reas of Potters Bar will be cleaned up following an operation by Hertsmere Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. Council, fire and police officers joined forces at an Environmental Action Day (EAD) on Wednesday, 14th April, and a Spotlight event on the following Friday. The aim of an EAD is for relevant organisations to identify environmental issues such as graffiti and flytipping by walking around a particular area. Spotlight events, which involve the same organisations setting up a mobile police station in the area, take place soon after an EAD to give a visible presence in the community so that residents can talk to officers face-to-face about any concerns they have. During the EAD, graffiti was identified in Mutton Lane, Hunters Close and Willow Way. Flytipping was also found in Mutton Lane as well as Dove Lane and Hayes Avenue. In addition, a number of shopping trollies were found along the way which Tesco has agreed to collect.

was organised so relevant officers from the CDRP could see firsthand what needs to be addressed in the community. The issues we found have been reported to the responsible organisation to deal with. “Around 50 local people came to the Spotlight event in Oakmere Park car park and received advice and information on community safety and crime prevention. They also gave their views on what the police should concentrate on in Potters Bar. A number of children came along too who were given a tour of a fire engine.” If you have any community safety concerns please contact Hertsmere Borough Council on 020 8207 7801, email partnership.support@ hertsmere.gov.uk or why not go along to the next Potters Bar Crime Reduction Group meeting which takes place on 20 May at 7pm at The Wyllyotts Centre, Drakes Lane. Meetings take place four times a year and are open to all residents and businesses in the town.

The team will be going to the Mawanda Primary

Many of the children attending the school complain of respiratory problems caused by inhaling

As these photos show the classroom floor is dirt and there are no windows, lighting etc. As for the kitchen this word only loosely describes it – yes if the floor is an ideal cooking area! I am only glad I have not received an image of what the current toilet facilities are - I guess I’ll have that moment to look forward to when we go out there. This could truly be Drapemasters’ most challenging interior design job yet!” The volunteers need to raise £2,200 each to help with funding for the project, and are putting on a range of local fundraising events including: 9th May – Funky Casino Night straight from Las Vegas to Winchmore Hill at the Willow

Little Legs for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK

N

ew to North London is Little Legs for Life - a kids’ version of the Cancer Research UK Race for Life. Many young lives are touched by cancer, and so at 2pm on Sunday May 23rd 2010, 200 children aged from birth to 11 years will run, jog, walk, toddle or even ride in a buggy or baby sling around the playing fields of Broomfield Park, Palmers Green to raise money for this fantastic charity. The Mayor of Enfield will start the race, and a picnic and play time will follow. The entry fee is £3, preregistration is essential, and spaces are limited. Once registered, entrants will receive a race pack with a sponsor form to raise as much money as possible. All participants will receive a medal, certificate and goody bag. Children will set their own distance target.

More than one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives. Many of us have lost someone to it. We all want cures to be found. Cancer Research UK is the leading independent funder of cancer research in Europe, and, surprisingly, is almost entirely funded by the public. Without the generosity and dedication of supporters they would not be able to continue making the progress against cancer which has seen survival rates double in the last 30 years. Many of the children are running in memory of a loved one. The Most Used Room In Your Home I

n your home, the room that you spend the most time in but often do not realise is your bedrooms. Admittedly the majority of this time may be whilst you are asleep but it is the first room that you see when you wake up, so having a nice, comfortable and practical room to wake up in, can help to start your day off right. Obviously having a comfortable bed is allimportant, however the choice of bedroom furniture can make all the difference. EN Magazine went along to speak to James Allen the proprietor of James Allen Bedrooms, who have showrooms in both Enfield Town and Crews Hill. They have been established for over 20 years, so when we wanted to find out what makes a ‘good’ bedroom we went to them for advice.

“When planning a bedroom you need to decide if you want stand alone furniture or a fitted bedroom; we can offer a large selection of both” “If it is a fitted bedroom Sarah Jones or myself, always go out to meet the client to carry out a site visit and discuss what the

Through experience, Sarah and I have found that we can create designs that match the needs of our clients. We are usually able to point out solutions that will work. T

he UK’s Most Prestigious Business Award Conferred Upon Metaswitch Networks for the Innovation of its MetaSphere Application Server Local company Metaswitch Networks, a leading provider of carrier systems and communications software solutions, is one of a

select group of recipients of the 2010 Queen’s Award for Enterprise. This is the fourth Queen’s Award achieved by Metaswitch during its 29 year history and has been granted for the “continuous innovation and development” as well as the commercial success of its MetaSphere application server.

