PCA’LA AT A GLAHC[ PCA-LA is 350 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is also a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine ("Porsche Panor~una") and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. presidential rhetoric If you h~ven’t noticed ~ire~dy by the inside cover of this month’s newsletter, there ~re two changes under the Board of Directors. Marc Rothman~ as most of you know, moved to San Diego last December. Marc had planned to fly up for the meetings and had also scheduled tech meetings in advance. However, with the energy crisis, many flights have been cancelled, making it impossible to attend. Knowing Marc as I do, I’m sure it was very disappointing to him that he had to resign. He plans to remain very active with the LA region, though, by working and participating in our events. Replacing.Marc as Tech Chairman is none other than John Williamson. Most everyone knows John, either as the Porsche mechanic or in SCCA racing. John is very knowledgable on all model Porsches from 356’s up to the latest tricks from the factory. You know the old saying~ "when it rains~ it pours"? Well, Bob Van Cleave surprised (continued on page II) COVER
The cover this month is courtesy of Porsche-Audl Public Relations, and shows the "limited ed~tlon" 914 available since April at your Porsche-A~udl dealer.

Class RESULTS Is it possible that seventy cars would drive to a 2½ mile asphalt road that leads nowhere for one day of "sticking your foot in it"? Well, that’s what happened on March 16th as we had our "Won Day Willow". For those of you who weren’t there, you missed seeing some interesting things: one of the most beautiful days (weatherwise) you’ll ever see at Willow Springs; our driving instructor, Scooter Patrick, landing his twin engine plane on the front straightaway (beats getting up at 5:00 in the morning to drive up); and, in addition, our beloved president cleaning up the track (aren’t you supposed to pick up the pylons after the event?!).

Our many thanks to Scooter for his patience and superb driving instruction (especially from me, who went 12 seconds faster!), and to Beverly Porsche-Audi for their sponsorship. Congratulations to all the winners, especially Chuck Lea for Top Time of Day (men) and Carola Anderson for Top Time of Day (women). For all of you who didn’t win, talk to our new tech chairman, John Williamson, and maybe he can get you around a little bit quicker!

Want a chance to put all that great information that you gleaned from the Membership Meeting into practice? Well, here it is, the "By The Numbers" Rallye/Picnic~ Pack up that old picnic basket and meet at Downtown Porsche-Audi, at 9:OO a.m. 631 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, to depart and wend your way over hill and dale for approximately three hours to Vasquez Rocks County Park. There will be two check-points en route, which you can reach by solving a practice problem, such as this: An imaginary car 20 miles ahead of you travels at 60 mph. When you overtake this imaginary car, you change your speed to 20 mph. Your present speed is 120 mph. The formulae to solve such problems are: Distance = Speed times Time Time = Distance divided by Speed Speed = Distance divided by Time Horace Searcie, the rallyemaster, will give more info and practice problems, as well as answer all your questions, at the Membership Meeting, May 9th. Due to the generosity of Downtown Porsche-Audi (they are supplying trophies and coffee and donuts at the start), the price of this event has been reduced to a mere $3.00 for PCA members ($4.00 for non-members). Since Horace would like to present the trophies at the park after the rallye, he needs to know how many participants we will have, so drop him a postcard by May llth to let him know if you plan to come. His address is: P.O. Box 3324, Terminal Annex, Los Angeles, CA 90051. y, all come, ya hear~

9th MEMBERSHIP MEETING Thursday/8:00 p.m. The Membership Meeting for the month of May will be held, as usual, at our favorite h~unt, the Blarney Castle, 623 S. Western, Los Angeles. No dinner this month, so the business will get under way at 8:00 p.m. If you’d like to raise a glass or two with your fellow Porsche buffs, get there some time before that. The entertainment for the evening will be a panel of PCA expert rallyists, speaking on none other than . . . yup, you guessed it, rallying: This will be a great opportunity to prepare for the "By The Numbers" R~llye to be held at the end of this month, so get those questions ready! Both experienced rallyists, who can contribute additional helpful information, and novices, who can take lots of notes, should benefit greatly from this meeting. We will also have as our guest Don Kravig, our Zone 8 Rep, who can answer any of your questions regarding the national organization. See you Thursday~
15th
Wednesday/8:00 p.m.

