RESTORATION STARTS AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH - CLAY HILL

T

he church at the top of Clay Hill has served the Parish for 150 years and it was a sad time when it had to close in September 2006 because of structural problems . After the closure of St John’s the fund raising began in earnest. Thanks go to the local community, wedding couples, parents of children baptised at St John’s and local businesses for donations received together with a grant from English Heritage. This enabled detailed initial investigations to begin. A difference of opinion of the structural problems has meant that the main

renovation work has been delayed. Consulting engineers and English Heritage have now agreed on how the major repairs to the building should proceed but fund raising must continue to enable this work to be completed. Contrary to local rumours no money was received by the Parish for the sale of the mobile home site which is located next to St John’s. Interim repairs to solve immediate problems with the building have been carried out and enabled the church to open again for worship. Re-ordering of the inside of the church is still in progress.

St John’s was built as a result of the Oxford Movement founded 175 years ago. During the 1850s the Vicar of Enfield wanted to establish the new found principles of apostolic Christianity represented by the Oxford Movement, i.e. that the Eucharist was the central form of worship, and that daily prayer, devotions, and instruction should be available to all people. The movement brought colour,

imagination and music back into the Church of England. Bishop Peter will be coming to re-dedicate the Church at 11.15 am on the 21 September 2008 and all are welcome to attend. A variety of services will be held, details of which will be publicised. Hopefully St John’s will once again be a centre for worship and other activities for all to share in.

Haircutting in the TV age

T

V Cameras were recently at James Whitaker Men’s Hair on Lancaster Road Enfield to film the salon in action for the introduction of tv screens in the mirrors for clients’ entertainment. The screens and programmes are run by lifestyle tv, a broadcasting channel delivering tailored lifestyle content directly into its clients’ hair salons. They feature regularly updated articles about entertainment & celebrity, fashion, travel, health & beauty and food & drink. Clients can sit back and enjoy lifestyle tv on state of the art Diamond Crystal Mirrors that, when switched on, converts a part of the mirror into a TV delivering amazing

entertaining content. “The introduction of the screens has had a big impact on our clients. They have always enjoyed a relaxing time in our chairs having chats with me or one of the hair stylists but now we give them something extra. It has generated a big interest.” said James. “The mixture of news and lifestyle programmes are great and we have the opportunity to show advertisements from other local companies to our customers as they are sat watching the screen.” To book an appointment to watch TV while having your hair cut call James on 020 8362 1515 or for advertising call Neil on 07717 592 005.

Potters Bar Gets To Vote For Parish Council P

otters Bar to have its own Parish Council? In Septemberresidents in Potters Bar will be given the opportunity to vote in favour for or against plans to have a parish council following the submission of two petitions to Hertsmere council: one supporting and one against the establishment of a parish council. The referendum will form part of a ‘community governance review’ which the council must carry out under the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007. The review will be carried out by officers who will specify the area of the parish to be considered for a council and consult with certain bodies such as the county council, local businesses and community groups. The council will be working with the Hertfordshire Association of Parish and Town Councils. During this process they will also help set up the parish council if residents decide that’s what they want. What does a parish council do? Parish and town councils are the first tier of local government. They give residents more say and control over the way public services are delivered to them and the opportunity to get involved in the issues and services which are

important to them. Parish councils tend to look after a range of services including: Maintenance of grass verges Playgrounds Community centres Village fetes Christmas lights Farmers markets. Running youth councils Providing services for older people (eg arranging transport to supermarkets Protecting local bus routes. How much would it cost? It is difficult to say exactly how much because it would depend on what budget a new parish council decided to set. However estimates, based on similar sized parish/town councils, suggest that an average household could expect to pay around £32 extra a year on their council tax. Who would be the councillors for a parish council? Candidates would be invited to stand before the 12/1/08 14:03:21 elections in May 2009 (or June 2009 to coincide with European elections). If there were more candidates than seats available, an election would take place. However, if the seats were uncontested, e.g. there were five seats and five people wanted to stand, there would be no need for an election.

