Roger Bursch and Alan Johnson told a capacity crowd at the Septe..m~ b.er Meeting how to prepare the Porsches for "vViilO%vSp~ings. Some of their points were:

~"

a.

On older cars, the disc~ coup!~ing’~the stde.r~ing box should,be checked for cracks and strength. ¯ ~, .~

b.

Elexib!e brake hoses should be inspected for cuts or cracks.

c.

All lug nuts should be ~,:orq.ued.

d.

Ball check valve covers are worthwhile for the long turns.

e.

Stoplights should function properly,

f,

]Donit drive with a crached wooden steering wheel.

go

The exhaust stinger should be adequately supported.

h.

Frendo brake linings are worthwhile.

i.

Stick to factory specs for ignition timing ....

j.

Lubricate throttle linkage wear points.

Alan closed the meeting with a shoz’t chalk talk ab"out the correct line around the Willow Springs circuit. TECH COLUMN The following meaty article was stolen from the October issue of "Northeast News", official publication of :~hq Northeast P~egion, Inc. PC7~:: "AUTOMATICALLY A SPORTE WITH:A RORSCHE"by Sue and Gil Meyer It isn.’:t difficult to be a sport while driving a Porsche, all you have to do is depress the clutch, shift into gear engage the clutch according to your own private feel and away you go in a driving drear~o It’s easy but how many of us hesitate to let someone else drive our little gems for fear of their treatmen~ of the clutch’ Wives, girlfriends and most:real6 fi’iends just can’t seem to shift the way the owner does and they soon learn that happiness is as a passenger. ...... The-Fa:dtbry recognized this individual trait in the owners of their cars as early as 19.-50".ii T~iS;.year they solved the problem but the solution has not yet been incorporated in cars on th’~ market. It rna? bet~L~ it fears that the purists will picket, protest, or even walk. Some owner’s would rather shift than shift. .-.

It’s here! Porsche’s newest automotive release - the semi-automatic transmission and it is called the Sport-o-matic. It will be available with the six cylinder engine only and hopefully will be only about $250 more ..... V~;hat is it? From the cockpit the only thing different is that there is no clutch pedal. Underneath ~hings are slightly different. ~n essence the shifting is accomplished ~!ectrically whenyou touch the gear shift stick. We say touch because the electrical switches are so sensitive ~hat it is impossible to ~’beat" the clutch. A nice touch has been added in. the form of a torque converter between the engine and the clutch. This enables the car to be left in gear ’at a standstill without stalling the engine. ]By clever design this converter allows the driver to select any~gear he wan~s at any time. How is it to drive? We had the pleasure of driving the only prototype in the U.S. at the Tri-State~P.c~rscherama the w~ekend of September 8-10. POAC sent it up for test-drives and to get an idea of the impressions of PCA ~-nen~bers. The hardest thing to get used to is the missing Clutch pedal. %Vith the engine going you gulp a little at just putting it into gear without downing .the clutch but you do it and just before the lever is completely fo}ward the hidden clutch engages and the car settles into first much the same as any U. So car witL a full automatic transmission. Take your foot off the brake¯ and~the car’iust sits there. No creep. Press the gas and it creeps forward. As the RPM’s rise the car accellerates until you decide to shift. The only thing noticed is a momentary revving of the engine while the electric clutch opens and closes. Speed shifting tan be done with the gas pedal to the floor! The transmission is ideal for al! of us who drive in town. No more shifting, just start off in second gear and leave it there. The converter will get you off at a light and the 7000 i~PM]imit on the engine gives you 90 mph in second. No more worry about keeping the revs up, For your competition weekends you !_ave all four gears available as fast as the arm can move plus the added benefit of the converter which gives you an infinite variety of power combinations. Mechanically it is the same dependable four-apeed gearbox, the same clutch now electrically activated, ¯and a ~ydraulic torque converter before the clutch. The converter is unique in several ways: it is ~e smallest on the ~narket, it uses engine oil from your crankcase and it is cooled by your oil cooler. When you change your oil it gets a clhange too, although it can~¯~ot be drained unless you rernove it. Several changes will be made before this is marketed: the sensors on the s~hifting stick will be made adjust~bl~ so that the car can he set up to shift according to the owner’s~ taste. V~e!fo~ndthis one too sensitive° a bit of a bump with the knee sent it int0~open position. The ¢!onVertef is to be redesigned to give more pick-up from a stop, we found it a bit ,.sluggish, ~This was borne out at the accelleration trials where a good 911 time four the well kno¯wn 91i was 15.7 sec. with terminal speed of 93.8 mph. The Sport-o-matic did 17.7 and 83 mph. Anot~er prototype has just won its first major race at Nurnburg~ing with an improved¯ n~odel of the transr~ission. All in all, we th~n~zthis is a val.uable feature for the U. So market where the traffic makes it .difficult’to properiydlive a 911 and especially since it will allow the car

~t0pro~e~iy be driven by everyone in the family including those who like to shift and those who just can’t do it right .... Curt Kueb!er - Technical Chairman