SO, YOU
DON’T WANT
TO BUY A NEW ONE? Due to the extensive use of plsstics in new cars, not to mention emission controls, interlock safety belts, buzzers and prices, quite a number of people have asked me about the practicality of buying a used Porsche. The word "practical" im~nediately eliminates my all-time favorite; you guessed it, the Speedster. In the following paragraphs I have given my opinions on whst a person should consider before making a purchase,
gest a better car than the 356C to s potential buyer. Snappy acceleration, good brakes, excellent mileage and a body so well assembled it can put to shame most 1974 models, make it a car that possibly will never again be available to the public. As a finsl reminder, always when buying a used car, be sure to have it thoroughly checked by a reputable place of business. Even the best of the breed sre sometimes mistreated. Although this article is only one person’s opinion, hopefully it will provide some insight, at least a place to begin, for any interested parties.
The 356C wss the first non-specialty Porsche to be manufactured with disc brakes, ~nd the 1967 900 series cars were the last of their kind. No plastic, no smog controls, no buzzers. I feel that most of the superior quality production Porsehes are found in this time period,

The fastest of the lot is the 67 911S, followed closely by the 65 thru 67 911’s. These are excellent automobiles and all are available today. Unfortunately, they are not suited for city driving or 55 miles° per hour. Also, they are horribly expensive to repair. Oh, well~
name of the game Hopefully this letter will not give the impression of "sour grapes" due to my own very poor performance at our recent Willow Springs event. I decided to write on the assumption that other people feel the same as I do. The subject is car classification. The event started out very well for me when I was placed in "Improved Touring U". The next thing I knew I was in class "V", also Improved Touring, as a result of being bumped because there were no other entries in "U". Everything was still cool, I thought, as I walked over to registration to find out who my new competition was: one 1973 2.4 911T, three newer model 911’s and two 914-6’s. Yes, indeed, 914-6; you know, that lightweight, extremely agile, mid-engine machine that used to have to race against others like it. My very next thought was why the hell did I drive 125 miles and pay $15 to enter an event I did not have a chance to win? Premature thinking? I really didn’t., think so.
The early 912’s are the easiest of the group to maintain; hence, lowest cost per mile to operate. Also, luggage space, as in the 911’s is adequate. These cars are a pleasure to drive in city and suburban traffic, but after driving various 911’s on the open road, I’ve always felt the 912 engine never matched the capabilities of the car. The 1964-65C and SC models have always had a magic all their own. They not only have the unmistakable look of quality, but are one of the very few automobiles that I have driven where that quality instills a complete feeling of confidence during any traffic situation. Driving at any speed or just sitting still, I am aware of the fantastic attention to detail throughout this automobile. Possibly the lack of luggage space is the only drawback of the 356C. I’ve never found anything else about the car that could be regarded as a minus.
After the whole thing was over, including my little journey across the desert at turn eight, I took a close look at the times turned, not only in class "V", but also in class "E". Those results made it "quite clear that 914-6’s should be separated from the 911 models.
I’ve been closely associated with the Porsche automobile for approximately eight years and have driven them well over 125,000 miles, and I could not sug-

WOMP:
WOMP!
Bet you never thought you’d see the results of the Third Annual POC/PCA Challenge Cup Rallye, did you, folks? Surprise, surprise! Actually, it was the extreme modesty of your editor and his outstanding navigator (guess who’s typing this?!) that prevented their publication at an earlier date. After all, it’s not too polite to flaunt a fourth place in SOP class, especially when you beat your president by about ]8 minutes, when he was running NAV. In all serioushess, however, "Destination Solvang" was a terrific rallye and we sincerely appreciate POC’s efforts in setting it up. Particular thanks to Ed Mohr, rallyemaster, and his assistant, Tom Wellbaum, for ~ job well done. Also, our sincere sympathy to POC, who has yet to win this Challenge Cup. Better luck next year (when we hope to trounce you ageing).

