With the housing market still fairly flat many people are looking at doing home improvements rather than moving. Chase Farm decision questioned by Enfield Health Panel
The news that Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has decided to close Chase Farm Hospital’s A&E and maternity units has been condemned by the Chair of Enfield Council’s Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Panel, Cllr Alev Cazimoglu. Cllr Cazimoglu said “Like the majority of local residents I am stunned and saddened by the decision made by Andrew Lansley to close A&E and maternity at Chase Farm and allow the hospital to be taken over by the North Middlesex Hospital, this is a continuation of broken promises made by both Mr Lansley and David Cameron.
“They have ignored the views of local people and elected representatives in Enfield, and their decision will have devastating consequences for health services in this borough.
The Council has worked extremely hard to save Chase Farm by looking at every possible alternative; we moved heaven and earth to put a viable proposal to Mr Lansley, for him then to ignore it.” There are fears that primary care in Enfield is underfunded to the tune of £70million and that the North Middlesex Hospital will not be able to cope with the influx of extra patients from Chase Farm because there is no effective way of providing non emergency medical care in the borough. In addition, the Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Panel is extremely worried about the North Middlesex Hospital’s ability to pay off its huge debts due to the massive cuts made by the Government to health services.
Local News and Events Cllr Cazimoglu continued: “Residents of Enfield have also been short changed by central Government funding, and there have been a number of abortive attempts to resolve the budget gap between what Enfield residents require and what is being made available. Simply put, the Government needs to provide the money for the health services that our residents need and deserve. “This is all the more urgent as the lack of resources makes it impossible to meet our request, which was also recommended by the Independent Review Panel, that primary care should be developed and seen to be working prior to any changes in hospital services.
With interest rates at historic lows and inflation currently running at 4.5% savers are effectively losing money held in cash ISA’s. It is therefore worth considering an ISA transfer into a stocks and shares ISA. Investing in a stocks and shares ISA doesn’t mean that you have to invest entirely or indeed at all into equities. For the cautious investor it is worth considering corporate bond and gilt funds. One of the most consistent corporate bond funds is the M&G Corporate bond fund. This fund has achieved a return of 36.2% over five years, outperforming its comparative sector, the IMA Corporate Bond Sector, by 16.9%. Corporate bonds are a good alternative to cash they offer the potential for both greater growth and income than from cash deposits, and a smoother return path than equities.
“Residents will pay dearly when they lose their maternity and A&E from Chase Farm, and the Council will continue to fight this ill thought out and disastrous decision.”
“A final blow to residents

Bringing pensions back to life In many households, lying around in boxes and plastic bags are pension schemes taken out with insurance companies and employers long gone to the grave. Many insurers faced the same fate as the banks in the late 90’s. Household names such as ‘Allied Dunbar’, ‘Royal Sun Alliance’, and ‘Guardian Assurance’ were forced out of the pension arena to make way for a smaller number of profitable insurers.

www.archersonline.co.uk Unfortunately many of these pension funds have not been reviewed for many years as the companies are no longer challenged to compete for new business. It is time to review these schemes and make the money work better. Many new schemes offer annual management charges (AMC) of less than 1% however some of the earlier providers charged AMC’s of over 4%. It may also be possible to access 25% of the fund now (for those over 55) whilst also making the residue fund (75%) work better for you by investing in better performing and often cheaper plans! Enfield has dropped planned Sunday parking charges until after Christmas in a bid to boost shoppers spending power and local businesses. Councillor Chris Bond, cabinet member for environment said the move was designed to help traders after set backs over the recent riots and fears over a double dip recession. He said: “Enfield traders are a resilient bunch but they were not helped by the mindless morons who rioted in the Town in the Summer and also the worrying fragile economic outlook. “This Council is here to help

The exhibition also takes a nostalgic look back to the very early days of cinema, when images flickered onto the silver screen in the early1890’s. You could say Enfield is doing its own quantitative easing to fend off any possibility of double dip recession in our local economy.”