Chase Farm Hospital Update

T

he fight to Save Chase Farm continues and EN Magazine spoke to Councillor Kirena Mcgreagor to find out the latest. “Enfield Council along with Barnet and Haringey called in the decision to downgrade services, therefore the proposed ‘changes’ are on hold pending a decision by the Secretary of State for health, Allan Johnson. Allan Johnson invited the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP) to review the decision and they visited all stakeholders in July to hear evidence. The Joint Health Scrutiny panels of the three boroughs put their case. In addition, the Save Chase

Farm Group met them to present our case. In our view, the NHS decision to select Option 2, fails to meet its own criteria relating to accessibility, deliverability and sustainability. The IRP heard evidence from a number of local clinicians including GPs, midwives and consultants who are opposed to the reconfiguration. The Minister is due to make his decision in early September. The Save Chase Farm Group strongly believes that the decision and the consultation process were flawed and that the IRP’s report will highlight the flaws and make appropriate recommendations to the Minister.”

T

he arrival of a baby often has a major effect on a family’s life but for Tony Singh and Govinder Heer, it meant the launch of a new bar and restaurant in Potters Bar. “Having worked in marketing in the City of London, I wanted a career that would give me more flexibility to be with my child. We decided to open a bar and to base it on the kind of wine bars in the City that I used to know. We looked around the Enfield, Cheshunt and Potters Bar areas before deciding on the High Street, Potters Bar to open Luthers.” said Govinder. “I had previously been involved with property development” added Tony, “but this was a whole new challenge. To create the look and feel that we wanted, we have spent over £150k on the premises. From adding new skylights to give a light and airy effect, to having special taps in the toilets. We have tried to create a spacious and comfortable

area where people will come to relax or party but overall, enjoy themselves in a venue different to any other currently in Potters Bar. With a range of comfy sofas, bar stools or small booth style seating I feel we offer something for everyone”. Since opening in November 2007, Luthers has established a range of regular nights from karaoke on Thursdays to Funky House Fridays and more soulful R&B Saturdays. “As well as the regular nights we also hold “special events”, including speed dating, ladies’ nights and the forthcoming comedy and charity nights” Govinder told EN. Luthers also offers a fine dining experience of traditional and modern Indian cuisine prepared by their chef, Pramod Kumar, who has worked at leading hotels in India. Pramod leads a team who prepare a range of foods that are influenced from the Punjab region of India. “Our fine dining menu

Local News and Events offers 2 courses for £13.95, served with 3 vegetable side dishes and naan bread. In addition, we have a wine list which was designed by a Sommelier that advises which wine best complements each of the main courses on the menu”, said Tony. “Alongside the fine dining evening experience we offer a range of bar snacks and on Monday to Friday lunch times we present a buffet for £5.95. On Sundays we have an all day buffet for £7.95.” Luthers is also available for private hire and Christmas bookings are already being taken. “We aim to give our customers the best possible time

and for private functions one of the little touches which customers seem to appreciate, is having a cocktail designed and named for the event”. For more information call or visit: Luthers at 33 High Street, Potters Bar. Telephone number: 0707 662822 www.luthers.co.uk

O

n the 6th September 2008, internationally renowned comedian and ventriloquist Paul Zerdin, returns to the Millfield Theatre in his own stand up show. EN magazine spoke to Paul to find out more. “ My first steps into a showbiz career started when I got a magic set as a birthday gift. I started ventriloquism at about 15 and found it caused lots of fun when I brought comedy puppets into my magic shows. When I was 17, I got my first big break with a season on a cruise ship through my agent, where I found that the ventriloquist part of my act received more acclaim than the magic show”.

Paul’s current show is a mixture of stand up comedy supported by three characters: Sam – Your typical precocious kid who something funny from observing the world around him. Albert – Based on the stereotypical grandad; “I am not sure if my dad is turning into Albert or Albert into my dad!” Baby – Inquisitive to the point of annoyance “I think everyone will recognise the characters’ traits from someone that they know”, said Paul, “It’s just that through my act I emphasise and highlight them”. “My career in showbiz has given me opportunities

