Micro elements in our film By Poppy and Esmai Kennedy.
Character â—Ś The character in our film is a mixed raced, with her grandad being black as it fits well with our plot. She will be scrawny and appear almost dead like so that she fits the purpose of the film. She will be the protagonist in the film and the antagonists will be a group of people that are torturing her throughout the film. There is no main antagonist in our film as we have decided to make it a group thing to show the dominants the antagonists has over the main character. The antagonists will be clearly defined in the film by their costume and makeup. Their costumes will change throughout depending on what the time period is in the film.
Setting â—Ś In horror films the setting is always dark, scary and always creates an atmosphere to put the audience at ease. The setting for our horror film is set in the time periods of history, these parts include Witchcraft, The KKK, the Holocaust and the old fashion Asylums. We have decided to set our film in these time periods as each of these times in history show torture, fear, pain and isolation and we both believe that these keys parts of history would create a really creative and torturous film.
Narrative ◦ The narrative of our film is a black girl being forced to live the pain and torture of history’s past. In order for her to escape the time period without being traumatically killed for good she has to find an object that symbolises that time period. We’re using 4 time periods of history in our film, these are; The Salem witch trials. The work of the Ku Klux Klan (The KKK). The Holocaust and finally the tragedies of being a patient In an asylum during the 50’s and 60’s. We’re setting it out as if it is a board game and that she symbolises the counter on the board game and she has to complete the board game in order to survive. We will make the film appear horror like and thrilling for the audience to watch. There will be some unpleasant scenes in the film but this needs to happen in order to really show the time period. ◦ 4 images of the kind of objects we will be using in our film
Codes and conventions ◦ These codes and conventions will make our horror film appear scary and horror like to the audience. The setting of the film will set the atmosphere and having key characters in the film will help to set our narrative. All of these key aspects will really help to set each scene perfectly and to really make our horror film come to life and to torture the audience. With our narrative plot it will help to create fear and tension as constantly our girl is on a mission to survive and of course it’s never going to be easy for her as she’s constantly getting targeted by evil people and getting tortured. She will be doing a lot of running away and capturing different objects and this simply creates lots of fear and tension as when the audience watch they don’t know what’s going to happen to her so will constantly be in fear until they find out. We will be using a variety of lighting to create fear and tension as we believe using the right lighting to set the scene will create an uneasy and unsatisfying atmosphere for the audience. Lots of dramatic, loud sound will help also to create lots of fear and tension as unexpected sound will cause the audiences heart rate to increase, showing they are fearful. Close up shots will also help our narrative to come alive and to create tension and fear for the audience as they will show up close the true pain and torture. ◦
Links to actual films ◦ As parts of our film will include lots of psychological events such as our Asylum scene which is set in the 1600s. The film wrong turn 4 2011 by Declan O’brien is a great example of Psychological. The way it is similar to our film is the fact that the Asylum has a troubled past which will allow the protagonist in each film to awaken their dark history. In the film shows mental people getting tortured which is something we wish to show in our film where our girl is getting tortured in the Asylum. ◦ These images show torture, pain and fear which we wish to show in our film.