It has been supported the ‘Stories of the World’ Arts Council project for the London Olympics and Paralympics.” The exhibition is free and open to the public from 7 October 2011 – 4 May 2012, Monday – Friday 11am – 4pm. When love is not enough! Adoption has changed so much in the last 50 years. Now days, rarely are babies relinquished by unmarried mothers for fear of social stigma. Today around 70% of children in care have been removed because of abuse and/or neglect and there are around 4,000 children across the UK who need adopting every year. Children in the 21st century who are waiting for adoption need families who can provide not only love, but strength and stability to help them overcome their early years’ traumas. This year’s National Adoption Week (31st October - 6th November 2011) is appealing to families who have the space in both their hearts and their homes for a child who needs a forever family. The campaign, which is run by the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF), is asking prospective parents to think about whether they could parent an older child, a sibling group, a child with disabilities or complex needs and other harder to place children. Although sometimes emotionally and physically challenging, the rewards of adopting a child from care are huge. Talk to any experienced adopter and they will tell you that they wouldn’t go back and change a thing. Kim, now in her late 40’s, describes her experience of adopting two sisters, aged three and five: “There was a degree of nervousness at first
as to ‘can we do it’, but as soon as we started the process we relaxed. Rather then the social worker judging our ability, it’s much more about self-assessment. For example, there were a lot of things that we hadn’t considered before we started the process, such as adopting a child with disabilities or exposure to physical abuse. The process provided enough time to fully explore our thoughts, and with the help of our social worker, we came to realise the kind of child we could be the best parents for” Kim also feels that adopting a sibling group has provided the children with an extra level of emotional security: “Many children in care have had a total lack of consistency. Our girls support each other and provide a consistency in each others lives. And when they came to us, rather than them join our family, we became a whole new family together.” For answers to many of your adoption questions, as well as real life adoption success stories, visit the National Adoption Week website at www.nationaladoptionweek. org.uk

October is Get Connected month in Hertsmere - so get ready to ‘do it online’!
Did you know you can pay your council tax, apply for housing benefit and report graffiti and fly-tipping through Hertsmere Council’s website, from the comfort of your own home? Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Communications Cllr Morris Bright said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to get in touch with us and access our services and much of this can be done via our website – it’s available 24 hours a day so residents can log on whenever it’s convenient for them.” The first week of October also coincided with National Customer Service week, 3 to 7 October, which aimed to raise
awareness of the importance of customer service. So during the whole month, Hertsmere Council’s customer service advisors will be happy to show residents who visit their offices how they could save time by accessing our services online. Get Connected month, forms part of a wider Customer Focus Project which aims to make the most of technology, to save time and money and provide residents with the right answers, the first time they contact Hertsmere Council. As a result, a number of enhancements have been made to how customers can contact and access services, including: • an automated switchboard • improvements to the council website so that online services and transactions are more userfriendly and easy to find • the introduction of bar codes
You can now keep up to date with local news and events at to council tax bills so payments can also be made at PayPoint terminals.

Cllr Morris Bright added: “The idea behind the overall project is to improve the customer experience. And because so many people are using the internet as part of their daily routine, we want them to know they can also use it to deal with the council if they wish. But for anyone without the internet, you can still get in touch in the usual ways - by phone, post or in person at one of our offices.” Get connected with Hertsmere Borough Council: ww.hertsmere.gov.uk www.twitter.com/hertsmerebc www.facebook.com/hertsmere web advert.indd 1

“We’re already home to some of the world’s largest corporations but improvements to the West Anglia Main Line would drive the regeneration of a massive part of the South East, significantly improving the rail infrastructure between London and Cambridge and help open the capital to the rest of the country.” Enfield is also home to one of
the UK’s largest sustainable development sites, Meridian Water, a new community of up to 5,000 homes and 3,000 jobs in the heart of North London. As well as playing a major part in regenerating Edmonton and surrounding areas, the £1.3 billion project aims to be completely carbon neutral, becoming one of the main hubs within the proposed North London Decentralised Energy Network. Over the last five years Enfield Council, in partnership with other Local Authorities, the Department for Transport, Network Rail, Stansted Airport Ltd, Passenger focus and Transport for London have been working together to deal with the lack of investment in rail infrastructure between London and Cambridge. The partnership says this has limited growth and regeneration and undermined the opportunity to develop some of the poorest parts of England. The four and a half mile length of track would allow passing services and completely reshape the rail network by allowing more trains to stop at local stations, provide more space for rail freight and enable quicker services from London and Cambridge to Stansted Airport kick starting the complete redevelopment of the commuter and business corridor.