19/8/08 16:18:19

Local News and Events to travel. I have had the chance to travel on cruise ships around the world. I have also entertained troops in Afghanistan; probably the largest audience I have played to – an amazing experience and opportunity.” “One of my strangest opportunities was to perform at the birthday party of a Saudi Prince. One of his aids saw me on YouTube and I was flown to the Seychelles for a one-off show!” “The biggest downside of what I do is spending hours in airport lounges. When my job is good it is the best in the world but it can be the worst. You have to be very driven and not let anyone stop you. You have to be very strong willed and not let anything get you down when starting out. If I had listened to my career advisers I would never have got into show business but I believed in myself and just kept trying until I got my break. I would advise anyone thinking of a career in showbiz to make sure that they get a good education behind them in case they don’t make it. These days reality shows are giving people their 15 minutes of fame but when I was starting there were lots of variety shows allowing people to showcase their talents, however most of these have disappeared.” “Nowadays there seems to be a hunger for live entertainment and this is where I would advise someone with a showbiz career to look. TV shows used to pull 20 million plus viewers, it is now deemed a major success to get 4.5

million however live shows are growing in popularity especially the comedy circuit with new venues opening up all the time.” For Paul, apart from his current tour, in which he appears with Phil Butler and Richard Morton, he is hoping to appear at next year’s Montreal Comedy Festival as well as the festivals in Cape Town and Johannesburg. “I am also hoping to appear on the David Letterman show in the

US. I was invited to appear last year but problems with visas meant that I could not get there on time. Last time I appeared on TV in the States, I saw a massive upsurge in the sales of my DVDs, so the exposure to the American audience would be fantastic again”. Education

Education! Education! Education!

A

s parents sigh with relief that the long summer school holidays are over and children return to school, many parents are installed with a new worry over their children’s exam passing abilities. This worry is often hyped up by the media, proclaiming that the GCSE and A level exams are getting easier, the increasing dependence on national statistics for pass rates and grading schools - and the fact that there is an increasing perception among

many that fewer and fewer children are learning at school, except how to pass exams. This media circus and the clamour to get children into the best schools in the area, often having to pass entrance exams, is leading to more and more parents looking to educational organisations offering out of school tutoring to help. EN Magazine went along to one of these organisations to find out more about what they offer – Kip McGrath. Kip McGrath was launched 30 years ago in Australia and has grown to have over 680 Kip McGrath Education Centres in 20 countries around the world, offering speciality learning programs which are designed to help everyone develop their potential: from

pre-schoolers to university students. In Enfield the local Kip McGrath centre is run by Shaaron Kingston with her team, all experienced Primary or Secondary teachers in England with, of course, full experience of the National Curriculum requirements. They are fully trained in the Kip McGrath teaching methods and, of course, have undergone CRB checks (police checks). Before setting up her own Kip McGrath Centre, Shaaron had been a teacher at both Primary (teaching primarily year 6) and Secondary (teaching ICT – Information Communications Technology and English) since 1995. “Having gained a Business Studies Degree I had always had a drive to branch out on my own. After teaching for a few years I was becoming frustrated at not having time to work with the students and give them the attention that they need. It was while on a teaching conference that I found out about Kip McGrath and felt that it was a great opportunity for students and myself.” “The systems we have in place for teaching, using a mixture of technology (computers) and traditional workbooks and worksheets have shown dramatic improvements in many of our students” Shaaron told us. “Initially we invite both potential students and their parents along and carry out an assessment of the pupil’s current abilities in reading, writing, spelling, comprehension and maths. We then sit with the parents

to discuss the areas that the assessment has highlighted for improvement. From this starting point we are able to “tailor make” a program to improve specifically identified areas. We aim to help target the weakness and to show the pupil were they are improving to help them build confidence.” The initial assessment is free of charge but thereafter sessions last for 1 hour 20 minutes and cost just £25 “Parents get involved if they have the time to. We speak to them after each session to help them understand where there children need help and where the improvements are. This helps to build relationships between parent and child and is useful for the parents to help and encourage both the attending of the session and the homework that is set” “Many of our pupils often attend extra sessions for a short period of time, for example in the run up to GCSE exams, SATs or if they are sitting entrance papers (11+). By far the majority of our clients come from referrals – I would say that most parents refer at least one person to us.” “It is an exciting time for us at the Enfield centre as we are moving in to our new premises as soon as Summer school is over, ready for the new school term on September 1st. All of our parents and children are looking forward to this!.” For more information contact Shaaron Kinston on 020 8363 5008 or visit www.kipmcgrath.co.uk

