PCA ..AT A GLANCE PCA-LA is a group of 400 Porsche enthusiasts. We are young and old, male and female, novice and expert, slow and fast. PCA-LA is also a "Region" of the Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque club in the world. On the national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine -- Porsche Panorama holds an annual week-long "Parade", and provides a nationwide forum for communication. The "club" part is mostly local. And what PCA-LA offers the Porsche owner is an opportunity to share the exhilirating, and sometimes frustrating, experience of understanding, maintaining, and driving one of the most unique automobiles of all time. Enjoy it with us. Membership in the Porsche Club of America costs $25.00 annually. This includes regional dues, discounts at club events, subscriptions to Porscherama and Panorama, and.more. For further information, contact Bob Wood, Membership Chairman.

upcoming events from other regions. New Business Judd announced resignations of Zone 8 reps, Bob Upton and Lee Hurty, at Holtville. Board appointed John Williamson PCA-LA’s Competitio.n Chairman to represent LA in all Zone 8 competitive events and any~protests. Meeting adjourned at 11:50.

December 25, 1976: For immediate release -- Zone 8 representatives meeting in closed session at the Balboa Park Zoo announced the selection of an undisclosed region as presiding superregion of Zone 8. April l, 1977: FLASH!! In a surprise move, PCA-SD announced the secession of Zone 8 from PCA National. Four of its members now occupy the gilded Rockaroos of the New Hierarchy. October 31, 1978: Porschevaroomagliderspiel, the Zone 8 newspaper, announced on page 74 that PCA-LA has suspended its bylaws and entered into an agreement with POC to create a new organization -- Porsche Understands Tautly Tailed Carreras Are Racy (PUTT-CAR). February 14, 1982: The Los Anqeles Thymes reported a major Porsche-related skirmish yesterday at Riverslide Racerway -"Tempers flew as 50 cars were protested by 200 members who had pooled their membership dues and demanded complete engine teardowns. A PUTT-CAR spokesman responded, ’We just said no! This is no place for arguments, novices, women drivers, or club-think. We aren’t racers - we’re week-end warriors - and a warrior don’t have to show his weapon.’ That afternoon rumors flew as 12 off-shoot clubs were carved out of PUTT-CAR: the Porscheralliers, the Porscheconcouriers, the ’58 Speedsterers, the . " (copy illegible). March 17, 1983: Following announcement of their incorporation into SCCATT, PUTT-CAR officials stated that only fully competitively prepared cars will be permitted in street classes from now on.

June 14, 1983: In a joint flyer to their friends, die-hard enthusiasts Ron Ramage, John Williamson and Vern Covert announced they had sold their Porsches and opened a BMW agency in Carmel. Despite a heavy fog last night in Santa Monica, a group of about 20 Porsches could be seen leaving Shakey’s. When asked who they were, a soft spoken guy with a crested straw hat responded, "Funny, I used to own a Porsche down south -- but I can’t remember seein’ those people before. They just had beer and pizza, and then decided to drive up the Coast seemed to have known one another back around the Bicentennial. Whatever it was, they didn’t talk much about today’s celebration. Funny, too, it bein’ July 4, 1984, and all. Why ya askin’, anyway -- you know one of ’em?"

zone 8 rally notes

For the first Zone 8 rally of the season, PCA-LA mustered five cars, and came away with two trophies -- not bad for a hard day’s work. The rally was put on by Santa Barbara Region, and Joe Boucher and Roger Kerner did their usual fine job of producing a challenging and fun event. The 9-1eg course was just over i00 miles (if you didn’t get lost) and covered the mountains of Simi and Ojai and the orange groves of Fillmore (I never want to see another Sunkist orange). At the lunch break we were given the bad news about the true times for the three legs we had just completed. If that wasn’t enough to produce indigestion, the next six legs definitely were. Just how many NOT A THROUGH STREET signs can one neighborhood have? And who ever expected to find a street named AVACODO (we never did)?? We straggled into HoJo’s about 3:30, certain that all was lost. But hope springs eternal, and PCA-LA came through with flying colors. Nick and Cece Friesen took a first-place in NAY class, and the Wangs took second in SOP, losing by only 2 hundredths of a second (rats[). Other LA participants were Dean Goings and Phil Padget, who had some terrific times; John LeFlang and navigator John Williamson, b6th of whom suffered from an attack of brain fade; and Howard Silverstein and Rhonda Running, who are going to make a great rally team just because they were still speaking to each other when it was all over. It was a beautiful day for driving and the rally lived up to all our expectations. Hope to see you at the next one! Sam ’n Ann Wang