The new Growing Places fund could help bring billions of pounds of investment and thousands of homes and jobs to Enfield says the council. Enfield Council estimates a £265 million investment to provide a third track between Tottenham to Enfield, on the West Anglia Main Line, and a turnaround facility at Brimsdown would bring 15,000 homes and 9,000 jobs to the borough securing more than £2 billion in investment.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Business and Regeneration, Cllr Del Goddard, said: “The key to a healthy and vibrant economy is a high quality, well trained workforce that can meet the needs of employers across the borough. “Our aim is to help people find work, raise their aspirations and standards or living and help lift some of our poorest families out of poverty.“
Enfield’s Local Economic Assessment has identified job opportunities in a number of areas including food and drink manufacturing and wholesale, logistics/distribution, construction, green and carbon reduction, retail and health and social care sectors. However Enfield has limited numbers of low skilled jobs, with most posts requiring skills or job related training which means better training needs to be provided by the Council in order to improve the likelihood of Enfield residents gaining employment in the borough. Community groups, businesses and the voluntary sector are being asked to apply for funding from London Councils by noon on October 31. For further information visit the Enfield Council website www. enfield.gov.uk
Help for Businesses Exporting from the EN Area Exporting Success is one of the European Regional Development programmes aimed at Small Medium Enterprises (SME’s) to raise awareness and assist them to benefit from selling their service and products in new markets outside the UK. The rationale behind the project is to help close the gap between big businesses and SME’s in the export market, as the lion share of the market remains in the hands of big businesses. Furthermore, the programme aims at challenging the traditional thinking that SME’s need to wait till they are big before embarking on exporting. All businesses that have been trading for over 1 year in Greater London are now eligible to benefit from the
programme. This programme offers FREE advice, guidance and handson support to business owners considering exporting or looking to explore new markets abroad. Developing Your International Potential, is a Solutions for Business Product, part financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Programme 2007-2013, securing £840,000 of European Union funding. The programme is delivered by North London Business. Test Drive
Meet a Car that drives sensibly but still puts a smile on your face! The BMW 1 Series was first launched in 2004 and for me it was car that stood out, as it did not follow the traditional similar styling of the 3 and 5 Series models. If any thing the 1 Series is the “marmite” of BMW cars, you either love it or hate it. I think it has always offered something different to similar cars in its class, the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. That was why I was excited to get the opportunity to test drive the new BMW 1 Series. The BMW 1 Series offers you the choice between the Sport specification and the Urban specification, with a range of petrol and diesel engines – I test drove the 116d Sport version. The new car is bigger, 83mm longer, 14mm wider and 30mm longer in the wheelbase and yet still has the distinctive front of the older 1 Series but overall a smoother out rounded look. Viewed in profile, the dynamic proportions of the new BMW 1 Series are even more apparent. The gently sloping roofline, sporty, angled rear window and flat side windows give the car the look of a coupe. The characteristic BMW driver focus, is apparent in
the displays and controls of the central instrument panel angled towards the driver. The additional length and width of the new model provides even more occupant space, the driver is ensconced in a sporty but comfortable environment, but rear-seat passengers also benefit from a further 20mm of legroom. BMW’s iDrive system is available as standard on cars with SE specification and above. Comprising of a controller on the centre console, favourites buttons and a freestanding, high-resolution 6.5 inch flatscreen monitor. This display is used for all information, entertainment, telecommunications and navigation functions, should you have satellite navigation be specified. The new BMW 1 Series focuses on driving performance and fuel efficiency with 3 or 4 driving settings controlled by the Drive Performance Control switch by the gear-lever, which allows you to alter the car’s behaviour. Settings include Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and on certain models, Sport Plus, which adjust the accelerator response, gearshift points of the automatic gearbox and the
feel of the optional variableratio Servotronic steering and adaptive suspension systems. In these days of ‘environmentally friendly’ driving the Eco Pro mode supports you in achieving a particularly efficient driving style. As soon as you select the consumption-friendly Eco Pro mode, using the Drive Performance Control, the intelligent system goes into action and – depending on your individual driving style – enables you to reduce fuel consumption. Eco Pro mode gears, everything towards maximum efficiency: accelerator pedal and gearbox parameters, as well as shift points are all optimized and the heating/ air-conditioning strategy is adapted intelligently. The Control Display indicates how the Eco Pro mode is actively reducing energy consumption, e.g. through Brake Energy Regeneration or the Auto StartStop function. What is more, Eco Pro tips on more efficient driving show information such as the optimum choice of gear at any point in time. Which saving potentials, are implemented is for you, the driver, to decide. Following the Eco Pro tips makes it possible to achieve a reduction in fuel
consumption of up to 20% according to BMW. The onboard computer shows you exactly how many additional miles you can now drive. At the other end of the scale is the Sports Plus mode – click into this and you feel an excitement as the car changes into something totally different. The performance, from acceleration, to the feel of the car through the steering wheels connection to the road, and with the removal of traction control, makes for a fully rewarding driving experience. All BMW 1 Series models with a manual transmission come with Optimum Shift Indicator immediately in the driver’s field of vision: it constantly calculates which gear is currently the most economical and advises the driver when to shift accordingly. When calculating, the system takes both the driving situation and engine load into account. So changing gear at the right moment can considerably reduce fuel consumption. Overall I really enjoyed driving the BMW 1 Series. The car is pratcial and spacious and with the Eco Pro mode, offers a very sensible modern driving style. However click to the Sport+ mode and I think you will find out why I had a big smile on my face at the end of the test drive! Holiday - Break
Escape the ‘Rat Race’ with a Peak break
‘With the pressure of everyday life, communing to and from work, running around after the kids and housework, wouldn’t it be nice to take some time out for yourself. EN Magazine meet up with Sarah Day who took the opportunity to do just that. It’s not every morning that breakfast is interrupted by a group of ducks waddling up to your kitchen door. Normally it’s the sound of a neighbours’ car alarm going off or a van thundering past the house. But then it wasn’t my usual north London home when these feathered friends popped by; I was taking a short break in the Peak District. I wanted an escape from the stress and long hours of my busy working life and it was the first morning of my weekend away at Riverside House. Our journey there only took us two and a half hours from Enfield. We were delighted to find Riverside House had everything we needed. The cottage, down a very quiet country lane with a river on one side, is in a conservation hamlet. The cottage has lovely exposed beams and stone walls, but is also
fully modernised. We were delighted to find an ample (and free) supply of logs for the log burning stove, plenty of DVDs for the surround sound TV, lots of local guide books, board games and novels. My husband was impressed with the separate games room that had pool table, table tennis, air hockey and a beer fridge. I loved the riverside views, quiet location and friendly ducks! After a great nights’ sleep (no car alarms and no street lighting) we set off to explore the local walks and trails. From the rear of the cottage you can access the Monsal Trail with a newly opened cycle trail. We walked but you can hire electric bikes or standard bikes and cycle traffic free for 8 miles in some lovely countryside. One of the walks from Riverside House led us to the Red Lion in Litton. What a fantastic pub; real ale, log fires, hearty, good value food, my husband loved his steak and kidney pie, and traditional décor as well as friendly locals and landlady. We also explored Tideswell (about a 30 minute walk or 5 minutes drive) and those of you that have watched the BBC’s Village SOS series will recognise it as the village that set up a cookery school. For groups wanting to celebrate special occasions the cookery school would be a great days’ entertainment. Next time I visit I’d like to try the Thai cookery course and my husband suggested he would try the brewing course! The Peak District has so much to offer from outdoor activities including rock climbing, mountain biking, caving, fishing, horse riding and hang gliding, to famous country
houses such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall (both featured in films such as Jane Eyre, The Other Boleyn Girl and Pride and Prejudice). We visited Chatsworth House and couldn’t resist popping into their farm shop. If you are a foodie you will love it here. My husband and I spent an off-season weekend break at Riverside House with a group of friends. There were 8 of us in four bedrooms and there are three bathrooms. It would also be great for families (the owners provide stair gates, high chair, fire guard and cot), and being very dog friendly our four legged friends would
also have a great holiday. Riverside House would be ideal for a special birthday or wedding anniversary celebration too, as the owners can help organise spa days and catered dinner parties! For our group it was a great place to relax, unwind and rejuvenate. I now feel ready to face the Monday morning rat race again. Home Improvements
Don’t move – improve! Ideas and Advice for creating a dream home. With the UK housing market still relatively flat, the escalating cost of moving and the difficulty in obtaining a bank loan, many people are choosing to stay put and improve their home rather than move on. EN magazine takes a tour around some of your most frequently used rooms, and shares some practical advice from local professionals on ways to improve them. Whether it’s a full makeover or just a few small changes, you can make the rooms in your home feel like new.
Kitchens. Whether you’re whipping up a quick midweek meal or preparing a feast for friends, the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home. As well as cooking space, you’ll need room for storage, and possibly an eating area. With so many requirements from one room, it makes sense to ask the advice of a professional designer. “As kitchen designers, we often end up advising people not to have what they first ask for,” says Mark Rainbow of Designer Kitchens in Potters Bar. “Do people really want the dishwasher with 20 washing options when realistically they