Out and About

A Walk Through Time and History of Enfield

W

hilst I’m away, I want you to take a hike”, my boss told me cheerily before heading off on his hols. “Charming” I thought, until he explained himself a bit more. I was actually to experience an Enfield Heritage walk and write a piece on it. The walking wasn’t going to be a problem as I love a stroll and so do my dogs. I have only lived in Enfield for a short time but I have found it to be a place of contrast, and by that I mean, city meets countryside in a successful fusion of old and new. The former hunting grounds of Kings of England is as rich in history as it is in present day entertainment and one can enjoy its canal walks, parks, back streets, shopping, theatre, cinema and all the surrounding country areas in the present but still feel the vibe of past centuries. It’s strange how a person can drive or walk around an area for many years and take for granted the buildings, history, or look and general feel of a road or pathway traversed many times. It is only when you start doing a bit of research that you realize that your feet have trodden the same path as kings, queens, antiquarians, scholars and horticulturists. Mind-boggling! You also find out that not all of Enfield’s historical inhabitants were

so welcome; it is said hat the notorious Dick Turpin found the once great woodland areas of Enfield Chase, the perfect locale to carry out his nefarious activities and his ghost is said to still haunt the area. Forty Hall itself has long been a haunt of mine. The open fields leading away from the house make it an ideal and safe environment for dog walkers such as myself and this is why I chose this particular amble from “Heritage Walks in the London Borough of Enfield” I parked locally but if a person takes the pedestrian path at the junction of Baker Street & Myddelton Avenue towards Forty Hill, the first thing you will note is the 18th century gate and brick walls to Gough Park, all that remain of the residence of Richard Gough, a director of the East India Company and antiquarian. To be honest, this little piece of history has a very sad and neglected feel about it, with all the weeds and nettles fighting to take over. It makes you wish that someone would restore the gates so they might be appreciated. Continue up the pathway towards Forty Hall and you will see the former Goat Public House built in 1929, now converted into Elizabethan style flats built on what I believe was once the village green and

a 17th century Jacobean mansion originally built on the grounds of the former Palace Elsynge. As you wander up the pathway you will see the impressive Atlantic Cedar tree on your left. You just have to look at it to imagine romantic trysts beneath the wide spread branches, children (maybe even adults) from each era climbing the boughs and looking out over the countryside and picnics spread beneath its shading foliage – it is truly splendid. fields lay beyond, leading to fishing lakes and serene walks. The house was originally built by Sir Nicholas Raynton, Lord Mayor of London in 1632 and then bought by Henry Carington Bowles of Myddelton House for his eldest son. It remained a Bowles’ family home until it was sold to Enfield Urban District Council in 1951. It is now a museum, gallery, tea room and banqueting hall. Many festivities are held here including an Elizabethan Fayre, Jacobean pageant and kite making workshops during the summer, to mention but a few. It is well worth a visit. Out and About looking Victorian Garnault House, the birthplace of B.J.T. Bosanquet, the Middlesex and England cricketer who invented the “Googly in 1903. The next place of interest is the entrance to Myddelton House. This was home to E.A. Bowles from1865 – 1954 and he spent much of his life creating the wonderful garden. He was an enthusiastic collector and many of his unusual varieties can still be seen in the garden today. Sadly, it would appear that his enthusiasm died with him and the garden fell into disrepair for some time and many plants were lost. However between the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and the E.A. Bowles of Myddelton House Society,

the four-acre garden has now been restored in the original style. The gardens are open daily (there is an admission charge) and are well worth a look. Historic reminders of Enfield past are also incorporated. Pubs are always a good point of interest on any walk and by now you may be in need of some libation. The delightful, picturesque Pied Bull is just the ticket. It started life in the 17th century, part of it used as kennels for James 1’s hunting dogs and was, back then, located in a vast forest. Nowadays however, it is within a mile of the M25 (J25) but its cosy atmosphere, oak beams, small low windows, old fireplaces and real ales and wines still evoke a feeling of tranquility.