Metaswitch, based in Enfield Town, was formally known as Data Connection. They are a leading global provider of the technologies and solutions that are powering the migration of communications networks to open, next-generation architectures. Hundreds of network operators worldwide depend on its reliable, scalable carrier systems solutions. While its

high performance, software technologies are licensed by all the world’s leading communications equipment manufacturers. “Our commitment to high standards is a hallmark of our success, and our strength in achieving innovation after innovation sets us apart from our global competition. New safety partnership launched

H

ertsmere Community Safety Partnership (CSP) is the new name for the borough’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP). The partnership still comprises Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertfordshire Constabulary, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and other organisations and will continue to work to keep Hertsmere a safe place to live. When partnerships between local councils, police and other organisations were first officially launched under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, individual partnerships could choose to be called a CDRP or a CSP. However, new guidance from the Home Office encourages the use of the term CSP. Valerie Kane, Hertsmere Borough Council’s Community Safety Officer, explained: “The term CSP is more widely used in Hertfordshire so it makes sense for us to use it too for consistency across the county. “Crime is relatively low in Hertsmere and overall it is steadily falling and we will continue to work in partnership to keep the borough a safe place to live, work and visit.” Last year the partnership initiated and got involved with a number of projects including: * Dog Watch and Off Watch schemes, which are similar to Neighbourhood Watch, and a Horse Watch is due to be launched in May * working with pupils to discourage drivers from speeding

Local News and Events

outside schools * Environmental Action Days, Spotlight events and visual audits which tackle environmental crimes such as graffiti and flytipping * community payback whereby local offenders carry out tasks to improve the local area such as litter picking and removing flytips * PL8 SAF3 events which resulted in 400 vehicles being fitted with theft-resistant number plate screws. Hertsmere’s Crime Reduction Groups (CRGs) will also be renamed Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs). These groups are open to any local resident or interested party. Public meetings take place four times a year in each local area and topics include anti-social behaviour, local crime figures, fire safety and issues of local concern. Each group is allocated £1,000 a year to spend on projects that reduce crime and improve community safety in that area. Valerie Kane added: “Local CSPs are an opportunity for people to get involved and make a difference in their local area so please come along, we welcome your views and support.” The CSP organises lots of events and projects throughout the year to help reduce crime and make people feel safer - to find out more contact Hertsmere Borough Council on 020 8207 7801 or email partnership. support@hertsmere.gov.uk

Music festivals Britain’s top 10 S

hakespere said “If music be the food of love , play on.”

Well if music is your love then the idea of sitting in a field, often wading through mud is probably something that your looking forward to. With the summer festival season almost underway, it’s time to pack the tent, put on your denim shorts and wellies and MAKE SOME NOOOOISE! In association with Visit Britain EN Magazine checks out this year’s top 10 music festivals in Britain - the home of the summer music festival. Glastonbury Festival When: 24th-28th June Where: Glastonbury, Somerset Why: Glastonbury is the Mac Daddy of music festivals, the Big Cheese, Il Supremo, the Head Honcho… (sorry, we’ll stop now), but Glastonbury really is the big one. As well as an unbeatable line-up of acts including Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Blur, Lily Allen and The Prodigy, there’s around 2,000 performances at 50 venues, including music, cabaret, theatre, circus, a fantastic

kids’ area, poetry, green crafts and lots more. Web: www.glastonburyfestivals. co.uk T in the Park When: 10th-12th July Where: Near Kinross, Scotland Why: In true Scottish style, this is the summer festival that shows the rest of Britain how to have a good time - the nosiest, craziest, jumping-around-onshoulders-wildest festival in the country. Now in its 15th year, T in the Park is Scotland’s major summer music festival. As well as the music from the likes of Razorlight, Pet Shop Boys, Lady GaGa The Killers, Blur and Bloc Party, there’s a fantastic fairground, delicious organic food and drink and numerous stalls and bars. Web: www.tinthepark.com O2 Wireless Festival When: 4th-5th July Where: Hyde Park London Why: The O2 Wireless Festival is the coolest music festivals in London. Held over 2 days in London’s Hyde Park, it plays host to some of the best bands, artists and DJs around. This year’s Wireless has a rum-’n’-raisin flavour with