will only ever use one setting? That’s just one of the ways that we can help create the ideal kitchen. By knowing the questions to ask, we can find out what people really want and what will work for them, rather than what they’ve seen or heard about. We want our customers to be happy with their kitchens – not just the price they pay, but the functionality for years to come. Kitchens now come with an extensive range of products, not just the traditional sinks, cookers, hobs, fridges and dishwashers. At a recent open day with one of our suppliers, Neff, we were able to demonstrate to new and existing customers some of their innovative kitchen appliances, from built-in coffee and drink machines, to steam combination and CircoTherm cookers. The open day is just one of the ways we try to support our customers through every stage of planning a kitchen. “Many people come in to our showroom with an
idea of what they want with regards to fixtures, fittings and appliances, but often these turn out to be impractical for the size or shape of the room. Once we sit down with our customer and start to discuss ideas, we get to understand their requirements better and then put together a design. “From working with the architect to plan the kitchen around the design of a house or extension, to supplying and fitting the finished kitchen, working with a kitchen designer at every stage will make sure that you get your dream kitchen,” adds Mark.
Bathrooms Many people will think of the bathroom as purely functional, but it’s a lot more than that. A bathroom is a reflection of you and your lifestyle. Are you the kind of person who has time to relax and soak for hours in a luxurious bath; someone who’s always on the go and only uses the shower; do you have a family needing all the options; or are you someone who wants all the latest gadgets?
Home Improvements storage is a big consideration; fortunately there lots of options available, from built-in cupboards to bathroom vanity units, to give you whatever storage you need in your bathroom.
Tiled rooms If the tiled walls in your kitchen or bathroom are a bit tired or you fancy a new look, there are number of low-cost ways to spruce up your walls without breaking the bank. EN Magazine spoke to James Gentleman, manager of the Tile Depot store in Enfield.
Once you’ve figured out where everything should go, you need to start thinking about the style and functionality of your bathroom. Will you go for a traditional bathtub, a claw-foot or even a whirlpool or hydro-massage bath? Will you have a wall-mounted sink or a vanity based unit? Do you
want a separate walk-in shower or one that stands over the bath? Once you’ve made the major decisions on bath, basin and toilet design and style, it’s time to choose the accessories that’ll give your bathroom the finishing touch. From taps to
toilet roll holders and towel rails, it’s the little things that will make all the difference and make your bathroom unique. Another important – and often overlooked – area of bathroom design is storage. Whether you live alone or need somewhere to store the children’s rubber ducks,
“If none of the tiles are broken and you’re happy with the colour, the first option to consider is buying an intense tile cleaner, as well as a dedicated grout cleaner and restorer. At the Tile Depot we offer a brand new range of tile and grout cleaners, sealers, protectors and enhancers, at less than half the price of branded equivalents. Even in the cleanest of homes, it’s surprising what an intense clean can do; bringing a shiny

