the cautious investor it is worth considering corporate bond and gilt funds. one of the most consistent corporate bond funds is the M&g corporate bond fund. This fund has achieved a return of 43.2% over five years, outperforming its comparative sector, the iMa corporate Bond sector, by 19.3%. corporate bonds are a good alternative to cash they offer the potential for both greater growth and income than from cash deposits, and a smoother return path than equities. it is also worth considering transferring existing isa holdings onto a platform as this allows easy switching at minimal cost as most existing isa’s can be switched by way of an inspecie transfer at no cost!

Bring your pension Back to life!

the introduction of new funds from professional fund managers can also help to rejuvenate pension portfolios. in many households lying around in boxes and plastic bags are pension schemes taken out with insurance companies and employers long gone to the grave. Many insurers faced the same fate of the banks in the late 90’s. Household names such as ‘allied Dunbar,’ ‘royal sun alliance,’ and ‘guardian assurance’ were forced out of the pension arena to make way for a smaller number of profitable insurers. Isn’t it time you reviewed your pension?

The Queens Jubilee

The Diamond Jubilee

Whether or not you are a fan of the Royal Family, there is no escaping the fact that this is the year, HM Queen Elizabeth II, celebrates her diamond jubilee. The Jubilee Weekend, features an extra Bank Holiday for the Diamond Jubilee, with the late May Bank Holiday moved one week later, thereby making a 4-day long weekend. The main programme of events are as follows: Saturday 2nd June, 2012 The Queen will attend the Epsom Derby. Sunday 3rd June, 2012 The Big Jubilee Lunch: Building on the already popular Big Lunch initiative, people will be encouraged to share lunch with neighbours and friends, as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. This may take the form of a traditional street party or a picnic lunch in small or larger groups. This event is being organised by the Big Lunch. The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant: This event will take place on the Thames and consist of up to 1,000 boats assembled from across the UK, the Commonwealth and around the world. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will travel in the Royal Barge which will form the centrepiece of the flotilla. Monday 4th June, 2012 BBC Concert at Buckingham Palace: There will be a televised Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, with tickets being available to UK residents by public ballot. The

22

musical programme for the concert is still being planned and is expected to feature British and Commonwealth musicians. Details on how to apply for the concert will be available in due course. This event is being organised by the BBC.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons: A network of 2,012 Beacons will be lit by communities and individuals throughout the United Kingdom, as well as the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Commonwealth. As in 2002, The Queen will light the National Beacon. Tuesday 5th June, 2012 The Diamond Jubilee weekend will culminate with a day of celebrations in central London, including a service at St Paul’s Cathedral, followed by two receptions, a lunch at Westminster Hall, a Carriage Procession to Buckingham Palace and finally a Balcony appearance and Flypast. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, and many Members of The Royal Family, will attend the National Service of Thanksgiving to Celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, at St Paul’s Cathedral on the morning of Tuesday 5th June. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, will then attend a short reception at Mansion House. Other Members of The Royal Family will attend a reception at Guildhall. These receptions are for those taking part in the Service of Thanksgiving and members of the congregation. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, will drive from Mansion House to Westminster Hall to attend a Diamond Jubilee lunch, to be given for The Queen by the Livery. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales will also attend this lunch.

EN Magazine May 2012

A small number of representatives from sponsoring livery companies will be present at the lunch, with the vast majority of the guest list of approximately 700 comprising people from all over the country, whose trade, craft or profession is represented by one of the many different liveries taking part in the event, together with the charities, schools and other organizations they support. The National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, will perform a programme of music at the lunch.

Following the lunch, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales, will depart the Palace of Westminster for Buckingham Palace, travelling along a Processional Route by Carriage. The Queen and Prince Philip will be using

the 1902 State Landau in this procession. There will be personnel from all three military services lining the streets for the procession, military bands along the route, and the procession will be accompanied by the Sovereign’s Escort. The King’s Troop will fire a 60 gun salute during the carriage procession. There will be a Guard of Honour present in the Forecourt of Buckingham Palace. Shortly after their arrival, The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, and other Members of The Royal Family will appear on the Balcony, at which point there will be an RAF Flypast and a Feu de Joie (“Fire of Joy” – a celebratory cascade of rifle fire given as a salute by The Queen’s Guard) from the Forecourt.

The Queens Jubilee Although there are many organized events taking place through out the country one traditional way that local people celebrate Royal occasions, is with a street party. Street Parties are a particularly British tradition that have for a century been linked with Royal and other national events. By ‘street party’ we mean organized by and for residents, as a private event, probably without money, insurance or licence, and not a public event with wider publicity and needing money.

Anyone can attend External publicity (such as in newspapers and magazines) Licence usually needed Insurance needed Risk assessment common Professional/skilled organisers Organizing small, private street parties and fetes is very simple and generally does not include activities that need a licence, such as selling alcohol or providing certain types of entertainment. If you want to have a pay bar or intend

to provide entertainment to the wider public, or charge to raise money for your event, you will need a Temporary Event Notice, which is a type of temporary licence and costs £21. Similarly, larger public events attracting more people, will require a different process. If you need a Temporary Events Notice or would like to hold a larger public event, contact your council for further information and advice. The number one tip for

holding a party is to plan early, think about what you want to achieve and get in touch with your council at least 4-6 weeks in advance. Permission should be sought from the Council, with as much notice as possible. For further information visit www.streetparty.org. uk , www.communities.gov. uk/publications/communities/ streetpartyguide or your local council website.