Last point of interest on this walk, but not least, is Capel Manor. This is a wonderful estate offering a 30 acre scented oasis, which has been a delight to gardeners and public alike for nearly 40 years. You get a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of this specialist college and it has a full and varied programme of shows and events throughout the year. This is also a delightful place to take younger members of the family, as there is a play area and animals to look at. And so the walk ends or maybe not if you have to walk all the way back again!. It was certainly a pleasure for me to learn about the area, get exercise without really trying, looking to my heart’s content at lovely properties, and generally

enjoy myself. Satisfaction on many levels. EN Interview

Over 100 Years and Four Generations Supplying Goods To Enfield and The Surronding Areas

E

nfield Town has gone through many redevelopments over the years with the latest, Palace Xchange, being opened last year. People up and down the country complain that these days high streets are becoming indistinguishable with the same shops owned by faceless national and international organisations appearing everywhere. In Enfield we have had a family run business on the high street that has been there for over 100 years, a shop that gives Enfield town something different from other shopping areas throughout the country Pearsons. EN Magazine meet up with Mrs. Carol Henderson the granddaughter of the founder, to find out more about this family run business and her relationship with the store.: “In 1903 my grandfather Arthur Pearson and his elder brother Stanley, acquired

a small drapery business. Many different districts had been considered but it had been decided to purchase the business owned by Mr. William Locke whose premises were situated where Messrs J Lyons stood then and is now Café Nero. In 1903 our staff consisted of two young sales ladies, two sales men and one porter. The latter, together with his internal duties also made deliveries on a bicycle.” “Our first expansion came in 1907 when additional premises were taken where the HSBC Bank now stands. This enabled us to increase the then existing departments and to ease the congestion, which an expanding business had happily caused. Between this time and 1921 a few small alterations were made where possible, although these years were overshadowed by the First World War. To provide

for future expansion considerable purchases of property were made wherever possible, including that of the old Elizabethan Palace. In 1921 the first part of that building was opened and included underwear, baby linen, glove and cosmetics departments. At that time the staff consisted of approximately 40 people. Over the next number of years additional expansions were made to enable us to present a furnishing showroom. This section was under the supervision of Mr. Sidney Pearson, the younger brother, who remained in the family business until 1946. In 1946 Mr. Arthur Pearson’s son Jack and Mr. George Jones, who had been on the buying staff for some 13 years became members of the Board of Directors.” “I joined the Company in 1963, having started my business career as a secretary with the National Farmers Union, as my

father wanted me to see how other Companies ran their businesses. I went on very many business courses in different types of retail outlets including Libertys, Cuffs of Woolwich, Cheesemans of Lewisham, to name just a few from where I was lucky enough to have learnt about our trade. I first worked on the haberdashery department, fashions and jewellery. When we opened our confectionery and tobacco department I became Buyer for approximately six months. As I had always wanted to work with people, I was extremely lucky in having the opportunity of being part of the Personnel team. This consisted of helping employees with staff training, which they had once a week for ten weeks over three periods of the year.” “I then became Assistant Staff Manager for approximately a year 17

EN Interview and then, owing to my colleague’s position of having to leave the company for maternity leave, I became Personnel Manager. This was a very interesting and very rewarding position to hold. You certainly gain a very wide insight to people. I left in April 1971 to have my first son, Stuart, in September and then in August 1973, my second son Richard arrived. I am delighted to say that both my sons are now in the business, one being Store Director at Bishops Stortford and the other Store Director at Enfield. In 1971 my husband, who was previously in the Estate Agent business joined the Company so as you can see it really is a family affair.

18

We purchased our store at Bishops Stortford in 1969, which I am glad to say is flourishing. Our Wood Green Store was opened in February 1996 but as you may know we had to close in March of this year.” “Last year we, as I hope you know, had a major refurbishment at our Enfield Store and the building has now increased to 65,000 sq.ft. We are now linked, still as the main anchor store, to the new Palace Xchange precinct. The additional space has allowed us to expand our key departments of ladies’ fashion, young fashion, men’s fashion and fragrance, all of which cater for customers of all ages and provide merchandise and brands the modern

customer rightly expects in a pleasing and comfortable environment. We now employ approximately 400 staff, including concession employees.” “Finally as you can appreciate I am extremely proud that after 104 years

we are one of the very few private, independent family businesses. I hope this will remain so for many years to come.”

