NO, THE OTHER GREEN CAR by Cliff Yost (Note: another tale of Holtville told by yet another member and witness to the dastardly doings of the famous fearless auto racing team. Herein they have ~. on the CHP-ed.) With another great Holtville event behind us, Bob Cogen and I started back to Los Angeles. Inthe thriving city of Brawley we picked up a third car for ~r caravan, none other than Milt Minter and his almost look alike brother. Leaving Brawley I was leading in my blue coupe followed by Bob and his green coupe.

Milt brought up the rear in a maroon 912.

For the next half hour or so we bombed along the highway passing everything 1, 2, 3. As I pulled up behind another car and got ready to pass, I noticed that it had "the silhouette". The sun was just right, at an angle into my eyes, but dead ahead, no mistake "the silhouette" of the California Highway Patrol. I slowed down.

I did what every Porsche driver does in this situation.

So now we had 1, 2, 3, & 4, (#1 Black & White, #2 blue, #3 green, #4 maroon) very sedately driving into the sunset. Suddenly the CHP pulled over to the right shoulder of the road a~d let us all pass. In my rear view mirror I saw him do a 180° and go back whence he came. The road ran along the Salton Sea. It was relatively straight but full of dips. Milt bombed by me. (Milt later told us that he had always wanted to drive a Porsche fiat out on this road.) I accelerated. My speed reads 100, I05, ll0 and Milt was slowly pulling away. The road was a washboard, up and down. When you were down you couldn’t see what was ahead or behind you. When you were up all you could see were the tops of the dips in front and behind you. The road, in the distance, gently turned and went uphill. Milt was now about a mile ahead of me going over the hill. I took my foot out of the carburetors and my speed dropped to about 75 MPH. I made the gentle turn and started uphill. As I came over the top I could see a lot of cars at the bottom of the hill, about 1/2 mile away. At first I thought Milt had lost it. His car was about 30 yards off to the right of the highway. Maybe the CHP had set up a speed trap. I pulled onto the shoulder of the road and stopped.

What luck.

No accident

or speed trap. John and Pare Lipham, who were towing their speedster, were having their problems. It was flat tiresville and no spare.. As Milt was helping jack up the speedster, I volunteered the use of my spare. I was removing my spare tire when the CHP car pulled up.

The officer

motioned for me to come over. With leaded feet I heeded his beckon and call. "Where is the green car?" he asked me. Just then Bob topped the hill with his very green car and started down towards us. Poor Bob, he still had on his stinger. "There" I said, motioning towards Bob "is a green car". The officer looked over his shoulder, then at me, and replied, "There were 3 cars, blue, green and maroon and pointed to mine then to Milt’s car. "Where is the green one"? Again I told him that there was a green one coming. The officer looked, shook his head and said, "No, not that green car, the other green car." By then Bob had pulled in behind me and was getting out of his car. The officer looked around again, then slowly drove away. We got John and Pam back on the road. Everyone agreed to stop at Sambos in Indio for coffee as we took off. Over the next rise the CHP waited again. The same one who had stopped looking for the "other" green car. We stopped at the next gas station for a nature call.

Then back onto the

highway. And again the same CHP car roared by from the opposite direction, looking us over. At Sambos the "members" of the fearless auto racing remm gathered again. Over coffee, we decided that we had all been pretty lucky. Needless to say, the rest of the trip was done slowly and uneventfully. Still wonder where that "other" green car went through. honorary membership in the club.

TRY THIS ONE?!

It’s Willow Springs time again and it seems that the whole Southern California membership of PCA has turned out to compete. There are 5 gleaming Porsches lined up side by side once pre-grid. They are 5 different model Porsches, and are S different colors, naturally have different numbers, drivers from different PCA regions and curiously enough all S use different brands of motor oii. i. The machire from the Riverside Region sits next to an immaculate 911S. 2. A Los Angeles Region entry is driving his newly reconditioned and race prepared 904 for the first time. 3. The driver of ca~ No. 130 looks over at the Castrol insignia on the competitor next to him. 4. A beautiful Carrera 2 Sports No. 44. 5. The engine with KendaRin its crankcase sits next to car No. 26. 6. An Orange Coast member is sitting to the right (your right) of the fellow from Santa Barbara. 7. Car No. 14 uses Pennzoil. 8. A red car stands out strong with 2 other Porsches on either side. 9. The first machine next to the spectator fence on the left is the 911S. I0. Valvoline is preferred by the driver of the white car. 11. The Spyder is naturally silver. 12. San Diego’s machinery uses Castrol Oil. 13. The bine machine is driven by an Orange Coast member, 14. The driver of the E Production speedster claims that his good fortune with the engine gomes from the use of Shell RoteIla. How about it, boys and girls, here is the question. Who is driving the black Porsche and who is wearing No. 177 Cive up? Not yet, because the first correct answer that comes to the following address will be the winner of a free entry at ~Villow Springs, for both husband and wife (or girlfriend). How about that? All Southern California PCA members who get their hands on this mag are eligible, however the right to race for free cannot be transferred

release mounting bracket, a readable pressure gauge, an inexpensive recharge kit and ease of operation. For easy clean up you can’t beat CO2 or Freon extinguishers which leave no residue at all but their size for over a 5B:C rating is prohibitive. The "all purpose" chemical ammonium phosphate would be a good choice since it also does a decent job on Class A fires but it forms a sticky crust when heated which has to be scraped’off.

JETTING CARBURETORS by Dieter Vongehr/San Diego Region When modifying an engine it is often necessary to re-jet carburetors in order to have them ~ rk properly, On all carburetors used on the Porsche there are 3 jets which you might have to change. (I) Idle jets, control the amount of fuel for the idle circuit which extends to about 3000 RPM with light load such as cruising in first or second gear with small throttle opening. (2) Main jets, control the amount of fuel for the whole RPM range.

Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) tests and rates extinguishers as to class and size of fire capability. The ratings go in steps so that a rating of 5B:C means that the extinguisher will put a class B fire Of size 5 out but not the test fire of size 10. In June, 1969, UL cut down on the number of different sizes they test and changed the scale slightly but a higher number still refers to a bigger fire. A 10B:C rating is approximately twice as good as 5B:C. To give you an idea of the magnitude involved on the old scale, a iB rated extinguisher had to discharge at least 8 seconds and extinguish a blaze of three gallons of naptha in a 2- i/2 square foot pan. An 8B rating referred to a fire of 25 gallons of naptha in a 20 square foot pan. Automobiles need an extinguisher for Classes B and C. To satisfy Class C requirements, it need only use a non-conductive chemical. Other considerations in our choices incinded size, weight, messiness, a good quick

(What ever that means. Corky also included some case histories in his article which foilow-ed). Want to talk with others who use the additive and know the resdlts? JB will put in touch. I put in a pint in my last 6000’er So far (572) no startling developments. One of the things that decided me on trying JB was a transmission on the bench at Century West t~aat had ran 800 miles without oil--only JB additive. Yup. It Was scorched a little, but it kept on going and operated as called on for quite a few.miles (try it with your own private additive and see what happens). The original mechanic put in the ]B but forgot the oil. Simple as that (he’s now looking for another job). One case history involves Century West’s SCCA competition 911.
