THINGS WE LIKE RIGHT NOW THE COUNTDOWN HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival will feature a mix of artists ranging from Pavement, Thom Yorke, Vampire Weekend, Them Crooked Vultures, LCD Soundsystem and Phoenix, to Tiësto, Faith No More, Deadmau5, David Guetta, MGMT and Public Image Limited. Set for Friday, April 16, Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18 at the beautiful Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. For tickets visit COACHELLA.COM and visit WWW.WEAREPOPTIMIST.COM/COACHELLA to preview all the artists playing the festival including streaming audio, artist bios, video, stage and set times. Search by day, genre or band or keep it simple and click on our “Coachella Pick List.” It’s too damn hot to make a good decision once you get there so plan your show in advance this year: WWW.WEAREPOPTIMIST.COM/COACHELLA “SECONDHAND SURESHOTS” A FILMED EXPERIMENT IN CREATIVE SOUND RECYCLING Dublab directors Bryan “Morpho” Younce and Mark “frosty” McNeill sent beatmakers Daedelus, J.Rocc, Nobody and Ras G on safari into L.A. thrift stores. With $5 dollars in their pocket, they were ordered to create new music from their dusty crate finds while the cameras filmed the entire process. The result is a mini-documentary about putting new life into old vinyl. The “Deluxe Super Set” is a true sound and vision experiment. Dublab scoured Southern California and rescued 500 gatefold LP covers from dusty thrift store bin obscurity. Hit+Run took the covers and screen-printed them by hand, making new visual masterpieces to house the first public release of “Secondhand Sureshots.” Stuffed in this package is all-exclusive material sampled and shredded into new forms fine-tuned to blow your mind: DVD, slipmats, 12” picture disc and hand-screened gatefold LP sleeves. DIRTY SWEET Day Friday, 3/19 Time 4:30pm (Indoor Stage) Dirty Sweet are an American rock band steeped in this nation’s musical roots, from country to R&B, gospel to classic rock and heavy metal to proto-grunge. A mixture of disparate influences such as The Rolling Stones, Gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and early U2 make them an interesting addition to today’s budding rock climate. The San Diego-based quintet’s name perfectly describes their two-pronged approach to writing and performing, what the NME calls “skuzzy, ass-shaking rawk ‘n’ roll” crossed with the ability to pick up their acoustic guitars and craft a melodic ballad. Produced by Doug Boehm [The Vines, Elliott Smith, Screaming Trees], “American Spiritual” is the band’s sophomore album and first for Los Angeles based indie Acetate Records. GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS Day Friday, 3/19 Time 5:30pm (Indoor Stage) Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are like a modern-day version of Tina Turner stroking the microphone in a spangled mini-dress while fronting the Rolling Stones circa “Sticky Fingers”. The proof is there for all to hear on the band’s third album for Hollywood Records, hitting this spring, which marks an artistic breakthrough for a vital young band caught in the act of fulfilling its immense promise. Little wonder that Grace and her cohorts have chosen to title the disc, directly and emphatically, “Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.” URL: www.gracepotter.com TWITTER: www.twitter.com/gracepotter MYSPACE: myspace.com/gracepotterandthenocturnals

SAINT MOTEL Day Thursday, 3/18 Time 11:00pm (Indoor Stage) The explosive, cinematic, indie-pop band Saint Motel is, to put it best, hard to resist, and damn fun. In the world of Saint Motel, nothing bows to convention: Stages become forests and living rooms, and shows become kaleidoscopic mind explosions in 3D. This theatrically creative world is due in large part to the fact that the gentlemen of Saint Motel share a distinct interest in cinema. The band’s keen visual sensibility has yielded an array of stunningly original videos that accompany songs from their recently released debut EP “ForPlay,” released via the band’s On The Records label. The physical or digital version of “ForPlay” includes the free added bonus of the beautiful, ultra-conceptualized videos for each song. THE TENDER BOX Day Saturday, 3/20 Time 2:50pm (Indoor Stage) “Every once in a while we discover a singer or a band that just makes us flip our shit. This is one of those times!” – Perez Hilton Tremendous, incandescent British rock music is probably the last thing that comes to mind when you think of South Gate, L.A. So it’s a breathtaking revelation when you hear the chiming guitars and swooning vocals of The Tender Box. Frequently headlining L.A. hipster hot spots such as Club Moscow and Hang the DJ’s, The Tender Box have been highly praised by L.A.’s legendary D.J. Rodney Bingenheimer, frequently spun on Indie 103.1 and Sirius Radio and have toured with bands ranging from the Goo Goo Dolls to She Wants Revenge. The band is currently recording their second EP with producer Jack Douglas (Aero Smith, Cheap Trick, John Lennon) which is set for release this April.
