Since the first Porsche was built back ~n 1949, the f~ctory has improved itself yea~ after year in technology. It seems hard to believe sometimes that they can i~prove on a particular ~ode]., but they always do. One of the nice things about Porsche ~s that the factory doesn’t put anything on the car that isn’t funct:onal.

Porsches. In the next year or two, we will be experiencing a totally new car design - a front-engined, water-cooled 911 series car and the total redoing of the 914. It will also be front-engined and water-cooled. The 914 is to be some type of a Dasher. I must admit, when the 74 911’s were introduced, I was somewhat critical of them. I thought they were too slow, a little too much plastic and too high off the ground, not to ment].on price. Well, maybe I am getting old, because now I don’t think they’re slow, there isnt that much plastic, and you can lower them. As far as the price goes, I’~ not that old, so let s not talk about it! Well, the Lltt~e Mountain Goat Ral[ye is over, and it really was the big one! Ask a friend who was there. Twenty-four eager cars and drivers gathered at Cutright Porsche-Aud~ on June 23rd to begin their journey, and they all finished except one. By the way, has anyone seen or heard from Bill Stumpf?! The weather was made to order and everyone had great time, despite a few wrong turns and a little car si~ckness. I wou]~d especially like to thank all those who helped make the rallye a success: Bill and John LeFlang and Don and Teri Colwell, who checked the rallye route and wor~ed the start and finish, and, of course, those of you who came out and ran the course. Dear Editor, Why are two agencies of our state government hurrying to cover up an obvious error which is costing California consumers up to $15 million annually? The agencies involved are the Air Resources Board (ARB) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (E~MV), both of which have been caught with their pants down over the mis-registration Qf a Volkswagen roadster as a classy Porsche. Instead of correcting the error for the benefit of the consumer, ARB and IIMV have opted to support the marketing of the vehicle which is called a Porsche 914-4 roadster. VW and Porsche are both distributed in the U.S. by Volkswagen of America, but each is manufactured in its own factory in Germany - VW in W~rzburg and Porsche in Stuttgart. The only commonality between the two companies is the investment in each by the German government and the marketing agreement with VW of America. Wherein lies the scam that is costing the consumer $3,000 per vehicle for 5,000 Porsche 914-4’s sold in California each year? According to Manning Post, a VW dealer in North Hollywood, VW planned to add a roadster to its line of cars back in 1966. It took four years to go from drawing board to the assembly line. VW manufactured the 914-4, not Porsche, and brought it to the market in 1970. Since then, 60,000 of the vehicles have been sold in the U.S., an estimated 15,000 of which were peddled in California. Except for the body design which was planned and built by Karmann (who originally built the Karmann Ghia for VW), the vehicle is all VW, and the engine is the same as that found in the VW 412, Post said. Before an automobile can be marketed in the U.S. or California~ it must clear the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Washington and the ARB here to make certain the anti-pollution devices meet federal and state standards. According to Post, only the manufacturer can bring the vehicles to federal and state authorities for clearance, therefore the EPA and ARB executive orders correctly and clearly identify the 914-4 as a Volkswagen, not a Porsche. But, when VW of America distributes the machines to Porsche agencies for sale, they carry the Porsche label, not

marketing. Each maehine sold was

Only when the story became known recently did the ARB try to cover their error - first by admitting still that the vehicle was manufactured by VW but adding a line that the roadster was "marketed by VW of America, a division of Porsche-Audi." Suggested prices for VW’s range from about $2500-$3200 while Porsche 911’s start at $10,050-$14,775, and that’s without tape decks, mags and other fancy extras. Right now the price on the so-called Porsche 914-4 runs from $5500 to $6450, but the average car delivered in California with extras costs about $7000. According to Post, had VW sold the. 914-4 in its own showrooms through its own dealer network, the most they could get for the car would be $4000 loaded. Back in my school days, you could subtract $4000 from $7000 and get $3000, in this case the over-price being charged for the VW masquerading as a Porsche. Multiply that, then, by the 5000 cars sold in California and you get an overcharge of $15 million. For those die-hard critics who say, "Well,Porsche did the engineering. All VW did was manufacture the machines," there is a simple answer. "Porsche did the engineering on the VW ’bug’ but that doesn’t make it a Porsche," Post said. For example, when you go to the store to buy steak, you don’t expect to unwrap the package when you get home and find horsemeat? Not that there is anything wrong with horsemeat, but you want to find what you pay for. Or, if you spend $300 on a Hickey-Freeman suit, you don’t want to unwrap the garment and find a Sears label. Why didn’t the ARB and [~4V tell VW of America that the vehicle must be marketed as a VW 914-4 since that is exactly what the roadster is? Doesn’t t~is leave the dealer, the distributor and the state in line for a series of lawsuits because the consumer finds he has a mis-labeled product, the value of which is $3000 less than what he paid for it? Why the attempted cover up in the state agencies? Can’t the ARB and ~V and the other alphabetized agencies get together so the left hand knows what the right hand is doing? (Continued on Page ii)

It appears that only the Willow Springs event has made money for the club so far. An effort is still being made to collect the deposit we made to Southland Cruises last October. The deadline for the newsletter is July 24th. An advertising rate increase was discussed, since the newsletter is $800 in the red.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP’MEETING -’July Ii, 1974 The president, Tore Johnson, ca!led the , ~meeting to order and informed the membership that a petition i.s being circulated which is attemptlng to place more names on the ballot for the national election, This petition should be reviewed by the members and signed by those who are in agreement with it. He also told us about Orange Coast Region’s super event in September, the West Coast Week-ender. It will feature a concours, rallye, slalom and other goodies. Look in the July Porscherama for more info.

Don colwell discussed the Big Sur tour and other upcoming events. It was suggested that we should have an event or activity for charity. The physical involvement of such a charity group should be a main point. Carol Edwards reported on the Christmas Party; the Princess Louise Restaurant is being considered. The projected cost would be approximately $25 per couple.

Doug 8rownlee announced the results from the Mountain Goat Rallye. Trophies will be awarded at the next meeting. Activities Chairman Don colwell reminded everyone to mark upcoming events: wine tasting, tech meeting, Big Sur tour, Challenge Cup Slalom, cook-out breakfast, and W~llow Springs.

The next board meeting will be at Tore Johnson’s home on Sunday, August 18th at ll:00 a.m. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Ken Grace pointed out an upsurge in new members and introduced guests for the evening. Kurt Schweickhard encouraged the membern to participate more in club events, since board members are leading in competition points. After Tore conducted a short "for sale" session, a 20 minute break was in order. After the break, great slides of club cars in action and a short series of slides about the late Peter Revson were shown by Ron Brown. The meeting was adjourned at 10:45.

BOARD MEETING - July 17, 1974 The monthly board meeting of PCA-LA was held at the home of Paul and Carol Edwards. Thirteen members were in attendance. Tore called the meeting to order and informed the Board that no signatures came forth from the membership regarding the petition for the national election. He also authorized Corky Kirk to follow through on the new club shirts and patches.

"Almost" is the same as "not even close" if the officer did in fact m~ss all ten cars during his hurried turn. Ten cars Jn the immediate area, huh? Being familiar with the type of lights on the car in question, that can only mean one thing. At least eight of those ten drivers* were partially blinded by the high beams that were carelessly left on. And that is a potentially dangerous situation, my friends. One final note: Maybe Californians are not allowed the luxury of good lights because people don’t know what the hell to do once they have purchased a set