Harvest Festival

Celebrating Local Produce and Harvests A

s summer fades away and we are forced to stuff our shorts and tshirts at the back of our wardrobes there seems little to look forward to. Before you pull out the oversized jumper that was knitted for you by a loved one I have two words for you: “Harvest Festival”. Since Pagan times Britain has been giving thanks for successful harvests and I proudly remember dragging into school: fruits, vegetables and all different types of foods. Some were found lurking at the back of my mum’s kitchen cupboards while others were carefully selected. Our teacher would then get us to draw colourful pictures and decorate the classroom before we took our food to local charities and senior citizens in the community. The celebration of Harvest Festival is a great opportunity for you and your family to re-discover your community and the local businesses that supply fresh, organic and locally grown produce. Our local farms offer a variety of products, experiences and family days out. So pull on your wellies and grab the kids for not only a fun afternoon or morning, but a good way for children to learn about the vegetables and fruit they eat. Located on Hadley Road, Parkside is

the only ‘Pick Your Own Farm’. Parkside Farm is a family run business and the emphasis really is on family. As you pick up your punnet, ready to pile in your delicious fruits and veg, you will be welcomed by one of the owners of the farm, Nan Whitman, whose friendly personality reminds me of what customer service is all about. Mother and Son, Nan and Richard Whitman, are more than just their business; they provide the community with a truly pleasant and safe environment for your family to learn and experience a natural way of shopping. As you can ‘pick your own’ you can see that the produce is fresh and ripe, amazingly the flavour out shines the eye catching and vibrant colours, in what my grandma would describe as: “How food used to taste.” I know some of you are probably thinking how much am I paying for this pleasure? Well to be honest their prices are so competitive that I would rather be shopping there than battling through shopping trolleys and sifting through punnets of pre-packaged veggies from the other side of the country. However, if you’re not quite ready to walk out into the fields and get your hands dirty then you should pop into Botany Bay Farm Shop. Offering a large selection of fruit, vegetables, dairy products, home made jams, meat and many other mouth watering delights. For less than £3 you can pick up

some amazing Pork and Apple Burgers, for less than £4, English Sausages and for the more adventurous Whole Rabbit portions sell at £4, which is extremely reasonable. So now we have celebrated the food, the Harvest Festival is also about the land that the food has grown from. It’s a time to forget that the sun isn’t shinning and remember all the good things that the harvest brings. If you’re up for a challenge then grab your rain-macs and head to Ferny Hill Farm to battle through their six- acre field of corn, with a themed maze designed to test your wits and sense of direction! When you finally find your way out you can take a rest at their beautiful tea shop and enjoy some lovely home baking. But if you’re really not one to brave the elements and you’re quite glad to have your woolly jumper on then head to Willow Farm Village, just off of junction 22 on the M25. There are plenty of roofed areas to make sure that even if the heavens do open up, you and your woolly jumpers will stay nice and dry. With inside as well as outside play areas, there is plenty to keep you and your little ones busy for a whole day. 19

Harvest Festival Something extra special about this place is that as well as farm-fresh produces and locally sourced foods including seasonal vegetables and fresh bread on the premises everyday. They have a maternity wing where you can see newborn piglets, rabbits, mice and anything else that may have just greeted the world with its presence. This is a truly fantastic experience for all ages, and if you visit between 25th October and 2nd November they are giving children the opportunity to get involved with the harvesting of thousands of pumpkins. The Harvest Festival is a celebration that all the family can get involved in. It’s a great way to learn about local produce and what is available on our own doorstep. It’s not just a friendly way of shopping. It benefits the environment and provides us with fresh organic food at a fair price. at Enfield’s Capel Manor Gardens, to celebrate an event called City Harvest Festival. Now in its 10th year, this is an event for the whole family and demonstrates all the work they do throughout the year. There are plenty of attractions, including an animal show, a marquee filled with vegetables and flowers grown in the city’s community gardens and a variety of craft demonstrations. It’s a great way to experience the spirit of the Harvest Festival. History of Harvest Festival Traditions and Customs Today we enjoy Harvest Festival at the end of the season. However, many years ago it used to be celebrated at the beginning of the Harvest season on 1st August and was called Lammas, meaning ‘loaf Mass’. Farmers would make loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and give them to their local church. They were then used as the Communion bread during a special mass thanking