“If you really want new tiles, there are a number of ways to save. As well as tiles in porcelain and natural stone, we have some beautiful ceramic tiles at the lower end of the price scale, and there’s always a choice of great deals with our Manager’s Specials. If you hire a tradesman to fit them for you, save money by removing and disposing of the old tiles yourself. Or why not have a go at tiling the room yourself? One of the trickiest things is getting the very first row of tiles on each wall straight, but with a brand new invention called Tile Go, only available in the UK at the moment from Tile Depot, it’s fast, easy, cheap, accurate and safe to be ready to start tiling in a minute or two – without the need for tools or the risk of bursting water pipes or hitting electrical wires.
“We’re often asked if it’s possible to tile over old tiles to save on time, cost and mess. Usually, this is fine, providing the original tiles are well fixed and undamaged. We advise that the surface of the old tiles should be scratched up with a sharp tool to provide a key and then painted with a coat of our Acrylic Bond Primer. Then the new tiles should be fitted using MultiFix or an equally good quality adhesive to ensure a strong fix.”
Flooring Changing the flooring in a room can totally change the feel of the space. A light, bright carpet or light wooden
Home Improvements “We are finding that people are using wood and laminates for hall areas with carpet still favourite on stairs and in living areas. Striped carpet has become very popular, particular on stairs, which can turn them into a focal point in the home. We are selling far more carpets with bright colours in them and not so many neutral shades, it seams strong and bold is the way people are tending to go,” John added.
Fireplaces Another home improvement that is proving extremely popular is installing a fireplace. Fireplaces can use wood, gas or electric and as well as giving off heat can create a talking point in a room. floor can make a small room feel – well, more roomy! “When you’re considering a carpet, you need to think of what the space will be used for. If it’s an area that’ll have heavy use, like a hall, stairs, landing or living room, you’ll need something that can withstand
a certain degree of wear. We recommend an 80% wool/20% man-made Twist or Velvet carpet. There’s a huge choice of colours, and grades range. For a room that may not get so much footfall you can go for carpets that have a softer, plush feel. These are usually
man-made fibres, and again a wide variety of colours are available. Super Luxury Saxony Carpet with a two-inch thick pile is extremely comforting underfoot and ideal for use in a bedroom.” Says John of John Powell Carpets.
“It wasn’t long ago that the trend was to rip out old fireplaces or brick them in,” says Neal Stean of the Hertfordshire Fireplace Gallery. “Nowadays, many people see the fireplace as both a way of heating a room and as a focal decorative point. Fireplaces

