PCA’LA AT A GLANCE PCA-LA is 350 diverse Porsche owners. We are young and old, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is also a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world. On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine ("Porsche Panorama") and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. And what PCA-LA Offers is an opportunity to share the exhilirating (and sometimes frustrating) experience of understanding, maintaining and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. MINUTES The monthly board meeting was held at the home of Tore Johnson in Lancaster on Sunday, August 18th. A very important guest made this meeting somewhat specia!, as the board had the opportunity to meet and welcome the president of National PCA, Louis Marable.

~EMBERSHIP MEETING - August 8, 1974 The monthly general membership meeting was held once again at the Blarney Castle on Thursday, August 8th. This was a dinner meeting and after some long lines at the buffet table, Tore Johnson called the meeting to order. He reminded everybody about the upcoming Orange Coast Region Weekender and commented on the results of the PCA-POC Challenge Cup Slalom. Results showed that POC won ii classes and PCA won 9. Nevertheless, PCA made an excellent showing, which was not expected by POC. Tore also introduced the evening’s guests, Kurt Schweickhard gave a basic explanation about the club’s point system, especially the participation points, as most members seem not to be too familiar with it. He also pointed out that anybody having questions should contact him. Corky Kirk assured us that we have a healthy financial situation and he also presented the new woven PCA patch which will be on sale at the next meeting. Another appeal was made by Paul Edwards for help with locating a typewriter for the club for a reasonable price. Also, the deadline for submitting materia! for the next newsletter is August 20, 1974. John Williamson, the tech chairman, indicated that we might have a tech meeting at Autoscan on September 19th. No tech meeting is scheduled for this month, Don Colwell urged everybody to come to the Cook-out Breakfast on Sunday. He also stated that our Christmas Party will be held at the Princess Louise Restaurant. Doug Brownlee handed out trophies for the Mountain Goat Rallye. It was noted that he himself designed and made them and everybody thought that they looked great,

Tore called the meeting to order at 2:20 p.m. The agenda was to get club business taken care of first and then have a round table discussion with Mro Marable. Del Jackson announced that the next general meeting’s entertainment will be a film about Willow Springs and Charlie Akly wil! give a talk about how to get best around the track. Del was concerned about the dinner meetings, as we lost about $80 on the last one, since we didn’t reach the minimum. The general consensus was that this particular night was bad because of Nixon’s resignation. Kurt Schweickhard requested information on missing club records from 1962, 1968 and 1973. Copies will be made of minutes from past newsletters so as to make records complete. Kurt also suggested that an inventory of club equipment should be updated. Rick Potts offered to help organize all equipment° Vern Covert might be able to assist by fixing up a trailer for storage. It was pointed out by Kurt that a readily available file system with membership information and a points record would be a helpful tool for the proper running of the club. It came to light that a file is supposed to be kept by the Membership Chairman. A motion was approved by the Board to include National and Zone 8 events in our point system. Corky Kirk announced $1914.73 in the bank. Most advertizers have paid their bills, and two invoices from the Big Sur Tour and the Santa Anita Concours are outstanding. Corky paid $189 for 220 new PCA-LA patches. Don Colwell said that the Willow Springs event is coming along fine, however, we do need someone to operate the Hungry Dog. Tore has planned a prep meeting for Willow on August 21st. An event for charity was again discussed° A deposit has been paid to assure the Princess Louise for our Christmas Party.

Tore Johnson devoted a short time to a "For Sale" session° After a break, John Williamson told us about the Porsche Parade in Pocono (in which he place third overall and Lynne Smith place second in women over-all), and he presented a third place award to Paul Edwards, our editor, for the National Newsletter Competition. Ron Ramage then showed a movie he made during the Big Sur Tour and another earlier event. Everyone had a big laugh and the meeting was adjourned at about 11:15 p.m~

Paul Edwards has a lead on a good typewriter for the club. Last chance to turn (Continued on Page 9)

DAS

Last month I had the misfortune ot reading an article in our paper entitled, "Was Ist Das?". In this article, the author tries to point out’that a 914 is a VW and not a Porsche. He also tries-to point out that the Air Resources Board (ARB) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) got caught with their pants down in mis-registering the car as a Porsche instead of a VW. In my opinion, the only thing the author points out is his own lack of knowledge pertaining to automobiles, especially Porsche!

There being no further business, Tore opened the discussion with Lou Marable. The main topics turned out to be financial responsibilities of National and the content and layout of Panorama. Marable explained the many costs involved of which the membership is not always aware (rent, equipment, travel expenses, postage, salaries and more). The problem of running such a large club without a central headquarters was discussed at length. There are approximately i0,000 active members in ten zones. The lack of material for Pano from general membership is one reason why the content is sometimes criticized° However, Mr. Marable assured us that great efforts are being made to improve the publication, especially in getting a better communication line established with the factory in Stuttgart° During discussion about the insurance, we were advised that waivers should be signed for ALL events, The meeting was adjourned at about 5:30 p.mo Respectfully submitted, Kurt Schweickhard Secretary, PCA-LA

IST

Porsche needed a replacement for the 912,, 912’s were beginning to cost nearly as much as a basic 911o So, if VW could produce the basic car and Porsche could modify it, and at the same time cut the cost by almost half for us, the consumers, why not?! Back in late 1964 or early 1965 a gentleman by the name of Carroll Shelby took a Ford Mustang 2+2 fastback and transformed it into one hell of a road machine. I certainly never heard anyone refer to those cars as Fords - they were always called Shelbys. The same applies to the 914. VWmay have the pieces, but Porsche get~ it together! Tore Johnson