God for the harvest. At the start of the harvest, communities would appoint a strong and respected man of the village known as the ‘Lord of the Harvest’. He would then be responsible for negotiating the harvest wages and organising the fieldworkers. At the end the ‘Lord of the Harvest’ would sit at the head of the table in a celebratory meal called a Harvest Supper, which traditionally took place on Michaelmas Day. A corn doll was made from the last sheaf of corn harvested, and often it took a place of honour at the banquet table being kept until the following spring. By Patricia Conti

-WEDDINGSSome Ideas To Help You Get The Most Out Of Your Big Day

O

k so you have met the person of your dreams and you have decided to get married. The actual marriage ceremony will last between 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on if it’s a civil or religious service. However, the planning for the big day can take months or even years. With all the preparation that goes into creating the big event, it would take more than the space available in EN Magazine to provide all the information that you might need for setting up your day, but hopefully we can give you some pointers to help you on your way. Not everyone has the £3 million budget for their Wedding as the now married Mr. Wayne and Mrs. Coleen Rooney, however that does not mean that every bride and groom do not want to make their day as special as possible. Research shows that the dream of the fairytale wedding is alive and well, although there is also evidence that people are finding it hard to justify excessive expenditure on a single day. The venue is often one of the first things that needs to be arranged for both the wedding and reception. Many popular venues will book early, some over a year in advance. Several things you may want to consider when choosing your venue include: Location – whether the venue is easy to find and does it have ample parking. You don’t want guests getting lost trying to join your celebration. Capacity - look to ensure that the venue you choose has a sufficient sized area for the

number of guests and the kind of event you are planning. If you are arranging to have a disco or live entertainment, check that the venue has space for a dance floor and the necessary licenses for entertainment. Special Report - Weddings advice, try to go for dishes that are not too fussy. The Wedding Dress & all that goes with it! Choosing the right wedding dress is a major decision for any bride to be. As boring as it sounds research is your first stepping-stone. Buy an assortment of bridal wear magazines and tear out pictures of the ones that first take your fancy, then put them aside. Go and have another look a few days later and see if anything else catches your eye the second time around and do the same thing. You could do this over a few months if you have time, getting different looks for different seasons. When you have picked out your favourites go through them again and take out the ones you no longer find so attractive. Believe it or not, you will have changed your mind and will do so several times! Then you will have the basis of what you are looking for. Once this is done the fun begins

22

and you can start going to the shops and trying dresses on. Clutching the photos of your dream dress you will have a mind set about what you want, but do be open to suggestion from the people who work in the industry. They could sell you whatever you want, but it is in their interest to make you look as beautiful as you dream of being. They will sometimes recommend a dress or accessories that you might not initially have considered – take my word for it – try them. You do need to give yourself plenty of time to look not only for the dress but all the trimmings as well, and if you cannot make up your mind in one outing, leave it for another day. Don’t panic buy. Alternatively think about having your dress made by a good seamstress. There is nothing like meeting up with someone and discussing the shape of your dress, colours, materials, trains, bows etc., and coming up with a pattern for your own ‘unique’ wedding dress. Very satisfying.

In addition to the dress you will have to think about your hair, make-up and jewellery. If you are not doing your own hair on the day, do take time to have a trial run with your hairdresser. The elaborate coiffeur you could be planning may not work, so you’ll need an alternative; you will also need an idea of the time it will take to create your look on the day. The same applies to your make-up. Timing and planning is everything on this important occasion. Jewellery choice should come after you have picked your dress and should enhance it, not distract from it. Study yourself and think about necklines, veils, tiaras and colours.

Capturing The Big Day For many people getting married the day is over so quickly that they do not have time to take it all in. The emotion of the event and the celebration can be over so rapidly after the months of planning and preparation. To make sure that you get to remember, and see, everything that happens, the answer is simple: get a wedding photographer – but what should you be looking for from your wedding photographer? EN magazine met Joel Dyer from Silent Echo Photography to find out: “When looking for a wedding photographer, I would advise meeting your chosen photographer so that you can see whether you like the actual person and feel comfortable with them. Remember, this person is going to be spending the day with you and will be a vital part of capturing your memories.” “A wedding photographer should always show you samples of their work, and not just twenty of their ‘best’ photographs. It should consist of a selection of complete albums so that you can see a consistent quality to their work of an entire wedding. Personally, I provide a viewing gallery on my website so that a large selection of my work at various weddings can be viewed.” “Many people have friends who can take

photographs, but there is a big difference between taking photographs and being a wedding photographer. There are various skills and equipment, not to mention the knowledge of different lighting which come into play whilst photographing a

wedding. Professional wedding photographers will have the experience of how to bring the best out of guests, not only the adults, but also the children. Various equipment, such as the use of stools, lighting instruments and ladders, will provide the best individual