two distinct sounds over the 2 days. The likes of The Streets and Paul Oakenfold join the mighty Basement Jaxx to give the Saturday more of a dance vibe, while Kanye West, Flo Rida and Young Jeezy inject some fresh hip-hop beats into the Sunday. Web: www.wirelessfestival.co.uk Wakestock When: 10th-12th July Where: Pwllheli, Gwynedd, North Wales Why: Relentless Wakestock adds a completely new dimension to the rollingaround-in-mud-listening-to-bands formula we know and love. Wakestock adds wakeboarding into the mix to bring you a weekend of high-octane music and excitement. What started as a party in a car park after a wakeboard contest, has grown into one of the coolest music festivals in Europe playing host of top bands such as Moby, N*E*R*D and Dizzee Rascal, along with the biggest wakeboard competition in Europe. Web: www.wakestock.co.uk The Eden Sessions When: July-August (various dates) Where: St Austell, Cornwall Why: Set inside the Eden Project, the world’s largest glass-domed ‘global garden’, Eden Sessions offer a festival experience like no other. You’ll get world class artists such as Paul Weller, The Kooks and Kasabian, in a venue dubbed the 8th Wonder of the World. Jarvis Cocker described Eden Sessions as “no mud, no pushy sponsors, no dodgy burgers, just lots of greenery”. Web: www.edenproject.com The Big Chill When: 6th-9th August Where:Eastnor Deer Park, Herefordshire Why: The Big Chill started life 15 years ago as a series of parties in London. Today it’s become one of the country’s most impressive summer festivals set in the sweeping backdrop of the Malvern Hills. Known for its striking visual displays and New Age character boasting on-site masseurs, alternative therapists and 19

Web: www.bigchill.net V Festival When: 22nd-23rd August Where: Chelmsford and Staffordshire Why: The V festival attracts the big name acts from around the world such as Fatboy Slim, Oasis and Natalie Imbruglia, as well as acts that don’t usually do the summer festival circuit. The event happens across 2 jaw-dropping historic venues; Weston Park with its stunning 17th-century stately home and a 1000acre parkland, and Hylands Park which boasts a neo-classical Grade 2* listed house set in 570 acres of parkland including ancient woods, pleasure gardens and a serpentine lake. How’s

that for music meets heritage?! Web: www.vfestival.com Leeds and Reading Festival When: 28th-30th August Where: Leeds, West Yorkshire / Reading BerkshireWhy: Leeds and Reading Festival is Britain’s leading rock, alternative and indie festival and believe it or not, one of the oldest music festivals in the world with a head-banging history going right back to 1961. Held simultaneously across 2 locations, the outstanding line-up dash frantically between venues so you get the same top-notch artists such as Radiohead, Kings of Leon and Kaiser Chiefs, no matter which of the 2 festivals you rock up to. Planning Your Health and Wealth for Today and Tomorrow T

he UK population is living longer, and the strain on both the government and individual’s investments and financial plans for the future are being stretched. It is not only the financial situation that causes concern for many people but the additional burdens on the National Health Service and Social Services in looking after the elderly. Many people reaching retirement age are finding that the state pensions, personnel pensions and investments they have worked for are not delivering the returns they were hoping for in their retirement. So what steps can you take to plan for the future, to make sure that you are able to earn and what can you do if things go wrong. The first thing is planning for the future a rough guide is that you need to have an pension pot that is 20 times what you are hoping your annul income will be. So for example if you would like an annual income of £20,000 a year in retirement you would need a pension pot of around £400,000. EN Magazine spoke to Independent Financial Adviser Noel Sainsbury of Archers Financial Services. Noel has over 20 years experience and has advised thousands of local residents since setting up in Enfield in 1991. “This recession has effected a far greater cross section of the community than that of 1991 it is not only home owners who have struggled to repay their mortgages because of reduced working hours or redundancy but elderly

pensioners who worked for years to create nest eggs to see them through their twilight years are struggling on the meagre interest they are receiving from their savings.” “We have been approached by a number of elderly savers who historically sought no risk and fed off the interest from bank and building society accounts to supplement pensions, that are often meagre in size.

was clearly not keeping pace with inflation.” “Many of these clients are now spreading their savings across other asset classes such as ‘gilts and equities’. A typical cautious elderly investor is now investing as much as 25% of their savings in equities with a similar percentage in ‘gilts and corporate bonds.”

“Today with the base rate at 0.5% many savers are receiving virtually no interest on their savings. Archers were recently approached by an elderly client who was receiving 0.15% on her £50,000 deposited with the Abbey (50 + savings account with the Abbey, savings of £100,000 - £199,000 currently paying 0.15%!) After tax of 20% the client was receiving approximately £60 per annum in interest, which 23

Finance make good investments that will give you the returns that your looking for. But what would you do if you suddenly found yourself or a loved one unable to work and in need of care. This is where Health Insurance and Critical Illness Cover can save you from further stress and financial hardship. We spoke to John Crisford of Sherwood Healthcare who arrange policies across the whole health insurance market to find out what cover you should look for and what it actually covers. “Such a portfolio has allowed savers to enjoy some growth as well as taking an income. With interest rates set to remain low over the next couple of years we would recommend that investors consider such moves.”