The only problem with it is that I have to get tower clearance each run.
OR "OUCH[
I BROKE MY ARM PATTING MYSELF ON THE BACK"
Recently I was told by a friend that her pride and joy (911T) had an attempt made on its peaceful existence in one place and in one piece by a would-be thief. The only thin~ that "saved" it from foul play was a neatly and carefully hidden "cutoff" switch that the thief could not find. Her door was apparently opened with a key since there were no marks on the panel; the i~nition showed tell-tale marks of tamperin~ and the under side of the instrument panel had wires pulled, crossed, disconnected~ and I don’t know what-all. But no startee the Porschee~ Since then I have installed another antitheft device on her car which adds three more dimensions to its safety (these same measures are also on my car - you’d better believe it~). Moral of the story: If you’re going to use an anti-theft device, don’t make it so damned obvious~ The more time a thief has to use, the more liable he is to discovery and the more likely he will become apprehensive, discouraged, anddecide to forget the whole idea. Of course, the "tow truck" is another thing; but they, too, can be out-foxed. Just use your imagination. My ideas available to bonafied Porsche owners upon request (as I believe thieves also read our publications in search of victims, ideas, et cetera). Horace L. Searcie (continued from page i) everyone, including himself, with his resignation. Bob signed up for a couple of night classes, and it turned out that they can only be held on Thursday nights, making it impossible {or him to attend the meetings and record the minutes. Bob and his wife, Patty, are so helpful a~ all the meetings and events, that it’s nice just to have them in the club. Bob will remain on the Competition Committee. Replacing Bob as secretary will be Kurt Schweickhard. Kurt is a fairly new member (one year), but he is one of the most active, and is already doing a good job. If you don’t know John or Kurt, just attend the next membership meeting and see them in action. Tore
Well folks, get out your monocles; those minutes that have been missing from the earlier issues of "Porscherama" are about to unfold on these very pages. Read on! FEBRUARy GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING The February "valentine" membership meeting was held February 14th at the Blarney Castle. PCA-LA President, Tore Johnson, began the meeting by welcoming all members and their guests. He then turned the meeting over to John Kepler who informed us that a plaque had been presented to Vasek Polak for his outstanding participation and support of YCA-LA activities. Vasek, in turn, presented the club with a photograph of the latest RSR 3.0 liter Carrera. The officer’s reports for the evening begain with Tech Chairman, Marc Rothman, who told of the upcoming tech session at Jerr~ Fairchild Industries. Marc’s report was followed by a report on club activities (handled by Tore Johnson in the absence of our Activities chairman). After highlighting the Palm Springs Tour, he called on John williamson and Don Colwell to present trophies to the winners of the TRW Slalom. After the trophy presentation, Ed Mohr (our guest from POC) spoke briefly about the upcoming PCA-POC Challenge Cup Rally, and Ron Ramage gave us some details on the Santa Anita Concours d’Elegance coming up on March 2nd. At the end of reports, Tore announced that the club will have a one-day time trial event in March at Willow Springs. Our special guest speaker for the evening was Scooter Patrick, who not only related some very interesting experiences from his racing career, but also gave us the highlights of last year’s Can-Am. After Scooter’s talk, there was a brief slide presentation by Kurt Schweickhard showing the agony, ecstacy and "fun and games" of last year’s Willow Springs’ event, and then the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Bob Van Cleave
The February Board meeting was held on the 20th at Don and Teri Colwell’s home. The meeting begain with a general discussion of the February membership meeting and how we might improve future meetings. It was decided that we should choose a different entree for our next dinner meeting. Don Colwell announced that, at the March membership meeting, Scooter Patrick would return and present a chalk-talk on how to drive the Willow Springs’ track. Del Jackson reviewed the events coming up in March, and Ron Ramage (our guest for the evening) gave a report on the Santa Anita Concours he is chairing. ’file itme of club jackets was brought up and Teri Colwell related some of her efforts to obtain prices and samples of a suitable club jacket. It was agreed that we should pursue this goal and obtain jackets as soon as possible. The meeting ended at Ii:00 p.m. after a lengthy discussion of Willow Springs and how the time trials would be coordinated. Respectfully submitted, Bob Van Cleave

