JUNE MEETING

Back to the schoolhouse for the June Meeting! Second Monday of the month, 10th day of June, 8 PM, in the auditorium of the Alexandria Avenue Elementary School, 4211 Oakwood Ave., L.A. For the entertainment portion of the meeting, Bruce Munch has agreed to show his slides ofthe 1967 racing season. To start the season, Bruce attended the Sebring 12 Hours of Endurance. Then later on in the year, he and his wife attended the Competition Press and Autoweek Racing Tour to Europe. The tour encompassed the cities of Amsterdam, London, Paris, Stuttgart, Bonn, Cologne and Leige. Also included were %he Grand Prix of Holland at Zandsvoort, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Grand Prix of Belgium at Spa and Trips to the Mercedes % Porsche factories. Whether you are an automobile racing enthusiast or would just like to see the European tourist attractions, we’re sure you will enjoy this program. The May Meeting at Schlitz Brown Bottle Room was a sell out of 115 for dinner and some who came later for the meeting. For a while it seemed there would be standing room only. Whether the program or FREE BEER was the attraction it was one of our best attended meetings this year. To Duane Alan, deserved thanks for securing the location and to all the others who arranged and helped in the program. Maintain the enthusiasm! Be at the June Meeting! Remember, guests always welcome! SEE YOU THERE! Ray Cooper, Vice-Pres.

minutes of ma

meeting_

The combined Dinner/Business meeting was held in the Brown Bottle Room at the Schlitz Brewery, in Van Nuys. 130 thirsty members and guests gathered to enjoy the FREE BEER. Eamly comers started arriving at 6PM, soon the room was brimming PORSCHE people renewing friendships reminiscing past events. A sumptious buffet was served at 7:45. President Kuebler opened the meeting at 8:50, expressing the club’s thanks to the host and to the caterers for the delicious food. Minutes of the April meeting were approved as they appeared in Porscherama. V.P., Ray Cooper welcomed many new members as well as many regular members we have not seen at recent meetings. Special mention was made of Duane Allen’s effomts in arranging this successful dinner meeting. Treasurer Ray Kornfeld reported a bank balance of $i,005.00. Peter Luelsdorf thanked Paul Magaris g Roger Munn for their work on the Rose Bowl Gymkhana. Peter presented the awards for this event. It was announced that the Santa Barbara, June event, Memorial Day Races has been cancelled. A June Bug Warm-Up Gymkhana will be held by Orange Coast Region. Riverside Region is planning a tour to the Briggs Cunningham Museum. The LA region will have a Slalom at Adams go-cart track in Riverside, June 23. Details in Porscherama. Roger W&gner displayed a portion of the new rally timer. He g several members are presently assembling parts for the timer. Next Tech meeting will be at V.W. Pacific, Culver City. Members will be treated to a demonstration of the new V.W. fuel injection system. Mee~ing scheduled for May 22. Ron Ramage, editor, received many compliments for his up-grading of Porscherama. Ron asked members attending other regions to contribute articles for the paper. Curt closed the formal meeting at 9:30. Entertainment for the evening was provided by "los gringos" participating in the Via~e a Mexico, last fall. SparklinE narration for these slides and movies was by our own Bob Hope (Nick Friesen). These pictures were beautiful and I know whet the appetite of many of us to take the same trip in the future. LYLE ARNOLD, Sec.

ROSE BOWL.. ROSE BOWL.. ROSE BOWL Pasadena, famous for it’s little old ladies, charming narrow winding roads that seem to go nowhere, and of course Roses on New Year’s Day, mould be an event for the month all by itself if you took me without a roadmap, sextent or compass, blindfolded me, set me down on a charming, narrow winding road, and then asked me to find my way out. Such was the case on

April 21st, when my loyal Pontiac Ventura and I ( Speedster having operation fo~ hemorrhoid by He~ Dooto~ Kueble~ ) just happened to mlss our intemded off ramp and decided to find the ROSE BOWL by taking the next off ramp. Simple! During the next half hour I was pmivileged by sevemal glimpses of the famous stadium as I drove directly over the top of two ( 2 ) mountains adjacent to the Rose Bowl Valley ( How many times will it take before I learn to always bring my good old Thomas Roadmap ). Finally I arrived at what seemed to be the bottom of the hills and without too much further trouble ( followed ) my ears and the smell of Castrol ) I made it to the parking lot. Not too many enthuasists had turned up that early but before long several fmiendly Pasadena Policemen, bicyclists, Sunday morning tourists, a fire engine complete with crew and finally amound 150 PORSCHES ( with inhabitants ) came to see what was going on. Well, the day progressed, the trade market was opened and selling was relatively slow at the start but by the end of the day a very lovely brass OOGAH horn was purchased from Lyle Arnold by Don Morris, I purchased Duane Alan’s complete set of Christophorus ( 35 pounds worth ), Nick Freisen sold his tires and I’m sure several other highly important transactions took place. And that is just about the story of the Swap Meet. The Speed portion ran very smoothly, Dawn Waugaman made a strong competition in the soft drink concession. Vern Covert’s 90~ door wasn’t certain if it’s proper position was open or closed. Approximately 50 cars competed, there were guests