SAFARI SLALOM What do you get when an eventmaster gets up at 4:00 a.m., drives for over an hour, and sets up several hundred pylons??? You got it~ SAFARI SLALOM I (Bang Yer Box III). Certain sections of the course proved to require more skill than certain drivers could muster. This was evidenced by the aglomeration of skid, slide and squiggle tire marks at several locations around the course. It was initially reported that Goodyear was applying to Lion Country Safari for reclamation rights to all the tire rubber left behind by PCA-LA and friends (still pending). There were all kinds of Porsches: 356’s, 912’s, 911’s, 914’s, a 904, and even a custom four-door 911S. The sight of the day was a giraffe and an ostrich pee~ring over an embankment at the crazy little cars going round and round and sideways. Thank-yous to John Williamson, Cheryl Cooper, Lynne Smith, Judd and Ginger Boykin, Jose’ Ochoa, Tore Johnson, Lark Nagasaki, Curt Kuebler, Ada Covert, Mark Rothman, and everyone else who helped. A special thank you to Jerry Korbin and Lion Country Safari for the huge parking lot. Finally, for the 30 drivers who challenged the course, CONGRATULATIONS -- no broken cars~ A turn-out of sixty cars, rolling countryside green from longoverdue rains, and spectacular (if, at times, unbelievably twisting and narrow) roads made the fifth annual PCA-POC Challenge Cup Rally another memorable event. POC mounted a large contingent, but PCA was again victorious, as John Williamson and John LeFlang took top honors in the Equipped Class with ~ly .06° total..error.~ (And.would y~ou believe they were even beaten by Roger Kerner and Joe Boucher of PCA-SB who had a .04 error in Nav Class?~) Nine out of thirteen trophies presented went to PCA members - an overwhelming triumph~ We list here only PCA members who ran "PCA" (these big events also eat up big space - ed.). After countless packages of steel wool, bottles of Armor-All, cans of polishing and rubbing compound, and many assorted brushes, Q-Tips and rags, I’ve become a member of the "Oh, why don’t you concours your car" group. My tired body, calloused hands and clean car finally, after a lot of help from my friends, made it to Santa Anita, and it was worth every minute of work. What a beautiful event; you can find almost any kind of Porsche from a ’53 coupe to a ’75 Carrera. For those of you who have never taken the time to spend a day at the concours d’elegance, you have missed something. It is one thing to see the fourlegged thoroughbreds race around the track and quite another to see the four-wheeled thoroughbreds parked on the lawn. It all comes together for me, this thing called Porsche, When I look at the awards table and see sterling silver cups, ribbons and bottles of wine for the winners and participants, and I look around and see 55 beautiful Porsches.

was equal to, if not finer than, any national Para<e concours he has ever attended. A special thanks to John Cesareo and Ron Ramage for their technical assistance. Also to Dean Goings and Stana for their brains and !ogic in computing rapidly and accurately for fast score results. As usual, Jose was around to help me with whatever came up.

March 14th was typical Southern California -- the kind you read about in travel brochures while pondering your frozen Porsche in the East and Midwest -- a sultry 75 degrees. Even the horses running the track had grins on their faces.

The crew at Santa Anita racetrack was really cooperative and kept the crowds in good order. Also a big thanks to John Thomas at Bozzani Porsche-Audi for donating the fabulous trophies, and to Alan Balch at Santa Anita, who offered all their help and facilities. Special congratulations to Overall Concours Class winner, Sue Osowski (PCA-OCR), Overal! Street Class winners, Stana and Debbie Cooper (PCA-LA), and the Entrants’ Favorite Award winners, Patty and Rick Peters (PCA-OCR), with their ’53 356 Coupe.

And then came the Porsches -- all 53 of them, much to Stana’s and my surprise, for we had pre-registered only 42 cars. It was a beautiful turnout of exceptionally prepared and diversified models of the Porsche marque. Bob Wood helped me post the concours sign and unload the five cases of wine (a bottle for each entrant), while Ron Ramage prepared the Awards and Trophy Table with the silver goblets, wine, and red, white and blue ribbons. It looked good enough to eat. Cheryl Cooper supervised the layout of the cars amongst the flower beds. Stana, Helen, and Judy started the registration and score computation sheets -and thus began Los Angeles Region’s 5th Annual Concours d’Elegance at Santa Anita. With 46 cars in Street Class and 7 in Concours, the Street Class judges had a grueling day with time for only one 10 minute coke break. I sincerely thank all the judges for their interest and help on this event -- Lou Marable, John Dusckett, Lynne Smith, John Williamson, Peter Luelsdorf, Ron Armor, Ken Malkus (both from Orange Coast), Bob Upton (Riverside), Joe Schneider (Santa Barbara), Nick Friesen, and Bob Wood. A marvelous compliment was paid to us all by Lou Marable, past President of PCA National, stating that this particular concours

Mostly tho’ -- I want to express my excitement for experiencing with you all a truly marvelous day at Santa Anita. Even "The Shoe" thought it was a most memorable day with his 7,000th win.

My Thanks, Chuck Cooper Euentmas~

"~"~ ’" :

Ron has quite a few super activities planned for the~next fe months -- a tour to!: San Simeon and wineries, a Zone 8 rally -you name it~ Judd has a dinner meeting p~&h~ se0n, and Mark ~ has some good tech sessions lined up. There is nothing to match’ owning a Porsche except sharing your Porsche experiences (both the good and the unpleasant) with other Porsche people. Speaking of other Porsche people, it looks like we will soon have a new neighbor in Zone 8. A group of fellow Porsche Pushers have applied to PCA National to form the San Gabriel Valley Region. Good luck to these new PCA’ers[~ Looking forward to seeing you in the months ahead.