MORE MINUTES MARCH GENERAL MEMBERSHIP ~,~ETING The PCA-LA membership meeting for March was held on the 14th at the Blarney Castle Restaurant. The meeting began with offier’s reports. Corky Kirk, Treasurer, reported that the club bank balance was approximately $1,500. Activities chairman, Del Jackson, outlined the upcoming events in March and April, and then Don Colwell, Vice President, reminded everyone that the April meeting would be a dinner meeting. He also noted that a buffet dinner arrangement had been made with the restaurant so that everyone could choose their own food. Ken Grace, Membership Chairman, concluded reports by welcoming new members and guests, After the business portion of the meeting, Ed Mohr (’74 Event-master for the Challenge Cup Rally) and Marty Schulman (POC President) presented PCA with the winning trophy for the annual PCA-POC event. Tore Johnson then conducted a lively "For Sale" session and, just before the intermission, Teri Colwell spoke briefly about what the women in the club were doing and thanked all who donated food for the TRW Slalom. After intermission, we were entertained by Jim Ewing’s clever satirical production entitled "24 Minutes of Lemons". The second part of the evening’s entertainment was given by Scooter Patrick who conducted an informative blackboard discussion on how to drive Willow Springs. Scooter ended his talk with a brief question and anwer period and then the meeting was adjourned, Respectfully submitted, Bob Van Cleave
The monthly meeting of the PCA-LA Board of Directors was held at The Egg and The Eye Restaurant on Tuesday, March 19th. The following people attended: Tore Johnson, Corky Kirk, Paul Edwards, Kurt Schweickhard, John Williamson, Ken Grace, John Kepler, Don Colwell, Jose Ochoa, Lark Nakazaki, Tim Hunter, Doug Brownlee and W.W. Schweickhard. (Many people, kemosabee, show good food - not like some places bring Silver inside, this place heap good wigwam and run by Kurt Schweickhard . . . only problem, Schweickhard not sound like Indian name . . . Editor go mad typing all these minutes - Ed.) Membership: Ken Grace reported 330 members but indicated that that number may be reduced to approximately 80 due to change in the National Offices system of collecting dues. A letter was submitted which in the future will be sent with each membership application. Publicity: Paul Edwards reported that he intends to enter 5 copies of the November and December "Porscherama" in the national PCA competition. Paul asked that the Board consider purchasing or leasing a typewriter. Treasurer: Corky Kirk submitted the 1973 financial statement which will be printed in the next newsletter. Corky presented a form of petty cash slip which he asked everyone requesting reimbursement to use. This form should be signed and approved by two board members, preferably including the President. Secretary: Kurt Schweichhard was appointed PCA-LA Secretary since Tore Johnson had accepted Bob Van C]eave’s resignation prior to the meeting. Tech: John williamson w~s appointed Tech Chairman since Tore Johnson had accepted Marc Rothman’s resignation prior to the meeting (Marc is now living in San Diego but still intends to participate in LA’s activities as much as possible - Ed.) General Meeting: The April meeting will be held at the Blarney Castle and a buffet dinner will be served.
(The Drifter)
Board Meeting: The next board meeting will be held at Chez Schweickhard (continued next page)
(continued from page 13) Discussion: After the formalities of the meeting, a long discussion of the new Zone 8 compeition rules took place. Since there have been many complaints about these rules, especially the classification changes, a motion was made and seconded that any member’s complaints should be referred to the Competition Committee (made up of Bob Van Cleave, Nick Friesen, Tore Johnson and John Williamson). The complaints should be specific, in writing, and should be considered by the Committee prior to making a formal protest. It was agreed that the Competition Committee should meet with our Zone 8 representative as soon as all comments had been reviewed. Discussion: The subject of trophies was discussed at length. It was concluded that we need a more appropriate (i.e., less "gaudy") type of award than we have used in the past; one that reflects the prestige of the Porsche and our pride in participating and doing well in a club event. Doug Brownlee and Jose Ochoa agreed that they would investigate different types of awards and report back at the next meeting. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned. ~ Kurt Schweickhard~ PCA-LA Secretary
Oh my gawd, this is it, you little corn fritters. Last year at this time I got run outa town, and had to have all my Santa Fe and prunes sent to Lower Siberia Did ya ever feel like the social director on the Titanic? Anyway, here it is again the one that ya have been waitin for. Yep, that’s right - "Fraudi Looks at the Board." Tore Johnson, President: Tore is so confused that he walks around Lancaster in his shorts saying, "Hi, I pres of PCA-LAI Wanna dance?" Don Colwell, Vice-President: "Did we guarantee that many for dinner?:" Kurt Schweickhard, Secretary: on, guys, don’t talk so fast. have my crayon sharpened:~"

Corky Kirk, Treasurer: "One, two, buckle my shoe, three, four, close the door, five, six, pick up sticks - oh hell, we only have six dollars~" Del Jackson, Activities: "Our next event will be a bake-off, swimming lessons and a beach party at Palm Springs." John Williamson, Tech: "Yes, I’ve owned many Porsches. Let’s see - first there was a 355, then a Speedstar, a 191T, a 9-20-14, and then my favorite, the 609. Yep, that’s theml"

Winnin~ Time My Time 2:06 (1967 2:16 (1965 2.0 911) 2.0 911) Willow 1974 2:00 (1970 2:09 (Same) 914-6) (2nd 2:05 - 1973 2.4 911T) In just two events at Willow I reduced my time by seven seconds, which should have placed me only four seconds away from a win, but instead I find myself a full nine seconds off the pace set by a 914-6. The closest a 911 could come to this was approximately 2:05, a time that was recorded by a relatively experienced driver. This fall I will probably go fast enough to put pressure on that 2:05 time, but there is no way I can run two minutes flato (continued on page 15)
Paul Edwards, Publicity: "This paper is my second favorite thing. My first favorite thing is getting ripped off in church~l" Ken Grace, Membership: "Let’s see, think my best friends in the club are numbers 134, 219, 2~5, 351, and Roy Roger and Bullet~" John Kepler, Board Chairman: "If I had a chance to be president again, I think I’d buy a Datsun~" That’s it kiddies, your board. I personally think you were all stoned when you elected them. I was just constipated. Love and Kisses, Fraudi
membership The recent mailing from PCA National indicates that many of our members have not sent in their renewals. It would be greatly appreciated (by me) if you would do so at your earliest convenience, so that I can keep the records up to date. At the next meeting or club function, how about showing me your 1974 membership card so that I can help our secretary prepare competition and participation point leaders. There is a good possibility that points earned so far may not count unless you are renewed. Thanks. By the way, our membership is streaking forward to 343 members! Ken Grace P.S. Here’s a little ditty from our club poet laureate, Carola Anderson. Congrats to William LeFlang And the entire PCA gang, For it was on the challenge rallye Where Ken had the better tally Than Tore from old Solvang.
