WILLOVv SPRINGS V. IND-UP ..... rg.~illow SpHn.gs International Racewa~k is a driver’s Course. It is Z i/g miles of black asphal.t running up a hillside from the desert floor of the northwest portion of the Antelope Valley° It has about :nine turns, two of which are quite tong and sweeping and end with a tight tnrn requiring the driver to have constant attentiveness and some bit of courage to go w;ry fast an:d sti!l stay on the course. .From fhe longest and fastest tur~a, number 9, there is the hook onto a straight about half a. mile long. Turn Z, the o~her big one exits onto a short slight down grade portion and then through a tight uphill left to number 4. From turn 4 to 5 is rather scary, being sharply downhill with a curve and camber change thrown in to keep the drivers adrenalin flowing° Then turn 5 is a blind left and the road goes back uphill, then down at turn ~ to the flat, fla~out turn 7 and around- to the big turns 8 and 9. The race track is also interesting to the spectator since so much of it is visible

from the start-finish, and pit area. It was here that PCA-LA held a time trials event on the weekend of November ll-iZ, 1967. The whole course was used, but chicanes were used before turn 5~, at turn 7, and also before turn 9 to add to the driver interest~ This was also a .safety measure to slow the cars down. To allow plenty of space and time for all entrants to use the track it was planned to limit the entry list to i00. As it Worked out, 99 people signed up to drive and some 79 of these made two timed runs on Sunday. With such a large entry, with driver skills ranging from just beginning to expert, some incid, ents/accidents could be expected. As expected they did occur, but withc, ut injury, due to the good fortune and skill of al!.involved. Only 2 cars were dam,_gec~ by ].eaving~the track. One only dented a

Even wi~h~lS~& 18 cars on ~h~ t~ack ]~t omze t~zre ~as little difficulty and ~any thrilling l~ps werc emjoyed~ This ~s a t~ibute to the Po~sche Pusher’s driving skill. Instruction was also given by Alan Johnson, assisted by so~e of the more experienced entrants to anyone who wanted ~o know the best way around t.he course. Any such ev~n~ ~ * requires a tot’0f peopl~ do~n~ ~ Io~ of ha~d work to make it a success.

This event was a succe~s~

it probably tool< more thar~ the usual ~umber of

people to nn~ke i~ go because the work and responsibilities were spread around so that even the workers could practice and compete their cars. Another reason was that the response by LA Region’smembers in v,olunteering [o work ~as so enthusiastic that:many jobs were split~p to give everyone a piece of the action. The response fr0~the club members was most gra[ifying, Even non-members, competitors ~nd:probably S0nne passer~-by caught the enthusiasn~ and pitched in to help out~ Some drove up from LA j~st to ~ork. This response made the event possible, ~he great eutry list and clean competition and good driving on a great course ~d~ i~ worthw~’~e. There were too many people helping on and off the track to allow n~a’ming the~ all here (some 50 to 60 .individuals) but the help was appreciated an~~our thanks to them, And to you workers and entrants individually, thanks from ~he event co-chairmen; we hope you had as much fun as we did, Nick Friesen and Don Morris

ALL MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE The time for renewal for your rnernbe:rship is near and soon you will receive the statement from National ’PCA for i9~)8 dues. New members enrolled during !.967 and especia.!ly those who paid a full IZ ~0nths dues with their applicat’i~n £ ~hort time.ago may mistakenly believe billing tobe an error. I3y ~ay0f explanation to these members, National >~A maintains the ro@ster by calendar year and bills at th~ end of each year dues in ~dvance for the ensuing year. The billing for new members for the year following their enrollment, will be an amount prorated for each month remaining in the year following d~e last month of~their first 12 months dues payment, thereby charging them to the Calendar year schedule. It is important that prorated dues be paid when billed as no additional notice, will be given by National k~hen the first lZ mo~tE,~eriod of ~embership is completed and nonpayment wi].i automatically drop’[He me,tuber from the all of the m~mbership, your B0a.rd:.:(the head and heart 0f.the club) wishes to

Some spen~ the afternoon looking around the area. "v~ould you believe the fast time turned in was by Roy Roger’s Long Horn Special? ? ? l~’s a Lincoln with a silver-dollar dash board.

The fol!owing article was stolen from the December issue of £OAD & TRACK by Don Morris: Vve have had several articles on radial tires but developments keep comJ.ng so fast it’s hard to keep u9o First of all,~_r would. ]i.ke to exp!ode one widely disseminated " myth about radialbelted tires. This is about as follows: "These tires stick better but when the limit of adhesion is exceeded ghere is a sudden and drastic breakaway.’" This is absolutely not true~ Since Michelin has never (to our kgowledge) published any slip angle vs cornering power curves I discussed this subject with Uhlenhaut of Mercedes a few years ago, hence the above rather positive statement,

H0~ver,.i,t !~:t:rue that the breakaway~curve for the Michelin X tire falls off a ......little, sooner;~ i. eo the limit of a<nes’~ ion occurs at a lower slip angle and at a hSgher.spee.d (for~:a given corner radius). So the radial tire requires a little mo~e.~driver ski.!l at the ragged edge and the higher speed also can mean more "troub!e" .~ ~= n~.o.re factor to he considered in this battle of the bias. That is the There is ¯,~n new low profile, wide tread conventional tires, in round nu~-nbei-s one used to be ~bl~ to,say the radials could take a given corner 5 tc I0 rnph faster°

Today

the differez~ce is almost negligible -- on dry surfaces. The radial-belted tires are still superior in the wet, for tread life, and lower rolling resistance. Today, nearly every tire manufacturer is offering radial-belted tires. ]But they aren’t a]_l identical; each has sonde minor technical differences~ The newest rib tire conies iro~m Continental° Their patented belt rnaterial, which they call "CRG" appears to be a woven synthetic ~Tnatcrial that is inextensible and "combines the flexibility of textile m~ith the strength of steel’}