“Apart from what the government tell us you could wait up to significant period for a non-urgent operation under the NHS Scheme and may think of going “private”. Under private schemes, you can be operated on within hours or days and have nursing care at home whilst you recuperate. Additionally, if you carry Income Protection and Private Medical Insurance, your income will be protected for up to a year, for a prolonged illness or medical condition that prevents you working. Critical Illness Insurance would cover you if permanently incapacitated.” “Whichever plan you choose, it is likely that your premiums will rise above the rate of general inflation. This is because of factors that affect how healthcare is provided in all western economies, such as the costs of development of new medicines and treatments.” “The number and sophistication of treatments to improve quality of life is

The way to make sure that you are going to be able to meet the financial needs in your retirement is to earn as much as possible and where possible

“Private Medical Insurance is designed to cover the costs of private medical treatment for short-term illnesses or injuries – commonly known as acute conditions. Most people buy this type of insurance to gain the reassurance of knowing that treatment is available promptly, should they become ill or injured. As a private patient you can usually choose where and when your treatment is to take place, the specialist who treats you and the hospital. You will

usually have a private room with en-suite facilities, complete with TV, telephone and the freedom to entertain your visitors at all reasonable times.”

Finance increasing steadily. Most Private Medical Insurance policies aim to cover these treatments as they become established medical practice and available privately.” “Likewise, the sophistication and complexity of tests and scans used to diagnose illness and injury is also increasing. Such tests are becoming far more widely available in private hospitals – for example, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans that costs around £500 each.” “As people get older they are more likely to need and receive medical treatment, which means that Private Medical Insurance premiums will increase with age to reflect this. No matter what age you or your family are Private Healthcare Insurance can give you reassurance and peace of mind if you do have health problems. Although age and medical conditions will effect the insurance premiums don’t let that deter you. I have recently managed to arrange cover for clients in their 80’s who wanted the peace of mind to know they would get the care and treatment they needed as soon as possible.” Unfortunately no matter what plans we make, things can sometimes go wrong and people of all ages and financial positions can often find themselves having to turn to social services or support agencies to fill the gap in their care requirements. The traditional systems of social services, social care and NHS support that people have traditional relied on in old age and when unable to work have been going through dramatic changes. The old system of putting people that cannot cope into care homes or hospital has been revitalized. Under new government initiatives, the system now plans to give people the responsibility for their own care, allowing them to keep their independence and where possible stay in their own home. EN Magazine spoke to Andrew Bone of New Directions Care and support Services, a local Enfield company that is helping people to take both care and financial responsibility for themselves. “Many people who have difficulty coping with every day activities of daily living due to disabilities or significant physical or mental frailty used to have no option but to go into hospital or a care

home. However with changes in support available in the community it is the majority who are able to stay at home and indeed regain some level of their independence and control over their life. An example of this would be an older person who could not walk or transfer from a chair or bed and who may have a level of confusion Under the old system they would have been placed into full time care that is extremely expensive and takes away their independence. Under the new system known as “personalization” rather than be taken into care the local social services assess the persons needs and will then give the person or a representative a budget to employ an organization like New Directions to send round fully trained and vetted careers to help clients to maintain an independent lifestyle.” “New Directions help people with every aspect of their lives from daily visits to support 24 hours a day. . One of our clients who is confined to a wheelchair used to live in a residential home and suffered from depression. With our help he now lives in his own home in Enfield and although he still has full time care he is able to get out and about, in fact last year we were able to take him on a cruise around the Mediterranean. Gardening

What to do in your garden in early summer seedlings. We’ll be sticking with spring sowings in the future as they are less trouble to look after!

I

’m writing this in mid-April, after a busy week both in the gardens at Capel Manor and on my allotment. Some warm days have really go the plants moving: we’ve got amazing displays of daffodils and tulips, and the cherry blossom and camellias by the ruined temple at Capel Manor are looking superb. It is important to remove the dead flowers from your daffodils and tulips once they have finished flowering so that the plants’ energy goes back into building up the bulbs for next year’s flowers rather than producing seeds. Leave the foliage to die down naturally for at least 6 weeks after flowering to build the bulbs up.