Special Report - Weddings and group shots. Plus, if you hire a professional wedding photographer, they will undoubtedly have, or gain, knowledge of the venue. This will ensure the best photographs in the best locations.” For more information on Silent Echo photography, visit www. silentechophotography.com or call 020-8360-8030

Gardening

YOUR AUTUMN GARDEN By Bryan Hewitt, Head Gardener

at Myddelton House Gardens, Enfield

I

t is hard to believe, but the days are shortening now already, which triggers different behaviour in the plant world: the seed pods start drying out and the herbaceous plants begin to look tired as they die down for the winter. The late summer bedding plants should now be in full swing and some will have already gone to seed. During the last few years, the first frosts have been quite late, allowing summer bedding plants such as begonias, marigolds and geraniums in flower well into December. However, this cannot always be expected. It is always a good

26

idea to leave the flowering borders and flower beds to continue as long as possible. This allows butterflies, moths and other pollinating insects to drink their final sips of nectar before hibernating. The clumps of ivy will also produce their curious greenish-yellow flowers from October onwards. These are particularly attractive to those prehibernating insects. It isn’t too late to cut down perennials to encourage a second crop of flowers. This is often done with hardy geraniums, nepeta and tradescantia. It is important to water

the roots well and give a liquid feed. Keep deadheading to encourage more blossoms. Sweet peas and even herbaceous clematis will benefit from regular attention and reward you with a continuous show. Scatter ripe seed where you would want it to grow. Self sown seedlings should be potted up and given a periods of intensive care before planting out where you want them when the conditions are right. Remember to keep watering! September and even early October can still be quite dry and warm, even if the nights feel much colder. Mr. Bowles grew a lot of succulents and tender exotics and we place the potted succulents and cacti along the walls and in front of the giant Wisteria. There are also many different exotic trees and shrubs in pots near the lake. Naturally, we have to be very vigilant during September in case of an early frost, so we are careful to keep abreast of weather forecasts. Most of the tender plants need the protection afforded by the glasshouses and conservatory, but there are some slightly less delicate exotics which need only to be draped in horticultural fleece, which is easily bought from garden

Gardening centers. The very organised gardener will start planting bulbs for spring in September, but more usually in October. September is a certainly the best time to order or buy bulbs which flower in spring, as the more interesting varieties tend to sell out quickly. Try not to plant too late, as it’s not much fun planting bulbs in very cold and damp soil! September is a good time, as the permanently planted herbaceous plants are still very clearly visible, so the bulbs can be more carefully positioned. It’s a shame when the crocus flowers are hidden under a canopy of early sprouting herbaceous leaves! A good tip is plant from the inside out of a bed, so you don’t tread on too many of the newly planted bulbs, as bruising the bulb causes them to rot. Here at Myddelton we leave as many of the more architectural seed heads in-situ right through the winter. Not only do they look beautiful when they glimmer with frost, but the seeds also provide a valuable extra source of food for all sorts of creatures during the winter.

It’s best to rake up fallen leaves regularly, as clumps of fallen leaves can cause patches of yellow on the lawn. The raked leaves can be dug into the soil or used as mulch. If you have a pond, make sure that you use a net to remove as many fallen plant material as possible, as large amounts of fallen leaves in small ornamental ponds can poison the water. Naturally some will be missed which shouldn’t be a problem. An autumn mulching with wellrotted manure and compost is beneficial to many shrubs and trees,

but it is not a good idea to do this to flower beds, as this can encourage very early growth of the herbaceous plants which might then be killed by frost and snow during the winter. A final tip: Always carry a note book with you when you visit a garden or a gardening centre. It is always worth noting down a new idea or the name of an unfamiliar plant that you admire! Happy gardening! Bryan Hewitt