Home Improvements come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional open fires to modern designs with marble, limestone and timber surrounds, with gas or electric options providing a real-flame effect.” “At Jean Barrie Fireplaces, as well as an extensive range of hand crafted fireplaces in natural stone and various surrounds in modern, contemporary and traditional designs we also have an extensive selection of Stoves. These are proving very popular. As they stand alone they can be easily added to a room. With the increasing cost of both gas and electricity, fires and stoves give an additional and cost effective way to heat a room, while creating a warming and cosy environment,” added Barrie from Jean Barrie.
Lighting Your Home “One of the easiest ways to alter the feel or mood of a room in your home is with lighting,” says Steve from Kramer Lighting & Electrical
over a staircase, you may wish to choose a light which hangs lower. • Have you got space for wall lights? They are an excellent way to provide some soft, low-level light, creating atmosphere and warmth. • Are there dark corners in your room that need some extra light? Showroom. “We all like our homes to feel comfortable and inviting so designing the way they are lit is important. The right lighting will accentuate a room and help you to get more from the space, whether you’re cooking, working or relaxing.” When you deciding to change or update your lighting there are some simple questions to ask yourself. • How do you use the space
and at what time of the day? If the space needs to work right throughout the day, then a number of different levels of lighting will be appropriate. • How big is the space? Have you got room for a big chandelier, or maybe a compact spotlight will be more suitable? • How high is your ceiling? If the room has a low ceiling then a flush or semi-flush light may be the best choice. If the area has more height – for example
“When it comes to fitting lights we would always recommend getting a professional electrician in to do the job for you,” Steve added.