from SantaBarbara, Riverside~ OranKe Coast, POC, and i think a couple of LA ~uys turned up. WOMEN ~D.Waugaman P.Molinelli J.Davis H.Sevey

June Teaser It’s a day at ~he races and 5 Porsches are si~Zing on the pme-gmid waiting fop their turn to ~un. Each is a different color, driven by men of d~fferen% na%ional~%~es, w~th different types of cars, tires and naturally numbers. _i~ The American drives a White car. ~. The Carrera Speedster is driven by a Dutchman. Goodyear GP tires are on the red car. The German drives on Continental Radials. The Red car is immediately to the right (your right) of the green one~u/ _~ Cam no ..... 35~. is a 5 speed 912 ..~< The Silver car sports no. ~8;.~ ~. The middle car sits on Semperits~/ ~. The first car on the left, is driven by the Swissman~/ i0. The man with no. ii0~is next to the man in the 90~. !q~. Car. no. 18~sits next to the 911 Targa. 12. by June 9th wins a prize for its sende~ at the June meeting. (PCA members must be pmesent to win.)

Apologies to Clive Cmaig fop omitting his name fmom the cormect answem list for the Apmil Tease~. The commect answem to the May Teasem was 100 miles. All solutions ~eceived were comrect~ which indicates that the pmoblem may have been too simple. Congratulations to Bob Briffett, John Molinelli, camole Mulligan, Bill Leflang and Alan Cmane. Bill Leflang won the award, a supem lamge Pomsche cmest decal fmom Royze, Inc. of Inglewood, at the May meeting since Allan Cmane did not attend. Allan’s solution follows: The addition of 9 to any one-digit numbe~, 90 to any two-digit numbe~ 900 to any three-digit number etcetera always ~esults in a sum having one digit more than, but the same digital total as the omiginal numbem. 900 plus 12~ (digital total 6) equals 10~ (digital to~al 6) The highest possible diKital sum obtainable within a Kiven numbem of digits derives fmom 9s. 9, 99, 999, 9999 etcetema Themefore we can choose 999 or any fouP-digit number ending in 999 (except 9999 which added to 900 would pmoduce a five-digit numbem) as the former milage reading and the total of this numbeP and 900 as the odometer reading at the start of the tPip. Example: OdometeP meading @00 miles ago - 8999 dig total 35 " at start of t~ip - 9899 " " 35 " 36 New, high~ digital ~o~al at - 9999 " Answer, PeKaPdless of which se~ of odometeP figures is chosen is 100 miles. JUNE TECH

MEETING

,Are you curious just how much power your Porsche is delivering at the rear whells? Is that noisy new muffler really giving 10% more rear wheel horsepower? Stu Hag~art (remember the Teeh Meeting at Haggart’s shop) as a represmntative for Autoscan, Inc. has offered to demonstrate the Autoscan Layeook chassis dynomometer. As time allows attendees Porsches from 356A thru 900 series will be chosen for dyno power tests. Meet at Autoscan, at 8 PM, Wednesday, June 26th at 3641 Holrege Ave., in L.A., but bordering on Culver City. Holrege is a short North-South street, South of Jefferson Blvd. and intersecting with it. It’s about 3 blocks West of La Cienega Blvd. ~ Rodeo intersection. Plenty of free parking. The April Tech Meeting was entertaining as well as enlightening. Wes Saylor of Empire Lubricants (Castrol, Kendall etc.) showed two racing movies. A discussion followed about engine ~ transmission lubricants. Topics covemed ran f~om viscosity index additives to raeinK engine~oils. Also, Vern Coverts was on display in the parking lot. Roger Wagner, Tech. Chrman.