Hardy annuals can be direct-sown now that the soil has warmed up sufficiently for the seeds to germinate. It is important to ensure that the flower bed or container you use is free from weeds. A good technique, which works just as well for a vegetable bed on an allotment, is the Stale Seed Bed. Remove any large weeds, rake the soil level and water well. Ideally cover the area with horticultural fleece to increase the temperature and make the weed seeds germinate. After a week you can either hoe the weeds off or preferably use a weedkiller such as Roundup or a fastacting one such as Weedol. If you repeat the process the bed should stay clear of weeds for the summer so long as you don’t start digging it over and bringing more seeds to the surface to germinate. Mark the edges of the areas you want to sow into with sand, and broadcast the seed over the soil, lightly raking it over to cover the seeds. Water if the soil is dry. Some of the hardy annuals we are directsowing in the Walled Garden at Capel include Ageratum, Cosmos, Larkspur, Lupins and Nigella. On to some jobs to do in your garden over the next couple of months. Don’t forget to keep a look-out for pests and diseases in your garden: despite the cold winter there seems to have been little reduction in pest numbers or types, so that’s another myth dispelled. Probably the most damage has been done to useful

Our sweet pea plants will be planted out this week on their wig-wams in Capel’s Walled Garden, as they are hardy plants. They should make a stunning display in a wide range of colours. People often recommend sowing sweet pea seeds in autumn and overwintering them in cold frames: we have tried both autumn and spring sowings this year and the spring batch look a lot healthier and will soon overtake the autumn-sown 26

predators such as insectivorous birds (eg wrens) which couldn’t find food when the snow covered the ground. We have already seen Rosemary Beetle, Aphids,

and Vine Weevil grubs in pots that were frozen solid for many weeks. Slugs and snails are active and especially enjoy hostas and tender seedlings (it’s funny how they never seem to like weed seedlings, isn’t it?). We’ve had good results using the new wildlife-friendly slug pellets. There is still time to feed your lawn with a spring top-dressing to get it to green up, and any bare patches can be either repaired with turf or sown with grass seed. Remember to keep new turf or grass seed watered until it has settled in. We’re cutting the lawns at Capel weekly now, and have re-edged the lawn areas to true them up. Over the years the edges can wander from off from straight and using taught garden line in conjunction with an edging iron and board will really smarten a garden up. Lawn weeds can be controlled using a selective herbicide available from garden centres: do follow the instructions carefully though or you can damage the grass as well as the weeds. An alternative is to remove them using a daisy grubber or hand trowel. Onto the kitchen garden! Fig trees need pruning in April but watch their sap as it is an irritant. Strawberries can be planted out in their beds: use cloches to give an early crop. Watch out for aphids on fruit (they can transmit diseases to the plant) and sawfly grubs on gooseberries as they can quickly defoliate a bush. Either pick the grubs off or use an insecticide such as pyrethrum. It’s also time to start sowing crops such as beetroot, carrots, leeks and parsnips directly in the ground, although if you have a severe problem with slugs

Gardening

then beetroot can be started in trays and transplanted as small seedlings, and leeks can be started in pots or a seed bed ready for transplanting when they are pencil thickness. Cabbages and other brassicas are best started in cells then transplanted to avoid pest damage. When you plant them out you will need to cover them with netting if there are pigeons in your area, as they will leave you with just the stalks otherwise. Leaf beet or swiss chard is well worth growing and seems to be pest-free.

If you planted potatoes (and there is still time to do this – they will just crop a little later) then the first shoots will soon emerge from the soil. Earth them up by gently drawing soil over the shoots to protect them from frost and increase your yield. Salad crops are often

expensive: they are worth growing in pots in the garden and last year I used the “cut and come again” system for lettuce. Once the lettuce plant reaches a reasonable size then you can either remove the outer leaves every couple of days, or just cut the plant off at an inch or so above soil level. It will grow back

several times over the summer, so 6 or more plants will keep you in lettuce over the summer. Our new asparagus plants are growing well in the Walled Garden, and the rhubarb is looking good. I have been enjoying both from my allotment this weekend! Happy gardening! Mr Arthur Fallowfield Capel Manor Gardens, Bullemoor Lane, Enfield EN1 4RQ www.capelmanorgardens.co.uk 08456 122 122

Did you know … If your growing space is a garden, allotment, window box or patio pot, using compost to feed and condition the soil could make your flower bed or fruit and vegetable patch flourish. LondonWaste EcoPark produces nutrient-rich compost made from recycled garden and kitchen waste collected from Enfield households. The EcoPark uses Recycling, Composting and Energy Centres to manage waste and recyclables for North London. Our Energy Centre provides enough electricity to power 66,000 homes every year.