Street parties as we know them, as popular resident events in their own streets, seem to have started in 1919. They were held in July as ‘Peace Teas’ as a genuine celebration of the signing earlier in June of the Versailles peace treaty after the First World War. They centred round a special treat for children in those times of hardship and were quite formal sit down affairs. If organizing your party to celebrate The Queens Diamond Jubille, be aware that this may be an emotive subject for some people and there will be a range of views amongst neighbours. So that you can have a fun and civil day together, we suggest that you discuss this sensitively but don’t let a few with strong opinions, positive or negative, stop you from having a great event. It is not worth arguing over the colour of the red, white, blue, green or yellow bunting. The sort of street parties and fetes that groups of residents get together to arrange for their neighbours can vary. The main differences between a small street party and fetes and larger public events are: Street parties and fetes: For residents/neighbours only Publicity only to residents No licences normally necessary if music incidental and no selling is involved No formal risk assessment needed Self-organised Larger public events:

SHOWTIME Much Ado About Wenlock Millfield Theatre

Tuesday 29th & Wednesday 30th May, 8pm Tickets: £12, £10 concs Online: £11, £9 concs In 1850, the Shropshire market town of Much Wenlock hosted its very own ‘Olympian Games’, which was to become an inspiration for the modern Games. Behind this seemingly mild-mannered event, where country sports combined with spelling and knitting races, lay a modern day struggle for equality and the right to health, set during the changing world of the Industrial Revolution. In a captivatingly comic production that celebrates the Games’ unlikely UK roots, Much Ado About Wenlock reveals a local doctor’s determination to improve the health of all the townsfolk, rich or poor. Will Dr Penny Brookes inspire the workingmen to swap their tipple for triple jumping? Will Beatty the

schoolmistress win over the cynical Reverend Benedict Wayne? Will little Eddie Sankey triumph over the bullying butcher’s boy, Archibald Blockley?

Angie Le Mar: In My Shoes Written & Performed by: Angie Le Mar Millfield Theatre 9th May – 20th May 2012 Tickets £15 Online £14

Tony Stockwell An Evening of Psychic Mediumship Wyllyotts Theatre, Potters Bar – Friday 18th May 2012 One of the country’s most well known and respected mediums, Tony Stockwell, Sensitive and Inspirational. Giving a voice to those in the unseen world without voices.

Following the celebrated success of its Off-West End premiere run, the limitless Angie Le Mar, television and radio personality, actress, writer and renowned Stand-up Comedienne, is back with her new comedy hit show: In My Shoes. In My Shoes, is inspired by her groundbreaking comedy creations in Funny Black Women on the Edge, razor sharp scripts in her sell out plays, The Brothers and Forty, and the insightful comic observations from her 25 years Stand-Up career. In My Shoes, transports the audience straight to comedy’s edge and sees Angie Le Mar at her anarchic best. Angie plays homage to the great Whoopie Goldberg’s comedic ability to extend and expand the form of solo stand-up performance. She creates topical characters without stereo-type. She tackles contemporary issues, which are relevant to the supportive audiences, who have loyally followed her insightful social commentary, through countless standup performances, ground

breaking theatre productions and zeitgeist radio journalism. In My Shoes, charts the perils and fortunes of six distinct, yet intricately woven individuals: Charmaine Lawrence: a contradicted career lifestyle guru, spiritual sister and author; Dupre McKenzie: an OCD ex-offender, whose heart is burdened by his victim’s spirit; single ladies’ awkward truths are revealed by high flying city exec Valerie Simpson; job seeking Rebecca Star has a bonanza way out, but she still wants to do it her own way; Samantha Hyde: a jaded actress holding onto the past and.....the return of Funny Black Women’s star US soul diva - Falushilah Falashilay

The Rat Pack Sun 24th June 7.30pm Tickets: £18, £17 concs START spreading the news . . . according to Nancy Sinatra; the daughter of Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra tribute act David Alacey’s rendition of New York, New York is “far too close for comfort”. Add to this fact that a very close friend of

Psychic Medium Tony Stockwell, is not a new kid on the block. During his 20 years working as a medium he has constantly striven to improve his game and push the boundaries of his communication with those who have passed to the other side. In that time he has had umpteen television programmes, taught at some of the most respected schools for mediumistic development, as well as setting up his own training school for developing mediums. On the 18th May 2012, Tony will be appearing at Wyllyotts Theatre, Potters Ba,r bringing messages of comfort to those who need to hear and understand that a friend, loved one or someone they cared about still exists. This he does to a breathtaking degree in his truly remarkable show. Often working with photographs or objects, Tony uses his extraordinary paranormal abilities to communicate amazingly accurate messages. Recent legislative guidelines, suggest that any Evening of Clairvoyance should be billed

Frank Sinatra’s, Buddy Greco has commented This guy really is Frank” what better testimonials can you get than the daughter and one of Sinatra’s closest friends, it does not get better than that! Direct from London’s Leicester Square Theatre, The 02 Arena and a Royal Command Performance, the original British tribute to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr, brings the style and excitement of Las Vegas to vivid life.

‘for entertainment purposes’. Tony certainly uses his natural wit, showmanship and Cockney charisma to entertain but more important, Mediumship has the potential to change someone’s life and instil in them a sense of peace, comfort and purpose. For those who do not receive a message, the use of a big screen allows the audience to become deeply involved in the entire process taking them with him on a spiritual and emotional roller coaster, which would force the most hardened of cynics to rethink their views on the afterlife. Tony hopes that through his current work he will make others aware that there’s something more than just our current lives.