TECH TIP Next time you want to raise the side of your Po~sche and a floor jack is available, try usin~ both the hydraulic jack and the stock Porsche lifter-upper. Just put the stock jack in place in its body socket and place the blue foot into the floor jack’s swivel cradle. This pemmi~s a quick lift with no danKe~ oF bending the body pan. The teehnlque is a must for 900 series cars at all ~ech inspections, but it works fine for all models (even VW’s). Cu~t Kueble~, Pres.

MISSION: POSSIBLE ? A~e~ ~wo yea~s my 912 and I finally took my favorite trip, s~aigh~ ~h~ough ~o Boston. My reluc~an~ brother acted as copilot, (his first Porsche ride, and it was some ride!).

We left Encino at 6 PM on a Tuesday and reached Lexington, Mass. in ~g hours to~al ~ime. The return trip ~ook ~7 hours due Zo "Folice B~utali~y", (I can’t imagine how that happened). Thanks ~o Pmez Kuebler’s refinement of my homespun tuning the 912 never missed a bea~. The only pmoblem mechanically was that the starter refused to operate at the second gas stop, 660 miles out, and didn’t cooperate till it rested overnight. On the way back the same thing happened and all is normal now. It’s times like this that we Porsche Pushers really earn ou~ name (by hand). Before Taking a trip like This be sure to check out your codriver, mine could only sleep while driving. However when we hit rain at Tulsa, Oklahoma and I quit, he found that the main kept him awake and he made fine time clear to Chicago, in a deluge. Thank heavens the storm was still there ~ days later when we returned. Gas consumption was 21.6 m.p.g. 8 a quart of oll was added every 650 miles. Continental 165 SP-380 tires with 32 Ibs. front £ 34 ibs. rear were amazing in the Pain with no aqua planing at high speeds g no slipping on curves my brother took while I left my finger prints permanently embedded in the door handle. Wheel balance stayed perfect over the whole range in spite of a i00 yd. stretch of washed out road that I slammed thru beyond Flagstaff in the wee hours. On the way out we didn’t see a single Porsche from Needles to the Mass. line. On the way back we saw only 3 over the same stretch. Not one with a rally number over the headlight. Forget it Joe Schneider! It would take the entire L.A. region membership just to man the check points. Anyone know whePe to get a $500. paint job for $200.? A1 Gray HELP OUT AT THE JUNE BUG Orange Coast Region’s biggest event of the year, the June 16th JUNE BUG SLALOM, is shaping up bigger than expected. MILES JACKSON JOINS A SUB-SECRET ORGANIZATION OR HOW PCA DID IN INTRAMATICS I’m sume we know all thmee of the above -- if not, let’s introduce one another. Readem, "this is Miles Jackson", Miles Jackson, "This is meadem". (Miles Jackson is one of the youngem "oldem" membems of PCA-LA.) Everyone here has met PCA but I’m no± so sume PCA has met everyone. Sub-seemet omganization, of which many of us belong to fop bettem om womse, is intmoduced as mammiage. AND, we all know that Intramatics is the computem mate papem matchem -- not papem mate marcher. We all mead with enthusiasm about Intmamatics and how they have solved the loneliness pmoblems of thousands of people (little known to thousands of people is that they have solved Intmamatic’s lonely problem by sending happy money -- tons of it). Well, on with the adventume. Miles Jackson was cmowd control chaimman for the Willow Spmings Windup at Willow Springs. (Named aftem some spot in the desemt wheme a pile of old musty bed springs weme dumped undem a willow tmee -- the willow tree has smnce been chopped down, as those of you who have nevem been theme undoubtedly didn’t know.) Someone built a Pace track theme, "one of womld’s most challenging" . . ¯ because you have to bmave sand, sun, wind, and no restmooms. So wouldn’t you know, PCA voted to have a Mace theme duping Novembem last year. Last yeam was happy to have us theme beaause this would be the ist big time tmials event PCA-LA would sponsom and "Last Year" needed a big event to make enough money to pay fop a Christmas Pamty to which only a few people would come so that PCA could bmeak even and also beat Intmamatics and last of all, so Miles could ~oin the sub-secmet omganization. Anyone who knows Miles, knows he is an omganization man, and that is pmimaPily why he was cmowd contmol chaimman. Yeah Miles! Entem here, the culpress -- the one mesponsible. This is one of the cutest culpmesses in the whole PCA-LA Region, and does she have flat feet (fmom standing on the accelematom so hard). We all know this wonderful chick, provider of bread cm~mbs -be~te~ known as the opema~om a~ ~he hot dog stand, well deserved samcasms, fast dmiving, and many humomous moments Namely -Dawn W. " Well, Dawn, providem of b~ead cmumbs was providing tom the lamgest Rmoup of "bimds" ever and so Dawn needing help invited a friend of lSke f~om afar over the mountains. Now Carol, being a trusted friend of l~ke, was liked by everyone of ~O~S~, especially Hil~s -- fastss~ Datsun d~ve~ West of the ~ecos. No swea~, M~les sold ~he Datsun so he is now in a sem~ £ood standing posltion known to eve~yo~ as sitting, all because Miles % ~a~ol We~Z off to investigate a mine. (?) Miles suggested R Camol, being the Ziny, cute, vivacious blonde she is, said, "Why not". After all, a giml e~uea%ed at the Univ. of Mexico-Americana, who

