spanky corner Our dinner meeting at Yamato last month brought out a lot of old and new faces. 50 members and guests kicked off their shoes and settled on the floor for a feast of soup, rice, tempura and teriyaki chicken. The warm sake wasn’t bad either. Thanks to Doralyn Harris for arranging the whole thing. President John welcomed ments; visitors and new were introduced; Heinze us about the new Audi’s then we adjourned for a could still walk.
everyone, made a few announcemembers (almost all of them) Mikulka from Beverly P/A told Che’s very impressed), and few minutes to make sure we
A member of the CHP theft patrol made a presentation about auto theft in LA. He explained that he couldn’t bring the neat slides we remembered from two years ago; they’ve been declared confidential because people were using them to learn theft techniques Cnice). Anyway, we learned a lot. March looks like a great month for us. We’ll kick-off wi~h our Zone 8 concours at Santa Anita. Jerry Pennington has organized a great showing of cars; don’t miss it. We’ve got a tech meeting planned, a time trial at Holtville, and we’ll finish up with the Long Beach Grand Prix. Somethin’ for everyone. Ann’s planning session (to work on ideas for some fun events this year) accomplished a lot. We’re gonna have a softball competition between the 4-cylinder and the 6-cylinder owners in May (we want to make this an annual event and try for some intramural games with the other regions like Santa Barbara; so get your mitts on). In the works: a gymkhana,a rally/brunch, a fishing trip, a scavenger hunt, and a possible tour to Harrah’s car collection in Reno. Well al’right~ See you all at Santa Anita on the 9th.
John

NOTES
This month I’m going to talk about something that is bothering me. It’s about the proposed region in Long Beach (Grand Prix West). At our Feb. Board meeting, we heard from Tore Johnson about what they would like to do. He asked for our approval because the city of Long Beach (the bounderies for the proposed region) is part of our region. Although the bounderies will be the city of Long Beach some of the charter members to be live as far north as the San Fernando valley and as far south as Mission Viejo. So much for driving long distances to meetings as as excuse to form this new region. Some of the proposals are to have membership dues that are approx. double that of National and to limit the membership to approx. 100 at a time. Even when National assigns a new member from Long Beach to this region and he or she is willing to pay that much and there is a openning in the membership, they still may not be able to join this "Country Club". The trick that these guys are going to use is that a new member will have to be sponsored by two current members and need the approval of their Board before they will be allowed to join. Gone will be the days when all you needed to be a part of PCA was to have a Porsche. Now it’s who you are and what you do that counts. The LA Board gave it’s approval to this kind of discrimination. I hope that our Zone Rep. and National officers do not. Thanks for last months newsletter go to Ann Wang for her help in setting it up and for the use of her typewriter (eat your heart out Lis Stanton L.V. region, it’s the kind you dream about using), to the Ogdens for their article on the wine tour, to Lark Nakazaki for her artwork on the concours flyer, and to Mac McKee for the use of his company’s mailing machine.

mmq tes... Rallymasters John Williamson and John LeFlang got the 1980 Zone 8 rally season off to a terrific start with their "OJ Special" on Saturday the 23rd. The deceptively simple rally instructions routed the 19 participants through several residential and industrial neighborhoods before ending up in the Simi Valley. The course was well-looped so no one could get lost (at least not for very long) and according to the critique, there were only four traps in 2½ hours (I can think of a few participants who found some other traps of their own). But everyone made it to the final stop and almost everyone was still smiling. More than half the cars came from LA Region, but a lot .of trophies went to visitors. Greg Fullmer and Bonney Adams made their trip down from Bakersfield (the new Golden Empire Region) worthwhile by taking first place in Class B. First and second place in SOP class went to our rivals from Santa Barbara (we’ll get them in July~). Thanks to all the LA people who helped at checkpoints: Jim and Jean Paden, Lynne Smith, Dave Stephens, Ann Wang, Clare, John and Carl Sargeant, and Bob Youngdahl (who got the lonely on-course control duty). And thanks to John & John for setting up a great rally.

NEW CARS WITH NEW PROBLEMS All things considered, the 1978 and later 911SC’s are probably the best 911’s that Porsche has ever offered for sale. As good as these cars are, the have a couple of mechanical flaws that are unique to this model. The first and most common is that the clutch goes out.rather early. The reason for this is because the clutch disc now has a rubber center instead of the coil spring type torque converter. Chunks of rubber come loose and lodge between the housing and the pressure plate making the clutch useless. This failure usually occurs around 40,000 miles but has happened to one car at 7,000 miles (we sent our customer to a dealer as the car was still under warranty). Luckily no pressure plates have had to be replaced along with the clutch discs. The second problem that occured with 3 1978 SC’s was valve spring breakage. We never encountered this in a street engine and had us baffled for some time. The sjnnptoms are a rattle similar to ignition ping combined with loss of power. This takes place at high R.P.M. during hard acceleration. The fix is to replace all of the valve springs. This is very expensive, but is the only sure cure. One of the mechanical highligths is that now the chain tensioners can be called reliable. We’ve only had one failure (at 41,000 miles) and no incidental damage occured. Pete Zimmermann