hitchhiked thru the Yuccatan, worked in Africa $°travelled t~ru Europe wouldn’t be afraid of Miles! Attention workers -- remember the elapsed time when Chairman of the Datsun relief run failed to brine relief? Easy fellows -it was for a good cause ~ you helped The sub-secret omganizaTion along with your contribution. "Well," Miles said, "Cool Baby." Little did he know that the temp. was really 85° % Miles became afriend afar. Figure it out, afriend afar of afriend afar (does this make them cousins? or kissing cousins?). Miles, in spite of PCA being a competitive ganization (remember PCA beat Intramatics -- or I should say at this point of the story, was in the process of beating them) was losing out -- he really "Cool Baby" liked the girl or as all Hippies say, "Let’s share some o’that Aeapulco Gold, Cool Baby!" Miles, being desperate, (I bet That none of you readers Mnew Miles was desperate; Desperate, this is Miles; Desperate was Miles’ middle name) joined the sub-secret organization, the tool of the capitalist nations, that group dedicated to the preservation of our ways and To knot Tying -- the boy scouts, sometimes known as the girl scouts. Right? Right! Now, this is what Miles wanted more than anything -- to know how to tie knots! And that is how PCA got Miles and Carol into a subsecret organization and beat Intramatics at its own game. Now read - you the Porsche lover (you know how it is with a Porsche) come on out to the next event $ meet another readerPorsche lover. Who knows, the next event may even be chairmanned by Nick Friesen, famous for his fast driving, quick drinking & wife~ sampling tours. ~he wine sampling Tour this year will be during pressing time. Tome watch the grape pickers walk on the grapes. DONATED BY THE GHOST WRITER % GHOST WRITERESS. All kidding aside, CONGRATULATIONS to Miles Jackson % Carol Roberts, married April 27th. Welcome to the sub-secret organization!!

CONGRATULATIONS ame in order fom Dave Kalbach and Ma~y Ann Ledge~wood MARRIED May 18Th at ST. Marthas Episcopal Church in West Covina. Reception was held at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Led£erwood, Hacienda Hei£hts. The couple will be residing in Alhambra after a Aea~uloo honeymoon.

1968 Our bigges~ dinner meeting ever was arranged by Ray Cooper, Ray Kornfeld, Duane Alan g their willing helpers at Zhe Schlitz Brown Bottle Room. Plenty of good beer, excellent food and a fun trave~ by Nick Friesen and crew meanl a grea~ Zime fo~ the i~0 Porsche enthusiasts attending. Long distance driving award went to Ada and Vern Covert who flew low from Florida in their 90~. It is hoped ~ha~ Zhe PCA’ems not a~ Zhe Schlitz blast are feeling well soon. Everyone should s~art planning now for our summer dinner dance, July 13th (Saturday) at Don Ricardo’s. Duane Alan is arranging for more of that good food and drinks will be plenty, so bring a Po~sche-owning gues~ and have a bunch - of fun, that is. Tech Activities undem the able direction of Chairman Roger Wagner include interesting tech sessions and field t~ipg. Watch fo~ a maintenance and tune-up session later this year. Activities Chaimman Peter Luelsdorf with his committee of eventmasters is doing terribly well so far this year. Witness the April Rose Bowl gymkhana and Swap Meet with 50 cars entered and 150 people present. The June Slalom at Adams Go Cart Track will be even bigger with champ Kodani in charge. This event will serve as good tmaining practice fo~ the PCA Califomnia Autocross Championship at Santa Mamia eamly in August. See you %he~e. This month’s meeting at Alexandria Avenue School features wo~id tmavelem Bruce Munch with a witty pictorial recap of his European macing circuit ~oum. BE THERE!! Curt Kueblem, President.
